Dr. Heather Finley (00:03):
Welcome to the Love Your Gut Podcast.
I'm your host, Dr.
Heather Finley, registereddietitian and gut health
specialist.
I understand the frustration ofdealing with GI issues because
I've been there and I spent overtwo decades searching for
answers for my own gut issues ofconstipation, bloating, and
stomach pain.
I've dedicated my life tounderstanding and solving my own

(00:24):
gut issues.
And now I'm here to guide you.
On this podcast, I'll help youidentify the true root causes of
your discomfort.
So you can finally ditch yoursymptoms for good.
My goal is to empower you withthe knowledge and tools you need
so that you can love your gutand it will love you right back.
So if you're ready to learn alot, gain a deeper understanding

(00:46):
of your gut and find lastingrelief.
You are in the right place.
Welcome to the love your gutpodcast..............
Glad to be back with you.
I have a special guest with metoday.
It is my three week old baby.
So if you hear some baby coos inthe background, you are welcome.

(01:11):
But three weeks ago I had ababy.
It feels ironic to be recordinga podcast talking about
colostrum and if it's worth thehype, because 100 percent
colostrum is worth the hype whenit comes to a newborn baby.
But you might be wondering.
Is colostrum worth the hype foryou, which is why you're tuning

(01:34):
in.
This has been something thatI've gotten tons of questions
about.
Because if you are on socialmedia.
You probably have seen colostrumpopping up everywhere.
You've probably seen influencersraving about colostrum as a
miracle, miracle cure for guthealth and immunity.

(01:54):
You're not alone.
If your page is full of peopletaking colostrum.
So here's the thing.
Colostrum can be verybeneficial.
But I'm here today to provide.
Potentially a alternative tocolostrum which is something
that I think is a little bitmore effective and something

(02:17):
that we for sure seen as moreeffective in our practice.
And that is serum bovineimmunoglobulins.
So in this episode, I'm going tobreak down the key differences
between colostrum and immunolin.
The science behind it, which onemight be a better choice for you
in supporting your gut healthand immune system and answer the

(02:39):
overarching question of iscolostrum worth the hype?
Because like I said, colostrumis everywhere right now and
you're probably wondering if youshould take it.
So let's just dive right in andtalk first about what actually
is colostrum.
So colostrum is a nutrient richmilk produced by mammals,

(03:04):
including cows, including humansin the first days after birth.
And it's packed with somethingcalled immunoglobulins.
It's packed with growth factorsand then also peptides that
support immune function and guthealth, particularly in
newborns.
So while it's great the benefitsfor adults can be maybe a little

(03:27):
bit more complex.
It's not necessarily the perfectsolution for everyone.
For starters.
It is derived from milk, meaningthat it contains lactose and
other dairy proteins, making itreally unsuitable for those with
dairy sensitivities.
Its potency can really varysignificantly based on how it's

(03:48):
sourced and how it's processed, which makes it risky.
Sometimes I'll hear our clientscome to us and say, Oh, my
friend told me to take colostrumand said like it totally cured
up, X, Y, Z symptom that theywere having.
And then I tried it and itdidn't do anything for me.
So everybody's.

(04:09):
Results are going to bedifferent.
And one of the reasons could beactually from the sourcing and
from the processing.
The other thing is that there'sa risk with colostrum of
endotoxin contamination that canpotentially worsen gut issues
for some individuals.
So while many companies areprobably Really tight with the

(04:32):
regulations when it comes tothis.
That is a risk.
And is that, so that's somethingthat you definitely want to look
out for if colostrum issomething that you're gonna
take.
And definitely looking into thecompany and their sourcing
their.
processing et cetera.
So that kind of brings us toimmunolin.

(04:52):
It's an alternative to colostrumthat I believe offers better
benefits.
And I'm not here on this episodeto tell you that immunolin is a
one size fits all producteither.
While I have seen immunolin helpso many people nothing is a cure
all, right?

(05:13):
Nothing at all is going to be aone size fits all.
Although immunolin is probablythe thing that we recommend to
clients the most.
So what is immunolin?
It is derived from bovine serum,so blood plasma, not milk, which
actually means it's lactosefree.
and has a much higherconcentration of

(05:35):
immunoglobulins, which colostrumalso contains.
So these components support theimmune system and support gut
function.
So here's three reasons why Ithink it stands out for several
reasons.
Number one is the higherimmunoglobulin concentration.
So immunoglobulin contains aboutthree times 15 percent more

(05:58):
immunoglobulins than colostrum.
Now, if your social media feedis filled with colostrum ads,
you've probably clicked on themand seen that it's not cheap,
right?
So if you're spending your moneyon something, I would want to
spend my money on somethingthat's more potent and pure and
also potentially going to get meresults faster.

(06:20):
The other benefit that I see isthe consistent quality.
So since it's highly purified, immunolin has a bit more
predictable quality.
Unlike colostrum where thequality can just vary based on
sourcing and processing.
And then the other piece that Ifind really beneficial,
especially for our clientpopulation is that it's dairy

(06:41):
free.
So since immunolin is made fromserum, it's free of lactose or
other dairy proteins, which canmake it a better option for
people with dairy issues orallergies, etc.
There's one situation in which Iwouldn't recommend Immunolin to
an individual, and that is ifthey have alpha gal or a beef

(07:03):
allergy.
In that case, then it would notbe a good option for them.
While immunolin offers someadvantages to colostrum I also
want to just recognize thatcolostrum as well has benefits,
studies show that it can promotegut healing.
It can support immune function.
It can even improve athleticrecovery.
I mean, these things that you'reseeing on social media aren't

(07:25):
untrue.
Do I think that it's a littlebit overhyped?
for sure.
But there have been researchstudies proving these things.
But the benefits are often goingto be a bit more variable
depending on the quality of theproduct.
So in summary, colostrum is agreat option for some.
Not a one size fits allsolution.

(07:48):
If you're looking for somethingmore potent, consistent, dairy
free, immunolin is possiblygoing to be a better choice for
supporting your gut and yourimmune system.
Whether you're dealing with gutissues or even if you're
pregnant or breastfeedingimmunolin is completely safe for
pregnancy and breastfeeding, which is pretty cool.

(08:08):
We have clients come to us allthe time that are trying to
conceive, pregnant,breastfeeding, et cetera.
And they can't complete some ofthe standard protocols because
not that things would benecessarily unsafe, there's just
not a whole lot of research onproducts, specifically for SIBO

(08:29):
or Candida or some of the, Hpylori, some of the big things
that we often see There's justnot research because people
aren't going to do studies onpregnant women for obvious
reasons and see what happens.
And thankfully immunoglobulinsare something that are
completely safe for pregnancyand breastfeeding.
And in the next part of thisepisode, I want to break down

(08:52):
just some of the advantages orsome of the things that research
has shown immunoglobulin toactually bind to.
So, just to explain a little bitabout what even immunoglobulins.
So whether in colostrum or serumbovine immunoglobulins what they
actually do is they will bind toantigens or quote unquote, bad

(09:16):
guys in the gut, whether that isa virus, whether, whether that's
bacteria, whether that'sCandida, fungus, mold, whatever
it These things can actuallybind to unwanted things in the
gut, and once bound, theseantigens are neutralized and
removed.
From the body through thedigestive system, which is

(09:38):
pretty cool.
So when you capture theseharmful pathogens
Immunoglobulins will help reducethe toxin load on the gut and
the immune system Which willallow the body to focus on
repair and healing One thingthat we see often with our
clients is that they have a lotgoing on, especially if we run

(09:58):
stool testing on somebody, ormaybe we've done mold testing or
whatever it might be.
We see never just usually onething.
It's never one thing like, Oh,you have H pylori.
We need to remove that.
It's usually you have H pyloriand you have bacterial
overgrowth and you have, a lowgut immune system.
And you have this, that, and theother.

(10:19):
And so we need to really focuson how do we do the most with
the least.
And immunolin is one of thosethings that can actually help us
do that.
Because while it helps to bindto some of these, harmful
pathogens in the gut that makeit hard for the body to heal
because the body's constantlyjust in this fight mode trying

(10:39):
to get unwanted things out.
It also helps to build up andrepair the gut lining.
I like to explain or describethe gut lining like a
cheesecloth.
If you've ever made cheese orseen a cheesecloth, you know
that it filters large particlesout, right?
So if you're pouring somethingover a cheesecloth, it's going

(11:02):
to capture the really bigclumps.
And that's how your gut liningworks is it helps to protect
your gut from the outside world.
Now, if you've heard of the termleaky gut, Really, the actual
term for this is intestinalpermeability, but for all
intents and purposes, we'll callit leaky gut.

(11:23):
If you have leaky gut, which alot of people to an extent do,
your cheesecloth has holes init, and so things are getting
through.
The cheesecloth that aren'tsupposed to triggering your
immune system to have aresponse.
The more activated your immunesystem is, the harder it is for

(11:43):
your immune system or your gutin general to heal.
And so as we help to basicallysew back up that cheesecloth or
glue it back together whateveranalogy works for you.
Your body can actually focus onhealing because it's not
necessarily focused on just likeconstantly being activated, if

(12:05):
that makes sense.
So let's talk about some of thethings that we have seen in our
clients as far as just benefitsto immunoglobulins.
Number one is H.
pylori and SIBO.
So there's multiple studies thatindicate that immunoglobulins
can help to neutralize.
Helicobacter pylori, or H.

(12:26):
pylori, which is a bacteria thatis linked to stomach ulcers,
gastritis, SIBO, or smallintestinal bacterial overgrowth,
H.
pylori thrives in the stomachlining and can lead to chronic
inflammation if it's leftuntreated, but immunoglobulins
can prevent the bacteria fromattaching to The stomach lining,

(12:48):
which is pretty cool.
This was a study done in the BMCmicrobiology journal.
If you want to look it up, butthis can help the prevent the
bacteria from colonizing, whichis so cool.
We've seen this.
Over and over again, clientsthat have persistent bloating,

(13:09):
acid reflux, positive H.
pylori on their stool test, theyadd immunolin in, within weeks,
they notice improvements intheir bloating, fewer episodes
of nausea, fewer episodes ofconstipation, diarrhea, et
cetera.
We've even seen followup stooltesting with just the use of

(13:29):
immunolin actually decreasenumbers of H.
pylori.
And the other thing that we haveseen immunoglobulins be really
beneficial for is Candida.
Candida can be a reallycontroversial thing, especially,
again, on social media.
There's a common theme here.
But immunoglobulins can bind toCandida, which is a really

(13:50):
common fungal pathogen.
And this can overgrow in thegut.
Candida can be reallychallenging.
It can lead to symptoms likebrain fog, fatigue, sugar
cravings, etc.
And when you can bind toCandida, Immunolin can reduce
inflammation in the gut.
It will prevent further cancer.
fungal overgrowth, et cetera.

(14:12):
There's a research study that'spublished in Nutritional
Frontiers and it highlightsimmunolins role in reducing
fungal toxin overloads andalleviating some of these
symptoms.
I know I'm thinking of oneclient specifically, she had
recurring candida infections, both gut and vaginal.

(14:33):
We incorporated immunolinalongside other antifungal
therapies.
She experienced fewer sugarcravings, improved energy
levels, and a reduction orremoval of candida, which is
pretty cool.
Because candida can be one ofthose things where it is, Hard
to get rid of because there's alot of root causes of Candida,

(14:57):
low stomach acid, nutrientdeficiencies, poor digestion,
poor bile flow mold, et cetera.
And so if you're not addressingthe root cause of the Candida,
it's very easy for it to comeback.
But in this case, the immunolinwas super, super helpful for
this client.
The other thing that we haveseen Immunolin be extremely

(15:18):
helpful for is mold.
And if you listen to my episodeon mold, which I'll link in the
show notes, I can't remember offthe top of my head what episode
it is.
But it's a couple back and Italked about my journey with
mold.
So on my, and when I had my son,so my last baby or my middle
child, I Had horrible symptomsthat I started to think this is

(15:43):
not postpartum.
There's something else.
And turns out we had mold in ourhouse and I was dealing with
mold illness.
And at the time I had.
Met someone who worked at thecompany that sources
immunoglobulins and was talkingto him about some of the
research related to mold thatthey were finding.
They were so kind and they sentme a huge container of it and

(16:05):
said, just try it and see if ithelps you, no strings attached
and oh my gosh, it changed thegame for me.
And I talk about this in theepisode, if you want to listen
to it, but.
Mycotoxins, which are producedby mold, are really harmful
compounds, compounds that cantrigger chronic inflammation,
gut issues, et cetera.

(16:27):
Brain fog was one of the mainsymptoms that I had in fatigue
which I had never experiencedbefore, but immunolin has been
shown to bind to these toxins, which helps reduce the
reabsorption in the gut and justlowering systemic toxic load.
There's so many differentstudies published finding that

(16:49):
immunolin is able to bind tospecific mycotoxins supporting
its role just in detox.
So like I said, I experiencedthis myself.
and saw even on follow uptesting the reduction there.
I was breastfeeding at the time, and so I wasn't able to do any
kind of intense detox protocol.

(17:11):
And even with just immunolin, Iwas able to significantly help.
My levels of mold which ispretty cool.
We also have had other clientswith a similar story that have
been able to use immunolin ontheir mold journey to help
reduce bloating, fatigue,frequent headaches.

(17:31):
The other benefit is thatimmunolin is actious as a gentle
binder alongside detoxsupplements.
So we have one client who I canthink of who came to us who had
mold and She was on this reallyintense mold protocol from
another provider and she justcouldn't tolerate it.

(17:52):
She was having horrible die offreactions, horrible, just detox
symptoms, headaches, rashes, trouble sleeping, like her
symptoms were getting worse.
And we added in immunoglobulinsand actually took away some of
the other supplements that shewas taking and her symptoms
greatly improved.
And then her mold, Issues alsoreally improved.

(18:15):
The last thing that I'll talkabout are actually two more.
The last two things is SIBO aswell as chronic diarrhea or
inflammatory bowel diseaseimprovements.
So there are studies showingthat immunoglobulins target
toxins released by SIBOassociated bacteria, such as E.
coli, such as club Ciela.

(18:37):
These are two bacteria that wesee on the GI map.
The stool tests that we run.
And just because somebody hasthese two bacteria high does
not, of course, confirm thatthey have SIBO.
But we do have some clients thatcome to us with past SIBO
testing and know that they havepositive SIBO.
But these toxins contributehighly to inflammation,

(18:57):
bloating, diarrhea, andimmunolin can actually
neutralize these toxins.
It can alleviate gut symptoms.
It can support just overallbalance.
So if you have SIBO and you'retrying to just mitigate some of
this toxin load in your SIBO ordysbiosis, then immunolin might
be something that's reallyhelpful for you.

(19:17):
And then lastly, if you strugglewith inflammatory bowel disease
like Crohn's disease orulcerative colitis, or you have
chronic diarrhea.
That is actually what immunolinwas originally used for it can
help reduce gut inflammation bybinding to bacterial antigens
and help to lessen flare upsymptoms, especially diarrhea.

(19:40):
So there's a variable amount ofimmunoglobulins that you may or
may not have to use.
If diarrhea is a symptom thatyou have, you might have to use
a much higher dose, but.
Okay.
Immunoglobulins will help bindto whatever is triggering that
diarrhea.
And we have a client who hadCrohn's disease, who used

(20:01):
immunoglobulins to help justmanage their chronic diarrhea
within, a couple of weeks oftaking it, her stool
consistency, improved theurgency greatly decreased.
She reported feeling a lot morecomfortable eating a wide
variety of foods feeling morecomfortable leaving the house
because she wasn't havingchronic diarrhea.
So.
For her, that was life changingbecause there was a lot of

(20:23):
stress there related to hersymptoms and just ability to be
flexible with her plans.
Immunolin not only helps just, Iguess, detoxify the gut or bind
to harmful pathogens, but italso supports gut lining repair,
which this is something that'soften missed in gut protocols

(20:45):
and really significant.
Going back to the cheeseclothanalogy, we have to not only
reduce the immune system'sworkload, but we also need to
create an environment where thegut lining can then defend
itself.
When you have SIBO, when youhave mold, when you have chronic

(21:06):
inflammation, when you havecandida.
And you have intestinalpermeability coupled with that.
It's one thing to address thecandida.
It's one thing to address theSIBO, but you need to glue the
gut back together and immunolincan do that.
You can reduce gut permeability.
You're going to see improvementsin overall inflammation and So

(21:30):
that's what makes immunolinpretty unique is that it binds
and neutralizes harmfulpathogens, but it's also,
supported in research to helpreduce inflammation, repair the
gut lining and support immunefunction.
And so it can help in a twofoldway which makes it a really

(21:50):
effective product to spend yourmoney on.
But the question becomes, how,if this is something that you're
going to take, what dose do youtake, how long do you take it,
et cetera.
So the first, dose that youcould consider would be a
maintenance phase.
So this would be one to twograms a day.
This is for more ongoing gut andimmune health support.

(22:14):
GI issues or it's flu season, cold season, you're just trying
to help your body.
to remove anything that mightmake you ill.
Your kid's bringing home the flufrom daycare or colds, etc.
One to two grams a day can bereally effective, just as a
maintenance.
This can also benefit you ifyou're prone to seasonal

(22:36):
allergies.
We've seen immunolin be reallyeffective, actually, for
allergies as well.
If you're more in like a guthealing phase, then you're going
to need a higher dose.
So during a gut repair protocol,so you're addressing intestinal
permeability, dysbiosis, a gutinfection like SIBO or H.

(22:56):
pylori, you're going to need ahigher dose, probably closer to
five or more grams a day.
If you're working to reducecandida, et cetera.
This is Research suggests thatthis dose helps to improve gut
barrier integrity, reduce theinflammatory burden associated
with any bacterial or fungalinfection, etc.

(23:20):
If you're in an extremely acutesituation, so let's say you have
severe C.
diff, IBD flare, chronicdiarrhea, etc.
You might need to take somewherecloser to 10 grams a day.
We had a patient.
That was taking, 10 ish grams aday.
And that's the patient I wastalking about where their

(23:41):
chronic diarrhea reallyresolved.
It's going to help bind to moretoxins at a time, the higher
dose that you take what we haveseen.
And there's not really researchabout this, but what we have
seen with our clients istypically the higher dose you
take, right?
Sometimes it can slow down yourbowels just a little bit.

(24:01):
So if you're really sensitive,if you have constipation, then
you're, you're going to want togo slow.
If you have diarrhea, I wouldn'tbe scared to ramp up the dose.
Of course, consult your medicalprovider on this and what would
be appropriate for you.
But if you're more sensitive, you're going to want to go
slower.
So while these recommendationsare giving a general framework,

(24:23):
please know that You're anindividual, your needs are going
to vary based on the severity ofyour symptoms.
What else is going on with you?
Et cetera.
So please consult your medicalprovider, on this.
Okay.
Last piece of this episode is Iwant to break down some of the
immunolin based products thatare on the market.

(24:45):
And please note that this entireepisode is not sponsored at all.
This is just my clinicalexperience and opinion.
Nobody is paying me to do thisepisode.
And I'm talking about productsthat we often use.
Again, consult your ownprovider.
I am not your provider.
I am a dietitian.
I am not your dietitian.

(25:05):
Please consult your provider.
If you are thinking about tryingsomething like this.
But I'm going to talk throughsome of the products that we
often recommend.
So the first one is Ortho Spore.
This is a unique product becauseit's actually a combination of
spore based probiotics andimmunoglobulins.
So it has one gram ofimmunolins, so not a high dose,

(25:27):
and spore based probiotics.
So this is more of a maintenanceproduct.
If you've gone through SIBOprotocols.
Candida protocols, et cetera.
And you're looking for just kindof something to help you
maintain.
This is a great product.
If you're looking to helpcontinue to diversify your
microbiome gently removeantigens in your gut, et cetera.

(25:50):
Could be great if you'rerecovering from antibiotic use,
et cetera.
This is not going to be a greatproduct.
If you have chronic diarrhea andyou need a higher dose.
Some of the other products mightbe better.
The next product is SBI protect.
This is probably one that we usemore often than others.
It comes in a capsule or powderform.

(26:12):
And the reason that I like thisone is because it allows for a
little bit more flexible dosing.
So there's no additionalingredients.
It's just a concentrated sourceof immunoglobulins.
Making it very precise andcustomizable.
Whether you are trying to slowlyincrease your dose or take a
high dose, you can really justadd the scoops to your smoothie,

(26:36):
your water, whatever.
You can get up to that 10 gramsreally easily, that 5 grams
really easily.
If you do the scooper version ofthis, every scoop contains two
and a half grams.
So if you're going for thatmiddle dose of five grams, it's
an easy two scoop a day.
The next product is Mega IgG2000.

(26:57):
This is another popular product.
It comes in a capsule form.
It also comes in a powder form.
Again, flexible dosing, easy toadd into drinks or.
capsules if you prefer that.
Again, a straightforward way.
Their scoop is a little bit lessthan two and a half grams.
So to get to the five grams,it's two and some change.

(27:18):
So it makes it a little bit moretricky, but honestly not that
bad.
The next one is something calledmega mucosa.
So the last two that I'll talkabout are combination products.
So mega mucosa.
It has immuno in, it has fourkey amino acids, so L proline,
serin cysteine, L three anine,as well as citrus bioflavonoids

(27:39):
to support gut lining repair.
So the amino acids in thisproduct help with mucin
production, which helps with themucus layer of the gut.
It strengthen, strengthens theintestinal mucosal barrier.
It protects against leaky gut.
And then the bioflavonoidsprovide additional just
antioxidant support,polyphenols, et cetera, et

(28:01):
cetera, to support gutinflammation.
So this can be helpful forsevere intestinal permeability
for those recovering from moldor toxin exposure, chronic
inflammation, et cetera.
And it's by Microbiome Labs, just like the Mega IgG 2000.
So the difference of those twoproducts is that the megamucosa

(28:22):
has other things, the mega IgGis just immunolin.
And then the last product issomething called IgGi shield.
This is immunolin paired with Nacetyl D glucosamine.
It's a compound that supportsmucin production as well.
This helps the mucus layer ofthe gut.
Protects the intestinal wallscan be really helpful for those

(28:44):
that have long term antibioticuse, chronic stress, autoimmune
conditions Crohn's disease, etcetera.
So again, a combination product.
If you're more of a sensitiveindividual, you may just want to
start with.
the SPI Protect or the Mega IgGand see how you do.
Again, everybody's going to bethe right, a little bit
different.

(29:04):
Evaluate kind of your goals.
Are you targeting microbiomediversity, gut lining repair,
pathogen removal?
How much do you need to take?
Do you need flexibility in yourdosing?
Is convenience a priority?
Match the formulation with yourneeds.
Immunolin is a great product.
Like I said, it's safe foradults, children, pregnant,

(29:26):
breastfeeding individuals.
It is not safe for those withalpha gal syndrome or a beef
allergy.
You really just want to makesure that you are being safe.
You are consulting yourprovider.
But there's really no researchthat suggests that it should be
harmful for anyone except forthe alpha gal and beef allergy

(29:47):
that I mentioned.
So when it comes to supportinggut health, immune health like I
said, colostrum has itsbenefits, particularly, if
you're looking to boost yourimmunity, heal your gut.
If you need lactoferrin growthfactors, et cetera, but
immunolin has emerged as asuperior option.
It just doesn't have themarketing behind it.

(30:11):
Like you're going to see fromsome of these colostrum products
on social media, it has a higherconcentration of
immunoglobulins, like I said, 15percent more.
And so it's just.
A, I think an easier choiceespecially if you have a
sensitivity to dairy or lactoseintolerance and you're looking
for something that's going tohelp support your immune system

(30:33):
and help support your gut.
I hope that this episode ishelpful.
And I guess to summarize is, iscolostrum worth the hype?
Colostrum can be worth the hype, but just make sure that, some of
the things you're looking intothe sourcing, you're looking
into.
The processing and manufacturingand just some of the consistency

(30:55):
with some of these companies andalso compare costs, look at the
cost of taking immunolin andtaking colostrum and you might
actually get more bang for yourbuck elsewhere.
So not that the colostrumproduct that you're taking is
really going to do any harmbecause it's likely not, it's
probably going to help you to anextent, but may not help you as
