Now on to the show.
A Harvard Business study foundthat there's a direct
correlation between goal-settingand success.
It said that 14% of people whohave goals are 10 times more
successful than those who don't.
So today we're going to tacklethat.

(00:52):
I'm going to talk to you abouthow we set goals, how we plan
them out, and I'm going to getyou excited again about setting
goals.
And it's not January 1st, I'mactually recording this in
September, but that's the thing.
It doesn't matter.
When you set goals, you canhave a goal-planning session

(01:13):
anytime you want.
I'm going to share a newmindset around goals that I
learned that really pushed me toset big goals, and then I'm
also going to talk about how youcan create those goals.
Write them all out and create aplan around them.
But then I'm also going to askyou some questions that you can
answer so that you can feelmotivated and create urgency

(01:36):
around those goals.
So let's start with mindset.
So this idea really kind ofblew my mind, because it is the
idea that goals are not meant tobe reached.
They're meant to stretch you.
So basically, it's not aboutcreating quote-unquote
attainable goals, it's aboutbecoming the person that can

(02:00):
reach those goals.
So, in other words, it'sfocused on growth, not
necessarily the finish line.
Another one is you never wantto decrease your target.
You always want to increaseyour actions.
So, going back to setting thatgoal, you don't want to keep
changing the goal or loweringyour standard.

(02:22):
You want to increase yourperformance.
You want to increase theactions that you're taking so
that the goal always stays thesame.
It's just you again focusing ongrowth, becoming the person
that can achieve that goal.
And I think my favorite one isdon't set goals based on what

(02:43):
you have.
Set them based on what you want.
The mentality about settinggoals based on what you have
just keeps you in a box.
It doesn't let you envisionsomething bigger, it doesn't let
you think outside the box.
It kind of keeps you stuck.
So the idea that you set thembased on what you want gives you

(03:06):
more freedom to dream.
Okay, let's go into the actualgoal planning.
So you have your sheet and I'mactually going to provide you
with some templates on that.
So, if you listen to the end, Iwill give you the instructions
on how you can download adigital version of my planner so

(03:27):
that you can write out yourgoals, write out your plan and
have that all nice and pretty.
So, obviously, step number oneis write your goal.
Now you want to be as specificas possible.
You don't want to make it toovague, because it's going to be
really hard to plan it all out.
So be very specific.
And you also want to set a date.

(03:47):
You want to set a date that iscloser than you're comfortable
with, because that is going tocreate urgency.
Now I want to talk a little bitmore about urgency, because
this is going to be your fuel.
This is going to be the thingthat is going to push you to
create that big goal, but alsoto not procrastinate.

(04:11):
So urgency what that does is itcreates focus, because if you
don't have a lot of time to doit.
You need to be really focused.
Focus, then, breeds creativity.
You are going to have to comeup with many different ways,
thinking outside the box, on howyou can move towards your goals

(04:32):
.
You don't have a lot of time.
You have a lot of focus.
You have to get creative andthat's really exciting because
you are going to find differentopportunities, you are going to
find different paths and it'sgoing to create efficiency.
So I'm not quite done withwriting the goal.
We're still on like step one,but bear with me, it's worth it.

(04:55):
So you have your goal.
You set a date for when youwant to achieve that goal, but
you also want to write down whythis goal is important to you.
Why do you want to get there?
Why do you want to go throughall this trouble to get to that
specific goal?

(05:16):
So really think about this one, because this is going to be
your motivation.
It's going to be your NorthStar to get to where you want to
be.
Now I want to challenge you andyou may be thinking well, I
really don't know what goal Iwant.
I really don't know what I want.
So I want to give you aquestion that you can ask

(05:38):
yourself to help you with that.
So the question is, if youcould remove all obstacles,
barriers, pain and heartache, what would you want to achieve?
Now?
This puts you in a completelydifferent mindset.
There's no obstacles, there'smore room to dream.
There is kind of like thatvoice that keeps you from

(06:05):
achieving things or doing things, that those limiting beliefs.
You push those aside and thenyou just think about what is it
that you want, because there'snothing getting in your way.
Now you may be thinking okay,I've done this before.
I've had these really big goalsthat I've tried to work towards

(06:26):
and I get unmotivated or theyjust fizzle out, or I just get
overwhelmed.
So now we're going to go intothe actual planning.
How are you going to achievethis?
What are the steps that ittakes to get to that goal?
So the first thing you want todo is you want to break it up,

(06:47):
because when we start dreamingbig, we start getting creative,
we start pushing those limitingbeliefs aside.
We tend to set these goals thatwe don't feel are actually
realistic.
Now what that does is itcreates fear and it shuts us

(07:11):
down and it just paralyzes us.
But sometimes all you have todo is break it up into smaller
pieces, smaller, more digestiblepieces.
So the next step is to createprogress goals.
So you want to have threeprogress goals.

(07:32):
You want to make sure they'remeasurable.
So these are going to be yourmilestones.
So what are those threemilestones you need to achieve
so that you know you're going inthe right track or you're at
least staying on track?
So now we're going to go intospecific actions.
Now these are daily actions andthis is probably where people

(07:57):
fall off or they just don't doit, and then they wonder why
they don't reach their goalsbecause they're not working on
them every single day.
You have to work on it everysingle day and you don't have to
make huge progress.
That's why we're breaking itdown but you do have to do small
actions every single day sothat you can achieve that goal

(08:22):
or get close to it, and you canalso feel good that you're
moving and that you'reprogressing.
Now the way you create yourdaily actions or set these
smaller tasks are based on yourthree progress goals.
So you're going to go toprogress goal number one and

(08:44):
you're going to write down thethree actions that are based on
progress goal number one.
So those are the daily actionsyou're gonna take for that
particular progress goal, andthen you're going to do this for
a progress goal number two andprogress goal number three.
These are the most importanttasks that you're going to do
because you're going to do themevery day.

(09:05):
So the way you're going to makesure that you're doing them is
by tracking them.
So you're actually going tocreate a tracker based on these
actions.
So see how it's going.
It's just breaking it downfurther and further until there
are smaller actions that you'llbe able to do every day.

(09:26):
That's just going to compoundand create that bigger goal for
you, and you can use this forany goal that you have.
It could be absolutely any goal.
Actually, the templates thatI'm going to be providing, I
actually have that already setup.
So we have a general goal, soit could be anything at all.
And then I have finance, I havebusiness, I have family, health

(09:49):
, relationships, anything, because you can create a goal
that has to do with any area ofyour life.
So I'm going to give you anexample here so you can see how
this would look like in practice.
Let's say you want to create agoal around your family, so your
goal is spend at least threeweekends of the month with my

(10:11):
family.
So let's say, you want tocreate a greater connection with
your family, you want to spendmore time with your family and
you want to make this happen inthree months.
So in the template, there's aspace for you to write down why
this is important to you and itsays the end result of this goal
is very important to me toachieve because and maybe you
can write down my spouse andkids are the most important

(10:32):
humans on the planet and I wantto bond with them and not regret
not spending enough time withthem.
So this could look manydifferent ways.
So now we're going into the how.
How are you going to achievethis?
So you're going into theprogress goals and the actions
that you're going to take.
So maybe this is going torequire you to change positions
or change a shift, changecareers.

(10:53):
So it it's going to bedifferent for everybody, but
this is how this would look likeif you decided you were going
to change positions.
So your progress goals would beyou create a new work schedule
that will allow you to havethose weekends off, communicate
with your spouse.
The goal that you have tocreate a better support and

(11:16):
create a plan on what yourweekends would look like if you
had them off.
So now we're going to go intothe daily or smaller actions.
So, based on goal number one ofcreating a new schedule, maybe
that is looking for a newposition or a new shift.
So step number one is look fornew position or a shift.

(11:37):
Then maybe you want to updateyour resume and then make a list
of people who would providereferences for you.
So those three things arerelated to progress goal number
one.
So then progress goal numbertwo about communicating with
your spouse.
One step would be find time totalk to your spouse.
Maybe you would do this dailyor once or twice a week, so

(12:02):
creating that time.
And then you want to ask them, maybe for ideas on what you can
do.
You know two heads are betterthan one, so you want to
communicate with your spouse andmaybe ask them what ideas they
have.
Then maybe you also want to goover your finances.
Like what is that going to looklike if you change positions?
Maybe you have to go into aposition that pays you less.

(12:23):
So that's something, adiscussion, that you're going to
want to have.
So then, progress goal numberbased on progress goal number
three.
These are the steps.
So progress goal number threewas create a plan on what your
weekends would look like if youhad them off.
So maybe you want to talk toyour kids about your plan.
Maybe you want to list thethings you could do as a family,

(12:46):
maybe get them excited about itwhat can you do as a family and
then maybe create a fun trackerthat involves your kids, so
that way they can see thatyou're working on this goal that
involves them and they can alsokeep you accountable.
So that's it.
That's how you create a planfor your goal.
Like I said, you can create thisfor any area of your life.
If you have this template, it'ssimple.

(13:08):
It may take you just a fewminutes to get it done and it's
going to make a huge differencebecause you're actually going to
have those small steps to doand it's not going to feel so
overwhelming and so far fetched.
Now, of course, if you have amuch bigger goal, you can still
use this.
It's still a great template touse.

(13:29):
You may need to go into a littlebit more detail on the progress
goals and the actions, butthat's okay, because now you
just have this structure so thatyou can move towards your goals
.
I hope that was helpful.
I hope that you'll get excitednow to create some goals, and it
doesn't matter when it is inthe here.

(13:51):
You can create whatever goalsyou want and I hope that they
excite you and that you movetowards them.
