(00:01):
Project Mayhem Racing Day 2, theOCR main event Well yesterday
was there was like open waves. Today was like the competitive
wave I was in the competitive wave at 10:30 wasn't really mean
competitive per SE. I was just participating today
(00:23):
to see it from a participant's perspective.
I had no intentions on the trying to make it for round two,
which Round 2 is just running the course again.
If you're like, I think it was like top six or top 7 males went
on to the second round. I had no, well probably shot or
(00:50):
intent. So those two factors right
there, no shot or no intent making it to the second round.
So I took it easy, was just having fun.
I wanted to see what the course was like in a nice casual pace
so I could take it in a little bit more and get my perspective.
And then second round, I wanted to go out and run with the
(01:11):
elites and video it. So I wasn't participating.
I was just strictly there to video the elites doing the
obstacle course for their podiumspots.
That was pretty cool. I did get to do that, stayed
with 3rd and 4th place finisher about half the race and then
(01:32):
finally caught up the 2nd place and then went with him from, you
know, the whole second-half of the race.
So it was pretty cool to see twodifferent perspectives during
the race. Became really good footage with
my GoPro and my gimbal. I think it should come out
(01:55):
pretty good, seemed like it was working pretty clear and
stabilized today, so we'll see once I upload it, but I think
people will enjoy that footage, just watching people do it real
quick and easily. So anyway, I like the course.
(02:18):
It was a basically 44.1 mile course, 4 miles if you're just
running it, 1.1 if you actually do the swim.
So I had a mixture of different types of obstacles that people
encounter in different races. Little Creek crossings as well,
(02:43):
you know, some dirt, asphalt, stuff like that.
Pretty runnable. I would say the whole thing was
pretty runnable. There's no real like super hard
climbs or anything like that where you can slow down.
(03:06):
There was an over under through hay bells, couple walls was
already set. A swim dump, tank rig, tire flip
including walls. A cake carry a coffin.
(03:33):
What? Else was there.
I know I'm missing stuff. Skate Olympus, which was his
twist on the Spartan Olympus. Let's see what else I I forget
(03:59):
what else I'd have to look at the list.
Those are the ones off the club of my head.
So, you know, some standardized obstacles, some different ones
as well. And then the rate was pretty
hard. So overall, I would say it was a
good, really good mix. This being the first year, I
think he did a hell of a good job.
(04:22):
Courses worked very well. We were following blue flagging,
yesterday was red, today was blue, then you had blue arrows
down as well. Made things easier to follow.
I don't think he could get lost, you know, Must have to try.
(04:47):
So if anybody got lost, that wastheir own fault.
There was a low crawl too. But the low crawl was kind of,
it was like on an angled bank. So as you're going under it,
(05:10):
you're sort of like slipping down the hills.
You got to make sure you stayed up a little bit.
I don't know, People seem like they enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it I would say. There was a mix between like say
(05:36):
a train race and a smart 5K likedifficulty wise.
Yeah. I think it would be in between
those two. Like I said, for difficulty wise
purposes and being a first year,I think everything went pretty
(05:59):
smoothly. I didn't see any hiccups and I
was being a little observant so I can give him feedback later
what I saw, if anything. Yeah, so I know he's he's going
to watch this So so maybe I don't have to tell them like I I
(06:20):
didn't see anything wrong on thecourse.
I mean, the, I mean, the only thing people are going to
complain about is he used wood instead of like metal.
But if you're not holding like 10 events, you can't really use
like metal because you have to store and stuff like that.
(06:45):
I didn't like the Kate carry. It's a little bit different, but
well, especially with a little bit of liquid in there bouncing
around. So that was kind of nice.
His take on floating walls is pretty good.
(07:05):
So next year I think with the video being uploaded, when I get
it uploaded, it'll help promote that a little bit and get some
more participation. Same with the trail race.
I didn't have any of the trail race but I wish I would have or
at least not the race itself, but many of the course itself
because it is a hard course. But heading back to the OCR
(07:29):
metals are cool if you can see that the blue band was our bibs,
which is smart because if you have a bib Derek and OCR race,
you know that thing gets like ripped off very easily.
So it was nice to have that bandwith our number written on it so
(07:52):
you don't have to worry about losing that.
So getting back to the race itself, like as I handed out
already, it was if you wanted the podium, you had to do 2
rounds. The first round you had to make
it be like top 6 or 7, whatever the case may be.
(08:16):
For men, he was like top four orfive, for women, he was going
off participation numbers and then on the second round you
each battled it out for a top three podium if you made it to
the second round. So you had it strategically
(08:36):
decide what your game plan was like you had to yesterday for
the trail race. You know, you had to be in that
top six, top 7, but you didn't want to burn yourself out, so
you couldn't make it the route to and compete at all.
So you had to figure out what your fitness level is, what your
(08:58):
ability is, and how you wanted to attack things.
So was strategic today, like howyou're going to handle yourself
during the race. So again, like a unique thing
because a, you had to strategizeand B, not only did you have to
(09:20):
finish high, you had to figure you had to go out again and do
the lap again for a second time and decided who was going to be
top three. So I think it was a pretty good
battle all around for both rounds.
(09:40):
I know there's a little bit of space between 1-2 and three, but
like four and five came in blistering hot running neck and
neck and I think only a minute may have separated top. 4.
Or into a top five, maybe 2 minutes for top five, finishing
(10:05):
on the second round. So swim, he could stand maybe
maybe a little less than half ofit going out the back.
So you did have to swim a littlebit when he had life jackets for
(10:27):
people, preservers. I guess it's a life jacket
because they went around your deck.
The orange things always get those confused.
Actually bought a couple work the other day.
Top three got money like we did yesterday, 150 and 20.
(10:51):
Then they got their school skeletons like we did yesterday.
I think the women voted to not get back out again so they
weren't out there for a second round, they just decided it at
the 1st. Sounds a little disappointing.
I wanted to see them go out and battle.
(11:12):
Again. Yeah.
Like I said, the rig was hard a couple I don't even know what
how to describe the the holes, but you definitely had to know
what you were doing to finish itand have some good strength.
(11:34):
The duck tank wasn't too cold today, thankfully it was
yesterday when they were playingaround with it.
The floating walls work too. Hard, but I.
Know how to handle those? Those are like one of my
(11:56):
favourite obstacles. It was, well it was like 2
floating wall type things, a balance beam and then a rope to
a bell. Some nice little twist of that.
I'm trying to think what else I don't know.
I just think it went smoothly today.
(12:19):
Really not much to say, but I think it will grow next year
pretty good once some of the clips get videos and pictures
get uploaded or it gets out a little bit more.
This is always one of those hardareas to draw from.
(12:42):
Well, I don't want to say you'vegot a lot of population that's
into like running and racing andOCR trail races and stuff like
that. It's just hard to get the masses
market to the masses. We'll put it that way.
I haven't been able to figure itout because, you know, pulling
(13:04):
from the Pittsburgh crowds, you either get like say 500 people
or you get 20 at a race. I haven't found that little
niche to get 500 people pulled from there yet.
So. But I think next year will
definitely grow it more. It's just the park itself
starting to get out a little bitmore, how nice it is, the
(13:26):
facilities. So that's going to help people
draw or racers and stuff like that.
Well. It was definitely a warmer day
today at least like 60. Like when do we start instead of
(13:52):
that like 45 yesterday. I, I know the tires.
There's 4 tires. There's two like smaller ones
that you could either flip four times or the two bigger ones
that you had to flip twice. See, you had a choice on that,
(14:15):
so that was pretty cool. Well, that's.
About it, it was a little bit hard to start this morning
because I did, you know that 12 1/2 during the race yesterday
(14:36):
that I did the eight more last night.
So my legs were a little bit stiff, but it did open up.
And then when I was going out, video for the Elite Wave found a
groove when I was actually running way faster than I was
expecting to. So that was that was very nice.
(14:58):
I think. He had enough volunteers, at
least at the main obstacles. What else?
Oh, there was a last man standing at the rig today.
(15:19):
Well, eBay. So it's sort of like a third
event, I guess I'm going to callit that.
So yesterday was the the main event was the trail race, today
was the obstacle course and the last man standing rig
competition. So whoever was in that, you
(15:39):
know, they had the rig set up a certain way, everybody went
through and then they would change a thing or two, make it
harder each round. There's I think it was like a
three band system, so if you failed, you had to give up a
band. So you had three fail attempts
to complete that specific realm. There was definitely a lot of
(16:05):
younger kids from the ninja gymsthere kicking some butt.
Some of that stuff was just like, wow, that's amazing that
they can do that because I know I have no chance whatsoever
completing some of the stuff that they were doing.
So that was pretty nice. Took a bunch of those cliffs
(16:26):
probably have a couple 100 because it went way longer than
I was expecting, not knowing howgood some of those kids are.
So that was a nice little event to witness as well.
(16:48):
And there, oh, during the duringthe competitive wave, you had a
band not just with your bib number off, but you had a second
one, say 22 bands. You know, one was your bib and
the other one was for obstacle completion.
So if you felt it an obstacle during the competitive wave or
(17:10):
if you skipped 1, you had to give up a band and you weren't
eligible to go on to the second round.
You know, bands over burpees, the old OCR saying so that's how
he tackled that. I don't know if it came into
play at all. I don't know if somebody
finished, you know, like top six, top 7 and lost the band or
(17:36):
not. That I do not know because I
wasn't out front. Just some of the twists that he
put on and things that he, I'm just trying to do I think help
grow the race. I mean, today I since I really
(17:57):
wasn't competing, I can't reallyspeak too much about going up
against the competition or what happened that way just because I
was just having fun and not competing with anybody in
general. It was cool.
To see some of my friends out there today, it's probably not
(18:17):
it. I do.
I do know I scraped my knee up on that skate Limpus just tried
not to, but I end up doing it. Which was the skate Limpus was
his version of Phil Limpus, the spark race obstacle.
It was next thing after swim, like 20 yards to swim.
(18:41):
So I think by the time I got there, it was a little bit wet.
So it's hard to ruin your shoes and stuff to get a grip on the
wall. That's where I had an issue.
That's where I gave up my man. I didn't really care.
(19:02):
Plus I'm worried actual like lucky Swank trail shoes today.
Just trying to ruin them a little bit over my other trail
shoes. Stayed way too long today taking
clips and stuff. Starting to regret it now for a
(19:24):
little tired. I was going to do the 5K.
There was A5 and 10K park as well that somebody else was
going to think a lot. I didn't get up and do that
because that would have made fora really long day.
I guess I've been. Yeah, if you can't check out the
(19:51):
Project Racing, Project Mayhem Racing when he gets stuff ready
for next year, then all the videos, clips and pictures that
we posted with the, you know, the top end competition each
year, it should draw in support for next year as well.
(20:11):
See how that goes and see how next year goes as well.
