Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up following the Houston Astros losing 11-2 against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Framber Valdez was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with elbow soreness and top pitching prospect Spencer Arrighetti was called up to make his major league debut. "The starting pitching has faltered" due to injuries, and the Astros are having to "extend guys further than you want," Bogusevic said. "It's a really difficult thing to cover that," and the Astros have "to hope to get healthy quickly." Bogusevic also comments on the Astros struggling to advance runners, and first baseman Jose Abreu's slow start to the season, saying the Astros are "going to keep running him out there" because "it did get better as the season went on last year."

(00:00):
Strolls come up short. They fallto four and nine on the season.
To help us pass through how wegot here and what we can do to
get out of this predicament. Aman that was a twenty fourth overall pick
by the Astros in two thousand andfive. You see his face looking good,
gray jacket, nice fresh gray nikeson space sitting Home Network. Astros
analysts Brian Boga Sevi Boga, goodmorning, Good morning. I'm glad you

(00:24):
noticed the shoes stand. Yes,sweet, So I got to ask him
about that tomorrow. Okay, Iwanted to start at least break the dice
because, Boga, I'm about togo in and I don't have a direct
pipeline to Jim Crane, Dana Brownor a Spoder. So you get it,
Bogie, this team has several leaksin the boat where you want to

(00:46):
start. Okay, Plan A right, and a Plan A has not worked
this year. Every team is designedto play a certain style of baseball,
right. Good teams can win gamesa lot of ways, but everybody has
something that you know, all thingsbeing equal, how would you map out

(01:06):
a victory? And for the Astros, it's win a six a sixth inning
game. With your starting pitching andyour offense handed over to the big guys
in the back of the bullpen andthey lock it down and it's a wrap
and we go home with a victory. That's worked one time this year,
Right, it was Friday night inArlington, Renelle pitch Grade. Jordan hits

(01:26):
a homer Presley hater boom done. But one out of thirteens not enough.
And you know when when you findyourself in a situation and it's been various
reasons why that hasn't worked, youjust kind of start swimming and looking for
ways to win a game. Howare we going to win a game today?
And unfortunately, with that results inis oftentimes finding different ways to lose

(01:49):
games. This team has a currentresume of not advancing runners on the base
pass. What is the cause forthat. It's a couple of things.
So scoring runners can be seen kindof two ways, right, it's hitting

(02:10):
with runners and scoring position, gettingbase hits with with men on either second
or third, And for that youkind of just you've just got to give
a time, right, You've gotto play the averages because it's batting average
with runners and scoring positions. Soyou've got to give it enough time to
level out. But runners on thirdbase with less than two outs, that

(02:30):
is more of an execution thing. That's pitch selection, understanding situation, slowing,
slowing it down and knowing what doI need to look for here to
have a productive at that maybe evenmake a productive out and get the run
in. That's the first place thatthey need to get better is if you're

(02:51):
up to bat with a run aroundthird and less than two outs, that
run has to be a given, and it has been anything but so far.
Talking with Space City Home Networks astrosanalysts, our brother Brian bogus sevic
Man put on the astro's uniform playingthe handful of lead handfully excuse me and
MLB knows what he's talking about.Appreciate him dropping by here. Sports Talk

(03:15):
seven ninety. Next up is nameof the show Fleet and Gordy Bogie.
That was a very good answer byyou. I appreciate their insight on the
hitting and advancing runners. Brian AbrayYou oh and one Aaron Getty Owen,
one Hunter Brown oh and one JPFranz oh and one heter o and two
Presley Oh and one Taylor Scott ohand one Square oh and one. I

(03:38):
won't even get into Henley talk tome about this rotation and relief. So
from a relief standpoint, it's kindof gotten turned upside down a little bit.
In the beginning of the season,it was some bad outings and some
poor pitch execution and they just gotbeat. What's happened now is the starting

(04:03):
pitching has faltered, which has causedthe bullpen to have to eat up so
many innings. Hold on, boI know, I normally don't interrupt you,
Bog, say that what you justsaid. If the starting pitching has
done what, Oh, it's it'sI mean, they've gotten nine innings out
of starting pitchers the last three starts. Oh, so the bullpen pitching does
have some room for improvement. Gotit? Okay, go ahead, Bogue.

(04:25):
I'm sorry because if you said, people around here, since I'm a
football guy, Bogue, I neverknow what I'm talking about when it comes
to anything other than football. Somaybe when a baseball guy says, what
is obvious if you watch the damngames that starting pitching is an issue.
Go ahead, I appreciate it,Bogey, Thank you for your patience.
Sure, so the bullpen gets turnedupside down in those situations and you end

(04:46):
up covering too many innings pitching guysstrictly on availability and not on situation or
matchup, and you know, youend up throwing Josh Hater in nonsafe situations.
You end up having to extend guysfurther than you want. So the
bullpen needs to get entrack. Twentytwenty two bullpen was awesome. Big part
of that was the starting pitching wentso deep into games that the bullten was

(05:09):
always pitching on schedule. So thatgoes into the starting pitching. What has
happened. They've lost three of theirtop four guys who are going to be
in the rotation two weeks into theseason. It's a really difficult thing to
cover that. I mean, they'vegot five starting pitchers on the injured list,
so you're looking at ten deep inthe organization to cover your starting rotation

(05:30):
right now. Plus Henley that makeseleven. You know, you're probably thinking
that we've got to go eight ornine deep to cover a starting rotation for
the entirety of a season. Tohave to do it all this soon,
I don't know what you can sayother than you've got to hope to get
healthy quickly. You know, JV'sgot to have a good second rehab start

(05:56):
and be ready to go. Hopefullycomes out of that feeling good. This
thing with Fromber it has to gettaking care of quickly because with the way
it is now, you just don'tknow that that's not going to be sustained.
It's not going to be sustainable towin a lot of games with with
justified that you've got going now.A few moments here with Brian Boges,
said, former Astro. He ison Spacey and Home Network. You see
him doing a great job there,uh in his uh analytical eye of these

(06:19):
astros in this twenty four season.Did the Astros do enough to protect themselves
this winter? I'm reading a tonof articles from baseball people telling me it
was interesting that they put money inHater and not covering up for Stanik Montero
and uh Nearest no longer being serious, Stantic Nearest and Meton no longer being

(06:43):
here. Yeah, I mean,it's it's the question it's asked all the
time, is it is it depthsor is it quality? And the askers
went for quality. They tried tothey tried to add to a to an
area of strength versus a dress andarea of weakness. So you know,
you lose one hundred and eighty inningsfrom those guys and you replace it with

(07:06):
sixty five from hater. That leavesa lot of flack to be picked up.
You know, there are capable armsfrom the guys who are filling those
middle innings now, but when youalso have to cover innings that aren't being
eaten by the starting rotation at thispoint in time, it makes it that
much more difficult. It's hard tosay, you know, looking at it

(07:28):
in hindsight, you can say, well, now that they're injured, we
should have had all all of theseextra starting pitchers, and Snell was out
there, Montgomery was out there. But if you were to assign one of
those guys going into day one ofthe season, what rotation spot does they
take? That would have just bumpedRonell Blanco out of the starting rotation.
We've been the best picture in baseballtwo times two. So revisionist history is
kind of easy. But depth isso important that you know, if you

(07:53):
go on the high end, depthcan get exposed pretty quickly in a six
month seasons. When we'll get youout here, the people are clamoring for
something on first base. This Joseof bra You situation has gotten to a
critical level. What do you thinkthe organization will do with a bread you
at first base? I think they'regoing to keep running him out there.

(08:16):
I mean, he makes a lotof money, He build a lot of
money into the future, and there'sstill too much on that to just eat
it and walk away. And Ijust can't foresee the scenario in which he
doesn't keep getting at least somewhat regularat backs and try to I mean,
I don't want to say figure itout. I just to have more productive

(08:39):
at bats. It did get betteras the season went on last year,
but it looks now just like itdid at the beginning of the season last
year, which which is not agood thing because then you start to think,
okay, is that just kind ofwhat it is at this point.
