right, So we're going from momsto serial killers. Are you ready?
What's most important to me? Newsupdates, news updates, I like all
the local news. Joining us nowAlicia Dennis, editorial director for People Magazine,

(11:16):
here to talk about the new serieson investigation Discovery Network People Magazine investigates
Surviving a Serial Killer. How areyou, Alicia? I'm doing great.
Thanks for having me, Thanks fortalking about this. Yeah, well,
tell us about the show. Thisis a six part series that we have
put together where we are looking atserial killer cases, but specifically individuals who

(11:43):
survived being attacked by serial killers, survived being kidnapped by them. They come
and talk to us about what thatexperience was like, how they managed to
escape, and in many cases aregoing back to the actual place where this
occurred to them. Oh wow,So this is a very different kind of

(12:05):
show and that you may know aboutthese serial killers. You may think that
you know everything about these cases, but you have not heard from these survivors
in this way. You're doing sixepisodes, but are there more survivors of
serial killers? It seems like youjust don't hear about them. Yes,

(12:26):
there are. And it's interesting becauseever since we started with this show,
and we just had the first episodeair on Sunday. We have had additional
people reach out to us, so, you know, impacted by the show
and the survivors telling their stories, that they are also survivors who want to

(12:46):
share their stories. So there's manymore. We have multiple survivors in some
of these shows talking about their encounterwith that specific killer, and we have
many many other stories we could tellwell if we end up doing more of
these episodes, But I think whathappens is when you say that, people

(13:07):
don't really hear about that as much. It's very difficult for these survivors to
come forward with these stories. They'refirst of all, incredibly horrifying and scary
and terrible. But then second ofall, I think that sometimes survivors feel
overwhelming guilt that they did something thatmade them be in a situation that they

(13:28):
became a victim, or you know, that they're guilty that because they didn't
tell their story the right way, that maybe they could have saved someone else's
life, or why did they surviveand other people didn't. There's a lot
of trauma connected to this that isn'tonly you know, the physical trauma,
but the emotional ongoing trauma. Yeah, you covered a lot of the things

(13:50):
that I was going to ask youabout, like survivor's guilt. I think
for me, I'm completely surprised andamazed that they have the strength to talk
about this and to relive it,basically, that they are sharing that with
millions of people with strangers. Inour show, we try to make it

(14:13):
incredibly clear when people come forward andthey say that they want to be part
of this, that it's going tobe really, really hard. You know,
your story is going to be sharedin People magazine, It's going to
be on People dot com, it'sgoing to be broadcast. Millions of people
are going to hear it and knowit. Are you sure you're ready for
that? And I am. Ifeel like I can't even imagine what it

(14:35):
is that they went through. It'sjust so horrible, and the fact that
they have the strength to talk aboutit because they want to try to help
somebody else just is mind blowing me. Can you talk a little bit about
how these women manage to survive? Was it luck, was the crime was
interrupted? Was it convincing arguments thatthese people will allowed them to go free.

(15:01):
It's such a good question because there'sso many different ways that these women
found that their survival instincts kicked in. And obviously these killers were very different.
You were dealing with different psychosis, different mind games, different power trips

(15:22):
that these monsters were on, andso what worked in one case would totally
not have worked in a different one. You know, there was there survivors
who pretended to be in love withtheir captor so that this person would trust
them and have them let them bealone so that they could escape. There

(15:43):
are people that tried to, youknow, figure out ways to escape physically,
people that you know, tried toplay dead. There's all these different
ways that they would search to beable to get and so it's very unique
in each of these cases, Ithink. So you talk about how different

(16:06):
each of the serial killers is orwas are there similarities or are there things
that these women said, Hey,this stuck out about this guy because they're
not you know, like Ted Bundy. Wasn't he considered to be a very
charming guy. Yeah, he was. And there are some of these cases
like certainly with Rodney Alcala, whowas known as the Dating Game Killer,

(16:29):
as well as Bruce Lindall, whowas known as the handsome devil. We
also have the Casanova killer, whowas Paul John Knowles. These are people
who, like Ted Bundy, likeyou mentioned, had this charisma, had
this aura about them that people thatencountered them said it was just, you
know, you felt like you knewthem, They felt like your friends,

(16:52):
They felt like someone you completely wouldtrust and want to be around, and
then in a split second, therewould be this change and all almost as
if this person vanished and there wasa blank face now and the eyes of
a shark with nothing behind them, and you couldn't reach the person who had
been there before, almost you know, this thing where they became a monster

(17:12):
before your eyes and you had noway of knowing that was about to happen.
So there are those similarities with someof these cases. But then you
have cases like the railroad killer, which we have an episode about. He
was a guy who would just jumpon rail road cars and land in various
cities randomly and attack people that hewould just come upon. He had absolutely

(17:37):
none of that kind of luring peopleinto his you know aura. He would
just attack people brutally without any anyof that. So there's a lot of
differences in that way. But Ithink the similarities across the board are that
these are monsters who have this horriblegame about power and want to make sure

(18:00):
that they are controlling people in thisway, and it's very diabolical in that
similarity. Can you just give usreal quick the upcoming episodes? Yes,
so you will see the case ofthe railroad killer next week, as well
as the Casa Nova Killer, whichis a fascinating case. This woman,

(18:22):
Barbara maybe Able, came home toher house to find a stranger there holding
her sister captive. This guy saidhe was going to kidnap her son,
and she convinced him to take herinstead, and so she tells the story
of how she got away, aswell as the Bishop's Basement, which is
about a guy who ran a churchout of his house and he was doing

(18:45):
some really awful, secret, crazythings and a survivors of him, I
remember when that happened, because thatwas a mid to late eighties that happened.
That's exactly right, and it's reallyone of those cases that I think
that Silence of the Lambs and BuffaloBill character were built on. You know,

(19:06):
it's really really creepy and scary. And then we also at the end
of the series, have a lookat the Cook brothers, which were serial
killers who were siblings, and that'sincredibly rare, that very seldom happened.
And the victim in that case,Cheryl Bartlett, fan has this story to

(19:29):
tell about how when she was kidnappedby the first brother, she is trying
to figure out how to get away, and then the second brother walks in
and she thinks, oh, I'msaved. Someone's come in now and someone's
going to save me. And itturns out that no, this person is
involved in the crime, and it'sjust really chilling. People Magazine investigates Surviving

of the shows. Thank you somuch. Can you imagine confronting a serial
killer? Oh? Good lord,I mean I guess you wouldn't know.
Yeah, just imagine that, youknow, it would just be one of

(20:15):
the odds of maybe at some pointyou were face to face to a like
a like a killer. Yeah. They say there are twenty five to thirty
serial killers operating in the United States. That's that's that's a comforting statistic.
