I'm announcing my first book "Bad Marriage Advice: 15 Myths that Are Making you Miserable," releasing on May 3rd to coincide with my 23rd wedding anniversary and my son's wedding day. The book challenges popular but potentially harmful marriage advice and offers better relational skills based on my experience as a marriage coach and interviews with couples married over 50 years.

• Written as a guide for my son's upcoming marriage, combining maternal wisdom with professional expertise
• Addresses common myths like "don't go to bed angry," "happy wife, happy life," and "don't sweat the small stuff"
• Explains why compromise is overrated and collaboration is the better approach
• Demonstrates how popular marriage advice often dampens communication between couples
• Contains practical communication skills applicable for newly married and long-term couples
• Designed to be relatable, entertaining, and immediately useful

If you have an audience who could benefit from better marriage advice, please reach out to me about featuring the book. Stay tuned for upcoming episodes that will dive deeper into specific chapters and concepts from each chapter.

Speaker 0 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to the Secrets of Happily Ever
After podcast.
I'm your host, monica Tanner, and today I have such a huge and
exciting announcement to make.
I am just doing a quickieepisode to tell you that I just
finished writing my first bookand I couldn't be more excited

(00:20):
to tell you all about it.
So the title is Bad MarriageAdvice 15 Myths that Are Making
you Miserable.
I just wanted to tell you alittle bit about how this book
came to be and my motivation forgetting it done, and the reason
I didn't start talking about itearlier is because, in all

(00:42):
honesty, I was afraid I wasn'tgoing to finish it, but I had a
really, really good motivationand deadline, and that is that
my oldest son is getting marriedand I wanted to give him kind
of like a cautionary tale meetsgetting started guide.
It's all of my mama advice andwisdom that if I actually

(01:07):
thought he would sit and listento me for hours on end, I would
just give him all the thingsthat I've learned in my 23 years
of marriage and years and yearsand hundreds of interviews I've
done with other marriageexperts and couples who have
been married for over 50 years, which is a pet project that I

(01:30):
have.
I haven't quite figured outwhat I'm going to do with it,
but I have over 25 interviewswith couples that have been
happily married for 50 years andall of the advice that they
give, as well as years ofworking with couples as a coach.
So I have all of this wisdomwrapped into a book that is

(01:51):
short and sweet to the point.
It's meant to be witty andrelatable, and it's all of the
bad marriage advice that peoplewith the best of intentions give
to couples as they're gettingmarried.
And I think back when myhusband and I were getting
married and all the people werecoming through the line and
these couples that we reallylove and respect were telling us

(02:13):
little things that we shouldremember, several of which is
terrible advice I've learnedover the years.
Examples are like don't go tobed angry.
I lost so much sleep over thishorrible, horrible advice.
So that's just an example ofone of the things I talk about

(02:33):
in the book, but not to mentionadvice like don't sweat the
small stuff.
Happy wife, happy life.
If they loved me, they wouldjust know how to make me happy.
There are so many things thatwe cling to because we hear
people say them over and, overand over again and literally
couples come into my office andthey're miserable because of it.

(02:58):
So I've literally wanted towrite a book for over a decade
and I've always made the excusewhat do I know?
Who would read this book?
And now I know I've been doingthis long enough, I've helped
enough couples and I do have thebest of intentions to share my

(03:18):
heart and what I've learnedabout marriage with my son and
his beautiful new bride.
So the book will be up onAmazon on May 3rd that is my
23rd wedding anniversary and theday my son is getting married.
So cool, right?
It will officially launch onJune 3rd and I am looking for

(03:40):
ways to talk about the book.
So I've already booked tons andtons of podcasts, but if you
have an audience of marriedcouples or entrepreneurs or
anyone who could benefit fromhaving a better marriage, I
would love to come on and talkabout the book.
So please, please, reach out tome If you're interested in

(04:02):
getting an early copy of thebook out to me.
If you're interested in gettingan early copy of the book,
leaving a review on Amazon forme, giving the book as a gift to
some of your favorite marriedcouples, please, please, please,
let me know.
My goal is to get this book inas many hands as possible.
Like I said, I put my wholeheart and soul into it.
It's an easy read.

(04:22):
It should be entertaining, relatable I hope that you have a
few chuckles and I also put insome relational skills that are
so important for all of us, nomatter whether we've been
married for days or decades, toget good at, especially when it
comes to communication.

(04:42):
Now I will tell you, everysingle couple that has come to
see me at some point has saidthat their goal is to
communicate better.
And when we run through many ofthe bad marriage advice in the
book, such as happy wife, happylife, don't sweat the small
stuff.
If they loved me, they justknow A good wife keeps her

(05:05):
husband satisfied.
All of these terrible pieces ofadvice have one thing in common
, and that is that they dampencommunication between couples.
Another one I talk about inthere is you should learn to
compromise.
That, my friends, is the worstadvice.
It makes me cringe every time Ihear it and it's so very

(05:27):
prominent.
I'm going to teach you in thebook how not to compromise but
to collaborate with your partnerto get exactly more of what
both of you would like.
So, again, I put so much of myheart into this book.
I would love your help inpromoting it and getting it into
the hands of the people whocould use it, and just for

(05:50):
yourselves.
If you listen to this podcast,I'm assuming you're married, I'm
assuming you want a bettermarriage and I'm assuming you
could use better relationalskills that you can just put
into practice in your ownmarriage to improve your
communication, connection andintimacy.
So that's all I have for youtoday, but in the coming weeks

(06:11):
I'm going to be talking aboutsome of the content that's in
the different chapters of thebook.
So make sure you listen in nextweek, same time, same place.
And until then, happymarriaging, my friends.
