Speaker 1 (00:02):
head on over to
multiversetonightcom.
Tonight it's the end of theyear, closeout of news all that
and more on this edition ofmultiverse tonight comic books,
sci-fi, fantasy and more.
If you're looking for a roundupof geeky news, you're in the
(00:24):
right place.
This is Multiverse Tonight, andhere's your host, thomas
(00:49):
Townley.
Well, hello everyone andwelcome to episode 230 of
Multiverse Tonight.
I'm, of course, your host, thomas Townley, and well, not a
lot of stuff to talk about hereat the beginning of the show.
It's the weird time betweenChristmas and New Year's, so
(01:10):
there's not a lot going on, butwe do have a little bit of news.
So let's get right to it withthe Star Trek news, and Star
Trek news begins Earlier thisafternoon.
The former multi-time WWEWomen's Champion, becky Lynch,
(01:32):
announced that on the news oursocial media pages quote you
know, when you've already beenchampion of the world, there's
only really one place to go next, and that's to the stars, she
said in the video.
I'm so excited to share withall of you that I am joining
Star Trek Starfleet Academy aspart of the bridge crew Lads.
(01:53):
This has been the mostincredible experience acting
alongside just a spectacularcast and crew.
I cannot wait for all of you tocheck it out when it comes out
on Paramount Plus.
And hey live, long and prosper.
Unquote.
Now, starfleet Academy is uniquebecause it's the first Star
Trek project that won't focus ondeep space exploration.
(02:14):
Well, so did.
Deep Space Nine didn't focus ondeep space exploration either,
so I don't know who writes thesethings.
Instead, it takes place in the32nd century, san Francisco,
following the first class ofcadets attending the academy in
the early 100 years.
That brief description leaves alot to the imagination.
However, we know that PaulGiamatti will play an unnamed
(02:37):
villainous character in theseries.
The new series will take a moreYA approach and picks up after
the events of Star TrekDiscovery, which set the
timeline further ahead than everbefore.
It's clear they believe in thisproject as a setting stone for
the future, and before the firstseason has been out, it's
(02:57):
already been renewed for aseason two.
And now let's go on to the StarWars news.
Roger roger, star Wars newsbegins with the Acolyte star,
(03:19):
mayan Jackinto, revealing thatthree seasons were actually
planned for the Acolyte, theStar Wars show that,
unfortunately, was just canceled.
The actor appeared during a FanExpo panel hosted by Collider,
where the topic of his time inthe galaxy far, far away was
brought up.
When discussing the Acolyte, which was canceled after a
single season, joaquin Tose shedsome light on the showrunner,
(03:42):
leslie Hedlund's vision for theseries, outlying what she had
started in her mind for theacolyte Quote.
I remember Leslie's dream wasfor us to do three seasons, not
just this one.
But there's something abouthaving a finite ending of the
things that makes it so muchmore special.
So, yeah, I don't know if I'ddo it or not, but you know,
three seasons on a movie wouldhave been incredible, and I know
(04:06):
we had so much more to explorein that second season.
Unquote.
Now debuting over the summer, the acolyte marched, the Star
Wars franchise's first on-screendepiction of the High Republic
era, telling a story that wasset roughly 100 years before the
Phantom Menace.
While the show earned positivereviews from critics, it was
panned from one of the mostdecisive Star Wars projects in
(04:28):
the Disney era and wasofficially canceled in August.
Recently, disney Entertainmentco-chairman, alan Bergman, shed
light on that decision, statingthat the acolyte was too
expensive to greenlight for asecond season.
The show's only season had abudget of $230 million for eight
episodes.
And with that let's go on to theDC Comics News.
(04:50):
Dc Comics News begins with theCreature Commandos will fight
again.
The max animated series, written and co-executive
(05:11):
produced by DC Studios, co-chiefJames Gunn, has been renewed
for a second season on thestreaming platform.
The show about incarceratednon-human monsters conscripted
to join a covert black ops teammarked the first official entry
into the new DC Universe asfashioned by Gunn and co-chief
Peter Safran.
It earned wide acclaimfollowing its December 5th
(05:32):
premiere.
In the review, variety's AlisonHerman said that the series was
quote playful and irreverent asthe most loud-bearing franchise
entrants are pronderous andweighted down by obligations to
a larger narrative.
The season one finale willdebut on January 9th.
The first season's voice castincluded Andrew Varma as the
Bride, frank Grillo as RickFlagg, sr David Harbour as
(05:55):
Frankenstein, zoe Chow as NinaMazursky.
Let's go on to the Marvel ComicsNews.
Marvel Comics News begins withSony Pictures CEO Tony
(06:38):
Vincaniera recently telling theLos Angeles Times that, quote
Craven the Hunter is probablythe worst launch we had in the
nearly eight years he's been atthe studio.
Adding I still don't understand, because the film is not a bad
film.
Unquote.
Craven opened in theatersDecember 13th to a paltry $11
million, the lowest debut yetfor a Sony-released Marvel movie
.
The movie's current box officetotal is just about $18 million,
(07:02):
while its global haul is $43million.
These are more or lesscatastrophic results for a
superhero movie and cap off alackluster year for Sony's comic
book movies.
After Madam Web flopped with$100 million worldwide and Venom
the Last Dance became thefranchise's lowest grossing
entry, ben Kinera went on to sayquote let's just touch on
(07:26):
Madame Web for a moment.
Madame Web underperformed inthe theaters because the press
just crucified it.
It was not a bad film.
It did great on Netflix.
For some reason, the pressdecided they didn't want us
making these films out of Cravenand Mam Webb and the critics
just destroyed them.
They also did it with Venom, but the audience loved Venom and
had Venom a massive hit.
These are not terrible films.
(07:48):
They were just destroyed by thecritics and the press for some
reason.
Unquote Hmm, where to pick thatone apart?
Yeah, it wasn't the press.
These were just wholly badfilms.
I've seen enough enough, uh,reviews from actual, actual fans
.
And the biggest problem, ofcourse, is that you're taking
(08:12):
characters that are part of a ofa the Marvel Universe, the
Spider-Man Universe and you'rebreaking them out into things
that have nothing to do with theMarvel or Spider-Man Universe.
So you're just taking a nameand a bit of the concept and
trying to make a film out ofthat.
It doesn't work.
(08:32):
These characters are supposedto be part of the Spider-Man
universe.
When you take Spider-Man out, you're left with mush.
Anyway, let's go on to the geeknews.
And we begin Geek News withDoctor who producer Bad Wolf

I'm super excited but it's beenpretty quiet about the project.
I met with Nolan.
It was awesome.
We kind of loosely pitched whatit is and I'm sure when he's
ready he'll announce what it'sabout.
Does it ever seem like a goodidea to sign on to something
when you don't know what it'sabout?
(12:46):
Just not a good idea.
