Tyler Graves has been a firefighter for about 8 years and started at the age of 20. At the young age of 20, the new firefighter was finally ready to be in a fire engine and do the job. Tyler didn’t know that only 4 weeks into the profession, he would experience a major critical incident that was an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) where he performed life saving measures on the wounded Deputy, who ultimately passed away.

5 years later, almost to the exact date, Tyler was involved in his second OIS while working as a Firefighter Paramedic at the time. Once again, Tyler provided life saving measures along with others to the wounded Deputy, who also passed away.

Following the second OIS, Tyler’s wife saw a change in Tyler’s behavior and recommended therapy. Thankfully, Tyler was connected with a therapist who works with first responders and specializes in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). After considering cancelling the first session, Tyler enjoyed the EMDR with the therapist and is looking forward to future sessions.

This is one of our more real podcasts as Tyler discusses the stigma amongst our community and how he has been on numerous traumatic calls for service, but didn’t get the help needed until his wife called him out.

Tyler is a buddy in our Buddy Program. Head to our website and go to the Buddy Program to see Tyler’s photo and bio. Thank you Tyler for being vulnerable and sharing your story with our community.
