My chat with Michelle Owusu felt more like reconnecting with an old friend rather than just a simple conversation. There was something incredibly authentic and heartfelt about our exchange. Despite everything she's dealing with, she handles it all with such strength and grace. Michelle, a talented writer and filmmaker with a rich background in technology consulting. She weaves together a unique blend of creativity, authenticity, and purpose in her work. Her award-winning short film, The Surrogate, captivated audiences with its poignant exploration of masculinity, showcasing her remarkable storytelling ability. Now, she’s embarking on an exciting new journey with her young adult science fiction and fantasy novel—an adventurous tale that intertwines magic, environmental themes, and the powerful journey of self-discovery during girlhood. In "The Surrogate," we follow Markus, a young man who feels he has significantly missed out on a connection with his father. In an effort to navigate his emotions, he takes the unusual step of hiring someone for support. As he awaits his appointment, an older, burly man enters, making Markus both anxious and awkwardly sift through his hoodie for cash. Initially, it seems like he’s about to engage an older companion, but the conversation reveals a different intention. Markus has brought in Darryl, a curious man, to step into the role of his father and help him confront the childhood trauma and neglect he faced. As their discussion unfolds, Markus starts to divulge his feelings, only for Darryl to challenge him, defending the choices of his father. The narrative reaches an emotional peak when Markus breaks down, expressing his determination to break the cycle as he prepares for fatherhood himself. Darryl responds with understanding, assuring Markus that he has the potential to be a loving and nurturing father.
