Speaker 1 (00:00):
If you are crushing
it at work one week and then
crashing the next, it's not amindset issue, it's your
hormones.
In this episode, I'll show youhow aligning your workflow with
your menstrual cycle could bethe game changer that you didn't
know you needed.
Welcome to I'm Hormonal, yoursource of information about
(00:21):
women's hormone health and howto support your body.
Naturally, I'm your host,bridget Walton, and I'm a
certified functional hormonespecialist and menstrual cycle
coach.
I am on a mission to hold thesehormone conversations with as
many menstruators as possible, because you deserve easier
access to accurate informationabout what's up with your unruly
(00:41):
menstrual cycle and with yourfertility mysteries.
Don't you think it's time thatwe figure this out once and for
all?
Hello and welcome to this 104thepisode of I'm Hormonal.
I'm really excited that you arehere listening today.
Of course, I'm your host, bridget Walton, and, as you
(01:02):
heard in the intro, today I'mgoing to be talking through
cycle syncing, but reallyspecific to how this can show up
in the workplace for you.
If you've been listening for awhile, you may be familiar with
the fact that before I startedworking as a hormone coach, I
worked in corporate sales andthat's where really I learned
(01:23):
how to do this, I learned like, okay, I don't feel the same
every week and that's okay, that's not a bad thing, that's
actually a good thing.
And how can I fall into thisnatural cycle, this natural
rhythm to make my work work forme, work in alignment with my
hormones?
So I'm excited to share thatwith you in just a couple of
(01:45):
minutes here.
If you are listening for thefirst time today, then I want to
say a special welcome to you.
On Tuesdays Today is Tuesday.
If you're listening when thiscomes out I do my longer form
episodes and then on Thursdays,I have a little mini snacketizer
size episode that is either arecap of what the Tuesday's
(02:06):
episode is or it's a branch offfrom it.
A lot of you listening, I knowwork in a corporate environment
are on the go, are trying tounderstand how you can support
your hormones and your digestionwhile you're also supporting
your career I should sayprioritizing.
Anyway, you're following me.
So that's why I was like, okay, yeah, it's time that we talk
(02:29):
about how to really cycle syncso that you can perform your
best, so that you can feel likeyou are really in flow with your
work.
Also, so that you can feel inflow with the fun projects and
things that you have outside ofwork, but work takes up a lot of
(02:50):
our lives, so that's why thisis so important.
All of that being said, by theend of this episode, you're
going to understand why cyclesyncing works.
I have a bunch of otherepisodes that go a little deeper
into cycle syncing outside ofjust work if you want to dive
into those, but anyway, we'llcover.
(03:10):
What is cycle syncing.
Why does it work?
I will share with you the guidethat I have Unlocking Peak
Performance, a guide to hormonehealth for women in sales.
If you want to grab that, youcan check out the link in the
show notes now, because part ofthis guide is going to go
through exactly what I'm talkingabout.
It'll help provide you atemplate for a planner that you
(03:32):
can use in order to plan yourschedule if you're a woman in
sales.
I also want to note that, while, yes, this information is
really specifically detailed forwomen in sales, if you're not
in sales, this information isreally specifically detailed for
women in sales.
If you're not in sales, thiswill still be helpful for you,
too.
You still are going to bescheduling meetings, or maybe
meeting with customers, or maybehaving administrative work to
(03:55):
catch up on.
So if you're not in sales, thisis still a good resource for
you.
All right, let's dive in.
I want to talk first about whycycle syncing your work with
your menstrual cycle actuallyworks.
What's happening here and thelong story short is that as you
progress through your menstrualcycle, your estrogen levels are
(04:18):
going to change.
Your progesterone levels aregoing to change too.
You probably already arefamiliar with that.
Women don't have the same upand down, up and down, up and
down every single day.
That's why we can break up themenstrual cycle into four
different phases.
So I'll be walking throughthose four different phases in
just a hot second here.
But suffice it to say thatestrogen.
(04:41):
Actually, let me take a stepback, because if you're really
new here, then you'll want to bereminded that the first day of
your cycle cycle day one that is, the first day of your period,
the first day of your full bleed.
Progressing on from cycle dayone, your estrogen levels are
going to grow because whileyou're menstruating, that's when
most of your menstrual cyclerelated hormones are at their
(05:05):
lowest that they will be allmonth long.
So then estrogen starts to grow.
It hits a peak in the middle ofyour cycle, which is the time
when you ovulate.
After ovulation, estrogenlevels go down and progesterone
comes up and is the predominanthormone in the second half of
your cycle, comes up and is thepredominant hormone in the
(05:26):
second half of your cycle.
So you can already see, maybe, that for the first half of your
cycle we're going to be growingestrogen.
Let's find out what qualities, what personality traits
associate with estrogen and thenin the second half, with
progesterone.
How does that change?
What's going on, what you wantto focus on, what you might
(05:47):
naturally feel inclined to do?
Hopefully that makes sense andsets the scene for where we're
going.
I also want to mention and youhave surely experienced this
before that your energy levelsare bound to fluctuate
throughout your cycle.
So you already know thatprobably in the middle of your
cycle, around the time ofovulation, is when you have the
(06:08):
most energy, whereas when youare on your period or just
before your period, that'sprobably when your energy levels
are the lowest.
That's also going to be thetime when you are more sensitive
to, or rather less sensitive to, insulin, which can further
impact your energy and howyou're feeling.
(06:30):
So that is kind of what's goingon in the background for the
why of why does this work?
What does this mean?
Like, what is influencing whatwe do in each of these phases?
Now that we got that out of theway, let's dive into probably
the juicy part that you'rewaiting for.
So let's start from the startof your cycle, naturally, and
(06:53):
then we'll go on to the lutealphase.
So we'll start with themenstrual phase and, as I
mentioned a moment ago, this iswhen your hormone levels are
really at their lowest of thewhole cycle, specifically
thinking about estrogen andprogesterone.
So this time of your cycle isthe best for reflecting, for
reviewing performance, also forsetting new goals.
(07:16):
Right, this is like your freshstart and you're saying, okay,
where have I been?
Maybe how did things go lastmonth?
If you are a woman who works insales and you want to take a
look back at your calendar fromlast month and you say, okay,
who did I meet with?
How did it go?
What projects do I have comingup?
(07:37):
How can I align my calendar forthis upcoming month, align my
meetings for this upcoming monthwith my priorities for the year
, and just do a big bird's eyeview assessment of where am I at
as it relates to my quota andplan.
So those are a couple ofprompts to ask yourself this
(08:00):
could also be a good time ofyour cycle to make those plans
for the week or two weeks ahead, when you are around your
ovulatory phase.
Spoiler alert that's going tobe the time when you are
probably feeling the best andmost confident.
You're wanting to be out andabout with customers.
You're feeling more social.
We'll get back to the ovulatoryphase in just a minute here, but
(08:22):
, coming back to the menstrualphase, something that I found to
be really helpful was I wouldput a reminder on my calendar
for when my expected first dayof my period would be.
Of course, this maybe isn'twhat you want to do.
If you have a shared calendar, you don't need me to tell you
that but for me that was ahelpful recurring reminder when
I could plan ahead for my futureself and say yo, bridge, you
(08:46):
probably do not want to be onthe road for four days straight
during that week.
Or for you, listener, if that'syour jam, you do you, but it's
all really about planning aheadfor your future self, being able
to anticipate what will yourenergy be like, how will you
feel, what will you want to doand, again, what will align with
(09:08):
those energy levels and whatyou are well naturally inclined
to do.
Sorry, gang, I don't mean tosay the same thing over and over
, but I just really want to.
I was reiterating that to saythis is, of course, one of those
things where you should takewhat works for you and leave the
rest.
There's not a strict, specificformula to follow with it.
(09:29):
Okay, a couple of last noteshere for menstrual phase.
If you are maybe like wrappingup expense reports, if you have
internal systems or sales forceor other forecast sheets to
update, then that's going to bea good time to do it.
When you're getting thingscaught up, you're not having to
be particularly creative,particularly communicative,
(09:52):
that's when you will probably bemost, you know, happy to do
those things, if that'ssomething that, well, you don't
really find yourself loving todo.
Next, let's move on to thefollicular phase.
The follicular phase is thetime between the last day of
your period and probably up totwo days before the ovulatory
(10:16):
phase.
So this could be seven to 10day window, depending on how
long your period is and when youovulate.
You know that reminds me.
I meant to mention this at thetop of the episode.
But all of everything thatrelates to cycle syncing is the
most helpful and most applicablewhen you have a cycle that is
(10:41):
pretty regular.
If you know when you go intoeach phase, that's when you're
able to psychosync, because, remember, psychosyncing does not
actually help to balance yourhormones, to bring anything
really back where it should beif it is out of whack.
Psychosyncing is a tool toreally live in alignment with
(11:05):
what your hormones are doing.
So, that's to say, if you aresomebody who's listening, if you
have unpredictable periods, orfrom one month to the next your
cycles are completely differentlengths keep on listening, keep
this in mind for when you getyour cycle back on track, back
in balance but just right nowyou might not find that this
(11:27):
exactly aligns with yourexperience.
So disclaimer over Coming backto the follicular phase.
This is probably that secondweek of your cycle, the time
between the end of your periodand just before ovulation, and
this is the time.
This is the phase when estrogenlevels are climbing up and this
(11:48):
is going to be the best forcreative problem solving, for
brainstorming.
If you are in sales again, prospecting new clients, that's
what's going to be your jam atthis time.
You're like, ready to get outand about, try new things, start
new projects, meet new people.
So maybe a couple of questionsthat you can ask yourself would
be you know, what are your bestopportunities for growth in that
(12:12):
next cycle, in that menstrualcycle, or maybe you're looking
at the next quarter, however itfalls for you, but what are your
best opportunities for growth?
What can you be ambitious aboutto go get it, go retire that
part of your plan?
Another question you might wantto keep in mind is there a new
part of your portfolio thatyou're ready to dive into and
(12:35):
bring to customers?
This may or may not beapplicable to you, based on what
your company is up to, but ifthere is some part of the
portfolio that you sell thatyou're like okay, this is a new
one.
I haven't gotten my, you know,I haven't dipped my toes in yet
really.
Then again, the follicularphase.
That's going to be a perfecttime to really dip your toes in
(12:57):
and start some new projects.
A couple of other honorablementions here.
New projects A couple of otherhonorable mentions here.
If you are doing the planningfor and conducting of, kickoff
calls, if you're mentoring anyteammates, this could be a good
opportunity for you to connectwith customers with whom you
have not touched base in a while, or again, I can't say it
(13:18):
enough.
Just looking ahead at the restof the year and making that
long-term plan to get to yourquota, that's going to be
feeling in most alignment duringthe follicular phase, moving on
next to the ovulatory phase, and you got that spoiler alert
earlier that this is the bestphase for high energy, high
(13:40):
stakes sales calls too.
If you are able to somehow, youknow, navigate your schedule so
that you can do your pitchesduring this time of your cycle,
that, if you are doing some sortof in-person negotiations or
other dealings, right, thiswould be a really great time to
do that.
Let me speak on that for asecond as a whole right of again
(14:03):
how to apply this in real lifeto your work.
Because if you're somebody who,for example, your job or your
company you have a shorter salescycle, then this might not be
as helpful, but it can help giveyou insight into why you feel a
certain way about certainactivities.
Looking at that from anotherperspective, if you do work in a
(14:27):
sales environment where yoursales cycle is a little bit
longer, right, maybe most ofyour business happens in the
third quarter, maybe it just youknow you have multimillion
dollar projects that aren'tturning over every month.
Then that's where you canreally say, okay, next month, or
hey, we need to do some sitewalks.
(14:48):
Well, okay, I can make my bestguess of when I will be in my
ovulatory phase and suggest adate for that time.
It won't always work out, itwon't always be that way, but
you're just doing what you canto align these meetings, these
pitches, this opportunity thatyou want to close when it will
(15:11):
come naturally to you, when youwill feel just naturally, maybe
be the most skilled at it.
And another note to estrogenwhen we're thinking of the
ovulatory phase, estrogen iswhat is helping us to like get
out and about and just feelreally confident and be with
people and be glowing and begood communicators.
(15:31):
Also, around the time ofovulation, that's when
testosterone levels are thehighest too, and so testosterone
has you feeling also kind ofconfident and just like you are
on it.
So that's why the ovulatoryphase is when you want to.
I mean, don't burn yourself out, don't overdo it, but get out
(15:51):
there, and that's when you'llfeel the most connected.
A couple of questions you mightwant to ask yourself if you are
in this phase, who can I get infront of right now to move the
opportunity?
Wow, well, to move theopportunity forward, but what I
meant to say was to really movethe needle on an opportunity.
Also, how can I connect withmore customers during this phase
(16:12):
?
Can you be more efficient aboutyour travel and more efficient
about your meetings, whateverthat looks like for you?
So I think that I have saideverything I want to.
Actually, no, I have one morething.
So, if you are somebody likeyou're a sales leader, you are a
manager and you are doinginterviews, if you have the
luxury of being able to schedulean interview during this time,
(16:36):
that might best suit you.
Also, if you are doing aninterview yourself and you're
able to schedule it during yourovulatory phase, you might find
that, again, you're moreconfident, you're speaking more
clearly and you're feelingbetter about it.
Last thought here Next time youare negotiating your raise,
you're talking to your managerabout what your expectations are
(16:58):
for your compensation.
Girl, schedule that for yourovulatory phase.
That, hopefully, is one thatyou do have a little bit more,
you know, ability to put thatmeeting on your manager's
calendar.
And so, yes, one, negotiateyour raise.
Two, negotiate your raise.
Three, negotiate your raise.
And four, make sure that you'redoing that during your
(17:20):
ovulatory phase when it makessense.
Make sure that you're doingthat during your ovulatory phase
when it makes sense.
Fourth and finally, we're goingto move into the luteal phase.
So this is the last 10 to 14days of your period.
So, after you ovulate, beforeyour next period begins, this is
when progesterone levels arecoming up real high and then
(17:40):
tapering off and that's whenyour period begins.
Once those levels go all theway back down, this is going to
be the period that is the bestfor follow-ups, best for
completing those back-end tasks.
Again, kind of thinking of likestrategic planning what is there
for the long-term that you wantto be considering?
(18:01):
Ideally, you can avoid highpressure negotiations during
this time, because sometimesperhaps you've noticed in
yourself or others that you'relikely to say things that you
didn't really want to say.
So little asterisk, maybe.
Try to avoid that if you can.
But ultimately, questions youcan ask yourself hey, what admin
(18:30):
tasks can I prioritize?
What proposals or whatwrite-ups, what budgetaries need
to be revised or edited?
Because during this phase, during the luteal phase, that
revision and editing, that'swhen that's a little bit of your
superpower and then, yeah, justkind of like wrapping things up
.
Right, it feels good to wrapthings up before your period
begins.
Put a little bow on it and justyou can start over, start anew
(18:52):
and fresh with your new cycle.
I'll close out this conversationby running through a couple of
things that you can start doingright now to apply this and make
it make sense for you to reallyhelp support your performance
at work.
Because, again, sometimes we'relike how do I improve my
performance, how can I do better, how can I just enjoy my work
(19:15):
more?
And sometimes there are thosetasks of okay, let me have fewer
meetings or more meetings, orgo to the office in person,
whatever that looks like for you.
But also there is this hugetopic of what are your hormones
doing?
Right, or huge for me?
Right, hopefully huge for youif you're listening to this
(19:35):
podcast, because your hormonesare changing all the time and we
, a lot of the time we think ofthat as being a bad thing, right
, but that's in part why I'venamed this podcast.
I'm hormonal, because we're allhormonal.
That's not a bad thing, that'sa good thing.
You can use it to your advantage.
You can use it to bettersupport your goals in whatever
(19:58):
area of life they might be,whether that is your career or
otherwise.
So first, what I want you to dois go ahead and put a reminder
on your calendar, a recurringcalendar invite that shows when
you expect the first day of yourperiod to arrive.
When you expect the first dayof your period to arrive, put
(20:21):
another one on there for whenyou expect to ovulate.
That way you can you guessed it, you know what I'm about to say
.
That way, as you are puttingtravel on the calendar, as
you're scheduling trips andcustomer meetings, you can do
your best to predict what yourmood is going to be, what you're
going to want to do and notwant to do.
So, putting those recurringevents on your calendar, do it.
(20:43):
The next thing I want you to dois go to the link in the show
notes and grab the guide thatI've made just for you, just for
women in sales, called theUnlock Peak Performance a guide
to hormone Health for Women inSales.
These are my best tidbits forreally what I wish that I knew
when I first started out insales, so that not only can you
(21:06):
have a better understanding ofwhat we've talked about today,
but you will also get my energystabilization formula to help
you understand what to pack, howto support your energy levels
throughout the day, how you canuse caffeine wisely.
You will get a three-minute guthealth check-in and hormone
check-in.
That will just pose a couple ofquestions for reflection on how
(21:30):
you can support your health andmake sure that you are you
guessed it feeling your best.
So if that sounds like that isin alignment with you, go to the
link in the show notes to grabthat guide.
I would love to hear yourfeedback on it.
You guys can always connectwith me on Instagram.
I'm at Bridget Walton, or thelink is in the show notes.
(21:50):
I mean, this was really helpfulfor me working in sales, being
on the go all the time.
I hope that this is also reallyhelpful for you.
Let me know what you think andcome back on Thursday for just a
little mini recap episodebecause, hey, we're all adults,
