Speaker 2 (00:15):
Welcome back to Market it with Atma, where we
share the tips, tools andstrategies to help your business
be successful.
Strategies to help yourbusiness be successful.
I'm your host, Dori, and todaywe have on the show one of the
three owners of North TexasPlumbing Authority, Mr Todd Shaw
.
Welcome, Todd.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Hello, thank you.
Thank you for having me.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
You're very welcome.
So you have come onto the showas actually one of Advent
Trinity's clients right.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yes, that is correct.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
That's awesome.
So can you tell our audience alittle bit about how you came to
be a part of North TexasPlumbing Authority and where you
are now?

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Well, I'm actually the founder of it.
I've been in the contractingindustry here in the DFW area
for the last 15 years and I gotto know several contractors and
plumbers over the years becauseI specialized in property
casualty, okay, and so with thatI got to know a lot of
contractors, specifically inplumbing, and my two partners

(01:16):
and I have a combined 75 plusyears of experience.
The two partners that I haveboth have over 30 years
experience here in DFW aslicensed seasoned plumbers years
experience here in DFW aslicensed seasoned plumbers.
And myself, with my exposure toproperty casualty and dealing
with plumbers and repairs ofpeople's properties, I have 15
years here in DFW.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
So wow, and you guys did.
You guys don't cover onlyplumbing, you, you cover
commercial plumbing, residential, and you also have a
contracting service, correct?

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yes, we have a North Texas Contractor Services which
it's an umbrella for you knowall faucets of the customer
service industry.
When it comes to property, fromplumbing to HVAC, roofing and
so on.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
But we the plumbing aspect, the plumbing authority,
we specialize in the plumbingbecause of the experience that
we have and the knowledge that Ihave with the property casualty
end of it.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
That's incredible.
So, with 70 plus years ofexperience in the DFW area and
the expansion of DFW, how hasthat impacted your business over
time to make you want to expandinto all the different services
?
Was it a growth or was it kindof something you had in mind
from the start?

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Well, myself, I started out as the in property
casualty, specifically in waterdamage properties.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
And typically when someone's sustaining a water
damage that's from an interiorsource, a plumbing source, and
typically when someone'ssustaining a water damage that's
from an interior source, aplumbing source, the first thing
they think of is I've got toget this water stopped.
And who are?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
you going to call in order to do that?

Speaker 1 (02:51):
A plumber.
So plumbers would come out andassist them in their plumbing
needs and would see damage andthey would call my company, and
then I would go out and assisthomeowners and I had prior
knowledge of the insuranceindustry so I assisted them in

(03:15):
filing claims, collecting theirclaims and helping them file
their claims and just allaspects of it.
So from that area of expertise, with the exposure to property
casualty and insurance, I'vecome to realize what a lot of
people don't know is that a lotof these issues can be covered
by their homeowner's insurance.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Wow, that is something important to know.
Still to this day, they canstill have that covered.
And do you inform your clientsof that now?

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Absolutely, absolutely, yeah because more
than half of the instances arean insured loss.
If it's plumbing, they have abroken line under the home.
It's very costly to get underthe home and make access to fix
the problem area.
So all insurance companiesunderstand terminology and the
terminology is access and egressthat they use, and so unless

(04:05):
you're informed of that, unlessyou know something about that,
it's very difficult to deal withinsurance companies.
Because I think it's generalknowledge that insurance
companies they really, you know, they're really resistant when
it's time to pay out claims.
So unless you're able to reallytalk to them and understand how
your policy is written, a lotof people just would rather not

(04:25):
go through it and just be out ofpocket.
They have to get loans, borrowmoney, because a lot of times
these instances cost, you know, tens of thousands of dollars.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Incredible.
I've kind of I've had a coupleof friends.
They'll go and they'll findplumbers that'll do side jobs
and things like that and theyend up hurting them more than
they are helping them and thenthey'll have to hire someone
certified like you guys, yes tocome in and fix it all.
With that being said, um, Ithought a great part of your

(04:55):
business that you've implementedis you've implemented financing
right for these clients.
Yes, residential and commercialcorrect.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Uh, we, we offer financing.
We have a broker that has uhoffers uh financing through 17
different lenders wow so theydeal with all kinds of credit.
From the worst case scenariothe best case scenario, you'll
get financing, um, and so thatwill play a part in helping
folks who don't have that extramoney to pay for plumbing.

(05:23):
But also if, in the instancethat they file a claim, they
have a deductible they have tocover, which most of the time
it's a couple or severalthousands of dollars.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Right, like 1% Exactly 1%.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
So if you've got, you know, a value on your property
that's $250,000, you've got a$2,500 deductible.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
That's a lot for the working class On top of the
$10,000 plumbing bill that youjust got.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
A lot of people don't have an extra $12,500 in the
bank, so we have a very simplefinancing option process.
It's a 30-minute quick, softpull application and within 30
seconds they'll have a response.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
That's incredible.
So you're almost a one-stopshop for everything they need.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
The plumbing, the financing, the water damage,
even.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Assistance in filing claims.
A lot of people get intimidatedby adjusters because adjusters
start using the lingo thathomeowners don't understand
because, those policies werewritten to help confuse and
complicate things and they'recounterdictive because they say
in one part of a policy this iscovered and you read a few pages
over, they say it's not covered.

(06:33):
A few pages over yes, it iscovered.
If then?
But go to blah, blah, blah.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
So it's very complicated.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
It's written intentionally like that to
confuse the consumer, so thatthey will just be worn out and
worn down and eventually get toa point where they'll just take
whatever they give them or justsay you know, it's too much for
me, I don't want it and you knowthat's so true because I
remember my parents calling memany times saying, hey story,
will you come help me readthrough this or talk to this guy
?

Speaker 2 (06:59):
I don't understand, like, what are you saying?
And it's very frustrating tosee someone try to take
advantage of your family memberor your friends, even because
they're not knowledgeable.
And with your knowledge in thebackground, a lot of people
don't know that.
Some people just think you getinto the insurance, insurance
industry and then you go outinto a different world, but
you've really brought yourknowledge from each industry to

(07:21):
everything you do.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
It seems like Well, to put things into perspective,
several years ago I took aone-week course on policy
interpretation.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
One week to understand policy interpretation
and all the different instancesof contradiction and how they
trick and trip people up,because it's designed to give
them an out right and unlessyou're willing to go ahead and
spend more money and get alawyer or something like that.
Unfortunately, it's, it's justum, it's a situation where, over

(07:53):
the last uh two or threedecades, the insurance companies
have taken billions andbillions of dollars in losses
from all the catastrophic uhstorms and fires.
You know, you had Katrinaseveral years ago, you had
Harvey in Houston, you had Sandyon the East Coast, you had
multiple hurricanes justrecently in Florida.
You had Milton in NorthCarolina.
I mean, I would almost suspectthat the insurance companies are

(08:16):
encroaching upon a trillionplus dollars in losses in the
last 30 years.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
It's so sad, isn't it ?

Speaker 1 (08:21):
So you couple that with the fraud that takes place
also.
There's just only so much theycan take.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Absolutely.
So you kind of bring a piece tothese people that you're coming
out here to help.
And from what you've told mebecause I know a little bit
about the business, because youbrought it to us and we started
really understanding the contentin your new website is that
your service is now 24 hours.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
And you're accessible to anyone in DFW for 24 hours
right.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Well, we are accessible to anyone in DFW.
We like to market ourselves inthe mid and south DFW area.
In other words 183 and south.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Right.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Only because of the amount of ground that you have
to cover.
And we like to have a a goodresponse time um and be able to
get to the customer as soon aspossible.
Because we are centrallylocated here in south arlington,
we can reach those areas prettyquickly, effectively and easily
, versus having to go all theway up to, uh you know, like
denton or frisco in places innorth dallas.

(09:21):
we're just, uh, we would ratheremphasis on being able to help
somebody, um, you know, likeDenton or Frisco in places in
North Dallas.
We're just, we would ratheremphasis on being able to help
somebody you know, sooner ratherthan later, so to speak,
because a lot of people they arebeside themselves, they haven't
experienced anything like this.
You know if you've got sewerwater coming in the house, you
know the toilet's overflowed andthey just don't know what to do
.
It's in the middle of the night, so that is one of the things
that we do offer is that we're24-hour services.

(09:43):
There's no extra after-hoursservice fees.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Wow, that's incredible and the fact that you
set that expectation.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yeah, and it's to help people out, because a lot
of people get taken advantage ofwhen they're in a vulnerable
situation.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
They don't care, they just want to get it fixed.
And they don't care, they justwant to get it fixed and they
want to get back to their way oflife.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Absolutely so.
Here at Atma, I know you know,we use the Build Launch Grow
skill methodology.
Where do you think you are inthat methodology?
Build Launch Grow.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
So you know, we've been in business now for
collectively about a year and ahalf or so.
Myself and my initial partnerstarted this about a year and a
half or so when we myself and myinitial partner started this
about a year and a half ago.
And then we brought in anotherpartner, larry, who's got over
30 plus years here in DFW andhe's got a vast array of
contacts and folks that he'sdealt with over the years, and

(10:36):
then the other managing partner,donnie.
He's got 30-plus years in thewhole DFW region.
So right now, collectively, bringing all of our experience
together, we're going through abuild stage.
So, we're building our businessbased on our referrals, our
past customers, our contacts andbuilding our marketing with.

(11:02):
Advent Trinity, of course, andso through word of mouth and
just reputations andrelationships that all of us
have embarked on and createdover the last for their case 30
plus years, me here in DFW for15 years we're in the build
stage, so y'all are helping usdo the marketing stage, and so
it's so.

(11:22):
We're just kind of gettingthings and we're going through
some exponential growth rightnow.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
We have anywhere between five to eight crews
going each day.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
That's awesome.
So in the build phase I mean,it's so important to have that
infrastructure built correctlyyou have put together the team
that has the experience, theknowledge and the understanding
and you've gathered a teamthat's going to help you build
that infrastructure digitally, which is how each business would
really structure it.
You have to have all your factsand all your variables in place

(11:53):
right yeah absolutely Doing itright the first time is going to
save you a lot of money in theend, I think.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
Yeah, I mean you have to the old saying you know
you've got to spend money tomake money, absolutely, and it's
a necessary, you know thing todo and have.
In order for you to besuccessful.
You have to have exposure andit's not like it used to be.
Yeah, Everything is online, everything is social media
marketing, multimedia marketing.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
And it changes every day, doesn't it?

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah, it does change every day, but I think it
changes in the sense that justexposure, because I think that
obviously it's social mediamarketing that's here to stay.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
It's never going to go away.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
It's the best way, the best form of communication,
the quickest way ofcommunication, and people are
getting more and more relyingheavily on it.
As far as for myself personally, you know I rely on reviews and
I rely on comments stars, allthat.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
And that's something to really focus on, because you
would say that the primary bulkof your business and your new
clients come from referrals, which is huge, because who
speaks about you speaks volumes.
When you have a friend tellingyou you need to use this person,
because I've used them, it'shuge.
And then we just have to playcatch up with the digital side,

(13:16):
right.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
That immediate brand expansion.
Exactly, and that's where weall come in, because my partners
and I, donnie and Larry andmyself- you know we've got a lot
of.
I guess hitting the beatexperience, so to speak, because
we've been out in the field andmeet and greet and knowing
people and just past customers, previous customers referrals.

(13:37):
But as far as the currentmarketing and the way things are
with social media platforms andmultimedia platforms, you
really need to have a companylike Advent Trinity that knows
what they're doing, has thecapability to do it and just has
the expertise and theexperience to help us to get to
that next level.
Because that is where we're atin society now.

(14:00):
It's not.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
No more yellow pages, no more phone books.
Yeah, to stand out as an actualbusiness.
You almost.
It feels like you have to do itthis way because anyone on that
has a social media account cansay they're a business, unless
you have it set up correctly asa business, right.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
Yes, I mean because anybody can be anybody, anything
they want.
That's right you know there'snobody there to verify it.
And um so you have to have aprofessional company like you
all to sort through all thenonsense and all the uh what do
you call them?
Spiders and robots and the AIand all that, and y'all have a
really good team that uh can umrecognize those features and

(14:37):
bypass them in order to get somereal organic marketing.
And so real people can get ahold of us and see us and
request our services, becausethere's a lot of nonsense out
there.
There's a lot of companies outthere that just maliciously will
try to take smaller companiesout.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
It's so sad and the referrals just between you and I
will be exponential.
I've invited you to a couple ofnetworking events and it's
because I trust you.
So the referral process stillworks.
It's just connecting withpeople that are actually going
to use your services.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Right, and then this it's really the same thing.
It's just using technology torefer.
Exactly so you've got in-personreferrals and then you've got
technology-based referrals.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Yeah, and with AI right now.
I mean, everybody loves AI tocreate that automation, but at
the end of the day, I want areal person that I know is going
to take care of me to meet inperson.
And that's where you guys comein.
You're real, you're authentic.
Everything's clean, nice andtidy when I see you and your
partners and that's important tome, when someone's coming into
my home.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
No, absolutely.
We've got all new equipment.
We've got all state-of-the-artequipment.
There's not a situation thatwe'll come across that we can't
handle.
We're fully capable in handlingevery aspect of plumbing and or
property casualty when it comesto, you know, damage from a
plumbing.
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
I'm so thankful we know you guys now for my own
personal needs.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
I'm really thankful to be here.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
So what's one bit of advice, before we go today, that
you would give our listeners?
If they have a burst pipe orsome kind of catastrophic thing
that has to do with theirplumbing happening in their home
, what's one piece of advice youwish that they knew beforehand.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
As a homeowner myself and for the thousands of
property casualties that I'vecome across specifically dealing
in the area of plumbing.
Just know that it's going tohappen sooner or later.
You're going to have some kindof water damage or water issue.
I tell people this all the timeyou can be in the same home for
30 years and you'll never havea fire damage, but you're going
to have a water issue.
I tell people this all the timeyou can be in the same home for

(16:39):
30 years and you'll never havea fire damage, but you're going
to have a water damage, specifically and especially here
in the DFW area, because we'reso prone to extreme drought and
torrential rains, so the groundis constantly expanding and
contracting that wreaks havoc onyour pipes.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Oh, I didn't know that.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
Absolutely, Because when the ground dries,
everything shrivels up and thenit swells up again.
So the pipe is going.
It's not designed to do that.
It's not designed to expand andcontract with the ground.
Just be prepared.
It's going to happen, but don'tfret.
That's why you have us.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
That's right.
And how can they reach you ifthey want to reach out to?

Speaker 1 (17:15):
you.
You can go to our websiteNorthTexasPlumbingAuthoritycom
or NOTXPAcom no text.
You can reach me at Todd atNoTextacom.
And our local telephone numberwe are.
That is a good thing about us.

all those tips.
It'll be invaluable to some ofour listeners, I'm sure.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Oh, I hope so and I'm sure it will be.
If you have a home, you havewater.
If you have water, sooner orlater it's going to be an issue.
