Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hey there and welcome
back.
You're listening to ImperfectMarketing right now.
I'm your host, kendra Korman, and I am here with my new
monthly Imperfect Marketingbrief.
In January of 2025, I decidedto take my podcast down to once
a week from twice a week toreally free up and open up some
(00:22):
time for me to do moreexperimentation, get things done
overall just get more sleep.
I'm just kidding about that.
But ultimately, yes, I neededmore thinking time and ways to
get things done.
My opinion, thinking time isway undervalued.
So enough about that.
(00:43):
Let's jump into the heart oftoday's topic on AI.
Today, we're talking aboutsomething that I get asked
probably the most often askedquestion for any of my trainings
or presentations, etc.
Right Is, what tool do I chooseand do I use ChatGPT or Claude
(01:04):
or Perplexity, storybrandai,flux, midjourney, beautifulai?
There's a million differenttools out there and it really
depends on what you are tryingto do and what you are trying to
have it do on a regular basis, and so, again, I talk a lot
about a lot of different tools.
Today, we're going to focusmostly on ChatGPT, claude and
(01:26):
Perplexity, which I considerreally that baseline of all of
the major tools that you'regoing to be using.
Again, there's a milliondifferent software tools and you
don't have to be paying for allof them.
Most of them have been built onClaude or ChatGPT for the most
part, and so if you just neededto do that little thing for you,
you can usually get awaywithout paying for it and
figuring out how to make chat, gpt or cloud work for you.
(01:49):
In that way, now, one canusually meet your needs for
paying.
You don't have to pay for 8million systems like I do.
My software budget cringesevery time I see a new AI tool
out there, but everybody'susually looking for the best
tool.
It's the best one, kendra.
Right, there isn't a best one,right?
It just depends on which one isbest for you and what you are
(02:12):
trying to accomplish with the AIsystem.
So I was talking to a clientlast week who was just totally
overwhelmed by all of theoptions, and she was jumping
from tool to tool to tool andshe's like which one's gonna be
best for me?
Yes, I encourage you to checkthem all out because they're all
different, but you don't haveto be jumping from tool to tool
to tool and she wanted to figureout which one was better.
But that's the wrong questionwhat are you trying to
(02:36):
accomplish?
And we're going to stick withthat and think about how you're
doing it.
So the most important questionhere is what tasks do you do
repeatedly in your work or inyour daily life?
I want you to think a littlebit here about your typical week
.
Are you writing a lot of emails?
Are you creating social mediacontent?
(02:56):
Are you researching industrytrends?
Are you summarizing somebody'swebsite, summarizing documents?
What is it that you're doing ona regular basis?
Because if you start with yourneeds and not the tool, that's
what's going to make thedifference here.
It's like choosing a car.
You're not going to start withhorsepower and end up with a
(03:19):
sports car when your ultimategoal is to take kids to soccer
practice, right, so it sort ofnarrows things down just a
little bit differently.
So what I want you to do rightnow, even if you're driving,
just think don't write it downif you're driving or walking the
dog, what's one task that youdo over and over and over that
takes up more time than you'dlike, that you think AI might be
(03:41):
able to help you with?
I'm not talking aboutautomation or anything like that
.
What is that one task, that onething that you do Personally.
For me it's writing.
I write probably four to sixhours a day on average, four to
six hours Over.
Half of my day is just writing.
Right, responding to emails, writing social posts, writing
show notes for this podcastposts, writing show notes for
(04:08):
this podcast, emails to clients, presentations, marketing plans.
It's all writing.
That's all I do so with AIassisting me, okay, with the
drafts.
Notice my keyword.
There is assisting, notcreating, because I believe in
AI-assisted content, notAI-created content.
But with AI assisting me withthe first drafts, I'm saving
about two to three hours a dayjust on most of my writing.
(04:29):
That's half the time.
50% less time is being spent onwriting those drafts, and then
I spend the rest of the timejust on editing and prompting.
Now, it didn't become free time, unfortunately, because that
would be crazy.
He actually used it to get morethings done in less time.
So let's jump in.
So you know what you want to do, right?
(04:50):
You know what thing you spendmost of your time on that you'd
really like to streamline Again, whether it's research or
writing, or summarizing orbrainstorming questions,
whatever that happens to be.
That's going to help you pickthe tool that you need.
I do feel like we have to startwith ChatGPT.
It's the Swiss army knife inthe AI world.
It can handle a lot ofdifferent tasks.
(05:12):
You've probably heard about iteverywhere and there's good
reason for that, right.
What I love about ChatGPT it'sincredibly versatile.
Need to make a simple image itwill, with DALI built in.
Need to go out and summarize awebsite it can go out and view
that website.
Needed to analyze data you canupload that into the system.
Make sure there's no personallyidentified and identifiable
(05:35):
information PII or confidentialinformation, of course needed to
write.
It can do a lot of these things.
It can create code.
There's a million and onethings that ChatGPT can do,
which makes it one of the mostversatile tools and, depending
on what you're trying to do,it's usually the one that I
recommend for most people.
It's great.
(05:56):
If you need an all-aroundassistant, right, I use it.
If I'm making sure apresentation conveys what I'm
trying to do, like, hey, whatare the three takeaways you get
out of this presentation andupload the slides?
If it's not getting what Iwanted it to get, then I
probably need to do some editing.
And if I need it to review awebsite or to summarize
information or a flyer for meall that type of stuff and more.
(06:19):
Now let's switch gears and talkabout perplexity.
If chat GPT is a Swiss armyknife, perplexity is like having
a research assistant in yourpocket and it is amazing.
It searches the internet inreal time and gives you current,
accurate information withsources.
Let me say that again, withsources, it's got little
(06:41):
footnote bubble numbers thatwill take you to that original
source where it got theinformation, so you can make
sure that it's not hallucinatingor making anything up along the
way.
So I want you to think aboutresearching a topic.
Maybe you're looking on currentindustry trends for your
industry.
So instead of opening 20browser tabs right and reading
(07:03):
through reports and signing upfor a million different reports
and trying to piece theinformation together, perplexity
is going to do that heavylifting for you and allow you to
dive deeper where you want toand clarify your questions,
which is pretty cool.
I recently used it to researchsome marketing trends.
Instead of spending hoursreading different articles from
(07:23):
top to bottom, it gave me anoverview in minutes.
I love using it for how to'sLike I forgot how to do
something in Premiere Pro and Isaid how do I change the volume
on this and it's like here arethe four ways that you can
change volume, step-by-stepinstructions.
So I didn't have to watch anyYouTube videos, I didn't have to
jump in and start readingthings to find the step that I
(07:43):
needed summarized, exactly whereI needed to go and what I
needed to do, and I had somelevel of familiarity with the
activity.
I'd just forgotten how to do itbecause I hadn't done it in a
while.
I regularly use it forresearching my podcast guests
too.
It's a pretty amazing tooloverall.
So now let's move on to Claude, though.
(08:04):
If you need to write and I meanreally write and hold your
voice over and over and overagain, consistently through
longer chat, things like thatClod is by far the best tool, in
my opinion.
It excels at taking yourcontent, putting it into
(08:24):
well-structured piece thatactually sounds like you wrote
it.
That's what's key there.
Actually sounds like you wroteit.
That's what's key there.
It's not just stringing wordstogether, no-transcript, it
(08:46):
makes sense, it flows.
Still needs some editing, don'tget me wrong, but again,
consistent, great content overand over again.
So how do you choose?
I want you to start by askingyourself these questions what's
taking up most of your timeright now.
Do you need current research?
Are you working withinformation that you already
(09:09):
have and can upload?
Are you creating content, information that you already
have and can upload?
Are you creating content,analyzing information?
Sometimes you could usedifferent tools for different
parts of your process.
I definitely use all three.
I could use perplexity toresearch trending topics,
organize my thoughts with chatGPT and then use Claude to write
(09:30):
the final piece, and that's howdetailed I go.
But if you're looking for onetool, one tool to pay for and
leverage, I'm going to ask youwhat are you trying to do?
If you want the most, the onethat does the most amount of
things, then you got to go chatGPT.
If you don't care and you wantto have sources for everything
(09:50):
you do, perplexity is where it'sat.
And then, finally, if all youwant is something that can
reliably write your first drafts, then I would say cloudai is by
far the best option.
There, again, we can get intothe technicalities of all the
different systems, butultimately, it's what do you
(10:11):
want to achieve with what you'redoing?
Play around with the freeversions.
Again, not one is going to bebest overall.
It's just going to be what'sbest for you and what you're
trying to do.
And just remember if you likethe outputs you're getting on a
free plan, you're going to lovethe outputs you're getting on a
paid plan, because when you goup onto the paid plans, the
(10:32):
outputs seem to be just a littlebit better.
On all three of them you getwhat you pay for, right.
So just remember, there's noperfect AI tool.
It's about finding the righttool for your needs.
I want you to start small.
Pick one task that you do overand over, and over, again and
again.
Experiment, see which one feelsbest.
(10:53):
That's it for today's episodeof Imperfect Marketing.
