Dr. Michael Koren joins Kevin Geddings to discuss how clinical research sites like ENCORE Research Group and medical information companies like MedEvidence can build and give back to communities by sharing what they know. Dr. Koren explains that medical experts can help people understand complex topics such as obesity and the skin condition hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and help wash away some of the misinformation surrounding medicine.

Announcer (00:00):
Welcome to the MedEvidence Monday Minute Radio
Show hosted by Kevin Geddings ofWSOS St Augustine Radio and
powered ENCORE Research Group.
Each Monday morning, Dr.
Michael Koren calls in to bringyou the latest medical updates
with insightful discussions.
Medevidence is where we helpyou navigate the real truth
behind medical research, withboth a clinical and research

(00:20):
perspective.
So sit back, relax and getready to learn about the truth
behind the data in medicine andhealthcare.
This is MedEvidence!

Kevin Geddings (00:30):
Dr.
Koren is here with us.
He, of course, is a medicaldoctor, cardiologist, research
scientist and a part of ourfamily here at WSOS and we
appreciate him and, of course,he brings us some great
information.
You've got a lot going on,right, Dr.
Koren?

Dr. Michael Koren (00:44):
Yeah, we're doing a lot of educational
events this week.
We did a lot of educationalevents last week and it's
actually one of the things,Kevin, that we supply to the
community that I feel actuallyproudest of.
We do a lot of things for ourcommunity members, but helping
people really understanddifferent medical conditions and
what the possible options areare probably the thing that I

(01:06):
enjoy most and I certainly get alot of professional
satisfaction out of that.
This past week, Dr.
Kristen Stewart really gave aworld-class lecture our offices
in Jacksonville on somethingcalled hidradenitis suppurativa
or HS, and this is what peoplecall inverse acne.

(01:33):
So it's kind of a form of acnethat's worse than standard acne
and you get these little acneform lumps.
But sometimes people call itinverse acne because it actually
goes sort of inside the skinrather than just outside the
skin and cause these bumps andboils that can be painful and
disfiguring.
So she really just gave astate-of-the-art lecture.
I attended the lecture, Ilearned a tremendous amount and
we are running some studies tohelp people that may have this

(01:55):
condition.
So again, hidradenitissuppurativa or HS.
By the way, kevin, one of thegood things about going to
medical school is you learn topronounce these fancy words and
then come up with acronyms soyou don't have to say them
publicly like HS.

Kevin Geddings (02:08):
There you go.

Dr. Michael Koren (02:10):
That's all you need to say.
But, more broadly, ourorganization does work in many
different medical areas,including dermatology.
So, as we speak, we're runningthis HS study and we're also
running studies in more standardacne, including acne vaccine
studies that are superinteresting.
So we have a number ofphysicians from different
specialties that work in ourgroup and these are really

(02:31):
world-class people that provideworld-class information.

Kevin Geddings (02:35):
Yeah Well, so many different ways too, you
know, as a regular person outthere can participate in some of
this research, some of theseissues that we're talking about.
If you're dealing with aparticular chronic health
condition, I encourage you toreach out once again to ENCORE
Research Group, where you can,you know, find out ways that you
can participate in leading-edgemedical research.
Go to EncoreDocs.
com.
That's EncoreDocs.

(02:55):
com.
You've got an event coming upthis Friday too.
We're going to be talking aboutsome obesity issues, right?

Dr. Michael Koren (03:02):
Yeah, yeah.
So my colleague, Miciah Jones, who's a cardiologist in St.
Augustine a tremendous speaker.
I just love doing programs withhim.
He's so articulate and justgets his point across so well.
We're going to talk about theprotean manifestations of
obesity, and if you don't knowwhat the word protean means,
then I would advise you to cometo the lecture and you'll learn

(03:24):
all about that, which is superinteresting.
He's also a cardiologist, soyou'd have to imagine that
obesity has some implications incardiology and we'd encourage
everybody to learn more aboutthis.
And again, it's another exampleof community outreach where
people who have multiple medicalproblems, perhaps with obesity,

(03:44):
can learn what solutions areout there.

Kevin Geddings (03:47):
Yeah, Once again this is a free lunch and learn.
It's being done at WJCT, thepublic radio station up in
Jacksonville, right across thestreet from where the Jaguars
play football.
And you can register by justgoing to wjct.
org.
Wjct.
org, click on the events tab.
It's right there and you caneasily sign up.
So it's super easy.
I encourage you to attend.
I've been to one of these.

(04:07):
It was a lot of fun.
You learn a lot, you're in andout, parking is super easy.
I know that's an issue for someof our listeners and, to be
honest, in the middle of the dayit's pretty easy to get up to
Jacksonville for these kind ofevents.
Dr.
Koren, any other thoughts?

Dr. Michael Koren (04:22):
Well, you usually bring up MedEvidence at
this point.
I always appreciate that andthat's been also very gratifying
.
Our viewership and listenershipis growing rapidly in
MedEvidence and the feedback I'mgetting is that it really
provides medical information ina way that's different from

(04:43):
anything else out there andhaving knowledgeable physicians
talk about an issueconversationally and then being
able to eavesdrop on them is areally super effective way to
understand really what's goingon in the medical area.
That's free of commercial biasand really gets to the heart of
the issue about what decisionscan I make for me and my family

(05:03):
to maximize our way of dealingwith whatever the medical issue
might be.
So we'd encourage people tocheck out MedEvidence.

Kevin Geddings (05:11):
Yeah, no, absolutely.
I know a lot of you will go tothe Internet looking for
information about a particularhealth situation, health
condition, a diagnosis thateither you or a loved one have
received truth behind the dataand they provide information for

(05:35):
you on all sorts of greatdifferent platforms that are
just super easy to use and, ofcourse, you can trust.
You know you're going to trustwhatever you see on medevidence.
com.
Dr.
Koren, we appreciate your timethis morning.
Thank you.

Dr. Michael Koren (05:46):
It's always a pleasure.
Kevin, have a great week.

Kevin Geddings (05:47):
All right, you too.
