Announcer (00:00):
Welcome to the MedEvidence! Monday Minute radio
show hosted by Kevin Geddingsof WSOS St.
Augustine Radio and poweredENCORE Research Research Group.
Each Monday morning, Dr.
Michael Koren calls in to bringyou the latest medical updates
with insightful discussions.
MedEvidence! is where we helpyou navigate the real truth
behind medical research, withboth a clinical and research

(00:20):
perspective.
So sit back, relax and getready to learn about the truth
behind the data in medicine andhealthcare.
This is MedEvidence!

Kevin Geddings (00:31):
Dr.
Michael Koren joins me.
He is, of course, a medicaldoctor, cardiologist, research
scientist and he heads the showENCORE Research Group.
They do leading-edge clinicalmedical research and they have
offices right here in St.
Augustine in the Weststonebuilding next door to UF Flagler
Hospital.
Good morning, doc, how are you?

Dr. Michael Koren (00:48):
I'm doing well, Kevin, are you dry?
Did you survive the weekend?

Kevin Geddings (00:52):
Yeah, yeah, we're fairly dry.
We've had some interestinglightning strikes here at the
radio station in the last hourand a half or so.
That always gets our attention, you know, since we have a big
stick behind us that sticks inthe ground.

Dr. Michael Koren (01:04):
We lost power over the weekend, but of course
it was right in the middle ofworking on a manuscript.
but other than that,

Kevin Geddings (01:13):
Well, it has to happen then.

Dr. Michael Koren (01:16):
Exactly.

Kevin Geddings (01:16):
Yeah, so what do you want to share with us this
morning?

Dr. Michael Koren (01:20):
We are about to start a really interesting
study that I'll bring to yourattention, and it's a study that
involves resurfacing orablation of the duodenum to
treat diabetes and obesity, andwe're doing it in Jacksonville,
but we'll be inviting peoplefrom all over the First Coast

(01:40):
area to be part of this, as amatter of fact, we will be the
people doing it throughout NorthFlorida, so it'll be people
from throughout North Florida, probably from Pensacola to
Daytona Beach and anywhereeverywhere in between, that'll
be coming to our group ofcenters to be part of this
program.
Snd what it involves is superinteresting.

(02:01):
As you know, we have an obesityepidemic and we have some
information from gastric bypasssurgery showing that when people
have that surgery done theirdiabetes gets much better and,
of course, they lose weight.
But unfortunately, gastricbypass surgery is a big
procedure and because it's apretty big procedure there are

(02:22):
more complications and it's moreexpensive and it's not been
something that a lot of peoplehave been able to get easy
access to.
So people looked at this andthey said, okay, is there a way
that we can get the effects ofgastric bypass surgery in a much
simpler way?
And they came up with atechnology that involves just
doing an endoscopy which issomething that most people have

(02:44):
had by the time they're 50 or 60, where somebody puts a probe
either in your mouth, into youresophagus and stomach or through
your rectum to look at yourcolon colonoscopy.
That technology is calledendoscopy and we use an
endoscope to change the surfaceof the duodenum, so it doesn't
absorb glucose and othernutrients quite as well, and

(03:08):
we're finding that thisprocedure can have profound
effects on reducing blood sugarand also helping people lose
weight.
It's been now done in severalhundred patients, and we're
starting the program here in ourresearch centers in North
Florida.
We're super excited about it,and we invite people that either
have diabetes or are overweightor both, or people who are

(03:30):
interested in this technology,to give us a call and find out
more about it.

Kevin Geddings (03:33):
Well, hey, you can do that.
You can call, of ENCOREResearch Group the number here
locally, 904-730-0166, and justmention what Dr.
Koren was talking about andthey'll help you out.
There's actually live humanbeings based here locally that
will answer any concerns, anyquestions you have about
participating in clinicalresearch.

(03:53):
I have done it.
Karen on our team have donethis.
We had great experiences.
Highly recommend you learningmore call ENCORE Research Group
at 904-730-0166.
And if not, this study.
There are so many others goingon that we don't have time to
mention You'll get a sense ofthose as well.
You can also go to the websiteto connect with them at
encordocs.
com.

(04:14):
Encordocs.
com.
And speaking of websites, talkto us about medevidencecom, Dr.
Koren.

Dr. Michael Koren (04:21):
Yeah, thank you for bringing it up.
We're getting a lot of tractionlately.
It's super interesting.
We've had medical students fromaround the country mention that
they're using it as a sourcefor medical information.
And as you and I have talkedabout, Kevin, there's so much

(04:46):
information out there that is ofquestionable value for people.
Most of the information thatyou get, either using AI engines
now or using Google, will giveyou information that's slanted
towards selling a product.
What we've done withMedEvidence! is just have two
knowledgeable people talk aboutan issue and we may not agree it
perfectly, but people get asense for what's true and what's
not true based on thesediscussions and we've now had
them with multiple veryhigh-profile people and people

(05:08):
are giving us incrediblypositive feedback that they have
a much better understanding ofan area based on these
discussions.
So it could be about vaccines.
It could be about whether ornot alcohol is safe.
It could be about cholesterolor lipoprotein(a) or
triglycerides.
All these are areas that haveimportant health impacts and

(05:29):
that there's really confusingmessages out there in terms of
how the average person shouldaccess the technologies that are
available or the treatmentsthat are available.
So we help you understand allthat through this MedEvidence!
platform.
You can pick a discussion aboutlipoprotein( a).
This is a genetic conditionthat people have where they have
a particular type of badcholesterol that puts them at

(05:50):
risk for heart attacks andstrokes.
Well, how do you deal with that?
Is there a treatment for it now?
Can you get involved in aclinical trial that can help you
treat that in ways that are notavailable in the communities?
All these things are really, really important questions and
you can get the answers onMedEvidence.

Kevin Geddings (06:04):
You know.
it is a great resource, veryintuitive, easy to use and the
information is presented in avariety of great formats.
So we encourage you to.
You know, look at that.
I know so many of you arefrustrated by just bad
information, especially dealingwith your health.
That's, you know, on Instagramand Facebook and on other social
media platforms.

.

Dr. Michael Koren (06:34):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to that, and
then we have the big tournamentcoming to town, so it should be
an active week in NortheastFlorida.

Koren, for calling in.
