Welcome to the love your gutpodcast.
Hello, and welcome back to thenext episode of the Love Your
Gut podcast.
Today I want to have a very realconversation with you, and in
order to do that, I feel like Ineed to start with my own story.
(01:10):
If you go back and listen tosome of the beginning episodes
of this podcast, episode one andseveral of the first episodes, I
talk through very specificdetails of my own gut issues.
But I wanna bring up somethingthat I haven't really talked
about before, and that is thatfor years I brushed off my gut
(01:30):
issues.
I told myself that the bloating, the constipation, the fatigue
were just normal because I.
Kind of got to the point where Istarted believing that they were
normal, because I really justdidn't know anything different.
I thought that I had triedeverything.
I had started feeling crazyevery time I went to the doctor,
and they told me, everythinglooks normal.
(01:52):
We don't know why you're feelingthis way.
It's all in your head.
You're stressed, you'redepressed, whatever.
Whatever it was.
I thought that maybe.
I probably just needed to bemore regimented with my diet, or
maybe I needed to exercise more,or maybe it was just stress.
And for a while I just keptpushing through, thinking maybe
one day it'll just change, ormaybe I'll just get used to
(02:14):
feeling like this.
And the thing is, symptoms don'tjust disappear when you ignore
them.
They build, especially if youstart believing that you're
never gonna feel better.
I had a really interestingconversation with another
practitioner on a podcast that'sgonna be coming out in a couple
weeks about this very specificthing and that part of.
(02:37):
Healing is being on board withthe fact that you can actually
heal and believing that that ispossible.
And I believe that becauseyou're listening to this podcast
and because you're searching forinformation you have.
Even if it's a tiny, tiny pieceof you, you believe that you can
heal too, even if you've triedeverything, even if you've been
(02:59):
told everything's normal, evenif you've gone and had a
colonoscopy and everything wasfine, it, I truly believe that
if you are searching forinformation, there's a small
piece of you.
Even if it feels like the sizeof a mustard seed, that feels
like you can get better.
So in back to my case, in mycase, especially in my early
(03:21):
twenties, my symptoms were theirworst.
It was right after my dad hadpassed away.
It was a really stressfulseason.
I had graduated college.
I was in grad school.
I was working my first job as aclinical dietician.
Really had a lot of impostersyndrome about how I couldn't
even help myself and how could Ihelp these patients that were
sicker than me in the hospitaland because I was doing all the
(03:44):
wrong things and really justignoring my symptoms, thinking
that they might get better ontheir own, or maybe I just never
would feel better.
They snowballed into sibo.
My thyroid start started reallystruggling.
I developed Hashimoto's.
My metabolism went crazy.
It slowed to a crawl because Iwas way undereating, way over
(04:07):
exercising.
I was training for triathlons atthe time.
I've shared some pictures onsocial media before where my
face was just.
So puffy.
My body was so inflamed and Ifelt like everything I did made
my symptoms worse.
I started reacting to more foodsand was just getting worse.
I developed histamine issues, was having crazy rashes.
(04:30):
It made me feel like my body wasjust really rebelling against
me, and maybe you can relate tothat too.
So looking back now, I can seethose early gut symptoms where
my body literally just waving ared flag saying.
What you are doing is notworking, please pay attention.
But I just didn't know what todo and I wish, of course, like
(04:51):
looking back, I wish I knew whatI know now.
Back then.
But I just didn't have the toolsor the framework to support my
body or to really even listen toit.
I was so disconnected from mybody because I felt like I was
working against my body, and mybody was working against me.
And the first step really isgetting on the same page and.
(05:12):
Telling yourself like we arestarting this thing.
Whether it's a protocol or adietary change or whatever it
is, like we are working togetheron this.
We are not working against eachother.
And I see the exact same storyplaying out in so many women and
clients that we work with.
They start with really.
Small gut issues, a littlereflux, a little bloating.
(05:34):
A year later, they're worse.
They have more foodsensitivities, more exhaustion,
more hormone problems, evenautoimmune conditions.
And so today I wanna walk youthrough why ignoring your gut
symptoms doesn't make them goaway.
How these symptoms can snowballinto bigger issues.
Why supplements or eliminationdiets alone don't work?
(05:54):
And then how you can finallystop guessing and start moving
forward.
And just some easy ways to dothat.
So first, let's get into whyignoring the symptoms can cost
you more.
And here's what I've learned.
Ignoring gut symptoms is kind oflike ignoring a slow leak in
your house.
At first, it's just a littledrip, it's a little annoying.
(06:16):
But you can live with it.
But if you leave it long enough, that drip turns into water
damage mold.
Suddenly you're not just fixinga drip, you're tearing out
walls, replacing floors, spending thousands of dollars,
and your gut works the same way.
So at first, your body's justwhispering like a little reflux
after meals, occasionalbloating, constipation.
It's so easy to dismiss becauseit's like, oh, it's just, these
(06:39):
little symptoms.
But those whispers are yourbody's way of asking for help.
And like I said earlier, whenyou learn to take those signals
as cues and just a messagesasking for help, your
perspective can be a little bitdifferent.
If you don't respond, thosewhispers can turn into screams,
(07:00):
fatigue, chronic inflammation,hormone chaos, autoimmune
conditions, and I learned thisthe hard way in my own body, and
I see it every single day in ourclients.
I spoke with a woman a couplemonths ago who I had had a call
with three years ago.
No joke three years ago.
And at the time she was like,ah, I just don't know if I wanna
(07:22):
jump into this.
It's not that bad.
I think I'm gonna just trialsome things on my own.
I'm gonna go see my GI doctor.
And for the last three years shehas been trying to DIY some gut
stuff and.
Has spent so much money onrandom supplements, random
one-off appointments with hernaturopath GI doctor
(07:45):
appointments.
She calls me three years later,so this is a couple months ago,
and she's like, obviouslyhindsight is 2020, but she's
like, I really wish I would'vejust addressed this a long time
ago.
And had like dedicated support.
And again, hindsight is 2020.
You don't know what you don'tknow at the time.
But let's just break this downinto some real world examples.
(08:06):
So acid reflux is a common one.
Most people will just pop aTums, get prescribed a PPI, but
that doesn't solve the rootcause.
Over time, reflux can damage theesophagus.
This can lead to seriouscomplications like Barrett's
esophagus tissue damage.
Long-term PPI use is one of themost common reasons that we see
(08:28):
clients with.
A lot of mineral issues.
Low iron, low zinc, low calcium, osteoporosis.
B12 issues that leads to anemia, fatigue, brittle bones, even
neurological symptoms, and lowstomach acid makes you more
prone to bacterial overgrowthand infections.
(08:50):
Next one would be constipation.
I hear women say all the time,I've been constipated forever.
It's just how my body is.
But constipation is never justnormal.
When stool sits in your colon, toxins and hormones like
estrogen get reabsorbed.
And that's how constipationcontributes to things like acne
and PMS and painful cycles andeven fertility struggles.
(09:12):
And then of course, let's notforget the physical damage.
So hemorrhoids, fissures, pelvicfloor dysfunction.
So what starts is like a littleconstipation can eventually lead
to hormonal chaos and evenstructural problems.
The most common symptom that wesee is bloating.
The joke of which is not funnyby the way of I look six months
(09:35):
pregnant after eating and I'mnot pregnant.
But bloating is not normal whenit's left unchecked.
This is often a sign of poordigestion or imbalances in your
gut, whether it's SIBO or inyour large intestine, and as
people try to fix it on theirown.
By starting to cut out foods, eventually they're eating five
stay foods and they're actuallystarving their microbiome, which
(09:57):
is making them more nutrientdepleted and making things
worse.
And this causes a lot ofemotional frustration as well.
Food fear, anxiety of socialsituations, always worrying
about how you're gonna feelafter a meal.
And then the last one that I'llmention is diarrhea.
So living with chronic diarrheais exhausting, and it's not just
(10:20):
IBS, it's your body sayingsomething is inflamed, something
is infected, something'simbalanced, and the cost is
malabsorption.
You lose electrolytes, you losenutrients, you lose energy, you
lose confidence.
We have a client right now that.
Was having horrible diarrhea inthe morning and it affected
their ability to leave theirhouse at specific times.
(10:43):
So over time, your immune systemcan get weakened, can leave you
really vulnerable to infections,burnout, illness.
So this is the snowball effect, and none of this is meant to
scare you.
It's just the reality of what wecan brush off as normal, can
really grow into a bigger issue.
And this is what we see.
harder, more expensive problems.
(11:05):
But I wanna talk about the realissue here is something that I
hear all the time is I triedfunctional medicine, but it
didn't work.
I spent hundreds of dollars onsupplements and I didn't get
better.
And here's the truth.
Functional medicine is not aboutsupplements.
Supplements are tools.
True functional medicine isdigging really deep to ask why
(11:27):
are symptoms happening?
What's underneath the reflux, the constipation, the bloating,
the estrogen dominance, thefatigue, you name it, symptom.
How are minerals, hormones, nervous system function, gut
motility, digestion?
The immune system all playing arole.
Supplements alone will notregulate your nervous system.
(11:49):
They will not help your body tofeel safe enough to heal.
They won't get you out of afight or flight state.
They also can't completelyrenourish your body.
Only food can do that.
They won't retrain yourmotility.
They won't help you slow downand chew your food.
They won't address.
Major mineral imbalances thatare throwing your gut off.
(12:13):
If you're continuing to not eatenough, if you're continuing to
deplete minerals because you'reso stressed, and that's why
piecing this together on yourown just doesn't work.
You're trying to solve a puzzlewith half of the pieces missing
by just taking supplements.
And don't get me wrong, we lovesupplements.
We use various supplements withour clients depending on what
(12:34):
makes sense, for example.
If you have h pylori, we'regoing to use supplements
temporarily to address that.
Or if you have mineralimbalances, we will use various
minerals or even a custom blendto help support you.
But still, the question becomes.
Why?
Why do you have the mineralimbalances?
(12:55):
Do you have low stomach acid?
Are you really stressed?
Are you eating the same fivefoods?
Why do you have h pylori?
Do you have low stomach acid?
Are you getting it from yourspouse?
What are we actually gonna do?
To prevent this from coming backso that this isn't a recurrent
thing.
We're not necessarily trying tofollow the pill for an ill
(13:17):
mentality that I think bothconventional and functional
medicine do.
Okay.
Interrupting this episode reallyquick to tell you something that
I am so excited about.
I created the gut health audit, and this was based off of
feedback that I got from youguys.
(13:37):
I'm so excited about it becauseit answers the biggest question
that I hear all the time.
What is gonna be different thistime?
And what is missing from whatI've previously done.
So with the gut health audit,it's gonna identify gaps in your
current care.
It's gonna give you solutionsand insights directly For me,
(13:57):
I'm gonna be personallyreviewing all of these.
You're not getting any genericprotocol or AI generated advice.
You're getting.
My eyes on your story, myinterpretation of your patterns,
my recommendations for your nextsteps, and then it will show you
your next step forward thatmight be working with us and get
together, or it might besomething totally different,
that better fits your needs.
(14:18):
I'm not here to just telleverybody that they need to do
our program.
I'm gonna tell you exactly whatI think would be helpful for
you.
So this is only$89.
You'll fill out a comprehensiveintake form.
It'll cover the five key systemsthat you have to address for
optimal digestion.
I will personally review it andsend you an analysis and
(14:39):
recommendations for what to donext.
So this is basically likegetting a gut roadmap from me
without committing to the fullprogram.
And then of course, if youdecide that you want to jump
into the program, you can apply.
You$89 to any of our offers.
So I've never offered anythinglike this before and I wanna
keep it personal.
There's only 20 spots and oncethey're gone, they're gone.
(15:02):
And so if you've been listening, wondering what's really going on
with my gut, what's missing?
This is your chance to find out.
So I'll put the link in the shownotes.
You can grab one of the 20spots, and if you're listening
to this on the day that thisepisode is released, you are the
first person to hear about this.
So go and jump on one of thosespots if you would like to take
(15:24):
one.
All right, so now back to theepisode.
So now let's come back to thecost of waiting.
Obviously there are physical.
Consequences of waiting.
Your symptoms don't justmagically improve.
They escalate, just like in mystory, small gut issues turned
into Hashimoto's, histamineissues, metabolism problems,
(15:46):
sibo, et cetera.
But financially, you spend somuch money chasing answers,
doctors' visits, supplements, books, powders, quick fixes,
whatever you name it.
And most of them don't workbecause they're not.
Personal to you, and thenemotionally for me, this was the
biggest cost.
You feel so disconnected fromyour body.
(16:07):
You lose trust in yourself.
You lose trust in other people.
Let's be honest, you've probablylost trust in a lot of
providers.
You say no to things because youdon't feel well.
You're irritable with yourfamily because you're exhausted.
And then eventually you end upsaying, the words that I hear
is, I wish I would've done thisa long time ago.
So what actually works?
(16:28):
What works is a step-by-step,root cause approach, a roadmap
that rebuilds your digestionfrom the top down.
That restores mineral balance, that addresses motility, that
integrates.
Your liver, your hormones, yournervous system, which is what we
do in gut together, and this iswhy our clients often come to us
(16:49):
having tried so many differentthings and are able to finally
find relief.
Because we're not just handingthem a food elimination or a
supplement plan.
We've seen women who werebloated for 10, 20, 30 years be
able to enjoy food again.
We've seen people that thoughtthat they could never eat gluten
again, being able to eat glutenor people that hadn't eaten out
(17:11):
at a restaurant in years able todo that again.
But most importantly, I thinkthe biggest win is energy,
confidence, and joy that return.
So here is what I want to leaveyou with.
Instead of seeing your symptomsas your enemy, they are signals,
(17:33):
they're your body waving the redflag and asking for help.
You can either fight againstthose symptoms, you can numb
them, ignore them, silence them,or you can lean in and listen to
them.
And when you listen early, hearing them or healing them.
Is so much easier.
So I want you to just thinkabout like, what is the cost of
(17:56):
my GI issues and am Ioutsourcing a lot of healing to
the belief that either I can'theal, I've already tried
everything, or this supplementplan didn't work for me, and
realizing that there's probablya lot of gaps in your treatment.
(18:17):
One year from now, you caneither be chasing symptoms, you
can be free from them, but itreally truly starts with your
belief that.
It is possible and that you canheal regardless of how many
symptoms you have.
So start when they're whisperingyour gut and your future self.
Well, thank you.
(18:37):
Just felt compelled to sharethis because of my own
experience and just how manyclients are coming to us so sick
because they've waited.
For so long.
So don't let that hold you back.
And as always, I'm here with anyquestions that you have.
See you next week on the nextepisode of the Love Your Gut
(18:57):
podcast.
