Jason Connell (00:01):
Whoa, just
curious. Welcome to Just curious
media. This is let's talk CobraKai. I'm Jason Connell.
Sal Rodriguez (00:10):
And I'm Sal
Rodriguez.
Jason Connell (00:12):
All right, Sal,
we are back for a another
special episode. And I know wesay that a lot. But this is a
collection of four very specialepisodes out. And I'm happy that
we're at the third one.
Sal Rodriguez (00:29):
Yeah. And a
revisit a come back around.
Jason Connell (00:33):
Come back around.
Yes. When we reach around.
Hello. We are definitely goingback in time. And re visiting
our version of the Karate Kidpart 319 89 scene by scene
breakdown. rerelease we aredoing
Sal Rodriguez (00:52):
you want to have
a certain sequence of things. It
is
Jason Connell (00:55):
a sequence of
things because I wanted to go
back it's been a long time.
Since these episodes were on thepodcast, right? So if a new fan
or avid fan wants to go back andlike, oh, I want to hear the
trilogy, the scene by scenebreakdance. You gotta go hunting
for them. Right? Yes, Karate Kidis the first one first episode.
But the other ones are sprinkledin. And so I wanted to go back
(01:18):
also talk about where we were inthat space and time when we did
these because we did them all indifferent places. And put them
in a row like boom, boom, boom, boom, right in a row for people.
And so we're not redoing it.
We're actually taking the oldcontent and putting, you know,
some window dressing on thebeginning of it. And then
(01:39):
leading new and because ourintro, Sal are not even our
intros. Now, there was no justcurious. And I think on some of
them early on, I'm doing nomercy. So yeah, now we kind of
have a style you do several 100episodes together, collectively
for just curious, but we'redefinitely pushing the 150 mark.
And let's talk Cobra Kaiterritory. So you begin to get a
(02:02):
style. So it's kind of fun. Ialso think our fans if they
haven't heard it in a whilehearing us then I think it's
fun.
Sal Rodriguez (02:09):
I wonder if we
sound younger? Or like when you
listen, like you don't if wewere to rewatch season one
episode one through 10 of CobraKai itself. Yeah. Oh, they look
super young. Everybody looks atme. I wonder if like, do we
sound young and when we did itin 2020? No Mercy.
Jason Connell (02:30):
Yeah, just speed
it up, just play it faster. So I
haven't myself gone back andlisten to the scene by scene
breakdowns in quite some time.
So this will be an opportunityfor me and you as well, to
listen to these new episodeswith this new content on the
front of them and play themthrough the contents. Great, no
doubt about it. Now, maybe manyyears down the road. We could
(02:50):
revisit the movies again andmaybe do a director's
commentary, or even do a sceneby scene breakdown. Again, I'm
sure we would have somedifferent takes. But this
episode was originally and it'sstill there, it's gonna stay
where it is. Episode 28. Sothat's how long ago? It goes
back. So goes back aways. Werecorded it. October 16 2020.
(03:12):
How about that? It feels likeages ago.
Sal Rodriguez (03:23):
Everybody
remembers 2020 20 We reckon we
forget it.
Jason Connell (03:26):
We released it.
October 28 2020. So I needed alittle in a few days, couple of
weeks to turn it around to bigmovie. The running time was two
hours and 30 minutes and 20seconds now. I don't know if
indeed the seconds that episodeis going to be longer because
for padding it this new this newintro is going to be on the top
(03:48):
of that. But the movie itself isan hour 52 So we extended past
the movie because I had a lot ofthings to say about all valley
in the credit card par three nodoubt about it. I wasn't happy
about that. That's welldocumented.
Sal Rodriguez (04:06):
Jason I think
you're gonna be like one day in
a in a senior living facility.
Jason Connell (04:10):
A 150 years from
now.
Sal Rodriguez (04:14):
50 years from now
you'll be in a senior living
facility. It'll be like, Comeon, Mr. Khanna we need to get
you to bed you're like that allValley. They just changed the
rules.
Jason Connell (04:23):
Credit card. Part
three is on TV somewhere, or
someone has
Sal Rodriguez (04:27):
like classic
television tonight. Now,
Jason Connell (04:30):
I have learned to
love this movie. I appreciate
the credit card part three, evenmore now than when we did this
episode. When we did thisepisode, I had only seen it. I
think two times and I did itonce more for notes ever three
times. But I began to like lookat it differently. Like wow, you
know, they're at the Enos houseand this whole intro. It's
(04:53):
really dark and really fun torevisit. So there's so much
richness in there now. Yeah, there's some role so as Mr.
Miyagi and Daniel dangle overthis side of the cliff like
they're repelling like, Okay, Idon't need that per se. And the
whole valley was an afterthoughtand I think if we ever get rough
macho on the show, I think he'sgot some things to say about the
(05:16):
Karate Kid three as well. It'snot his fondest trust me on
that.
Sal Rodriguez (05:20):
No, I think he's
gone on record. Yes.
Jason Connell (05:22):
He's caught on.
Yeah.
Sal Rodriguez (05:24):
I think he has
Yeah, so and but here's the but
the light at the end of thetunnel. Is that today after
Cobra Kai season five, yep. hascompletely redeemed credit card
part three.
Jason Connell (05:37):
Completely.
Right. We have loved Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, we
Sal Rodriguez (05:41):
love to hate
Terry silver. If it weren't for
credit, get three. We wouldn'thave Terry silver today.
Jason Connell (05:45):
There's so much
good stuff in it. It's just it's
a great feeder for the show.
It's great cannon for the show.
And the cannon stops here. Butmaybe not if there's one Hillary
Swank, but we'll save that forthe next revisit, if you will.
So I'm going to read now, oursynopsis, which is currently
(06:06):
tied to this episode and willcontinue to be there but I just
like going back and revisitingthis. So here it goes. Jason
Connell and Sal Rodriguez, breakdown the classic movie and talk
about living next to Mr. Miyagi, these little trees. Daniel
becoming a Cobra Kai andplatonic relationships. I want
to really cover it there. Now.
The Mr. Miyagi little treereference is I did live next to
(06:29):
it. You know, decades later, andunbeknownst to me at the time,
it's when I watched the movieagain years later in 2020. I was
like, Wait a second. I lived inMount Washington, Los Angeles,
which is by Highland Park inPasadena and Eagle Rock, and
they filmed the scene a littletrees, Mr. Matthews little
trees, all that was in HighlandPark. And right by the railroad
(06:52):
tracks, I know the area it'schanged when I lived there, but
that is it. Reservoir Dogs hadsome scenes nearby Caddyshack
film that a house right there aswell. Danny Noonan's house, the
rest of the movie was, I thinkshot in Florida, but I love it
now. Seeing that connectionreally bonded it to me. And then
(07:12):
of course, the next point,Daniel becoming a Cobra Kai Sal.
Mind blowing.
Sal Rodriguez (07:20):
Yeah, as much as
we'd love to forget about that.
Yeah. Let's go he did. He becamea Cobra Kai was under the
tutelage of one Terry Silva. Theevil tutelage. Totally the
master plan, make his knucklesbleed. Yeah, it was tough to
see.
Jason Connell (07:35):
And then platonic
relationships because Jessica
and Daniel really, really neverit was kind of clunky. Like, are
they
Sal Rodriguez (07:42):
laughing? Have
you added that? Yeah, that makes
me laugh. It makes me well, because
Jason Connell (07:45):
during the
episode that we recorded, you
talked about relationships likethis, so yeah, and we were
talking about it.
Sal Rodriguez (07:53):
Well, you know,
male, female platonic
relationships are interesting.
They're interesting. There's alot of controversy surrounding
them. It's like, you can't justbe friends without people
whispering and, and allegedly, and while they're probably doing
this, nobody just accepts thefact that a man and a woman
especially a young man, or youngwoman can be friends.
Jason Connell (08:10):
Well, I'm here to
say that Daniel and Jessica or
that she was getting over an ex.
She moved back to Ohio. But sheintroduced Daniel to Amanda. So,
yes, your platonic relationshippaying off.
Sal Rodriguez (08:28):
So there you go.
That's what I'm talking about.
Recent Cobra Kai completelylegitimizing Karate Kid three
Jason Connell (08:33):
completely. I'm
now going to read the synopsis
from the movie, The Karate KidPart Three ostracize villain,
John crease attempts to gainrevenge on Daniel and Miyagi,
with the help of a Vietnam Warcomrade, the wealthy owner of a
toxic waste disposal business. Ilove that Miyagi lost the Mr.
(08:55):
There on the synopsis.
Sal Rodriguez (08:57):
Needs missed, and
I would have liked Terry silver
to be mentioned. Yeah, by
Jason Connell (09:00):
name. I
completely agree. But it's
better than Well, maybe not. Butit's not a bad synopsis. I think
when we read the last two, itwas like, that's kind of off
point. It's there.
Sal Rodriguez (09:11):
It's descriptive.
So Wait, does Terry silver stillhave the toxic waste disposal
business or is he in anothertype of business? Remember, he's
talking about he's probably incrypto now.
Jason Connell (09:19):
Yeah, he's moved
on. This is 89 this is the 80s
He still had that in Borneo.
Hey, yeah, he's making deals inthe bathtub and the bubble bath
with his assistant there whenMike Barnes comes in. There's so
much goodness to go back andrevisit now. Like I'm so happy
that the Karate Kid Part Threeexist. But there was a time that
I thought this is ridiculous. Soit's only because Cobra Kai made
(09:41):
it cool again. They could stillfix all Valley. That's just
something that such attack dogcan
Sal Rodriguez (09:50):
they do? Well,
they
Jason Connell (09:51):
can they do? They
can rerelease the Karate Kid
part three, with an actual allvalid it's 15 more minutes
running time. But they fix theproblem. Anyway, that's that so
now so just to give an homageand credit where credit's due,
why don't you give us a rundownof who made the credit card,
(10:12):
part three, the cast and crew.
Sal Rodriguez (10:14):
Director John G.
Abelson, writer Robert MarkKaman. cinematographer, Steve
Iaconelli cast Ralph Macho. PatMarita, Robin lively Thomas Ian
Griffith. Martin Cove, SeanCanaan. Composer Bill Conti.
Producer, Jerry Weintraub. Ifeel like I'm an announcer for
the Oscars. You
Jason Connell (10:34):
did great. And
the Razzie goes to the Karate
Kid, Part Three. Now that's anamazing cast. I mean, so many of
them. The cinematographer wasnew, but everybody else in it
well, okay, except for the newercast. But the key players are
coming over from the first twofilms. Now we don't have William
(10:54):
Zabka. I get it. And we havesome new people and thomassie
and Griffith and of course, SeanCanaan, but everyone else comes
over. And it's incredible. So Iguess that's why even the
clunkiness works because it hasso much of these people, these
players, essentially the storyshould have been refined a bit
more. But great cast. And we'velost some of these people. Some
(11:17):
of the crew, we've lostAppleton. We've lost Pat Marita,
and we've lost Jerry Weintraub, who kind of put a lot of this in
motion. And so rest in peace toall of you greats, we wouldn't
have so many great movieswithout them. And yeah, so I'm
very fond. And I'm also veryfond of our episode, our scene
by scene breakdown. So really, Iwas reluctant. You were telling
(11:40):
me like, hey, we can't do thatthird one was like, Yeah, I
don't know. I don't know. Andthen watching it again. And we
delved into it, and that wassomething else. It's really
good. And we should probably goback and enjoy it again
ourselves.
Sal Rodriguez (11:54):
I'm also reminded
Jason that the scene in the
movie when Martin Cove iswalking as John crease, all
digital, walking down thestreet, about to walk into the
dojo, dojo. Yep, that's rightover here, right over there.
Jason Connell (12:07):
I'm literally
down from it.
Sal Rodriguez (12:09):
I'm maybe one
mile. Maybe one more. Can
Jason Connell (12:11):
you do? Like
three quarters injected
crosswalk? Can you just reenactit's like a bag has ever bags is
kinda males. It's
Sal Rodriguez (12:18):
sort of like Bill
Bixby remember the end of the
Incredible Hulk, Bill Bixbyhitchhiking at the end? He kind
of had that look. Oh, like thatdejected wonder look,
Jason Connell (12:29):
unshaven Street.
Sal Rodriguez (12:30):
Yeah, I think
like a military coat and have a
military jacket on.
Jason Connell (12:34):
I don't know
about a military. You're
thinking of Rambo. Now you'regoing into first blade? isn't
alone, right. And then did he?
Increase? Yeah, survival knife.
Wrong movie. So you got cinema.
Nisha is getting crossed over?
Well, I said this earlier on.
And I'll end this episode withthis. We were in different
(12:56):
places, not just in our lives.
But I mean, physically. We didthe Karate Kid, the original
together in studio, which thenwe did the first two seasons of
Cobra Kai. And then we were on ahiatus because there was no
season three. And we were like,Okay, well, that shows on pause,
and then a pandemic hits. Andthen our first post, while in
(13:21):
the midst of pandemic recordingwas the Karate Kid. Part two, we
started to do remote recording.
We solved all those riddles. Andso we were both in Los Angeles,
but just doing it remotely. Andthen I left Los Angeles. And
this was our first one. Well,no, it wasn't. But it was our
first scene by scene breakdown.
I'm halfway across the country.
I was in Oklahoma visitingfamily. And we did this episode
(13:43):
there. And then we did the nextcredit. Well, we'll save that
one. So we've always been indifferent places when we're
doing the trilogy and the sceneby scene breakdown. How about
that?
Sal Rodriguez (13:56):
Interesting. Very
interesting. It's almost like it
was meant to be for some reason.
I don't know why. I don't knowhow you're meant to be. But
yeah, I don't know why it'smeant to be it was like it was
meant to be. It was well, you Ithink kind of the whole remote
podcast thing you like, I neverwould have considered that.
Personally. Yeah. You reallybrought that into my life. And
you've done a great job.
Jason Connell (14:17):
Thank you, sir.
Yeah, it forced me to thinkoutside the box. I don't want to
take full credit. But all thesenew apps and opportunities like
zoom and Riverside and ringer, all these companies were
launching because people weregoing remote not just for remote
working, but remote podcasters.
But yes, those tools are nicewhen you have just a random
(14:38):
guest on and you want to make iteasy for them. But when you're
recording all the time, werecord locally, and we use those
interfaces just to interact, right? And so it was really
gonna
Sal Rodriguez (14:48):
give away our
traits.
Jason Connell (14:51):
But it's key
allows us it sounds like we're
still in the same studio, butit's better because we have our
own individual tracks. So kudosto us But anyway, I hope our
fans enjoy the revisitrerelease, delve back into our
scene by scene breakdown of thecredit card part three. And the
fact that they're going to be inorder in April for you to do
(15:14):
deep deep dives, and pointthings out and Hey, tell us how
much you loved it. Please.
Sal Rodriguez (15:20):
Jason, can people
just do automatic or when people
are listening to their podcasts?
In this instance, let's talkCobra Kai, can they just like
listen to an episode, leave italone and then the next one will
start auto start of the nextstep. I
Jason Connell (15:32):
know that you can
do that with Apple podcast if
you click that feature withinyour own app, you can control
that yeah, you could just belike one to the next to the next
and next all the times you guysgot a
Sal Rodriguez (15:42):
person could just
a person could just like karate
kid karate get to Karate Kidthree Next Karate Kid just like
one after the other just nonstop
Jason Connell (15:50):
do it if they
wanted to. They could do why
not? I like let's do achallenge. Who does it? Who can
do it? I know one superfanabroad could do it. A keto con
ad.
Sal Rodriguez (16:02):
That would be
Yeah, keto con at that would be
an interesting challenge. Like atick tock challenge. Or you know
that the plank challenge, youknow that they keep raising the
bar on plank is like four hours, five hours, six hours, people
are planking for five, sixhours. What did you like? Most?
Yeah,
Jason Connell (16:17):
you can do like
five minutes.
Sal Rodriguez (16:18):
I'm good. You can
do five minute plank. Yeah.
Okay, I can only do two.
Jason Connell (16:21):
I believe I can
do five.
Sal Rodriguez (16:23):
I can't do five.
I will try five though. I'lltake that challenge. But you
know,
Jason Connell (16:28):
take it a few
months. See how long
Sal Rodriguez (16:30):
you can listen to
our show.
Jason Connell (16:31):
I like that I did
every episode. They're gonna
imitate us emulate us. Well, anyway, so we got to wrap it up.
Otherwise, we're gonna make thisas long as the scene by scene
breakdown. But thank you again.
So without further ado, pleaseenjoy
Sal Rodriguez (16:46):
the Karate Kid.
Part Three.
Jason Connell (16:49):
All right, Sal.
Here we are. Finally, finally, finally. Special episode of The
Karate Kid. Part Three.
Sal Rodriguez (17:01):
Yes. Would you
say that this is a trilogy,
which would you call at thispoint where we are would you
call this a trilogy?
Jason Connell (17:07):
I believe so.
Three films makes it a trilogy.
Sal Rodriguez (17:10):
Okay, so the fact
that they go into the Hilary
Swank and Jaden Smith world,we're not counting that yet.
Jason Connell (17:16):
No, one's a
remake. So that doesn't fall in
the children category and thefourth movie, I'm not sure what
that becomes. Because it wasn'ta reenactment or a recreation
because Mr. Miyagi did carryover.
Sal Rodriguez (17:28):
Hang on, Jason is
Daniel Russo at all in the one
with Hilary Swank
Jason Connell (17:33):
know The Next
Karate Kid now? He is not Wow.
Okay. All right. That's for afuture special episode. As we
break down The Next Karate Kid.
Of course, you'll have to seethe movie to sell.
Sal Rodriguez (17:44):
Oh, yes, for
sure. But I'm excited to be here
today for part three of thetrilogy.
Jason Connell (17:48):
And so as we
always do, we'd like to run down
the synopsis and the IMDB andRotten Tomatoes ratings and a
few things before we jump intothe heart of the podcast the
scene by scene beat by beatbreakdown of the entire film. So
here we go. So the synopsis onIMDb goes as such, ostracize
(18:10):
villain, John crease attempts togain revenge on Daniel Miyagi,
with the help of a Vietnam Warcomrade, the wealthy owner of a
toxic waste disposal business.
And now here's the ratings. Sothe Karate Kid the original on
IMDb. 7.2. The Karate Kid partwo 6.0
Sal Rodriguez (18:31):
It's not looking
good. A little tougher grade.
I'm gonna say 5.5
Jason Connell (18:36):
not far off. 5.2
Whoa. Nice. And now here are the
Rotten Tomatoes. The Karate Kid.
88% Bravo. The Karate Kid par240 2%. What? Yeah, big drop.
Sal Rodriguez (18:52):
Okay, I'm gonna
say 35% based on that.
Jason Connell (18:55):
15% What? Yeah,
ouch.
Sal Rodriguez (18:58):
I've never heard
of a movie. I think, Tommy we
suppose the room scores better,right?
Jason Connell (19:03):
That is a rotten
tomato. All right. So moving
along. We knew that this was notthe strongest of the trilogy.
Let's just call it what it is.
Sal Rodriguez (19:13):
Okay, look, I
knew that. But I didn't read
much about it in advance, because I didn't want it to
affect the way that I view themovie. I want to view the movie
with a pure and clean mind.
Jason Connell (19:25):
Absolutely. I
know. We went over this on the
other special episodes. But thisparticular film, I saw it on HBO
when I was 1819 years old. And Iremember being very
disappointed, loving the KarateKid enjoying the Karate Kid part
two. And then just at the agethat I'm like, wait, I'm just
kind of over this right now. Itreally bugged me after that.
(19:46):
I've never watched it againuntil last year. I revisited it
and thought wow, there's someinteresting things in there. So
I've rewatched it since for thisepisode tonight and I'm excited
to talk about it but it wasn'tone that I saw the time could
recite and knew all the ins andouts of and I know you didn't
have much familiarity with iteither.
Sal Rodriguez (20:05):
No, you know, the
truth is when this movie came
out, what was it? 89? Yeah, yeah, I was running the streets.
I'm I'm not I'm not proud of it.
But I was running the streetswhen this movie came out. But
she
Jason Connell (20:15):
had said on a
previous episode that you've
been going to one of your movietheaters there and seeing two
movies at once. Sometimes yourcinema nasia may kick in. Maybe
you did see it and loved it. Youknow
Sal Rodriguez (20:23):
what, now that
you mentioned my cinema in Asia,
it is entirely possible I didsee this movie. But I yeah, I
forgot. I forgot. I have norecollection of
Jason Connell (20:31):
Terry Silva for
Halloween once.
Sal Rodriguez (20:35):
I have no memory
of seeing this movie, whereas I
have memories of Karate Kid oneand two. Now.
Jason Connell (20:40):
Fair enough. Fair
enough. I was never Mike Barnes
for Halloween. I'll just saythat right now. All right. So
the movie was released June30 1989, Columbia Pictures, and
I'll just give you the US gross.
I wanted to make a guess. Now, Iwon't even do that to you. 39
million, which in context, thefirst two movies made, I think
over 100. So it was coming upthe wave of the first two, which
(21:03):
did very well. The first onecame out in 84. And the second
one came out in 86. So threeyears later, here comes the
trilogy. And it you know, madesome money, but not very good
ratings wasn't very wellremembered. And then that was
the end of this particularfranchise with Daniel and
Miyagi. What was the budget?
(21:25):
Well, I usually have thatinformation. So and honestly, I
could not find it on IMDb orIMDb Pro. So I just had the
gross, which was less than theother two movies. So I don't
know, we'd be just guessing ifsomeone out there knows, feel
free to contact us on socialmedia.
Sal Rodriguez (21:40):
With all the
numbers we do have at our
disposal with the first twomovies and with this information
about the gross sales, we canprobably take a guess at what
the budget was.
Jason Connell (21:50):
I'd say 10 to 12
million.
Sal Rodriguez (21:53):
Okay. All right.
I'll take it.
Jason Connell (21:55):
So now we're
jumping into who came back
because a lot of trilogies work, usually because they didn't just
re cast everybody, or it wasdifferent director or different
writer. No, that was not thecase for this movie. You had
Jerry Weintraub still producingJohn G. Appleton still
directing. Robert Mark Kaman wasthe writer who had written all
(22:16):
of the karate kids. Bill Conticomposed it as he did the other
two films. He composed itbeautifully. And you had Pat
Marita ruff Maggio. RandyHeller, Pat E. Johnson, and
Martin Cove all come back tothis movie. Now one little
tidbit also is the fact that itwas nominated for five Razzie
(22:40):
Awards. And so I'm sure you knowwhat a Razzie is?
Sal Rodriguez (22:44):
Oh, yeah.
Nowadays, you could probablypublicly accept a Razzie and you
know, do it tongue in cheek, butback then. Right? I don't think
it was an honor.
Jason Connell (22:52):
No. And I don't
want to glorify that either.
We're huge fans of thefranchise, obviously. And again,
it's the weak link and thearmor. And it's fine. It is what
it is. But there's a lot morethere to like, than I realized,
and that's what we're gonna getinto. But I figured I'd just
throw it out there because it isfactually accurate.
Sal Rodriguez (23:11):
And I gotta hand
it to Patti Johnson. To me at
this point, Patty Johnson islike a pillar with these movies.
Jason Connell (23:17):
Absolutely. I
mean, he only had a small role
in the second one, as did MartinCove. And Randy Heller wasn't
even in the second movie. So itwas nice to bring her back,
albeit small role. And it wascool to see Johnson come back
and obviously since a crease, always a pleasure to have him on
the big screen. So anything elseyou want to get into Sal before
(23:38):
we jump into the movie?
Sal Rodriguez (23:40):
No, we're gonna
get right into the montage of
the first movie in the secondmovie that takes place in the
third movie. It's a doublefeature montage. In the third
movie.
Jason Connell (23:49):
So true. And we
talked about this on the Karate
Kid part two, how the moviestarts with this montage, which
at the time just blew me awayseeing that again going man,
Sal, I haven't seen that donevery often, except for Rocky
two. And some of the Rockymovies they would show the fight
that into the movie prior. Andthen when I set the movie up
that way, which I found to beinteresting, because Appleton
(24:10):
directed rocky won the Oscar. Healso directed rocky five so he
kind of had put that style inmotion, which is interesting
that this movie does it too. Sotrue to form we have a montage
to start Karate Kid part three, which is great, you have Mr.
Miyagi and Daniel Russo firstmeeting, you have trimming of
the bonza eyes the infamousheadband, the Cobra Kai dojo,
(24:33):
Miyagi meets crease than the allValley karate championship
style. This is where all roadslead to in this particular film.
And now we're at the valleykarate championship. Johnny
verse Daniel and Sal, I heardsomething I had not heard or
remembered until the viewing ofthis film. And that's when
(24:54):
crease is cleaning Johnny'sbloody nose. You hear a fan yell
at Johnny, you're a cream paHave you ever heard of before?
Sal Rodriguez (25:03):
No, no, I haven't
heard that one. So good.
Jason Connell (25:06):
It's there clear
as day. Just listen to it. It's
in the first movie. It was alsoin the second because the second
had a montage from the first. Soit's always been there. But it
hit me this time and I crackedup because some extra has had a
fun time with that. Or whoknows, maybe it was the
director. I'm not sure but Iloved it. And then we get the
(25:27):
Crane Kick. And that leads tothe assault in the parking lot.
Miyagi defeats crease. And thenas that ends, then we start to
kind of segue into the thirdmovie. I don't know if you
remember the SAL but Miyagi sayshis line to Daniel, a person
would know forgiveness and heartliving worse punishment than
death. And that was really niceto us. That is the end point.
(25:52):
And then what do we see? As wesee the first glimpses of Karate
Kid Part Three non montage?
Sal Rodriguez (25:59):
Well, that would
be crease walking down the
street alone, dejected, right.
This is when the non montageportion begins. One thing I
think is interesting right offthe bat, is how much the
exterior of the dojo had changedin just a few months, right?
What what I'm down is whathappened, what happened to this
place? And by the way, that wasLankershim right near the corner
(26:20):
of Magnolia. You can see theMagnolia so I
Jason Connell (26:23):
saw magnolia.
Absolutely. I saw that.
Sal Rodriguez (26:26):
And the funny
thing is creases there alone
going into the dojo, and Ireally liked the exterior of the
dojo as far as how much itchanged. Did you notice that
that little boy standing outsidethe dojo, they make eye contact?
See, this gives me greaterappreciation, just like you
mentioned, the creampuff yellout at the tournament, when you
(26:47):
watch a movie more than once youget these little nuggets that
you miss. So I'm telling you, Ihave a greater appreciation for
watching things again,
Jason Connell (26:54):
I didn't live in
LA at that point in time, but
Sal, you could speak to it. I'msure there were neighborhoods
and areas that just looked alittle more decayed. He comes
in, there's mail that has beenthrown through the chute. He's
picking it up. He's just kind ofchecked out at this point in
time. And so I like the firstthing we see when he gets in the
dojo, besides the male on theground, was the classic Soldier
(27:15):
of Fortune photo that we've seenso often. And Cobra Kai and
Karate Kid, and what does it sayon that photo?
Sal Rodriguez (27:23):
Well, it says
that he's the army karate
champion, and I gotta tell youfor the first time and this
comes from multiple viewings, Ihad a problem with that photo.
You know why? Because it says aUS Army karate champion, right?
But why isn't he in the ghee?
Why is he in his fatigues?
Jason Connell (27:40):
It is weird that
they slap that on there 1972 72
Crown Champion, but I'm withyou. It didn't seem very
accurate seemed like he wouldhave been in a GI Absolutely.
But it's a great photononetheless. Of him of Martin
Kovar since a crease. And thenwe have a phone call from Allah
Valley and who's on therecording.
Sal Rodriguez (28:00):
Now this I was
excited to hear it. It's Pat e
Johnson calling from the allValley and he says he's dropping
Cobra Kai from membership rulesor membership ranks I couldn't
tell it what he said haven't
Jason Connell (28:11):
made any
payments. So they they're not in
the next tournament. They hadn'treally done anything else wrong.
They just hadn't made anypayments. All that mail is piled
up. They've not been in touchwith anybody since losing. I
think Johnson even says I'msorry to hear you lost all of
your students. Oh, so you heardabout what happened in the
parking lot. I mean, let's goback in time Pat Johnson saw
(28:32):
since a crease come out and howmad he was it was right there
when all that was taking place.
And so they are out of thetournament.
Sal Rodriguez (28:39):
Wait a second
Jason. So you're telling me that
not paying your your dues, rightgets you booted but fighting in
the parking lot doesn't
Jason Connell (28:48):
I'm not sure he
saw exactly what happened. But
he did hear the studentslaughed. He did see crease
coming out and barking at peopleI was like, Oh, that guy but I
don't know if he continued tosee what took place a couple of
minutes later. Okay. Yeah, because of all Valley saw that
him choking out Johnny andtrying to kill him. You would
think that since a crease wouldbe ousted, but not necessarily
Cobra Kai, but if he is CobraKai, then yes, that's the reason
(29:11):
for expulsion. So Chris looksdown on that. Right. It hasn't
done anything kind of likeJohnny looked in Cobra Kai when
he wasn't paying his bills. Hewas trying to get students
there. He all he had it wasMiguel, very similar energy to
objectiveness drinking all thetime. I mean, I'm sure Johnny
was channeling some of that ornot Johnny himself but the show
(29:32):
was channeling some of thiscreased objectiveness
Sal Rodriguez (29:35):
not to mention he
there's an answering machine
message right after Pat Johnson.
From Pacific Bell. I don't evenknow there's no more Pacific
Bell in Los Angeles. I don'tthink so. Yeah. Pacific Bell
threatening to disconnect thephone line. And then to add
insult to injury. What was hesees a newspaper clipping of
Daniel in the newspaper? Oh,god. Yeah,
Jason Connell (29:56):
that's so great.
It says mystery dojo was singlestudent defames Cobra Kai, wow,
that was a photo of macho and Ibelieve Miyagi was on it. And so
Sal, I zoomed in to read some ofthe text because I was like, how
accurate were they in the story?
Great headline. And this is thenext sentence. residents feel
(30:22):
that they have been takenadvantage of ever since the tax
laws governing their additionalland holdings were reviewed and
increased.
Sal Rodriguez (30:30):
Hmm. Yeah. Yeah,
it
Jason Connell (30:32):
was some old
tech, some old article. And they
just said, I leave it no one'sgonna see that sound. They
didn't really write a greatarticle. I was disappointed by
that.
Sal Rodriguez (30:42):
No, no, no, I,
you know, now I would expect
them to write an entire articleback then, you know, that was a
different era. You, I guess yougotta let a lot of stuff a roll.
You know, it's like, well, in89, a
Jason Connell (30:55):
lot of these plot
lines, they did the same thing.
And I will get into that.
Sal Rodriguez (30:58):
No, but I believe
in writing a full on full on
Article,
Jason Connell (31:02):
they're only
thinking about the big screen
and in the little scrim and onthe big screen, you probably
couldn't see it. But you know,on a monitor, I zoomed in. I was
like, what? They didn't expectit to go on all these other
devices. So now we're at FrankLloyd Wright's infamous Enos
house, which is just it'sstunning. So I mean, you've seen
it. And Blade Runner. It's theMayan revival home. It's just
(31:25):
gorgeous. And I've gone on hikesto Griffith Park, right there by
the foot of it so you can getreally close and it's just such
an impressive sight. So props onlocation. Well done to make this
Terry Silver's home, played byThomas in Griffith. So Chris
shows up at the doorstep of thisgorgeous house. And what happens
Sal Rodriguez (31:47):
yeah, this house
is is a fortress when you see it
from the outside. I mean, itlooks it's one of these places
that says, Don't come anywherenear here. It reeks of power.
And crease is led in by abutler, an actual an actual
Butler, who has a butler, TerrySilver has a butler.
Jason Connell (32:05):
And Chris calls
him the boss. Yeah, yeah.
Sal Rodriguez (32:08):
And what is Terry
silver doing? What what does he
happen to be doing when Chrisarrives? Is that? Is that a
coincidence? Do you think heknew Chris was coming?
Jason Connell (32:16):
No, that's who
Terry silver is. He's practicing
karate taking out two guys, twopupils who sparring. He's
actually quite good at martialarts. I would give him total
credit. He's super tall. He'slanky, his kicks are fabulous.
And boom, there's crease. Andonce you say,
Sal Rodriguez (32:36):
he says, You're
telegraphing that we'll kick,
because let me tell yousomething. Thomas. Ian Griffith
is delivering some great kicks.
And as it turns out, he has abackground in Taekwondo. He has
a fantastic martial artist. Hehas great moves. And how about
these guys that he's sparringwith? That what they're just
gonna get paid to get their asskicked is what's happening here.
Jason Connell (32:55):
Well, when you
have money like Tara Silva, he
kind of reminds me of a akin toSteven Seagal. Oh, yeah, it's
got the hair. The look, I'm surethey were casting for Steven
Seagal ask us what they weregoing for. Although this came
out when Seagal was I guess hehad made his first movie by then
above the law. But that wasdefinitely the look they were
(33:16):
going for. And he nailed that.
Sal Rodriguez (33:18):
And he has been
quoted as saying he's not an
actor who got into martial arts.
He is a martial artist whobecame an actor, right? And so
as a goal. Oh, yeah, to be fair, yes, definitely. That moment
when Terry first sees crease, and we see what I believe is the
only genuine smile withaffection. That is the only
moment we will see Terry Silvabe a real person in that moment
Jason Connell (33:44):
when he's like
Johnny. Yep, right there. And we
learn that he's into nucularwaste. And I love he has this
line that I'm lucky I make onedeal a year without getting
indicted. So this guy has donesome shady things. It's paid
off. And he's just a diabolicalguy. And I don't even know what
motivates him. But power andgreed as you just said,
(34:07):
Absolutely do Jason did
Sal Rodriguez (34:09):
you notice
Terry's ghee it was not cotton.
It was like a polyester ghee?
Yeah,
Jason Connell (34:16):
it looks sharp on
him.
Sal Rodriguez (34:17):
Is that something
martial artist wears a polyester
ghee? I've only seen the cottonones.
Jason Connell (34:21):
Yeah, I'm not
sure tears ever had a special
ghee made for him. And we alsolearned that he bought Cobra Kai
for crease who saved his lifemore than a few times in the
war. I never do that. Wow. Okay.
No mention of him in the firsttwo movies and no representation
of him at the All Valley inwhich Daniel best Johnny?
Sal Rodriguez (34:46):
Yes. So really,
Terry Silva is such a pivotal
character in this movie, but hedid come out of nowhere.
Jason Connell (34:53):
Yeah, I guess
we're supposed to believe he was
there the whole time. Makingdeals pulling the strings
funding Chris He's in Cobra Kai,but hey now here he really is so
Okay, much like a lot of thingsin this movie. There's some iros
or some over the top acting. Andyeah, Terry Silva is a big part
of that.
Sal Rodriguez (35:12):
But this shows
how close they are because not
only do they have this historyof both serving in Nam crease
opens up vulnerable, says toTerry, I'm broke, and I'm going
nowhere. And what does Terrysay? Talk about a great friend.
How many friends will tell youthis? You're wrong. You're going
to Tahiti, and he sends Chris onan all expense paid trip to
(35:34):
Tahiti.
Jason Connell (35:35):
Amazing. Yeah,
Chris shows up to say, here's
the keys. I'm done. I'll giveyou the background later in his
dejected he's pulling a Johnnyfrom Cobra Kai season two
episode 10. He's out. But unlikeJohnny, Chris has a super rich
friend. And yes, he sends him toTahiti. He needs to get his
batteries recharged. Terry'sgonna move creases problems,
(35:58):
which is Miyagi and losing thestudents and everything else up
to his number one thing to focuson because that guy has time for
it. What a POW indeed. Sothey're off to LAX. And I like
this scene, or he's dropping himoff. And I think he's driving a
Rolls Royce. And he's droppinghim off. Am I right on that
side? Well,
Sal Rodriguez (36:18):
specifically a
1978. Convertible Rolls Royce. I
believe that would be pronouncedCornish because it's CLR and
ichp. Cornish. So I think it's aRolls Royce Corniche,
Jason Connell (36:30):
very good looking
car. And as he's dropping, Chris
off, who do we see? Just comeright out the doors just a
moment later,
Sal Rodriguez (36:40):
as Chris is
walking into the airport, Daniel
and Mr. Miyagi are walking out?
I mean, I don't know how theydidn't see each other.
Jason Connell (36:48):
Having just come
back from Okinawa that might
have been hilarious. Had theyhad an encounter right there in
front of lax, that would havebeen
Sal Rodriguez (36:55):
outstanding,
there would have been no movie
that would have been it.
Jason Connell (36:58):
So now we cut to
the South Seas, and it's under
construction. And we also learnwhat Sal?
Sal Rodriguez (37:04):
Well, one thing
that jumped out at me having
grown up in Los Angeles, specifically the San Fernando
Valley, we hear power 106 JayThomas, DJ. And what I was
uncertain of is, was thatsomeone actually playing his
voice from their car? Or wasthat part of the soundtrack of
the movie, I don't know.
Jason Connell (37:25):
I'm not sure,
let's say pulled up in the taxi
Miyagi, and Daniel took a cab toSouth Seas. Could have been
that. But we learned though, that it has been sold, which was
news to me, because I thought, well, maybe there's this chance
that Miyagi owns it. And thatway he could afford the life
that he has the house, he hasthe cars he has, but turns out
(37:46):
it was just a job because theold lady from South Seas comes
out. And she's going on and onabout Didn't I tell ya, he's
gonna sell the place, he's gonnado this and Miyagi shaking his
head. So we've learned thatMiyagi is now out of a job. And
he's been overseas for the lastmonth or so. And it took a
bigger financial crunch than Iever realized. Well, that
Sal Rodriguez (38:07):
is one thing that
I definitely was thinking a lot
throughout this movie actuallywas. I want to see a timeline.
How long were they in Okinawa?
That I'd like to know becausethey came back and they're
turning their apartment into thereceita. Hills condominiums.
Jason Connell (38:24):
Yeah, I would say
they were there for a month,
maybe two. I mean, they weren'tthere that long. And Sato was
ready to fight like three daysand that whole thing was playing
out in like a week, but youassume that they stayed because
things had really lightened andit was a good environment. And
we also learn a few beats fromnow that he helped build up a
home and help fund that so thatreally cost me Auggie, some
(38:47):
money. So I'd say you know, amonth, maybe two, just guessing?
Sal Rodriguez (38:53):
Well, there's
literally no regard for safety.
We're talking like debrisfalling off the roof. As they're
talking to their neighbor.
They're at the sidewalk. Andshe's filling them in on what's
going on. I think I was justkind of flabbergasted that they
came back to this. And I was
Jason Connell (39:08):
too sad to say,
but you and I both can tell the
audience that South Seas which Iused to call the Seven Seas is
alive and well. On receita. It'sperfect, untouched. It may have
been bought and sold a fewtimes, but it looks exactly the
same. So that's the best newsabout it. It's not gone like Mr.
Miyagi, his house that I'm sadto say, was demolished. So it's
(39:31):
kind of a sad scene, Miyagi istaking out the trees because he
had the little workshop there towhere him and Daniel met. But
he's on the phone with Daniel'smother telling her that the room
is finished, and that Daniel canstay there no problem. But
however, that brings this upselland karate kid to they just
started the room addition.
Remember when the mailman showedup, and then they whisked off to
(39:52):
Okinawa so that he hires someguys to come in and knock out
Daniel's room and get it alldone because they have literally
not been in the state. To finishthem,
Sal Rodriguez (40:01):
well see, that's
what I mean is I want to see a
timeline. How long are they inOkinawa? And if they were in
Okinawa long enough to take careof business in Okinawa, but then
have a crew come and finish theroom at Mr. Miyagi his house?
Who was that crew? And how longdid it take them? I really, I
think I really at this point, after watching this movie, I'm
going to try to create my owntimeline as a frame of
(40:24):
reference, because I want toknow how things how long things
took
Jason Connell (40:27):
with without a
timeline, the logic ideas laid
out, it makes no sense if theywere going to do it. Mr. Miyagi
is very hands on him and Danieldidn't build it. So maybe
someone did come in and do it,but are maybe it's just a movie
thing. Hey, that's done. We moveright on. I think this movie has
a
Sal Rodriguez (40:43):
lot of those
assumptions. Okay. All right.
Well, you just gotta roll withit.
Jason Connell (40:46):
So then Daniel's
mother is with Uncle Louie. And
tell me what's going on withUncle Louie because it's a
little over the top Sal.
Sal Rodriguez (40:54):
Daniel's mother
is on the phone with Daniel
who's in receita. And right overher right shoulder is Uncle
Louie with emphysema, laying inthe bed, choking gagging by the
way. It especially stands outbecause of the era that we're in
today. But this guy is coughingand coughing without covering
his mouth. There was no coveringof the mouth whatsoever. And
(41:15):
he's hacking away. So she'sthere taking care of Uncle Louie
as he's sick with emphysema. Andthat's it. We don't see her
again.
Jason Connell (41:22):
No, I'm sad to
say I'm happy that she was on
screen. It was her firstappearance in The Karate Kid
since the original. But it wasnice when she came back to Cobra
Kai the show. And Louie Jr. wasthere. So that was kind of nice.
So that must have been hisfather who's very sick that
she's caring for. So nice littletie in there. But we don't know
(41:42):
Louie at all. He's grabbing abell. He's shaking. And he's
kind of a bit over the top
Sal Rodriguez (41:47):
the bell? Oh,
that made me very angry.
Jason Connell (41:50):
So we also learn
on this phone call that Daniels
go into college. Now. You'retalking about a timeline. And
yeah, please make sense of thisto me. So on the Karate Kid one
as they moved up from NewJersey, I'm assuming now that
Daniel was a senior. And so ifhe was a senior, then the first
summer would have been boom,Okinawa. He's coming back here.
(42:13):
And he's going to college.
Right? Okay, I can buy that. Ican buy that. But Sal, is he
over? 18?
Sal Rodriguez (42:23):
I thought about
that because he's over
Jason Connell (42:24):
18 you're not
competing in the under 18 All
Valley karate tournament.
Sal Rodriguez (42:30):
That's what I
mean by the timeline. Not only
do we not see a high schoolgraduation, not only do we not
see his room being built atMiyagi his house, but yeah, he's
he's an adult now, isn't he?
Jason Connell (42:39):
Then this throws
it off even more, we saw him get
his driver's license in theKarate Kid. So then that would
have been 16, presumably. So heprobably is under 18 In some
respects, and then maybe overand others. And I think there's
a lot of nuance there. And youcan kind of follow that any way
(43:00):
you want. But, yeah, some thingsdon't add up. But again, here we
are Karate Kid three as a whole.
Some of it just never adds up.
Alright, so we also learn onthis incredible call with all
this exposition. What happens toKimiko
Sal Rodriguez (43:13):
Oh, okay, that
upset me. And the reason that
upset me is because I loveKarate Kid. In fact, this is
where Jason and I diverge. Heprefers the Karate Kid. I prefer
the Karate Kid to I loved theKarate Kid to so much I loved
Kumiko I love their, their teaceremony to me one of the most
romantic images ever captured onfilm, that tea ceremony. And you
(43:37):
know what, as far as I'mconcerned, they just kind of
threw her under the bus. She'sgone. Daniel says that she took
a dance job in Tokyo. What?
Okay,
Jason Connell (43:48):
well, I wouldn't
say they threw her under the
bus. I would say that they threwAli under the bus. She wrecked
the car. She ran off with thisguy from UCLA. I mean, that's
the one someone under the bus.
Well, it gave Kimiko they lether chase her dream.
Sal Rodriguez (44:03):
Okay, let me just
say this for the record. How
disappointed I was when Danieland Miyagi come back to Los
Angeles without UTA and withoutKumiko. Okay, I said it. We're
done.
Jason Connell (44:16):
Yeah, you did.
You did. In fact, one might say,Why come back?
Sal Rodriguez (44:20):
Yeah, for what?
Your mom's not even there.
Jason Connell (44:22):
Miyagi, helped
build up a home, spent money on
set home. He's older in life.
Here's one of the first loves ofhis life. Hey, you're in
paradise. It always cracked meup on the show last if you ever
watched last. Here's all thesehot people and a secluded place
and they're dying to get back totheir lives. And meanwhile take
(44:43):
a step back and just enjoy whereyou are. Take that in. You are
in paradise. So Miyagi Yeah, Ishould have stayed. And listen,
Daniel can be with Kumiko andexplore Tokyo for a year or go
to school abroad or justanything but they didn't They
came back, so we could makeKarate Kid.
Sal Rodriguez (45:05):
That was why
that's the big why. Alright, so
Jason Connell (45:08):
we've learned
that Miyagi is low on money and
the reason why and now he has nojob. And so the first thing that
popped in my mind was sell someof those classic cars. Right? I
mean, you got a pretty pennythere. He's got a few of them. I
know he gave one to Daniel. Butthere's a few more lined up as
far as we know,
Sal Rodriguez (45:24):
as a collector,
the first thought is not sell
your collection. That's not thefirst thought.
Jason Connell (45:27):
Well, and then
here's typical Daniel. He's
young, he gets an idea. And he'soff to visit a realtor because
he threw the idea out thereabout chasing your dream and Mr.
Miyagi always wanted to have hisown little Banzai store shop.
And so Daniels wheels arespinning. And he's gone off to
visit a realtor to be continued.
Sal Rodriguez (45:50):
Well, this shows
Daniel's heart. I mean, look,
look where he's at. Daniel issacrificing his money for his
college education to help hissensei achieve his dream
Jason Connell (46:02):
totally. But
without thinking it through at
all I'm saying hearts in theright place with Daniel always.
Sometimes the timing. Hismethods aren't always on point.
Sal Rodriguez (46:14):
Well, later on,
he really kicks his own ass
about making errors. We're gonnasee more of that.
Jason Connell (46:20):
Yes. I think this
trend continues into Cobra Kai.
But that's just the characterDaniel is.
Sal Rodriguez (46:26):
He's imperfect.
He's the imperfect hero, as weall are, and
Jason Connell (46:30):
we love him. So
now we learn that Silva has
bought 20 Cobra Kai locations.
Sal, where are these? This wasamazing to hear. I'm elated.
Just like we've talked about onprevious episodes. Cobra Kai
Dojo is everywhere. Someonecould probably do that now and
make a mint.
Sal Rodriguez (46:52):
Well, that is a
lot of locations. Did he say in
the San Fernando Valley? Yes, hedid 20 locations in the valley,
which the valley end to end. Andthis is not counting the hills,
but we're talking the valleyitself. So from the foothills in
12 square miles, the valley's 12to 15 square miles. So when in a
12 to 15 square mile area, yougot 20 locations. That's pretty
(47:14):
impressive. Current Starbucks, probably with Cobra Kai dojos.
At one time,
Jason Connell (47:19):
we also learn the
plan for Daniel, his master
plan. And he goes a little Dr.
Evil hear about the bloodyknuckles because he's calling
crease increases, of course inthe middle of massage. And he's
like, oh, yeah, one more thing.
Make his knuckles bleed, right.
And he stands up and he gives usbig scream. It's like it's just
(47:39):
so diabolical. It's just so overthe top, if you will.
Sal Rodriguez (47:45):
I have to tell
you this Jason and I have to
fess up. When you and I firststarted recording, let's talk
Cobra Kai and we're on seasonone, then we're on season two. I
still hadn't seen Karate Kidthree. And so I did not know how
evil crease actually was. Sowhen crease appears in Cobra
Kai, I was willing to give thema chance. Well, you know what? I
(48:08):
was stupid. Crease is evil. Andin this movie, you really see
how evil creases?
Jason Connell (48:15):
Absolutely. So
Terry's plan is to really put
one over on Miyagi and Daniel,to get him to fight in the
valley to hurt him emotionallyphysically, wear him down, hurt
Mr. Miyagi by hurting Daniel.
And then he's going to do thisby kind of winning him over. So
so some of this involves pickinga certain car to drive and
(48:40):
certain clothes to wear, becauseas Terry silver walks around his
house, besides the butler, he'sgot like an assistant. He's got
like a number one. He's got allthese people following him and
just doing things.
Sal Rodriguez (48:52):
Yeah. And it also
shows us that these are kind of
his his minions. These are hisaccomplices. I mean, they know
what's happening. He is creatingthis persona, almost like a spy.
He wants to drive a little cheapcar, you know, he normally has a
Rolls Royce. He wants a cheapcar. He wants clothes that make
them look downtrodden or humbledor average. Right? Yeah. And the
(49:14):
staff is aware of this. Whatkind of staff is this? Well, I
Jason Connell (49:17):
the he pays him
very well. And honestly, you
watch the exchanges with them, and he treats him very well. So
they're happy they live in thisincredible home, and they take
care of him. And the rusecontinues, here's this guy doing
some illegal things happy he'snot getting indicted. And now
he's put his focus on to ourpoor Miyagi and Daniel, which is
(49:39):
terrible. So Terry, as always,is going somewhere, and they're
giving him his paper ormagazine. I'm sorry, here's the
magazines you requested sir. Andbut he had just chosen the car
that would be best for this rusewith Daniel, which was what?
Sal Rodriguez (49:52):
That is a little
blue truck. And it's not a
convertible. It looks like thetop was actually chopped. Yeah,
it's a cool truck. It is. It'sit's cool. You know I would
drive it for fun. 1972 Fordcourier.
Jason Connell (50:05):
Nice. So he gets
in his car opens up the
magazines. And of course, it'slike a fighting magazine, a
karate magazine. And he scrollsthrough it until he sees karate
is bad boy, tournament terror.
And who is that? Sal?
Sal Rodriguez (50:23):
That is Mike
Barnes play by actor, Sean
Canaan. And here's a little bitof cool trivia about Sean
Canaan. After this movie, he wasin a television show called The
Outsiders based on the book.
Well, who was in the movie TheOutsiders before the Karate Kid,
Mr. Ralph Macho? Yeah.
(50:45):
Interesting. Interestingparallel.
Jason Connell (50:48):
And they filmed
that movie where so?
Sal Rodriguez (50:51):
Tulsa, Oklahoma,
Jason Connell (50:53):
and who directed
it?
Sal Rodriguez (50:56):
Was it John G?
elvetham.
Jason Connell (50:58):
Francis Ford
Coppola.
Sal Rodriguez (51:03):
I've heard of
that guy,
Jason Connell (51:04):
all rows come
back to the outsiders. So now we
have Daniel and Sal, he's got alease. So here's a 17 year old,
maybe 18 year old, he can godown to the local realtor and
get himself a lease. I love it.
That's cool. I'll buy it. It's89. Why not? And what is the
lease exactly for sale?
Sal Rodriguez (51:25):
Well, you know,
now that you mentioned adjacent,
I'm thinking by now in thisworld. Daniel should be an
emancipated minor by this point, right? I mean, really, he's,
he's just living his life. Imean, his mom's taking care of
some uncle with emphysema. Imean, really, Daniel has no
parents really, during theduring this time. And then and
that's why that's why therelationship though, with Miyagi
(51:46):
is is extra special, because hefills multiple roles. But yeah,
he went out and got a lease acommercial lease, and presents
it to Mr. Miyagi. And he says,May all your dreams come true,
so very special. It really is.
Daniel is a giving generousperson and he wants to reward
his Sensei, with his lifelongdream of having his own bonsai
store.
Jason Connell (52:09):
It's true. But
again, Daniel doesn't really
think things out. He floppeddown a little bit of money. I
mean, how much is college 99 Sohe spent his college money and
he got a one month deposit, twomonths rent, and maybe just
enough leftover, do somerenovations. So we're not even
talking about how much moneythat are college. And I
(52:32):
understand his point. I thoughtit was great that he's like,
Hey, college, I gotta be intoit. I could just be wasting my
time. So I want to help you. Butthis was just a nugget. This
wasn't like, I got a thatspread. And I own this thing.
It's like, I gotta get twomonths. We got two months to go
on there and kick butt. Andthat's great. So the stakes are
high. You know, they gotta makethis thing work. So we're super
(52:54):
excited to show Mr. Miyagi. Sothey leave dinner because Miyagi
had made some fish. Leave thefish. It's already dead. Let's
go. They just drive off.
Sal Rodriguez (53:03):
Let me tell you
this. Jason, when we open on
that scene, and Miyagi isgrilling that fish over coals. I
was thinking, I'd like to trythat. I bet you that's
delicious.
Jason Connell (53:13):
Yeah, I was
disappointed. They left dinner.
Sal Rodriguez (53:15):
A Miyagi freshly
caught fish dinner. Yup, yes,
please
Jason Connell (53:20):
sign me up. So So
where are they go? It blew my
mind when I was watching this.
Because again, I watched it lastyear, I thought, Wow, maybe. And
then this week, I'm watching itand taking notes and really
doing my due diligence. So it'sat 135, North Avenue, 50 and Los
Angeles, California. Now, I usedto live in a house of which you
(53:41):
visited for some outdoor moviescreenings, and Mount
Washington, which is reallyclose to Highland Park and Eagle
Rock. Well, this location, youwould pass on the way to my
house if you came via the 134take Figaro to Avenue 50. So if
you took that route to come tomy house, you would have driven
(54:02):
right by Mr. Miyagi these littletrees.
Sal Rodriguez (54:07):
And for those who
are unaware, as far as the
landscape of Los Angeles, wouldyou say Jason that would be
considered east of downtown LA?
Yes.
Jason Connell (54:16):
It's like a 10
minute drive to downtown Los
Angeles from where I used tolive. It's also very close to
Pasadena, South Pasadena. All ofthat and you sneak around the
back side and go to GriffithPark and Silver Lake and most
Felice so yeah, it's rightthere. I had no idea for the
four years I owned and lived inthat house that Mr. Miyagi is
spot was right there. Now, it'snot the same building. I should
(54:39):
say that, but there it wasreally cool. But in 89 or 88,
when they filmed this, it was avery different area much
rougher.
Sal Rodriguez (54:49):
It's experienced.
The gentrification right alongwith many parts of Los Angeles
has been gentrified and thebuilding I understand is torn
down.
Jason Connell (54:57):
Yes. So now we go
inside. Daniel is running around
bouncer and it really remindedme of Steve Martin in the
bathroom scene and the jerk. Idon't know if you remember that
movie or not the Carl Reinerclassic movie where Jackie
Mason's working at the gasstation, you hired the jerk
Steve Martin, and he's, he'sgonna let him live there and
he's running around going, Wow,I can live in the restroom. This
(55:20):
is great. I put bookcases overhere and he's running around.
Everything's fantastic. That isdefinitely Daniel on the scene.
He's overselling it because he'sso excited. Daniel gets really
excited about things and really,he's kind of manic. And and I
love Daniel, but he has thesesuper highs, and he's incredible
lows. And this movie inparticular, he's just all over
(55:41):
the place.
Sal Rodriguez (55:42):
Jason, would you
say that this was the beginning
of Daniel Russo automotivesalesman?
Jason Connell (55:48):
Absolutely.
Because He is a born salesman.
Sal Rodriguez (55:52):
He's selling me
on a place that's full of dust
and cobwebs hanging down. AndI'm telling you, he's so
excited. I'm looking at thisplace going. Yeah, you know
what? I think he's right. Soyeah, he's definitely a good
salesman,
Jason Connell (56:04):
I back to Daniel
rushing into things. Love it. He
did it. He loves Mr. Miyagi. ButMr. Miyagi lives in a very cool
place.
Sal Rodriguez (56:12):
Oh, yeah.
Especially the things that hedid to improve it. Sure.
Jason Connell (56:17):
It's like your
museum. Well, Mr. Miyagi, also
could have flipped a switch, andjust made Mr. Miyagi little
trees at his house. And hiscourtyard, I know that it's not
where the movie went. But Ithink I would have really
tighten my belt, and maybe donethings a little bit smarter. But
hey, this is Karate Kid threewe're talking about.
Sal Rodriguez (56:38):
So you're saying
you would have just had a
backyard business because his
Jason Connell (56:41):
place was so
unconventional. I think it could
have worked. I know it was verytaboo. Back in the day, you got
to have an office, you got tohave specific bells got install
your phone line, and I get it.
No one wants to have a homebusiness. This wasn't 2020 or
everyone's working at home, Iget that. But his was unique.
And they probably could havemade it work. In fact, a lot of
(57:01):
the stuff they're doing there, they're having things taken
there. There's trees there. Butwhatever. It's a cool shop. And
it helps put things in motion.
And I like that
Sal Rodriguez (57:12):
I do. Well, now
that you mentioned it in that
area in the valley and a fewareas in the valley. Well,
actually, let's go back in time,a little bit in the valley.
There were a lot more orchards.
There are still areas there arestill small nurseries in the San
Fernando Valley. So you knowwhat, as far as nurseries go, I
think you're right, it actuallywould have been good.
Jason Connell (57:31):
Yeah. And that's
the word we should use. It's
really like a modern daynursery. To Miyagi these little
trees is a great name, butthat's what it is a tons of
trees around. It could have beenthere. It wasn't like the area
they went to was this hotbedplace. In fact, all there is is
the pottery place across thestreet, which we'll get into.
And the place next to it saysfor rent and they're across the
street. There wasn't a lot goingon over there except for this
(57:54):
train the Amtrak that would justcome right in front. So
Location, location, location.
This wasn't like he was in theheart of it. But that said, it's
a cool spot. Now we go back toTerry silver, and he's doing
some dirty business now. Andwhat does he say on the phone?
Sal Rodriguez (58:10):
He's telling some
guy over the phone to dump
chloride sludge in Borneo firstof all forgot where the hell
Where's Borneo? I'm not sure.
But yeah, this guy's tellingpeople over the phone to do
these horrific things. You justimagine him dumping sludge in
some village probably in somenative drinking water. Terry
Silva is a horrible person.
Jason Connell (58:32):
And he sent like
a bubble bath and he has his
assistant or Secretary they'retaking dictation. And then
enters
Sal Rodriguez (58:41):
Mike Barnes. Mike
Barnes shows up for invitation.
Mike Barnett flash and theninvited also snake and Dennis.
And who Snake
Jason Connell (58:54):
Snake is son of
John G. Appleton. Wow, Jonathan
Appleton snake with a goldchain. He's kind of on a tear
Silver's thugs, if you will,
Sal Rodriguez (59:06):
one of his
minions along with Dennis played
by William Christopher Ford.
Jason Connell (59:11):
So Barnes comes
in does some negotiating. He
wants 50% of the Cobra Kai dojosacross the valley and Silva kind
of respects the fact that henegotiates and agrees to it, but
he has to follow the plan. Hehas to hurt LORUSSO and he has
to win the all Valley nopressure, because listen, this
guy is a tournament guru.
There's no way Daniel stands achance against him and, and he
(59:35):
knows it. He leaves nothing tochance.
Sal Rodriguez (59:39):
I guess I'm under
the impression that Mike Barnes
is sort of a national champion, right? Is that what we're led to
believe?
Jason Connell (59:48):
Right, also under
18. So keep that in mind. Oh,
Sal Rodriguez (59:52):
I mean, underage
and he's traveling around so so
let me get this straight andunder 18 Guy was recruited to go
visit some guy in his house.
This because it sounded a littlea little sketchy now.
Jason Connell (01:00:03):
It sounds like
it's under 18 ish. We're gonna
you know, I know he's 21 Butwell Squeezy man. Yeah, Mike
Barnes is actually living there.
He's living now with Terrysilver, because he's like, Snake
show him to his room. So that'shis place now. Terry Collette.
He's a collector. He collectspeople. He collects things. This
is what he does.
Sal Rodriguez (01:00:27):
Yeah. You know, I
say it sounds like it's sketchy.
It is sketchy. This is horriblysketchy. These are, these are
bad people doing bad things
Jason Connell (01:00:35):
I'll tell you
silver needs is like a cat is
petting the cat all the timewith his master plans. So now we
have Miyagi and Daniel gatheringtrees. And they're at a
beautiful location. It'sactually the devil's basin. But
they don't call it that. Theycall it the devil's cauldron. I
believe yes.
Sal Rodriguez (01:00:56):
By the way that
Devil's Cauldron is an actual
place. And it is in MontereyCounty would be considered a
central California CentralCoast. Up above Big Sur I have
been to this area and next timeI will make sure I visit Devil's
cauldron an actual place. So youknow, when you get into some of
the schematics as far as wherethey are versus where the
(01:01:16):
location actually is? Thelocation for the devil's
cauldron actually, CaliforniaCentral Coast. And yet I think
it's we're supposed to be closerto Santa Monica Malibu for the
viewer.
Jason Connell (01:01:27):
Yeah, that was
basins a little bit closer and
just stunning. It really isthere doing cartas is the
helicopter shot is kinda takesit up and above and that's an
incredible view. Great shot. Sonow we're at Mr. Miyagi little
trees and things are in motion.
They're making it work as Mr.
Miyagi and Daniel do. And Danielcomes in with an application
(01:01:50):
from all Valley Sal. And what dowe learn? Because this, I have
major problems with.
Sal Rodriguez (01:01:58):
Okay, so maybe
we're talking about the same
thing here because obviouslyDaniel needs and wants Miyagi
signature. Miyagi does not wantto sign but then later on,
Daniel doesn't need Miyagisignature. He only needs his own
right, so I got a littleconfused on that front.
Jason Connell (01:02:17):
I agree. That is
my note Exactly. For later. My
major problem right now is thefact that the all Valley has a
new rule. The current champ onlyhas to fight in the final match.
Yeah, listen. This is thebiggest eye roll I could ever do
for the credit card franchise.
This might be my single biggestproblem with this movie. That is
(01:02:40):
unfair to everyone. Everycompetitor, every Dojo every
Sensei, that is the lamest thingto slap in this movie. I just
hate it as a competitor. No way.
Do you have a seat waiting forchamp? No, it might be an easier
(01:03:03):
pool for him, perhaps. But youdo not do this. This was
specifically done. So the moviecould avoid rehashing what
Karate Kid was and some JoeEsposito, you're the best, which
honestly, this movie could haveused some of that. But it didn't
have it. So they put this thingin there. So they can say,
Daniel, if you're in thetournament, you're waiting in
(01:03:25):
the final spot. And so I'm justI'll never get over this. This
really really upsets me.
Sal Rodriguez (01:03:31):
Well, because the
truth is, if you say the champ
only competes in the final, effectively the champ is not
competing in the tournament.
Exactly. Champs not not in thetournament, you've deprived,
Jason Connell (01:03:42):
so many other
students have a chance to get
there because it could be twonew students, it's not
necessarily going to be you. Andlet's go back in time, Johnny
had to fight his way there everytime he was a two time champion,
about to be a third timechampion until Daniel bested him
well and have that rule in placefor him. So I'm sorry, I just
think it was lame. And it was abad story device. And I'll never
(01:04:04):
ever agree with it.
Sal Rodriguez (01:04:05):
Do you think
Jason it was maybe a simple way
to guarantee that Daniel will befighting Mike Barnes it's a
guarantee. Otherwise, we don'thave the guarantee. If Daniel
has to scrap his way to the topagain.
Jason Connell (01:04:18):
I agree. We could
have gotten like a rocky five
route which John Albertson diddirect. They never actually
fight in the ring. It's a streetfight. But it's Tommy Morrison
and Stallone, Rocky, RockyBalboa. But then again, as I say
that I realized that Mike Barnesalready best Daniel twice in
this movie. So it's not as ifthat's anything new. And I've
(01:04:40):
always said that Daniel isprobably good and tournaments,
especially against Johnny andthe Karate Kid when he was still
really inexperienced karatestudent, but in a tournament,
hey, you can score a couplepoints and you can be a
champion. So no, that wouldn'thave worked. Barnes was a
superior fighter. So I just, itis a way to ensure Of course
it's why they did it. And Iunderstand why they did itself,
(01:05:01):
but just in as a competitor, andas an athlete, it just bothers
me. If you can't earn it, youdon't belong in the finals. I'm
sorry. In the story. And by theway, check their IDs because
I'm, I'm gonna question DanielMike Barnes age right now.
Sal Rodriguez (01:05:17):
I think they were
drinking beer in the locker room
this time.
Jason Connell (01:05:20):
Yeah, maybe they
should compete in the over a
team of Valley tournament.
Sal Rodriguez (01:05:25):
So Miyagi does
not want to sign this tournament
entrance slip. He wants no partof it. He, which is interesting
when you look at it, though, because it was Miyagi, who
literally snuck Daniel into thetournament. In the first movie.
Literally snuck them in, right?
Stole the black belt out of thatguy's bag. I mean, let's go back
to that. I hate to bring up asore subject. So for Miyagi, to
(01:05:48):
do this about face and becompletely against the
tournament, I can understandwhere if you okay, fine, Daniel,
I don't want you to do theTournament again. But he was
completely about face againstand that I was surprised.
Jason Connell (01:06:03):
Well, he wasn't
for him to fight in the first
one either, until it becameobvious that he was going to
deal with these guys face theseguys all the time. Especially
after he sprayed them with waterand ran from the hem at the
Halloween dance when he startedthe pot, if you will, but it
became obvious to Mr. Miyagiwhen they went to go meet with
(01:06:24):
crease, and it was gonna befight here fight assault all the
time, or will go here. So hekind of gave into that pressure.
And then the second one well, Imean, listen, that was a fight
to the death and he was jumped,so to speak. So I don't think
Miyagi wants him to go back andfight just for the sake of
fighting. So I understood Miyagiis ground on this, like, hey,
(01:06:46):
that's something you've alreadydone that, you know, you're not
under 18 anymore, Daniel footthat away. You don't need to
fight in that anymore. But Ikind of side with him on that
there was nothing to gain fromit. Until much like the first
movie, it becomes somethingagain,
Sal Rodriguez (01:07:02):
well, the
verbiage that they use in some
of the fan groups were Miyagidoes not like karate as a sport.
Right? You know, sport, youknow, basketball, football, he
doesn't want karate to go thatway.
Jason Connell (01:07:13):
Right. So I would
say Miyagi was right on point.
He's always been that way untilpush beyond that. And we'll get
to that. What you just mentionedabout him needing Miyagi to sign
it, and then inevitably, hedoesn't need me I get a sign it
Yes, I agree with you. That'sbizarre. All of a sudden, it's
like, yeah, oh, by the way, Ican design this myself. But he
also got a lease to a place. Soit's like, on one side, he's too
(01:07:36):
young on the other. He's oldenough to do it. It's hilarious.
The lot of that, and that cracksme up.
Sal Rodriguez (01:07:41):
How about this,
Jason is you need an adult, if
it's under 18 tournament, youneed an adult to sign a slip for
you. So if, if an under 18person wants to fight in a
karate tournament, they have tohave a parent or guardian sign
for them. But meanwhile, thatsame 16 or 17 year old can go
get a commercial lease withouthaving a parent or guardian sign
for them.
Jason Connell (01:08:00):
Yeah, that's how
it worked in 89. Don't you
remember? So now Daniel meetsJessica, played by Robin lively
and you may recognize her andmovies like two great football
movies by the way, she was muchyounger Wildcats and best of
times, fantastic films, and teenwhich which I never saw, but I'm
sure the youngsters saw her inthat. And she's doing the
(01:08:24):
pottery scene from Ghost minusSqueezy Of course, which is
great. And Daniel walks in andand they have instant chemistry
so so am I led to believe thatthird Karate Kid film, third
love interest? Is that what'sgoing on here?
Sal Rodriguez (01:08:41):
If you want to
get into some disappointment, I
mean, the romance kind of getskilled pretty quickly on this
one. I mean, it started there'sthe sparks there they are. Yeah.
And then what happens a few
Jason Connell (01:08:54):
they have
chemistry we I thought, oh my
gosh, here we go. We've ally wehave Kimiko. And now we have
JESSICA
Sal Rodriguez (01:09:00):
Sure. And she's
blatantly flirting with them.
She pretty much set yourself upto be asked out. She kind of
hits on him. They have a date, but then we'll see where this
goes.
Jason Connell (01:09:09):
So then he goes
back over to Miyagi little trees
and Miyagi, like in fiveminutes. He's created a
masterpiece. This guy isincredible. With bonsai. He's
doing a great job. He's got thedrawing, which he's looking at,
and I'm astonished by what Mr.
Miyagi can do. Of course, lookat his house. Look at his
gardens. The guy's incredible. Idon't think
Sal Rodriguez (01:09:29):
we've seen Mr.
Miyagi draw before and in thisone, we see him draw, I don't
think credit get one or two, wesee him draw anything.
Jason Connell (01:09:36):
No, but also
great at that. And that's why he
went to go meet Jessica becausehe was gonna go to the pottery
barn and see if she could putlike an embossed logo, which I
don't even have yet on somethings, and so we'll get to that
in a little while. And that wasthe reason he matter. But of
course, Miyagi kind of pushedhim over there knowing there's a
cute girl over there, and he'sexcited he got a date. But when
(01:09:57):
Daniel comes back, he's alsodisappointed that the applic
Keishon is still blank.
Sal Rodriguez (01:10:03):
Yeah, me August
not having it. No, Miyagi does
not want to sign this thing helike I said he's completely
about face against thistournament. will not sign has
not signed.
Jason Connell (01:10:13):
I wouldn't sign
it either with that new lamb
rule.
Sal Rodriguez (01:10:16):
No but that but
that new lame rule makes it
better for the champ right?
Jason Connell (01:10:19):
Of course I know.
I'm just kidding. I'll leave italone. I'll leave it alone.
Sal Rodriguez (01:10:22):
I mean, look that
literally rolls out the red
carpet for the existing champ.
Yeah,
Jason Connell (01:10:26):
it's true. Now
we're back at me. Yagis. And
silver lurks around this isreally creepy. So he's like a
ninja. And he's there to getintel on Mr. Miyagi. And he
doesn't do it when they're nothome. He does it when they're
there. And he discovers what Salabout Mr. Miyagi,
Sal Rodriguez (01:10:44):
hang on a second.
This guy is a billionaire. He'sinvolved in like nuclear waste.
He hasn't. He has a staff. Hedrives a rolls. And He's
creeping around a house inreceita. What the hell is wrong
with this guy? Yeah, he'sinsane. So yeah, he's creeping
around. He's wearing theseblack. I noticed that the shoes
that he was wearing, I look atpeople's shoes and movies. He's
creeping around in what lookslike maybe black la gear. And I
(01:11:05):
think they did have le gear backthen. Oh, yeah. So He's creeping
around while Daniel is gettingready for his date. And by the
way, when Daniel puts on thiscool, red Hawaiian shirt, it's
fantastic. And then he ruins itwith a sweatshirt, who the hell
puts a on a wonderful HawaiianLuau shirt and then puts a blue
college sweatshirt over it, itmade zero sense. It maybe made
(01:11:28):
me very angry. So Terry's silversneaking around the place, and
he stumbles upon this box. Andin the box, he gets all the
information he needs as part ofhis devious plan. He's finds
information about the 400 and42nd division. Right, right. He
sees the Medal of Valor up onthe wall. He also finds a flyer
(01:11:49):
that has information on Miyagilittle
Jason Connell (01:11:55):
trees. Grand
Opening a grand opening flyer.
Sal Rodriguez (01:11:58):
Yep. So he's
gathering is is Intel. He is
Jason Connell (01:12:02):
and then he hides
and the chimney no less. And
Daniel and Miyagi, have anexchange. And Daniel decides to
burn the all Valley application.
He says, You know what? I don'tneed this. You're right, Mr.
Miyagi burns it. And then justlike a cartoon, we as they both
leave, we hear coughing, becausethat was where silver was
(01:12:24):
hiding, of course. And he's notdiscovered, and he makes it out
scot free.
Sal Rodriguez (01:12:31):
And that's when I
noticed that LA gears stomping
out the flames at the bottom ofthe fireplace.
Jason Connell (01:12:35):
Yeah, exactly. So
now Danny goes to pick up
Jessica. And this is when welearned that this is not going
to be a romance. Which is weird.
I mean, at this point in time, could have been a guy, but I
guess Miyagi is his best friend.
So let's bring in a girl butlet's quickly make it platonic.
Because we find out what Sal
Sal Rodriguez (01:12:54):
Yeah. Okay, so
this annoyed me. Because, yeah,
here we are thinking we're goingto see another blossoming
romance which by the way, Idon't need a romance. But don't
you know, piss on my leg andtell me it's raining. You know,
you, you make me thinksomething's gonna happen here.
And it doesn't happen here.
Right away. She says that she'sin the process of reconciling
with the boyfriend, that she hadbroken up with. The guy. There
(01:13:16):
was a there was a picture in ourshop of her repelling with this
guy down a sheer cliff, but hisface in the picture was torn
off. Yeah, well, that guy.
They're reconciling. They'regetting back together. She tells
Daniel this right away. And whatI did like is when Daniel said,
Okay, we'll go Dutch. Rightaway. He's like, we're going
(01:13:37):
Dutch. Yeah, to
Jason Connell (01:13:38):
save some money.
And she's been there two months.
She's pretty much running thepottery shop, but she's also
moving.
Sal Rodriguez (01:13:45):
Yes. Okay. So
right away. No romance. And
she's moving. What what are youdoing filmmakers? What are you
doing to us?
Jason Connell (01:13:53):
But speaking of
filmmaking, I love the great
handheld or Steadicam shot asthey crossed the street to go
meet Mr. Miyagi. That was areally cool shot. Follow them
all the way across the street.
Up to meet Mr. Miyagi. He meetsJessica for the first time. Nice
little exchange there. And thenDaniel's gonna give Jessica a
tour, as Mr. Miyagi goes on hisway.
Sal Rodriguez (01:14:14):
Yeah. And Daniel,
a very touching moment. For the
first time I believe ever.
Daniel referred to Miyagi as hisbest friend. Yeah, that
Jason Connell (01:14:21):
was really
touching. And that's why I don't
think they brought a guy intothis role, because it's like,
well, no, he's already got hisbest friend. So we'll bring this
photonic girl and then we'lljust make that work. still
weird. A little clunky, butmaybe it's too fresh coming off.
Kumiko coming off, Ally.
Sal Rodriguez (01:14:36):
I will say this.
Not unbelievable, realistic. Weall have platonic females in our
life. We maybe have someplatonic females in our lives.
Maybe it didn't startplatonically. Maybe we were
romantically involved at onetime or we hit on them got shut
down but you stay friends. So itis a realistic relationship. I
will say that.
Jason Connell (01:14:54):
Fair enough. So
Daniel and Jessica are talking
as they're looking around theplace and he starts talking
about martial art. She'sinterested. So he kind of pulls
a Miyagi here, which I likedthis thing. He says, He teaches
me karate, but sometimes I don'tknow what he's teaching me. He
was like, you know, when you'redoing the clay wheel and you're
sculpting pot, and he has to dothe motion kind of your hands or
(01:15:16):
not even how to describe this tothe audience, think of ghosts
and Demi Moore is like runningher fingers through the clay. So
she starts to do that kind ofmoving up and down. He comes in
like he's an attacker, and it'slike a blocking technique. And
she's like, oh, yeah, it's soclever. It's a cute moment,
because you can tell like, he'salready thinking outside of the
box, which comes in handy onCobra Kai, because he has to
(01:15:39):
become Miyagi, in the Miyagidough dojo. So you can tell
right then and there, this washim, putting that out there for
the first time. And I liked thatI liked the fact that he was
already thinking that way.
Sal Rodriguez (01:15:50):
When she's
showing the hand motions, and
he's giving the instruction withthe hand motions. There was some
energy there, there was sometension there.
Jason Connell (01:15:58):
Yeah, you could
tell, like, platonic or not.
Sometimes things happen.
Sometimes the boyfriend, fivestates away doesn't get back
together. There's hope. There'shope that these two have a
spark. But then who comes in
Sal Rodriguez (01:16:10):
every time?
Daniel is about to havesomething that could potentially
be romantic or lean in for thekiss? Boom, something happens
Karateka to at the tea ceremony, what happens? A hurricane comes
right after the kiss. Yeah. Andlook what happens here. Snake
and barns arrive. They comeright and they barge right in.
Daniel that first is like, Hey,what are you doing reclosed
(01:16:31):
thinking that they might besome, you know, weird customer.
But no, no, no, no.
Jason Connell (01:16:36):
And they have the
all Valley application because
they know, because Terry toldthem. Daniel's not signing that
he burned it. So go get him tosign this. And that's what they
have.
Sal Rodriguez (01:16:49):
Part of part of
the master plan is that Cobra
Kai wins the tournament, thuspropelling their fame. Right? If
people are going to startsigning up at those new 20
locations, that's the whole dealis the Cobra Kai has to win this
tournament.
Jason Connell (01:17:02):
Right. And this
is when we learned that Daniel
can decide it himself. Righthere. This is the first time we
learned that like, he's notgoing to get Mr. Miyagi they
want him to sign it. And Daniel,as we know, is stubborn. He's
already made the decision. He'snot the Daniel asking Miyagi to
help him sign it. He's the daddywho burned it. That's it. He's
out. So he's not going to signit. And then Barnes goes crazy.
(01:17:26):
Snake pulls them away, and outof the shop. And so I also like,
as they exit you see a payphoneand the shot. Yes. Nice touch.
Sal Rodriguez (01:17:36):
A payphone not
unlike the painful nose right
outside the dojo as Chris waswalking into the dojo at the
beginning of the movie. Here weare now in our era today. I like
seeing payphones in movies. Ireally do. I don't know. It's
nostalgic. Yeah, I'm old enoughto have used them when I was
very young. Sure. I like seeingthem powered by
Jason Connell (01:17:54):
Pacific Bell. Now
where Mr. Miyagi is home, which
we know in the Cobra Kai worldis Miyagi dough dojo, and they
do contests there in the yard.
It's beautiful. And who arrivesso
Sal Rodriguez (01:18:08):
Terry silver
walks up in his chosen every
day, man apparel, kind of littlebit poor posture just a little
bit to look humble. He wants towalk in with an air of humility,
because he puts on one of thegreatest acting performances in
cinematic history.
Jason Connell (01:18:27):
Yeah, he's there
to win them over and start this
whole master plan. Have no ideahe's connected to anything. And
he comes in, and he quicklyapologize and sell. And then he
shares what
Sal Rodriguez (01:18:40):
he bows multiple
times in respect. I'm telling
you, he's doing a fantasticacting job. And he reveals to
them, that crease is dead andwas buried just last week.
Jason Connell (01:18:54):
Yeah. And they're
shocked. Miyagi shows real
sympathy for losing a friend.
Even Daniel is sad to hear thenews because they probably hated
crease, sure, but last time theysaw him. Miyagi bested him in
front of all of the Cobra Kaistudents saved them and walked
away and hopefully that he couldfigure things out and get on a
(01:19:16):
better path to find that he'sdead. Yeah, he'd also feel guilt
for what took place. It's apretty heavy thing.
Sal Rodriguez (01:19:25):
Also, Terry Silva
does such a fantastic acting job
he really sells this to Miyagiand Daniel they believe it they
believe this guy there's noreason not to. I'm telling you,
he appears very genuine.
Jason Connell (01:19:36):
So in the show
Cobra Kai, Johnny is going
around for a while thinking he'sdead. So I'm assuming that he
just heard this through thegrapevine perhaps through Terry
silver because we talked aboutthis back then like to see to
saying He's dead. He's dead tohim. Like that guy's dead to me.
I think Johnny really thoughtChris was dead for a long time.
This rumor reverberated aroundthe Cobra Kai masses, if
Sal Rodriguez (01:19:59):
you will, I would
imagine But the word got around
but you can't say that that'swhy in Cobra Kai Johnny thought
that crease was dead because afew scenes from now we're gonna
be at the valley so
Jason Connell (01:20:09):
ever Johnny had
checked out by then. So maybe
you heard a rumor here and thereand you know, he was no longer
anything to do with it didn'tfollow all Valley. So I know
it's weird, but it could havebeen
Sal Rodriguez (01:20:19):
we're getting
into the hypotheticals,
hypotheticals or whether or notJohnny found out that in there
the rumor of Chris being deadand how did that reconcile with
Kristen appearing at the valleylater and or what happened after
that? I mean, so we'll getstarted to get into the the
hypothetical so we don't knowwhere Johnny is right now.
Anyway, now Johnny is is wherewho knows?
Jason Connell (01:20:37):
So as the CN NS
and silver leaves, he just gives
us a little smirk and he justNo, man this guy. It's such a
crease thing to you know, they're one in the same these
guys. Yeah, fake is one liars, manipulative sociopath, all of
that. So now we have Jessicawho's really warming up to
(01:20:57):
Danielle and she shows up atMiyagi little trees and she has
some mac and cheese and Daniel'sover the moon about macaroni and
cheese. Let me tell you,
Sal Rodriguez (01:21:05):
Daniel is more
excited about macaroni and
cheese than commercial actors inKraft macaroni and cheese
commercials. I've never seensomebody so damn excited about
mac and cheese. And by the way,if somebody offers me mac and
cheese, I say thank you. Do youhave any sliced weenies I need
sliced ways to go on my mac andcheese otherwise, no deal.
Jason Connell (01:21:25):
Wow. There you
have it. And then just as they
settle in to have this greatmeal, right on queue, guess who
shows up?
Sal Rodriguez (01:21:34):
Barnes arrives
with snake and Dennis in tow,
with more harassment aboutsigning the stamp entry form.
You know, at this point, I'malmost thinking Why don't you
just forge his damn signature?
No kidding. forged his signatureget them entered. And then you
can still keep working on himshowing up.
Jason Connell (01:21:51):
Right and this
time they don't just do some
threads and leave. They start totrash the store. And this is so
upsetting.
Sal Rodriguez (01:21:59):
Yeah. Reminiscent
of Karate Kid to when we see
chosen trash, the Miyagi doughdojo and take that sigh and stab
the rules up there on the Miyagidough wall. I mean, very, very
painful to see.
Jason Connell (01:22:10):
In fact, there's
been a lot of trashing of dojos
in the Karate Kid, Cobra Kaiworld, but this was a business.
And we haven't seen this toomuch or ever.
Sal Rodriguez (01:22:21):
They start
trashing the place but check out
Daniel Russo taking on threeguys.
Jason Connell (01:22:26):
He takes Dennis
out. Daniel has obviously
learned a lot of karate sinceall Valley when he was in
Okinawa. He did very wellagainst chosen saved his own
life, if you will. And here heis taking on Dennis who he just
takes him completely out. Itwasn't even close. It was
awesome. So some great moves.
And this is not a small guy. Andthen meanwhile, Jessica hit
(01:22:49):
snake with I believe the bowlthat she brought over, right
knocks him down. And then whathappens?
Sal Rodriguez (01:22:58):
Barnes kicks
Jessica, in the belly. And right
away. I'm thinking I hope shewasn't pregnant. I'm sure she
wasn't. But if you kick a womanjust randomly in the stomach,
that's where my mind goes. Ihope she's not pregnant.
Jason Connell (01:23:09):
Probably should
never kick a woman anyway. Don't
kick a woman or hit a woman ornothing but this guy hauls off
kicks Jessica in the stomach.
Terrible guy. Now he's just theworst guy. He's in good company
with crease. And Terry silver.
Sal Rodriguez (01:23:23):
So the fighting
continues. Is just blowing up
there right in the middle of theshop.
Jason Connell (01:23:27):
Well, first of
all, Barnes puts a beat down on
Daniel. So it's obvious that Danis a good fighter, sure. But you
see right here, and now thathe's outmatched by Mark Barnes.
Sal Rodriguez (01:23:38):
Well, like I
said, you have now a regional
champion against a nationalchamp. But what would happen
then if you have the nationalchampion against the Global
Champions, so eventually Barneswould would meet his match. But
yeah, you definitely are shownthat Daniel cannot compete with
Mike Barnes.
Jason Connell (01:23:55):
So Sal, thank
goodness, you know, who shows up
to save the day.
Sal Rodriguez (01:24:00):
Miyagi arrives
like a superhero. It comes in
like Batman.
Jason Connell (01:24:03):
Totally. And he
has no problem with Barnes.
Sal Rodriguez (01:24:07):
No, no, Barnes is
no match. So he takes him
Jason Connell (01:24:10):
out. And you can
see, like all Barnes runs off
because he knows he can't fight.
This guy doesn't know how tocompete with them. He doesn't
know his style. It's verydifferent Miyagi learned in
Okinawa from his father, who wasa great master who taught him
and Sato, so, he's the ultimatedefense offense. I don't think
Miyagi has ever even been hit.
Sal Rodriguez (01:24:29):
Well, if you
notice the way that he fights,
he doesn't keep a guard upwhatsoever. I mean, he is guard
free when he fights.
Jason Connell (01:24:35):
He's too quick.
He's got cat like reflexes andhe saves the day. They run off
the jump in this car convertibleMustang. And then they started
doing like 360s peeling out andso they literally were almost
killed by the Amtrak train.
Sal Rodriguez (01:24:51):
They made it
through the tracks and then the
train comes through if that wasa stunt. It was a very good
stunt and a very dangerousstunt.
Jason Connell (01:24:58):
That was a great
stunt that must not have been
that I'm in the car or maybe wedon't know who was driving was
Dennis driving because it couldhave that a switch could have
been there could have been astunt driver, whatever it was,
well done. And it was like, ohmy god that was really close.
And things over, but it's a veryKarate Kid scene. Destruction.
Daniels hurt. Unfortunately, this time a girl was hurt and
(01:25:22):
Miyagi saves today. But we knowthis isn't the last time we're
going to see Barnes snake andDennis.
Sal Rodriguez (01:25:29):
Oh, no, no, no,
they took off, but they did
appear uninjured or not toobadly injured, they will live to
harass another day.
Jason Connell (01:25:37):
So now we're back
at me Yagis. And unfortunately,
Sal just gets worse. The treeswere stolen, the trees they had
back at the house. were stolen.
And Miyagi is like, that's it.
I'm going fishing, and Daniel'ssuper upset, and he's gonna go
to the cops. So it's just likethis is this is the low point of
the movie right here.
Sal Rodriguez (01:25:58):
I did think this
though you mentioned earlier
when Miyagi first goes down onhis luck after losing his job at
the South Seas. He said sell thecars but my thought of the cars
for this night is they came andstole a bunch of bonsai trees.
without damaging these beautifulshowpiece vehicles here, you
would think they would have atleast broken a few windshields
or, or dented the fender atleast
Jason Connell (01:26:20):
Yeah, or spray
painted something. Yeah, it's a
good point. But they took thetrees which they know that hurt
them, because I've already heardthe shop. So it was just another
just trying to push him to getin the tournament. That's the
point.
Sal Rodriguez (01:26:31):
So what did these
guys do with these bonsai trees
that they lifted from the Yagis?
Yard? What? What became of them?
I need to know it's good
Jason Connell (01:26:39):
question. Now. So
this scene coming up is just a
terrible idea. Yeah, imaginethat in this movie. But it's
Daniel, and Jessica. And they'regoing to get the infamous bonsai
tree worth around. $10,000 tohelp save Mr. Miyagi, these
(01:27:05):
little trees. And meanwhile, Mr.
Miyagi, put this tree herehidden, and it'll be safe. And
the last thing he wants is thispriceless tree to be taken from
its spot up rooted from its spotand sold to save the day. But
this is Daniels plan he'smoving. That's what's happening.
And I just hate the idea fromthe outset.
Sal Rodriguez (01:27:28):
Well, it's a
dangerous plan. They're gonna
repel down this sheer cliff, with the ocean beneath them with
a rising current. This not onlyis a horrible plan, I don't
think it was well thought out.
They should have gone earlier inthe day when the tide was lower.
Yes,
Jason Connell (01:27:43):
yes, he did
recruit a repeller. And Jessica,
because we saw the photo. Soshe's actually done this before.
Not that that would stop Daniel,he'd figured out a way because
he's a fast learner andeverything he does, that's been
evident throughout thefranchise. But I believe Sal,
this is the time to liquidatethe car's not to go get this
(01:28:03):
tree, then you got to find aseller. He didn't even get me
August permission. Another oneof Daniels plans, just going for
it. Consequences be damned.
We'll deal with those later.
This is what we got to do. Wegot to do this. And this is his
MO throughout this entire movie.
Sal Rodriguez (01:28:21):
When we talk
about the entire Karate Kid
universe, and you and I havethought it would be neat if they
went back to a young Miyagi, atsome point in time on Cobra Kai
or a standalone film. Imaginethe moment in time when Miyagi
repelled down there himself andplanted that tree. That was a
moment in time, I'd like to see.
Jason Connell (01:28:40):
Yeah, that'd be
nice. He probably went alone.
And he probably thought I'mgonna put it here. And nobody in
their right mind will everuproot it from this spot. But
little did he know his bestfriend would do just that.
Sal Rodriguez (01:28:54):
Well, the first
part is no one really knew it
was there, Miyagi planted itthere, didn't go around telling
anybody who's going to find thisthing, who's going to look for
it, unless you know it's there.
You're not going to go juststumbling upon it.
Jason Connell (01:29:07):
True. So here we
are. They're going down. And
he's learning as he goes, How torepel. There's a couple of close
calls. But then what happens
Sal Rodriguez (01:29:18):
with these close
calls, I'm having images of Land
of the Lost. It just reminded meof Marshall wheel and Holly
going down into the land of theloss. And remember when they
first see the bonsai treethrough the binoculars, they see
a little lizard there. Did younotice a little lizard and then
later on again, they seebutterflies Yeah, it's in a very
pretty place. Yeah, so theystart making their way down.
Jason Connell (01:29:41):
And when I was
setting you up for was this they
actually dropped the tree. Oh,they have this too close calls
with Daniel slipping and then hegets his bearings and then
Jessica has a moment right whenthey get the tree. And then what
happens? Of course the treetumbles all the way down. into
the rock below and it's gettingin the saltwater. Now they have
(01:30:05):
to propel the whole way downjust to save the tree.
Sal Rodriguez (01:30:08):
Yeah, yeah, they
got to get down to water level.
And then they got to rinse offthe roots because apparently sea
water or saltwater is dangerousfor the plants so they so so
Daniels freaking out he theygotta rinse the roots, you know,
they got to make sure that theyclean out all the saltwater, put
it back in the bag and thenclimb back up, but they look up
at the ropes. And our buddiesare up there the top of the
(01:30:31):
cliff, pulling up the ropes. Ofcourse I'm talking about snake
Dennis and Barnes.
Jason Connell (01:30:36):
Yep, they're
back. So they follow them here
at the devil's cauldron andwaited for them to go down for
this moment to pounce on them.
Okay, that's fine. They knewtheir plan they would get this
Banzai, they get stuck andwhatever they had it well
orchestrated. And I guess theycan hear them from above
screaming at them becausethey're down there. And there's
waves and the tide is going tocome in and it could kill them
(01:30:58):
because they'd be stuck. And ofcourse, I love how snake just
throws the application. I mean,it's wrapped up in something and
maybe there's a rock, but hejust throws at their feet, which
sounds highly unlikely but yet,I'll go with it fine. That just
is what so what do they wantthem to do? But
Sal Rodriguez (01:31:17):
sign this
application and we'll throw the
ropes back down again. AndDaniel's resisting he doesn't
want to sign it but eventuallyhe gives in he signs it they
come back up and that's whensnakes so I see I don't think
that our bad guys knew about thebonds I think snake just
happened to see it and make anddemand that it he obviously
assumed all this is important.
This is valuable. So he wantedto basically start them for the
(01:31:39):
signature steal the bonsai treeand then barns in a epic moment
of meanness and evilness breaksthe bonsai tree in half breaks
off a limb. Yeah, it'sabsolutely terrible. And you
should oh that the look onDaniels face when Barnes broke
the bonsai tree. This is whereDaniel gets into his kick in his
(01:31:59):
own ass. You know, he'sthinking, what am I doing here?
Why am I doing this? What thehell is going on here? What What
have I done?
Jason Connell (01:32:07):
He was saying
that the whole way up to like, I
shouldn't assign this thing. Youknow, days ago, we should have
just gone along. But now I'm inthis situation. Now I'm stuck at
their mercy. And then of coursethey pull them up and they
breaks it. So now he'sregretting the whole plan, which
South he asked me horrible planfrom the onset. All he's done
now is taken this pricelesstree. Or maybe it's worth
(01:32:28):
$10,000 But it's priceless toMr. Miyagi. And now he has it
broken. And he can't hide thisfrom Mr. Miyagi. It's no longer
worth the 10 Grand or so that hethought it was gonna raise. He's
got a real problem on his hand.
This next same sow is trulyheartbreaking to me. As Daniel
shows up at Mr. Miyagi, hislittle trees, and he has the
(01:32:49):
broken Banzai, he can't hide it.
And when you see Mr. Miyagi hisface, his reaction is much
sadder than even Daniels. Andit's just it's almost too much
to bear. So
Sal Rodriguez (01:33:04):
Oh, yeah. I mean,
we don't know how many years
it's been but he recognizes thisbonsai tree as the bonsai tree.
The
Jason Connell (01:33:13):
what's the logo
for Miyagi? Dough? Dojo? Whoa,
wow.
Sal Rodriguez (01:33:17):
Hello. Mind
blown. I didn't know that. Okay,
logo
Jason Connell (01:33:21):
on his GI in the
tournament, the all Valley.
Sal Rodriguez (01:33:26):
Amazing, okay.
Okay. Now it all makes sense.
Well, no wonder he recognized itright away.
Jason Connell (01:33:31):
And he makes fast
work. It's like Miyagi. He's a
doctor in the emergency room. Hegoes right into action. He knows
what to do. And, you know, he'ssaying if it has strong roots,
it'll live and he actually evenforgives Daniel. In that moment.
Sal says a lot about Mr. Miyagi.
Sal Rodriguez (01:33:50):
man who lives
without forgiveness in heart
living worst punishment thandeath.
Jason Connell (01:33:56):
He saw the
reaction of Daniel he saw how
scared and sad he was and he wasonly trying to help although
sometimes often they get stuckon the on the trouble and
getting mad now it's not goingto change the situation. He's
got to focus on this and theyhave to work together to save
the tree.
Sal Rodriguez (01:34:12):
Yeah, like you
said it's an ER moment it's
emergency act now.
Jason Connell (01:34:17):
And then Daniel
gets upset. He goes from being
super sad and freaked out tobeing really upset because Mr.
Miyagi shares the fact that hesold the truck and he got some
trees and he's like, Why didn'tyou tell me and then this is
that manic side to Daniel that Isee these highs and lows? Just a
scene ago. He's beating himselfup for not signing me all Valley
agreement sooner than he gets upand he's screaming at the guys
(01:34:40):
that break the tree. He comesinto confessor, Mr. Miyagi, and
now he's yelling at Mr. Miyagi, not a beat later, because he
didn't know the plan. No, thisis that instability and maybe
this is all Daniel is a bitbipolar at times. It seems like
Sal Rodriguez (01:34:55):
this is some
heavy duty stuff he has to deal
with. I mean, I don't know at 17or 16 or 17 or Even 18 that I
had, you know, the stakes werenot that high for me. When I was
his age, I mean his life isthreatened pretty much is his
physical, his physical safety.
Obviously his business hisbusiness partnership, remember
he is partner now with with meon this. So he does have a lot
(01:35:17):
of stuff to lose and the stakesare high for this young man. So
I do let him off the hook alittle bit for his emotional
roller coaster but he does seema bit bipolar. I agree.
Jason Connell (01:35:29):
He made a good
point, Sal. And they are
partners. And I think weneglected to say that earlier
but when Miyagi accepted thelease and he was excited by this
idea of making a business givena real go. He said, What to
Daniel,
Sal Rodriguez (01:35:42):
he looked at the
lease and he said something
missing and Daniel's like, well, what what did I miss? And Mr.
Miyagi says, Your name next tomine? Partners? Right? A very
sweet moment. I do really lovethese sweet moments. When people
get vulnerable. They openthemselves up, they give their
generous they offer. I love thatstuff. So yeah, Miyagi invited
(01:36:03):
Daniel to be his partner in thisventure that Daniel financed
basically. So it definitely is apartnership in every sense of
the word.
Jason Connell (01:36:11):
Yeah, they're
partners and we're buddies for
life. And I love that we're inthis together when he brings a
tree in and he knows he messedup and it's not the best choice,
of course, but Miyagi forgiveshim in an instant. It's great.
It's great stuff. And so as theyresuscitate the tree, Miyagi
revisits the fact that he doesnot want to train. Daniel, for
(01:36:33):
the
Sal Rodriguez (01:36:33):
all Valley,
Miyagi is just dead set against
him being in the tournament.
Jason Connell (01:36:36):
And Silver's
plans in motion. And Daniel is
like, left to his own devices,he's gonna have to do this,
because now he's signed thisthing. And he's in it. And so
now we cut to Daniel and Jessicagoing for a jog, working out a
little bit. And guess who comesdriving up and the old truck?
Sal Rodriguez (01:36:58):
Well, now you got
me thinking here. What if Mr.
Miyagi had decided early on totrain Daniel? Well, then there
goes Karate Kid three, right?
That's a good point.
Jason Connell (01:37:08):
But he did ask
Daniel as he connected with him,
and he just knew that Miyagi wasagainst it. So he just kept
pressing. I'm sure if Miyagi wasin and they're going to come
back for all valley the planwould have shifted, no matter
what they have Mike Barnes, andthey'll hurt him in the
tournament. So maybe some of theother nuances are some of the
other logistics of it will notbe the same.
Sal Rodriguez (01:37:29):
Yes. And by the
way, one of many things I love
about our podcast is how ourpersonal lives may intertwine
and right there where Jessicaand Daniel were jogging was in
Santa Monica Ocean Avenue bluffscalled Palisades Park in my
years past, particularly when Iused to do marathon runs. That
was part of my training ground Iwould start in Brentwood, run
down San facente hit ocean andthen run down ocean to Marina
(01:37:52):
del Rey and then turn aroundback and that was about it. I
think about an eight nine mileroute from San Vicenta in
Brentwood, all the way down toMarina del Rey and back running
along Ocean Avenue bluffs rightwhere Daniel and Jessica are
running right now. There theyare running along, Terry silver
shows up in the little truck. Soagain, this is where you're
thinking they're being tailed.
Everywhere they go, Daniel, Mr.
(01:38:13):
Miyagi, Jessica. They are beingtailed all the time. Now, one
thing I definitely noticed aboutJessica was those high atop
Reeboks again, she's jogging andhigh top Reeboks? Was that the
80s? Or is it just her choice?
Those are the same shoes Ibelieve she used to repel down
the shear face. But when Terrysilver rose up and they start
talking about the the sweep ofthe leg and he goes oh yeah,
(01:38:34):
guys in the tournaments, theyalways fall for that Sweep the
leg.
Jason Connell (01:38:38):
And of course
Daniel doesn't know the leg
sweeps. In fact, he took legsweeps in the first Karate Kid.
So leg sweeps are a great thing.
Terry's right. But all fightingis important. So I think he has
a plan. He's not trying to makeDaniel better. He's just trying
to show that hey, I can. I cantrain you over here and I can
teach you some things to win atournament. And by the way, I
have a book on leg sweeps andI'll bring it by he knows that
(01:39:00):
Miyagi is not helping. So he'sjust trying to win his his trust
a little bit. Yeah,
Sal Rodriguez (01:39:07):
the plan is in
motion the evil plan. The Cobra
Kai revenge is happening.
Jason Connell (01:39:12):
Exactly. Now
we're at Maggie's house and
Daniel's training when Guess whoarrives
Sal Rodriguez (01:39:19):
Barnes barges in
ready to fight very angry about
having the police called on him.
Although he did mention, youdon't have any evidence. And
maybe he was right about that.
So he's ready to go toe to toewith Daniel right there. And
what the viewer will soon learnwas that this is part of the
larger plan. Right? So in walksTerry Silva, who bests Mike
(01:39:40):
Barnes right there in front ofDaniel so Daniels thinking oh,
man, Terry's my hero in here atthis moment. Kicking Mike Barnes
is asked right in front of mekicking them out of the backyard
literally kicking him in the assas he runs out. Yeah. So yeah,
Daniel standing there, like Wow,thanks, man. Thanks for taking
care of my nuisance.
Jason Connell (01:39:59):
Yeah, cuz Daniel
gets a shot. out in here and
they're on Barnes but thenBarnes just overpowers him with
knowledge with meanness, he's,he's driven. And he's had a lot
more tournament fightingunderneath his belt, literally.
And yeah, he comes in and saveshim. He's like, Oh my gosh, this
guy knows his stuff. He has noproblem with this Mike Barnes
(01:40:19):
guy much like Miyagi, but Miyagirefuses to train him. So he's in
and he gives him the book. He'slike, Oh, wow, thanks so much.
So Terry's like this new bestfriend.
Sal Rodriguez (01:40:29):
Yeah. When Terry
arrives, Barnes has Daniel on
the ground with his foot on hisneck.
Jason Connell (01:40:35):
Yeah, exactly. So
before Terry leaves though, he
starts teaching him the frontleg sweep, and has him do it to
him. They teach his Danny how todo it. And he knocks tear to the
ground. And he says, Oh, wow,you did pretty good. He got
strong kick there. You know, andwe know Daniel has some moves.
But of course terrorist isplanted up. Sure. And what does
(01:40:56):
he invite him to do? So
Sal Rodriguez (01:40:59):
he says that if
Daniel ever needs that he can
approach silver to help with histraining
Jason Connell (01:41:03):
at Cobra Kai.
It's all different now. It'sunder new management. And he'd
love to have you come by, wow.
The Belly of the Beast Sal, thedojo that he wanted to join, and
the first movie and had hestayed in class that day, and
(01:41:24):
made amends with Johnny. Historywould have been different.
Sal Rodriguez (01:41:29):
Yep. And Terry
Silva is such a wonderful actor.
He has Daniel believing thatthis is not your old Cobra Kai.
No, not your parents Cobra Kai.
Now things are different. Now.
Chris is dead. I've taken over.
I'm going to redeem Cobra Kaiand yeah, Daniel is falling for
it. hook line and sinker.
Jason Connell (01:41:45):
Yep. Now we cut
to Daniel driving and he pulls
up and there's Miyagi andJessica, and they've got all
these pots that she's done. Andby the way, they're all amazing.
They're the logo from theBanzai. That's the Miyagi logo
and everything. And Daniel'slike, Yeah, I saw this every
day. That's a great Whatever.
Hey, can you teach me how tosweep? And of course, what
(01:42:06):
happens now?
Sal Rodriguez (01:42:09):
Well, of course,
Mr. Miyagi does have a wonderful
sense of humor. So when he'sasked by Daniel to learn to
sweep, Mr. Miyagi leaves, comesback with a broom and starts
teaching Daniel how to sweep
Jason Connell (01:42:22):
literally with a
broom and Daniel is having none
of it. He's out of there. Yeah, very upset, super upset, which
have a drinking game with howmany times Daniel loses his
temper. In this movie. We wouldall be quite drunk. So now
Daniel goes to the Cobra Kaidojo. Sal, I cannot believe it.
(01:42:48):
Here he is. Terry silver says,Hey, I'm glad you made it. I got
an extra ghee in the closet onceyou put it on. And the best guy
ever. Let's come train together.
And I guess for all intents andpurposes, Sal Daniels a Cobra
Kai right now?
Sal Rodriguez (01:43:06):
Yeah, I have a
hard time with that. I mean,
yes. And no. I mean, he's he'snot officially a Cobra Kai. But
he is been. He's been censoredby the founder of Cobra Kai. So
I don't know, I think there's anofficial initiation to get you
an actual membership into CobraKai. So I don't know if just
being under the tutelage of thefounder would would necessarily
(01:43:27):
officially qualify in a court oflaw.
Jason Connell (01:43:29):
What do they say
walks like a duck talks like a
duck. I think he's a Cobra Kairight now. Like, so. I love that
Terry's going on and like sayingthis the three Ds of my dojo,
desire, devotion and discipline.
Okay. All right. I'll buy that.
And then he goes further withhis Quicksilver method. Yep. Do
(01:43:52):
you remember what number one is?
Sal Rodriguez (01:43:54):
Rule number one.
If a man can't stand, he can'tfight.
Jason Connell (01:43:58):
Exactly. And thus
begins today's lesson. So Daniel
has to kick the Wing Chun woodendummy. And I'm telling you so as
much as I've trained in martialarts, I've never attacked the
wooden dummy. There's one of mydojo now off in the corner. My
masters like, oh, no, no, no,we'll get to that. We're not
(01:44:20):
messing with that thing. Thatthing is tough and gnarly. And
it's not where you want to beginyour training. So data begins to
kick it. And that's got to hurt
Sal Rodriguez (01:44:30):
I'm hating this
dummy because this is like a
crude rendering. It seems it'sgot cables and wood clamps and
metal piping and it's actuallythey put like some sort of
gardening gloves on it. I mean,is this the way these things are
supposed to look because thisthing is horrendous.
Jason Connell (01:44:44):
This one looks
much worse and gnarly than the
one at my dojo and probably fora fact but still, not the best
thing to train on unless youreally know what you're doing.
But that said, Daniel is verynew to this. He's never trained
like this. He's doing cat doesand and he's doing we're He's
waxing on and he's painting thefence and he's not hitting
something that's gonna hurt you.
And he's struggling with it. Butyou know Daniel, he's also very
(01:45:08):
determined. And I love thatabout him. And he hits it a bond
and he can barely walk. And thenTerry just shows you how
advanced he is. Because Sal whatdoes he do to this thing
Sal Rodriguez (01:45:20):
Terry just
demonstrates and knocks the crap
out of this thing he bustthrough he sweeps both legs and
then what do you do breakthrough the chest and smash the
face on this thing? Right so heshows that it can be done much
like a carnival workers who showyou how easy it is to make the
ball in the basket or to bustthe balloon with the Dart. Oh,
it's so easy. It's easy forthem. So look how easy it was
(01:45:42):
for Terry Silva he makes it lookeasy but it's definitely not I'm
telling you this this dummy thiswouldn't dummy I can't stand
this thing. So that
Jason Connell (01:45:48):
ends lesson one
and Daniel goes home and he can
barely walks out. I mean, he'sstruggling and Mr. Miyagi,
nothing gets by him. Danielcomes in and he's kind of spied
on him and he could just tell bythe ways walk in and, and he
knows and he wants to comforthim. So what happens?
Sal Rodriguez (01:46:04):
The vibe here in
this scene is almost like a
parent who's suspicious thattheir kid is on drugs right? Or
the spouse suspicious that theirspouse is cheating. Definitely
something is wrong here andMiyagi definitely sees that.
Well, Miyagi wants to help he'she is eternally on Daniel side.
(01:46:24):
He sees that Daniels in pain hetakes this herbal powder,
Japanese foot powder. Yeah, andyou know what? I wish I had that
because I have a foot injuryright now myself watching this
last night thinking I wish I hadsome of that stuff. I wonder if
that actually works. I don'tknow what that is. I wonder if
that is actually tied intoOkinawan folklore. Is that an
actual thing? Or just for themovie, but in any event, I'm
(01:46:46):
sitting here with my injuredfoot wishing that I had that
concoction. By Miyagi we do knowthat Miyagi is a healer he does
that the hand rubbing togetherthing remember he did it the all
Valley Miyagi does have healingenergies about him. So this
concoction for the foot, I wishI had this thing he gives Daniel
Jason Connell (01:47:02):
this concoction
and it definitely helps his foot
heal. And so now we're back atthe Cobra Kai Dojo the following
day, and even Silver's, like ayour foots better your fast
healer. I like that. So profit,Mr. Miyagi, and his wonderful
secret herbs and spices. And nowit's our second lesson. And Sal,
(01:47:23):
what's Rule number two,
Sal Rodriguez (01:47:25):
rule number two
of Quiksilver karate if a man
can't breathe, he can't fight.
Jason Connell (01:47:31):
Another true
statement. Can't stand can't
fight, can't breathe, can'tfight. Good points. And today,
Daniel, again, has to work onthe wooden dummy. It's almost
like he's gonna work on thepunching bag. But it's like,
Okay, now we're not gonna beable to here. We're gonna go
right back over here to thewooden dummy. And here he has
(01:47:51):
and he hates it. And this woodendummy, as he spins the fake head
around. What's on the head.
Sal Rodriguez (01:47:57):
There's a picture
of Mike Barnes straight out of
the karate magazine that we sawearlier on in the film, straight
out of the magazine right there, plastered on this wooden dummy.
So this wooden dummy nowrepresents Mike Barnes.
Jason Connell (01:48:09):
Exactly. And
today's lesson is stowing the
elbow. And so Daniel has to doit. Those that elbow against
that wood over and over. And, ofcourse, when he goes home later,
this time, his elbows in pain, but he doesn't want to bother
Mr. Miyagi, who's sleepingalthough Mr. Miyagi knows
(01:48:29):
exactly what's going on asDaniel tiptoes in the room. It's
a classic eye opening, like Iknow what he's doing. And so I
guess that foot powder alsoworks on elbows, it's foot and
elbow powder. And he puts hiselbow in there and then and then
what happens is Miyagi decidesto get up.
Sal Rodriguez (01:48:52):
Miyagi knocks in
the door, says, Daniel, son, and
Dan is like, oh, he drops theball, right? Isn't when he drops
the bowl of water all over theplace, makes a mess. Makes a
bunch of noise middle of thenight.
Jason Connell (01:49:08):
I know you're
they're getting high. Let
Sal Rodriguez (01:49:09):
me and what's
going on in there? Yeah, exactly
what's going on? You smoking themarijuana in there.
Jason Connell (01:49:13):
So it's not that
he really is concerned because
he knows that he's at anotherdojo, he's not sure where and
he's coming home and pain. So heassumes he's learning karate in
a way that Mr. Miyagi neverwanted down to learn. And Daniel
comes out and barks at him. Andyou know, he's sad and mad at
him for not train him. Thisbrings Mr. Miyagi to tears. I
(01:49:37):
mean, just not tears, like inthe Karate Kid, Part Two when he
lost his father, but just he'supset. This is a tough moment
for him, and this very touching.
Sal Rodriguez (01:49:46):
Also, a moment
that I don't like seeing because
if you listen to what Danielsays when Miyagi asks, What is
he doing? And Daniel responds, extreme situations require
extreme measures. Well, where doyou learn that from? Thanks.
Exactly. He's becoming TerrySilva, right before our eyes.
Jason Connell (01:50:05):
I know. So that
exchange happens and now we're
back to the third day oftraining at Cobra Kai dojo.
Today's lesson is rule numberthree. And Sal, what is that
rule?
Sal Rodriguez (01:50:18):
If a man can't
see he can't fight.
Jason Connell (01:50:21):
Exactly. And so
today's lesson is Daniel
punching the wooden dummy. Andright where Barnes's photos at.
But punching it is much worsethan kicking her elbow in it.
What happens is he begins topunch it.
Sal Rodriguez (01:50:38):
As Daniel punches
the wooden dummy with Mike
Barnes picture on it. He startsto bleed from his knuckles. And
now here we are back. When Chriswas laying down, getting his
massage at Tahiti. He's on thephone with Terry silver. And he
says, Make his knuckles bleed.
Yes, that is a crease, quote.
(01:51:01):
And now here we are. Terrysilver, making Daniel's knuckles
bleed
Jason Connell (01:51:06):
Terry silver
knows how to put a plan together
and he knows how to execute it.
He even like provokes Danielle, like, well, you know what? You
want to quit because Daniel istrying to throw in the towel on
this wooden dummy a couple oftimes. He's like, fine, I don't
deal with quitters. I'm out. Hegoes around a wall and you can
kind of see him way knowing thatDan is gonna keep hitting it.
That's just who he is. He can'tquit. And so Daniel then goes
(01:51:26):
one step further at the end ofthis lesson and sound what does
he do to the wooden dummy,
Sal Rodriguez (01:51:35):
Daniel,
unleashing his anger. He
shatters the chessboard with hiselbow punches through the
headboard just as silver has haddone earlier. And silver now
runs over, celebrates Daniel'sachievement high fiving woohoo
you did it. So this is now theculmination here of their
training with Daniel justwhipping this wooden dummies ass
(01:51:58):
and showing as much power asSilva had earlier.
Jason Connell (01:52:01):
Exactly. He's a
beast now a sky. Daniel is a
Cobra Kai disciple, which kindof is weird, because he's making
him tougher than ever, whichwould not be in his best
interest to fight Barnes. But Iguess Barnes is still far too
advanced for Daniels. As weknow,
Sal Rodriguez (01:52:20):
well, he is
teaching him things he is
toughening him up. But at thesame time he is hurting him. He
is harming him. So the sufferingis there. So even though he may
be able to throw a harder punchor harder kick, he's suffering
for it along the way. Andremember, we haven't even gotten
to the tournament yet.
Jason Connell (01:52:35):
And he's putting
a big divide between him and Mr.
Miyagi by training him. And alsohe's hurt him financially by
wrecking the shop and stealingtheir tree. So yeah, he's slowly
chopping their legs out. He'sjust having his way with them.
And I hate it. I hate howmanipulative he is an evil and
mean spirited, and you know,he's in control. Complete
(01:52:59):
control right now.
Sal Rodriguez (01:53:01):
I have to say
this and just because you know
all the worlds tie together,Cobra Kai and karate kid. And
now here we are waiting onseason three of Cobra Kai to
come out. And there's a lot ofspeculation. Oh, Terry silver is
going to be back and I don'twant Terry silver back. I do not
want this man coming back outall sad to say I just had to say
(01:53:24):
it. Yeah,
Jason Connell (01:53:24):
probably no good
would come from that. So now
Daniel and Jessica, go to theclub. It's kind of her sendoff
present, if you will. In fact,he brought it up in an earlier
scene. Like I got these twotickets. It'd be a good way to
have your last night here. Andagain, just weird like this.
Relationship friendship isreally never fully formed and
(01:53:45):
it's just weird all sudden, she's leaving the next day and
they're going to go to thisclub. Okay, fine. But at this
club, Silva is there of courselurking and he's putting things
together. He's ad libbing as wego. He didn't go there with
snake and Dennis and Barnes. Hewent there on his own. And he
(01:54:05):
begins to infiltrate a new plan.
And what is that?
Sal Rodriguez (01:54:08):
As the band sings
high wire, the band leaders
called Glenn madeiros. Terrycomes in with this wonderful
plan. He sees this young mangetting into a fight with his
girlfriend the girlfriend runsoff or maybe not his girlfriend,
just a young woman. They getinto a fight. She runs here
Jason Connell (01:54:24):
what she says she
says Get out of my way white
boy. Yes.
Sal Rodriguez (01:54:28):
But yeah, I've
never heard that and was
surprised to hear that andcompletely forgot about until
you mentioned it. So you havevery funny. So his plan is to
make this guy that he justdiscovered Terry just discovered
this guy who fights with thisgirl. Make him come on to
Jessica right to make Daniel madto then make Daniel the
(01:54:49):
aggressor in this scene. Andthat's exactly what happens. So
this guy comes along, grabsJessica and he says quote, I'm
taking her home. Daniel flipsout. And you know what I I think
he was completely in the rightand justified in this instance,
he punches the guy right in thenose. I'm surprised the guy
wasn't knocked out based on Dan,you're just tearing up a wooden
(01:55:10):
dummy in the previous scene, butthis guy falls down. And
everyone knows his nose isbroken. And then Terry grabs
Daniel, and they run off, theyhightail it out of there. And of
course, Terry Silva makes Danielthink that he's actually you
know, trying to protect him.
Let's get out of here before thepolice come before security
comes, let's get out of here.
And then they run off the kindof make it to an alleyway. And
(01:55:31):
then Daniel decides to thencontinue running off and he runs
where back to Miyagi is thatwhere he goes, actually, then
Jason Connell (01:55:37):
he goes to
Jessica's House who's packing
because he wants to make amends.
But just very quickly, back tothe guy that Terry silver hired
at the club. His name in themovie was Rudy. But do you know
that was played by GabrielJarrett? Who was Mitch from the
classic film, real genius. Hewas the lead kid, the smart kid
(01:55:58):
of that movie, which had ValKilmer in it. It was a great
movie. And yeah, I was like, Irecognize that guy. And that's
who that was.
Sal Rodriguez (01:56:08):
Speaking of that
guy. As Terry and Daniel are
running out of the club. We hearthat guy say, where's that guy
with my money? Exceeding TerryTerry's supposed to pay this guy
to do this little acting job.
cost him a broken nose. Ofcourse, Terry doesn't give them
anything.
Jason Connell (01:56:23):
Never pay them.
Wow. Terry can also be acheapskate, sometimes all the
time. So Daniel is a Jessica's.
And he shares with her and heapologizes. He's got this guy's
blood all over his shirt. That'snot who he is his character and,
and she comforts him. She knowsthat he's upset. He shares about
(01:56:45):
how he feels Miyagi shoulddisown him for how he's acted.
And so it's really touching. Shesees you there for him. And Sal,
if I'm not mistaken, is this thelast time we see Jessica?
Sal Rodriguez (01:56:56):
So yeah, this is
their last night together. And
you know what? Okay, throw outwhat I said earlier complaining
about there was no blossomingromance because what what we see
here is we see a genuine, niceplatonic friendship, right? And
that's okay. No, it's totallyfine. There they are at her
place. She is being a kind andsupportive friend on her final
night in town, gives him somesome reassurance lifts him up,
(01:57:19):
lets him cry on her shoulder, ifyou will. And he says, Thank
you. And that's it. Yeah, that'sthe last time that we see
Jessica,
Jason Connell (01:57:27):
I'll just say
this. It's not a bad thing. I
agree with you. It didn't needto be another movie with another
love interest. But honestly, Iwould have been interested to
see, just bear with me. IfJessica's character wasn't in
the movie, and you just broughtDaniel's mother in the movie.
And she was that person, hisother confidant during this
(01:57:48):
tough time, kind of rekindlingwhat the first movie was, and we
couldn't get to know hercharacter a little bit more,
because she balances them out inanother way. And I think they
could have done that. I wishthey had tried and finesse that
just just my opinion, but then
Sal Rodriguez (01:58:01):
would he have
gone rappelling into the devil's
cauldron with his mother?
Jason Connell (01:58:06):
No, he wouldn't
have done that with her. And you
know what, maybe that scenedoesn't even happen.
Sal Rodriguez (01:58:13):
But you need to
have a buddy, you need to have
you need to have a buddy besidesMiyagi, and they didn't go with
the love, love interest. Soyeah, there you go. They went
with a platonic female friend.
And you know what, I liked her?
I'm not no,
Jason Connell (01:58:24):
she's fine. She's
fine. Yeah, I just want more of
the mother. I'm sorry. You know,I think they had a great thing.
They had great scenes, theythink alike. And you could see
where he gets some of his energyand spontaneity from and you
know, just more of her wouldhave taken some of the edge off
here and there, but you'reright, they would not have
repelled together. Maybe thatwould have been a solo mission,
(01:58:45):
if at all, but anyway, just alittle insight. And now he goes
home to talk to me Auggie. Andhe says some really sweet things
here. He goes home and Miyagihas repaired the tree sow. It's
just phenomenal. He brought itback to life. And then he talks
about how the roots were strongin the tree. And how Daniel has
(01:59:09):
strong roots. And it's just, youknow, really touchy moments
because you can tell what hefeels for Daniel, despite his
flaws, and all of us have them.
But he really sees the real coreof Daniel and by the way, I
should let him off the hook alittle bit. He is just a
teenager at this point in time.
Yeah, we're all crazy teens. Weall have major mood swings, ups
(01:59:31):
and downs in the world is justso big for us to conquer that
age. And so Miyagi can just seehe's a good man. And I think
this sounds really touching
Sal Rodriguez (01:59:41):
when I was a
teenager, a memory of very
similar to what you just said. Iwas once in my bedroom trying to
pump up my bicycle tire. And itfor some reason it wasn't
working. The valve stem wasmessed up or the pump was messed
up, was unsuccessful. But Ibecame very upset and grabbed
that pump and threw it at mybedroom mirror. Now would I do
that today? Would I littlebicycle pump at my bedroom here
(02:00:02):
today. No, but I did it then.
And I don't know why
Jason Connell (02:00:06):
we overreacted to
things and that's what he's
doing. But it's easy for me tolook at this now and point out
some of the inconsistencies, but, you know, for a teenager
Yeah, they're gonna have theirups and downs and Miyagi is very
even keel. And I liked the scenea lot. And it really changed
Daniels opinion like, yeah, Idon't like who I'm becoming.
He's really sad about what hedid to that guy. He's like,
(02:00:29):
That's not me. I'm beingrewired. And he recognizes that
but he's gonna go to Cobra Kai.
Right then in there. And Mr.
Miyagi is like, you want to goin the morning. Now? Yeah,
because this is Daniel. I'mgoing to go right now. It's
gotta be done. I got myself inthis mess. And we get myself
out. I'm gone. He reacts, hereacts to everything. So he's
off to the dojo to opt out ofthe all Valley and also, I
(02:00:50):
guess, does not be a pupil thereanymore. And what happens now?
Sal Rodriguez (02:00:55):
Daniel shows up,
which I think it's odd for him
to assume that like, why wouldyour karate instructor be at a
dojo? What was this like? Whatis it like midnight, one in the
morning? Why would he be thereand yet he is there. So Daniel
arrives at the dojo and outwalks, Terry silver, he's there,
wearing his GI wearing the blackCobra Kai Gi. And Daniel's
(02:01:18):
trying to say, Hey, thanks foryour help. I appreciate it. I'm
out. I don't want to trainanymore. It's at this moment.
Now. We're silver. Lets Danielin on the whole scheme. He lets
him know what is really goingdown. He starts laughing
laughing and Daniel's face. Andthis is where Daniels like
(02:01:39):
incredulous at this like What doyou mean? Like what the hell's
going on? Out walks, Mike Barnesfrom the rear wing. And this is
where Daniel goes, Oh, okay. NowI see what's happening here.
Standing in front of them isTerry silver with Mike Barnes At
the Dojo,
Jason Connell (02:01:56):
but yet it goes
one step further. Yes. Back from
the dead crease emerges and hedoesn't just emerge, he comes
from behind his own stand D ofcrease. And he has this great
look on his face. He's got hissnarl if you will. And Daniel
(02:02:17):
looks as if he's seen a ghostand his own mind he has. And
he's terrified. But all thepieces come together. And he is
in the belly of the beast, andit's not a good situation for
him.
Sal Rodriguez (02:02:31):
He is literally
in a snake pit surrounded by
Cobras. Yeah, alone. It does notlook good. And it's the middle
of the night.
Jason Connell (02:02:40):
So the plan is
not for all of them to attack
Daniel, Mike Barnes goes in andyou know, kind of spars with
him, but he's roughing him uplike he did at Mr. Miyagi little
trees when he bested him thatnight. And it's kind of funny,
because it's so bad that Terrysays, do the crane daddy boy,
and they're just laughing andlaughing and watching barns beat
(02:03:04):
him up. And then eventuallyDaniel does runs out of the
front of the building to get outof there because that's his only
saving grace. But then south hedoes that. And Barnes runs after
him. What happens
Sal Rodriguez (02:03:17):
Moments later,
Barnes is thrown back into the
dojo. And who do we see behindhim having thrown him in Mr.
Miyagi, our superhero? Yeah,Miyagi shows up like Superman.
Kicks, Barnes's, as throws themback into the dojo. And then is
ready to take on both crease andsilver.
Jason Connell (02:03:37):
So Miyagi
actually knocks Barnes out. And
on the way down to the ground,Barnes hits the light switch,
and the lights go out. So it's amuch darker Cobra Kai dojo, as
they begin to circle each other.
I do
Sal Rodriguez (02:03:51):
consider it. The
first of two bloopers in this
scene, though, Jason. So whenBarnes hits the wall, his arm
hits the light switches andturns off the lights in the
room. However, I did watch thescene twice, pausing both times.
And the light switches wereactually unaffected. So our crew
shut out the lights. But Barnesdid not officially shut out the
lights with his arms tocontinuity error, I guess I
(02:04:14):
would say so. I should have beenon that set.
Jason Connell (02:04:16):
Yeah, so now I
like that it's crease and silver
circling him. But then Chrissays What Sal? He says we're old
friends. Yes, and he steps up,and it's crease. First Miyagi,
which hasn't happened since thebeginning of Karate Kid part
two. And that was their one andonly time going toe to toe with
each other. Fact they met atthis very dojo, and the Karate
(02:04:40):
Kid. He came in with Daniel andthey decided to fight at the
valley. So here we are, back towhere it all began their
relationship. And so whathappens
Sal Rodriguez (02:04:50):
I don't know why
I would have expected any decent
fight out of crease after whathappened in karate kid too. And
I was not disappointed becausecrease goes down. So damn easy.
A couple of maneuvers By Miyagiand creases is down for the
count
Jason Connell (02:05:04):
and he slides him
across the mat which I love he
just flings him and he goessliding across the mat like it's
a slip and slide so great
Sal Rodriguez (02:05:11):
it was
embarrassing and now Miyagi is
about to go toe to toe withTerry silver and I'm expecting
maybe a bit more and he doesthese Bruce Lee. Oh, and he does
his Yeah. mocking of both BruceLee and Miyagi you know, kind of
a racist type of thing NicholasYeah. And then well, he goes
down easy to my God. Doesanybody know how to fight in
(02:05:32):
this in these movies besidesMiyagi
Jason Connell (02:05:34):
now and when he
beats him What does he do
Sal Rodriguez (02:05:36):
then Miyagi gives
him the Bruce Lee voice back Oh,
he so then now he turns thetables and he mocks him and that
was really cute and you knowwhat? Yeah, Miyagi does have a
sense of humor. Remember at thetime he did the honk on the
nose, in the parking lot ofcrease and now he does a whole
back so so you know what Miyagiis spiritually evolved as he is.
He will give these little teasesand digs he will
Jason Connell (02:05:58):
wish to point out
the fact that tears ever goes
flying into the mirrors, andthey break and then paint falls
on to him. Two cans
Sal Rodriguez (02:06:07):
of paint fall on
Terry silver. And here's the
second blooper in the scene.
When they go back to Terrysilver again, from a different
angle. Only one of his shouldershas paint on and that's the left
one whereas just momentsearlier, both shoulders have
paint. Yeah,
Jason Connell (02:06:23):
good spot. And I
love how even in defeat, they
just come off so pompous andarrogant. I mean, literally all
three of them. Were bested. Andthen Yagi walks out. And it's
like, oh, yeah, we're gonna openup Cobra Kai Dojo is all over
and we're still the winners, andwe might even teach for free
kind of reminds me of Daniel andCobra Kai when he says, you
(02:06:46):
know, Miyagi dough Dojo forfree. Kind of a little little
touch there a little a littletip of the cap there. And it's
like this diabolical laugh fromsilver and crease and Barnes is
a he's a he's still groggy buthe's just kind of sitting down
holding his head or something.
And then in there, Sal, Miyagihas seen enough. And it's time
to train Daniel.
Sal Rodriguez (02:07:09):
Yeah. Now Daniel
asked if Miyagi what trainer for
the tournament. Miyagi says hi.
Which means yes.
Jason Connell (02:07:16):
And so now, it is
like a rocky for training
montage, which also reminds meof season two, episode nine
polpo of Cobra Kai, when you hadSamantha and Tori training, and
you cut back and forth. Well, that's what's happening here.
You're seeing Daniel Miyagidoing kados and training, while
(02:07:37):
Barnes is training with silverand crease at the dojo,
different styles converging.
It's caught us on the beach,Cobra Kai sparring. I love these
types of things.
Sal Rodriguez (02:07:48):
I personally
would rather do cottas on an
ocean Cliff than hit bricks in abuilding and but that's exactly
what's happening here. I mean,Barnes is smashing bricks with
his hands.
Jason Connell (02:08:00):
Yes. After the
montage. We're back at Devil's
cauldron. And this time Sal,what is happening?
Sal Rodriguez (02:08:07):
Well, this is a
return it to its home. They grab
the bonsai they take it backinto the devil's cauldron to
replant this very special bonsaitree a little comical
Jason Connell (02:08:20):
that it's Miyagi
and Daniel, I laugh at the fact
that it could have been him andhis mother if there was no
Jessica. But here we are.
Daniel's done this once we knowMiyagi he's done it once.
They're not experts. As far aswe know. This is
Sal Rodriguez (02:08:33):
where I realized
that this bonsai tree is kind of
symbolic of for Daniel, like thejourney of the tree is Daniel's
journey. They're kind ofsymbolic of one another. Even
Mr. Miyagi does the parallelwhen he talks about the tree
that trees choose how it grow?
So must you choose how to growand I went back in time in my
mind as a young man. And eventoday, it's no different really,
(02:08:54):
I do believe that in humanpotential. You choose your path,
you choose your thoughts, youchoose your behavior, you choose
the feelings you want to delveinto and indulge in. And so
yeah, you make the choice. Andso he realizes now and Daniel
realize that he gets to choosewhat kind of man he is to become
Jason Connell (02:09:14):
exactly. And then
Miyagi says, Miyagi, have great
faith in you understand? AndDaniel stills one of Miyagi zone
terms, and he says, Hi. Andthat's a great moment as well. I
really do. I mean, besides themdangling over the cliff on the
rappelling, I love the scene.
And yes, what you just said wasright on I totally agree. And
(02:09:37):
this bond is a represents a lotof that and I have a huge
affection for Banzai, not justbecause of this movie because
what they represent and I knowthat you're closely related with
them as well, due to yourbrother in law, I believe he's a
bonsai master if I'm notmistaken.
Sal Rodriguez (02:09:52):
Oh yeah, matter
of fact, I will be seeing my
brother in law this weekend I'llbe seeing his bonsai garden. And
I actually do aim to come backwith one or two bonsai tree He's
on this visit. And please take
Jason Connell (02:10:02):
a photo for us. I
definitely will. And we could
post it for everyone to see. Sonow we are at the All Valley
karate tournament under a team, maybe. And Barnes is doing a
growing shot and loses thepoint. And he's fighting some
random guy. We don't know who heis. But I thought it was
(02:10:23):
interesting right there. Theyset the tone on growing shot,
lose a point, and then he wins apoint. And he wins the match. It
goes against what we saw in theKarate Kid. You could get D
queued and the Karate Kid Dutchgets DQ and I believe Tommy got
the kid when he hurt Daniel, andthen he was nearly out of the
(02:10:45):
whole tournament. So it's weirdthat now you lose points. That
was never something thathappened, right?
Sal Rodriguez (02:10:53):
Well, remember
though, this has to be this way
for Terry Silver's plan to takeplace and that plan is score a
point lose a point, score apoint lose a point, let Daniel
suffer. When you reach suddendeath, you're going to be at 00
and then that's when you win.
It's a very risky plan. I was
Jason Connell (02:11:08):
unaware that it
was the all Valley Way. Like I
go in and I clobber a guy. Youlose the point. And then I score
in a reasonable fashion a legalaction, and I get a point. Of
course all the new rules are allvalid or confusing anyway. So
now we see snake and he sportingthis Cobra Kai shirt. Not really
(02:11:28):
even a cool shirt like thistight yellow shirt that like
there's not a lot of CobraKai's. I mean, it's just Mike
Barnes. It's not the Cobra Kaifrom old. He's the one student
Daniel was for a hot second. Butit's just like Cobra, Kai
groupies, and snake and Dennis.
Right,
Sal Rodriguez (02:11:47):
possibly Cobra
groupies, but in this instance,
I think more of a Daniel Russogroupie right over Daniel
shoulder before he startsfighting when we hear Terry
Silva get on the microphone anddeliver his speech. Right over
Daniel shoulder is Garth Johnsonand I saw this kid I said who is
this kid? What Why does that kidlook familiar in the bleachers.
And that's the same kid thatasked for an autograph. The
(02:12:09):
beginning of Karate Kid to winDaniel walks out of the valley
with his trophy and the twolittle kids run up and ask for
autographs one of those kidsGarth Johnson that I've
previously speculated maybe PatJohnson son, or just a
coincidence that his name isJohnson but that's the same kid
Garth Johnson listed here inthis movie a spectator number
one back in Karate Kid to listenas autograph fans. So he was
(02:12:30):
right behind Daniel supportingDaniel. So in that instance,
hola Russo groupie there shouldalso
Jason Connell (02:12:35):
point out that
Pat E. Johnson is the referee
again, the official and you haverehearsed now takes over for the
intros and he introduces TerrySilva of Dinah talks industries,
who then welcomes John creasewho is alive and well. And the
Cobra Kai dojo, and even talksabout how the Cobra Kai dojos
are going to open up all overand they stand for honesty,
(02:12:58):
compassion and fair play. Hmm,yeah. I'm not too sure about
that. Terry. So then Terry doesshare his plan, which you just
spoke on. When a point lose apoint in your right. It's very
risky, because anything canhappen. It's just I've never
heard of this type of scoring.
You score a point or you don't,they would never allow you to do
(02:13:18):
two or three dirty things tohave those points deducted.
Right? You might get away withit once, you may get away with
it twice. But then you're decued man. So again, this plan
could have easily been foiled.
Had the officials been on it
Sal Rodriguez (02:13:34):
as as a fan of
present a UFC? When it comes to
things like groin shots, accidental groin shots,
accidental eye pokes, they seemto kind of let you screw up
repeatedly. I mean, when JohnJones, former light heavyweight
champ would fight he wouldnotoriously poke his his
opponents. So when it comes tothese illegal moves that cost
your point, it seems likethere's a reservoir of how many
(02:13:56):
you can get.
Jason Connell (02:13:56):
Let's not forget
the fact that these are kids are
teenagers. This isn't aprofessional fight. This is an
under eight teen tournament.
Sal Rodriguez (02:14:07):
This is like
Bugsy Malone where all the kids
are like adults now their kidsliving as adults. Yeah,
Jason Connell (02:14:12):
exactly. So now
the fight is on. And Barnes is
up. One nothing. He's got aquick score on Daniel. And then
he does his patented growingshot. Hurts Daniel back to 00.
And this DQ warning, so Ithought okay, it's good to hear
a warning. So it does existstill. So then Daniel avoids a
(02:14:34):
flurry of punches. Sal. So he's,you know, he's hanging in there.
He's learned some things. He'sgetting better at defense
against a much strongeropponent. But ultimately, he
takes a stomach shot. And it'sback to one nothing.
Sal Rodriguez (02:14:46):
Yeah, he was
looking really good. He was
avoiding a lot of shots. He wasducking he was bobbing and
weaving. He was moving about hisdefense. The old Miyagi approach
of Don't Be there when theypunch you. He was doing great
and then yeah, all of a sudden, boom, right in the stomach.
Yeah, he
Jason Connell (02:14:59):
got him but he's
doing better than he had done
with barns and his last twochances. And then at one Oh, I
mean, this is about as illegalas it gets, like a sucker punch
right to the chin after thebreak. It's back to 00. But so
how do you not DQ this actionright here? I mean, that was
(02:15:21):
terrible.
Sal Rodriguez (02:15:22):
Yeah. When there
are punches after the bell, I
would imagine that's automatic.
disqualification. Absolutely.
You're not even legitimatelyfighting within the confines of
the fight. You're not fightingoutside of the fight. So yeah,
you're gone. You're gone.
Jason Connell (02:15:35):
It reminded me of
Miguel and Robbie and the all
Valley in Cobra Kai. When Miguelreally hurt Ravi and probably
could have got DQ but it wasalmost kind of hidden people
couldn't see him Yanka is hishurt arm ever that car yeah. And
this is kind of that but thiswas a straight punch. I miss how
you really hurt someone muchlike and Million Dollar Baby.
(02:15:56):
She got punched after the belland then fell down because she
was out cold. She took a shotone lucky and then she broke her
neck on her stool, which iscompletely sad. But this is what
happens when someone's notlooking and no one's looking out
for them. I mean, Daniel reallycould have been hurt there. So
in my opinion, ballgame rightthere. But it continues and this
(02:16:17):
excites silver increased so muchbecause the plan is working.
Daniel's taking a beating he'sgetting he's getting Sucker
Punched even after the normalbeating and is in more pain. So
like their master plan iscompletely coming to fruition.
Sal Rodriguez (02:16:34):
And at one
moment, Terry and crease look
over and see Miyagi lookingdefeated and they are big time
happy to see this.
Jason Connell (02:16:40):
Oh, yeah, Barnes
is doing all these kicks,
multiple times, no scores, lotof combat but you can hit
someone but if it's not like apoint the fight continues, if
you will. And then the buzzersounds and we are in sudden
deaths out. Here we are. Yeah,00 Exactly where Cobra Kai
wants. Daniel is hurt. And he'sso hurt that he doesn't even
(02:17:05):
want to get off the mat and keepgoing.
Sal Rodriguez (02:17:07):
Well, then,
Jason, let me ask you since
you've expressed your opinionson rules, what are your opinions
on sudden death?
Jason Connell (02:17:15):
I have no problem
with sudden death in any sports
over time or sudden death, ifyou will. And soccer for
instance, there's golden goal, the first goal and overtime as a
winner. I have no problem ifsomething goes to extra innings
or I actually like that thestakes are really raised that
point. Yeah. Yep, verysuspenseful. And it's there not
to drag on too much longer.
Sure. So Miyagi comes over. Andhe's giving encouragement to
(02:17:39):
Daniel. I mean, Daniel isdoesn't want to be there
anymore. He's just he did all hecould, but he knows he can't
beat this guy. And I love whatMiyagi says. So he says, it's
okay to lose to an opponent.
must not lose to fear. Yeah.
Great. Stay focused. Your bestkarate still inside? Now time to
(02:18:00):
let out? Oh, my God, that almostbrings tears to my eyes.
Sal Rodriguez (02:18:06):
Yeah. And you
know, when you add up a lot of
what Miyagi has said in thismovie, in particular, all these
nuggets of wisdom. I thinkMiyagi probably kicked more
knowledge in this one than forsure maybe more than Karate Kid
to maybe even more than theKarate Kid. But he's kicking
knowledge in this movie.
Jason Connell (02:18:23):
And then of
course, Barnes comes over and
berates him, like, you suck, your teacher sucks. But he's
taking what Miyagi said andletting that kind of run through
him. He's not even listening tobarnes at this point in time.
And he was right, Barnes is abetter fighter, but he was
letting fear play a part ofthat. And I gotta say, seeing
(02:18:45):
this again last night. So I lovethis next scene that's about to
happen. And I don't know how youfeel about it right now, because
we've not talked about it sinceYeah, prepping for this episode.
Sure. But unlike the originalKarate Kid, on now's about the
time, he would get in the crane.
And get ready for Johnny toadvance. This time he starts to
do what so
Sal Rodriguez (02:19:08):
he starts to do a
cutter right there on the mat in
front of everybody. Everybody'slooking at him. Like what the
hell's he doing? EspeciallyBarnes Barnes is like, what am I
seeing here? And of course, remember, this is what Terry
says you're not going to win atournament with contests. Yeah,
he does say that. You're right.
So everybody is looking atDaniel, like, What the hell is
(02:19:29):
this guy doing?
Jason Connell (02:19:32):
And Bill Conti,
his music is starting to come in
and it's becoming a classicscene that it's like we're used
to we needed something big tohappen here. And I liked the way
Barnes is also just a bitconfused. He doesn't know if he
should charge and and terroristsand get the point. Get the
point. You know, get in thereand get the point when it is it
(02:19:53):
is a silver time. Yeah, but he'she's taken off his game. Barnes
is not used to this.
Sal Rodriguez (02:19:59):
Do you think this
is one of these moments where
you How to hypnotize youropponents. I've seen it in, in
mixed martial arts with some ofmy favorite fighters. I really
think some of some of these guyslike Anderson Silva, some of
these legends, in mixed martialarts, at the peak of their
careers, kind of able toliterally get in people's heads
and hypnotize them. Where theother person is just confused as
(02:20:20):
to what the hell is evenhappening.
Jason Connell (02:20:21):
No, you're
absolutely right. And someone
who's so used to things acertain way, here's something
he's never seen before. I mean,Barnes we've already established
the fact that he's on thenational circuit, if you will,
he's fought in a lot oftournaments. He's never seen
this. And Daniel, I love thefact that he's so centered and
so confident. And we saw some ofthis with Robbie and Cobra Kai
(02:20:41):
in one moment where he kind ofstarted doing a Kata to kind of
get re centered and I loveseeing this. It's like a great
defense if he comes in. He's soaware. He's so dialed into the
moment which Daniel taught theyoung Miyagi dough students, if
you recall, number them in thefreezer, like Dimitri, like be
in the moment be there anythingcomes at you, and your energy's
(02:21:03):
just all flowing the right way.
And that's where Daniel is rightnow at the most critical time.
Thank goodness, he's there. Andyeah, Barnes is like, what is
discombobulated? What do I do?
Yeah. So Sal, what happens next?
Sal Rodriguez (02:21:21):
Barnes goes in
for a punch. Daniel grabs his
arm, flips them over, gets himon his back, grabs him by the
arm and gives them a shot to theribs, scoring the point in
sudden death. Victorious. DanielRusso wins the all Valley again.
Wow. Amazing. Yeah, so Danielnow wins back to back titles. He
(02:21:42):
won the 84. And now he wins thenice 85 All Valley under 18
tournament.
Jason Connell (02:21:46):
Amazing. Only
matching, Johnny Lawrence's back
to back Championship from 82 and83. Unreal. Now, I still have
issues with Daniel only fightingone fight, and technically only
getting one point. But he is thechampion under these rules. And
in fact, he probably should havebeen the champion much sooner
(02:22:10):
because barns should have been Dqueued more than once. Sure.
Sal Rodriguez (02:22:14):
But yeah, now
that you mentioned it, Daniel
becomes all Valley championagain, with one point. Amazing,
amazing.
Jason Connell (02:22:22):
He really earned
it and 84 I will say that he
went through a lot of CobraKai's
Sal Rodriguez (02:22:28):
so the crowd is
going nuts. Silver increased
storm off as the crowd ischeering wildly for Daniel. And
the movie ends with Danieltelling me Auggie to forget
about bowing and gives him ahug. We've never seen Daniel and
Mr. Miyagi hug. So a veryspecial moment because you know,
normally they bow to each other.
That is the tradition. That ishow Miyagi trained Daniel
(02:22:51):
bowing, which, by the way, Ilove bowing, I really do,
especially in this era, asopposed to handshakes. But yeah,
they go in for the hug and wehave a wonderful long hug shared
by Daniel and a sensei Mr.
Miyagi.
Jason Connell (02:23:07):
And their typical
Karate Kid fashion, it freezes
and then we fade to black. Nice.
You make a good point, evenearlier in the film, when they
became partners, and they're atthe little tree shop. Daniel
runs to Mr. Miyagi to hug him.
And Miyagi insisted on a bow. Soyeah, you're right. He broke his
own rule here, which iswonderful. And really quickly, I
(02:23:30):
want to also add the fact thatTerry silver immediately
disappears, but crease. He's somad and there's throwing these
Cobra Kai shirts at them theseyellow shirts that snakes
wearing that Dennis is wearing, but Silver's gone, and we've
never seen him since. But thatis it. That is the end of the
trilogy. But it still leaveslots of questions because silver
(02:23:54):
is still rich sell. Yes. Stillvery, very rich. That never
changed. And what happened withthe Cobra Kai Dojo expansion was
crease is the fact that theylost the all Valley means it's
foiled. Like really? They couldstill open up all these dojos
but I guess is that it forTerry? Like, ah, my plan was so
(02:24:15):
perfect. It was right there atthe edge. And then Barnes didn't
score. That's it. I'm done. Igot other stuff to do. I have
countries to run. I have nuclearwaste to hide. It makes no
sense.
Sal Rodriguez (02:24:25):
Well, if you look
at this horrible plot this evil
plot, it was up to barnes in theend to bring that plan home. He
did not deliver. I would notwant to face the wrath of Terry
silver.
Jason Connell (02:24:37):
That's true. And
I just want to bring up this
last point. Silver obviouslypaid the all Valley dues that
were due by Cobra Kai becausethey're in the tournament,
right? Yeah. But what did silvercrease and barns do to get Cobra
Kai banned? Of which Johnny hadto get reinstated on Cobra Kai.
(02:25:00):
Was it this strategy that gotthem banned that get appoint get
Doctor point when and overtimebut then actually last surely
not because the officials areruling that they could have DQ
Barnes if they wanted to andthey chose not to much like they
did Cobra Kai students in theKarate Kid. So what happened?
Because I don't know if that wasever cleared up or am I just
(02:25:20):
missing it?
Sal Rodriguez (02:25:21):
No, I think this
is going to have to go the way
of how did Daniel get his roomat Miyagi his house built while
they were in Okinawa, Hades asthey say in the Catholic Church,
it's a mystery
Jason Connell (02:25:32):
minutes question
for Robert Mark Kaman, the
writer, or even Ralph Maggio. Ifwe get him on the podcast, or
Patty Johnson, he might know.
But beyond that really enjoyablefilm. I actually did enjoy it
much more this viewing preppingfor this podcast. Yes, I had
some major eye rolls and I takeissue with some things. And it's
an imperfect movie. But anytimeyou get to see Mr. Miyagi and
(02:25:55):
Daniel Russo. It's a wonderfulthing. So they have wonderful
chemistry. It's like a perfectbuddy picture. I really wish we
had even more.
Sal Rodriguez (02:26:07):
Also, props to
their acting. I mean, these guys
are tremendous actors, Ralphmacho in this role. Noriyuki Pat
and Rita in this role. Theiracting is fantastic. They're so
good. Absolutely. I just want tobring up three quick things
here. little nuggets here.
Listed as dance choreographer,Paula Abdul. Whoa, yeah. Neat
(02:26:28):
extras cast dancing at the club.
I think I think it's got to bethat's the only place I think,
extras casting disc casting. Ihave worked for disc casting in
years past night. And I know youand I have talked about a theme
songs. What is the theme song ofthis movie, I believe the theme
song is listened to your heartas played at the closing
(02:26:50):
credits. And listen to yourheart is by Little River Band.
Jason Connell (02:26:54):
All right. Not
quite the same punch is the
first with the music. But hey,it's the third one and typically
sell the third film in a trilogyis not usually the strongest. In
fact, it's very often theweakest. It's absolutely the
weakest in the Karate Kid. Butstill, it's enjoyable, it has
(02:27:16):
its moments, and some of thethings continue on into Cobra
Kai world and beyond. So it's amust watch. If you're a fan of
Cobra Kai, and where thisfranchise is going. It's an
absolute must watch. I can't saythe same for The Next Karate
Kid, or the remake The KarateKid. We're gonna watch him.
We're going to talk about him.
We're gonna have podcast abouthim. Because it'll be fun,
(02:27:37):
enjoyable for everybody. But I'dsay this one is a must watch. I
didn't say that. When we startedthis podcast adventure. I said,
Hey, watch the first one.
Because in my heart that was setat all. And then I figured a
Cobra Kai, that would just pickit up from there. But as we got
in there, we realized, oh, no,there's lots of little things
that are coming from the second, the third one. So I stand
(02:27:59):
corrected. All three are a mustwatch.
Sal Rodriguez (02:28:02):
When it comes to
this trilogy, there's only one
thing I would I would change. IfI could change if I could wave a
magic wand. I would make KarateKid to number three, and I would
make Karate Kid three. Numbertwo, I would switch them. And
personally, because I lovekarate kid too, so much. This
movie was sort of a letdownafter Karateka two verses, I
think it would have been abetter build, if you would have
(02:28:22):
had this one as Karateka two andthen build up to two as three.
So you would have had them andthis trilogy and Okinawa that
way would have been bigger.
They've entered a larger world.
Because what we did is we openedup the world and then we shrank
the world again, I would haverather just opened up the world
and there we are in Okinawathere in the in the beautiful
Pacific. So that's the onlything I would have done
otherwise. Yeah, here we are. Wereached the end of this trilogy.
(02:28:44):
Thank you, Jason. I really wantto give you a public Thank you.
You've you've taken me on a on awhirlwind. You invited me into
this Cobra Kai Karate Kid worldand I I have absolutely no
regrets. Thank you.
Jason Connell (02:28:55):
You're very
welcome. Thank you for your
time, energy, companionship, andsticking with it as we go
forward, and continue to makeepisodes for our fans. And
lastly, on your point, if you'regoing to flip them around, you'd
have to take off the beginningof karate kid too, and slap it
on the beginning of credit cutthree, which would then be
(02:29:17):
credited to if I'm not mistaken.
Yes.
Sal Rodriguez (02:29:19):
Yeah, exactly.
Jason Connell (02:29:20):
Okay. All right.
So that's it. It was a wonderfultime. We're super excited. We
made it through the trilogy. Andwe're looking forward to
tackling the other movies. TheNext Karate Kid, the remake of
The Karate Kid, I know soundssuper excited about the animated
series. So whatever that is, wemay or may not venture down that
path we'll see. So thank you somuch for listening and please be
