All right, it's time to getstarted.
Grab your Bible, dust off yourjournal and cozy up to your

I want to kick off today's showby celebrating all the
incredible fathers out there andtheir special day that's coming
up really soon.
(02:59):
And here's a little note ofencouragement for all of us who
parent children.
If your kiddos have ever beenout of control, you can take
comfort in knowing that God hadproblems with his children too.
You see, after creating theheavens and earth, God created
Adam and Eve, and the firstthing he said was don't.
Don't what, Adam replied.
(03:22):
Don't eat the forbidden fruit,God said.
Forbidden fruit?
We got forbidden fruit?
Hey, Eve, we got forbiddenfruit.
No way, yes way.
Don't eat that fruit, God said.
Why?
Adam asked.
Wondering why he hadn't stoppedafter creating the plants God
said, because I am your fatherand I said so.
(03:44):
A few months later, God saw hiskids having a fruit break and
he was angry.
Didn't I tell you not to eatthat fruit?
He asked.
Uh-huh, Adam said.
But she started it.
Did not.
Did too, did not.
Having had it with the two ofthem, God decided that Adam and
(04:07):
Eve should have children oftheir own.
Thus the pattern continues eventoday.
While searching through thescriptures for a perfect
Father's Day passage, I came torealize that there is not a
human father in the Bible thatis without some kind of fault.
And then I thought well, that'sokay, because no parents in
real life are perfect.
We all have our little quirksand weaknesses, especially when
(04:27):
it comes to raising kids, and soI stopped looking for the
perfect story and I chose thestory of Isaac.
Now, there are several thingsabout the character of Isaac
that I would like to point out.
First, Isaac is a man of faith.
Even before his children wereconceived, we hear that he prays
to the Lord for his wife, whois barren, and she then
(04:47):
conceives not one, but twobabies.
She has twins, Esau and Jacob.
Second, Isaac is a religiousman.
For example, when he needs help, he knows where to find the
true source as we see himbuilding an altar to the Lord
and calling on the name of God.
Isaac witnesses to his inwardfaith with an outward sign of
(05:09):
worship.
But, most importantly, Isaacrecognizes the importance of
bestowing God's blessings uponhis children.
We see that in his blessing ofJacob.
And even though his intentionwas to bless his firstborn Esau
and he was tricked into blessingsecond born Jacob, his
blessing is sincere and hefirmly believes that once a
(05:30):
blessing from God is given, itwill be fulfilled.
So as we take a look intoJacob's life, the second born of
Isaac, I think that we will beable to identify some of the
seeds that this father plantedin the heart of his son.
The story goes like this.
Despite Isaac's faithfulness toGod, Jacob manages to live up
(05:51):
to his name, which meanstrickster.
He barters for his brother'sbirthright and then steals his
brother's blessing, and so hehas to flee from his father's
house because Esau, his brother, wants to kill him.
At that time, Isaac blesses hissecond born again, and with
that Jacob sets out on hisjourney.
(06:12):
He leaves with nothing but theclothes on his back, a bartered
birthright and a stolen blessing.
As he journeys through thedesert, exhausted, he falls
asleep and dreams of angelsascending and descending from
heaven, and receives anotherblessing, this time directly
from God.
Jacob then rises up early inthe morning and, like his father
(06:35):
, he too builds an altar to God,calling the place Bethel, which
means the house of God.
Jacob does find a wife at hisuncle's place.
In fact, he ends up with twowives, and after 20 years of
hard labor, Jacob returns to hishomeland.
He rises up once again, but thistime it's during the night.
(06:56):
And instead of a dream, avision of angels and a blessing,
Jacob is confronted by astranger who wrestles with him
all night in a place that hefinally calls the face of God.
Two times now, Jacob hasrecognized the presence of God
with him and has shown the samefaith that was in his father
Isaac and his grandfatherAbraham.
(07:17):
And this time Jacob receivesnot only a blessing, but also a
new name, Israel.
The angel says to him, yourname shall no longer be called
Jacob, but Israel shall be yourname, for you have prevailed
with God and shall be mightywith men.
Now the Hebrew word here forprevail can also be translated
(07:40):
as one who is whole.
The prayers of Jacob's fatherhave been answered, as Jacob is
finally made whole through aright relationship with his Lord
.
Jacob has now been given asecond chance to be much more
than he has ever been before.
The sun has risen on Jacob'slife and the healing process has
(08:02):
begun.
Jacob is a changed man.
He is a man who will go forwardfor God because he too, like
his father, now believes inGod's promises.
God is faithful to work throughpeople like Jacob the trickster
son, his father Isaac and hisgrandfather Abraham.
God works through all of them, even though none of them is
(08:23):
perfect.
But let's think about this fora moment.
What is the most importantthing about this father?
Well, let me share anotherstory with you.
It was a little four-year-oldboy who once asked, is God like
daddy?
He had just come from churchwhere he had learned about God,
our Heavenly Father.
(08:43):
Now, sound theology wouldquickly note that God is neither
male nor female, but childrendon't concern themselves with
things like that.
When a four-year-old hearsfather, the only father he knows
anything about is the one wholives with him day in and day
out.
So he asks, is God like daddy?
(09:04):
Wow, have you ever consideredthe fact that fathers and
grandfathers have a great impacton what their children might
think about God?
Maybe the greatest gift afather can give to his son or
daughter is that of striving tobe more and more like Christ.
Now, I know, and you know, thatnone of us are perfect.
(09:25):
We all make mistakes as we gothrough life.
We all fall short of what Godintends for us, but we can
strive to be more and more likeChrist in our daily life, with
our children.
Even so, the only perfectperson is Jesus Christ, who had
the only perfect Father, God,who is also our perfect Heavenly
Father.
(09:45):
So let's talk about God and thethings he models for us.
First, God loves us with aperfect love.
In fact, he is the initiator oflove.
First John 3 says, see whatlove the Father has given us,
that we should be calledchildren of God.
And that is what we are.
We are God's children, now.
(10:06):
What we will be has not yetbeen revealed, but when he is
revealed, we will be like him,for we will see him as he is.
When you place your faith inJesus, his Heavenly Father
becomes your Father.
We have a perfect HeavenlyFather who loves us tremendously
, and one day we will see himface to face and, as the
(10:29):
scriptures tell us, we will belike him.
Second, God is a great provider.
Jesus said to his disciples, Itell you, do not worry about
your life, what you will eat orwhat you will drink, or about
your body, what you will wear.
Look at the birds of the air.
They neither sow nor reap, norgather into barns, and yet your
(10:51):
Heavenly Father feeds them.
We don't have to worry aboutfood, clothing or shelter.
If we are listening for andfollowing his guidance, putting
God first in all that we do, hewill always take care of us.
God is a great provider.
Our perfect Heavenly Fatherknows how to supply our every
need.
He is the greatest gift giverof all.
(11:12):
Third, God gives us instructionsand teaches us the things we
need to know.
He has given us his Word toguide and direct us.
In 2 Timothy we hear that allscripture is inspired by God and
is useful for teaching, forreproof, for correction and for
training in righteousness, sothat everyone who belongs to God
may be proficient and equippedfor every good work.
(11:36):
God provides his Word, hisinstructions, so that we might
be equipped for every good work.
That's amazing.
Fourth, God provides a goodexample for us.
As long as we follow Jesus'leadership and example, we will
not go astray.
Following Jesus, God the Son,is the key.
(11:57):
He is our example.
Fifth, God disciplines us.
Hebrews 12 says, God istreating you as children.
For what child is there whom aparent does not discipline?
If you do not have thatdiscipline in which all children
share, then you areillegitimate and not his
children.
Our human parents disciplinedus for a short time as seemed
(12:19):
best to them, but Goddisciplines us for our good, in
order that we may share hisholiness.
Hopefully we can learn as Godcorrects us and then, with joy,
reap the peaceful fruit ofrighteousness that comes through
obedience to him.
Six, God provides for our future.
(12:40):
Speaking to the Christians inRome, the Apostle Paul, says for
you did not receive a spirit ofslavery to fall back into fear,
but you have received a spiritof adoption.
When we cry Abba, father, it isthat very spirit bearing
witness, with our spirit, thatwe are children of God.
And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs
(13:02):
with Christ.
God has made us his heirs.
We are joint heirs with Christ.
The sharing in his suffering isonly temporary, but the sharing
in his glory will be blissfullyeternal.
And finally, our perfectHeavenly Father is the one who
bestows upon us the blessing ofall blessings, as we are adopted
(13:23):
into his family through faithin his Son, Jesus Christ, and
thus receive the eternal gift ofsalvation.
So, no matter who you are orwhat your earthly father was
like, if you have accepted Jesusas your Savior, then you too
can celebrate this day byreflecting upon the blessing of
all blessings that God offers.
(13:44):
Don't forget to tell yourHeavenly Father how much you
love Him today, and don't forgetto thank Him for all that he
has done and all that he willcontinue to do in your life and
in your family.
But, most importantly, don'tforget that there are children
who look up to you.
W hether you are a father, mother, uncle, aunt or maybe
even an older sibling, they lookup to you for the model of what
(14:07):
their Heavenly Father might belike.
And because of that heavy load,I hope that you will always
remember to ask God to help youevery day in modeling your life
after the life of Jesus Christ, who modeled his life after his
perfect Heavenly Father.
Let us pray (14:23):
Almighty God, we
bow before You in honor of Jesus
Christ who, for our sake, became one of us, that we might
become one with You.
Through Him, Your word comes tous, claiming us as Your
children, directing us to Yourkingdom work, humbling us in our
(14:46):
strength and consoling us inour weaknesses.
Thanks to Jesus, we areaffirmed as Your children, and
with that privilege comes familyresponsibilities.
Let us be worthy of thoseresponsibilities and, through
all of it, give us a pure andholy passion to become more and
more like Christ.
Help each and every one of usto take seriously the covenant
(15:10):
we made when we gave our livesover to Him.
As members of Your family letus be used for Your purposes.
As John Wesley once prayed, Ifreely and heartily yield all
things to thy pleasure anddisposal, let us be used for
(15:31):
Your purposes, this day andevery day.
In the precious and Holy nameof Jesus Christ, our Lord and
Savior, we ask these things.
Amen.
Thank you for tuning in todayand remember, just like setting
biblical boundaries, it's okayto say no to things that don't
(15:51):
serve you well, like that thirdpiece of cake at the church
potluck.
