KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up as the Houston Texans begin organized offseason workouts. "Most of these guys work out year-round," Wilson said. The NFL Draft begins with the first round on Thursday, April 25, and "most people think [the Texans] will come away with at least one defensive back." The Texans hosted South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler on visit last week, and Wilson says he isn't throwing out the Texans drafting a quarterback because "aspiring quarterbacks like that can be valuable." The Texans have signed a lot of new players in free agency, especially wide receiver Stefon Diggs who will "add competition to the room." This will be a "competitive training camp," and "when they do cuts, it's going to be familiar names," Wilson said.

(00:00):
Let's talk Texans as The guys areback over at NRG today, many of
them. AnyWho, as the Texansare one of about twenty two teams that
begin voluntary off season program today, and anytime we talk Texans, we must
get the great Aaron Wilson on ourTexans inside of here Sports Talk seven ninety.
Mister Wilson, good morning. Ihope you have enjoyed a little bit
of a break. Now it's timeto run some iron and get some win

(00:22):
springs. Let's get in shape forthis twenty fourth season. Absolutely, yeah,
rested up, ready to go.Today is the first day phase one
of the voluntary emphasis on the wordvoluntary off season conditioning program. All right,
some waitlisting and camaraderie and not awhole lot of football activity. But

(00:43):
yeah, the guys, most ofthem, get back in the building and
we'll have a press conference at noonwith Jamiko, Ryan CD, Straddigill Anderson
Junior, a scheduler. I sawyou do a sit down, and I'm
not sure the total length of thesit down, but I saw you with
veteran Jimmy Will the guy that washurt a lot last season. Obviously,
you know he's a guy at theDemico's on hard What did Jimmy Ward have

(01:06):
to say about getting ready for thetwenty four season? All right, Yeah,
Jimmy Warren said he thinks they aregoing to be a team that's going
to go get the ball on defense, and he likes the offseason acquisitions they
made. He says they've been cookingNick Caserio and Miko Ryans in their collaboration
to bolst for the roster. Hewas very excited about Stefan diggs addition,

(01:30):
mostly for him as a football player. He called him a great talent.
But he also did do a littlebusiness with Stefan one hundred thousand dollars for
the number one jersey and worked outwell for Jimmy because he went back to
number twenty, which he wore quitewell for the San Francisco forty nine ers.
So a good exchange of those twogentlemen did some business that is not

(01:52):
uncommon in the NFL and professional sportswhen someone has an affinity for a number.
This is Stefan's University of Maryland number, and Gon'll be back in his
old college number as he gets thisfresh start with the Texans, and as
you've seen on social media has alreadybeen working out throwing with C. G.

(02:12):
Stroud and hanging down on John Metchyou the third out in California.
So yeah, he's been hard atwork with his off season program already that
he's doing on his own. Somost of these guys work out year round
and don't take a lot of timeoff, and he is no different.
He's always in great shape. Era little bit over a week from the
draft. We'll hear from Nick Cassarioa little bit later in this week.
But I know you've been reporting ona lot of different guys they've brought in

(02:35):
for visits, and he owns standoutsto you. I know Andrew Phillips,
a guy I talked with the SeniorBowl defensive back from Kentucky. They brought
in Ray Davis, the running backfrom Kentucky. I know they've been high
on any guys caught your eye thatthey've brought in for visits. Yeah,
those two from the Kentucky Wildcats areinteresting. There's it Sola's Bullard, the

(02:58):
defensive back from Georgia, another goodfootball player. I've seen a tiny bit
of a pattern where I've seen alot of corners and safeties. None of
us have seen a couple of runningbacks, including Gurendo from Louisville, So
you know, trying to figure outexactly who they'll pick from the visits is
tough. I mean, reported thismorning Jordan Morgan. He was going to

(03:21):
visit but then they wound up doinga private workout instead for him. But
he's probably going to be off theboard by the time there in the second
round. They could always trade up. He's a good football player. But
I think defense is the concentration. That was something that there are a few
things that didn't quite go their wayin free agency and looked like some spots

(03:43):
that could fill, so I couldsee them adding two corners safety. We've
seen a little bit of, youknow, looking at wide receivers, including
locally. They brought in Luke McCaffreyfor a not a local day but a
special like local dissins it including They'velooked at other local players including Jlex Hunt
from Houston. Christian interesting pass Russiawas also the Senior Bowl and did well

(04:09):
at the NFL scout of Combine. So it's really I would say, pretty
wide cross pattern and that's what yougenerally see from the Texans when it comes
to pre draft activity. But we'vealso seen them draft players that have visited
like Derrick Signey junior in the past, so and Will Anderson and c.
J. Stroud. So I thinksometimes with some of the top selections,

(04:29):
guys that are in the first coupleof rounds, it does mean something.
And you know, figuring out apattern would mean you'd have to have every
trip. And you know, Idon't know all of them. I just
hear some of them and support, you know, once I find three irrelevant.
But yeah, they've definitely looked alot of defensive backs. It looks
like that's something that they are atleast evaluating should they pick some in this

(04:53):
draft. Most people think they willat least come away with one defensive back
out of their picks. The voiceof Aaron will Wilson, Texans Insider here
on Sports Talk seven ninety where realTexans talk and listen. This is next
up. I'm staying Northfleet. Thatis Chris Gordon to my left and Rosson.
We did not get to it lastweek, but Gordy, you just
mentioned about guys from college coming infor their top thirty visits, if you

(05:16):
will, one that got some attentionthat I think is worth addressing Aaron.
I couldn't wait to run this valuequarterback Spencer Rattler out of South Carolina,
formerly of Oklahoma. I remind folksthat I do believe this is the last
year under contract for case Keenum andI can't remember if this is the last

(05:39):
year of his rookie deal. Ibelieve it is for Davis Mills this backup
quarterback scenario. Are they still comfortablewhere they are or is that something that
you know, one of those midround picks. You can see them taking
a shot at quarterback. I cansee them doing it. I think that
in the case of both case Kumand Data Snow, it is a contract

(06:00):
here. I don't think that's thereason why necessarily you feel impetus to meet
with a Spencer Rattler. He's agood quarterback. He's checked some boxes here
in the pre draft process, andyou know they found him intriguing enough to
bring in along with a few otherplayers that day. I think when you
look at Spencer started off very wellat Oklahoma and he got replaced by Caleb

(06:21):
Williams, and you know that isa great quarterback to be replaced spot.
But had some success at South Carolinabehind a bad offensive line. To me,
showed some toughness. He would stepin, he would take the hits,
he would deliver the throw. Hecan put the ball where it needs
to go. He was the SeniorBowl MVT. They do like the seenor

(06:43):
Bowl a lot. That's an importantpart of the draft process that Texans do.
Looked a lot of Senior Bowl guys, so not a big shock that
they would at least evaluate. RonWolfson was a great GM for the Packers.
He needs to talk about you shouldtry to draft a quarterback every year.
Never know. Even acquiring quarterbacks likethat, they can be valuable,

(07:04):
They can be valuable in trades andyou just never know. Maybe he's the
next backup quarterback for them thinking downthe road, but they can only keep
so many quarterbacks. They also haveTimball on the roster right now, they're
at four. I don't know ifthey'll pick one. I think it's something
that they kick around, the ideayou see what happens. But yeah,

(07:25):
I'm not pretty to what they'll door how they view that specific As far
as I don't think that it's asituation of we're drafting a guy, we're
moving on from these guys. Myexpectation is a training camp you'll see at
least those three quarterbacks, the topthree guys. Of course, what's fascinating
Aaron is I've seen some mock draftsas the Texans going wide receiver, and

(07:46):
as excited as we are about thewide receiving core right now, with the
additions to Fawn Diggs, it's crazyto think only John Metchi, Tank Dell,
and Xavier Hutchinson are on this rosterinto twenty twenty five, Robert Woods
will be a free agent. NoahBrown on Nico Collins, who we all
expect to get an extension, butreworking this deal with Stefan Diggs where you
know basically he can hit free agencyagain next year. It just it's not

(08:09):
the craziest idea to think that theTexans that they really like a wide receiver
in this draft, why not takethem, because you do have a lot
of decisions to make after this season. I think it's very logical and to
look at capitalizing One of the tome is a really deep tunel receiver class
and wherever you pick one, andit could be later, I still think

(08:31):
that it would add competition to theroom and you never know, they might
be a guy that you like somuch that he beats out one of the
guys you'd drafted or the Chiefs signedfor a free agent contract before. And
I think you've got to be openminded about it, and you know to
just say, hey, we're allsad if you always keep continually doing that.
Teams like that, they don't stayon top. And then the last

(08:52):
thing that I would describe the Texansas is complacent. They're not. So
I'm really excited to what training campwill be like because the corenty competitive for
not just the pecking order behind thetop three receivers, but jobs who's gonna
make the team is they're gonna cutthere when they do cuts, there's gonna

(09:13):
be some familiar names. That's gonnahappen because the rosters become more talented than
the decisions become tougher. All Right, that's the voice of the great Aaron
Wilson, our Texans insider. Hereat Sports Talk seven ninety we will hear
from Dimico CJ. And Will AndersonJr. At noon. We will be
monitoring and continue to monitor Aaron WilsonUnderscore NFL on the X platform, formerly

(09:35):
known as Twitter, ay Dels,we appreciate your time this morning. Man.
Thanks guys, great talking to me. Always take care My brother Aaron Wilson
