Melissa (00:01):
Hi teacher friends.
This is Melissa from Melissaand Lori Love Literacy, and
today I'll be talking aboutdevelopmental language disorders
, often called DLD.
We discussed developmentallanguage disorders in episode
166 with Tiffany Hogan, whereshe discusses language
comprehension.
So you might be wondering whatis a developmental language

(00:23):
disorder?
A developmental languagedisorder is a brain-based
neurodevelopmental diversity, such as autism or dyslexia or
dysgraphia.
One in 14 children are bornwith a DLD and it's often
genetic.
Students with DLD are six timesmore likely to have reading
difficulties.
Dld is a brain variation thatmakes it difficult to learn

(00:46):
language from their environment.
Dld is different from dyslexiabecause dyslexia is a disorder
associated with the writtenlanguage and DLD is a disorder
associated with the acquisitionof spoken language.
So what are somecharacteristics associated with
DLD?
Some children are mislabeled asshy or hesitant, distant,

(01:09):
standoffish.
Other students with DLD showsocial skills or reading as
strengths, and those strengthsactually help to hide the fact
that they're having struggleswith language.
Dld and me online writes thatstudents with DLD may have
difficulty finding the rightwords, talking about events,
answering questions,understanding information,

(01:31):
paying attention or socializing.
So it can be difficult to knowwhen students have a DLD, but if
you suspect that your childdoes reach out to your school's
speech-language pathologist orSLP to request a language
screening or valuation as soonas possible.
Tiffany Hogan recentlypublished an article about

(01:51):
developmental language disorders, where a lot of the information
we shared today comes from.
You can find that articlelinked in the show notes, along
with other resources.
So check out that article anddefinitely check out episode 166
with Tiffany, where she sharesa lot more information about
this.
Can't wait to keep learningwith you.
