Desireé Melfi Bozzo (00:06):
Ciao and welcome to Life out loud. I am
your host Desireé Melfi Bozzo.
We are going to use this spaceto share experiences and help
you find lasting unshakableunwavering unmessable-with joy
and gratitude. We're going to bethrowing around encouragement, a
little bit like confetti andgiving you support to live your
very best life.

(00:30):
Ciao friends! Welcome to theseason three finale of the life
out loud podcast. I am your hostDesireé Melfi Bozzo. Thank you
for joining me in this lastepisode of the season, literally
cannot believe that we havethree seasons under our belt.
Like can't even… what? That'sinsane! So, but anyway, I am

(00:54):
delighted you're here. I hopeyou're delighted you're here.
Without further ado, let's getgoing. As you know this season
we've made our way through thefruits of the Spirit found in
Galatians five. If you're newand or haven't, haven't heard of
them or wondering why I'mtalking about fruit, go back to
the first episode of this seasonand take a quick listen to get

(01:15):
caught up. So the fruits we'vecovered this season are love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and
gentleness. We are ending theseason talking about self
control. As I was I was studyingfor this episode, I kind of
shook my head and laughed alittle because how did I end

(01:35):
Season Two talking about the Oword SPOILER ALERT obedience.
And this season talking aboutself control? Way to end the
season on a high note! I don'tknow about you. But in full
transparency. Also fulldisclosure, they are both
annoying, but necessary thornsin my side. Obedience and self

(01:57):
control are painful at times.
But we also know they hem us into living in right standing with
God and within his beautifulwill for our lives. There's so
much commentary about selfcontrol and living in lockstep
with the Holy Spirit. And Ibelieve this is because the
Bible has so much to tell usabout it. I truly believe it's

(02:20):
because it's that important. Howwell we exercise self control
determines so much in our life.
And now before we dive too fartoo fast, because it's entirely
possible to do. I want to I wantto stop for a second and I want
to define what self controlmeans.

(02:40):
Self control is really theability to control your emotions
and desires and the expressionsof them through our behaviors
and actions. In other words, other words that come to mind
when we talk about bearing fruithave self control are:
composure, cool, calmcollectedness, restraint,

(03:02):
temperance, willpower,abstinence, moderation. Now, if
you're anything like me hearingthese words and imagining the
implications might seem a littlelike wearing a wool sweater,
turtleneck on a 90 degree, summer day, I felt that too,
until I gain more understandingand that's what I want to.
That's what I want to sharetoday. I want to share a deep

(03:25):
biblical dive into self controland unpack what Scripture is
really saying. I think in doingthis, it frees up a lot of our
own worldly commentary aroundit.

In first Corinthians (03:38):
12 We are told that we are allowed to do
all things but not all thingsare good for us. Now before you
roll your eyes and click the offbutton and be-bop to another
place Hear me out for a second.
I love french fries. And I alsolove pizza. I love sushi and
chocolate fudge cake like youknow the chocolate cake with the

(04:01):
fudge icing that's kind of shinyand yeah, that fudge cake and
let's not even get me started onmy love for ice cream. Do you
remember the 90s commercial for,Oh Hershey's where it was like
“I scream you scream we allscream for….” Friends, I felt
that marketing campaign in adeep way. Now, here's the
problem with all that love. Justbecause I'm allowed to eat any

(04:27):
and all of that doesn't meanit's helpful for my body -
doesn't mean that's good for me.
There are so many examples ofthis if we peek into our lives.
Binge watching our favoriteshows, scrolling for hours on

(04:47):
end, spending our money andfrivolous ways. Sharing our
bodies a little too freely.
Letting our thoughts or emotionsrun wild and the list list goes
on and on and on. All of thesethings we're able to do we have
freewill to do. But not all ofit's good for us.

(05:10):
I love the way the Messagetranslation illustrates First

Corinthians 6 (05:14):
12. It says, looking at it one way you could
say anything goes because ofGod's immense generosity and
grace. We don't have to dissectand scrutinize every action to
see if it will pass muster. Butthe point is not to just get by.
We want to live well. But ourforemost efforts should be to

(05:38):
help others live well. Friends,we serve a God who has given us
the world to enjoy immenselylike a good measure pressed
down, shaken together, runningover and poured in your lap kind
of enjoyment, but not withoutboundaries. In one of my
previous episodes I talked aboutI don't remember if it was
season one or two, but I talkedabout bumpers that little kids

(06:01):
use in bowling. No matter howcrooked or off center, the ball
is thrown, the bumpers push itback to center in the lane. Self
control is a lot like havingbumpers on our life. Things go a
little bananas, but self controlbounces us back.
When I think of the concept ofself control and bringing this

(06:22):
fruit to bloom in my life, Ican't help but think of an elite
athlete, and no one out therewho knows anything about me as
surprised by this. I am obsessedwith empowering people to master
mindsets like that of an eliteathlete. When we do this, we

(06:42):
live better. Think about it thegreatest names in sports and I'm
going to name my top threeMichael Jordan, Tom Brady and
Tiger Woods… debate me, please.
They didn't achieve greatness intheir sport because they lacked
self control. They achieved whatso many of us could dream only
dream about because of thebumpers on their lane that were

(07:04):
so narrow and so tight, therewas no room to deviate. They
were so dialed into their craft, that the habit of having self
control became second nature, what they fed their bodies, how
they trained how they practicedit all hinge on the ability to
bear the fruit of self control.

(07:24):
Friends, there's a lot of shinyfool's gold in this world.
Things that are enticing andmake a play on our fleshly
desires and proclivities. Whenwe lack self control, and when
we chase after these things, these desires of the flesh,
we're going to come up emptyevery single time - asked me how

(07:49):
There's a verse in an elevationworship song that I know I've
I know.
quoted it before it says Isearched the world. But it
couldn't fill me. Man's emptypraise and treasures that fade
are never enough. This world andits offerings, they are
enticing, but they will neverfill us up. And they weren't

(08:13):
meant to because if they did, wewouldn't have a need for Jesus.
When we have self control, wecare more about the Lord's
desire than our own. When wehave self control, we can follow
the leading of the Holy Spiritand live in God's good and
perfect will for our lives. InRomans 12: 2 it tells us do not

(08:34):
conform to the pattern of thisworld but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind, then youwill be able to test and approve
what God's will is his good andpleasing and perfect will.

Jeremiah 29 (08:44):
11 says, “ for I know the plans I have for you
declares the LORD plans toprosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and afuture.” When we can bear the
fruit of self control and livein lockstep with the Holy
Spirit. We are content and if Ican be transparent, our lives

(09:04):
end up blowing our own damnminds. I promise you that.

Proverbs 25 (09:11):
27 and 28 reminds us it's not good to eat too much
honey. Nor is it honorable tosearch out matters that are too
deep, like a city whose wallsare broken through is a person
who lacks self control. When thecity's walls are broken through
it leaves the door open for allkinds of things to come in. Just

(09:34):
like a city's walls protect acity and its people. Believe it
or not, self control protectsus.
Friends, this world is filledwith all of the glittery
enticing things we desire. bearthe fruit of self control like

(09:55):
your life depends on it. BecauseI promise you it does. My sweet
friends. That was a heavy one. Iknow why do I always end my
season so heavy? I don't know.
It's just the way they come out.
And here we are. I hope youenjoyed the season three finale.

(10:17):
I hope it put a fire in you. Ihope it sparked things in your
life that you need to cut off orprune or pull in or rein in. Oh
man, I truly pray that as youlisten in on the fruits of the
Spirit, you are able to to gaina deep understanding of what
they are. I pray you're able tosee where they are in full bloom

(10:40):
or not in your life. I pray thatlearning more about them helped
you find ways to strengthentheir bloom in your life. Help
you walk in absolute lockstepwith the Holy Spirit. I pray
that your life shines with loveand joy and peace and patience

(11:01):
and kindness and goodness andfaithfulness and gentleness and
self control forever and ever.
Amen.
My sweet listeners as I sign offthe last episode of season
three. Stay tuned into my socialmedia for what is next. We will
throw more encouragement aroundlike confetti of course as

(11:23):
always, but be careful. If youget too close. You just might
get some on you and rememberthere's always always always
something to be thankful for.
