Once upon a time, in the cozy chaos of my kitchen, I offered my friend a dish I’d lovingly prepared. It was a masterpiece of stir-fried vegetables, tantalizing spices, and, yes, tofu. But my friend’s reaction was priceless—a mix of horror and disbelief. “Tofu?” they asked, as if I’d served them alien food. “I can’t eat that. Won’t it mess with my hormones?”

Let’s unpack that tofu-phobia with science, humor, and a dash of sass—and along the way, dispel another fear: transphobia. Turns out, both have more in common than you think.

Hormones: Everyone’s Got Them

Here’s the first shocker: no one is purely “masculine” or “feminine.” Every human body produces estrogen and testosterone. The burliest lumberjack? Estrogen helps regulate his bone density. The fiercest femme fatale? Testosterone supports her energy levels. Hormones don’t make us who we are—they just keep us functioning.

Tofu, the food so unfairly maligned, contains phytoestrogens, plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen. But before you run screaming from your miso soup, let’s clear something up: phytoestrogens are not the same as human estrogen. They’re weaker and don’t throw your hormone levels out of whack. So, no, your tofu tacos won’t “feminize” anyone.

The Irony of Tofu-Phobia

Here’s the kicker: the “manliest” steak dinner might expose you to more estrogen than tofu ever could. Why? Industrially farmed animals are often treated with hormones to grow faster. So next time someone sneers at tofu, maybe hand them a fact sheet along with their steak knife.

What This Has to Do With Transphobia

Just as people fear tofu for imaginary reasons, transphobia thrives on myths. People worry that embracing trans identities challenges their understanding of gender, just as tofu challenges their idea of “real food.” But the truth? Just like you don’t need to fear tofu’s impact on masculinity, you don’t need to fear someone’s authentic self impacting your identity.

Everyone’s unique mix of traits, whether hormonal or societal, makes them one of one—a phrase I embrace because I’ve walked the line of misunderstanding myself. Identity is as personal as what’s on your plate.

Embrace Your Plate—and Your Look

Whether you’re rocking ripped jeans, a ball gown, or both, that’s your look. Own it. Nobody is exactly anything, and that’s the beauty of humanity. If we can celebrate individuality in food, fashion, and gender expression, imagine the harmony we’d create.

Mic Drop Moment

So next time someone scoffs at tofu or tries to tell you who they think you are, serve them this truth:

• Tofu is healthy and versatile.

• People are complex and multifaceted.

• And life’s too short to let fear—of food or identity—define our choices.

Now, who’s ready for seconds?
