Pastor Lephen Kumar (00:05):
Hello
everyone.
It gives me such a joy to bringGod's word to you, and I have a
message that God has laid in myheart to share with each and
every one of you.
This devotion is taken fromGospel according to Matthew 11"
(00:36):
28 to 30.
Come to me all you who areweary and burdened, and I will
give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learnfrom me, for I am gentle and
(01:03):
humble in heart, and you willfind rest for your souls, for my
yoke is easy and my burden islight.
Let's pray, Father God, we wantto thank you for your word.
Your word is so comforting.
(01:26):
We want to thank you because wecan find so much of peace and
comfort in your word.
Lord, I pray that you wouldtalk to us, touch our souls and
touch our spirits.
In Jesus' name, we ask thisprayer, Amen.
(01:48):
Well, this is a message.
This is a message that Jesus istalking to probably a large
multitude of people who aregoing through a very tough time.
(02:08):
And in fact, if you will readthe preceding passage, Jesus has
some very strong words ofjudgment upon few towns of
Galilee, and then also, he isbeing confronted by the
(02:33):
Pharisees in relation to theobservation of Sabbath.
So this particular part of thepassage, that is, Matthew 11:
28- 30, is kind of sandwichedbetween something which is very
stressful and something that isvery strong.
(02:56):
And in midst of all theseconflicts, Jesus is offering
something that is very precious, that is, rest.
And this morning the devotionis titled as come and rest.
(03:23):
Come and rest.
So it's there are few veryfundamental things as far as
rest is concerned.
The first thing is that everyone of us we long for rest, that
(03:46):
state of mind or that state ofbeing where we just want not to
be bothered by anything.
You know the worries of thisworld.
There are so many thingshappening to us in relation to
(04:06):
our health, relation to ourcareer, situations in workplaces
, things in relation to ourmarriages, our finances, things
within family, village, community, nation at large.
There are so many thingshappening around us that might
bother us, but every one of uswe need rest.
(04:31):
We need rest because there areso many things that bother us,
and so it's fundamental that allof us we need rest.
And the second thing is, restcan be situational or rest could
be a lifestyle need.
Some of us, we might be goingthrough a certain patch in our
(04:53):
life, um, a season in our lifewhere we need, uh, rest.
You know just an examplesomething happened to our child,
you know, child got sick andyou know.
Or there are health situationsthat are kind of bothering us,
you know so, so that we we arein a situation where we need
(05:14):
rest.
So it could be situational, butfor some people it could be
even lifestyle issue.
You, we kind of get stressedwith anything, everything that
has kind of become so deep andinnate for us that we get
(05:36):
anxious for almost everything inour lives.
So we need rest from you know.
You know the lifestyle stress.
It's not just situational butit's lifestyle stress.
So rest can be situational, thatwe are looking for some rest,
(05:56):
some peace, which is situational.
And then there are some whomight be seeking rest as a
lifestyle need, and the thirdthing is that there are.
That rest simply means to be atpeace with your own self, be at
(06:19):
peace with others, be at peacewith others and be at peace with
God, and when that happens thatis called rest.
You are at peace with yourself, who you are and how God has
created you and you are at peacewith what's happening to others
(06:43):
and what's happening to yourrelationship with others, and
also you are at peace with Godin relation to how God is
functioning.
God is superior being and wecannot control himed.
(07:05):
We are not in conflict.
That's the state of rest thatGod is, that Jesus is inviting
us this today.
What is it that that'sbothering you today?
What is it that you're so muchstressful about from the passage
(07:27):
that we have read?
I'm just going to quickly bringfive things which can help us
to find rest in Jesus, becausehe is the one who is inviting us
to this rest.
The first thing is we will findrest when we go to Jesus and be
(07:48):
with Him.
When you read Matthew 11 (07:49):
28,
he says come to me all you who
are weary and burdened.
I will be, give you rest.
Underline that phrase Come tome, come to me.
So there's an invitation.
(08:09):
We will find rest when we takethat step of going to him
Because it's an invitation.
We are asked to come to him.
When you read Mark 3 (08:22):
13- 14, it
says Jesus went up on a
mountainside, called to himthose he wanted and they came to
him.
He appointed 12, that theymight be with him, that he might
send them out to preach, thatthey might be with him.
(08:43):
He is calling us for afellowship with him.
We will find rest with him whenwe go to him.
When we go to him, God wants tospend time with us.
And when storms hit us orsituations in life that kind of
(09:09):
bothers us.
Most often, you know, we aredistracted.
We are distracted.
We just want to go after theworld, we want to go after the
things that bother us.
And this moment of the time Godis just inviting us to find
(09:31):
rest in him, to be still andjust to know him that he's in
control.
And he just wants us to havethat fellowship, just to be with
him, just to remain with him,so that we can enjoy his
presence.
Psalm 91" 1, says whoever dwellsin the shelter of the most high
(09:57):
will rest, will rest.
Underline that whoever dwellsin the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of theAlmighty, I will say of the Lord
.
He's my refuge and my fortress,my God, in whom I trust.
And then, in Psalm 27, verse 4,David's Psalm, one thing I
(10:25):
asked of the Lord.
This is what I desire to dwellin the house of the Lord all the
days of my life to gaze on thebeauty of the Lord and seek him
in his temple.
So that's longing to have thatfellowship with God, that desire
, that strong urge to spend timewith him.
(10:47):
When he's openly inviting, he'ssaying come to me, he's giving
that invitation.
Why don't we go to him and bewith him so that we can enjoy
his company, enjoy thisfellowship?
The second thing is, which isvery important, rest is a fruit,
an outcome of our relationshipwith God.
(11:09):
So we get peace, we get rest.
Our stress and anxiety comesdown, goes down as a fruit, as
an outcome of our relationshipwith God.
Going back to that samescripture, Matthew 11: 28.
(11:31):
Come to me all who are wearyand burdened and I will give you
rest.
Underline that phrase and Iwill give you rest.
He will give.
It's consequential, it's anoutcome of come to me.
(11:55):
I hope you're understanding.
When we go to him, the fruit isthat he gives us rest.
It's just like we are in astorm, we are in a war and we
want to be there.
It's not possible to have restthere.
(12:18):
We have to come out of that andbe in the presence of God.
Because he loves us and hewants to have our company.
He wants to have our company.
So rest and the peace we gainas an outcome of our
(12:38):
relationship with him, the timethat we spend with him.
Romans 5" 1 to 5, says this isPaul writing Romans 5, 1 to 5.
Therefore, since we have beenjustified by faith, we have
(13:03):
peace with God through our LordJesus Christ.
Through Him, we have alsoobtained access by faith into
the grace in which we stand andwe rejoice in hope of the glory
of God.
More than that, we rejoice inour sufferings, knowing that
suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character
, character, produces hope.
Hope does not put us to shamebecause God's love has been
(13:28):
poured into our hearts throughthe Holy Spirit who has been
given to us.
So because of that relationship, because we have that peace
with God, because we relate withhim, because of that
relationship, so much of God'slove is poured into us and more
(13:53):
of God's love gives us that restand peace.
And the third thing we will findrest when we have God's way as
our way.
We will find rest when we haveGod's way as our way.
(14:13):
Going back to that samescripture, Matthew 11: 29- 30
take my yoke upon you.
Underline that phrase.
Take my yoke upon you and learnfrom me, for I'm gentle and
humble in heart, and you willfind rest for your souls, for my
(14:39):
yoke is easy and my burden islight.
Underline that, for my yoke iseasy and my burden is light.
We will find rest when we haveGod's way as our way.
So this is very interesting andI told you that example.
You know that if you are in awar zone, it's very hard to find
(15:02):
rest there, because what we areleaning on are things that
kindle the storm, kindle the war, kindle the battle.
That kind of triggers morebattle.
We have to come out of that warzone and be at a place where we
(15:25):
can fellowship with God, wherewe can spend a meaningful time
with him.
It's not easy, it's difficult, but that's what God wants us to.
God wants to see that happen inour life.
(15:45):
One of the best example is theexample of the prodigal son,
which is recorded in Luke 15:
17- 20. (15:50):
undefined
I'm going to read this for you.
When he came to his senses hesaid how many of my father's
hired servants have foot tospirit, and here I am starving
(16:10):
to death.
I will set out and go back tomy father and say to him father,
I have sinned against heavenand against you.
I'm no longer worthy to becalled your son.
Make me like one of your hiredservants.
So he got up and went to hisfather.
But while he was still a longway off, his father saw him and
(16:34):
was filled with compassion forhim.
He ran to his son, threw hisarms around him and kissed him.
Do you see this?
He, when prodigal son, came tohis senses.
What is he realizing?
He's realizing that I need toleave this place and be with my
(17:01):
father.
Even if my father would treatme as a servant, I would rather
prefer to be with my father.
Isn't that amazing?
Isn't that amazing that when weare in relationship with God,
(17:33):
we are in relationship with God,though God's ways are not that
easy.
We cannot probably agree withHim all the time, but even in
that disagreement with God, whenwe trust Him as a creator, God
as God who is sovereign, who canmake a difference in our lives,
(17:53):
and we make his way as our way, rather than asking him to
follow us, if we follow him, Ithink we will find rest.
We'll find rest Because we donot desire to be in conflict.
(18:19):
And the fourth thing is we willfind rest by learning from
Jesus.
We will find rest by learningfrom Jesus.
Matthew 11" 29 take my yokeupon you and learn from me.
(18:41):
Underline that phrase Learnfrom me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you willfind rest.
Learning learning is amazing.
The more we learn, there aredifferent ways we can learn.
We can learn by reading theWord of God.
(19:03):
We can learn by listening toothers, experiences not just.
Sometimes we just think thatour experiences only matter.
Yes, yes, that matters a but wecan learn a lot from the
experiences of other people, what they go through, how they
(19:27):
deal with situations, when theygo through difficult times in
our lives.
And here he's saying learn fromme, learn from me.
Saying learn from me, learnfrom me.
We can learn a lot from thelife and teachings of Jesus as
(19:48):
recorded in the scripture.
Luke 10 (19:49):
38- 41, says it's from
the story of Mary and Martha.
38- 41.
As Jesus and his disciples wereon their way, he came to a
village where a woman namedMartha opened her home to him.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet
(20:11):
listening to what he said, butMartha was distracted by all the
preparations that had to bemade.
She came to him and asked Lord, don't you care that my sister
has left me to do the work bymyself?
Tell her to help me, Martha.
Martha, the Lord answeredyou're worried and upset about
(20:35):
many things, but few things areneeded, and upset about many
things, but few things areneeded, or indeed only one.
Mary has chosen what is betterand it will not be taken away
from her.
Mary has chosen what is better.
She has chosen to learn.
(20:57):
Learn from Jesus, learn fromJesus, learn from Jesus.
And I think learning shouldnever cease.
Learning should never come toan end.
Can you take your situation, from what you are going through
(21:17):
today, and take it to the Lordand ask him Lord, teach me your
way, Lord, teach me, Lord, teachme, Lord, teach me.
I want to learn, I want tolearn from you, Lord, and the
more we learn we will find thatpain, that struggle, that
(21:41):
difficulty that bothered us somuch has actually, because of
the learning has given us somuch of rest, has given us so
much of rest, and we all needrest.
We all need rest.
The fifth and the final thingis we will find rest when we
know and accept the nature ofGod.
(22:02):
We will find rest when we knowand accept the nature of God.
Going back to the samescripture, Matthew 11" 29.
Take my yoke upon you and learnfrom me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart.
Underline this phrase, for I amgentle and humble in heart and
(22:30):
you will find rest.
And you will find rest.
One of the challenges that manyof us we go through is having
that picture of God that he'scruel, he's judgmental and he's
out there to kill us.
He's out there to give ustrouble.
I think many of us we need tocome out of that understanding
(22:55):
of God.
He's a loving God, butunderstanding of God he's a
loving God.
If we, as parents, dad and mom,we are deeply hurt when our
children are hurt, don't youthink that creator God is more
hurt when we go throughdifficulties and pain and
(23:22):
struggle?
That's what Jesus is sayingabout himself, for I am gentle
and humble in heart.
Psalm 34 (23:29):
8, says taste and see
that the Lord is good.
Blessed is the man who takesrefuge in him.
Blessed is the man who takesrefuge in him.
Blessed is the man who takesrefuge in him.
It's very, very important toknow God, to know that he's a
loving father, to know that hecares for us, to know that he
(23:58):
loves us, he cares for us, toknow that he loves us, he cares
for us, to know that he is withme.
Emmanuel, God with us, he iswith us, he is with us.
Yes, all of us, we need rest, every one of us.
We need rest, and Jesus isinviting us to him that we spend
(24:26):
time with him and find thatrest.
We will find rest when we go toJesus and remain with him,
fellowship with him.
We will find rest as an outcome, as a fruit of our relationship
(24:48):
with God.
We will find rest when we haveGod's way as our way.
Some of us, we need to makethat choice, that decision,
completely surrendering our ownselves to God, and say that, God
, I just want to rely on yourway and just to trust in him
(25:14):
that he has good plans for us.
We will find rest by learningfrom Jesus, and we can learn
through the word of God, throughthe experiences of people,
through spending time readingthe word and praying.
We will find rest when we knowand accept the nature of God,
(25:38):
that God is a loving God.
He cares for us.
Let's pray, Father God, we wantto thank you so much for your
grace upon our lives.
We want to thank you becauseyou're loving, you're caring,
you're loving, you're caring.
Lord, I pray if there is anylistener today who is
(26:03):
disappointed, discouraged,disheartened, going through so
much anxiety and stress.
Lord, I ask for your comfortingpeace.
Lord, I ask for your strength.
Lord, I ask you that you wouldhold their hand and lead them.
(26:23):
I pray, Lord, that you comfortthem.
Lord, help us that we will growin your love, grow in knowing
you more and more.
Be with every one of us.
(26:44):
In Jesus name, we ask thisprayer Amen, Amen.
May God bless all.
