Unlock the secret to achieving balance between productivity and self-care with insights from my transformative journey from corporate leader to entrepreneur. In this episode of Maximize Your Day, I, Jessica Rosario, tackle the misconception that self-care is a luxury rather than a necessity. Sharing my personal story of burnout while managing multiple responsibilities, I reveal how intentional self-care not only restored my energy but also heightened my focus and creativity. Join me as I dismantle the myth that productivity and self-care are mutually exclusive, guiding you to incorporate self-care routines that enhance, rather than hinder, your business success.

Explore how ignoring self-care can lead to burnout, a phenomenon so prevalent that it's recognized by the World Health Organization. I dive into practical strategies to weave self-care into your life seamlessly, ensuring you can give your best to both your business and loved ones. With anecdotes from my experiences and those of clients, I illustrate how redefining self-care beyond traditional activities like manicures can revolutionize your approach to time management. By the end of the episode, you’ll have a toolkit to help you thrive without sacrificing your well-being or productivity.

Jessica Rosario, Executiv (00:02):
Hello and welcome to the Maximize
your Day podcast, a place forentrepreneurs who are building
their business in pursuit offreedom and flexibility to do
the things they love.
I'm your host, jessica Rosario.
I'm a New Yorker turnedFloridian who knows a thing or
two on how to effectively manageyour time while juggling
multiple priorities.
I'm an ex-corporate leader whowalked away from my nine to

(00:24):
five-ish to launch and grow mybusiness.
In this podcast, I shareinsights on mindset, business,
productivity, habits andstrategies to help you take
control of your to-do list andmaximize your day, which will
help you feel more confident andless overwhelmed and getting
more done in less time.
I'm so excited you're here.
Go ahead, listen in.
I'm so excited you're here, goahead, listen in.

(00:50):
Hey you guys, jessica here Intoday's episode, we are going to
debunk that self-care andproductivity are mutually
exclusive.
Spoiler alert they are not.
In fact, self-care is one ofthe most important areas that
help you enhance productivity, and any self-care expert out
there will know this, which iswhy it's so important that

(01:13):
inside of my Maximize your Daymembership, I have a mindset
coach that talks all aboutself-care and the impact on
productivity that helps themtruly hone into their skills,
feel like they're in control andrun their business like a boss,
and so I personally haveexperienced this firsthand.
I used to think that reallypushing harder and working

(01:33):
longer hours was truly theanswer to being productive, and
throughout the years, I realizedI had reached a point where I
was completely burnt out.
Completely burnt out, I wasstill in corporate trying to
manage.
Burnt out, completely burnt out, I was still in corporate
trying to manage a businessmultiple businesses, may I add.
Raise a family, do all thethings, be a wife, be a dog, mom
, right, do all the things.
And so I realized I wasn'ttaking care of myself, and so I

(01:57):
was giving my corporate role thebest of me and everything else
got what was left of me.
And so I committed tointentional self-care, and I
started to see an incredibleboost in my focus, understanding
my creativity and also my mostproductive times.
I actually realized at thatpoint that my most productive

(02:19):
times are in the morning.
If you want me to be reallycreative and really strategic,
don't give me something in theafternoon, because I'm not even
going to look at it.
And so I want to share with youhow you can balance self-care
and productivity without feelinglike you have to sacrifice
either one, and so let's juststart with the hard truth that
ignoring our self-care leads toburnout, and burnout can

(02:43):
absolutely wreck yourproductivity, make you feel
depressed, anxiety starts tokick in, and then all of that is
just because you decided toignore self-care, and so many
times when someone isexperiencing burnout, they start
to feel like I shouldn't focuson self-care because it's

(03:03):
selfish.
But the reality is that, inorder for you to help someone
else with their oxygen mask, youhave to fix yours first, and so
burnout starts to happen whenyou're just mentally,
emotionally and physicallyabsolutely drained and exhausted
.
It's not just about feelingtired.

(03:24):
It really impacts your abilityto think, to stay focused on
your goals or even to be able togive the people that you love
the best of you.
Did you know that burnout canreduce workplace productivity by
up to 40%?
And also, according to research, 77% of employees have

(03:46):
experienced burnout at theircurrent jobs?
That's absolutely insane, andso the World Health Organization
has even recognized burnout asan occupational phenomenon
because it's so common.
I've seen it happen withclients who try to power through
without taking care ofthemselves, incorporating any
time for self-care, and thisslows them down in ways that you

(04:10):
would not even imagine, inareas that they didn't even
think that it could.
Another thing is that self-care.
A lot of people automaticallyassume that self-care is getting
your nails done or getting amassage.
Self-care is so much more thanthat, and it was funny because I
had a conversation recentlywith my mindset coach and she
said to me when I go get mynails done, I have a hard time

(04:32):
because I cannot touch my phoneand respond to people that are
reaching out to me.
It is stressful for me.
That was a perfect examplebecause I have felt that way too
.
Sometimes my hands are both ina glove and I can't really touch
my phone.
Even when I go sit at a nailsalon and my hands are wrapped,
I have a hard time changing thevolume or answering a call or

(04:55):
trying to text somebody back orchanging the book that I'm
listening to, and so it doestend to create a little bit of
stress.
But in that time, the momentshe shared that with me for a
moment, I was like, wait aminute, I'm not going to do that
.
If I truly want to make thatself-care, then I need to
completely disconnect, and forme, disconnecting is a really

(05:16):
great way to take care of myselfand my mental health.
Now, one of the things thatI've done recently is I've
started to tell my closestpeople that I just need 30
minutes.
Just give me 30 minutes becauseI need to decompress, and so
they know that I just need towalk away.
I need to decompress, and sothey know that you know I just
need to walk away, I need todisconnect, I need to, you know,
just kind of recenter myselffor a moment before I go right

(05:38):
back at it.
But that has also helped me notonly set boundaries around my
time to protect my time, butit's also self-care.
So when you look at self-careas a risk, we start to
understand that if we don't takecare of ourselves, that is
truly the biggest risk.

(05:59):
And so how do you take self-careas a tool to help you enhance
your productivity?
Well, it looks different todifferent people.
You can either take regularbreaks, you can practice
mindfulness, you can go for awalk.
One of my mindset coachesalways says go outside and hug a
tree.
There's something about natureand grounding yourself that

(06:21):
really helps you restore andreset your mindset.
And when you come back tothings, you come back feeling
more focused, more creative, andstudies have even shown that
taking these short breaks duringthe workday, it really helps
increase your focus andproductivity.
So it's like it's almost likeyou know, like when your

(06:43):
computer is super slow and youhave to reboot it.
Well, think about it likeyou're rebooting your own system
.
You're rebooting your own self, your soul, and so it's an
opportunity for you to reset.
Another form of self-care, as Ishared earlier, is setting
boundaries, not only around work, but also life.
The people around you willlearn from it and they will also

(07:07):
respect you for settingboundaries to protect your time.
But now let's be respectful.
Make sure you respect otherpeople's boundaries too.
We want to give and we alsowant to get.
When it comes to settingboundaries of our time, it's not
just saying no, it's perhapsnot at this moment, or figuring
out some type of compromisewhere you guys can still work

(07:28):
together.
Part of setting boundaries isreally understanding.
Also, what are some practicaltips that you can have for your
own day, starting out withsetting your own intention.
What is your intention for theday?
So, whether that's a quickmeditation, it's a journaling
prompt or having a few minutesfor breathing exercises, there's

(07:51):
actual breathing exercises, guided breathing, podcasts, even
where you can just sit for amoment, perhaps one to three
minutes, and just practice somemindfulness in the mornings,
blocking time also fornon-negotiable self-care.
There are clients that I'veworked with who normally they're
like oh well, I can't blockself-care every single day.

(08:14):
Okay, well, what are some ofthe most intense days for you?
Are Mondays, the most difficultdays.
Are Thursdays the mostdifficult days?
Well, can you at least startthere?
Can you start blocking time, perhaps once or twice a week to
help you separate time for thatnon-negotiable self-care, start

(08:36):
to journal and debrief your dayto help you understand what
exactly worked that day comparedto the days that you don't
practice self-care.
I always tell my clients if it'snot on your calendar, it
doesn't exist, right, and so anon-negotiable self-care time
block has to be on your calendar.

(08:56):
People need to see that ifsomebody is going to book a
meeting, they need to see thatyou're not available.
Not only does it help keep youaccountable for your own
self-care, but it also helpsprotect your time from other
people who might have access toyour calendar as well.
Just incorporate some smallsteps throughout the day.
You don't have to do this big, elaborate thing.

(09:18):
Self-care, like I said, is notgoing all the time for a
manicure or a pedicure orgetting a massage, you can just
walk away, stretch, put on somemotivational music, take a short
walk I don't know, walk yourdog.
That actually tends to workreally well for me.
When I'm working from home, Iusually need to stop and let me

(09:38):
just take my dog and go out fora little bit and go for a walk,
do some guided deep breathingexercise in between your
meetings, and so it doesn't haveto be this huge elaborate thing
.
The most important thing ismaintaining consistency, because
when we're not consistent, that's where we're starting to
feel, where everything ischaotic.

(10:00):
You can't just practiceself-care once a month and
expect long-term results.
It's like anything else that wedo.
Right, you need to develop aroutine, a habit, to make it
sustainable and, mostimportantly, to make it part of
your life.
Whether it's personal orbusiness, it's part of your life
.
It's a new habit that you needto create.

(10:21):
There's some great tools outthere and apps that will help
you stay consistent as well.
For example, headspace is anapp for mindfulness, and there's
so many other apps that areavailable to you that will help
you with incorporating self-carein your daily routine but, most
importantly, stayingaccountable.
Setting those reminders on yourphone will also help you stay

(10:45):
accountable to the things thatyou said you're going to do.
One thing that has worked reallywell for me has been not
messing with my phone at night.
Usually, when I'm going to bed,I'm going to bed.
There were times that I wasjust scrolling, scrolling on
social media not that I don't doit from time to time, let me
tell you.
I just did it the other day.
I'm just on tiktok, justlaughing at stuff, I think,

(11:06):
jumped on for one second to showmy husband something that I had
seen, and all of a sudden Ifound myself 1520 minutes and
just scrolling on TikTok andlaughing.
But I realized that when I wasdoing that at night, I wasn't
sleeping.
Well, I wasn't.
I didn't have a deep sleep.
I felt sometimes like I wastired in the morning, and so
what I started to do was nolonger using my phone before

(11:28):
going to bed, and so the lastthing that I do is I check, you
know, make sure that my kids areokay.
We're empty nesters, and so Ialways like to see if my kids
text me or if everything is okayor if they need anything,
before I put my phone to chargeon my nightstand and it
automatically goes into do notdisturb after a certain point.
And so in the morning, firstthing grabbing my phone, making

(11:50):
sure nobody needed me, there'sno emergencies, everything is
good.
I put my phone right, makingsure nobody needed me.
There's no emergencies,everything is good.
I put my phone right back onthe nightstand and I walk away
to have my coffee, to have myreading, to go into my morning
routine reading my Bible, journaling or whatever other
practices that you may have, because it looks different for
different people, but those aresome of the routines that have
stuck with me.
I love to see when some of myclients have integrated

(12:14):
self-care in their daily lives, because it really helps them be
more effective, not only intheir lives or around their
family, but also in theircareers and in their business.
And so the most important partis listen.
Self-care is not a luxury.
It's truly a necessity foranyone who's looking to maximize
their productivity and avoidburnout.

(12:36):
Many people just automaticallyassume that self-care is a
luxury and they start to feelguilt around it because they
feel like they're being selfish.
But the reality is that bytaking care of yourself mentally
, physically and emotionally, you're truly setting yourself up
to perform at the best ineverything that you do, in all

(12:58):
areas of your life, includingyour business.
So here's your action step fortoday Schedule at least 10
minutes of self-care into yourcalendar.
Do this tomorrow.
When you schedule it and thetime arrives, put your timer on
on your phone and go for a quickwalk or do a short meditation,

(13:19):
or just step away, listen tosome music, go walk your dog, do
something that you're notfeeling like you're bogged down
or locked into your desk.
The reality is that you want tofeel that in that 10 minutes,
you did something thatcompletely had to do just with
you, and it completely separatedyou from the daily tasks and

(13:42):
the never ending to-do list.
This will help you, as a leader, as a business owner, create
sustainable systems to help yougrow, because now you're
incorporating self-care so thatyou can reset and refocus.
And so that's it, folks.
I cannot wait to hear how youhave been able to incorporate

(14:04):
self-care into your dailyroutine and, of course, share
any aha moments and any feedbackthat you have.
I can't wait to hear how thisepisode has helped you
