19 year old nursing student Stephen Smith was found unalive on a South Carolina highway in 2015. His death was initially ruled a hit and run, and although an investigation was underway, it went cold in 2016. Buster Murdaugh's name was mentioned throughout the investigation over 20x, but no one from the Murdaugh family was ever questioned. Many believed it to be a Murdaugh cover-up as no concrete evidence pointed to a hit and run. Smith's case was reopened in 2021, and with the attention surrounding the Murdaugh Netfilix Special, his family is hopeful to get some answers. Susanne Andrews, a family friend and creator of "Standing for Stephen," is advocating tirelessly to get a hate crime bill (Smith was openly gay) passed in South Carolina, which is one of the only two states in the US that doesn't have a hate crime bill at a state level. Andrews joins us to chat about the state of Smith's case, who he was as a person, what she thinks really happened to him, and more.
