"Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit." Napoleon Hill

Dreamers! I am delighted to see all of you again! I hope you have enjoyed your spring so far. What does it take for you to keep going after enduring trauma when moving seems nearly impossible? What is it called when you somehow find a way to move forward?

This conversation aims to highlight my guest's growth journey following trauma. This week, I am joined by the courageous podcaster and advocate Brianna Jones. Brianna highlights her journey of Post-trauma growth (PTG), helping others, among many other heart-wrenching yet courageous stories.

Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is a relatively new concept in psychology that refers to the positive changes and growth that can occur in individuals following a traumatic event or experience. While traumatic events can lead to adverse outcomes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression, PTG suggests that individuals can also experience positive psychological changes as a result of their trauma.

PTG is not simply resilience or bouncing back from a difficult situation. It is a more profound and transformative experience that can lead to a higher level of functioning, greater life satisfaction, and a new perspective on life.

Research suggests that individuals who experience PTG often report several common changes, including:

  1. Increased personal strength and resilience: Following a traumatic experience, individuals may feel a sense of strength and resilience that they did not have before. This can lead to greater self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life.
  2. Greater appreciation for life: Individuals who experience PTG often report feeling more grateful and appreciative. They may be more mindful of the present moment and savor positive experiences.
  3. Improved relationships: Trauma can lead to re-evaluating relationships, resulting in more robust and meaningful connections with others.
  4. A new sense of purpose and meaning: Trauma can prompt individuals to re-evaluate their values and goals, leading to a greater sense of purpose and meaning.

It's important to note that PTG does not occur in everyone who experiences trauma. Some individuals may experience adverse psychological effects following a traumatic experience, such as PTSD or depression.

Overall, PTG is a promising area of research in psychology that highlights the potential for growth and positive change following traumatic events. Psychologists and mental health professionals can provide more comprehensive and holistic support to individuals who have experienced trauma by focusing on resilience and growth rather than just pathology.
