Ever wondered why you're still exhausted despite a full night's sleep? Why those muscle cramps keep returning? Or why anxiety seems to lurk around every corner? The answer might be simpler than you think.

Magnesium – a mineral powering over 300 biochemical reactions in your body – could be the missing piece in your wellness puzzle. Yet remarkably, up to 80% of us are deficient without even knowing it.

In this eye-opening episode, we dive deep into what many health professionals call "the invisible deficiency." Guest Natalie Jurado - Founder - Rooted In shares her journey from debilitating insomnia and panic attacks to vibrant health after discovering topical magnesium. When conventional medicine offered no solutions and her doctor dismissed her symptoms as "normal aging," Natalie refused to accept that fate and instead uncovered a game-changing approach to magnesium supplementation.

You'll discover why different forms of magnesium matter tremendously (and which common type to avoid), how modern farming and water treatment have stripped this vital nutrient from our diets, and the fascinating connection between magnesium deficiency and the 34 symptoms of menopause. For women over 40, this information is particularly crucial.

Whether you're dealing with heart palpitations, muscle cramps, migraines, sleep troubles, or simply want to optimize your health, this conversation offers practical, research-backed strategies to incorporate magnesium into your daily routine.

I'm your host, antoinette Lee,the wellness warrior.
So here's the power ofmagnesium.
Magnesium is a powerhousemineral driving over 300
biochemical reactions in thebody, including those that
impact heart rhythm, bloodpressure, artery structure,

(01:51):
muscle function and cellularenergy.
The heart health benefits ofmagnesium include, but are not
limited to, preventingarrhythmias, irregular
heartbeats such as atrialfibrillation, keeping blood
vessels healthy, supportingnormal blood vessel dilation and
contraction, helping to reducedamage to the heart from

(02:13):
oxidative stress, boosting thegood HDL cholesterol, protecting
against type 2 diabetes,anti-inflammatory action, and it
also supports muscle recovery, heart health and mental clarity,
says Dr Carolyn Dean, author ofthe Magnesium Miracle.
She explains magnesium is vitalfor every system in the body,

(02:36):
from blood sugar regulation tonerve function.
Yet up to 80% of people may bedeficient, leading to symptoms
like anxiety, depression, insomnia and muscle cramps.
Before we cover the next topicin this episode, I want to
introduce you to the AdventureSports Lifestyle with what I
like to call a micro story aboutan adventure that I've had.

(02:57):
The Adventure Sports Lifestyleand my deep connection to nature
is essential to my good health.
So here's the story.
My much-loved service dog iscoming to the end of her life.
At times she runs at full speedlike a puppy, but more and more
her hind legs will give outjust walking across the living

(03:17):
room.
I don't know how to preparemyself to be without my faithful
friend and adventure buddy, butfor now I'm taking her on as
many adventures as I can.
I'm buying too many doggy icecreams and holding her while I
tell her how awesome she is andhow much she's loved this
weekend.
I took her paddleboarding onthe river.

(03:38):
She loved looking down onaquatic life.
I hope this inspires you to getoutside and adventure alone or
with your favorite furry friend.
Now back to the show wherewe're discussing a personal
transformation with magnesiumwith Natalie Girardo.
Hi, natalie, welcome to theshow.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Thank you so much for having me on.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
I'd like to talk about magnesium because it was a
topic that was near and dear tomy heart, because two
cardiologists just recommendedthat I begin taking magnesium.
So we'll get into that whilewe're here in this discussion.
But what inspired you to focuson magnesium after your health
struggles, and can you tell us alittle bit about your health

(04:23):
challenges?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Absolutely so much.
Like everything, every greatdiscovery right always starts
with a problem.
So I was dealing with somemajor issues in my life.
I struggled with severeinsomnia, sleeping about two
hours a night.
I dealt with anxiety.
I was dealing with regularpanic attacks, and all of this
was disrupting my life.
It was a struggle to drive acar, struggle to go grocery

(04:47):
shopping, struggle to parent mychildren.
So I really, really wasdesperate for answers.
So I did what any normal personwould do.
I went to the doctor, right, andshe was gracious enough to
offer me every single test underthe sun.
I felt like a human pin cushion.
She sent me to a ton ofdifferent specialists.
She took so much blood, ran somany tests, but at the end of

(05:09):
the day, when it was all saidand done, she sat me down, she
looked me straight in the faceand she said Natalie, there's
nothing wrong with you.
She said your blood work isfine, your tests are perfect,
You're absolutely healthy.
This is just a normal part of awoman's journey as we get older
.
This is just what we can expect.
And in that one sentence my lifecrumbled because I thought this

(05:32):
is what I have to live like forthe rest of my life.
I'm not okay with that.
On one hand, I was happy thatmy blood work was great, but on
the other hand, I thought, no, Ican't.
This is not what my future isgoing to hold for me, right?
So I started researching andlearning.
I started checking outdifferent types of medicine.
I looked into chiropractic andacupuncture and nutrition and
met with dieticians, and no onewas able to give me a clear

(05:55):
answer.
It wasn't until I stumbled uponmagnesium.
I had met somebody at a randomfarmer's market.
We started talking and she saidhey, have you tried magnesium
on your skin?
And at that point I would havestood upside down and said the
alphabet backwards If you toldme it would help me sleep at
night.
So I tried it and wow, what adifference.
I went from sleeping two hoursa night to sleeping six hours.

(06:16):
Anxiety started to go away andpanic attacks completely,
completely gone.
So I thought what's going on?
Why aren't we talking aboutthis?
Oprah should be talking aboutit.
She should be doing a specialon it.
Everybody should be talkingabout magnesium, and so I've
made it my mission to getmagnesium into the hands of
everybody who struggles to feeltheir best.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Wow, that's an incredible health journey.
Can you tell us about the over300 biochemical processes that
magnesium plays a part of in ourbody?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Absolutely so.
Interestingly, the studies areshowing even new research
showing it's closer to 600 to700 different biochemical
processes.
So it really is so unbelievablyimportant that we get enough
magnesium.
It's literally present.
Magnesium is literally presentin every single one of our
trillions of cells.
So without magnesium we wouldjust stop living.

(07:11):
There would be no more of us ifwe simply didn't have magnesium
.
So magnesium is involved innerve conduction.
It's involved in our musclefunction, our blood sugar.
It regulates our heart rhythm.
It does so many differentthings.
The problem is, when you're lowin magnesium, it often gets
overlooked.
It's called the invisibledeficiency because, since it's

(07:33):
involved in so many differentprocesses, when something isn't
working, especially ourhealthcare system, they often
correlate it with differentdiseases.
Instead of looking at magnesiumas a mineral and looking at
that foundational nutrition, let's talk about choosing the
right magnesium.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Navigating magnesium supplements can be daunting.
Different forms serve different, unique purposes, according to
Dr Jack Wolfson.
Here's what you can expect fromthe various forms of magnesium,
from the various forms ofmagnesium.
Magnesium malic consists ofmagnesium combined with
elemental malic acid.
This type of magnesium iswell-absorbed and supports

(08:12):
energy levels.
Malic acid supports energyproduction in cells and ease in
detoxing heavy metals from thebody.
It's a highly bioavailable formto support blood pressure,
heart rhythm, inflammation andnerve function.
Magnesine citrate is magnesiumbound to citric acid.
It has a high absorption level.

(08:33):
It's good for sleep and heartmuscle relaxation.
It aids in supporting digestionand improving constipation.
It's also highly bioavailablesupport blood pressure, heart
rhythm and the heart muscle.
Magnesine towering consists ofmagnesium and the amino acid

(08:53):
towering.
It's highly bioavailable to thecells and this formula is
exceptional for the heartbecause both magnesium and
towering can improve the heartmuscles function.
This one can increase ATP orenergy production in the cell,
which promotes heart health.
This type also reduces bloodpressure and increases insulin

(09:16):
sensitivity, further protectingthe heart.
Magnesium bisclinate consists ofmagnesium and the amino acid
glycine.
It has a high absorption rate.
It's also good for sleep andmuscle relaxation.
It has a calming effect on thenervous system.
This type has a non-laxativeeffect due to its high

(09:36):
absorption rate.
It's helpful in regulatingblood pressure, heart rhythms
and the cellular activity of theheart muscle.
Then there is magnesium orotate.
It's a compound made ofmagnesium and orotic acid.
This is one of the mosteffective forms of magnesium for
heart health.
This form can actuallypenetrate cell membranes and

(09:59):
deliver cell magnesium to theinnermost compartments of the
cells.
It's needed for heart health,as it can deliver magnesium to
these cells and help with hearttissue recovery.
It's also the best way toreverse magnesium deficiencies.
Together, all five of theseforms of magnesium work to
support the electrical activityof the heart and aid in normal

(10:21):
blood pressure regulation.
However, not all forms are equal.
Experts warm against magnesiumoxide due to poor absorption.
Natalie advises break up oraldoses throughout the day to
break up digestive issues andapply topical magnesium five
minutes before bed for targetedrelief.
Testing for deficiency istricky.

(10:42):
Standard blood tests onlymeasure 0.5% of the body's
magnesium stored in the blood, while most resize in bones and
tissue.
Nautilus suggests thatmagnesium RBC test is the best
for a more accurate picture andcorrelating results with
symptoms like muscle cramps orfatigue.
So here is how to boost yourmagnesium naturally.

(11:05):
Diet is a great start.
Magnesium rich foods includesleafy greens, nuts seeds, whole
grains and dark chocolate.
Includes leafy greens, nutsseeds, whole grains and dark
chocolate.
However, modern farmingpractice depletes soil magnesium
and foods.
Supplements or topical productscan bridge the gap, but

(11:25):
consistency matters.
Incorporate magnesium for dailyresults.
Here's more from Natalie onwhen and how to use topical
magnesium and why is magnesiumso important for women over 40?

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Oh, that's a great one, and this is the exact
experience that I went to.
I was right through my midlife, beginning of perimenopause,
dealing with all these symptoms, like so many women are.
The studies are showinganywhere from 70 to 80% of
people aren't getting enoughmagnesium every day in their
diet, so it's starting to showup across generations.

(12:01):
But for women in particular, once we start getting into
perimenopause and menopause, ourmagnesium demands skyrocket, so
we start to feel it so muchmore prevalently in our life.
Of the 34 symptoms that areassociated with menopause, those
are the same symptoms ofmagnesium deficiency, and I

(12:23):
don't think that's a coincidence.
We see things like bone loss.
Well, magnesium plays a vitalrole in strengthening our bones.
We see issues with sleep.
Magnesium plays a huge role insleep.
We see issues with hot flashes.
Magnesium helps regulate yourtemperature, helps regulate your
hormones, so we're seeing thisbeautiful overlap between the
two.
The other thing I realized inmy research is that other

(12:45):
countries around the world don'tsuffer through perimenopause
and menopause the way that we dohere in the United States, and
the countries that suffer theleast tend to have the highest
amount of magnesium in theirdiet.
So I mean, obviously, this isall correlation.
There's no causation here.
We can't say that this provesthat, but we can see that
relationship and start to workmore magnesium into our lives so

(13:07):
that we don't feel thosesymptoms quite as strongly.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Right, because one thing that American farmers are
starting to notice is thatthere's less magnesium for our
food to uptake as it's growing,so then we don't get that
additional magnesium that ourancestors would have gotten in
their diets, naturally.
Can you tell us a little bitabout the difference between

(13:33):
ingesting magnesium, I say as asupplement, and topical
magnesium, like in rooted inproducts?

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Absolutely so.
One of the things that you justsaid was just so important
we're not getting the sameamount of magnesium in this
generation that we did many, many years ago.
Right, number one it's notpresent in our food because it's
no longer in our soil.
The current farming techniquesthat we're using are there to
yield bigger crops, to yieldmore hardier crops and to put

(14:00):
more and more crops in that soilevery single season.
So we're no longer rotatingsoil.
We no longer have thosebeautiful minerals that we need
in our fruits and vegetables,basically.
So that's number one.
But another thing that ourancestors did many years ago
that we no longer do is swim instreams and rivers.
Back in the day, we would drinkmineral water from streams and

(14:23):
rivers, we would bathe inmineral water from streams and
rivers and we would get all thatmagnesium not only in our skin
but also we would drink it.
I mean, nowadays our water ischlorine, it's got chlorine,
it's got fluoride, it's got allthese chemicals, it's recycled
and all of those minerals andnutrients are just pulled right
out of the water that we bathein and that we drink.
So that's why, whenever youdrink, you know mineral water.

(14:46):
It's that fancy stuff at thestore.
That's like $5 a bottle, youknow.
But that water is rich inminerals because it's sourced
from springs, so we're no longergetting it in our skin like we
used to, and what I created wasa line of magnesium creams that
go on your skin and give youthis beautiful dose of magnesium
without any of the side effects.

(15:07):
Magnesium pills and powdersabsolutely have a role in our
health and in our nutritionalpractices, but one of the things
that is so often overlooked isthe role of magnesium on your
skin.
See my grandmother, myancestors used to always,
anytime you had a headache, anytime you weren't feeling well
, anytime you sprained yourankle, they would say go take an

(15:28):
Epsom salt bath.
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate.
It's the same stuff ourancestors used for years that
helped us so often.
So it really is overlooked.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Using that magnesium on your skin, natalie I was
already on board and am going tobuy some rooted in products and
I can't wait to ask you somequestions for recommendations.
But now I am 150% on board andhere's why I'm a water person.
I paddleboard, kayak fish andI'm always swimming in lakes and

(16:02):
rivers.
In fact, just yesterday it wasmy dog in the river and I
noticed I have arthritis Icouldn't think of the word.
I noticed that, since I havearthritis from my neck to my
tailbone because I broke my back.
When I get out of the water andit doesn't matter the time of

(16:23):
year, like this time of the yearthe water is warm, it relieves
the pain.
In the cooler early spring, when the water is very cold, it
relie the pain.
I'm wondering if, in additionto just the soothing nature of
water, it's the magnesium thattakes away my arthritis pain.
For 24 to 48 hours, like today,I don't have any back pain,

(16:47):
which is very, very rare for meisn't that amazing, like I feel
like nature always provides.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
It really, truly does .
See, I live um, I live in theSouth, I live in Florida, and
there's beaches.
You could throw a stone andwind up at a beach right, and
the beach is made up of 35%magnesium chloride.
The ocean is made up of 35%magnesium chloride and it's so
often that people go to thebeach.
They find their wounds healbetter, they find the
inflammation goes away, they'resleeping better at night, they
don't get a headache, they don'tget leg cramps.

(17:14):
All of those symptoms go awaybecause you're swimming in the
ocean and it's because of thatbeautiful magnesium chloride, of
course, mixed with the vitaminD from the sun.
We can't overlook that as well, because that is also wonderful
and glorious, but they're bothlike nature always provides.
I truly believe that.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Well, I really believe that your company and
your product is a godsend, andcan you tell us about it, how to
select it for the differentchallenges that we may want to
overcome?
What's the best combination ofproducts to use and when what
time of day do you recommend it?

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Absolutely so.
When I was on my magnesiumjourney, I started using
magnesium chloride sprays.
Right, and it's a concentrated, very a spray made out of salt.
So it was very drying on theskin and I would spray that all
the time and it would help.
It made a huge difference.
My life was changed, but I wasmiserable wearing it because it
itched, it, irritated, it, driedout my skin.

(18:10):
It was just very unpleasant touse and I couldn't use it on my
children because their skin wasso sensitive.
So I thought there's got to bea better way, there's got to be
a way to get this on my skinwithout these side effects, and
I started using differentmagnesium lotions that were out
there.
So I go on Etsy and find alotion.
I go, you know, anywhere Icould find magnesium lotion I
would use it.
But the problem is is that thoselotions didn't have therapeutic

(18:33):
amounts of magnesium, because,as a research girly myself, I
needed to get into the research.
I needed to know exactly howand why and what the science
said about using magnesium onyour skin.
And the science says that 500milligrams of magnesium chloride
used twice a day on your skincan raise your levels by close
to 60% in about 12 weeks.
Now to get that same kind ofgrowth using a pill or a powder,

(18:55):
it would take anywhere fromnine to 24 months.
So we're seeing that thattopical amount in correct doses,
can be highly beneficial andhighly therapeutic.
But none of the companies outthere were using a therapeutic
amount of magnesium.
In fact, what I found out wasthat the FDA doesn't regulate
skincare.
There's zero regulations.
So even what you put on thelabel doesn't exactly have to

(19:18):
match what's in the bottle, because there's nobody testing
it, there's nobody looking out, there's nobody putting rules
about these things.
So, people, what I was noticingis that, with the popularity of
magnesium, brands were taking aregular body moisturizer,
putting two or three drops ofmagnesium in it, selling to you
as a magnesium cream, and thenyou wonder why you're not
getting the benefits.
So I was like there's got to bea way, let's fix this.

(19:40):
It took me two years, workingwith six different chemists from
around the world, to create amagnesium cream that was
therapeutically based, that wasbased off of scientific research
, that had that golden 500milligrams per use in it, and
that's when Rooted In came tolife.
So we launched it about fiveyears ago and it's been just

(20:00):
overwhelmingly accepted.
Everybody loves it.
We've sold out 10 times.
We're about to sell out on oneof ours again, so it's been
really well received.
But, more importantly, it'sbeen changing lives.
We have people who aresuffering with pain in different
ways, that are taking painmedication on a daily basis,
that have been able to get offtheir meds.
We have people who havestruggled with insomnia their

(20:20):
entire life, who, from day oneusing our creams, are getting
eight hours of sleep.
So we're seeing these beautiful, beautiful stories behind our
product and our goal is just toreally continue that mission of
helping people with magnesium.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
Well, I'd love to hear more about your product
lines and who each of thedifferent products are intended
for or the kind of challengesthat they're intended to solve.
And how is it best to jump intothe product line?
Is it best to buy a bundle?
I've been eyeballing the bundle, so you give me your best

(20:58):
advice?

Speaker 2 (20:59):
Absolutely.
The bundle is definitely ourmost popular, so we created
three formulas.
We have three formulas for thethree biggest issues that we
deal with in the US.
We have rest, relief andtranquility.
So rest is fabulous for sleep.
All three of them have the sameamount of magnesium.
So no matter what formula youuse, you're going to get that
therapeutic 500 milligrams perteaspoon.

(21:20):
So all three of them sameamount of magnesium.
But the rest has chamomile andpassionflower and lavender and
clary sage and ylang-ylang andall these beautiful herbs and
oils that calm down the nervoussystem and prepare your brain
and body for sleep.
So you simply apply it right asyou get into bed.
I always like to do legs, feetand chest Hop into bed.
Five minutes later you aresound asleep and then you stay

(21:42):
that way all night long and youdon't wake up tired.
You're not groggy, you don'tfeel like you have medicine head
, like if you were to takemelatonin or something like that
.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
Ours is completely melatonin free, so you can use
it on your children.
You can use it while you'repregnant.
You can use it anytime you wantwith no fear of side effects Be
concerned with.
If you're taking some sort ofmedication.
Should you talk to your doctorabout it, or is it pretty fine?
I know from my own medicalhistory that my doctor is
actually recommending magnesiumfor me, I love that your
doctor's recommended magnesium.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
Whoever you went to, they are saints, because most
doctors aren't educated inmagnesium.
So the fact that they evenrecommended it what amazing
healthcare practitioner you havethat's awesome.
But yeah, our creams are.
I mean, of course, we alwayssay check with your doctor.
No matter what you're doing, whatever supplement, whatever
diet, any changes that you make, always check with your doctor.

(22:39):
Um, but, generally speaking, ifyou can swim in the ocean, you
can wear our creams.
So, no, no issues whatsoever.
Um, so, yeah, our rest creamamazing.
Our relief cream was created forpain.
So if you deal with aches, pains, soreness, cramping,
restless legs, headaches, um,pains, soreness, cramping,
restless legs, headaches, anykind of issues like that, I like
to call it our natural Tylenol.

(23:00):
So we keep it in our medicinecabinet along with our other
herbal pain relievers.
But our relief cream has thatarnica, white willow, bark,
comfrey, ginger, all thesebeautiful herbs that really,
really attack inflammation inour joints and in our muscles.
And then our last formula is mypersonal favorite and that
one's Tranquility which iscreated as our daytime formula.
Great for energy, great forstress relief, for focus, just

(23:22):
one of those things that you canuse throughout your day,
especially if you're starting tofeel anxious, if you're feeling
irritable, overwhelmed, if youhave racing thoughts.
It can calm you down withoutmaking you sleepy.
So it's a really good daytimeformula.
It's my personal favorite.
That's the one that really, really impacted my anxiety and
really helped with those panicattacks I was dealing with.

Speaker 1 (23:39):
So I had been having some chronic inflammation and
sort of concerned about my heartand despite being a sponsored
adventure sports athlete, Isuddenly couldn't walk up four
or five stairs in my own homewalk up four or five stairs in

(24:00):
my own home and I went toseveral cardiologists and it
took four years now before Ifinally got a result.
There's nothing wrong with myheart.
I can run a mile, but I washaving arrhythmias, a very
slight, irregular heartbeat.
So I wore a heart monitor andtwo cardiologists both suggested
you don't need a beta blocker, and I know most of the times
when you have an arrhythmia thefirst thing the doctor will say

(24:22):
is we need to get you on a betablocker right away.
So I don't like to takeprescription medicine unless
it's in a life-saving situation.
So I did not want a betablocker, but that wasn't the
recommendation.
Two cardiologists said justmagnesium is the trick and I've
been on it and the arrhythmiashave stopped.

(24:43):
So my question for you is can Itake the magnesium supplement
orally and the cream at the sametime or within the same day?

Speaker 2 (24:57):
Absolutely.
I often recommend doing both.
I'm a big believer that weshould be working from the
inside out and the outside inany time we get.
The beautiful thing about usingmagnesium as a pill or a powder
is our body does have our Ilike to call it our built-in
safety mechanism.
So if you take too much of apill or a powder, it's going to
get processed through yourkidneys, through your digestive

(25:17):
tract, and the excess magnesiumis going to get basically kicked
out of your body pretty quickly.
If you've ever taken too muchmagnesium all at once, then you
probably know what I'm talkingabout, because it can send you
right to the restroom.
But that's your body working toprotect itself from overdose.
It's saying hey, too much, let's get rid of it.
Our skin, on the other hand ourskin will regulate how much
magnesium we take in topically.

(25:38):
So our skin will prevent usfrom overdosing.
It'll allow all you need in andit won't take in anymore when
you don't need any more.
And I always love to give thatexample of being at the beach.
We swim all day in the ocean.
Nobody in the history of timehas ever said get out of the
ocean, you're getting too muchmagnesium, right, so we can swim
.
Time has ever said get out ofthe ocean, you're getting too
much magnesium, right?

(25:58):
So we can swim, we can absorbwhat our body needs and then we
can continue to go on with ourlife without even having to
overdose topically as well.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
That's such great news to hear.
After this brief break, we'llbe back with Natalie Jamarada
and her final thoughts on thebenefits of magnesium.
World events are constantlyteaching everyone some very
