Chris Gordy.

Let's see what's next next next?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
What's up? Everybody? Welcome into Next Up.
Speaker 6 (00:25):
Sports Talk seven to ninety Chris Gordy here with you
stand norfold.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
It will be uh in along the way.
Speaker 6 (00:32):
We got plenty to dissect, plenty of discuss as we
put to bed last week's NFL sees it or NFL
week as would continue on the season, close the book
on week seven, turn to week eights as your use.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Houston Texans continue.
Speaker 6 (00:46):
To sit in that two spot in the AFC, behind
the Kansas City Chiefs, but now tied in the standings
with the Baltimore Ravens, and man, did they look good
last night?
Speaker 7 (00:59):
They are gonna be a problem.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (01:01):
We'll get into plenty more along the way. We got
some guests that are gonna join us. By him this hour,
Aaron Wilson will stop by. We'll get his thoughts on
Elates on the injuries. Anybody gonna get healthy and get
back this week we'll talk about that. Jonathan Well is
gonna join us in hour number two, we'll get his
thoughts on the Texans loss. Rockets will make their season
(01:25):
debut tomorrow night here in at Toyota Center's two massive
extensions for their young core. Astros hire a new third
base coach as well. But I want to start here
with the Houston Texans. And by the way, you are
welcome to jump in seven ninety seven one two, five
seven nine. Uh. Still disappointed in the loss to Green
(01:47):
Bay and how that transpired.
Speaker 7 (01:50):
You had it right there for the taking. You couldn't
close the door.
Speaker 6 (01:54):
But last night, man watching the Baltimore Ravens, they Tampa
Bay Bucks jump out to a ten nothing leading in
the first quarter, and at a buddy text me, he goes, Man,
Bucks look really good, like this is a good team
with Baker Mayfield. And then Lamar Jackson did Lamar Jackson thinks,
and he turns it on, goes for five touchdowns, five
(02:15):
touchdown passes, not even runs, no interceptions. A quarterback rating
of one fifty eight for Lamar Jackson last night. Absolutely incredible.
Derrick Henry with one hundred and sixty nine rushing yards. Oh,
by the way, he is now going over one hundred
rushing yards in four of his last five games. The
(02:36):
one he didn't he had ninety two in and he
almost had two hundred in one of those. He had
one ninety nine in the win over Buffalo. They are
a monster right now. And of course the Kansas City
Chiefs did Kansas City Chiefs things and they won, you know,
a hostile environment in St. Fran and they got to
win on Sunday afternoon to purchase six. And oh so
(02:57):
here are your Houston Texans in the standing sitting at
five and two. Like we said, Kansas City with the
one seed in AFC. The Texans behind them at five
and two now tied in the standings, but the Baltimore
Ravens and the Buffalo Bills. Good news is you have
the tiebreaker over the Buffalo Bills and you're four to
zero in the conference, so you're ahead of the Ravens,
(03:19):
who took two losses. Remember they lost to the Chiefs
in Week one and then they had that inexplicable loss
to the Raiders. But Texans, like, if the season ended
right now, the Texans would be the two seed.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Now.
Speaker 6 (03:31):
The thing that sucks about that because they added the
extra wildcard games. Only the top seed gets the first
front by now, and so the Kansas City Chiefs would
sit at home, they would have home field advantage through
out the playoffs, and the Texans would host a wildcard
game that first weekend, Wildcard weekend. But again, we got
(03:51):
plenty of time before that happens. The point I'm trying
to get to in all this is, right now, the
Texans are not playing their best football, right. I mean,
they looked like they played their most complete game two
weekends ago against New England. But this past weekend we
knew it was gonna be a tough test going on
the road to Green Bay. The run game got going.
(04:11):
Remember we were bitching for weeks like, oh, the run
game can't get going. Joe Mixon being back these last
two weeks, he's been awesome, but obviously the passing game suffered.
And it's so funny. It's like those weeks where the
run game wasn't going. Cam Akers was running for like
twenty yards, fifty yards.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
C J.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Stroud was throwing for three forty five and three thirty one.
These past two weeks, when Joe Mixon goes over one
hundred yards rushing, the passing game took a step back
one against New England eighty six this week. Now again,
if they wanted to throw it more against New England,
they could have. They didn't need to, but the green
Bay won certainly CJ. Stroud throwing for only eighty six yards.
Speaker 7 (04:47):
It was a problem.
Speaker 6 (04:48):
The pass rush of green Bay was getting home then
getting after it. We're gonna talk this week about getting
ready for this Colts team, who, again Anthony Richardson has
done nothing special at all, But Colts have played much
better football and they're winning some games.
Speaker 7 (05:03):
So this division races is back on.
Speaker 6 (05:07):
But when I look at the backstretch of the schedule,
and really it's those last the two the two games
before the end of the season. Well, you got to
go to Kansas City on December twenty first, and then
turn around on a short week and come back Christmas
night or you know, Christmas Day night home against Baltimore
(05:29):
here in Houston. It's actually a third thirty game, so
it's late afternoon into the evening.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
But those two games are monumental.
Speaker 6 (05:38):
Whatich the Texans want to be doing is you want
to be playing your best football when you get to
those games. Basically, yes, the Chiefs are head. Are you
in the standings right now? Yes, the Ravens are tied
with you in the standings right now. But let's see
where you are when you get to that game, and
you've got some winnable games here. You're gonna see Jacksonville,
You're gonna see Tennessee. You're gonna see the Cowboys that
(06:01):
don't look like much of a challenge right now. You're
gonna get the Jets who are struggling. You get the
Colts this weekend, who you should beat. The toughest games
in that mix are Detroit, who you get at home
on Sunday night football. And we'll see what Miami looks
like with Tua back. I don't know if they're just
gonna bounce right back into looking awesome again on offense,
(06:25):
but we'll see on that one. But really, basically, you
got two months from yesterday. Two months from yesterday is
when you go up to Kansas City. Now, I can
already tell you it's gonna be cold as hell up
there in late December. Maybe snow, we'll see, and then
the home and then a short week home game against Baltimore.
(06:46):
Those two games, it's the Texans could just find a
way to win those two games. Home field advantage very
well still could be uh secured by the Texans. So
it was just that's my thought watching that game last night.
And yes, Baltimore looks awesome. The Chiefs look awesome. Although
that Pat Mahomes his numbers are not eye popping by
(07:08):
any means. It's that Chiefs defense that is getting it done.
That's what's crazy. Like the Chiefs have almost shifted. They
they've had good defenses under this run of Andy Reid
and the Pat Mahomes era. But god, it's like it's
like they are a defense first team. Now run the
ball and a little Pat Mahomes sprinkled in. Pretty crazy.
(07:28):
But yeah, I mean, look, eta two months. You got
two months to get this thing wreck up as many
wins as possible and get to those two games, and
let's see where you are in the standings. Let's see
if the Chiefs have taken a couple losses by them,
Let's see if the Ravens have taken a couple more
losses by them. AFC supremacy top seed could be on
(07:53):
the line by the time you get to those two games.
And again, I think it's gonna be your two toughest
games of the season. But what if you're playing your
best football by then. We expect Nico Collins will be
back by then. You hope you don't have any other
catastrophic injuries along the way. You hope, you know, let's
say maybe you're fully healthy by the time you get
to those games. That'd be awesome. The ESPN put up
(08:16):
their Power rankings this morning. No surprise, they the Kansas
City Chiefs won. They moved the Detroit Lions up to
two after beating the previously undefeated Vikings. They moved the
Bills up to three. Look, they thrashed the Titans. Who cares.
But that's a quality, big quality win that the Texans
(08:38):
have over the Bills. As the season goes along, I
think we'll look back and go, thank god they won
that game, and yeah, the Bill stronger than Mary Cooper. Now,
of course, surprising they put the Ravens at four. I
really thought, in my opinion, i'd put the Ravens. I'm
sure as hell put ahead of the Bills in the standings.
I might have them ahead of Detroit the way Lamar
(08:59):
Jacks and Derrek Henry are playing right now. They put
the Packers at five. Can't argue with that. They beat
the Texans. The vikings dropped down to six. And there's
the Houston Texans, who were fourth last week in their standings.
They dropped them down to seventh in the ESPN Power Rankings.
And they actually have a little blurb on you know,
(09:22):
every team's young riser, like who's a young rookie or
young player that is playing very well for that team?
Day list Kaylon Bullock. By the way, it's twenty one
years old. They said, he's a pleasant surprise in his
rookie season. Leads the team in interceptions, is tied for
second in past deflections. When opposing quarterbacks target Kaylon Bullock,
they have a passer rating.
Speaker 7 (09:42):
Of forty six point nine.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
Third rounders become a starter on this Texans defense and
has a ballhawk rate of fifty percent, which is by
far the highest compared to other d beasts. There have
been some rookie blunders when Bullock has been beat by
receivers downfield, but the early returns say the Texans are
very policed with him.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
Speaker 6 (10:00):
I mean, you got Petrie, you got Bullock, you got
Jimmy Ward. Hopefully they can get Kamario last ter back
sooner rather than later and get the secondary back in
tip top tiptop shape.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
We'll feel really good about where they are.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
But basically just saying you need to take care of
the trash the next couple weeks Colts, this weekend trash,
take care of them, get a win, get to six
and two, going up to New York on a short
week next Thursday night or Halloween night. Gotta find a
way to beat them. They are a mess right now.
The Jets, even with adding Devonte Adams, they fired their coach.
(10:37):
Then you come back, you get basically a week and
a half to prep four Sunday night football at home
against the Lions. If the Texans are seven and two,
getting ready for the Lions on Sunday football here at NRG,
can you imagine what that atmosphere is going to be. Like,
I'm looking at ESPN dot com right now, they're listening
tickets as low as one hundred and forty six dollars.
Speaker 7 (10:57):
That's just the getting the door price for that game
right now.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
And then you and then you get a week plus
to go prepare for Monday night football in Dallas. So again,
the message here weather, the storm for the Texans, take
care of business and we'll come back and hopefully by
the time you get to late December, you're right there
in the standings with the Chiefs and the Ravens and
a chance to beat both of them and possibly get
(11:22):
the top seed in Homefeld Advantage seven one three, seven
one three two five seven nineties is next up more
right after this on Sports Talk seven ninety with your.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Non next up pictures, Tremble with fear.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
You run out the rest mob Comfrey, run.
Speaker 7 (11:38):
Over with Northfleet and Gordion. Next up Bellies, Tremble with hunger.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Lunchtime is so close until then show down on more,
Next Up.
Speaker 8 (11:56):
One where we have a lot of things that clean
up when it comes to you our protection and it's
everyone involved, right a line, tight hand's backs is everybody
working together, being on the same page.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
And just getting it done.
Speaker 8 (12:10):
Like we've had multiple weeks where the same things have
hurt us multiple times, so we had to get it fixed,
starting with the coaches and out down to the players
of finishing and executing it.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
I keep them rogged up, staging them.
Speaker 6 (12:23):
O'ryans yesterday talking about the offensive line, which really struggled
against that green Bay pass rush as Stan Orfley jumps
in with us here.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Next up, you're welcome to as well.
Speaker 6 (12:37):
Seven one three, two, one two five seven nine is
look at the snap count from the game on Sunday
as Texans fell to the Packers. You know the offensive line,
all five O linemen played the snouts Kenyan Green, Lambry Tunsel, Shack,
Mason Tityus, Howard, Jue Crooks. They didn't try anything else.
They didn't say, hey, maybe that guy getting his asked,
(13:00):
let's maybe mix somebody else in. I bring this up
because stay, I just saw this piece up yesterday. It
says Jared Patterson, who did not play this week. He
allowed eight eight pressures and zero sacks in the seven
games he played last year. According to pff m H.
This guy Jacob on Twitter said, well, I don't think
(13:22):
he's amazing or anything. He is significantly better than Kenyan Green,
who was seven games in this year and has allowed
eighteen pressures and three sacks. I remind you Jared Patterson's
career at Notre Dame zero sacks allowed, logged almost seventeen
hundred pass block snaps in college. Now, I know he's
(13:42):
kind of the backup center, but he did play left
guard in college. I know we're into the thick of
the season, but I just like square peg, round hole,
we keep going. You know, is Nick Casseio going No.
We took Kenyan Green in the first round and he's
our left guard and that's that. How long do we
go with guy out there struggling before we go? Maybe
(14:05):
let's maybe let's mix in somebody else, like again, maybe
you give maybe you give Patterson a driver or two,
you know, in a game like I just stick it.
The fact all five those Olima got one snaps and
c J. Strau was getting his ass beat this week
just makes me wonder, like with sticking with the same
five guys the whole game, the right.
Speaker 9 (14:25):
Move, It's an interesting thought. I have some similar sentiments.
Good morning to all of you. Appreciate your patience, Thank
you g Man for opening up things. Connor whatever. So
to address your question directly, UH, when I heard Demiko
say that yesterday during his presser, my initial reaction is
(14:45):
all due respect, coach, and I mean that, what are
you really going to do? You had every reason to
bench lamb me Tonzu during penalty game, and you didn't
do it. We knew you weren't gonna do it. Okay,
you love Drew Scruggs, right like Casario traded up to
grab Juice in the second round last year. He's been
(15:08):
your center since he's been here. You're not benching him
while he's healthy. Okay, So he's in there, Shaq Mason,
that right guard, you know he's a mainstay. So what
are the two areas that you could see some flexibility?
The right tackle? Who you drafted a guy, Blakefish out
(15:29):
of Notre Dame in the second round this year, but
Titus has been the incumbent. You just said it. Gms
don't want to be wrong. They're gonna give a healthy
Kenyon Green every opportunity to boom or bust. The only
thing that I think they might consider. And I'm curious
what you think about this, g man, is it time
(15:50):
to move Titus high with back to left guard and
put Blake Fisher in at right tackle Because Titus at
left guard last year. We know how he feels about it.
He doesn't really love it. Fell on the sword for
the team. But I watched this team win a lot
of games with Titus. How that left guard?
Speaker 6 (16:06):
Yeah, and here's the thing, with that, I think the
reason he wanted to stay at tackle and he's been
had you know, set fast and I'm a tackle, is
that he wants to be paid like a tackle.
Speaker 7 (16:15):
Well, you got your money, so now we're payya.
Speaker 6 (16:18):
You're gonna play wherever the help we put you like
you got your money. That's just not if you're better
served for the team. And again, it's all for the team, right,
he did it last year.
Speaker 7 (16:26):
The team.
Speaker 9 (16:27):
Everything in for the team. Like one of the misnomers
that we have in team sports at the professional level
is that guys are doing stuff for the team.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
This isn't high school. It's no different than in your corporation.
Speaker 9 (16:38):
In the business I work in, when bonus time and
things on the table, people got families defeed like you're
gonna do what's in the best interest view.
Speaker 7 (16:46):
But he got paid.
Speaker 9 (16:47):
But what I'm saying, look at the contract. They can
move on from Titus after this season. Tightest mind is
I'm auditioning for the next team, So I gotta go
out here and be solid at right tackle, which I
think was part of the inspiration of right tackle. Only
that's my observation. Now, could they go with Ken Drick Green?
Instead of Ken Young Green at left guard. To your point,
(17:09):
maybe it's worth a trying. I just I'm I'm for
this point mixing. So let's try something else. And here's
the other tough part, because I saw somebody tweet this.
They said, Jared Patterson, they actually think could play better
at center in pass protection.
Speaker 6 (17:27):
But Juice is a better run blocker. So now you're
damned if you do, damned if you don't. The run
game's gotten going here the last two weeks, Joe Mixing,
but the pass protection is broken down, you know, So
it's like, what do you favor?
Speaker 7 (17:37):
Now do you bring in? You can't just bring in.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
This guy on on passing downs and this guy and
you know, so it's.
Speaker 9 (17:44):
They're gonna go with Juice at center in my mind
because you spent the second pick on him and moved
up to do so. In my mind, I think they think,
come hi, la high water. Other than his arms falling off,
Juice is gonna snap the ball to CJ.
Speaker 6 (17:57):
I just need the five best guys out there that
are you give me my best chance, all right? So
now I'm blocking in pass blocking.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Okay.
Speaker 9 (18:04):
I saw Blake Fisher granted as a rookie, granted he
had to come in the game. We think that was
Jacksonville when Larry Mitunsel had the ankle. I could be
mixing up games here. Nonetheless, Josh Heinz Allen or Jacksonville
destroyed Blake Fisher. Okay, then we saw I think I
saw that was the Buffalo game. He had some moments.
(18:24):
So for a guy that's thankfully not protecting CJ. Stroud's
blindside yet if he were to line up at the
right tackle, we cool, we're putting the rookie out there
to protect CJ, knowing that CJ has already been hit,
and I want to get to that on the other
side of Aaron Wilson, who's coming up in the next
segment as well, since we're here on the old line Gordon,
before we grabbed these couple calls, real quick.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
PFF grades are out.
Speaker 9 (18:48):
Shaq Mason's second highest rated player on offense behind Joe Mixon.
Titus Howard d afore mentioned third highest rated on offense,
bottom five on offense. Kenyon Green grated the worst of
anybody that played offense for the Texans with a minimum
amount of snaps. Those that qualify from an offensive line standpoint,
(19:09):
followed by Tank Dale, Dalton Shows, John matche the Third
and Damian Pierce.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Those were the five.
Speaker 9 (19:15):
Worst graded defenders or excuse me, offensive players. On Sunday,
we'll come back to PFL because we got to look
at some defensive stuff as well. Appreciate your patience, kJ
up in Cyprus to start the.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Morning, Lawnie fellas real quick be because I know you
said you got a Howison coming on next. Man, I
don't care what PFF said about the last game and
about Shaq Mason Beard Rady number one.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
That's like saying.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Which which one you want for then evening number two
or number three when it comes.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
To both of them, both for all of them was
trashed that day, seriously, man.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
And we got to stop with these I'm not saying
you guys, but we got to stop with these labels
about how good larm me terms of lives pre prior
to Sunday as a pass blocker, because even that's digressed
to the point to where that's not existing anymore.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
I heard and I sat back and listened to you guys.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Yesterday I didn't call I called in, but I got
off because I had a bunch of cars coming in.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Joe Mixon is a dog, no question. We can all
agree on that.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Joe Mixing the runs with purpose, and the yards that
Joe Mixon gets, Joe Mixing is getting those yards on
his own. Joe Mixing is getting met in the hole
at the first level. But he runs with such tenacity
that he's breaking tackles and getting into the secondary and
the other levels. It's not like that line is blocking
better with Joe Mixon. And now the same holes that
he's going through are the same holds and darl rating
(20:36):
the other guys were going through.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
It's just that Joe Mixon has a bunch enough.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
He's cking more out of it. Yeah, and and so
he makes it. He makes us do last thing. I'm
not gonna hop on our offensive lines. We beat that
dead horse yesterday and the present. The centiment is consistent
of mind. The thing that I want to say is this,
I look at Kansas City. They've lost Tyreek Hill, they
lost for sheet Rice. They gotta declining, uh tighten, tight
(21:02):
end Kelsey, and.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
They still move the ball. I see, I saw go
We saw Green Bay the other day. They don't have
a Stefan on Diggs or or Nico Coban, they move
the ball.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
I see teams consistently moves the ball with less skilled
players on their offensive on or and Kansas City lost
Potecco and they still move the ball. I see teams
with less skilled players put points on the ball. We
saw Tampa Bay lose Mike Williams in the second quarter
and they still put a thirty spot up. My grantityes
that some of that came in crunch time, but they
(21:34):
moved the ball once the.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Colleges kept turning it over.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
So I'm wondering, should should we be giving and maybe
you guys hoped on this yesterday, should we be giving
Bobby Slow because he's not slow wicked anymore, both slow?
Should we be giving him just as much virtue off
as we're giving the offensive line simply because you can't
tell me?
Speaker 1 (21:54):
I mean, if we can't, if we can't.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Generate a hunter George Spansion with Nico Collins off the
off the field, what do we have Stefon Diggs for.
It's a good point.
Speaker 9 (22:02):
kJ we are up against the brother I thank you
for your patience there, thank you for your contribution, thank
you for supporting the program as well. We will ask
Aaron Wilson some of the questions that echo the sentiments
of kJ. We'll continue talking Texans the majority of the
show today, Aaron Wilson on the other side, But no
doubt about it, there are their fair share of studs
over there at NRG. I believe Steph Diggs is one.
(22:24):
We mentioned Joe Mixon when he's right. I believe Larrmy
Tunseel is still a stud. And if you want to

Speaker 4 (23:50):
Chris Gordy are next cost on Sports Talk seven ninety Welcome.
Speaker 9 (23:56):
Back to Next Stuff on a Second Take Tuesday. I
have reviewed some of the video. Appreciate Gordon opening things up.
Good lord the Baltimore Ravens. Gordon and I were talking
about it off air. The Texas better get their head
out of their bleek because listen, if you got to
go to Baltimore go to Kansas City again in these playoffs.
(24:19):
As inconsistent as this group has been, I don't know
that I have confidence they go in.
Speaker 7 (24:25):
There and they would get it done.
Speaker 9 (24:28):
Demiko Ryans teams the two seasons we've now seen him, Gordon,
there is a stark difference in how this team plays
at home and how they play on the road. And
I'm somewhat broken record, but it's the truth. The good
teams the Kansas City Chiefs sold you last year, whether
it's the regular season or the playoffs. From a Kansas
(24:49):
City standpoint, the first time we saw them in the playoffs,
take that show on the road.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
You gotta be able to go on the road and win.
Speaker 9 (24:56):
And now, no, I'm not going to panic and say, oh,
the season is over. Detectans are terrible squad, you know,
start thinking about draft talk and all this stuff.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
We're not there.
Speaker 9 (25:08):
But and this is gonna remind you when I say this,
of some things we said about the Astros when we
were doing that, and you know, the one on one
sixty two, and I kept saying, you're gonna look back
at the end of this thing of these one sixty
two and you're gonna highlight about ten games. That is
the difference in hosting a division round or wildcard game
(25:28):
and going on the road. And I'd be damn if
that didn't happen because they didn't have to play in
a wildcard. Had they been better, Uh then Cleveland, excuse me,
but bringing back to football. So the for Sunday Gordon,
my point is it's a disappointing loss, not just because
they got beat convincingly on the field, not necessarily the scoreboard,
(25:50):
but because of the tiebreakers. Giving the Packers are gonna
play everybody else in the division. I believe it could
come back to haunt you. That's where some of my
disappointment is.
Speaker 6 (26:01):
Two months from yesterday you host the or you go
to Kansas City to play the Chiefs, and then you
have that short week where that Wednesday, Christmas Day, you
will host the Ravens. The question is can the Texans
be within two games of both of those Like, can
they be within the two games of the of the
Chiefs and the Ravens in the standings by the time
(26:22):
they get to those because if they win, if they
can find a way to win both of those games,
it could put them in the driver's seat four, and
we've seen I.
Speaker 9 (26:30):
Love where you are there, and it's something for us
to consider as we go through the next month or
so of the season, next six weeks, like are they
chasing Cansit or they chasing Baltimore, Cause like it looks
to me, I don't know that the Texans can chase
down Kansas City.
Speaker 7 (26:48):
They're gonna drop a game eventually.
Speaker 9 (26:50):
Of course they're not gonna go to defeatd But I'm
saying I'm willing to concede some I don't want to
say that word Casis.
Speaker 7 (26:55):
No, no, no.
Speaker 9 (26:56):
In my mind, I can justify, Okay, Can City's gonna
be the one and see right now the Texans After
all that, and we still got to unpack this game.
The Texans are still in the two spot. For me,
it's about hosting a divisional round game here. The Texans
play much better here for whatever reason. So we'll see.
(27:20):
If it's me, I'd rather take the ill to Kansas
City and beat Baltimore because I don't have to go
there anymore. We've now seen these Texans go to Baltimore.
Now we're gonna introduce Aaron here. We'll ask if he's
got some time to hang around for another segment. I
were Texans and NFL inside of here at seven ninety.
Aaron Wilson was there in Green Bay. I also heard
(27:40):
him at NRG yesterday when Demiko spoke, Aaron, good morning
to you.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Did you bring us you brung us some cheese?
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Back?
Speaker 5 (27:50):
I actually tried to order some cheese at a place
they call Titles found across the street from the Lambeo
Fields and they were out of cheese. Was Sunday night
and couldn't have that with my dinner. But yeah, no cheese.
I didn't.
Speaker 8 (28:05):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (28:05):
I didn't want to really pack like a sweaty cheese
in my suitcase and go to a store. So I
did that like several years ago, rookie move. He never
will do that.
Speaker 7 (28:14):
Yeah, don't want to do that.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
Don't don't recommend it.
Speaker 9 (28:17):
All right, So we're gonna get one question in here,
we'll break, and then hopefully you can stay with us
on the other side.
Speaker 5 (28:22):
Yeah, sorry for I was at a community event with
Hannah McNair and some subtle and.
Speaker 9 (28:29):
I'm sorry, sir, this is not Humble Break Tuesday. But
we're glad that all right, so check it. Uh, let's
start with the sound that we played, Demico says, listen,
the offensive line, they must be corrected. Everything is on
the table. To me, respectful to Domico, that sounds like
some coach speak. They're not benching laromy Tonzo. They're not
(28:50):
gonna bench tight as Howard Juice Grugs is gonna be
the center. They're not benching Shack Mason. So what reasonable
solutions are you hearing in the building when Demik says
that what the fans and we in.
Speaker 10 (29:03):
The media expect, right, what's reasonable to expect is a
sense of urgency and you know, putting people maybe on
notice that continue to play that way and we'll get
someone else on.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
But I don't think. I mean, I was talking with
someone pretty close to this, and the idea was, you
don't want to push the panic button because you're five
and two. You know, yes, it was a bad game.
There's no way to defend the way the offensive line performed.
That said, you know, they fixed the penalty issue. That
(29:41):
got better, and that was looking at one point like,
well they'll just you know commit you know, eight ten
penalties a game. So, I mean, it's all about coaching.
So it's all on Chris Strausser co Popovi's the offensive
line coach, the Tim Yanzer to do a job of
getting these guys to understand and also I think for
Boby Slow understanding what are your limitations? What is the
(30:02):
offensive line?
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Like?
Speaker 5 (30:04):
Are they bad at making the line?
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Colls?
Speaker 5 (30:06):
Should CJ. Stroud be changing the protections? What I'm just seeing?
And they talk about communication, They're not being very communicative
and definitive about it, but it's really obvious they have
problems when people walk guys up and show blitz or
don't show it. And you know, for Juice Scrugs, a
younger center, this is some of the things that go
(30:27):
with the growing pains of a young center and a
young guard next to him. You have some vets and
they make mistakes too. Those guys they've all had penalties
and things like that, and they've all had pass protection breakdowns.
Not every sack was on the offensive line. You know,
you saw the free blitzer on Xavier McKinney. Dalton Schultz
doesn't get a glove on him, Titus Tower tripped over
(30:48):
his own feed on the Shungary sack and then they
had problems. Where I'm more concerned is why can't you
stop with delayed fire blitz and some of these loops
are inside. This is a gap B gap stuff. Eric
Wilson is a backup that only went in because Kay
Walker was concussed and no relation to me. But I
like his name, Eric Wilson. But Eric was balling. I mean,
(31:12):
they got to block these guys, They got to do better.
But as far as like benching everybody, like you say
wholesale changes, I mean, Larry Tunstall is unbenteable. I mean,
and it's not even Larry's fault.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
Everyone.
Speaker 5 (31:23):
This is kind of go overshadowed. He had extremely high
blocking grade. He was the highest graded guy he had
over at eighty recording for Football Focused Analytics, and most
of the pressure came on Kenyan Green was the lowest
graded guy at a twenty nine point zero, and he
allowed a lot of the pressures. It was a very
rough game. I would say a step back for Kenya Green,
(31:44):
their former first round draft pick, and Juw Scruggs had
his struggles too. So a lot of it was left
guard and center. So these are young players that you've
drafted the first round and second round respectably, coached them up,
and they've got to be coachable all.
Speaker 9 (31:59):
Right, well, Paul's here. Let's break, gentlemen, let's come back.
Aaron Wilson, our Texans insider, was at lambeau Field. He'll
join us and stay with us on the other side.
This is Sports Talk seven ninety where real Texans talk
and listen.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
This is Next Up stuff with Stan Norfleet and Chris
Gordy during this next stage on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Second Tech Tuesday.
Speaker 9 (32:24):
Here on Next to Up Sports Talk seven ninety at
home in Houston, Sports Fleet, Gordy, there's Connor. We go
back to the guest line. Aaron Wilson joins us, our
Texans insider. He's going to give us more insight. Gordy.
I fired off a couple questions. We know Aaron was
up in lambeau and he heard Demko live and in
person yesterday.
Speaker 6 (32:42):
Which guy I saw him? And Chancellor on Sunday night
on KPRC. They were like the last two guys in
lambeau Field though on shut her down? Did he Aaron
just give me a quick just a quick error. Texas
place Sunday at noon against the Colts. Aziz Al Shair,
Robert Woods, Kamari, Jimmy Ward, Henry Toto, any hope for
any of these guys back this week.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
Yeah, they hope on Henry, but he is still in
the protocol. He's back in the building, which is usually
a sign that your symptoms are subsiding and if you're
feeling good enough to come to work and have some activity.
But we don't know yet if he'll practice Wednesday. I've
heard ozis as a potential two week injury, so not
sure if he'll be able to go. Kamara Lassiter with
(33:26):
Kamara Lassiter, so the timetable was longer than this. He
is feeling better, I would be a little surprised if
he was able to play this week. There's mild optimism.
And then Jimmy Ward, he's still recovering from the groin injury,
not looking great for this one. So yeah, they're gonna
be missing some guys again. And obviously devil Ewid played
(33:46):
a good football game, a very good football game and
relief of disease, and so did Jake Hansen with Toto,
so they might have to do that again. I think
it could be very similar in terms of personnel. Robert
Woods is dealing with plantar fasciitis and has been in
a walking boot, so unlikely to get back for this week.
Steven Simms Junior. He has back spasms. That's why he
(34:07):
couldn't go and why they had to have Desmond King
upper returns in addition to Tank Dell. So we'll see
if his back comes down. It's hard to predict on
back spasms when the muscles will calm down and he'll
be able to get out there and play again, but
not a long term injury. Probably on one week injury
for Steven Sims Junior and no real new injuries. They
(34:28):
were actually even though they got their butt kicked in
Green Bay, they emerged unscathed in terms of anything serious.
So you know, we'll see who practices on Wednesday. The
better gauge is Thursday, and who's practice is in all right?
Speaker 9 (34:43):
Talk with Aaron Wilson again, our Texans insider here at
seven ninety. I heard this pop up yesterday and it's
intriguing and I want to spend some time in the
eleven o'clock Houray the likelihood for the Texans to add
a real player, a put like a starter level talent,
primarily on defense. We doubt there's an old lineman that
(35:05):
somebody's gonna let go to go contribute to the to
the offensive front, but on defense, especially in that secondary.
I think if something were to happen to Lassiter and Stingley,
Lord forbid, so going to add somebody to the secondary,
primarily at corner.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Not what are you hearing?
Speaker 9 (35:23):
Is it possible that Casario gets on the phone here
or is this what we're going and we're rolling? God
bless the Angelo Ross.
Speaker 5 (35:31):
No, I wouldn't rule it out. I think that he'll listen,
he'll he'll check it out. I think he'll he'll be involved.
I don't know if he'll ultimately make a move because obvious,
you know, someone else has to be willing to be
a trading partner. But I think he'll check it out.
I don't know if he'll pull the trigger on anything.
One thing I haven't mentioned is and you know, I
(35:52):
know this is probably gonna thrill anyone, but Jeff O
Kuda is expected back as soon as the Detroit game,
so they will get some depth. And they spent some
money on Jeff with the former third overall pick of
the Lions. Maybe he's back by then, so yeah, there's
some hope that they will get that depth a third
forearmner because he was supposed to be in that shack
(36:13):
griffin role that he played last year behind Steven Nelson
and Derrick Singley Junior. So we'll see. But for now, yeah,
it's ross and so they get Kamari back. The good
news is tomorrow will be back. It wasn't the type
of scapula fracture that you need surgery for, so he's
getting some feeling back in his arm. It is making progress.
It's just a matter of when is it safe to
(36:35):
put him back on the field so that he doesn't
have a setback. I can also report Christian Harris will
not be back this week. He will not be returning
for practice.
Speaker 10 (36:44):
So the calf.
Speaker 5 (36:45):
But still it was a bad setback with the calf
injury and training camp came back too soon, reinjured it
and that set back all of the progress. And so
he's still got to get the calf right before they're
gonna fee comfortable putting him out there. They do expect
them back at some point this season.
Speaker 6 (37:01):
Did he tear it off the bone? What's going on?
Go ahead, go ahead, it's uh, there wasn't. Saving grace though.
Aaron nevill Hewitt's playing well, you know, he's a he's
a guy who's previously started in the lague.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
He's playing well.
Speaker 6 (37:13):
Kaitlin Bullock is playing extremely well as the rookie safety,
So it's you know, look, it's a lot of negative
after you lose the game, but there are some positives
to look at, particularly.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
With this defense. All right.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
Yeah, Neville Hut is playing around and he's got nine tackles,
get a forty five interception return. He's always, you know,
been thought of as more of a two down kind
of linebacker, but he made a play in coverage and
I thought he should good speed. He's pretty athletic. He's
just not the tallest guy in the world, but he's
a power packed guy that runs fairly well and when
(37:46):
he gets there, you know he's gonna hit you. He
led the NFL in special teams tackles last year, and
you've seen the souplex tackles. I guess they'll probably get
fined for this new one. They said he he said
he didn't hear the whistle, But I like a linebacker
the plays to the echo of the whistle, and that's
who WU is. And Kaylen Bullock ballhowking instinctive rookie safety
very athletic. Very fun to watch a guy that elevates
(38:09):
for these interceptions. You know, to pick off Jordan love Is,
you know, it's a good quarterback, picked off Anthony Richardson.
He's picked off three of these guys, and he leads
the NFL in rookie interceptions. So he's also a very
fast start to his career, just as Kamara last year
was before this injury. So they nailed both of these
DV picks Nick Catario did, and I think it's a
(38:29):
credit to their scouting because it wasn't like everyone was
talking about them like their household names. But they performed
as well as anyone in the first round or whatever round.
Speaker 9 (38:39):
Talking again with Aaron Wilson, our Texans Insider. You also
see him on KPRC two, as Gordy mentioned there as
he was up in Lambeau gracious enough to join us
here at seven ninety. I think about I can't get
it out of my head. The sequence, the throat oh
(39:00):
to tank Dale. It's really twofold. The throw to Tankdale
on whatever it was, third and twelve, third and fifteen,
that would have been short of a first down. And
Demko says they were trying to go for a touchdown.
CJ says he didn't. He was trying to get to Demko,
but he couldn't. They chose not to call a time
out where they going for three, where they going for six?
And then Tankdale having four targets four target excuse me,
(39:20):
granted a drop, but like Tankdale leaving a game with
zero catches is absurd. It's two questions in one. How
do you see that? What are you hearing from the
guys in the locker room?
Speaker 1 (39:31):
Right?
Speaker 5 (39:32):
That's poor communication and that's on the offensive coordinator. You've
got to talk to the quarterback. And you know CJ. Stroud,
based on the interview, didn't seem like there was a
whole lot of talking during that two minute warning. So
you know, you got to have those conversations. You gotta
be ready. You shouldn't have to talk a whole bunch,
but you know, you do have the headset. I mean,
you can communicate, then you can just you know, it
(39:52):
doesn't have to be a long conversation to say, hey,
this is what we're trying to do. It's very obvious
to me they were playing for the field goal and
you know that's what they wound up doing. I think
CJ was curious to think and accurate in what he said.
His explanation after the game, well, of course, asked Bobby Slowank,
but the game is over, you know by the time
we're talking to him on Thursday and you're onto the
(40:13):
next What I see about the way they're running the offense.
They can't pass if you don't have any time. So
that's one of the reasons why you have eighty six
yards fifty five net if you can't pass protect in
getting Tank more involved. You know, Tank, that would have
been tough catch, but you know that's what he gets
paid to do, and he can't catch that ball. He
dropped it, and that didn't like lead to a lack
(40:34):
of confidence. They did target him three more times. They
tried to get Stefan more involved, but only five catches
twenty three yards did not make an impact, you know,
after the pregame multercation with Dary Alexander and Keshawn Nixon.
So I look at it on I think they just
weren't doing anything well as a passing attack. There was
one good play, the twenty eight yard er to Dalton Schultz.
(40:55):
Maybe turn to him more. You know, they didn't stop
it before, so keep going with that. I think they
were very wary too of Xavier McKinney, who entered Sunday
with five interceptions. They didn't turn the ball over. They
were trying to be careful with the ball, and I
think they should have ran it even more. At some
point it was obvious to me they're not going to
protect and they're not throwing that well. I didn't think
(41:17):
CJ played one of his better games.
Speaker 9 (41:19):
All right, that's the voice of Aaron Wilson. We appreciate it, brother,
will continue to monitor your work at Aaron Wilson underscore NFL.
As we flushed the Green Bay Package game, we look
forward and get ready for a game that will determine
the top of the AFC South Sunday at noon over
at G and Wilson. We appreciate her, brother, enjoy your
(41:39):
day off. Let's do it again starting tomorrow. So we'll
deal with tomorrow tomorrow, Ted night, however, got it my
favorite time of year, college football, hot and heavy, the
NFL doing what it does, playoff. Baseball World Series is
upon us, and we get the NBA, which tips off tonight.
Speaker 4 (41:59):
Now, next stup, it's the next man off, Next stop.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
The next step, Take the next step, next up, next.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
Stop, next, next stop? This he wants to be next.
Speaker 4 (42:12):
This is next up with tad Norfleet ten Chris Gordy.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
Let's see what's next next.
Speaker 9 (42:19):
Thanks, let's kick off the second half like only we
can here on Sports Talk seven ninety. We're here off
the west Loop South. That's the Galleria area. To be precise.
If you're new to the station, new to the show
or returning, welcome and appreciate all of you that trust
us with your time. By us, I mean me stand
sportsman on social To my left, my radio partner, he
(42:39):
is at Chris Gordon Diggers at Connor d McGovern. He's
at the controls there, making sure that we stay within
the navigational beaconds here on this program for another fifty
five minutes as we talk a lot of NFL and
mostly Texans. As it is second take Tuesday, Gone back,
looked at the film. Thank you to Aaron Wilson who
joined us at the end of the ten o'clock hour.
(43:01):
You can catch the entire first hour at Sports seven
nine at dot com and as always, the free iHeartRadio app.
We continue conversation about week seven in the NFL two
Monday Night games wrapped up last night, but at the
forefront of our minds as we welcome in a former
running back for the team over there, Off Kirby Jonathan Wells.
We call him j Dubb or J Welles around here.
(43:23):
Brother played collegiately running the rock in Columbus, Ohio. He
also again did some dirty work there tote that thing
for the Houston Texas j Wells. Good morning to you,
sir Hope all is well?
Speaker 1 (43:35):
Good morning. How y'all doing today? Fellas I'm doing all right?
Speaker 9 (43:38):
Man, got go to here with me, and I guess
the easiest thing is I'm watching this workout regiment from
Derrick Henry. Good God, brothers in shape, look good last
night running the ball. It makes me think about Joe Mixon.
Joe Mixon does it again. This is another one hundred
yard performance from him. Two tugs getting in the big
rectangle a couple of times. Joe Mixon has been everything
(44:00):
I thought he would be from a running backs perspective.
How is Joe Mixon doing it? But especially behind this
offensive line, which I'm gonna ask you about as well.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
I mean, he's just a down south, powerful, bruising runner man,
and I think he's had most of his successful he's
just getting straight north and south. I know they like
to do some things with him on the outside on
in the scheme, but I like him when he's running
that power, just straight downhill and that's when he really
broke up most of his long runs. Yesterday against the Packers,
well Sunday against the Packers.
Speaker 1 (44:33):
And yeah, he's been he's been.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Legit, man, He's everything that we need him to be
in the backfield. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get anything
done the game, and I was very disappointed with that.
Speaker 6 (44:43):
Yeah, what is it? Jay Wall's like, why is it?
The first few weeks of passing games awesome, but the
run game suffers. While Mixing was out, we get Mixing back.
He's got two hundred yard rushing games, but the passing
game suffer. What's what's going on here?
Speaker 2 (44:59):
I don't know, man, It's.
Speaker 1 (45:00):
Like every week we just don't know what as the
line is going to show up. I was completely baffled.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
We could not block him from the first player of
the game, and I said early in the game, I'm like,
we're not gonna be able to block them the day
and we weren't. They were creating way too much havoc.
And that's the most frustrated I've ever seen CJ. Strauss
since I've been watching him since his freshman year at
Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Throwing his hammet on the sideline.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
You know, he was very frustrated, obviously, and as he
should have been. You know that those guys are getting
paid a lot of money up front, and we definitely
got to do a better job of keeping guys off
the top of him.
Speaker 9 (45:34):
This guy is calling the plays for Houston offensively. J Wales,
is it time for us to take a real hard look,
like has the honeymoon worn off for Bobby Slok? I
like Bob, I like Bob, but specifically to the plan,
especially laid in that ball game on Sunday. Things you
(45:56):
just mentioned the protection we haven't even gotten to take.
They all haven't no catches. Only one receiver, Steph Diggs
had more than one catch on Sunday. Protection issues, ball distribution,
game management. From an offensive standpoint, do we need to
be asking Bobby Slowan what the hell's going on here?
Speaker 5 (46:17):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (46:17):
We need to be getting Nico Collins back in. That's
what we need to be doing. And they won't be
having these problems like losing Nico. We yeah, we telling
you guys, man, this NFL is such a week to
week situation.
Speaker 10 (46:30):
Man.
Speaker 2 (46:31):
Last week we go out and put up forty one
points with our Nico. But in this game against Green Bay,
we clearly saw that we were missing our number one receiver,
Nico Collins. We couldn't do anything, do anything, short couldn't
do anything. And foremost, with all the line man CJ
literally had no time.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
He was not.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
Comfortable one time back during the pocket for the most
part of that game.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
And uh that that's where it starts. That man, it
starts up fuming.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
I'm not there, Gordon.
Speaker 9 (46:58):
I'm gonna make sure that my point is clear and
Jay Wills is gonna be mad at me, and that's fine.
Speaker 2 (47:02):
It won't be the first time.
Speaker 9 (47:04):
I don't believe the Texans win the game on Sunday
if Nico Collins plays Stan Why do you say that?
Because they were minus three in the turnover battle and
Join Love on the final drive winning did what he
had to do. They had opportunities without Nico to win
the game. I don't think the way the way they
were screaming and the way they were having them simulated
(47:26):
blitz pressures without really having to see in five and
six people like I just think from an upfront standpoint,
to simplify it, I don't think the offensive line was
going to allow Nico to be a difference maker on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
That's just my opinion. We'll never know. We just gotta
be fo You just got to run past people. What's
shown that he's been able to do that. So the
other receivers, for whatever reason, they have not shown that
they've been able those past people and make any loan
balls this year. So we're definitely missing him. I think
(48:00):
we would have scored more points with him out there.
I'm definitely going to say that. But once again, we
both agree, and you've been talking about this for a
couple of weeks, both of you, guys. The offensive line
has just been up and down, and we got to
be able to get to a consistent place of where
they can play each week and protect CJ and be
able to run the football at the same time, and
then we can do that, we'll be good. But I mean, hey,
we take a two point loss up to a really
(48:22):
good football team on the road, I mean, hey, we're
not even more victories around here, but we got to
take it on the chin and keep it pushing.
Speaker 6 (48:29):
It's crazy Jay Walls do with the Colts come in
here this weekend. This is a matchup the Texans should
win and should win handily. But you look at the Colts.
They're surging. They've won four of their last five. They've
been doing it with Anthony Richardson in and out of
the lineup. Joe Flacco got in their for three games.
Jonathan Taylor's been in and out of the lineup, but
they're doing it defensively. Look at the last two games
(48:50):
they won twenty to seventeen and sixteen to ten. If
I'm Demico Ryans, I'm telling the Texans, look at what
the Colts have been doing these last couple weeks. We're
better than those teams that they're being. We better go
score some points this week because if they hold you
to twenty points, I don't feel good about this one.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
Yeah, I mean, like, I don't know, man, I mean,
I know we all try to make predictions about how
these games are gonna go. I don't know how the
game is gonna go. But I feel like them coming
into here, it's homecoming week, we celebrating, we putting off
for Andre Johnson making the Hall of Fame again.
Speaker 1 (49:25):
I think that the.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
Stadium, I think I think the stadium is gonna be
crazy this week, and I think the boys are gonna
go out there with a lot of energy and absolutely
get it done against the coach. This last game in
Buffalo was a little bit worried, but you know, hopefully
we can go out here and take care.
Speaker 1 (49:39):
Of benness against the coach. All right, we're at home.
Speaker 9 (49:42):
We got Jonathan Wells, and we know how this team
plays at home versus on the road. Texans now five
and five in the Domico Era on the road that
in the regular season. I do believe. All right, let's
pause here, gentlemen. Jay Wells, you're gonna stay with us,
I believe for another segment if you can, and we'll continue.
It is because I got to ask you something again
from a running backs perspective. I heard something from the
(50:05):
Miko and one of the other offensive linemen corroborated and
it involves the tight ends and the backs. So y'all
hold right there. We get Jay Wells on the other side.
This is next up. The legendary KB and me to the.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
Neck to the dirt trove.
Speaker 4 (50:19):
This is Next Up. You kind of hit on everything
I wanted to say with stan Or Fleet and Chris
Gordy on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
All right, we hold up, Welcome back to next Up.
Speaker 9 (50:31):
On a second take Tuesday, Sports Sox seven ninety Stan Fleet, Gordon,
Jonathan Wells running back his days, and the Houston Texans
rocking that jersey number thirty two over the NRG. On Sundays,
we'll talk maybe a little bit about what's going on
Ohio State this year. Got jack in brother wasn't feeling
real great last week about this time. Nonetheless, Jay Wells
(50:53):
Texans go up to Lambeau. It was a game that
I thought would be tough for them to win, especially
giving the mind of defenders. You mentioned Nico being out
as well. I had the Texans coming up short twenty
four to twenty three. They lose what was it, twenty
four to twenty two. Obviously a walk off field goal there.
Something I saw in the chronicle made me think about you.
(51:16):
In preparation for this interview, Jonathan m Alexander, friend of ours,
brother does a good job on the Texans beat. I
gotta get Jay and May back on the show here soon. Nonetheless,
he broke down like five questions coming off of the
Green Bay game, and one of the sections he says,
obviously too much pressure on CJ.
Speaker 7 (51:37):
Stroud, meaning he was under duress.
Speaker 9 (51:40):
There's a quote from right guard Shack Mason, We've got
to be better.
Speaker 2 (51:44):
We just got to be better.
Speaker 9 (51:45):
But then right after that, Jonathan Alexander ads Laramie Jeremie
Tonsel left tackle said that the offensive line and running
backs must communicate and be on the same page to
pick up stunts.
Speaker 2 (52:02):
Okay, jam May, let's do this for the people.
Speaker 9 (52:07):
I think people underestimate the amount of verbiage that is
communicated in an NFL huddle. But then also like pre snap,
so let's break the huddle and we'll give the people
from your vantage point, We'll give the people.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
All right.
Speaker 9 (52:21):
CJ comes into the huddle, he says, all right, all right,
we're gonna go Scott left, why sell jet pro z
stick on the backside? Break all right? They go up
to the line defenders like me, we're doing what we do,
Jay Welles, what is tons of what? How are you
getting a communication? How do you think this works? And
we know having not on the practice field with slower
(52:43):
You've been closer than I have. How much responsibility do
the backs have for how leaky this thing has been?
Speaker 7 (52:49):
Up front?
Speaker 2 (52:49):
What does it sound like?
Speaker 1 (52:53):
I mean, I mean, I'm seeing a lot of those
guys get beat or one on one. The backs did.
Speaker 2 (52:58):
Get confused on the Sometimes, man, it's happening so fast, bro,
and sometimes the communication is unspoken, Like you just know,
if you're a left tackle, you got somebody in that gap,
you gotta slide down Sometime.
Speaker 1 (53:13):
That bat gotta come off the edge.
Speaker 2 (53:15):
Sometimes I gotta take the linebacker and I gotta scan
all the way backside to be prepared for the corner
to come off that backside blitz like they got CJ
from behind it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, So it really just
depends on the scheme. I think everybody takes some blame
in it. The running back is the last guy. It's
the last security back. It's the last security back there
before your guy gets hit. So I always try to
(53:36):
take a little bit of extra time scan and see.
Speaker 1 (53:38):
If I can help any of the lining out before
I get into my route.
Speaker 2 (53:42):
It just depends on how they teach you, the man,
but I'm sure there's enough blame to go around, that's
for sure, all.
Speaker 9 (53:47):
Right in that same vein, and it's everything you said
is fair. I don't have a problem with that. Again,
you've done it more than I have, so I take
you word for it. I'm just not accustomed to hearing
highly paid offensive linemen talk about Yeah, it takes all
of us the backs in the tight ends.
Speaker 2 (54:06):
Like, here's what I think.
Speaker 9 (54:07):
If this is San Francisco and let's say for whatever
reason they couldn't run the ball, well, I think we
would hear Trent Williams say something like I gotta be better.
It starts with me as unacceptable. We have to establish
the line of script. I just I'm seeing a lot
of finests on this tape, man, and I just don't
like what I'm hearing from a group that is designed
(54:28):
to set the tone. How does that land for you?
Speaker 1 (54:32):
Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
You know, I'm definitely not one about going out there
throwing your teammates under the bus, not saying that.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
That's what Tonso did.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
I didn't hear it, but yeah, it's all about eye.
You know, we all got to.
Speaker 1 (54:42):
Take responsibility, even if it's not your fault.
Speaker 2 (54:44):
Sometimes you got to take that link and just say
eyes or we have to be better.
Speaker 1 (54:48):
You know what I'm saying. I think that's basically what
he's saying. I don't think he's trying to throw anybody.
Speaker 2 (54:52):
Oh, nor do I, nor do I YIG. Yet there
is a lot of communication that has to go in
between the offensive line, the quarterback and and those running
backs though to try to get the try to get
some pressure off of CJ.
Speaker 9 (55:02):
You and I are in agreement here, but I want
to ask it so the people can hear it. When
CJ threw that through that helmet on the ground, you
saw him on the sideline. CJ was hot number one.
They are smacking my bro there around. Wait a minute,
what does my standardlytics tell me?
Speaker 2 (55:17):
I saw this.
Speaker 9 (55:18):
I wanted to bring this up here, c J Stroud
getting hit? Where is this at? I know there's the
pressure raid there it is. I don't know why I.
Speaker 2 (55:26):
Can't find my sacks.
Speaker 9 (55:27):
Nonetheless, I think there are only two other quarterbacks in
the league there it is only Deshaun Watson and Daniel
Jones have been sacked more than c J. Stroud in
twenty twenty four. The frustration is clearly mounting. You played
with quarterbacks. We've been around the game. We've seen guys.
We've seen the greatest Tom Brady, Peyton Mann and Drew Brees,
(55:47):
Anon Rodgers. I've seen guys Lamar Jackson. I've seen guys
go not crazy and embarrassed the old line. But is
it now time that we see c J. Stroud go
look fellas damn lessontries get it together.
Speaker 2 (56:02):
I can't work back here. It felt to me like.
Speaker 9 (56:05):
They just expect, because he typically does, they just expect
CJ to make it happen, just be great all the
time and mask all of our issues. Do you think
it's time for CJ to be a bit more demonstrative
and verbal in his communication and leadership.
Speaker 2 (56:22):
Yes, I've always been I've always watched the game from
a different perspective, especially the quarterback, because you're so much
of that leader just body language. I'll be honest. I
hate it when he came off and through the helmet.
I never like to see that. I actually did that
in the game in Minnesota and Chris Carter was there
at the game.
Speaker 1 (56:39):
We were planning.
Speaker 2 (56:39):
I was in college at the time, and I threw
my helmet off and he came right up to me
like Hey, we don't move like that. Man, you're having
a great game, come on, get yourself together. And you know,
hopefully somebody was there there to tell CJ the same thing,
because we need the leader to always be a leader.
But I understand the frustration. But yes, it's time for
him to verbally get on some of these guys taill
make it on their hands. Yeah, exactly. You guys are
(57:00):
getting paid a lot of money and I expect to
be have a clean pocket back here when I'm trying
to do what I gotta do. So yeah, it's definitely
time for him to be more demonstratives, to be more
on their head, and I think he will.
Speaker 9 (57:12):
You good with that going seeing CJ. And it's a
fine line. I'm not talking about embarrassed guys. Yeah, but
you you have seen the great quarterbacks in this league
that have a lot of wins and rings. Go, this
is unacceptable. I want everybody to see that. I demand
more from you. I think it's time that we see
that from cjstrip Well, I don't even know if he
(57:32):
needs to do.
Speaker 6 (57:32):
I think more on the coaching stat again, like to
reiterate the point earlier, the fact that all five starting
Onlignement played one hundred percent of the snaps on Saturn
on Sunday. I just I would start, like practice this week,
I'd start mixing in other guys for reps. I'd start,
I'd go, hey, first team unit, No, Ken your Green
not so fast. Let's uh, Kendrick Green, Let's get you
in there, Jared Patterson, Let's try you. You know, like
(57:55):
start sending a message that just because you make a
ton of money and you and you know you the
sip slast week, doesn't mean we're gonna keep rolling you
out there. And once you get your ass speed, I
like where your head is? Jay Wells, I come to you.
Do you think? And I'm gonna give you three names.
Speaker 9 (58:10):
Do you think Shaq Mason, Lammie Tonzl and Titus Howard
have any fear of being pulled off the field because
of their lack of performance at any time in this
twenty four season.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
I highly doubt it. I mean, that's our three best linemen,
So no, they do not. They're gonna learn on the fly.
They're gonna get better on the run.
Speaker 2 (58:31):
Like I said, they stopped jumping off side thank god,
the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (58:36):
So I think they're just your team of work man.
Speaker 2 (58:38):
Like I said, they got a lot of guys going
in and out and they just got to continue to
get better.
Speaker 5 (58:42):
Man.
Speaker 2 (58:42):
Every week's not gonna be pretty, but we definitely can't
have too many more weeks like this because this has
been two weeks we played against the NFC North and
their defense has been too much for us to handle.
Speaker 1 (58:51):
So we gotta figure that out.
Speaker 9 (58:53):
I do add, Gordon, if you have another question, go
ahead let a rip. I think that the NFC North
has clearly proven thus far through seven weeks that is
the best division in football. Is the only division in
football that does not have a team five hundred or worse.
Everybody's got to win a record, including the Bears, the
only team of the four that of the three thus
far that the Texans have beat. Gordy, you got something else,
(59:16):
yeses when you played Jay Watson? And how often was it?
Speaker 6 (59:20):
You know, Like, guys feel comfortable in their skin, oh
on the starter, no matter what. But like, and there
a certain point where you got to send a message
as a coach like, hey, we're not We're not accepting
subpar performances.
Speaker 7 (59:30):
I don't give it.
Speaker 6 (59:31):
Damn how high paid you are and how safe in
your skin you feel like sometimes you got to send
a message and go, we need the best players out there,
and if you're not performing at a high level, we're
not afraid to pull you.
Speaker 1 (59:42):
Nah.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
That sounds good, Gordy, But guess what you only got
You only got fifty three guys on on the roster.
Speaker 1 (59:49):
Yeah, yeah, about to say you you got you got
one back up, and he's the backup for a reason
for the most part.
Speaker 2 (59:54):
So therefore, nine times out of ten when you coming
off and putting that second string in, you're losing a
little bit of production.
Speaker 1 (59:59):
So there for you. You can't just say.
Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
Oh, you guys are getting paid, I'm gonna beach everybody. Nah,
that's not how it works.
Speaker 1 (01:00:05):
They're going to continue to play.
Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
I'm sure they're playing hard, but they got to figure
some things out the coaching scheme. I didn't I didn't
like that they didn't move the pocket. I thought they
should move the pocket a lot more than they were
trying to move it. And they had CJ trying to
stand back there and just throw the ball inside the
pocket sometimes, And that was the recip people disaster, because
like I said, we could not block them, so I
thought they maybe should have moved the pocket a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:00:27):
More, try to help the offensive line out.
Speaker 2 (01:00:29):
It's like it's enough blame to go around, but the
offensive line has gotta be better.
Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
We know this.
Speaker 9 (01:00:35):
Former Texans running back Jonathan Wells, friend of the station,
friend of the show, hanging out with us for another
couple of minutes here prid to us, going to break.
I think the Texans have now done themselves a disservice, gentlemen.
It is documented, it's on tape, and they are a
few different ways that you can do it. The Chicago
Bears came in here and pressure the but Jesus out
(01:00:56):
of them, Buffalo didn't. Now Green Bay done it. I'm
leaving out somebody else that has done it. I think
Jacksonville got after them a little bit as well. We
know what the Vikings did. How difficult is it to remove?
In other words, what I'm saying is they have now
created doubt and given the other team's confidence for the
(01:01:18):
rest of the season until they take it off tape
for multiple weeks, everybody's gonna bring pressure. Do you think
that's a fair statement by me, Jonathan? And has that
been Jay Wells? Your experience. Once you put something on tape,
whether it's special teams defense in this case, we're talking
about the lack of past protection.
Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
It's a problem until it's not a problem. Yeah, it's
a problem until it's not a problem.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
I agree with you, man, I.
Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
Don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
I don't know what you want. But like I said,
tell me, they.
Speaker 2 (01:01:47):
Gonna get it blocked Jay Wells. That's what the hell
I want to tell me. They gotta keep they gotta
keep showing up the practice, they gotta keep working, and.
Speaker 1 (01:01:53):
They gotta keep him better.
Speaker 5 (01:01:55):
I don't know what you want to already making one
hundred billion dollars.
Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
You want you or not me?
Speaker 9 (01:02:00):
You sound like Gordon. Now I'm gonna say this again,
maybe that this thing is this thing on? See only
two starting quarterbacks in the league have been sacked more
than C. J. Stroud, Deshaun Watson his season is over
and Daniel Jones.
Speaker 2 (01:02:14):
What are we doing? Fix it?
Speaker 9 (01:02:16):
Bobby Sloyd, Chris strawsa hell get Jay Welles in.
Speaker 2 (01:02:20):
Somebody stop my quarterback from getting hit.
Speaker 1 (01:02:24):
Yeah, I thought I thought it was cute a couple
of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
But yeah, nah, like that game there, Yeah, you know,
we definitely got we deuinitely can't keep taking these type
of hit especially especially he's getting frustrated.
Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
Is what you don't want to do it, yea.
Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
They just have him to start losing this confidence, start
getting shaky and quick feet back there.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
That's what we can't have, you know. And he's been
so good, so let me take that back. He's been
great under pressure.
Speaker 2 (01:02:49):
So this is not like the teams are just starting
to pressure him. No, they've been trying to pressure him.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
He's just been better than the pressure.
Speaker 2 (01:02:57):
Unfortunately, this week we were not able to get anything
off in the passing game at all. And like I said,
like until Nico gets back, hopefully we can figure that out.
Speaker 9 (01:03:07):
All right, Jay Wells, let me pay some bills here
if I could, bro Let me go back down to
your native New Wallers and show out Native Louisiana. Excuse me,
show out my man JB. Thibodeau on the way out
though you'll be over there on Sunday. You feel like
the Texans get back right, Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Yeah, yeah. It's too big of a weekend for us
having let down this weekend. They gotta come in there
handle their business. So oncoming week man, shout out to
my boy Drake. We're gonna put on for him again
in h town. So if y'all out, man, y'all come
pull up on us.
Speaker 9 (01:03:36):
We in there, my man Jonathan Wells, former Texans running back,
Ohio State great as well. Appreciate you dropping by, always
entertaining for a second. Take Tuesday with Northfleet and going
to Hill next up.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
Brother.
Speaker 7 (01:03:47):
You know I'll be on your line here a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:03:49):
Appreciate your boss.
Speaker 9 (01:03:50):
Thank you.
Speaker 7 (01:03:51):
There it is you be well all right wherever you are?
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
Not sure what Joe?
Speaker 9 (01:03:54):
That's right, Jay Welles is out west somewhere off team,
keep going west. Wherever you are in the sound of
my voice, where do you building here in the city
of Houston. Maybe you're making your way up north up
forty five a bit. Perhaps you got eyes headed out west.
Doesn't matter. I recommend a guy that can get the
job done, and he does it with the right attitude
and the right level of professionalism. I'm talking about JB.
(01:04:15):
Thibodaux Homes and Properties, not your average home builder. I
assure you their blueprints are designed to take save you,
excuse me, time and money. Wherever you are in that process,
you got issues with a contractor are the architect. In
getting back to you, JB will work with you and
not just work with it. Teach you how this process works,
(01:04:37):
relationships throughout the city of Houston, what's zoning and permits,
and all of the rigamaro that comes in commercial and
or residential construction, whether it's a new build or rehab.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
JB.
Speaker 9 (01:04:50):
Thibodeau can bring your vision to reality. More details at
Jbthibodeau dot com. Tell them stan Flee stand what up?
That's Jbthibodau dot com.
Speaker 7 (01:05:04):
Onto Next to.
Speaker 4 (01:05:08):
More of Next Up continues now on Sports Talk seven
ninety Home of Your World Champion Houston Astros.
Speaker 8 (01:05:21):
Yeah, the passing tack couldn't have get going because I
mean I wanted to start with, of course protection, also
the routes. We had some plays, we dropped the past,
we dropped the test down. It's just overall, it was
just it wasn't clean from an execution standpoint, from the
route distribution to protection. And I think quarterback was sped
(01:05:44):
up a little bit, and you know it caused some
issues for us.
Speaker 9 (01:05:47):
If Jamiic o'ryans took to the podium yesterday afternoon addressing
whatever that was in Green Bay Uh, it wasn't an
ass kicking at the level lot of Minnesota vikings, but
it was going to how do we characterize because we
agreed Minnesota they just got their doors blown off. Green
(01:06:08):
Bay was more like death by a thousand cuts. I
don't know what what what analogy or parallel I want
to use there, but it's a gut punch because it
was a winnable game. That game was there for the taking.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
You took the ball away three times, they didn't and
didn't turn it over any.
Speaker 7 (01:06:27):
If you've done it, if you've done a fourth yield of.
Speaker 9 (01:06:29):
One, if you challenge the ball, challenge the plane, maybe
you get the fourth one.
Speaker 7 (01:06:33):
That's what I thought was interesting.
Speaker 6 (01:06:34):
I going back and rewatching that last drive, and yes,
I'm gonna keep harping on. And you had the lead.
Oh we're here, get a stop here, I almost wondered.
And it's just me. This is Chris Gordy, the fest coordinator.
I run, I rushed too, and drop I put at
your DB's because they weren't getting home.
Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
They were.
Speaker 6 (01:06:54):
One time they forced Short of Love to throw it
a little bit quicker, and it was an incompletion. They
sacked him through times, not on that last drive, the
last drive, it was a surgeon going to work. Huh Scoppel,
just you know, go to work. Yeah, fifty yards big
bag boom gave him a field goal. And by the way,
we didn't we didn't have talked enough about the dirt
bag rubbing on flight attendance and Brandon McMahon come in
(01:07:18):
off the street and off kicking off the street. I
thought he I thought there was a chance he was
gonna miss it, and that thing wasn't. Even when it
left his leg. You're like, so that's money.
Speaker 9 (01:07:28):
There are some statistics out there that prove actually icing
the kicker is to the advantage of the kicker.
Speaker 6 (01:07:35):
When I was like, have done even got the practice
kick in and it was money, and then the real
kick was.
Speaker 9 (01:07:43):
Not a real kick, was a closer call. He almost
it started to say a left, but he got it
through there. Obviously, I thought it was good all the way.
Speaker 6 (01:07:51):
But just point being like they're they're rushing for and
even Tony Romo says on the broadcast.
Speaker 7 (01:07:57):
Like, Jim, you got some time that's here.
Speaker 6 (01:08:00):
I wonder from Texans might bring some pressure and drive,
you know, but like I don't know, like I don't
think that. I don't think you blitzed. I don't think no, no,
no no. I rushed my phone and jun I gotta run.
But I almost say, like because they can't, you know,
you're deficient back there, Like you don't have your best
you know, Kamari Lassiter, you don't have Neville Hewett or
(01:08:21):
you don't have you know, Alshai here like Tyler Kraft
is eating catching everything out here on the outside. Like
I almost just wonder, like we have been better. Just
have some extra just some extra bodies back there. So
here's the thing to down linemen and put everybody you
you guys, you hang out over here in the flat,
you hang out over in this area.
Speaker 7 (01:08:42):
Just yeah, just like uh, you know, like last play
the game.
Speaker 9 (01:08:45):
Like like prevent defense, like almost just have extra people
back there. So to your point, right, let's look at
that last drive. And it's an interesting thought. It's not
what I would have done out of run my defense.
I might have gone Nickel personnel and gotten me Jake
Hansen out of the game. I wouldn't have been out
there with two linebackers, I don't think. But like it's
(01:09:05):
first and ten at the Green Bay thirty now yeah,
Jordan Love is in the shotgun. Second down Jordan Love
and the shotgun. Third and two Jordan Love was still
in the shotgun like he lit every play they run
their offense out of the gun. So for me, yeah,
it kind of lures you to pass rush. But look
(01:09:27):
at the down and distance first and ten second and
ten third and two first and ten second and ten
first and ten first and five. They really couldn't get
Jordan Love too, second and twelve third and fifteen like
they couldn't get him even third and ten. They couldn't
get to it to be able to truly. And so
I consider that last drive that's just great coaching by
(01:09:50):
Matt Lafleur. I have to tip my cap to him
on as we move, and we'll grab Conroo James here
before we leave this segment. And we got one more
to go before we had things over to Matt, Thomas
and Ross. But some people and I saw this pop
up and I wanted to do some homework on this.
Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
I wonder if.
Speaker 9 (01:10:07):
Domiko didn't challenge because I don't know that Domiko has
a ton of confidence in their challenge operation, staying what
the hell are you talking about? In his career as
a head coach. Demiko Ryans is two for five in challenges,
including zero for two this year. It's just something that's
(01:10:29):
quiet behind the scenes. Go look into that operation. We
gotta get that cleaned up. Something else that popped up
for me, And I asked Aaron Wilson, this is it
possible that Nick Cassario finds another defensive back and like
makes a trade before the deadline to go get like
a real serviceable, semi starting level corner because with Lasser
(01:10:54):
having his shoulder, that's not going to heal during get
NFL season now, it's not going to require certain he's
likely gonna miss this week and next week. If we
listen to what the reports are, if something happens to Stingley,
we know his injury rap sheet. They're out there with
guys like D'Angelo Ross. D'Angelo Ross literally had a perfect
(01:11:17):
passer rating. Did Jordan Love when targeting him one fifty
eight point three seven for seven when targeting D'Angelo Ross,
including ninety five yards in a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
You can't roll him out there anymore. He just can't.
Speaker 9 (01:11:31):
Now, not every team is Jodan Love and the pack
is wide receivers, but that's just no, can't allow that,
all right, I said, Comrade James, I know where we
at on the clock, Connor Comrao James, give me like
thirty seconds less please.
Speaker 12 (01:11:45):
Okay, Well, the barbarians are at the gate staphs. That's
what happened with Green Bay. Okay, there's many times. Yeah, yeah,
they're sacking the city. That's right, it's a problem. Here's
not a problem anymore. And then the next staff is,
what about the health of your quarterback? How many shots
can he take back there and still remain viable for
(01:12:07):
the rest of the season.
Speaker 9 (01:12:08):
That's my thirty seconds understood, my man, Comroo James. We'll
get closing remarks on second Take Tuesday. I'm excited the
NBA Stars tonight. I'm also excited that some young players
for the Rockets are gonna be here for a little while.
I'll be over at Toyota Center tomorrow night as the
Charlotte Hornets are in town to face the Rockets and
(01:12:29):
open the night over there for the Rockets, and I'm
pretty stoked about that. Let's come back, let's wrap things up,
co ople. Things we want to get to first take,
First take, Lord, Second take Tuesday.
Speaker 7 (01:12:41):
Here on next Up, Gordere, I blame you Sports Talks
even ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:12:48):
Up and back up now down door please and Chris
Gordy on next up on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 10 (01:13:00):
Sea.
Speaker 1 (01:13:01):
Well, Tank, it just has to keep going.
Speaker 8 (01:13:02):
I believe in Tank, believe he'll be able to make
some big time explosive plays for us. He just has
to keep going and he will do that. I have
all the faith in Tank.
Speaker 9 (01:13:14):
Jamiko Ryan's on a local favorite tank down oer for
four zero catches four targets on Sunday at Green Bay.
We know the drop in the end zone which was
crucial early in that ball game. And as we wrap
up second take Tuesday and I put the bed at
this Green Bay game. There are some other things that
(01:13:36):
popped up, such as Jonathan Wells was asked or he said,
if Nico had been in this game, he thinks the
offense would have looked it would have been more potent,
more proficient. I don't know. And the reason I say
that is because the offensive line was getting absolutely destroyed
(01:13:59):
by simulated pressure. I said this with the eighteen yesterday
Adam Wexler, Adam Clanton afternoons here on seven ninety starting
at three o'clock do my normal Monday's football at five,
as you know, Gordon, and a good segment by you
with them on Fridays by the way, doing some college
football stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
I enjoy.
Speaker 6 (01:14:22):
I enjoy your segment with them because you don't back
down the wax like Clinton do.
Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
Oh ac he said that.
Speaker 9 (01:14:29):
I didn't say that, so like I made this statement,
like Jeff Hafley, the decordinator for Green Bay made CJ
c ghosts the simulated pressure. They only blitzed five times
on CJ's twenty five dropbacks. They made the offensive line
and CJ believe something was happening that was not happening,
(01:14:51):
and that's what a good effective defense does. CJ was
three for nine for forty yards when under pressure. The
thing that's mind boggling for me. CJ coming into the
game on Sunday was the number one quarterback in the
league in passer rating. When facing the blitz. What the
(01:15:15):
hell was going on on Sunday that changed?
Speaker 2 (01:15:18):
That?
Speaker 9 (01:15:19):
Was it just too many body blows and all of
a sudden, CJ's eyes started to go from downfield.
Speaker 6 (01:15:25):
I think they hit it right in front of They
hit him early, and then it was you know, he
was already he was rattled so like there was somebody
pointed out there was one of the plays where if
he he had a couple like another second had he
just waited, but it was like he was he got
answer feeling I.
Speaker 7 (01:15:41):
Was feeling it. And that's all I always say.
Speaker 6 (01:15:43):
Like a lot of college games, guys, will you know,
you'll see teams like in Alabama will blitz early, hit
you early to make you rattle to go now later
when they're not blitzing, you're feeling it there, Oh god,
they're coming.
Speaker 7 (01:15:55):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
What else did I say?
Speaker 7 (01:15:58):
They just did a great job baiting it. I mean
watching something the.
Speaker 2 (01:16:01):
Bro They eleven tackles for loss.
Speaker 9 (01:16:05):
They were playing in the backfield of the Texans all game.
Speaker 7 (01:16:09):
It was tenfoil You're the tenfoil old line.
Speaker 9 (01:16:12):
It's wild, all right? What else I want to get
to here? So I had that Oh going back to
Tankdale next gen stats, there wasn't a whole lot of separation,
is what I think CJ would say if we could
give him true Sarah Stefan Diggs averaged one point nine
yards of separation Tankdale just one point seven. Not a
(01:16:37):
ton of room there for CJ to get the ball
into but we've seen him do more with less. We
just expect Stroud to be better. Just the second time
in CJ's career, he's finishing with less than one hundred
yards passing, the first time in a game that he
has finished. He was under one hundred yards that Jets
game last year, but obviously he was concussed and left
(01:16:58):
that game for the sake of time. That's about all
I want to get to from a second. Oh, there
was also one on that final drive, the Kymie Fair
bean field goal. If Kenyon Green can make one block,
Joe Mixon scores touchdown one of those tackles for loss,
Joe Mixon's out the gate and Kenyan Green did not.
(01:17:21):
Let's take one phone call. We'll come back something for
the Rockets and want to highlight, and then we'll wrap
up from there. John on the northwest side of the city.
Your last call it yeah, mixed up?
Speaker 11 (01:17:30):
Hey, thanks dam Yeah. I'm gonna harp on the offensive line,
and I'm still down on the coach because I mean
the offensive line coach, because this offensive line has shown
zero improvement from the beginning of the season. I mean,
you would expect there see some improvement, but they still
look confused. They still don't know who they're blocking. They
(01:17:51):
don't block, they don't handle slants, and there are so
many people, there's so many guys that got into the
backfield that just blitzed, you know, unchallenged. And you know,
I'm starting to fear for CJ's health because he's taken
a lot of shots. And I just thought it was
a horrible performance by the offensive line. And you know,
again they just look disorganized. They there's just something's not
(01:18:13):
right there. They're just not communicating there. They just looked disorganized,
like what not to do. And I don't know these
teams they can they seem to confuse them real easily.
And it just seems like they're mixed up on their
assignments and the whole bit. And I just don't see.
They don't seem like real prepared, don't seem well, you know,
bottom line, they just don't seem well coached. And so
(01:18:35):
I'm I'm I don't know, I'm I'm just seeing. I'm
just getting frustrated because they have gone nowhere. There's been
no improvement in that offensive line at all, and we're
what we're uh, seven games going on, almost coming up
on half yeah, seven games.
Speaker 9 (01:18:47):
We are I appreciate the colleg John well up against
it just a little bit. Gordon. We are forty one
percent through the twenty twenty four season and the Texans
have been inconsistent. And it's thoughts up front. Y'all heard me,
regardless of the names, this was going to be about
how did this offensive line perform? All right, NBA, I'm excited,
(01:19:10):
y'all heard me. Do the DraftKings. Read the new pick
six app. Make sure you go look at that download
that all the things. Yesterday Gordy, Jalen Green and Apron Shingoon,
the last day that they were eligible for extensions, neither
get the rookie max. Jalen Green does something a bit progressive.
(01:19:31):
Sham Seranea of ESPN, It's gonna take a while to
get used to saying that. Had this to say about
Jalen Green's three, one hundred and six million dollar extension.
Speaker 3 (01:19:39):
And this is a really trendsetting deal for Jalen Green
because he has a player.
Speaker 2 (01:19:42):
Option Malika in this contract.
Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
He's the first player in NBA history to sign a
two plus one contract extension on a rookie deal with
his team that allows him the opportunity to have a
player option just after two years of this extension and
him his agents at CAA Sports. They looked at the
TV money, the salary cap and they found a structure
that now will allow him to sign the short term deal.
(01:20:06):
It's a first of its kind deal and also be
able to pursue getting more than the maximum contact. You
think about his max right now, it's two hundred and
twenty six million dollars. He's going to be able to
make two hundred and forty million dollars potentially over the
course on the next five years.
Speaker 9 (01:20:21):
All right, Jordan Jalen Green signed a first of its
kind two years guarantee player option in the third year,
allowing him to hit the market in what four seasons.
Speaker 6 (01:20:33):
From now or something. Yeah, it's a win win now.
This is this is a lot like has somebody described
to me. It's a lot like that that initial deal
yourd un signed with the Astros, where was like they
could have made him wait for years to get big money,
but you know, it's not what you're worth. But it's
a bigger payday now and if you live up to it,
you can get paid more, you know, in a couple
(01:20:53):
of years.
Speaker 9 (01:20:54):
Kevin Pelton the ESPN dot Com on our way out.
Alfronshan Guns five year, one hundred and eighty five million
extension also has a player option. They essentially get shing
Gun for eighty percent of what the rookie max would
have been And if they both ball out, these look
like it's great deals, no question, all right. More Rockets
(01:21:14):
commentary to Mars the season kicks off. That'll do it
for us, Connady mcgovernin for Chris Gordy, Jonathan Wells as
well as Aaron Wilson. I am stand Northfleet. Thank you
for allowing us to continue to maintain our status as
your home for Houston sports.
Speaker 2 (01:21:28):
Enjoy your lunch, God willing, we'll do it again tomorrow.
Y'll be well. Peace to you
