Skylar-Bree Takyi is a queer Black woman, Jersey native, and screenwriter. She studied History & Literature at Harvard University with a focus in ethnic studies and queer theory, graduating Magna Cum Laude and winning the Lee Drama Prize for the student with the most promise in the dramatic arts.
After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in storytelling. Since then, she has gained representation at CAA, written on Bad Robot and JJ Abram's HBO Max series, SUBJECT TO CHANGE, and written for two seasons of a renowned filmmaker’s soon-to-be-announced fantasy series at Netflix. The daughter of Nigerian and Ghanaian immigrants, Skylar has long been influenced by her cultural communities, their love for storytelling, and the ease with which they blur the mundane and the miraculous. Her writing is informed by African diasporic studies, queer theory, and gender studies, as well as speculative genres like sci-fi, horror, and magical realism.
In both writing and life, Skylar works to radically prioritize the most marginalized. In case that wasn’t enough, she is also a doula trainee, with the hopes of building a practice that actively combats the subpar experiences and abysmal maternal mortality rates experienced by Black American women. While writing is Skylar's first love, her love for alternative aesthetics, fashion and music is a guiding force – on an off day you can find her bleaching her eyebrows or adding more tattoos to her extensive collection.
