(00:06):
How? Many Now the making of a good
compilation tape is a very supple art.
Many do's and don'ts. First of all, you're using
someone else's poetry to expresshow you feel.
This is a delicate thing. You got to kick it off with a
killer grab attention. Then you got to take it up

(00:27):
enough, then you got to cool it off a notch.
And there are a lot of rules. Did we?
Yeah. Hell yeah.
What flavor do you think that is?
It's. Like a brown and white.
Marshmallow maybe chocolate Marshmallow maybe s'mores or

(00:48):
long story. Short.
It's like a s'more. Yeah, also oil.
Teffe is butter. You eat enough pieces and it all
starts to taste like butter. Yeah, it's my third piece.
Yeah, you're in the butter zone for sure.
Saltwater taffy's a slippery slope.
You're in the butter zone. Where are you?
Minnesota Mall of America wacky flavored M&M Today was pumpkin

(01:10):
pie, and then they've also started to roll out the holiday.
So that means toasty peanuts back.
Which is outstanding. If you haven't already dove it
into that one. Sounds outstanding.
I haven't. And then the other flavor is
fine. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great.
My socks were still on. And then the other flavor,

(01:31):
Chocolate mint, toasty peanut. Toasty Peanut's so good.
There's some. There was toasted marshmallow.
Oh, that sounds, that sounds good.
Not bad, that's all they like. But I told you that they we
talked about this before they pumped the smell of chocolate
into the whole place. Yeah.
Yeah, it's really something thatmakes.
It irresistible like you have to.

(01:52):
I didn't have a choice. I might not have even wanted
M&M's, but I didn't have a choice.
They were good. Did we on the last episode cover
Mount Rushmore Halloween candies?
This will come up post Halloween.
No, we did a bit of a round Robin where I believe one of us
mentioned are. You a hand tattoo guy now?
Yeah, I have. I have.
I've had that for a while. Damn, I didn't realize that you

(02:14):
were that that the. Finger one for like 2.
Years. Damn, you're you're an edgy guy
now, man. All sorts of cool scars from
your accident. Wacky colored hairs.
I'm gonna eat this rainbow. And let me see, I'll tell you
what that is. Rainbow butter.
That's butter. Oh gosh, nice.

(02:35):
That's like a sherbet. That's like rainbow sherbet
that's tasty. That's a good one, all right.
No, we didn't do. It what are yours?
We didn't do. It even this is post because if
you don't want to go Halloween candy because this comes out
post Halloween, we'll go Mount Rushmore.
I told you this is my new favorite thing now, right Ever
since that episode of the pod. Yep Yep, I actually think
Halloween candy is perfect for post Halloween because everybody

(02:55):
would have in theory just gottentheir candy.
Yeah, right. So go.
So go for yours. I'll tell you if you're wrong.
Sour Patch. I'll tell you, hold on a second.
I'll tell you when you're wrong.OK, Go ahead.
Good sour patch. That's fine.
How many we get? How many on some Mount Rush 4?
4/4 Goddamn it, there's four in the Mount Rushmore.
Sour Patch Kids. Yeah.
Can I clarify? Skittles When I was a kid before

(03:16):
they changed the lime to green apple.
Sure. So Skittles.
OK, I always love the starburst.Nope, you're wrong.
And remember, I'm allergic to chocolate.
So. What do you mean I can't go to
chocolate? I'm allergic to chocolate.
I can't eat chocolate. Did you not care?
That about me chocolate, salt water, teffy.
Why am I just? That's not real.
Chocolate that's not real chocolate.
I can have like a tiny bit of chocolate, but it's like, but

(03:36):
you know what? I'll pick one chocolate one
'cause I this. Sounds like bullshit, Reese's
bullshit, or. Reese's Pumpkin.
I start sneezing and I get like sores in my throat, like a
canker sore but it's like in my throat.
I don't believe you all. Right.
You don't have to believe me. True for a second.
But I'll say, I'll say Reese's like the Reese's pumpkin.

(03:56):
Where? Are you for the I'm in Myrtle
Beach, Myrtle Beach, SC? Beach this fucking guy beats out
of Minnesota. Shout out to the Shelby Hotel.
Forgive me a bunch of saltwater taffy when I checked in.
Yeah, I. Didn't get anything when I
checked in. I do have a toaster.
OK, So what? Yeah, what's yours?
What are yours? OK, so you're right with sour
pets kids and Skittles and Starbursts are interchangeable.

(04:19):
So you can go either direction. I'm going to go Skittles for
quantity because you get more inthe trick or treat bag of
Skittles than you do in the 2 pack of Starburst.
And you obviously always exclusively hoping, hoping for
the double pink, which happens not as frequently as you'd hope.
And then? Or red in a pink, but that's me.

(04:40):
Orange and pink, and then you gotta go Twix.
I knew you were gonna say Twix. I knew something just told me
you're a Twix. And then the 4th 1 is so tough
because it's gotta be chocolate 'cause you gotta have a
chocolate to to fruity candy balance and.
Halloween was the only time I ever ate a Snickers because a
whole Snickers is too much. But like the bite size 1I.

(05:02):
Don't understand why there's veins in the Snickers I.
Don't know they've drizzle the chocolate on top.
Just weird, but I'm gonna go Reese's Peanut buttercup.
Reese's Peanut, Buttercup, Twix,Sour Patch Kids, Skittles are
the let. Me ask, let me ask you this.
This is important to me. Then is the is it?
Which is better at just a standard Reese's Peanut

(05:23):
Buttercup or the specialty holiday shaped ones like the
pumpkin or the Christmas tree? Special Reese's Peanut Buttercup
Come at me with that fucking gold aluminum foil wrapper.
Peanut Buttercup. It's got to be single Peanut
Buttercup Orange package. Whatever.
You know what I'm talking about.Yeah.
Yeah, it's a Halloween one. That's what you want on

(05:43):
Halloween. The square.
Square orange. Classic Reese's.
Correct. But you know how there's those
little gold wrapper ones, right?Oh, the minis, the.
Cups the minis. The don't even bother the peanut
cups. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Don't even bother. No, no, I I do like the shaped
one. I like the pumpkin shaped ones
too, but I mean, it tastes the same.
I just feel like there's a more thicker, something's different.

(06:04):
The peanut butter sticker, Is there more chocolate?
Yeah. That's probably more something.
'S different. And then this had me on the
thing of the Mount Rushmore Little Debbie snacks.
OK I I only really like 2 littleDebbie snacks.
What are they? Oatmeal cream pie.
OK, that's one of the BIG4. Yeah, and nutty buddies.

(06:25):
OK, you got two of the four. Number three is Cosmic Brownie
and #4 is Honey Bun. I I don't really do again the
chocolate thing man. Like I know nutty buddies have a
thin layer of chocolate but it'smostly wafer and peanut butter.
The the cosmic brownies too much.
What was the 4th 1 you said? Decadent honey bun.
Oh yeah, honey, I forgot about honey buns.
Yeah, I totally do. A honey bun too.
I have a friend that has never had like trashy Little Debbie

(06:49):
snacks. They live in California.
They just haven't. It just wasn't what they grew up
with. And so I'm like, yes, I want to
see my friend, but more importantly, I want to like buy
the gamut of Little Debbie snacks and like have like a sit
down every single one rank them, you know, and I want everything.
I want pecan pinwheel, I want Swiss roll.

(07:11):
I want. How do you feel about a Star
Crunch? It's tough because Star Crunch
belongs in the top 4, but then like you're sacrifice and Honey
Bun for Star Crunch, It's it's abig, it's a big move.
Star Crunch feels like a aft like a dessert and a honey bun,
although also great as a dessertcould also be.
Breakfast. Yeah, it could be breakfast
food, cup of coffee, honey bun. That's a way to go though.

(07:32):
Cup of coffee and a honey, but it's a way to go.
You know they have nutty, they have nutty buddy cakes now.
What? It says nutty buddy cake.
I'll be damned. And it literally looks like a
chocolate covered Twinkie, except instead of cream it's
peanut butter. Oh, that sounds outstanding.
It does. It does sound outstanding.
I kind of want one I've never seen.

(07:52):
Single monitoring it again tonight, which you know, is not
my favorite. You, you hate it so much.
I hate it dude, I really hate it.
I love being able to Dick aroundon Spotify while also talking to
you. Like look shit up.
Yeah. I'm very excited for tonight's
theme. Let me tell you about this funny
dupe that I got involved in today and then we can talk more

(08:14):
theme Mall of America dinnertime.
I'm like, God, I don't want to eat mall food, but Mall of
America isn't really mall food because it's so gnarly.
You have you been? Never, never been OK.
It's nuts. I could have eaten at Rainforest
Cafe tonight if I really wanted to.
They still have a Rainforest Cafe.
Huh, I thought this all shut down.
Not the one in Mall of America, but I would have had anything,

(08:35):
like I could have had anything. And I'm like, all right, I, I
kind of want like, oh, what about like ramen?
Like maybe I'll have ramen for dinner.
And so I'm like wandering aroundand of course there's a ramen
spot and I see like a couple like there's a ramen spot in
because there's two food courts and there's a ramen spot in one
of the food courts. But that food court is slightly
less inviting than the other food court because the other
food court is like restaurants and food.

(08:58):
There's a fucking Long John Silvers in Mall of America.
There's still those as well. I kind of, I haven't had Long
John Silvers in years, but that kind.
Of nobody has nobody has had long John Silvers in years.
And so I'm like, all right, I'm going to go to the other food
court and see what they got. And I walked past this noodle
spot and it's like noodles. And then there's this brothless
ramen, this garlic, whatever. And like you pick your protein

(09:21):
and you pick a side and I'm like, all right, this is
perfect. This is exactly what I want.
This is great for being on the road.
Food. Can I order my food and I queue
up my episode of The Chair Company?
Which if you haven't yet, you need to.
I haven't. I got kicked off my sister's HBO
because HBO is cracking down. So now I'm going to have to pay
for my HBO. They are.
They're like they it was like this isn't this isn't your

(09:43):
normal location. Yeah.
Are you traveling or whatnot? If you log back in, you can get
back in OK. So yes, you'll need to get your
sister's login. Rachel Roderick needs the code
for so we can watch The Chair Company.
It's exactly what you'd expect from Tim Robinson.
Neither here nor there. I order my food, I queue up my
episode and I I go and sit down at my table and I look at my

(10:04):
receipt and the top of the receipt says Noodle, Noodle and
Company. It was just noodles and company
it. Was just noodles and company but
they like it. Didn't say it on the outside of
the restaurant and the only reason I found out is because it
said on the top of my receipt. I got duped by you.
Got duped. You got duped.
It's ridiculous. It's wild I'd we we drove past 1
today on the way to this hotel and I literally said I can't

(10:26):
remember the last time I had noodles and company I stayed.
I made that statement an hour ago.
I couldn't remember the last time I had noodles and company
and let me tell you something pretty fucking good.
Now it's. Tonight I always liked it.
It was it was for like a quick meal.
It was pretty good you. Know it was like this spicy
garlic Asian noodle thing like ramen, like brothless ramen, low
grilled chicken, low side of broccoli.
I mean, that's a great meal for on the road.

(10:48):
It was either that or Papa John's breadsticks.
Yeah, yeah. I mean, you don't want that.
I don't want. Nobody's eating Long John
Silver's Long John Silver's How you feeling about tonight's
theme? I'm feeling excited, I'm feeling
great. It was a fun one to research.
And stuff. Really fun.
It's a good time I. Have great songs.
Yeah, I'm excited. Yeah.
You want a little bit of music news?

(11:09):
Yeah, of course I always want music news.
Yeah, I mean it. It's slim Pickens, but you got
it. We got to do it.
Yeah. This isn't music news, this is
home improvement news. Like the TV show Home
Improvement? Tim Allen News.

(11:29):
I'm getting new Windows at my home, Felco.
If anybody lives in the Midwest for colony windows, signings and
more, call 866 for Felco. I did.
I'm getting Felco windows. So best of the estimates that I
got the company that I have chosen not to go with his
universal windows. And let me tell you something, I
have never been more confident with my decision to go with

(11:50):
Felco instead of Universal Windows.
Because when Universal Windows called me the first time and I
was like, you know what? Unfortunately, I've decided to
go with somebody else. They have since called me 11
times and I just don't answer. I told you like, you're a bad X
at this point. Universal Windows I'm.

(12:10):
Not going with you. I said no.
No. No means no.
Absolutely universal windows. Called out.
Yeah. All right.
Music news all. Right, I'm gonna go kind of
speed round here. Just one word reactions.
Johnny Depp launched his own record label.
Bummer. Bummer.
Yeah. Kenny Chesney in the Country
Music Hall of Fame. Good.

(12:30):
Yeah. Big hats.
Biggest hats. Yeah.
Yeah. Lily Allen has announced her
first album in seven years. Great.
Lily Allen fan. I'm stoked on that.
You know who she's married to. Yeah, Hopper from.
Hopper Yeah. How wild is that?
I don't know why that's so wild to me.
Mel C announces her first album in six years, Mel C of The

(12:51):
Spice. Girls, Yeah.
Sporty Spice, Yeah. Did you know she had any solo
records? Here you said one word answers
OK. OK, yeah, Ace freely passed
away. Bummer.
Bummer even. You know what's OK?
I was about to say even more of a bummer, but it's not.
Him passing is the bigger bummer, but it also means now we
have to hear Gene Simmons talk abunch because now he's in

(13:14):
interviews about Ace. Fingers crossed that when Gene
Simmons is talking, he's actually talking about Ace
Freely's passing and not himself.
So far he is, but I still just can't stand to hear that guy
talk. He just drives me nuts.
Yeah. Britney Spears has claimed that
she has brain damage from the conservatorship, from the trauma

(13:36):
from that. That's not new news.
I mean, we've been watching it on social media for the last
several years. But this is the first time she's
come out and straight up said she believes is brain damage.
Or maybe a doctor does it. Seems like a cryptic post thing,
which is a lot of her stuff, butI wouldn't be surprised.
We've been watching it on socialmedia for the last several
years. We've been seeing something
going on for sure. It's such a sad situation.

(13:59):
Sure, that's it. That's all I had for music.
It was, it was a weird week, couple weeks for music news,
just a lot of albums being announced in which again, I
don't want to go down that rabbit hole 'cause it's just,
there's too much music being being announced all the time.
So like, why? Why get into it?
Do we want to do weather? Do you have the weather queued?
Up I can't. We can do weather if you want to
do weather. I'm always.
Gonna do weather. Yeah, let's do it.

(14:24):
Fall is here. Yeah.
Fall is here and it is perfect in every way.
Overcast, Cold. Everything I've wanted for the
last several months is finally here.
It it's finally here where I live too, not where I am right
now, because I'm in. Mr. Little Beach over here, Mr.
Fucking. Although the nights are nice

(14:46):
here. But yes it is.
It is here and I was just in Indiana last week for my
nephew's birthday. I saw a photo.
It was very cute. It was.
Gorgeous out and it, it felt nice, you know, it was just
great. I went for an evening fall walk
the other day that most of our podcast has been turned into me
showing you pictures on my phone.

(15:07):
Look at this foliage. Oh, it's beautiful.
Look at this. Foliage.
Look at this, Look at the Reds and.
Purples. I'm a fucking nature.
Photographer, for Christ's sake.Gorgeous.
It's. Gorgeous.
Standing all right. Guest time.
Theme time. Yeah, let's bring a guest.
And let's bring a guest and bring in a theme.

(15:28):
Why hello there. It's me, John Gobblecon, host of
the number one comedy podcast inthe world.
If you don't Google it. This is for little gimmicks.
This is for their pod. Oh, wait, no little gimmicks.
Carl, let me try this again. Oh my God, you think being the
number one comedy podcast host in the world, I would be really

(15:50):
good at AD reads, but I am kiss legsid.
Sorry, dyslexic. I would say the word backwards.
Anyways, this is for the podcastknown as Mixtape.
Yeah, entering season 5 and theywant you to know their sponsor
that they love little gimmicks, which by the way, I'm not really

(16:12):
a fan of gimmicks. You have it fans that dress it
up and wear bass and stuff. Seems a little cheap, but hey,
this is a sticker company and they're awesome, so make sure to
check out little gimmicks right now. 5 fellow podcasters mention

Instagram. Little Gimmicks B plus stickers
that hold up to this. How?
To. Make.
Mix tape Roderick when we. Decided that we were going to
start a podcast. Did you ever think it would be
something where we made dreams come true?

(16:57):
Never. Never imagined, I never thought.
That would be the case just my. Dreams, but you had.
Dreams of being a podcast, just talking.
About music with my buddy OH. That's cute.
I also love that last time we spoke you were really stoked on
that bottle and I think it's so fucking nerdy.
It is nerdy. But oh, can I show you my
bottle, Kate? The listeners can't see this.
It's just a water bottle. But it it's a phone stand.

(17:20):
Why would you ever? Need that on your water bottle.
I already used it on the. Plane on the way I used it on
the plane, it was great. Set it on my 'cause there wasn't
a a thing for my phone so I set it on my tray.
I think our algorithms are different.
Kate, would you make? Fun of him on the plane, I
absolutely. Would and I would caution you
that if you, if you too, too much straw action, you're gonna
get wrinkles. See.

(17:41):
Yeah. But look at that fancy, look at
that, that great 5:00 shadow. He's going to cover like a.
Straw. I'd spill it without a straw.
Kate, welcome. To the pod, hi, thank.
You for having me? First British guest.
Whoa. Yes.
Second Canadian guest, Yes, and 1st mother of Sully Nice.
Sweet sweet boy. Is he around somewhere?

(18:03):
He is not. I'm looking after Savannah's dog
as well so I built a house full of dogs so I actually don't know
where he is, but it's a small apartment so he's somewhere.
The dogs sounds. Incredible.
So do. Sully and.
Savannah's dogs get along. Yeah.
And Sully. 'S and Savannah's dog's name is
Sunny, so it's a whole thing. Sunny and Sully, it's.

(18:24):
Confusing. Very cute though.
It's painfully, I would say we talked about it.
In the intro, are you any good at snacking?
Like consuming? Snacks.
Yeah, that's. I don't really believe in Neil's
to be honest, if we. Had see, I think this is where
we're going to go wrong though, because you're number one,
you're British, number two, you're Canadian.
If we had to go the Mount Rushmore of Little Debbie

(18:46):
Treats, I don't know what that is.
What is a little? I know what a little, Yeah.
Do you do they? Even have little listen they.
We do have Little Debbie's, and I only know that because my
mother's name is Debbie and it'slike a whole pot, a whole bit
for her. I don't know what else there is
except for the actual Little Debbie itself.
What is the Little? Debbie, is that a treat?
Yeah, it's like a Swiss roll. Yeah, it's one of it's one of

(19:08):
Little Debbie's snacks, one of the litany.
Of what? Could loosely be called baked
goods. Very loosely.
Next time I come up to. Canada, I'll bring the line up
and we'll do a a formal review of how are you going to get.
That whole line up, dude, there's like 25 different
things, yeah. That's I mean we're discovering

(19:29):
individuals at gas stations and then I'll just bring the
individuals and we'll just go from there.
So the mainstage you're. Going to bring the mainstage is
is little. Debbie the umbrella like is it
the the full? Is there a Little Debbie stand?
OK, OK, Little Debbie's the. Umbrella and she has a series of
treats as well, like. Oatmeal.
Cream pies, honey buns, nutty. Bungs this is.

(19:52):
Something, that's how. Shit.
Together. Yeah, that's true.
Very American. Very American.
Absolutely. But then again, if.
We had to ask you candies you'd throw out the wrong kind of
smarties and coffee crisps. So I wouldn't even.
Yeah, and. I love coffee crisps, the
British ones are the worst is fantastic.
Yeah. And I didn't like British ones
are the worst. Like what?

(20:13):
What do we have to offer? Biscuits.
Like a digestive. Not great.
It's not looking good for us. Yeah.
But I do love a. Jaffa Cake.
OK, Roderick. Is it a cake or is it a cookie?
This is a national bake. Oh, that's right.
Roderick I would probably. Call it a cookie, but.
I'm. But I'm American, so.
Roderick. Loves to go across the pond to

(20:36):
watch football. Oh no.
Roderick, what sort of what sortof team do you support?
I've been a Liverpool. Fan since I was a kid, I can get
on. Board with that and get on board
with that. I had a couple a.
Couple scousers come and stay the summer with my family doing
like a soccer camp when I was a kid.
So you. Know.
It's been. Liverpool ever since.
So it's a. It's a dare I ask are.

(20:58):
You do you support? Do you support?
Listen, I'm not a big. Football girl.
But I have some friends of friends who have fans in
Liverpool and I'll I'll accept it.
I just won't accept like sort ofAston Villa, you know, OK, My,
my best bud. Brian, he's been on the pot a
couple times. He's a Villa fan, big Villa fan.
Oh. Boy, I, I mean, I go for like
League 2 Swindon towns really where, where the, where the

(21:20):
action is. I love.
The I just love the name SwindonTown.
It sounds so British. Everything about it just sounds
so riveting. Podcast.
Jesus Christ. I stopped listening.
I'm I'm I've got the Little Debbie lineup just swirling
around up here. You.
Never. Explained you you introed Kate
by saying that we've made dreamscome true and that you never

(21:42):
explained what dream we were making come true.
Don Oh Kate has a dream to. Be on a podcasting yeah, for
sure Kate has a dream to be on apodcast.
I do. We were able to make that
happen, yes. I.
Was explaining to Donnie that I am like a huge podcast consumer.
I listen to them basically all day and it's just a dream.
I'd love to be a guest. I don't think I have any place

(22:02):
hosting a podcast. No one needs to listen to sort
of me, but I would like to be a guest.
I got to be honest. Nobody needs to listen to us
either. I don't think needing to listen
is it has anything to do with people starting a podcast but.
What would your podcast be about, Kate, if you were?
If you were to host it, what would it be?
I would really. Like a podcast at the interview
style and then it just be hot takes.

(22:25):
You know, I'd like to be the theman on the street, if that such
as it is, asking people for their hot Jakes and just sort of
breaking them down. So I think people are sitting on
some hilarious opinions and we don't hear it enough.
I had this silly. Series of things that I called
redliners for a while, and redliners are the littlest
things that take you from zero to I'm the most mad I've ever

(22:46):
been in my life. And so like redliners are like
whatever those tiny things are. So like, for example, if I go to
your gas station, this isn't a Canadian thing, you might not
understand. If I go to your gas station to
fill up my Diet Coke and your fountain machine is broken or
dispenses Clearwater, I'm throwing the fucking cup at the
machine and I'm storming out like a toddler.

(23:08):
And as you. Should.
Because it's not doing what it said it was going to do, which
is dispense Diet Coke. And I'm assuming if you're
getting gas station Diet Coke, you're in a tough situation
emotionally. No, no, not.
Done. It's like a daily occurrence for
this guy. But I, I, I understand what
you're saying, Kate, because that makes a lot of sense.
But Nope, not for. Done, not for.
Done daily occurrence. Mine would be.

(23:30):
Do you have a red liner? Yeah, I absolutely do.
It's hand dryers in public restrooms.
They are cacophonous. I feel like it's have been
stabbed in the ears when people turn them on because usually
it's in a tile rooms. The noise of a hand dryer just
ricochets. That's that's for me.
That's a great. One that's a perfect red liner.

(23:50):
I actually heard. Recently that they stay, it was
specific for those Dyson ones, you know, that have like the you
put your hands in and pull them out that they found that like
there's so many germs in those things because people don't wash
their hands properly and nobody cleans the dryers because you
think they're clean because supposedly clean hands.
So they tested those and they'relike filthy.
So don't use those dice in my hand.

(24:12):
Dryers, I'm just imagining them. They're spraying, so spraying
the germs down. That's nice.
You've all. You've all seen it, the person
who just runs their hand under the water and pretends like
that's somehow cleaning their hands and then they go use the
hand dryer. Gross.
I've never done. That.
Because you're good. You're you're.
A good sweet boy. Don never done that.
I would never be that guy, Rod. Roderick, what's your red line?

(24:34):
Roderick Which? Is.
I, I, I have a lot, but you knowthe one that's coming to mind
right now because it just happened to me like 3 times
today. And this isn't that hot of a
take because it's all over thesedays with our with millennials.
But the Gen. Z stairs really getting to me.
Like I've it's happening at likerestaurants now when I walk up
to order something and they don't say a word to you.
They just stare at you. It really it's infuriating to

(24:56):
me. Like they're.
Wait, you know what I mean? It's like there's there's a
social contract here. Like this supposed to be a
conversation, right? Like that's driving me nuts.
Or they do say something, but itmakes it's like almost
threatening like I've had some like like what do you want?
Like what do you want? Like what do you mean?
What do I want your your cashierto at a restaurant like I want
to order like this. What's on this works vaguely

(25:18):
threatening. It's.
So good. Yeah, yeah.
I don't think they mean to be threatening.
It's just no understandably awkward.
That's a good one. I get it, COVID messed them up,
but Roderick's also. Six pieces of saltwater taffy in
at this point as well I am I. Have one piece left and I can't
wait to. I'm going to.
Yeah, go ahead. Absolutely they gave me.
Saltwater taffy at. My at my they gave me like a

(25:40):
whole bag of it when I checked into this hotel.
That's how bad it. Is that they're just giving it
away. It's so nice.
What they, what they? Give you Donnie at your hotel.
Do you got anything good? Yeah.
A blank stare and they asked me what I They asked me what I
wanted. What do you want?
What do you want? Perfect.
Yeah. All right, Kate, what's our

(26:01):
what's our theme for this mixtape?
Our theme is. Songs that tell a story, which I
love the idea of and I would argue is all songs, but I get
where we're going. I I think that's a strong
argument, but I think we also all understand the assignment
here and. Don.
And I were talking about how much fun this was.

(26:22):
So some episodes, every episode is fun and good and like,
interesting, but some are frustrating when we're picking
our songs for various reasons. And this I think Don and I both
agreed that this was not one of those.
This was just a good time, yeah.I I learned a lot too, you know,
like stories you think you know, and then you, you Fact Check
yourself and you're way off. Yeah, same.

(26:43):
I, I was, I surprised or some, or there's a couple songs that I
was pretty sure told a story andthen you listen to it and you're
like, well, it's actually very vague and abstract and which is
fine, but like, I thought, I thought there was a story there
and there wasn't. I can't.
Tell you, the last time I had eight songs coming out the gate,
like it's usually like 6 and I'mscrambling for the 6th.
I had eight and I could have had12.

(27:05):
So I feel I feel great about my 8.
You feel ready to. Go.
I feel ready. To go.
I got backups, I got, I got fun.I got silly, I got serious.
I'm ready. Well then.
Why don't I read these guidelines and we can get going
here? Christ, you ask for the
guidelines, still you know you love it the.
Listeners, all right, here we go.
Remember, Don always pretend this is a Redliner.

(27:27):
For me, Kate's going to agree. Kate's going to agree with me
because she's a big podcast consumer.
This could be somebody's first episode.
I know you've heard the rules a million times, but this could be
somebody's first six. 56 times to be the exact.
Yeah, I know. We.
All know, all right, Number one,you gotta have a killer opening
track #2 each song should flow smoothly into the next.

(27:47):
Number 3, the mix tape should have a good balance of different
genres, tempos and moods #4 The mix tape should tell a story or
convey an emotion to tell a story.
Very apropos for this episode #5can't be too obvious but can't
be too obscure either. Number six, you can't double up
on songs by the same artist and #7 the closing track should
leave a lasting impression. Can.

(28:10):
Any songs? Do you have?
I have like. Four or five I feel good about
and some backups just in case wetake several left turns couple
of. Honorable Mentions Couple of
honorable. Mentions exactly.
Great call, Kate. Do you want to go first, second
to third? I want to go. 1st that's the
right call. It's the smart move.
It's the smart move. That way if you pull something
that I would have wanted, I can't have it exactly.

(28:32):
Exactly. I'm assuming like, you know, the
first song has to send a messageand the last song has to send a
message. So yeah, that's not a feeling.
Let's. Hear what you got, OK?
I have the song Goodbye Earl by the Chicks.

(28:52):
It's a great song, great story. It's a great song.

(29:13):
It's a great. Story great.
Story as well. That's a great video, truly.
I mean, it's a triple threat. Nothing truly.
Nothing like a country murder ballad, you know, like that's a
genre in and of itself maybe. Yeah, that's the listing, yes.
I know that. Rob Harvilla on 60 Songs that
Explain the 90s did this song and spoke about like the

(29:38):
sisterhood around the support ofthe domestic abuse situation.
The song and it was so emotionalof how this song like was so
important for women navigating these situations and like the
relationships. I remember like borderline
getting emotional at that episode of 60 songs and it is

(29:58):
such a good song and hell of a story.
Hell of a story. Hell of a story.
And I think it has a little likecross cultural impact too,
right? It's been linked to like Thelma
and Louise Fried Green Tomatoes. It's not a song, just stands on
its own. It's kind of what tentacles and
all different sorts of eyes also.
The Chicks did with this song what they do with a lot of their

(30:19):
music too, which is they take a a genre like a genre like
country, which has been very male dominated and conservative
and all these things. And they take something like a
murder ballad, which is totally a thing in country music.
But they turn it on its head andmake it about women's
empowerment and make it about, you know, sticking up for
yourself, basically. But also funny and also awesome,
right? So like, they're, yeah.

(30:41):
I mean, this song were they, I'msure they were big before this,
I think, but this song made themabsolutely massive.
I I mean, this song was everywhere there was.
Big celebrities in the video? I think so.
Right. I can't remember who it was.
I can't remember who. It was, it was some guy that was
like at the time 'cause the song's a a little older.
The guy was on like one of thosecop dramas of like the late 90s

(31:05):
and then one of the girls, damn,I can't remember who it was but
it was like a a grip of popular actors and actresses that were
in the video. It was good, great video.
I. Double checked to make sure that
it was not a repeat podcast songbecause I thought that it was

(31:27):
one of my me first in the Gimme Gimme's pics, but it was not.
There's only been. One me first.
In the Gimme Gimme song and it was Rocket Man.
But if you haven't heard me first and the Gimme Gimme's
cover of Goodbye Earl. Outstanding cover that Earl had
to die. Must listen.

(31:52):
I haven't heard it, I'm just sort of a chick's purist, but.
Are you, are you familiar with me first, me first thing.
Do you have any relationship? No.
Not at all. Will you quickly?
Put them at the top of your Spotify list so you can
prioritize giving them a whirl. OK, good.
I think that you would love thiswith no context.
I think that you might love me first thing, Gimmies.
Roderick. Who's Roderick?

(32:13):
Who's next? You are shit.
All right, hold on a second. I'm happy to go next.
If you want though, no, that'll.Break the whole thing, but it's
it's your turn. OK, we.
We've had this artist only on one time, which is, well, hold
on because I might go with a different one.
Hold on. Doing the research while you're
on the pod for sure. Oh no.
I did the research, amateur. I did the research before.

(32:35):
OK, nevermind. I'm going with this one.
I'm going with Gypsy Tramps and Thieves by Cher.
Read your little. Gospel sell a couple.
Bottles, Doctor. We hear it from the people of

(32:57):
the town, they call it. Have.
We had any. Share We have not.
Had any share hell? Yeah, I'm glad to have.
We've talked about Cher a lot. We've talked about Cher.
Ageless. And incredible, beautiful.
But yeah, and like, also a hell of a story.

(33:19):
Like such a cool song and such acool Cher song.
OK, left. OK, dude, I had the craziest,
most bizarre candy corn adjacentmix that I've ever had in my

(33:39):
life. It was it was by Brock's, so
same company as the candy corn. But.
They were. Five different flavors and
different shapes within there. So there was a leaf that was
Maple. There was.
It was like. Fiver.
Hey, welcome back. That's OK.

(34:01):
I think we're still recording, but we're also on another candy
tangent. Oh.
OK. Does Canada?
Have candy corn, Yes. It's gross, OK.
It is gross. Until you eat it with peanuts.
Yeah, have you? Oh, will you?
Yeah. Will you prioritize that, mix in
little peanuts? You could bring this to Canada,
you could see. Handedly.
Be responsible for bringing a new snack to Canada?
Put it down, yeah. Because otherwise I kind of find

(34:23):
it peanuts inedible. Yes, salted.
Peanuts and. Candy corn.
OK, but back to Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.
Hell of a story, hell of a song.Fantastic vocal performance,
very karaoke able. And.
Young Cher, prior to the Do you believe in life after love
resurgence? What's the?

(34:44):
Story This is straight hair. My mom used to dance in a
traveling show. Yeah, it's all.
About like it's about the story of her mother and father.
Like not her mother and father, but the story of the singer.
'S mother and. Father being gypsies and like,
just the like the whole being brought up in like a circus kind
of. And the song reflects it too.

(35:05):
Like it's got a lot of crazy instruments.
There's a lot of bells. But.
Yeah, it's a great song. It's an interesting.
Song because like the verses have a like an old like.
Western 60s country western. Vibe to them, yeah.
But then then the chorus or the other parts of the twinkly
little bells and stuff is reallyinteresting song, Yeah.

(35:26):
It's got kind of a country Western vibe to it.
Yeah, and it's old and then the fleet like.
A Fleetwood Mac sounding chorus?Kind of, yeah.
It's good old share. Yeah, it's great.
Good old. Share Great album cover Do you
know how I love good album cover?
Really cool. Old share Old as in young looks

(35:47):
the exact but looks the exact same pretty much.
Yeah, her and Paul Rudd, right? Like untouched by Time.
It's unreal. It's insane.
There's got to be something going on, like, what is Cher?
Wrong. That's a great question.
Speaking of Cher. Have you guys seen the Witches
of Eastwick? Yes, the.
TV show or the Yeah the movie? Old classic Cher movie Cher,

(36:07):
Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon Stacked cast.
Stacked. Cast Jack Nicholson, he's the
devil. Great movie.
Fantastic. Movie.
Now I wanna watch it for Halloween.
Now that's that's a great Halloween watch.
That's a great Halloween watch, yeah.
But yeah, Cher, Gypsy, Strengthsand thieves.
Great song. Great.
Alright, that's yeah. Great job.

(36:29):
I had a different initial first pick, but given the those two,
I'm actually gonna keep the sametheme going 'cause this was
gonna be a pick. So I also have an old western
love ballad slash murder ballad in mine, so I'm going under
Rolls by Garth. Brooks, it is not.
Older than that, I'm going with El El Paso by Marty Robbins.

(36:53):
Blacker than night were the eyesof Anina.
Wicked and evil while casting a spell, My love was deep for this
Mexican maiden. I was in love, but in vain, I
could tell. OK, out in.

(37:14):
The West town of El Paso, you know the song he he falls in
love with a barmaid, but she flirts with another guy, so he
challenges the guy to a gunfightout in town, kills him, has to
run off and go hide in Mexico. Just country western as 19. 60s.
Country Western. Yeah, like just a It's literally
on an album called Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs.

(37:37):
So wait, what's the name of the album?
Gunfighter. Ballads and trail songs on the
nose. It's so good.
Right on the nose. Yeah, and.
It was this was like my grant, my mother's mother, like, this
was her wheelhouse. Like she listened to some Glenn
Miller and stuff, but she listened to a lot of like
country western balladeer singertypes like Marty Robbins.

(37:58):
So I grew up listening to some of this stuff.
It's very like like Tex Mex. And like, I know that's a,
that's a food type and not a music type, but if it was music,
it would be this. What I didn't know until I
looked this up was this was the number one song.
Like this was Billboard number one in the US, South Africa,

(38:18):
Canada. Oh yeah #19 in the UK.
Oh, let me. Sign down.
I don't know if the country in West, Yeah, no, but. 19 as a
country western song feels pretty good in the UK, right?
What year we. Don't know 19. 59 country wasn't
necessarily the 1st place my brain went, but you can't avoid

(38:39):
country or country influence music when you're talking story
songs because like it comes fromlike the whole folk music
tradition which is all about passing stories down.
So it makes sense. I hope I didn't.
Steal anybody's pick with Garth Brooks.
The Thunder rolls because that is a hell of a story song.
I had a couple. Garth Brooks songs on my long
list, but it's just this felt a little more me like, yeah, you

(39:01):
know, I grew up listening to some of this stuff.
So yeah, it's a great. Call.
Yeah, so. We got we got the Western, the
country and the western and stuff.
That's I wish. Well, I mean, Cher isn't.
I mean, it's got some No, but that that song.
'S got a little bit of where you're coming from.
All right. Good call, Katie, you ready with
your next pick? I am.

(39:22):
I'm taking so we've we've done the country and western, we need
a transition. Yeah, right.
This is a transition in where are we going?
It sounds sort of twangy countryand western, but it's opening
the door to sort of like other genres and I, and I can't tell
if you guys are going to hate this because it's so down down
the main Rd. but I really have always loved this song.

(39:44):
World Grace's submarine test by John Mayer.
And his. Wife told his kids he was crazy
and his friends said he'd fail if he tried.
But with a way. To work hard and a library card.

(40:16):
And John Mayer is like not who you would think of as being a
storyteller in this way. I just love this song.
It's like about a submarine, theguy who goes on a journey, the
narrator who dies, and it's about his wife.
And a third person narrative is this whole fantasy day he has.
And I used to skip this song when it first would come all on
my shuffle like 10 years ago. So I don't like the minor tones.

(40:40):
When I opened, it kind of jawed me out from whatever I was
listening to. But I like it.
I think it's kind of like folksyand fun.
And again, making light of a tragic way to go.
I have no. Relationship with this Roderick
do you? None.
I'm listening to it right now. It's got a sweet like muted
trumpet in the opening though. It sounds real sexy.
I thought that was. Less than 0 chance I was going

(41:02):
to come up with a song. You have no relationship with
it, so I've. Not I, I.
I can't say I've gone deep in the John Mayer catalog outside
of singles, like the radio hits that you would have, that I
would have heard. That's fair, that's fair.
He's kind of like he's got some good stuff down in the the
bottom of the catalog. Where did?
John Mayer come from for you, Kate.

(41:23):
Was it pop music that brought him to you or did you?
It was just like pop radio hits.It was that.
Movie called the bucket list that came out, you know, those
two older gentlemen and the and the end of that the credit scene
is a is a John Mayer song. And I remember watching it with
my dad and I was like, this is this is catchy.
And it was like before Shazam orencore, we're pulling it.

(41:47):
He's searching around for it. I found him and then he saw
them. Obviously Gravity and all that
subsequent fame arrived, or maybe he's kind of at the same
time, but Pop definitely got it.You know, I've never seen Bucket
Bucket List, but I I know the movie like it's the Morgan
Freeman movie, right? Yeah.
So good. Yeah.
Is it Jack Nicholson? No.
Maybe we do 2 Jack Nicholson's at one.
Find out, Joe. Pesci, could you imagine?

(42:09):
It is Jack Nicholson. Damn.
Shut. Up, Jack, we're.
We're 6° of separation right now.
Hell of a. Musician was leading for the
Dead and Company for a while. Do you have any?
Like have you seen John Mayer live?
No relationship, hell of a guitar player.
He was playing guitar for Dead and Company for a long time and

(42:30):
it was a big deal. People were stoked.
That's crazy. He's dating a Tik Toker now in
case you're interested in his love life.
Well good for him. I remember all.
I know about all I know is him and Jennifer Aniston had a thing
for a while. Years and years ago.
He was the kind of like. T Swift.
Yeah, he was like the. Timothy shouting Generation.
Yeah, he was all over the place,Yeah.
He he was or the Pete Davidson, Yes.

(42:52):
That's actually a better comparison.
I like that. I think Timothy's kind of warm
at all, this guy. Good call, hey.
I've opened the door, I think. But Donnie, you have like.
Sorry, I'm I'm, I'm a little quiet, but I'm just listening to
it. It's a really pretty song I
have. So many good songs to pick and
we haven't had anywhere near enough hair metal on any

(43:14):
episodes recently. Yeah, you're not.
Wrong. You're not wrong.
So we're going. 18 in Life by Skid Row.

(43:43):
Oh, and Skid Row too. This first Skid Row skid.
Row. Yeah, Kate, any relationship not
to that? Song but I to hair metal.
Yes, you have some hair. Metal relationship OK so
Sebastian Bach, singer Skid Row absolute heartthrob in his
heyday, gorgeous young man Skid Row what?
And also first time I I never saw a guy that had his nose

(44:05):
pierced and his ear pierced and had a chain going between the
two. Nobody cooler on the planet?
Nobody cooler. 18 in life is thestory about a kid who, you know,
bad, bad boy, you know, trying to get his act together but
just, you know, destined for thestreets and, you know, ends up
going to jail for being a bad guy, ended up shooting his
friend and then did some. 18 in life, you know, 18 in life.

(44:28):
Hence the story that's. Compelling sounds really sad.
Great wheelies. Hair metal.
Maybe not so sad. Oh, it's so.
Good. Broderick.
Are you just taking it in right now?
You're, you are deep in it rightnow.
I'm loving it. I'm loving it.
It's so. Good.
It's making me really. Happy and it's their biggest
song. I I don't really know this song
really it's. Their.
Biggest song. No, I.

(44:49):
Know I I know I remember you andI know I mean I'm I don't go
into like hair metal's fine, butI'm not like a hair metal guy
like you so but I don't know thesong, but I'm digging it man big
smile on my face so. I'll remember you as like their
monster ballad. You know, that would have been
their ballad, but 18 in life waslike their breakthrough.

(45:09):
And the video was cool as shit too.
It's every single 80s cliche youwould want from a music video.
He turned out to be kind of a nut, believe it or not.
Who saw that one coming? But in his heyday?
Absolute heartthrob. Like such a honk the chain on
the. Face, he didn't.

(45:30):
Have that the guitar player did and the guitar player had a cool
ass name too. Roderick, do you want to come
through with the guitar player'sname for Skid Row is.
It Eric Gronwall, Is it that guyor is it somebody else?
No cooler name than. That OK.
I don't know. Are you wanting me to look it up
or do you have it? I think it's.
Dave Sabo. That's a full name.

(45:53):
I think it was Dave. Sabo Skid Row.
Guitarist Dave Sabo, Yeah, I think that's him.
Sebastian Bach. Was a good looking guy for for
sure I told you he. Was a hunk in his heyday.
Absolute hunk. I was just saying like.
Sebastian Bach, to me doesn't occur as a hair mental front
front man's name. Maybe that's why it's so

(46:13):
beautiful. Yeah.
I mean, Sebastian Phillip Bjork was his birth name.
Oh so. Sebastian's his real name,
Sebastian. Is his real name and also is a
Canadian American. Oh my.
Goodness, the parallels don't stop.
They just don't stop and. Fantastic.
Born in the. Bahamas.

(46:33):
Dude raised in. Canada.
His brother. Zach Beerk is a former
professional ice hockey player. We unravel it.
I know with. There's layers.
This is a It's a fine onion, butyeah, like, so.
You've gone wild. I'll remember you 18 of life the
big three off the first Skid Rowalbum.

(46:55):
I guess I just. Never because again, I didn't go
that deep. So I've probably heard a lot of
hair metal along the way, but I would know like you know, your
poisons and white snakes and Motley Crue's and some of that
stuff more. But like I always thought they
were just. As big like they were bigger,
well I know of. I know of Skid Row, I just
don't. I think I thought they were
heavier, like oh. No way Sebastian Bach has a

(47:18):
beautiful voice. Hell of a singer.
I just like I'm. I'm kind of cycling through a
lot of their songs now and they all have this kind of like,
yeah, it's that's it makes sense.
It highlights his voice really well.
I just thought with the name Skid Row, I just thought they
were like one of the more like heavier or punkier of the whole
metal bands, but they're definitely not.
No, they're. Fantastic.
Well, you know you're. Educating me?
Yeah. You're educating me on the

(47:40):
genre. I'll also.
Have you know Roderick Chicago not in the top five listening
cities I saw. I saw Bullet and it looks like
according to their photo on Spotify, Guy still has that nose
piercing there. Is still a chain.
From the nose to the ear. Several years later, there is.
We don't see that. Enough.
I don't see enough people over the age of 20 with the nose to

(48:02):
the ear chain. Bring it back.
No, Yeah, I think you're right. The exact.
Amount of deep V necks in this photo that I would would have
expected, which is 2 out of five.
You might maybe even a little low on the on the deep V
Rodericks. What?
Do you got? Yeah.
I'm gonna go, I'm gonna bring some hip hop in.
Also, I feel a grand tradition of great storytelling songs can

(48:27):
I guess. It's good.
It's I. Really like to guess so.
Much. You're welcome.
To guess. Is it Paul?
Revere by the Beastie Boys, no. OK.
No, I think it's it's one of themost This is one of the most
famous hip hop story songs, though, I believe, but I'm going
it was it was a case. That they gave me by OK, it was
a good. Day by Ice Cube.

(48:50):
Didn't. Even get no static from the
cowards because just yesterday them fools tried to blast me.
Saw the police and they roll right past me flexing.
Didn't even look in the brothersdirection as I ran the
intersection with the show dogs house.
They was watching. Yo on TV.
Rats. What's the hats on the craps?

(49:10):
Shake them up, Shake them up. Shake them up, shake them.
Murder was the case of being good.
But yeah, I mean, I it's, it's it's it's a front to back story,
you know, I know what he had forbreakfast.
I know what he didn't have for breakfast.
I know no hog. That's for sure.
No hog. There's no bacon on that
breakfast. Did you look up?
What day it was, Yeah. So it's.

(49:31):
It's that whole the Tumblr sleuth thing that happened about
a shit that happened like in 2012 that somebody did all the
all the work on it. But yes, January 20th, 1922 is
the day that fits everything that he says in the song.
No, not 19. 2219. 92 Did I say 22/19/92?
Yes, 19. 921992. So no, no murder in South

(49:54):
Central, no helicopters in the sky.
Like everything is the the weather description.
That would have been January 20th, 19 The Lakers beat the
SuperSonics. The Lakers beat the.
SuperSonics that day, small glist day, you could actually
see the city so good. I love that somebody figured
that out. I do too.
And I, I what I haven't found isice cubes reaction to which I'm

(50:16):
sure is out there somewhere. But like, because that that then
begs the question, was he actually writing a song about a
real day that he experienced with a real description or, or
was it just like I'm going to describe what a great day would
be and then somebody just did the Blake workin says that
realistically could have been this day.
You know what I'm saying? Like, did he actually experience
January 20th and write about it?Or was it just it's just a fun

(50:38):
little thing? It doesn't really matter to me.
I'm just curious if Ice Cube ever addressed it and I it
doesn't say on this article I'm reading right now if he did.
But my favorite part of the song, though, is when the That's
a Goodyear blimp, which this I don't think actually happened on
January 20th, but that's a Goodyear blimp, said Ice Cube's
a pimp on it. Like, I don't think that was

(50:59):
real, but let's hope it was. But it does say in. 2014 there
was a fundraising campaign to raise enough money to rent the
Goodyear blimp and have it say Ice Cube's a pimp on it.
Did it happen? Jimmy Late Night with Jimmy
Fallon sponsored it. Yeah, apparently it did.
Goodyear agreed to do it and they made it like a fund, a

(51:20):
charity fundraiser speaking. Of Jimmy Fallon, I think it's
time that he that he maybe hangsit up.
You think he should hang it up? You think he should transition
out? I watched a.
Segment with him and Charlie poof the other day where they
were like acting as though they were current.
No, no, no, they were. It was like a spoof skit where

(51:40):
they were like current generational children.
And it was so fucking uncomfortable to watch that I
was like, nobody's laughing at this.
This is the most awkward thing I've ever seen.
And I I think it's maybe time toto call it.
Yeah, but he's. Always had that.
Like he's always like, it's either really funny or it's
really uncomfortable and awkwardand he laughs at me.

(52:01):
That's kind of his thing. Who would you have?
Replaced Donnie, if you could choose.
That's a great question. That's a great.
Question. I have to think about that.
That's a great question, Pete Davidson.
Pete Davidson. What's he doing?
I guess he's acting. I guess he's got movies and
stuff. Yeah.

(52:22):
All right. Can.
You think we're back to you? Oh my.
Goodness, OK, I don't have any. I'm kind of like a hip hop rap
answer. So you don't have to.
It's not no, it's not going to be.
I mean, you just. Followed Skid Row with ice
cubes. So yeah, I mean you have to put
these in order anyway and like the right order that the that
the mix tape should go so you have your hands full right now.

(52:43):
OK, I'm going to go. With one of my odd pics because
I feel like this is going to it's not going to flow anyway.
How familiar are you with Kate Bush?
A bit. My sister was.
A huge Kate Bush fan. Amazing.
I can't say I was a huge Kate Bush fan or I was doing my
research, poking around what story songs This one came across
my desk. Let's say it's about Heads Were

(53:04):
dancing. I'm not.

(53:33):
Familiar with that one. I have no relationship.
It's about a woman. Who is?
She's asked to dance by a stranger, and she dances with
the guy. The next day she sees the
newspapers for photographs or whatever, and she realizes that
that man was Hitler. Which is a crazy left turn for
us. Long to say holy.

(53:53):
Shit. I know, I know.
What a story. It was, yeah.
Truly. So it's like inspired by
allegedly a friend of hers meeting Oppenheimer at a dinner
party and being like, completelyunaware of who he was, but
completely charmed by him. So this is where the inspiration
of the story came. But it's so weird.
It's very Kate Bush, and that isincredibly strange.

(54:15):
But I just thought it was the one of the weirdest story songs
I'd ever come across. That's what I'm saying in the
middle. That's fantastic.
What a cool, haunting voice she has all the time.
So cool. Oh.
Yeah. It doesn't matter what she's
singing about. It sounds like it.
Like it sounds like ghosts are singing it.
Yeah. I feel like Saint Vincent

(54:37):
followed pretty closely in Kate Bush's footsteps.
Equally is haunting. Slightly weirder, but Saint
Vincent is also pretty spooky, so.
Spooky. I'm sure a lot.
Of artists were influenced by her.
But I hear Bjork too. Like the way Bjork sings.
I'm like, she was like Kate Bushfor sure.
And then she kept. And then it got even weirder.

(54:57):
But yeah. You got to let him know, Let
your freaks fly and get out there.
Yeah, and like. Kate Bush, like from what I know
about her, she very much approached her music not as like
the art of just music, but as like art pieces in general, like
her albums and her songs were like conceptual and she was very

(55:18):
thoughtful in these things. And, and that's from what I
hear, that's how she approached everything.
So it makes sense the way she's structured these songs and these
stories, because she has a lot of story songs, right?
Like Werthering Heights's story song.
Like I only know I'm only familiar with like a handful,
but I think most of them are stories.
She's a very much a a storyteller, but this but also

(55:40):
dancing with Hitler. That's kind of wild.
So it's not I don't feel like a lot of people could pull that
off, but Kate Bush could totallypull that off.
She I. Mean, I don't know that she
pulled it off. I don't know if you could, but I
think the idea that it's a storysong that's just so bizarre is
very Kate Bush. I'm very.
Happy for her Stranger Things resurgence.
I hope that she got a lot, a lotof like more all over the place

(56:05):
fans versus just like the the Stranger Things song fans.
Yeah, but that fucking Stranger Things song has over a billion
streams on Spotify and I wonder what?
It's almost. 1 1/2 almost 1 1/2 billion, Yeah.
What did that thing? Sue wire to stranger.
Things. No.
So many, yes. That's how I.

(56:25):
Learned about Kate Bush was the placebo cover of Running Up That
Hill back in like the late 90s, I think early 2000s that they
released as a single like. And then when I found out it was
covered, then I went and listened to Kate Bush.
Like that was my first introduction to Kate Bush.
Yeah, Doctor, PCF was a Kate Bush fan.
Oh, so you'd heard it. Around around the house, I do
remember. Hearing some Kate Bush that

(56:47):
Doctor PCF was listening to, like late 90s or late, yeah,
late 80s, early 90s. So I remember some, then it's
Doctor. PCF Assistant.
Yeah, Doctor Pista Crab Face. Her name is Krista, but being
the mature child I was when I was making fun of my sister, I
called her Pista instead of Krista.

(57:07):
It's a. That's that's right there for
the taking. She has a.
Doctor. She has a doctorate, so now he
has to call her doctor. She's doctor.
Pista crap. Face, Yeah.
Yeah. Oh, for sure.
Joke's. On us, Nina, she's what is it
MDPHD, whatever it is, PhD. Yeah.
PhD Yeah, I have no idea what I want to pick next.

(57:29):
I have so many good songs. So you're stalling for.
Time well, I will say then I also when I did start listening
to Kate Bush more, I don't know if I had heard it before, if it
just felt familiar, but I love the song Babushka and I remember
feeling like I knew the song, which maybe I had heard it on
the radio or something, but that's another I mean she has a
lot of great songs, but I love babushka great songs.

(57:50):
She got a lot of like. I feel like her songs are
incredible. They get covered that often.
That's this trajectory of Kate Bush popularity, isn't it?
That cover will come back to it,which is kind of an unfortunate
trajectory, but still, I love itall right.
I think I'm going to lighten things up a bit after dancing
with Hitler. Listen and I think.

(58:13):
I'm going to lighten them up in a, in a, in the realm of
infidelity. Oh.
Nice and light, yeah. And the way of the song Escape
by Rupert Holmes. I was tired of my lady we'd
been. Together.
Too long, like a worn out recording of a favorite song.

(58:39):
So while she lay. There, sleeping, I read the.
Paper in bed. Also.
Known as yes. You are also known as the Pina
Colada song if you like. Pina colada if you're not into
yoga. If you have have.

(59:07):
A brain. Yep.
A. Song about a man who decided he
was over it one day and started creeping on his old lady looking
and taking out want ads and saying I don't want to be with
my wife anymore. Only to find out that his wife
was the one that was replying tohis blonde ads.
And then they decided that they loved each other still.
It's a love story. It it's a.

(59:30):
Weird love story. It's a strange.
Strange love story, so be honest.
With me Don the song weird. Does the song weird you out too?
No, it's so. Funny, Like the whole story is
weird. That's what I mean.
Great story. The song's a story.
The song's great karaoke like vibes of the song the 1st.
Line of the song is I was tired of my lady.

(59:52):
No, no. No, no, no, That's a bold.
Opening line he. He calls their.
Relationship. A worn out recording.
Yeah. So we've been.
Together too long, yeah, but a acatchy fucking chorus, a great
chorus, it's just. Like, I know it's been discussed
before. It is catchy as hell.

(01:00:14):
I guess it's kind of romantic, but ultimately it's it's not
only was he trying to cheat, butshe was too.
She was answering a call. But then they also learned that
they have this all this stuff incommon that they didn't know
about each other. It's like, what kind of
relationship do you have that you don't even know this about
each other? You didn't know that your wife
liked Pina Coladas and she didn't know that you liked Pina

(01:00:36):
colada. What the fuck you guys, Hawk and
all. Just strange.
Have you ever seen him? Have I ever seen?
Him. Yeah, Rupert.
Holmes, I'm looking. At him right now dude.
It is a questionable aesthetic. Oh boy is.
It. Describe it.
Yeah, describe it to me, becauseI have a picture of my mind and
I and I wanna be. I bet.

(01:00:56):
You, you're right. He looks, you know what he looks
like? He looks like the kind of guy
that would write a song that thefirst line was I was tired of my
lady. That's exactly what he looks
like. There are some.
There's some glasses. Involved there's a receding
hairline there's a suit like whyare we in a suit but they're.

(01:01:21):
The. 70s glasses that have like a like a slight brown or orange
tinge to them. Kind of.
Oh yeah. So he's I am.
He's. Yeah, that's that's a tough,
he's nerdy looking. He's nerdy looking.
Which way were you? Going Kate, I was going.
Like like a Jimmy Buffett look. I guess it's not dissimilar.

(01:01:42):
That makes sense. Though this song gives Jimmy
Buffett vibes for sure. In fact, I bet a lot of people
think this is a Jimmy Buffett song.
Who don't? Listen.
You know what I mean? Like a strung out Jimmy, You
know, poor man's Jimmy Buffett. Poor.
Rupert, man, people are giving Jimmy credit for his, for his,
his master, his opus. Yeah, it's crowning achievement.
Do you see the? Difference in place between

(01:02:03):
track 1 and track 2 on that top.Listen to tracks on Spotify.
I do see the difference. It is quite staggering,
substantial. Escape the Pina Colada song
703,000,000 streams him. Obviously the song that comes
after the Pina Colada song on the album 23 million.
It's a big drop, big drop. 680 million.

(01:02:28):
Drop. Yeah, Big.
Drop. But a?
Great. Lighten up the mood after
Hitler. Yeah, go.
From Hitler. To some infidelity.
But is it infidelity? Well, no.
It turned. Out not to be attempted.
Yeah, Attempted infidelity. Infidelity.
Yeah, yeah. On both their.
Parts, dude. There's a lot of weird shit on

(01:02:50):
this Roderick. You're the only one that has
brought a good positive story sofar.
With it with it was a good day. Hold on.
Hold on. The chicks, the chicks
murdering. Oh, the characters of the chicks
murdering his husband. I'm going to say good.
OK, now. OK.
Still murder, but we're going tosay positive murder.

(01:03:12):
Positive. But complicated positive murder.
Yeah, we've got. Gypsies, tramps and thieves,
We've got some swindling going on.
El Paso, we've got a murder. Yep, and a horse theft.
By the way, I I left that part Grace's.
Submarine death, right? Murder or death?
Death. Ato life, Skid Row murder.

(01:03:35):
Ice Cube was a good day. We're doing good, but it's good.
It's. Actively about how there were no
murders. Actively about no murders Kate
Bush heads were dancing a. Little bit of murder.
And then Rupert Holmes escape attempted infidelity.
All right, well, here we go. Where do?
We go. Next I I have an off the wall

(01:03:58):
pick, but it's a song that I've loved for a long time and it's
not up my alley at all, but it'sa great story.
It is. Well, let me ask this first.
Are either of you familiar with the what's the word?
I'm looking for virtual band studio killers.

(01:04:18):
Like. Virtual band is in the same way
that the gorillas, our virtual band, right like it.
It's real people recording the music, but the band itself are
made-up characters. Same thing with studio Killers.
And nobody knows who they actually are.
They're animated. It's Wikipedia literally says
it's a British, Finnish, Danish virtual band made-up of the

(01:04:39):
animated characters vocalist anddesigner Cherry, keyboardist
Goldie Fox, DJ Dynamink and manager Bipolar Bear.
OK, but anyway, the song is their, it was their break.
It was their first single. It was like their breakout song.
It's I don't know if it's their biggest song on Spotify still
because they had another big hit, but the song is called Ode

(01:05:00):
to the Bouncer. No.
I haven't had no dope. Lift up the other rope, Mr.
Dawn. I'm so teasing.
I'm freezing out of here. See, I got pills inside.
It's my birthday tonight and I'mnot wearing trainers.
Not to mention *** This feeds out to debate with Saint Peter

(01:05:22):
out of the gate. Made of protein and milkshake
and low carb intake. Oh no, you just got.
It's not their. Biggest song but OK.
So it is. Literally the cherry, the
singer. It is about her trying to get
into a club but the bouncers being a Dick and not letting her
in but letting all the like prettier girls in and it's her

(01:05:44):
birthday. So it's like the whole this
whole story, it's like her birthday.
Then she starts making fun of the bouncer and calling them a
prick and stuff and then by the end she remembers that she can
sneak in to the club through theladies bathroom window.
Who among us hasn't? Done that.
Absolutely. It's just a fun dancy disco wee,
but kind of weird in a good way.Like the the way he, I believe,

(01:06:08):
I actually believe the singer isa a man, but playing a woman in
the band. His voice is really interesting.
It's just got a really catchy chorus, which is basically
bouncer, Hey, bouncer, bouncer, bouncer, bouncer, but.

(01:06:37):
Really. Fun like their music videos are
all animated too. It's like computer animation
stuff. It's it's cool.
It's it's like. Yeah, Nuvo gorillas, How are you
out here? It's a great.
Question. I don't know where I got this.
I think it was at the time this came out, which would have would
have been like 2011, which was probably when I was going to a
lot of like music festivals. So it might have happened there.

(01:06:59):
I didn't see them necessarily, but like somebody I was going to
music festivals with cause like that was my Lollapalooza and
Riotfest era and stuff and I wasgathering a lot of random music.
So I, I think it probably was just somebody in my sphere who
was introducing me to other. So 'cause I was getting into
like junior senior and some of that dancey stuff then, but not,
but because people were showing me that stuff.

(01:07:21):
Yeah. So they're like same kind of era
that I would have gotten into that stuff.
I got into this and it's just a really fun song.
And their song Jenny, there's a,they have a song Jenny that.
Yeah, that's where the most played came out.
Great song too. Not quite a story, but also kind
of a story. But oh, to the bouncer.
Good time. Check it out.
Check out Studio Killers. It's a fun.
It's a fun thing I just love. The concept of a virtual band, I

(01:07:45):
think it's, it's so novel and interesting and like, yeah.
And the mystery behind it, it's like Franksy being mystery,
this, the whole Sia thing kind of wild.
But I like this being an actual mystery.
Like there's a a bit of performance art there as well,
so. We've talked about it quite a
bit recently because we've picked a few.
So Don recently picked Carpet Man, which that's not a virtual

(01:08:06):
artist, but there is this like anonymity element.
There's a lot of artists coming out now that wear masks and
don't reveal who their real identity is, like Pale J, Carpet
Man, these these individuals. I think, and I think that was
the speculation with studio killers, like when they first
dropped, it was a big deal trying to figure out who they
were in real life. But I think that was the whole

(01:08:27):
point is they don't want people to know.
They just want to make music without it being them.
It's like an anonymity thing. And then if you can also make it
fun and make it a cartoon and make it a thing, that's probably
adds to it. It's good.
What I don't, what I don't know is why it says they're British,
Finnish, Danish, if nobody actually knows who they really
are or if that's part of the myth hosts.

(01:08:47):
Like if that's you know, what I'm saying is like the fox
keyboard player, a Danish fox and the you know what I mean?
Like, so I don't I don't know. I didn't do that last week.
It's it feels finished Danish and I like it and I respect it.
It does it very. Much does.
Yeah. Yeah.
That's good. It is over to Kate for your

(01:09:09):
final contribution to the next tape.
OK, I. Feel Are you ready?
I'm kind of ready. I feel like this is maybe a cop
out but I'm going to do it. For your last song, I know.
I know, but I have to. All right, let's hear it.
It's it's. The classic It's American Pie by
Don Clay. Well, I know that you're in love

(01:09:32):
with him 'cause I saw you dancing in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes then.
I dig those rhythm and Blues. I was a lonely teenage bronk and
bark with a pink carnation and apickup truck, but I knew I was

(01:09:52):
out. Yeah.
It had to happen now. It had to happen.
Listen, it had to happen becauseof so many reasons, not least of
which is that it's just an iconic song that everybody know.
Everyone thinks they know all the words, which is what I love.

(01:10:13):
It's a lot of words. To know it's a lot of words.
So many. Words.
And I was saying to Donnie when I was, you know, saying which of
his many or your many episodes Iwould like to do was that it's
jumped out to me because my, my dad does not and still doesn't
really believe in the idea of like children consuming
children's media. So he was like against us

(01:10:35):
watching like TV, like kids TV shows and stuff.
And this is what he used to singto us as a lullaby, put us to
sleep. So he doesn't know all the
words. I don't think that I do.
But it's a meaningful song. Do you?
Want to try? We can fill 8 minutes and 36
seconds in the pod with you singing the whole song.
Honestly, I could, I couldn't. I would, but I'll, I'll save

(01:10:58):
you. I also think that's why I'm such
a gifted sleeper. You know 8 minutes of my dad's
dulcet tones every night, That'sgoing to send you right off
call. Yourself a gifted sleeper that
is the. Greatest.
Things I've ever heard. That's a fantastic self
compliment. It should be a it.

(01:11:18):
Should be a title. It should be a way you introduce
yourself. Like hello, I'm I'm listen.
You know what I'm talking about I'm a gifted sleeper.
Like are you 2 gifted sleepers? It doesn't.
I don't know are you I'm I'm the.
Opposite, I very much struggle to sleep on a regular basis and
I'm very envious of you being a gifted sleeper and it makes me
happy for you. Like genuinely happy.
I'm like head on the pillow. Out.

(01:11:40):
I wish that is amazing. It does.
Maybe if if I honestly if if a genie appeared here and I got
any wish, it might be to be a gifted sleeper.
Like can you just make me a gifted sleeper?
My life would be so much better.I feel like if I got good
night's sleep, I can't imagine. The anxiety.
So I wanted to have you. 10:00 at night my time and I wonder
why I don't sleep well but. Donnie, are you a gifted

(01:12:03):
sleeper? You know.
What I am a gifted sleeper. Here's what's Crazy is that like
I'll fall asleep quick? I'm out right away, I'll wake up
in the middle of the night, go to the bathroom, drink water,
back to bed, immediately back asleep.
Exactly. It's paradise, yeah.
What? About like Sleeper?

(01:12:24):
Do you ever worry? About you won't hear somebody
like entering your home or are you sensitive enough that you
think you're going to wake up and sort of fight them off
Here's here's. My here's my assumptions.
I don't think that somebody that's going to enter my home
would do it at random, right? They would have been casing the
place, right? Like, oh, this is the house I
want to rob, which means they probably would have seen me,

(01:12:47):
which means like, I'm going to avoid that one.
He looks. Like a person that I would
probably avoid trying to go intohis house, so I have that going
for me. That's great, because I don't
think that's Yeah, I would have thought they're coming in to
steal me because I'm such a gifted sleeper for science.
Obviously. For science to.
Study you and such a gifted sleeper.

(01:13:09):
It absolutely makes sense, it turns out.
It's Don McClain, that's why. Yeah.
That's great. It had it was the right call.
You know what? You have to, Yeah, because that.
That's a good point. So if Don McClain helps you fall
asleep, do you believe that's a compliment Compliment to him?

(01:13:29):
Same way because like. It's a podcast.
Like there's certain podcasts that help me fall asleep.
I would mean that as a compliment if I told those
podcasters that, but would it always be taken as a compliment
or is it I? Don't think so.
You're you're. Boring.
You put me to sleep, I think because.
This is, I would argue, his opus.
I wouldn't want it. He probably wouldn't want me to
be falling asleep to it, therebymissing some of it.

(01:13:52):
Yeah, I. Agree I.
Think, I guess it depends. It might be situational.
If somebody said that how to make a mixtape really puts them
to sleep, but they meant it in apositive way.
They're like, it's a good thing.Like I can, I know I can put on
fall asleep. I suppose I'd take as a
compliment. You know what, I'm still getting
to listen on my stats. Nobody wants to.
Fall asleep to these voices, Roderick.
No, I'm not. Saying they do.

(01:14:13):
I'm I'm saying if big if I think, I think you.
Guys have got great podcast voices.
When I was listening to some of your episodes, genuinely as a
podcast, you know, consumer Donnie, always thought you had a
lovely speaking voice. But your disappointment on your
face. Thank you, guys.
I mean, the disappointment on your face when I brought up Don
McLean. Now maybe I don't feel that way.

(01:14:34):
Maybe I'll take it back. It's a disappointment, Donnie.
You're not angry, you're disappointed, No.
Neither it was. It was an expected pick, which
is not a bad it was. True, it's not a bad thing.
Give the people what they want. Expected pick.
Yeah, I. Yeah, give the people what they
want. I have a very expected pick for
my last one. It's not my turn, but I'm going
very expected as well. I think I have. 1.

(01:14:58):
I have. Three Son of a bitch.
It's Tenacious D tribute play. The Best Song in the world or
I'll Eat Yourselves. Well, me and.
Kyle We looked at each other andwe each.

(01:15:21):
Set. Okay.
And we played the first thing that came to our heads.
Just so. Happened to.
Be the best. Song in the world.
Oh shit, okay. Great story song.
It had to. Be on here because it's too much

(01:15:41):
murder and mayhem and I think tribute even continues more
violence. But it had to be on here.
There was a time where did we wehad this conversation, I think
in the past, where Tenacious D saved my life.
No. Have we never talked?
About this Rod, No. OK, but if we did, it was too
boring of a story and I didn't remember and it doesn't sound
like it's going to be. It sounds like it.

(01:16:01):
Might be me and three of my friends drove to St.
Louis, MO to play disc golf in caves.
There's a series. Of caves OK we.
Left at about 5:00 in the morning.
It's a little over a six hour drive.
We drove down to St. Louis, MO.
There is a series of caves that was a music venue.
Murder by Death I believe has played there.

(01:16:22):
They hosted a lot of EDM shows. Was this Kentucky?
Or Tennessee. Either St.
Louis, MO. You want me to say that again?
Missouri. And.
Then they had a disc golf coursein there and we played disc golf
like in a dark cave network where the ground was all sand
for the whole day. And then it came time that we
drove home the same day and we got home at about 4:00 in the

(01:16:47):
morning the following day. But all four of us were so tired
that we were literally driving in like maybe hour long
intervals because we couldn't stay awake.
And the only thing that kept us awake was the Tenacious D album,
like self-titled of us with it as loud as it could physically
go, windows down, cold weather. Otherwise we would have died

(01:17:10):
because one of us for sure was going to fall asleep behind the
wheel. I want to.
What a sort of like pedestrian way to die.
I feel like you're going to go out and play glory and not just
in a NBA playing disc. Golfing caves.
But we made it thanks to Tenacious D and it was we all
parked our cars at our one of myfriends houses.
And so I still had to drive homefrom there, which was like

(01:17:33):
another 30 minutes. It was like Tenacious D, the
only thing that's working. So I turned it up and my solo
drive home and just screamed it the whole way home.
This is an incredible. Pick Donnie.
Yeah, I didn't. Die.
Yeah. There's still time, and what
else is? Crazy is like when I start to
give Jesus, when I start to givemy honorable mentions of the

(01:17:54):
songs that I didn't pick in the artist.
The Tenacious D got pushed before.
Before. It's gonna, there'll be
questions, but I'm OK with it. I love it.
I love that I would never in a million Nubias have picked a
Tenacious D song, but it it fitsincredibly well.
It does and. What's what's great on the mix
tape is it's it's, it's humorousbecause it's Tenacious D, but

(01:18:15):
it's also a very different story.
It's like a, it's like a legend.It's like a mysterious legend
type. It's lore.
Kind of a story. It's.
Lore. Yeah.
Great. Great word, yeah.
And it could have been Wonder Boy, but I went with Tenacious D
instead. That's a good karaoke song.
I mean, more terrible depending on who the audience is, yeah.

(01:18:36):
Can I ask? Is what did it keep you awake?
But it might be a combination because you just liked it or
it's because you're. It's a kind of album you can
sing ridiculously at the top of your level.
Stay away. Yeah, it's.
Bold, you're in the. It.
Was hard together us just like screaming at the top of our
lungs again, windows down. It was cold as shit outside.
It was the only thing that literally it was like we would

(01:18:58):
stop on the hour of six hours ofdriving because we couldn't stay
awake for longer than that. It was brutal.
It was too long of a day also. That movie, or any the idea of a
Tenacious D movie, never should have worked as well as it.
Not that I thought it wouldn't work 'cause Jack Black's
obviously great glass and stuff, but Pick up Destiny is so good.

(01:19:20):
It is so funny. It's very.
Good. So good and all.
Those cameos so good do. You know what?
John C Reilly is the Sasquatch, and he is not credited in the
credits. No, no.
Way, Yeah. John C Reilly is the Sasquatch,
but he's not credited. I realized recently that I
thought everybody knew Dave Grohl was Satan or was the devil
in that, and I was talking to somebody who recently had never

(01:19:42):
had no idea. I thought that was just common.
Maybe not. I'm I'm a Dave Grohl fan.
That's probably why. It's probably a me thing.
Big Dave. Bit of a big Dave Grohl fan.
Yeah, they just announced. They just announced that 2 are.
Queens of Stone Age. I think I'm going to have to go.
Oh, that sounds. Great.
Right. Well, this was this was going to
be my lead off pick because I was going to go like right down
the middle first. But then you guys went, we were

(01:20:03):
talking country western. It just felt good.
But this, as soon as Don said we're going to do story songs,
this is like my, this is kind ofmy Don McClain story.
This is my American Pie. This is what I thought of a
story song from growing up. And Don knows I grew up in a Big
Eagles household. And hotel.
California. It's.

(01:20:55):
Such a great classic story and you don't even quite know what
the story is, but it's a story and it's a weird one and it's
trippy and they've even been really vague about what the
story's supposed to be. They keep, they tell different
stories about what the story is to different interviews.
So. But it is a story, and it's one
of those that I could probably sing every word to.
And what's. The thing that's fake is
Coletus, not a thing. There's something so.

(01:21:18):
Coletus is not a real. Word in the story Yeah, yeah,
Coletus is not a real. Word.
So Glenn Frey said that that wastheir nickname for weed to.
Like let. People not know what they were
talking about. They and I think he said where
it came from or maybe not, or maybe it came from a mutual
friend, but he was like, we usedto call weed Kalitas so people
wouldn't know what we were talking about.
I don't know why they cared because I feel like everybody in

(01:21:38):
their sphere was probably smoking.
But yeah, it's it's Kalitas. Kalitas.
But it's got kind of, it gives kind of.
Epic, weird lore vibes, right? And like Glenn Frey has said,
it's, it's based on a book. And then Don Henley has said,
no, it's based on like the the journey you go through and you
move to LA and you kind of lose your soul a little bit and that

(01:21:59):
thing. And then later he said, no.
It's like a metaphor for the American, you know, they're
trying to paint, take you down different roads or whatever.
I wonder if they even know what it actually is about.
But I kind of loved that as a kid.
It was always mysterious. And I'm like, you know, what are
they stabbing with their steely knives?
Like, is that literal? Like, are they actually, is
there murder involved in this? And it's like, no, it's a

(01:22:20):
metaphor and they're eating dinner, but they're it's there's
ghosts in it kind of right. Like great job.
Spirits are those at. Alcohol.
Or is it ghosts? But yeah, you've.
Really spun quite the web I've listened to.
A lot of Eagles, and I've listened to Hotel California
probably a bajillion times. Have you looked?
Into the the actual I guess there's many, but one of the

(01:22:43):
hotel Californians they think it's rumored to be based on in
in Baja California. I've.
Looked at like photos and stuff.I haven't actually researched
the hotels before but now I wantto very much.
You do have. Information.
I don't have information. About the hotel.
But my wife and I, couple years ago, we built out of a van and

(01:23:06):
we drove down to Mexico for manymonths and we stayed in the town
that has the Hotel California init.
And it was just like what we talked about with the people we
were traveling with. Well, it was, it wasn't.
And so many people have a similar story of that being like
a major song in their childhood. It's so bizarre when you really

(01:23:26):
get into it. Yeah, it.
And again, like, you can Google it and there's a lot of
different, you know, you'll readan article that says very
confidently, it's about this thing, and then you'll read
something else. But so was that hotel that
you're talking about, was that the hotel from the actual, like,
album cover? I think so.
Yeah, OK. It's very cool looking hotel I
think. It has something. 2.

(01:23:48):
Billion streams on Spotify. It's massive.
Also one of the coolest guitar solos.
Like I don't get tired of that dueling guitar.
Guitar. Solo, yeah, so cool and so
interesting. And it's got some weird notes
because Joe Walsh is a weird guyand plays weird stuff on the
guitar. So yeah, it looks.
Like the hotels in Palm Springs not involved.

(01:24:11):
OK, good figure. You can still go there.
Go figure. I've never been.
I've never been to Palm Springs, but I could go.
I do we I do have citizenship. Yes, you do.
You're you're illegally allowed to travel, then you want to
swap. You want to swap citizenship
though? I feel like they're in Canada
these days. Literally.
Never. OK, well, fair enough.
I would, I don't mind. You makes sense.

(01:24:32):
Makes. Sense.
Park plays in the. Background of my of my TV right
now. You can have my semi worth as
British possible if you want Roger.
That was a. Strong one, you want to recap
this? List.
Yeah, recap it. OK.
We Got The Chicks. Goodbye, Earl, Cher, Gypsy,

(01:24:54):
Shrimps and Thieves. Mighty Robbins, El Paso, John
Mayer, Walt Grace's Submarine. Skid Row 18 in Life.
Ice Cube. It was a good day.
Kate Bush. Heads were dancing.
Rupert Holmes. Escape Parentheses.
The Pina Colada song Studio Killers.
Ode to the Bouncer. Don McClain.
American Tenacious D tribute andEagles Hotel California I think

(01:25:18):
it's a. Great list I think.
It's a great list. Wow, he.
Does plus I. Learned a lot.
I learned that Kate's a like a professional sleeper, which is
crazy. I A Pina Colada song is actually
called Escape, Yeah. Yes, who knew all the best
songs? I'm really interested.

(01:25:38):
To hear your shoulda woulda coulda list Donny honorable.
Mentions Yeah. Let's get into that.
Let's get in the honorable mentions.
We usually go in the same order.Yeah, we don't.
Oh wait, do we usually go honorable mentions and then the
order? Did we just throw shit off?
Who cares? There's no, there's no rules to
this except the rules I read earlier, yeah.

(01:25:58):
Well, then that's Kate first, OK.
I was gonna go for The Boxer by Simon and Carl.
Oh, it's a good. One, yeah, it's a great.
Song have we? Had no Simon and Garfunkel on
this. We have never had.
Simon Garfunkel on here. That's 2.
That's Kate 2 debut songs we've.Had Paul.

(01:26:20):
Simon solo but. Not Simon and.
Garfunkel. Miss Robinson would have worked
too, right? Yes.
Story. Yeah, I feel like.
We. Got.
More No, I have I. Thought we were going in order.
We're going out. Throw, throw.
All of them. Out.
Yeah, I had. A couple of them, we said.
One of them, obviously Hotel California.

(01:26:41):
I had as a giveaway A throwaway skater boy, Avril Lavigne.
Oh shit. Name.
Name a more compelling story andcountry woman it's fair a.
Yep. Canadian.
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely that.
That would have been a good one.It would have been.
And I think the one that I wanted to bring up, but we did,
we over indexed it to country orwe were at risk of over indexing

(01:27:01):
into country and western was Jolene a classic, a Dolly
classic. And.
In some circles, lesbian anthem The Dolly secretly loved Jolene.
I don't know. You decide.
I never considered that I haven't.
Either, I mean, you know, a couple of systems over here, not

(01:27:22):
yeah. That's OK, you know, you just
gotta you gotta make these considerations, but that's and
then obviously that comes along with that is all the answer
song. You know all the like responses
to Jolene, like cams Diane. Don't know if you're familiar
with that Great song, No. I'm not.
Is this a thing like? Jolene responses.

(01:27:42):
I'm not aware of this. It is a thing that's really
interesting. OK, well now I have to go down
that rapid hole. Absolutely.
The the I would say start with song Diane by the artist Cam
fantastic song and it is supposed to be an answer as if
the other woman as if Jolene is being sung to by a woman called

(01:28:02):
Diane. Yeah, looks like there.
Are Yeah, you're right. Diane by Cam The Girl by
Jennifer Nettles. You can have him.
Jolene by Chapel Heart. Yeah, that's the whole thing.
Wow. I I like that they're it's
probably old, but I it's circulating now because Dolly's
been in the news recently, but the meme, but she's fine.

(01:28:24):
She's fine, she's fine, she's fine, but.
She's fine her. Sister messed up, but the the.
Memes that are like that show Dolly Parton when Jolene came
out and were like who the what the fuck did Jolene look like if
she were afraid of her? Like Jesus Christ, it's like so
cute. Is it me?
Those are my. Three.
Those are my three. Yeah.
Good for it though. Those are great.

(01:28:46):
OK, so let's talk. Let's just say artists that
Tenacious D beat out, OK #1 Bob Dylan Hurricane.
So Tenacious D beat out Bob Dylan the hurricane.
Are you, are you from, are you familiar?
Bob Dylan the hurricane? Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Fantastic Bob Dylan song, awesome fiddle in that, in that

(01:29:09):
Bob Dylan song. Really, really good Bob Dylan
song #2 Jeremy by Pearl Jam. Oh shit.
Yeah, dark also, but great. Dark great story song solo Dave
Matthews. There's a song called
Gravedigger, not Dave Matthews Band, just Dave Matthews.
It tells several small stories about people that have since

(01:29:32):
died that like, tell like their little story and then they die
at the end of each one of his stories.
Really haunting song. Very good scenes from an Italian
restaurant. Billy Joel.
I am on the biggest Billy Joel kick right now after the Billy
Joel documentary that I finishedon the next flight that I was on
recently. And that's it.
That's what I've got. Yeah.
I'm not missing anything. No, that's all of them.

(01:29:56):
But tenacious. But Tenacious D beat all of them
Tenacious. D beat Dylan.
Yeah. Tenacious D.
Roderick, give us your honorablementions, my honorable mentions.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I had four.
Devil went down to Georgia, you know, Smart move.
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, whichhas not been on the pod.

(01:30:18):
Somehow it was on every. List of story songs though like
when you were like if you did any research it was on
everyone's list of like the mostweirdest story songs pretty much
every. Episode we do, that's something
I do as a Google or look up playlist.
I didn't do it this time becauseI kind of just had too many.
No fast car just popped in my head, but I assumed it had been
on the pod to be honest with you.
Or maybe I should have picked that over Hotel California.

(01:30:40):
I'm not sure it's such a good one.
Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega withDNA.
You know. The just the the snapshot of
what's going on in the diner, the whole thing.
That's a good one. And then this is a little
obscure, but I'm a big Digable Planets fan.
Donna, you know them, right? Don, have we talked about?
Them. Yeah, so.
So that on their first album, they have a song called La Femme

(01:31:00):
Fatale and it's a spoken word like poetry style song about a
woman and her boyfriend struggling with a pregnancy and
whether or not to get an abortion.
And it's also gets really political because they live in a
state where they're not technically allowed to.
And so they have to deal with that whole thing.

(01:31:20):
And it's just really well done and well spoken, but a little
heavy. A little heavy.
But I wanted to bring it up because it's a great fucking
like pro-choice, but also realism and like what people go
through and stuff. So very, very good song.
We didn't. Dodge much heavy on this one.
A lot of heavy. Stories out there, A lot of
heavy stories. We're living a bit heavy, Yeah,

(01:31:43):
things. Are heavy.
How to? Make.
Did your first podcast experience, was it below
expectations, met expectations, or exceeded expectations It.
Certainly met my expectations. The only.

(01:32:05):
Thing that would be cooler is ifyou guys had a studio and we
could go into the studio. I know, do you know what I mean?
That would be. Sick.
And then I want to be playing for my shitty Internet.
That's true. Yeah, we got.
Three time zones right now. Roderick's on the East Coast.
I'm central, you're far as east or West WI.
Know, but I think. I would have come to Chicago for
this, Don. I think I would have.

(01:32:26):
Would have made it work. Had some pizza.
Yeah, we're ready. We.
Tried recording person. Once before it went terrible,
but yeah, we didn't know. What we were doing, yeah.
You know now, though, we could try now.
Yeah, we didn't have the right. Appointment.
Yeah. I would love to record and like
getting big enough to have a studio and being able to fly

(01:32:47):
guests out and be in person would be incredible and this
would be so fun in person. I think it would give you like
maybe too much content to edit the Roger people would be more
loose lipped and it would be harder to.
Edit and not like the in person what we did was impossible to
edit, but that was because the audio quality was terrible
because we didn't have the rightequipment.
But what was fun about it is you, and maybe it's not good

(01:33:10):
podcasting, but I edit. I had to do more editing, but we
just laughed a lot. There's just a lot because
you're in person. It's funnier.
Like I'm seeing their reactions and you're feeding off of each
other. We did a lot of laughing, it's
true, on that episode. And listening to people laugh
isn't necessarily always entertaining.
It can be. But we.
Also, while that was happening, we were eating handfuls of candy

(01:33:30):
corn and peanuts. We were eating candy.
Corns and peanut Midwest trail mix.
We did. I forgot it was about a year ago
now. What a great sound.
To have right, just pipe you right into the ears, yeah.
Just some ASMR of peanuts and candy.
Photo I'm going to need a photo, that first handful, Kate of
candy corn and salted peanuts mixed together because I'm

(01:33:52):
telling you, like, I want him toshow up at the office like maybe
in a Mason jar and just be like, all right, everybody dip your
toe, it looks. Like an autumnal bounty, it's
the the yellows and oranges fromthe candy corn and the Browns
from the peanuts all mixed together.
It looks like you go outside, jump in a pile of leaves and go
inside and eat some peanuts and candy corn.

(01:34:12):
Hot apple cider. To go with it, Absolutely.
I took some. Notes during this podcast.
It's the top. It's the top note.
It's the top note. Candy corn and salted peanuts.
Well, Kate. It's been a hell of a time
having you. Thank you so much.
For having me, you guys as like basically and nobody non music
person. This has been an absolute
education. I appreciate it.
Anybody listen everybody? Music person.

(01:34:34):
Yeah, it's every. Man, it was a.
It was a blast and it was an awesome theme.
So thank you for the theme because there's not a there
aren't bad themes, but they're definitely are better than
others. This is a better this is on the
better end. Totally.
And now you. Have another theme to add to the
list? Yeah, mud, mud ballads.
But thank you so much. This was so much fun and great

(01:34:56):
to meet you, Rodrick. I hope you come out West
sometime. You as well.
Absolutely. Thank you so much.
I know it's late for you guys, but this has been an absolute
blast and life like you from We're Happy.
To oblige. And I hope you get a great
night's sleep. I will and you know.
What? I will, and you know I will.
But you, Roger, can't be thinking about it, you know?

(01:35:16):
I'm going to put I'm going to put American Pie on the old
headphones and see if it if I drift off into into slumberland,
I should get my. Dad to record a an acapella
version before you see if that'sthe real the magic trick that'd
be. Lovely.
All right, All right. Thank you.
Bye.
