In this episode, Jae meets Penelope, a dedicated and loving prison girlfriend of a man given a sentence of 73 years as a juvenile. From meeting at a quinceañera and getting caught making out in the back at 14 to many years later rekindling those sparks in the visiting room of a California prison, Penelope tells the story of their love and shares what makes it beautiful and worth all of the difficulties they may face.
Beyond her love story, Penelope opens up about the other sparks that her relationship ignited, the passion she has developed for advocacy. Her will to help her man led her down a path of learning about state laws and pushed her to join organizations to grow her knowledge, not realizing that she would be using that voice in other areas too. With the new fears arising in the country regarding mass deportations, ICE and immigration rights, Penelope shares her personal experiences and what she's felt in her community, but also how she has used her newly gained experience to try and do what she can with the voice that she has.
