Unknown (00:00):
Gib, hello and welcome to another episode of the

(00:10):
podcast. I'm Gib Gerard, herewith one of my favorite things
that we do. I call itintelligence to go that's where
we take pieces that we've doneon the radio this week, and we
hand picked them, mix them up,and we give them to you, for you
to put your pocket and take withyou wherever you go. We got some
great ones for you today. Sohere, without further ado, is

(00:32):
me, Gib, Gerard and John Tesh.
So Gib, I'm not sure why it tookme so long to get this, but
frozen, especially or canned, fruits and vegetables, according
to certified nutritionist Noraminnow, fresh produce can lose
up to 55% of its nutrients allthe time it's picked to the time
it makes it to your grocerystore. Frozen fruits and

(00:54):
vegetables are typically flashfrozen right on the spot. So a
lot of these companies, they letthe fruits and vegetables ripen
in the truck, right? So theydon't have as many nutrients. So
thebetter nutrients come from the
frozen from the frozenvegetables, the frozen fruit,
and it's cheaper. So for me,it's a win, win. I mean, I use
it. I'm a big smoothie guy. Iwill throw that into my

(01:14):
smoothies. It's a great way toget my daily fruits and
vegetables. So yeah, it's alittle bit cheaper. It's
actually better for you. It is,in my mind, it is a win, win.
Just be aware, some of thecanned fruits and vegetables and
some of the they add a littlebit of sugar to them. Yeah? You
that that negates everythingwe're talking about. So make
sure you're getting the realdeal. Make sure you're getting

(01:35):
just the straight up frozenfrozen fruit. That's the way to
go.
Yeah, thanks to you, I havefrozen berries every day. Oh
yeah, put them in there withsome with some yogurt, Greek
yogurt and some milk too. Superfood. It's great protein, and
also you get all that fiber.
It's fantastic. All right, Gib,next time you're feeling chilly,
forget the jacket and just turnon a romantic movie. I know you

(01:56):
love those. According to theJournal of Consumer Research,
study participants who had justhad a cold drink or sat in a
cold room, they were 83% morelikely to choose to watch a
romantic movie compared withthose who weren't chilly. That
was true of men and women. It'sbecause physical coldness
activates a need forpsychological warmth, yes, and
that leads to increasedenjoyment of romantic movies.

(02:19):
What works for me? Gladiatoralso gets my blood going.
Also all the all the shots ofthem, like fighting in the
desert, yeah,I don't need a romantic movie.
The thing about thisis that we are such unbelievably
simple creatures, right? We seewarm emotions. We feel warm on
the inside. We're like, we'rethese little lizards on a rock,

(02:39):
and we just warmed by the sun ofour own feelings, that is, that
is our life. That is how simpleour brains work. And I love
these little hacks. So feelingcold, this is why all those
romantic movies are so popular.
Around Christmas time, everybody's sitting in their
house a little bit cold, youknow that they don't want to
turn their heateron. How many Christmas movies
are you in? Right? Like a dozen.

(03:01):
Keep coming back. They come backevery year. They get played at
least one to be like, 90 yearsold. Everybody thinks, oh my
gosh, look at him. He's 27cents.
I get sent seven cents in themail every time. Yeah, exactly
Josh. Time for another episodeof random intelligence with Gib.
Gerard. Gib, first of all, 62%of women in a recent survey said
they would not date a guy whohad a ponytail. The ponytail is

(03:23):
over.
Now that's absolutely over. Idon't know if it's ever I mean,
like, if Fabio needed to get hishair out of his face at the
height of his popularity, hecould have gotten away with a
ponytail. That's and and BradPitt in like Legends of the Fall
with the long hair. If you'renot those two guys in the 90s,
you can't have a ponytail. But,you know, I've noticed that
people get that now they putnow. They put the ponytail on
the top.

(03:44):
Yeah, they do that. They also dothe man bun. Another is another
thing. Yeah, okay, one more, if it works. 82% of
women say that. In the samesurvey, say a guy over 30 should
never wear an earring.
I know a couple people, know acouple of people who have, like
fate, like men, you know, intheir even in their 50s, who

(04:05):
have some of that stuff, unlessyou are actively fronting a mega
stadium size rock band, yes, take the piercings out. Yeah.
Take the piercings out. Ifyou're an accountant, you don't
get an earring. I'm sorryI remember or or a parrot on
your shoulder. Oh,yeah, yeah, yeah. Only you need
the mystique of a rock starOtherwise, otherwise just, you

(04:25):
know, put on your J Crew and goto work.
I think it's one earring on theleft and then the parrot on the
right.
Very specific into characterdesign. Put
some thought into this. Gib,here's
an interesting statistic. Almost30% of people employed in their
70s are working for themselves.
That's nearly double the shareof entrepreneurs in their 60s.

(04:49):
That makes roughly 1.3 millionentrepreneurs in their 70s
running their own businesses.
And I think maybe that's becausethey just got tired of. Quote,
unquote, working for the man.
They wanted to go off on theirown right, or they spent their
whole lives building a business, and it's as much a part of them
as anything else. So they wantto sit there and keep and keep
working on their business, asopposed to working for somebody

(05:10):
else. Also, you work forsomebody else, then you have a
retirement plan. You work foryourself. Yeah, you got to
either sell the business or, youknow, or keep, or keep working
it. So it does make sense. Ihope, I might, you know, I hope
that this is a sign of of peoplewho really are passionate about
what they do. Have spent theirwhole life building something
they can't let go of it. It'sit's too important to them, and

(05:31):
so they keep working becausethey enjoy it. It's probably
Uber drivers too. I mean, thatcounts Uber drivers. Anybody,
anybody that hangs a shingle anddoes anything, is it? They're an
entrepreneur. That's an oldschool hanging a shingle.
Gib, have you heard about thislatest travel trend? It's
luxury, long distance busses. Wefirst reported on this two years

(05:53):
ago, and now it's hotter thanever. Great way to travel
because of the high gas pricesand the record number of delayed
and canceled flights. Yes,indeed. So luxury busses are
significantly cheaper thantrains and planes because of a
lower cost of equipment, fueland personnel, fewer passengers
too. So one company offers likean 18 passenger bus with seats
that fold into a flat bed. I'venever seen it. That's the key.

(06:16):
They come with a pillow and aplush blanket.
Yeah, look, if you're somebodyyou know, there's, there's the,
there's this culture nowadaysof, you know, you burn the you
burn the candle on both ends.
You're working all the time. Youwant to maximize every moment,
right? Let's say you're in SanFrancisco and you got to get to
Las Vegas. Yeah, you could catcha flight, but you got to deal
with all this stuff beforehand, checking your bag, all that
stuff, or or you work your day,and at the end of the day, you

(06:39):
just get on the night bus andyou sleep your way and then you
wake up in Las Vegas and, boom, you're able to approach your
approach the next day in LasVegas. You know, whatever that
situation is, whatever those twocities are, this is a fantastic
way of maximizing your time.
You're just taking your sleeptime and you're using it as
comfortable travel time. It'scrazy. I've never seen a bus

(06:59):
with a bed. Oh, it's aside fromtour busses. Oh, that's right,
but, but the this is the newthing, where they have, like,
they have little it's, it's likebeing in a really nice, first
class cabin, but it's on a bus.
Yeah? Love it all right?
From our health and wellnessfiles, Gib Gerard, if you're
looking to make new friends, theexperts say, Try finding a way
to sing together. And I knowthat you are a veteran of many
different choirs, including, including a Jazz Choir. This is

(07:23):
the message from an OxfordUniversity study. The study
found singing is one of thefastest ways to promote feelings
of closeness and cooperation.
Says it's because breeding inunison with other people
triggers the release of thebonding hormone oxytocin.
Look, it is. It's very bonding.
There's a reason why. Why? Somegroups, some bands, stay
together for so long you getbonded. And it is a well, I do

(07:43):
this with my family. I sing withmy family in the car, much to my
teenage daughter's chagrin, buteverybody else seems to enjoy
it. There is something aboutmusic in general, but singing
specifically where, when yourbodies are synced in that way,
where you are. You are moving torhythm. You are singing to
rhythm. You're playing aninstrument to rhythm. That sense
of flow and a shared sense offlow, it bonds you, it bonds

(08:06):
you. It bonds you intensely. Andwe now, we have the research to
prove it. There's a reason whythere's so much drama around
these rock bands and acts thatthat were together for so long,
because they're so close that,of course, they start to bump
into each other because thesinging, the singing makes them
close. Fleetwood Mac would havebeen fine if they were just
instrumental musicians, if theyweren't all dating each other.

(08:27):
No, that's it. They starteddating each other because of the
singing. Gib, we'vehad many studies on the power of
humming, what it does to Gosh, your whole body, and it's a
great way to relieve stress ofthe latest study tells us, if
you hum the chorus of yourfavorite song, you do that for
30 seconds. It activatesrhythmic vibrations within the

(08:48):
inner ear that produce calmingalpha brain waves. So Cornell
University scientists studiedthis, they say this humming
effect is so powerful it canslash your stress by as much as
48% humming the chorus of yourfavorite song, especially when
you'redriving, yeah. So look the
humming, singing the way thatyou have to soften your soft
palate actually de stresses you.

(09:11):
The fact that you have to slowyour brain down to do anything
to music is super helpful. Andthen, of course, there's the
comfort of your favorite song.
All of that adds up to beingsomething that is way more, that
is calming for your body andhelping you with stress. I want
you guys to take this all with agrain of salt. Don't just be
sitting there in the middle oflike a courtroom hearing,
humming to yourself. You're notgoing, you're not gonna get all

(09:32):
you're not gonna, you're notgonna beat the charges. You
gotta do this in a privatespace, and then you like your
car, and then you come into thestressful situation,
more relax. You could alsodestroy your relationship, yeah,
also beware ofwhat your favorite song is. It
might be inappropriate, so justyou know, pick a new favorite
song. All right, folks from ourrelationship and dating files,

(09:52):
joint bank accounts, that's thekey, apparently, to a loving,
long, lasting relationship. Thiscomes from a new study now from
Cornell. I. The research wasdone by marketing professor
Emily garbinski, and she foundcouples in serious relationships
who combined their finances, they felt more harmonious, more
committed, more satisfied withtheir relationship, and had more
common goals. What do you thinkI mean? Look, study after study

(10:14):
after study that we report onshows this. It's a little
uncomfortable, especially forpeople who have, you know,
relatively independent lives, and they get married later. It
can be a little bit stressful todo this, but study after study
shows that this is the best wayto create that kind of
closeness. It comes from thefact that one, whether you want
to or not, you can't hide fromyou can't hide things from your

(10:37):
partner. It increases the amountof trust, and it increases the
fact that you guys are investedin the fact that you guys are a
couple, that it is not you andher, it is it is the two of you
together. That process does alot for the psychology of your
relationship.
Let us know the website is, orrather the email address is John

(10:57):
at test Comm, John test.com Doyou have a joint bank account in
your relationship? I do so Gib,I think it was maybe four or
five years ago. We reported onthis, and I told you that I
wanted one of these. Well, they're selling out, and I might
not be able to get one.
Tricycles for adults, the hotnew bike trends still hot. They
give the rider more stability, which I really need than a two

(11:19):
wheel bike. Tricycles are easierto to mount, become to mount
because the middle bar is verylow and riders sit up straighter
with the pedals positioned infront of the seat. You've seen
these things. You have to reallytry hard to fall off of a
tricycle. I could probably doit. You could, if anybody
could find a way to fall on atricycle. It's you. So look, if

(11:42):
you're if you're at a point inyour life where riding a bike is
no longer for you, I get it ifyou can still ride a bike, I
would say the only adulttricycle that I'll accept are
those ones with the giant wheelsthat you can like ride onto the
pond or the lake, and also it'sa giant tricycle that one's fine
for the rest of us. What do wedo with the
tricycle. I find that the guys,it's mostly men. I find the man

(12:03):
I see on. First of all, theyhave that giant flag that the
recumbent, the recumbent, right?
It's not gonna stop me fromhitting you. But anyway, I
thought I find that a lot ofthese guys, then they're wearing
sandals, socks, they right, theyhave, they have an attitude. Oh,
right. It's like, you know, they'll cut me off. I'm in a
car, and they'll cut me off, youknow. But then again, I want to
get in one I'm gonna have like aflag with a Jolly Roger on it,

(12:28):
Pirate tricycle, just areminder. Just because you have
the right of way doesn't meanyou're protected from getting
hit. Saying thatI'm gonna board you now.
Pop quiz time when it comes togerms, which is worse, men's
beards or dog fur. We've seenthree different studies on this,
and now a new one from the folksin Switzerland found that men's

(12:50):
beards harbor more harmfulbacteria than dog fur. For the
experiment, researchers tookswabs from the men's beards and
the necks of dogs of variousbreeds. They found that all the
bearded men who ranged in agefrom 18 to 76 had high microbial
counts, but only 75% of the dogshad similarly high microbial

(13:11):
counts. I iThis is disturbing. Dogs roll
around,because that's the thing with
their beer, exactly the baselinefor a dog and how dirty they are
is pretty is pretty high of abaseline. That's a high water
mark. Like cats, they're superclean. They're always that's why
they have hair balls, right? Thedog, the dog doesn't care dogs.

(13:32):
Dogs stay dirty. They're they'rehappy. I mean, obviously, bathe
your dogs, all that stuff thatnow we got to deal with the fact
that, what are men doing totheir beards, that we're
allowing this to be worse thanthe dog. I just man, we got a
lot of unpacking to do. I wantto know where the bacteria is
coming from, where those beardsare going, and why we're not
regularly washing our faces.

(13:53):
Gentlemen, let's just invest alittle face wash.
Well, the last sentence here inthis study is some of the men's
beards tested positive forbacteria that actually posed a
threat to human life.
What kill you with my beard, like little
tardigrades and amoebas areliving in your living in your
beard, stop. That's it for theshow today. Thank you guys so

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
