Speaker 2 (00:15):
The difference ethanol is, your friend. Ethanol is the lovely
goodness of sugar within alcohol, so that's system. It's obviously
easily metabolized within the body. Methanol is also in alcohol
when it's made. People that do the ceiling they are
fully aware to take the tops off, so it separates

(00:36):
at various temperatures during the distillation process. And I'm no
expert on that. The difference between ethanol and methanol when
it comes to your body is two totally different things.
If they were sampling bottles from that bar that there
would be, the doses of methanol would be high enough
to be industrial methanol, not standard alcoholic produced methanol which

(00:57):
hasn't been separated.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
So if you ingest a small amount of methanol, is
it radically harmful to you or does there have to
be a certain vilsage before it actually will have a
major effect on you?

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, good question. If you get thirty mils of methanol
and you weigh sixty kilos, you're halfway to be in
a dead bear walking. That's when the party starts. It's very,
very terrible. Once you get a certain point thirty mil
you can pretty much tick the box that you're going
to go blind, that you will have vision impairment at
that point, and that will happen pretty rapidly after. Once

(01:29):
you get to sixty ninety mili. If I had three
shots of methanol, I'll be dead. No if no, but
SnO good, don't pass go. That's it, You're gone. One
would be enough to make you extremely, extremely unwell. When
you go out on a big night. Quite often what
you'll find people will be five to ten hours after
they've been out on the wallop and had a big
night before they start getting crooked bell wake up and

(01:52):
they say they've got the hangover of a lifetime. Most people,
not all, but most people will end up having vision
problems once it gets into soft tissues. Ideally your eyes
are one of the early ones. Liver, kidney, brain. Of course,
anything within your body becomes a soft tissue organ, you're
gonna have some very nasty sensations. Relatively soon you're gonna

(02:14):
be spwn, You're gonna have massive gut cramps, there's every
chance you'll have massive diarrhea. Barley belly emulates a lot
of these symptoms as well, So I reckon a lot
of people that get like barley belly have possibly got
methanol poisoning. And it's just this is the worst I've
ever had.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Two more important things. Asta. Okay, So for what's happened
happening over there and alloods, how would that have happened like?
It sounds like something that has gone drastically wrong somewhere.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Sometimes it is this pure accident. You don't know how
many times someone's fingers have been on those cartons of
bottles in the process. And all you've got to do
is have one slippery character in the middle that goes,
you know what, I'll take this carton. I'll put that
cart and the beautifully copied ones in there. I'm going
to sell this legitimate one over here to Fred, the
buddy man that's got the beach bar. They don't care

(03:03):
what happens to whoever that buys it. They literally do
not care. Do you think there's another planeload of tourists
coming tomorrow? It makes zero difference. Who is the collateral
damage on the way through, It makes no difference. And
for the family of these gorgeous ladies, you know, it's
just horrendous for them.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
I was going to ask you what your advice would
be for anyone traveling to any of these countries, but
I think it's very clear what it would be. Da'nt
drink spirits.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
You know, there's safe ways around it. Now. If you're drinking,
for example, beer, you don't get methanol poisoning in beer.
You know, we've got the ready to drink, the smirnoff
ices and that sort of thing. Just your single serve
where you take the lid off the drink, pre mixed drinks.
There's never been a case in Bali where anybody has
been poisoned through one of these pre mixed drinks, whether

(03:51):
it's whether you buy it from a quickie mart, whether
you buy it from a supermarket wherever, beers, wine, pre
mixed and ciders or fine, if you're drinking those, don't
get got Yeah, the moment someone have to pour a
drink from behind a bar and it comes out of
a neat spirit bottles, well, then that's when you're odd start.
It's a small chance, depending on where you are, that
you're gonna get hit. I've had conversations with people that

(04:13):
their girlfriend or their boyfriend is laying in a fetal
position in the showers because they're in that bad a way.
Everybody that gets poisoned, they never drink over there again. Never.
It is that horrendous, it's that frightening. It will be
worse than watching your dog die of parvoats. It's not fun.
If you can drink safer drinks versus just go yeah, man,

(04:34):
I need one of those to kill a Sunrizes. That
sounds good. Yeah, party on. There's a chance you don't
have to have the sadness that is now going through
these families.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Colin, great advice, and thank you for also explaining everything
to us as well, because I know a lot of
people listening they really don't know. You know, we'd probably
oblivious to it, to be totally honest. This is one
of those reminders. This is a wake up moment for everybody.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
This has become a global issue. So the only upside
that you can take.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Out of this our hearts definitely go out for the
families of Bianca Jones and Hollyballs and everybody else has
been affected by this colin. Thank you so much for
your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
