After the demise of the Muein temples in the Alps, a wounded Aaron takes refuge in a monastery run by Dominican friars. There, he discovers a mystery regarding young monks being attacked while in Avignon, the assaults driving the acolytes into madness and suicide. Nevertheless, he hurries to leave the infirmary and rejoin Samantha. Meanwhile, Wimarc returns to the Alps and uncovers the devastation left by Renier and the Papal army. Joined by Samantha, they prepare for an inevitable confrontation with the oppressors, knowing they will come looking for survivors to translate the stolen texts.
