Speaker 1 (00:00):
How much room is
there for you in your calendar?
If you're anything like thefolks that I've been working
with, you've made time for likeall the things your job, your
family, your chores but when itcomes to like you, your goals,
your aspirations, your hopes, the projects, the ideas that you
(00:21):
want to bring into life, they're probably on the back
burner.
And don't worry, I think mostof us are like in that situation
where we prioritize theobligations and the commitments
outside of ourselves and we wantto deliver, we want to make
sure that people know we'refreaking dependable, of course,
but at the risk of ourselves.
And so then the questionbecomes like why do I still have
(00:43):
the same fitness goals, thesame learning goals, the same
books to read on the list that Ihad last year and the year
before and the year before that?
Well, I think it's because wejust straight up, do not
prioritize ourselves or maketime for us to work on those
(01:04):
things, like we don't dedicatetime to it in our calendar.
If you're a calendar user, ifyou're not, hang with me.
I'm going to talk about somethings that can help you.
Put yourself first, makeyourself a priority, and by make
yourself a priority, what Imean is get some momentum on
making some progress on thoseprojects, on those goals, on
(01:24):
those goals, on those dreams, onthose things that you keep
saying.
Someday, someday, someday, I'mgoing to share some stuff that
helps me, like get those ballsrolling.
And the beautiful thing is,once those balls are rolling,
stuff really, really just startshappening.
And so the first thought is tolike think about all the things
that you have in your world andput them into buckets.
The first thought is to likethink about all the things that
you have in your world and putthem into buckets.
(01:47):
I have a bunch of buckets, butthere's three buckets that
anybody can start with.
One bucket is job.
Like, what is the job?
What is the thing that you haveto do?
Go to work, go to school, whatever that is the job,
because those things take timeand we kind of got to do them so
we can have the future and thecomforts and all the things that
(02:07):
we have.
The other bucket is people, andwhen I say people, I'm talking
about your people, like yourfamily, your community, your
friends, like all of thosethings that maybe they bleed
into the job, maybe they don't,but those things are.
That's another bucket.
Right, I got to spend time withmy family.
You got to do holiday stuff.
There's weddings and all thosethings, and then there's you,
(02:30):
and you're probably feeling italready Like I never really
think about me.
That's the point here.
And so think about the bigrocks.
Look at your calendar.
If you use a calendar, pull outyour calendar, and I don't care
if it's a digital calendar orif it's one of those like write
down paper planners.
Take that bad boy out and lookat it and like really examine
(02:55):
all the things that you havewritten down.
How many of them, or how muchspace does job take up?
It's probably going to takemost of the space.
How much space does your peopletake up?
And then, how much space do youtake up?
My gut tells me you there's very, very little time and probably
(03:18):
no time at all that accounts foryou, for your commitment to
yourself, to your dreams, toyour goals, to your targets.
And now that you did like asuper fast inventory by just
looking at your calendar andseeing what buckets, what all
that time is committed to, andyou're starting to think of like
man, I really wanted to learnhow to play guitar.
I really wanted to build thatdeck in the backyard.
(03:41):
I really wanted to start thatlittle side hustle of mine Like,
yeah, exactly.
So what I want you to do now isget you something to write with
or type away, get out yourkeyboard and start banging on
that bad boy.
Once you make a list of thegoals, the projects, the ideas,
the dreams, the aspirations thathave been in the back of your
mind forever and ever and writethem down Okay, write every
(04:05):
single one of them down.
I'm not going to make I'm not agenie here, I'm not going to
make them all happen, but theidea is to get them out of your
head, because once they get outof your head, they're a little
closer to like actually becomingsomething for real, for real.
Okay, I want you to hit pauseand write down all the things,
all the tinkering, projects, hopes, dreams, goals, ideas.
(04:28):
I want you to write them down.
I want you to hit pause andwrite those things down super,
super quick.
Doesn't matter if you can readthem or not, but just dump them
out.
Whatever that is Playing theguitar, learning a new language,
spending more time, giving yourfamily more TLC, undivided
attention, starting your sidehustle, whatever it is, write
(04:49):
them down and, after you do hitlike unpause, this bad boy, and
we'll go on to the next step.
Okay, maybe you didn't hit pauseand that's okay.
I'm not going to tell anybody.
What I want you to do is lookat the list that you just wrote
down or maybe you kept it inyour head and pick one.
I don't care how you pick it,just pick one of those things.
(05:10):
And then I want you to go backto your calendar and I want you
to find some space in the nextthree to six calendar and I want
you to find some space in thenext three to six weeks.
Find a space, an empty spacethat's not already committed to
something.
And I want you to fill in likea two-hour block, and if you
could do four, six or eight, doit.
Find that block of time andwrite down that thing, whatever
(05:33):
it is that goal Number one Iknow that feels a little bit
scary.
That feels a little bit scary.
It feels a little bit silly.
Or maybe you're struggling tolike find time in the next three
to six weeks because you got somuch stuff on there.
If that's the case, then maybenext six to 10 weeks, find the
block.
The point is, find the spaceand time in there and write down
(05:53):
that thing that you want towork on.
Okay, all right, now, if youreally really want to increase
the probability of you actuallymoving on that thing and making
something happen, you got to,like, get it out First.
You got it out of your head, now you wrote it down somewhere.
Now you need to put it out intothe universe.
One good way to do that is toleave it in the comments.
(06:15):
Drop a note in the comment whatthat big thing was or is, so
that we know, so we can supportyou.
And now it's like, oh my god,it might actually happen.
It's probably.
You're probably gonna getnervous because, like, if I
admit it to somebody else now,it's a commitment like no, it's
a commitment to you first, butif you invite other people along
to play with you, then you'remore likely to actually do the
(06:38):
damn thing.
And I want to be fullytransparent the simple act of
writing it down doesn't make ithappen.
It increases the likelihood ofit happening.
The action of sharing it withother people, telling other
people, releasing it into theworld, doesn't make the thing
(07:04):
happen.
It increases the likelihood ofit happening.
Okay, so what you've done sofar is you've upped the
percentage of you actuallymoving on these things that are
important to you.
You've actually prioritized youand made a commitment to you,
and that is powerful.
Now, plans don't mean a damnthing without execution.
I'm going to say it again yourplan don't mean nothing if you
(07:28):
don't execute.
You're just going to write itagain next month and write it
again next month, and you'veplanned, but you haven't
accomplished anything, and thatain't what we're about.
So the next step is guard thattime right.
You're going to see it.
It's going to be every day, every minute that ticks by, that
bad boy's on your calendar.
And so now what you can do iswhen people say, hey, man, I got
(07:51):
this thing, you want to do thisthing, or I need help with this
thing, you say, man, I can't doit on that day, I'm already
booked.
You don't have to.
You don't even have to tellthem why you're saying no.
All you got to say is no, I'vealready scheduled, I'm already
booked at that time.
That time's already taken.
Can we do it another time?
This is you like building thestrength of guarding your
(08:16):
calendar and valuing yourself.
And then, when it actuallycomes to the date whatever date
you wrote down.
All you have to do is work onthe thing.
Now here's another trip hazardthat people get.
They get all wound up like, ohwell, it's really big and I
can't finish it and I don't knowall the steps and I'm like
that's okay, because all we wantto do is move that ball just a
little bit.
So on that day, wherever youmark that two hour block or four
(08:40):
hour block, whatever youcommitted to it you just sit
down and think about it.
If you already know what thefirst step is, take the first
step right.
Like if you said I want tobuild the deck, well, you need
to have a material list for thatdeck.
So sit down and write down thematerial list.
Or maybe you want to get fancyand you need somebody to design
it for you.
Freaking, reach out to a coupleof designers so they can give
(09:03):
you some options, so you can getthe ball rolling Again.
This time that you're committingto yourself is not about waving
a wand and making everythinghappen in one day.
It's about having a commitmentto yourself to move the ball on
the things that are important toyou and then, when that time
comes, you actually sit down andtake action and make progress
(09:26):
on the thing you want to focuson progress over perfection.
If it's just sketching it outand thinking about it a little
bit, that counts the first time.
The second time you got to takea bigger action, but that's the
magic of it is, once you getthat ball rolling, you start
getting momentum, you take thefirst little baby step, then it
makes the next step become super, super clear.
(09:48):
And then you just got to takethat step and then the next step
becomes super, super clear.
But if you don't make time foryou, if you don't account for
yourself and like dedicate achunk of time to make your
dreams, your goals, yourprojects like come to reality,
it's never going to happen.
It's going to stay on your list.
(10:10):
Now, this little speech, thislittle sermon landed with you.
Share it with a friend and letme know in the comments, like
what, what stood out to you, orand if you think it's all raw,
raw hogwash, I don't mind if youlet me know, because you know
that comment is going to give mesome impressions too.
Be kind to yourself, be cooland we'll talk at you next time.
(10:30):
Peace.
