(00:00):
Well, hello and welcome back.
My name is MaryAnn Walker andI'm the life coach for the
helpers, the healers, and thepeople pleasers.
And today we're going to betalking about affirmations.
You probably heard the advicebefore"just keep saying your
affirmations every day, and thensuddenly your whole life will
change." Now, that's true andnot true both at the same time.
So if this hasn't been true foryou, keep listening because
(00:21):
today's episode is just for you.
The truth is the affirmations.
They're not just magic wordsthat you can chant like a spell,
and then suddenly all of yourproblems just disappear.
Right?
They're not just a list ofwishes that you just put on
repeat, hoping that the universeis eventually going to deliver,
but instead, affirmations aredeclarations of a conscious
(00:41):
choice.
They're reminders of who you arebecoming, as well as an
invitation to just alignyourself with the vibration of
what it is that you want tocreate.
And here is why affirmationsonly work if you are actually
aligning your thoughts, youractions, and your energy with
them.
So today we're gonna break thisdown into three parts.
(01:01):
First, why your affirmationsmight not be working for you.
Number two, how your brain couldactually be sabotaging you.
And number three, how to reframeyour affirmations so they'll
actually stick and support theversion of you that you really
want to step fully into.
So first of all.
Why are your affirmations notworking?
To address this, we're firstgoing to talk about the brain.
(01:22):
Your brain is a fact checker.
It is a built-in lie detectortest.
So anytime that you tellyourself something that's a
little bit too far away fromyour current reality, your brain
is gonna call you out.
It's gonna say, wait a second, that's not true.
So for example, if you keepusing the affirmation, I am slim
and healthy, but you're carryingaround a lot of extra weight.
You just got your labs back andthey're not looking too good
(01:43):
right now.
Maybe you're eating takeout andhaving a soda right now, eating
all of the fries and theleftover fries from the kiddos,
your brain is gonna beresponding to that affirmation
of, I am slim and healthy with,"um, Nope, you're not.
Sorry.
Nice try." Or let's say thatyou're currently drowning in
debt and you're using theaffirmation, money flows easily
to me.
But there's actually more moneygoing out than coming in, then
(02:06):
again, your brain is going to besaying,"Nope, liar, liar, pants
on fire.
That is not true." And thetricky part is that every time
your brain rejects youraffirmation, it actually
strengthens the belief that theopposite is true.
And that's when you end upfeeling less and less aligned
with the life that is that youreally want.
Alright, so now let's talk aboutthe difference between
(02:27):
affirmations and aspirations, because many people really
confuse the two.
So an affirmation is what youare affirming to be true.
This is where you're going to beexperiencing the growth.
And oftentimes what we'reactually saying is aspirations.
It's where it is we want toeventually end up, but we're not
actually there yet, and we knowdeep down we're not there.
(02:47):
So when we're repeating theseaspirations saying, yeah, I know
this isn't where I am yet, but Iwant to be, your brain is going
to keep reassuring you that"you're right.
You're not there yet." And it'sactually gonna be sabotaging
you, making it harder and harderfor you to get to where it is
that you want to go.
Whereas affirmations, they are, your current reality is things
that you can actually affirm tobe true.
(03:10):
So again, to play around withthe affirmation, I am slim and
healthy.
If you're actually not fit orhealthy, then this is going to
be more of an aspiration foryou, and your brain is gonna
push back on that and say,"Nope, you're always going to be in the
wanting, sorry about it.
I'm gonna show you all theevidence that, oh yeah, you
might as well just go and sneaka few more fries from the other
person's plate, right?" It'sgonna give you more and more
evidence that you're not thereyet.
(03:31):
Whereas if you can just tweak ita little bit, which is what
we're going to be talking aboutnext, then we can actually give
our brain an assignment.
For example, something that youmight be able to actually affirm
to be true is I am doing thingseach and every day to improve my
health and wellness.
Now that is going to besomething that you can actually
affirm to be true.
And the really cool thing aboutthis affirmation is that you're
(03:52):
going to be essentially givingyour brain an assignment.
Since this is an affirmationthat is affirming your current
reality, it is going tocompletely change how it is that
you're showing up in life.
Okay?
So if your affirmation is.
"I'm doing things each and everyday to improve my health and
wellness." Then just notice, first of all, let's compare the
two.
Okay?
So first kind of sit with theaffirmation of I am slim and
(04:13):
healthy.
See how that feels in you.
Does that feel open to you ordoes that feel closed to you?
Okay, just notice it.
And now try the affirmation.
I am doing things each and everyday to improve my health and
wellness.
How does that feel for you?
For me, that one feels moreopen.
It feels possible to me becauseI can do things in my current
(04:35):
reality to give my brainevidence that yes, that is true.
I am doing things each and everyday to improve my health and
wellness.
And then your brain is gonna belooking for ways that you can do
exactly that.
So it might be like,"oh.
Yeah.
Hey, I can fit in a walk today.
That'd be great.
I am doing things every day toimprove my health and wellness."
"Oh, hey.
Usually I go and eat the granolabars and the chips, but today
(04:56):
I'm gonna have an apple for mysnack.
Look at me.
I am doing things each and everyday to improve my health and
wellness." So kind of notice thedifference in those, that one of
those thoughts is going to kindof create some resistance for
you.
Whereas the other one is goingto help you to get into
alignment with the vision of youthat you want to become.
It's going to help to build thatmomentum so you can actually
(05:17):
achieve your goal.
So let's kind of play aroundwith another one.
If I'm saying I am a concertpianist, but I barely touch the
piano, my brain is going to rollits eyes at me and say, yeah,
right.
You're not a concert pianist.
You hardly even play, right.
I'm going to be experiencing alot of resistance there.
But if I shift it just a tinybit and say, I am finding time
(05:39):
each and every day to practicethe piano, suddenly my brain is
now getting to work.
It is going to start looking forthat evidence that yes, I am
finding time each and every dayto practice the piano.
So then my brain might say, oh,hey, guess what?
You have five more minutes whilethe kids are finding their shoes
to practice the piano.
Or might say, Hey, how about ifinstead of watching TV tonight,
(05:59):
if you practice the piano?
Your brain is going to start tolook for evidence that, yes, I
am in fact finding time each andevery day, and I can do that
right now to practice the piano.
So when your affirmation startsto feel believable to you, then
your brain starts to become yourally rather than your adversary.
Okay, so how do we make theseaffirmations work for us?
(06:22):
You gotta keep giving your brainevidence.
So I already told you about howto tweak the affirmation a
little bit, but we're going todive a little bit deeper because
really the goal is to become avibrational match for what it is
that you're wanting to create.
That's gonna help to lower thatresistance.
Because then you're going tostart believing that it is true.
It's going to become a trueaffirmation for you rather than
(06:43):
something that you want toaspire to someday, but you just
never can quite.
Get there.
Okay?
So affirmations work best whenyou pair them with proof.
So for example, I'm gonna kindof just invite you into my day
for a little minute.
So there's three affirmationsI've been really trying to feel
into.
And the three affirmations are,I am healthy, I am wealthy, I am
(07:05):
wise.
Now, each of those bythemselves, they're fine.
But what I can do is with eachone of those, I can actually
really feel into them and seewhere in my life I am an
energetic match for that.
Okay.
It's taking the time tointentionally give your brain
the evidence that it is true.
So, for example, I might sitwith the affirmation of"I am
(07:28):
healthy." And then in additionto that, after saying, yes, I am
healthy, I will feel into it.
And I will really experimentwith that.
Like, okay, in what ways am Ihealthy?
So I might just say to myself, Inotice what does and doesn't
support my health, my physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
I'm noticing that.
I notice what makes me feel goodand strong and healthy.
(07:48):
And, I'm also noticing whatdoesn't make me feel good and
strong and healthy.
And I'm noticing that the gapbetween noticing and changing my
behavior.
Is changing instantly, right?
I'm noticing that that gap isgetting smaller and smaller and
smaller.
It used to be that I would say,oh, well, I guess I had that
pack of Girl Scout cookies andnow I'm gonna have to, you know,
(08:09):
I'll start again on Monday.
It'll be fine.
But when you're really sittingwith it that,"yes, I can affirm
to myself that I am noticingwhen I am out of alignment with
that goal of being healthy and Ican instantly change and I can
make that gap shorter," then mybrain will say,"oh yeah, you are
doing that.
Thank you for pointing that outto me." Okay.
And so you might notice that, okay, yes, I'm noticing that the
(08:31):
gaps are getting smaller.
I am noticing the things thatimprove my physical health, my
mental health, my emotionalhealth.
I'm intentionally feeding intothose things.
I am choosing to take walksevery day.
I am choosing to hydrate.
I am choosing to pause and tofeel my feelings rather than
emotionally eat.
And each and every day, I amimproving my wellness in small
(08:52):
but meaningful ways.
Okay.
All of that is going to, beaffirming that yes, I am
healthy.
Okay, so now let's kind of playaround with I am Wealthy.
Okay?
This can be a tricky one, especially if you have any debt,
especially if you're not quitemaking what you want to out of
life.
So I might sit into thataffirmation of I am wealthy and
I can give my brain evidencethat, you know what, I know that
(09:14):
wealth isn't just about money.
But it's about experiencingrichness in all of my life, it's
savoring that piece of dessert.
It's sharing a deep conversationwith somebody.
It's spending quality time witha friend.
It's noticing that I am savingmore each and every day.
I'm putting things away.
I'm not wasting money.
I'm treating money with respect, and only spending it on things
(09:37):
that truly enriches my lifebecause that's true wealth is
surrounding yourself with thingsthat truly enrich your life.
And yes, sometimes that meansmoney, but sometimes the wealth
shows up in other ways.
But looking for those evidencesof how is it that I'm
experiencing abundance rightnow?
How is it that I am already avibrational match for wealth?
Maybe it's even playing aroundwith what it is that you're
(09:59):
doing for work.
So if you're looking for a newjob, let's say you're
unemployed, then maybe inaddition to that, you could say,
I am noticing each and every daythat there are new opportunities
to provide income for myself.
There are new jobs to apply to.
It's just noticing those thingsand giving your brain the
intentional assignment of seeingways that you are creating
wealth and abundance foryourself.
(10:21):
It is intentionally remindingyourself that, you know what?
I am grateful.
Gratitude is huge for abundanceand wealth, right?
Just being grateful for what youhave.
So maybe you can tell yourself,I am grateful for the abundance
of experiences, opportunitiesand financial flow that add
quality to my life.
Okay, so now let's play aroundwith, I am wise.
(10:41):
This one's kind of a fun onetoo.
It's like, okay, in what ways amI wise?
Okay.
I'm noticing that I am nurturingmy mind with learning
self-reflection and curiosityeach and every day.
For me, something that I'mwanting to do to give my brain
more evidence that I am a wisewoman is I am practicing reading
from an actual book every day.
I am a hundred percent a podcastperson, an audio book person.
(11:03):
But I'm trying really hard to bevery intentional about actually
reading from a book and findingways to really nourish my mind.
So maybe you wanna give yourselfthe evidence of that, that yes,
I am nurturing my mind throughreading books, through
self-reflection, throughcuriosity, I'm practicing
responding thoughtfully.
Instead of reacting emotionally,I'm tapping into my higher mind
(11:25):
and noticing when my emotionalbody is saying, whoa, I am not
going to be acting wise in thismoment, I'm gonna take some time
to calm down so I can approachthis through a clear thinking
Headspace.
I'm giving myself the rest thatI need so that my thoughts can
be more clear.
I'm remembering that my wisdomisn't just for me, but I'm
noticing how much my ownself-reflection and my own
(11:46):
personal development is alsobenefiting those around me.
It's coming out through mycoaching, through my
conversations, through mypodcast, and even beyond that.
So it's intentionally lookingfor those ways that Yes, I am a
wise woman or a wise person, right?
So notice how different thatfeels to just stating the
affirmations.
I am healthy, I am wealthy, I amwise.
(12:07):
And it's fine to repeat those onrepeat.
But really if you want to stepinto the vibration of those
truly you need to figure outwhat it is that you can do in
the now and the ways that youcan affirm it to yourself in the
current reality where youactually have choice and agency
to see that yes, I am choosingto live more in alignment with
that end goal.
(12:29):
That's when you're going to beexperiencing the wealth and the
abundance.
Okay?
So remember this, thataffirmations aren't about
pretending to be something thatyou're not.
They're about practicingalignment.
It's about stepping into thevibrational energy of what it is
that you want to experience inlife.
With each"I am" statement, it'sa reminder of who you're
consciously choosing to become.
(12:50):
You're not just passivelyrepeating these affirmations,
you're choosing consciously toembody them.
Now if affirmations haven't beenworking for you, it's not the
affirmations that don't work,it's just that you might need to
adjust the way that you're usingthem.
So it's shifting from thatwishful thinking into
consciously choosing how it isthat you want to show up each
(13:11):
and every day.
It is shifting from resistanceinto alignment and from empty
words into daily action.
Now if you would like supportliving more in alignment with
the version of you that you knowis possible, you know that you
can get there, you just need alittle bit of help, you need
some help cleaning up yourthoughts and seeing where your
vibrational match, then come andwork with me.
I would love to work with you.
(13:31):
I have three spots opening upthis month, so come and apply to
work with me now.
I would love to work with you.
Alright, well thank you so muchfor being here today and
remember that your words shapeyour world.
But only when they're backedwith aligned energy and aligned
action.
All right, well, I hope you havea great week and let's talk
soon.
Bye now.
Bye.
