Speaker 2 (06:47):
Okay. What's the most important to me? News? Updates? I
like the local news.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Well, yesterday we lost an absolute legend. Em sly Stone,
whose real name was Sylvester Stewart, wasn't just a musician.
He was a movement Born in Texas, raised in California.
Early in his life, he sang in the church, but
his first real job in music was actually as a
radio DJ in San Francisco.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Sold okay, saw already all is being up to you
by the hosts of Music Record.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
Shop, and that's where he got his name. Actually, that
was his radio name, sly Stone. Then he transitioned to
music producer, producing music for the bau Brummels and Gray
Slick before her Jefferson Airplane days.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
But sly always wanted to create.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
His own music, so he joined forces with his brother's band,
forming sly in the Family Stone, a band that was
pretty much unlike anything anybody had ever seen before. Black
and white, men and women all jamming together, songs like
everyday people danced to the music. Thank you for letting
me be myself again. We're all smash hits and well.
Their nineteen sixty nine wood Stock set was absolutely legendary.

(08:01):
Car's Family Stone guitarist Larry Graham.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
I don't think we realized it until Woodstock, and somehow
on that stage with you, you know, minimum half a
million people out there going crazy, somehow we knew that
that was a turning point. You know, you could just
tell that something was happening. I had never heard anything
like that in my life. I mean, there's something to

(08:24):
really get the heart pumping, you know, and I'll really
never forget that feeling.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
But fame hit hard, sly battle drug addiction and slowly
faded from the spotlight. But still his influence runs deep,
from Prince to hip hop to modern rock and pump funk.
He's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, of course,
and in twenty twenty three he finally told his story
in a memoir titled Thank You for Letting Me Be
Myself Again. He died of complications of COPD. He was

(08:49):
eighty two. But Pittsburgh, we're very lucky. The Family Stone
Band is actually going to be performing a free show
at Heartwood Acre's coming up on July twentieth, and of
course going to be performing the greatest.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Hits of Sliding the Family Stone.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
If you want more information on that show, go to
Alleghany County dot us slash Summer. That's Alleghany County dot
us slash Summer.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
