(00:00):
Fort Lanier Days 5K finished first overall in 18 O 7.
I'll show you right away this isthe month that they gave out for
the awards this year. Pretty cool design.
Same design that was on the shirts.
They gave us like a ribbon as well and I got a $50.00 gift
(00:26):
card, Dick's Sporting Goods. So happy with that stuff.
I was just happy with the mug ingeneral or even that movie
ribbon to be honest with you. Pretty good day.
It's like 50° at the start of the race.
Perfect running weather. Some years it's really cold and
frosted on the ground for the race.
(00:47):
This year's I would say it was perfect.
Couldn't ask really for anythingbetter.
Let's see, there's a hugest crowd I think they've ever had
there. Could be wrong but I know before
the thing my buddy said they had100 more than last year so I
would say it's a record crowd. Don't mind me if I got some
(01:11):
sauce on my face. I was eating a pulled pork
loaded French fries with cheese and stuff and sauce so I think I
got some. Anyway, yes, pretty good crowd.
Wasn't sure about the competition in general but I was
ready for it where my compression shorts where my
(01:32):
black like mesh race top calf sleeves, my MP3 player, my hat,
and my Endorphin pro fours I wasready to go.
It was pretty slow week for training wise.
This race actually only put me at 18 1/2, so about 1/3 of where
(01:52):
I should be for the week. Maybe that helped, I don't know.
But I ran really good today. What I was telling people was I
felt like I ran not only decently fast, but I felt fluid
and smooth. I felt like my form was spot on
(02:13):
in the entire race. One of those magical type days
you don't get too often or everything just sort of I guess
all clicks together. I didn't really have any issues
during the race at all. My legs felt good the whole
race. My breathing did get a little
(02:34):
bit heavy. I don't know, mile and a half, 2
miles in where that second hill is or the big hill that we climb
up past the diamond after going down it.
That's where my breathing was a little bit rougher, but nothing
(02:55):
horrible. I don't recognize too many
people up front. There was just a bunch of kids
and the up at the start of the race, I stayed off to the left
in front of them. So I had that left lane because
because you make a left at the end of the road and I don't want
them tripping into me. So I sort of hugged that outside
(03:19):
left lane to start the race. There was only a couple adults
or teenagers that really wanted to be up front today.
So there really wasn't as much competition as the previous
years or even the guys that finished ahead of me last year
because I think I was third lastyear.
(03:39):
Even though I did win this race a couple of times in the past,
this might have been either my best or my second best time for
the race. I'd have to go back and look to
like 2021 when I some of the achievements said I ran faster
in some segments, so I'd have toactually go back and look.
(04:02):
But I definitely left some time out there.
I would say 30 seconds to a minute, the time out there
today, because I really didn't attack the hills as much as I
could or should have just because there was nobody right
on my ass or pushing me or I wasn't chasing anybody down.
So I did sort of, you know, easeup on the hills.
(04:25):
But then the downhills, I attacked it probably about the
best I could without redlining at all.
I didn't redline at all during the whole race.
Again, I felt like I was breathing good, my legs were
moving good, the form was great. So I really didn't have to
(04:47):
today. So that was awesome.
Let's start to finish. I didn't feel any pressure
today. I know there's like one teenager
that took off with me. I thought him like right on my
right shoulder for well, probably till the that first
(05:09):
left once we come out of like the Main Street from the school,
maybe another 20-30 yards after that.
But other than that, I didn't hear any footsteps, weren't
feeling any pressure behind me. There's a police car leading the
whole race. I knew the route, but they were
clearing away, so that was kind of nice, using them to draft off
(05:33):
a little bit. Yeah, Took off, tacked a little
incline before the diamond. People were out there cheering
and stuff. I know.
I remember seeing a penny on theground.
I was going to stop and pick it up or point it out to somebody,
but didn't want to lose my fluidity.
(05:53):
That was before the Crest of thehill.
I think it was by the Chinese restaurant.
It's where that penny was. Just a little side note.
Got to the dime and I was thinking in my head, I was like,
all right, now it's your time toturn it on a little bit here.
Use that free speed of the downhill gap, everybody behind
(06:13):
you right now. That way when you climb that
hill coming back, you can take it easy and pull back a little
bit just to save your legs in case somebody wants to try to
chase you down. And that seemed like it worked
out pretty good. I might have had 20 seconds, 30
seconds as I hewed around the turn around point.
(06:38):
Like as you go downhill on one side of the street, you make
like a 3040 yard left hand turn and you make another left and
you go up the hill. But sort of like AYI guess it,
it's basically like AY type Rd. So you're basically running up
the other side of the Y before it becomes a point again and
(07:00):
then you follow it out to the diamond.
But that's like the uphill. That's the hard part, because if
you're flying down the hill, youknow, you got to switch muscles
real quick as you hit the flat and then run up the hill.
Sometimes it's hard to do. It just makes you burn out
pretty quickly going up that hill because it's just, it's not
a horrible, horrible incline, but it's enough where it's going
(07:21):
to make you burn up, burn your legs out and breathe a lot
heavier in that tenth or two that you have to run out of it.
So that's why when the banks of time get ahead did look back
once I crested the hill, I didn't look behind me at all
beforehand. A couple of the guys I know said
(07:42):
that, yeah. I, I passed them the exact same
spot this year as I did last year as they were heading out.
As I was headed in, just one of those another side notes that
once we crested that big hill, hit that little flat section to
the diamond. I looked back and I was like,
all right, there's people still in your view.
(08:04):
Now it's time to bury a little bit.
So around the diamond, I hugged that diamond as tight as I
could, occurring myself for the downhill, that last little bit
of downhill. So once we got to the other side
of the diamond, we, you know, get past the wicked googly and I
knew I had probably about a minute or two of free speed that
(08:27):
I could use and pick up. So that's what I did, use that
to make the right hand turn to come in behind the school.
But I looked right before it. We turned to the right, but I
still had that 2030 seconds and I was like, all right, no
pressure. I was like just don't need
nothing stupid. We got this.
(08:47):
Just stay within yourself. You don't even have to burn off.
So that's what I did. Just kept going.
Then once we hit those couple blocks through town before we
turn the back Rd. to the school,I look back one last time.
I still had a nice gap and I waslike, all right, he got this and
it's a it's a uphill till we hitthe I don't know what do you
(09:12):
want to call it? Entrance to the school?
I was going to say driveway, butit's the entrance to the school.
It's a little bit of an incline and I know before I ended up
getting sick or coughing there. So I wanted to take it easier.
And that's what I did, pulled back some and they moved the
finish line a little bit fartherback this year because I was
confused When I came into the entrance to the school, I was
(09:33):
like, well, where the Hell's thestart line at?
But they moved it up a little bit.
So I came in there and 18 O seven could have broke 17 easily
today. I didn't need to, nor did I
really want to, but I could have.
I probably should have. I just wanted to win.
(09:55):
I really don't want to blow up and I didn't have the time go.
I just was going out to win today.
So that's why I didn't push a lot more than I could have.
Yeah, I don't, I don't know if it was wearing the door from
pros, the weather, whatever. Not training as much as here or
(10:17):
combination of it all, but definitely ran a pretty damn
good race today and very happy about it.
Took some clips afterwards, talked to my buddy Jack, some
other people. That's about it.
(10:40):
I just think overall it went pretty well today and I felt
good. So I was definitely happy about
that because since I took a couple off days this week, I'm a
little fat, probably about 3 lbsheavier than when I was a week
or two ago. But I think I needed the rest.
Need a nap now. You can see the yeah bags
(11:03):
underneath my eyes. I walked around four days, about
an hour. I'll be some food.
I got some kind of like an applecherry pie crumb cake on.
It was so good. I got it last year.
Then I got some. Yeah, as I said, food, pork,
fries to eat. So I don't know.
(11:28):
Good day. I think this is win number 11th
of the year win #12 I'll take it.
Well, other than that, it's niceto win three races in a row.
(11:49):
It's nice to know that I still have a lot left in me to give.
I know probably 30 seconds afterstopping I was ready to go
again. I could have ran another 5K
right after that so my enduranceis pretty good right now on my
(12:10):
legs and such. So is what it is and just
looking forward to next week.
