Dr. Michael Koren joins Kevin Geddings to report live from Madrid on new developments being presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting. This medical gathering, now the world's largest, is a showcase of developments in heart health and medicine. Dr. Koren notes excitement about progress in treating a genetic condition, lipoprotein(a), which raises cholesterol independently from diet and exercise. He notes that progress in this field is showing promise and that those with a family history of heart disease should have their lipoprotein(a) checked!

Announcer (00:00):
Welcome to the MedEvidence Monday Minute Radio
Show hosted by Kevin Geddings ofWSOS St Augustine Radio and
powered by ENCORE Research Group.
Each Monday morning, Dr.
Michael Koren calls in to bringyou the latest medical updates
with insightful discussions.
Medevidence is where we helpyou navigate the real truth
behind medical research, withboth a clinical and research

(00:20):
perspective.
So sit back, relax and getready to learn about the truth
behind the data in medicine andhealthcare.
This is MedEvidence!

Kevin Geddings (00:30):
Joining me live on the studio line, usually on a
Monday, but you know yesterdaywas a holiday.
It's Dr.
Michael Koren, medical doctor, cardiologist, research scientist
and a big part of our familyhere at WSOS and we appreciate
him especially taking time outtoday adding a little
international flair for us.
Joining us live from Madrid,Spain, right, doc?

Dr. Michael Koren (00:51):
I am.
I'm at the European Society ofCardiology meeting, and this is
now the biggest medical meetingin the world.

Kevin Geddings (00:59):
Wow.

Dr. Michael Koren (01:00):
You can hear the European sirens in the
background.
That's pretty good.
Someone passed out in a meetingbecause it's so crowded.

Kevin Geddings (01:07):
So what's the buzz?
I mean, if we're going back toyour days of maybe writing for
the high school newspaper, whatwould be the headline coming out
of this European medicalconvention?

Dr. Michael Koren (01:18):
Well, there are a lot of different headlines
, but the thing that interestedme most I think could be
arguably the biggest headline isall the excitement around the
treatments that are on thehorizon for lipoprotein( a).
As you know, that's a form ofbad cholesterol that's
particularly dangerous, and it'sa form of bad cholesterol that
we have not had a treatment for,but that all should change

(01:40):
within the next year.
So there's a huge amount ofexcitement about medications
that will shortly becomeavailable, a lot of speculation
about the results of theclinical trials that, by the way
, all of our folks in NortheastFlorida are participating in and
can still participate in.

Kevin Geddings (01:58):
Wow, Great opportunities there, and they
can participate in that ifthey've been diagnosed.
But there's also a fairly easytest that you can get to see if
you have this particular heartissue right.

Dr. Michael Koren (02:06):
Absolutely.
We're more than happy toprovide, free of charge, a test
for lipoprotein( a), which is agenetic type of cholesterol
disorder, and if you have afamily history of heart disease
at an early age, say before theage of 65, I would certainly
encourage you to get tested, either with us or someplace else
, because not knowing isprobably the worst thing you can

(02:26):
do at this point, particularlywith these new treatments on the
horizon.

Kevin Geddings (02:31):
If you would like to participate in that
study or you know someone who isdealing with that particular
issue.
You should also know that thereare clinical trials going on on
a wide range of differenthealth issues, everything from
something as common as the flushot to what we were just
speaking about, and you canlearn more about that by going
to EncoreDocs.
com EncoreDocs.
com, E-N-C-O-R-E, docs.

(02:53):
com.
So, Dr.
Koren, I would imagine even inEurope and you're in Madrid
right now they have an issuewith misinformation in the
healthcare space as well.
Are you introducing them toMedEvidence?

Dr. Michael Koren (03:06):
They absolutely love MedEvidence and
actually the most fun part ofthis whole journey for me is
I've been showing MedEvidence topeople here in Europe and they
love it.
So I actually have met five toseven physicians here in Europe
that want to be part of theMedEvidence family.
So we'll be doing lots ofpodcasts in the near future
based on people I've met herein Madrid at the European

(03:28):
Society of Cardiology.
So I'm super excited about it.

Kevin Geddings (03:31):
Yeah, yeah, You'll have to start doing some
of these in French.
You know we'll work on yourlanguage issues.

Dr. Michael Koren (03:36):
Yeah, that'll take a lot of work but, it'll
be a worthy project.

Kevin Geddings (03:42):
Well, we appreciate you taking time out
from your time in Spain.
Safe travels coming back hereto Northeast Florida and we'll
see you soon, okay.

Dr. Michael Koren (03:50):
Sounds great.
Talk soon, bye-bye.
