Well, you go, get your brotherand your sisters and I will tell
you a story.
Welcome to Devotions with DrPapa.
Gather around, grab your Biblesand let us look into the
written Word, which reveals tous the living Word which is our
(00:41):
Lord Jesus Christ.
Today we are in chapter 3 ofGenesis.
We're reading verse 1 inchapter 3.
Now, the serpent was morecrafty than any beast of the
field which the Lord God hadmade.
And he said to the woman Indeed, has God said, you shall not
(01:06):
eat from any tree of the garden.
If this were a movie script, the scene would suddenly change
from a lush green garden withbutterflies and colorful
songbirds and two carefreelovers in chapter 2, to dark
(01:31):
clouds, heavy foreboding musicand a deep, slow baritone voice
announcing, announcing.
(01:55):
Now the serpent was more craftythan any beast of the field
which the Lord God had made.
This immediately brings upmultiple questions when did
Satan come from?
How did he so easily beguileEve and where was Adam?
(02:17):
In Psalms, chapter 104, verses 2through 5, let me read a
scripture to you very quickly,Psalms 104, verses 2 through 5.
Let me read a scripture to youvery quickly, Psalms 104, verses
2 through 5.
The Bible says Coveringyourself with light as with a
cloak, stretching out heavenlike a tent curtain.
(02:39):
He lays the beams of his upperchambers in the waters.
He makes the clouds his chariot.
He walks upon the wings of thewind.
He makes the angels hismessengers, flaming fire his
ministers.
So you see immediately that theangels were created probably on
(03:07):
the first day and before thethird day, and they were called
the host of heaven.
So probably not before Godcreated the heavens.
So these angels were there onday one and they observed as God
(03:34):
created the heavens and theearth.
Let me read to you from Job,chapter 38.
Job, chapter 38, verses 4through 7.
Now listen to this Job 38,verses 4 through 7.
Now listen to this Job 38,verse 4 through 7.
Where were you when I laid thefoundations in the earth?
Tell me, if you haveunderstanding, who set its
(03:56):
measurements, since you know, orwho stretched the line on it,
or on what were its bases sunk,or who laid its cornerstone when
the morning stars that's areference to the angels when the
morning stars sang together andall the sons of God shouted for
(04:18):
joy.
You see, the angels were therewhen God laid the foundations of
the earth.
So when did Lucifer, referredto as the day star, go wrong?
When did Lucifer go wrong?
(04:39):
Lucifer is referenced in twopassages of Scripture Isaiah 14,
verse 12 to 15, which is aprophetic warning to the wicked
king of Babylon.
But the denunciation of thatwicked king goes goes further,
(05:02):
to denounce the evil spirit thatempowered and possessed that
king, possessed his body and hisspirit State.
Much like you have fallen fromheaven and I will ascend to
(05:26):
heaven and I will be like theMost High God couldn't be
attributed to a mortal king.
These statements are attributedto Lucifer himself.
The same evil spirit isaddressed by another prophet, in
(05:46):
Ezekiel 20, verses 13, 15, and17, and reminds us that he had
been perfect in his ways andstrayed.
Well, he stayed that way untilat least day seven, when God
(06:12):
rested and he declared thateverything was very good.
So, after God created theheavens and the earth, he
created all the angels.
Until day seven, the creation, including the angels, was
perfect, Lucifer was perfect andeverything that God made,
(06:35):
including Lucifer, was very good.
But now we have to play the dark, sinister music because,
shortly after day seven, thescripture informs us that
Lucifer's heart was lifted upbecause of his beauty.
(07:01):
Like many young women who fawnover their image in the mirror,
whispering mirror mirror on thewall, who's the fairest of them
all?
Or like many young men who flextheir youthful muscles and
preen in front of the mirror, impressed with their young
(07:22):
physiques.
And like intellectuals who areimpressed with their learning
and knowledge.
Or like the wealthy who are sopleased with their accumulated
riches.
Or like politicians who aresmugly proud of their political
influence.
(07:42):
Just like them, Lucifer's heartwas lifted up with arrogance
and pride because of his beauty, which corrupted his wisdom by
reason of his brightness, iswhat the Scripture says.
(08:04):
Lucifer deceived himself intothinking he could be like the
Most High God, forgetting thathe was a created being himself,
Further deceiving himself intobelieving that he could lead a
(08:26):
successful rebellion against theMost High God.
He led one-third of the angelsin a rebellion which was
instantaneously suppressed andcaused himself and his followers
to be cast down to the earth.
Revelation 12 and verse 9informs us that Satan is the
(08:52):
deceiver of the whole world.
Is it any wonder that earthlykings and potentates share the
same conceit and pride as thegreat deceiver and exalt
themselves as God and attempt toexalt their thrones above the
(09:16):
stars of God.
Nebuchadnezzar learned hislesson for attempting such
foolishness.
Why do the heathen rage and whydo the peoples imagine vain
things?
What was Satan's motivation?
(09:36):
Have you ever wondered that?
What was it that motivatedSatan to rebel against God?
Was it just lust for God'splace and position To be like
God?
Or was there more?
I suspect there was envy, jealousy at what man was given.
(10:08):
You see, man was made in theimage and likeness of God and
man could reproduce after hisown kind.
You understand that neither ofthese was true of angels.
Angels were not made in theimage of God and angels could
(10:29):
not reproduce.
Even though there was a hugenumber of angels, they could not
reproduce after their own kind,Provoking envy in the heart of
Lucifer.
Perhaps this played a part inhis rebellion against God, this
(10:53):
envy-slash-jealousy in his heart, jealousy in his heart, and he
was cast down to the earth andbecame the accuser, the
adversary, the one who slanderedGod in all of his purposes.
The day star became the oldserpent, the most subtle of all
(11:22):
beasts of the field.
Now, when I was in my medicalresidency, I had a medical
doctor friend.
His name was Frank, and he andI would pray together at
lunchtime, just about every dayfor two years in my residency,
at lunchtime, just about everyday for two years in my
residency.
And when we prayed he would saythis in his prayer he would
(11:51):
almost always say Lord, don'tlet me be deceived Now.
I was young at the time, probably 26, 27 years old and
every time he prayed that Ithought that was an odd prayer.
But as I've gone through mylife, over 40 plus years since
then, I've realized that was avery wise and discerning prayer,
(12:12):
Because you see, over thecourse of my life, probably just
like you, I've been deceived.
I've been deceived by otherpeople, I've been deceived by
Satan, the enemy of my soul, andI've been deceived by my own
lower nature.
Can you identify with that?
Can I get an amen?
(12:33):
Yeah, I see that hand.
You see it's a good dailyprayer.
The Bible says that we shouldwatch and pray lest you fall
into temptation, lest you fallinto deception.
(13:04):
Theologians speculate about thenext part of this verse, because
the Bible says that the serpentspoke to Eve.
Does that seem odd to you thatan animal, a creature speaks.
Well, theologians can onlyspeculate here.
Did all the animals speak?
(13:24):
Or was it just this serpent?
You know, Balaam's donkey spoketo Balaam many, many years
later.
Did all the animals speakbefore the fall of man and
before all of creation wascursed?
And what about the serpent?
(13:46):
Did he stand upright?
Did he look her in the eye?
Did he walk upright?
And he must have been adazzling and beautiful creature
before he was cursed and beforehe was condemned to crawl on his
belly and eat dust.
(14:07):
The folks who study zoologists, the zoologists who study the
creatures, they say that theserpents have vestigial limbs
and perhaps before the fall ofman the serpent did stand
upright.
Maybe he did speak, Maybe allthe animals could speak before
(14:33):
the fall of man, before thecurse, before all of creation
was changed by the fall of man.
It's obvious that greatphysiological changes occurred
in both man and animals due tothe curse of sin.
(14:56):
All of that's just theologicalspeculation.
We really do not know.
Beautiful creature was the well?
(15:25):
He made this insinuation thatsomething that God had said was
not true and this had neveroccurred to Adam and Eve, that
the creature could questionGod's Word.
And he said to them Indeed, didGod say?
Did God really say?
(15:47):
And did you catch that mocking, superior condescension that was
in his voice?
And that same technique is usedby Satan and his emissaries
(16:09):
ever since to cast doubt in theminds of folks like you and me?
The implication in the questionwas clear that God must be
withholding something good fromyou, dear Eve.
(16:29):
And why would he do that, DearEve?
And why would he do that?
Understand clearly, dearlistener.
Sin always begins byquestioning the Word of God or
the goodness of God.
This was the lie with which theserpent deceived himself, and
(16:58):
he then deceived our originalparents and over time, he has
deceived both you and me.
Now, can I encourage you to praydaily?
And I'm going to encourage youto pray daily and I'm going to
encourage you to pray this andsay lord, I recognize that I am
(17:21):
weak and susceptible to beingdeceived.
Is that true?
Of course it's true.
Number two I recognize, recognize that Satan is more
expert at deceiving than I am atresisting.
And number three please, Lord, deliver me from temptation.
(17:45):
Isn't that what Jesus taught usto pray in the Lord's Prayer?
Lord, deliver me fromtemptation, Lord, deliver me
from being deceived.
I think if we were to pray thatprayer every day.
It would probably be a blessingto every one of us.
(18:08):
Let me go through those threeagain, Dear listener.
Let me encourage you, Lord.
I recognize that I am weak andsusceptible to being deceived.
Let me go through those threeagain, Dear listener.
Let me encourage you, Lord.
I recognize that I am weak andsusceptible to being deceived.
Number two I recognize thatSatan, the enemy of my soul, is
more expert at deceiving than Iam at resisting and recognizing
(18:29):
temptation, recognizingdeception.
And, Lord, please deliver mefrom temptation, Deliver me from
being deceived.
