Glenn Mason said a long time agoat the University of Minnesota, you need
a Pair and a Spare. Yes, thank you, PJ. It is
that time another edition of the Pairand a Spare podcast. We're probably presented
by Jack's Cafe in Minneapolis, beenthere for ninety years. Jackscafe dot com,
Jaxcafe dot com. I'm justin guardfrom the fan. We've got Chipskogins
from the Star Tribune and Ryan Burnsfrom Gopher Illustrated dot com. And it's

(00:22):
Iowa week It's Floyd of Rosedale week. It was Las Vegas weekend for Burnsey.
It was Madison weekend for Chip.I did nothing. I stayed home
and just tried to get my bodyin mind right. You know, did
some self scouting on the bye weekguys, and I feel like I came
out pretty well. How was Iwas by weekend? For you? How
was your brownie points with the missus? I would imagine you went pumpkin farming

(00:42):
and apple tasting. You know whatwe actually did. What we did on
Saturday is I was sitting at mywhat was this? Which kids? Activity
was I at? Well? Iknow that you brought the initials championship trophy
everywhere. Yes, congrats, thankyou, winners, champ winners win,
Yeah, winners win. I haveall the traveling trophies that the fan has.

(01:03):
I mean, there's some college teamsthat are having trouble. Yeah,
we have one up front. Welost our Emmy, though the enough said
for a fifth straight year has lostthe Emmy. We lost to dine A
TV. Of all places, hedine A TV somehow knocked us out.
I'm still not sure how that happened. But oh but I texted my wife
and I just want this for therecord, like for our record, or

(01:26):
for the record for everybody, foreverybody's record, Like when I come in
here one time and I just say, you know, I gave it my
best shot at this marriage thing, guys, but it just didn't work out,
Like she finally got sick of me. I want this on the record
for everybody. I texted my wife. I must have been at hockey.
And you know, she during thesetimes has to do a lot because I'm

(01:46):
a non factor during the afternoon. She needs a break from the kids every
once in a while. And Isaid, I'm going to get a hotel
with some points. There's a reallycheap one in Prairie. I'm not telling
you where it is because I don'twant to ruin my bid here. Yeah,
you decide you go there tonight orI bring the kids there tonight,
but you just cannot deal with anyof us for you know, twelve hours

(02:07):
whatever it is. So that's whatI did. That was took him to
the hotel. That's a power moment. That's a very look at you went
to uh dad, what a husband? Went to Divaney's and edon Prairie,
went around the mall to get alittle cold Stone creamery, played some uh
played some board games in the room. Kids did the pool, did a
little bit of the pool. Wewatched some Oregon and Washington we'll talk about
that, and watched a little becausemy nine year old spavin and enjoy her.

(02:30):
I think she just hung out.I think she went to bed at
like seven thirty. I don't know. Just said do what you just do.
But I just want that on therecord. I have tried. I've
tried. Yeah, yeah, movie, I've tried. Boy. So that's
what I did. Wow, Idid not do that. He didn't do
that. No, you had asimilar emotional you know, my family test
and your tweet and everybody's talking aboutyour family. Hold on, you went

(02:53):
to Wisconsin, I went, Sowe're gonna we're gonna get to that in
a second. Where did you go? I went to Las Vegas? Is
that right? Yeah? I wentto Las Vegas with my wife and another
couple for a rescheduled trip from thespring. And let me tell you,
I got some thoughts and feelings aboutlike just the zoomers and how they try
to do Vegas compared to me inmy early thirties. Who are the Zoomers?

(03:15):
I would say, the kids whoare either still in college Okay,
I don't know if they were UNLVstudents that were always just running around bachelor
parties, bachelor atte parties. Ican tell you they all dressed the exact
same it's so old now, it'samazing. Zoom Oh my god. Here's
I can tell you. I sawprobably two hundred Zoomer guys, So guys

(03:36):
like twenty three years old. Theyall wear the exact same fing thing.
Yeah, I know, they're alla bunch of bros. It's it's a
backwards hat. It's way too farup on their forehead. That's way too
tight. It's a Macy's thirty fivedollars shirt. It's it's a pair of
slax. And then then they arejust the worst. Oh my god,
I just I cannot stress to youhow much I just wanted to go up

(03:58):
to them and be like, whatare we doing here, Fellas, Like
we get obliterated on some fat Tuesdays, which is just like a giant thing
of alcohol. Yeah, and thenwe're just degenerates and we go to like
the five dollars blackjack table and makewho they still have those? That's the
problem with Vegas. There's only twoof them. Yeah, they don't really
with that low of a buy in. Yeah, at least where I was
at the MGM grant right, like, oh boy, we're hooting and hollering

(04:21):
after five dollars blackjack. I justthese are your kids, now, Chipper,
I mean, this is what's wrongwith your kids. I mean,
tell tell Burnsy what My daughter wentthere. She went to Vegas last year
at the scene. I think it'sI think college kids around the country just
their senior trip. They just endit's a great place to go twenty one
day. Yeah, I mean it'sa great place to go at any point,
correct Vegas. You can find whateveryou want to do. If you're

(04:43):
still holding out a glimmer of hopethat they find a way to get to
the Vegas Bowl game. Now,a lot of things have to go right
for them in the next six weeksfor that to happen. Not that many.
They just I mean, the Bigten just places teams, they just
I mean they just I mean, yeah, they got to be bill eligible
first. But anyway, did youcome home with the money? You leave
it all there? No, Iactually do well. This is the best
of ever done in Vegas. I'lltell you. The roulette table was kind

(05:04):
of me and I was able tohit some and yeah, you're still mad
at the zoomers, right, Justthere's a lot of ways I could go
with this. I'm just gonna keepit strictly to the guys with with that
trip. But we had a lotof fun, a lot of rum runners.
Or I do have a picture thatI was. I have it on
my phone. I'm scared to tweetit or send it to you guys,

(05:27):
because I know it'll find social media. I had a thirty two ounce rum
runner by the pool. Oh thatsounds so gross. That would take me
a week and a half to getthrough. It took me about thirty minutes,
but I'll tell you it was probablyabout drink two dollars too, because
yeah, it was the sphere. The sphere is really cool. Like I
told both of you too. They'vegot a lot of construction going on through
Vegas because the F one Race, which looks like it's gonna be a ton

(05:48):
of fun. Yeah, four hundredmillion dollar project, four hundred million dollars.
They have the money there. Yougave them some of it. Yeah,
but we we had a bunch offun. I don't know that we
had as much fun as what Chiphad sitting through that Iowa Wisconsin game.
But which color were you in thestripe out? Were you right or right?
You got to wear red? That'sexciting. Yeah, that's really exciting.

(06:10):
Did everyone at Wisconsin complain that theyhad to wear a certain color or
did they just do it because that'swhat you do. It wasn't as it
didn't look that great on twenty bythe way, there weren't executed as well
as it should have been. Theymailed it in a little bit. I
thought, well, you know what'sfunny is there was a great vibe coming
in the stadium and I've never seen, so, you know, rarely do
I get to sit out in thestands as a spectator, so it's it's

(06:32):
hard to You don't have a wholelot of basis on this, but I've
never seen a team take their owncrowd out of the game Wisconsin. And
I'm not kidding. And you've satthrough a lot of go for football games
and five straight three and ounce inthe first half. Yeah right, I
mean the crowd just went. Itwas matched only by Iowa having three yards

(06:53):
in a span of six drives twelvethree yards twelve punts in the first half.
Yeah, Tory Taylor, Baby,I don't think I've ever seen a
more boring game in my life thanthat one. And that's a bit I
feel like people don't understand how bigof a statement that actually is a football
in your life. It was justthe crowd was just sitting there and it

(07:14):
was it was great to hear someof the uh comments shots at air raid.
Yeah, oh really, they're notfeeling it. The Barry Alvarez fans
aren't loving the air raid. No. It Neither one of those teams looked
like they had any clue how torun an offense. It's funny. My

(07:38):
wife that made a comment at onepoint she said, I would just kind
of wait for you to make amistake. Huh. I'm like, yes,
that's in the three years or how, that's the kirk Way. And
they're terrible. I'm sorry, thoseoffenses are terrible. And we can say
I think both of those defenses aregood, but lets not pretend. And

(08:00):
this is like the Albama and Georgiadefenses that we see in last decade.
They're they're they're good. Yeah,I wouldn't say they're special. I just
think the offenses are so god awfulthat they make him look better than what
they are. Well, you knowwho we don't talk about enough is Sebastian
Castro, this dude from Iowa.Like we I I'm pleading ignorance, like

(08:20):
I've obviously assume, Okay, CooperDejean is this guy. And they've had
Jack Campbell and they've had all thesedudes like who's this dude? Yeah,
Like any every time there needed tobe a play besides the first the fourth
down, the first fourth down, leaving as you would say, Burnsy,
leaving Cooper dejen unblocked is a choice. It is a choice on your first
fourth and one because he gets themoff the field there after maybe Wisconsin's best

(08:41):
drive of the game that that openingdrive. But this Castro dude, it's
like he he reminds me, isit stupid to say? He kind of
reminds me of like a Blake Cashman, Like he's just kind of like all
over the place. Like whenever youneed like a TfL or you need something,
like, he's just there. Iliked about twenty tackle. I don't
know that's but it was crazy. He's been really good for them. I
remember Minnesota recruiting him back in highschool and he ultimately chose Iowa and kind

(09:07):
of that safety linebacker tween her bodyand they didn't really know one way or
another decides to go to Iowa. And now he's played sparingly through the first
few years. But this year hehas been tremendous for them. Unbelievable.
Yeah, Like every it seemed likeevery time something needed to happen for them,
like me, And there was alot of weird stuff like there was
the fumble that wasn't by Braylan Allen, who again this we'll talk about the

(09:28):
Minnesota approach, but it's like doyou think you're just going to hand it
off to somebody for thirty times oneperson and he's gonna come out of this
game unscathed with how Iowa Iowa likesto hit you, I mean, Brayln.
It was weird. They didn't runearly in the first half. They
just threw it all the time. And I don't know if they just felt
like, Okay, we have todo that because we're not gonna be able
to just line up and run againstIowa. Stretch it a little bit,
like the quarterback is not good.I mean, you are not a more

(09:52):
guy. He's not well. Nowyou probably aren't gonna have to see him
for actually the rest of the yearbecause of that hand injury. Had surgery
on and I didn't get it.They didn't show it the replay. I
was I just saw them fall.I didn't his hand hit the helmet the
follow through. Yeah, And heessentially said I can't grip the football,
which is an issue. Yeah,as a quarterback you need to grip the
football. But alan started to getsome stuff going there in the second half.

(10:16):
Yep. Yeah, they finally committedto the run a little bit.
Change quarterbacks and they found a littlesuccess. It was weird. It's like
they waited so long on it,and but it was just I mean,
just three and out after three andout and you're sitting there like this is
so boring. Let me give youthe the drive summaries here. Both teams
turned it over on downs to startthe game. You mentioned the opening scripts,

(10:39):
I mean, Phil and Brian Farrens. I'm telling tos to you on
the opening script, telling you here'swhat I love though. At least Wisconsin
eleven plays, eighty one yards. The hot guys went twelve plays, forty
eight yards in five minutes. Thatessentially ends the first quarter because that went
about eleven minutes. Was Scott threeand out punt, Iowa three and out

(11:01):
punt, Wisconsin three and out puntIowa three plays, touchdown. That was
an eighty two yard ye bye. We're gonna talk about their running backs.
They've got two nice and Caleb Williamsa week ago had a sixty seven yard
er, so they've got some nice. They've got some dudes there. Wisconsin
answers was a three play, threeand out punt Wisconsin or excuse me,

(11:22):
Iowa three plays minus four yards puntWisconsin three plays nine yards punt. Iowa.
Three plays minus two yards punt.Wisconsin. Five plays one for the
thumb twenty five yards, but apunt the hot guys. Three plays two
yards punt. Wisconsin. Three playsseven yards punt Iowa. I'm not making

(11:43):
this up. I'm not at halftimeyet. Three plays seven yards punt,
Iowa. Three plays two yards punt, and then that was the end of
the half. The Badgers only rantwo plays because that's all they had time
for in ten minutes. Let mejust real quick give you the counterpoint to
this. Future Big Ten opponents Oregonand Washington. Their first half punt punt,

(12:07):
touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, field goal, interception
downs. That was the first half. Their second half punt touchdown. It's
there's some sporadics in there, butthirty six thirty three was the final there.
Yeah, sorry to boor everybody, but that was just too good.
That's that's what it was. Imean, magic sitting in. You have
this crowd that's repped up and youhave to come watch that the stripe out
to watch Tory Taylor take over thegame. And he's I mean, he

(12:31):
bombed him. He flipped it.Every time. Is he a senior?
Finally, I mean he's like twentyeight years Yeah, it did see he's
fifty yards on ten punts. Thatright, he's draft eligible, which if
I was him and I'm his age, I'm gonna go collect money in the
NFL. I don't know Casey's marketor high ve might give him a couple
of mill to stick around. He'sthe most popular player they have winning.
I've seen the t shirts Iowas swarmbecause of where our seats were. The

(12:54):
Iowa one of the Iowa sections wasup above us. They love that punter.
Well, how can they not? It's unbelievable. Yeah, they've embraced
the approach. You know who alsoloves that punter. It's PJ. Fleck
because I heard him wax poetically Iwould say about Iowa special teams yesterday,
which is ironic. But yeah,I mean, apparently Tory Taylor and Mark

(13:18):
Crawford are from the same class, really good buddies, really from both from
Australia. Ten punts for Tory Taylor. Ten? How mean? In it
was like a fifty average, wasn'tit? Like I said, I think
that I looked it up. Ibelieve a halftime. The teams combined for
twelve punts in the first half.Yeah, I've got I just read.
I mean, it took me likea minute and a half to read through
the first half summary and they couldnot neither team both teams. I was

(13:45):
four to seventeen on third down.Wisconsin was two of seventeen, six of
thirty four on third downe third downs. I won a game with thirty seven
yards passing. Well, how manytimes? What were the numbers for our
quarterback here, Deacon Hill? Letme get the passing number, six of
fourteen thirty seven yards average two pointsix yards to carry a QBR of six

(14:07):
point two. Let me clean upthe Tory Taylor line. Ten punts for
five hundred and six yards fifty pointsix average sixty two yard? Or was
the long? I think it's likehow many inside the twenty six burns?
How many touches? How many touchbacks? Zero? Guy's good weapon, He's

(14:28):
a weapon. I mean I wouldn'tthrow the ball either. I would just
punt and punt and punt until makea mistake. As Chip watched live and
as Flex said yesterday, that's thething about Iowa was they can go three
and out from their own twenty fiveand then Tory Taylor can pin you back
inside the twenty and you think you'regonna get the field position and you're not.
They would do that. I meanyou could tell like it is a

(14:48):
strategy. Yes, they would countthis guy to flip field position and then
go down there and play defense andwait till you make a mistake, and
they just keep playing that field positionuntil you get better. You know,
it's it's unble until they finally canget a first down and then getting within
field goal range and then kicking runningback to one run was I mean,
it was nice. I think theirtailbacks cut back and I think they're very

(15:09):
good. Yeah, and I knowone of them. Was it Williams that
has been injured that just came backhere recently or was that Johnson either one
yard? Yes, yeah, yeah, and he's nice. It was a
nice play, yeah, And theykept running like basically inside brock Hewart kept
talking about the left side of theHawkeye offensive line from center to the left.
So they're just running by these guysand you get through a couple of

(15:31):
run blitzes and there you go.And that was That's what I think the
only real shot, they took downthe fields. They started a second half
with a deep shot that fell wofullof think and you didn't feel it,
didn't you weren't inspired? That wasit. Seventy six two hundred and five
got to watch that one. Yeahit's a good eighty eighty eighty capacity,
but seventy six thousand got to watchit. There. So, anything else

(15:52):
from Iowa Wisconsin Chipper that you feellike we need to talk about, I
was in the driver's seat firmly unlessthey implode in November. Now, even
if Minnesota wins this weekend because oftheir schedule, but you just watch that
team and you're like, they're sixand one. This team is it's it's
maddening to think that you can beI looked it up yesterday. Total offense.

(16:19):
They are dead last in FBS onehundred and thirty three out one hundred
and thirty three that a team isgoing to finish dead last in total offense.
Can win a division in a Powerfive conference when you have Phil Parker
and when you have LeVar Woods, you can just carry the rest of them.
Tory Taylor return man to think abouthow that would if they had Mark

(16:44):
Crawford instead of Tory Taylor. Howmuch would this I mean, you'd be
losing fifteen yards of field position everypunt compared to Tory Taylor. And am
I wrong on their defense? Like, I think they're good, but I
don't think it's like the best Iowadefense that we've seen. I don't think
they're No. They've got dudes, and you run the ball on them a
little bit. It looked like itlooks to me like it almost feels like
they send pressure more than they usuallydo because they know they're not getting enough

(17:07):
pressure up front. Yeah, theyused to it like ajp ands Yashanzi Polston,
and like it felt like now thatalso could have been like we just
want to heat these qbs up becausethey're no good. Yeah, and they're
gonna throw us one. But itfelt like it didn't feel as basic as
it usually does. Maybe because they'renot getting the turnovers like they did.
You know, like they had alot of turnovers to start the year.
They haven't as of late, whichWisconsin fubble a couple times, right,

(17:32):
they're late. Uh yeah, it'sit's uh. But now you look forward
to the game this weekend. Ithink right now it is currently the third
lowest lowest total in college football historyat like thirty one. Iowa has the
first two, right, or acouple of them. Well, you know
the number one lowest game total incollege football history is it was last year's

(17:55):
game in Minnesota and it hit theunder. So the question is going to
be does it does the line endup going further than that into the twenties
for temperature? It hit the undertwo. Yeah, we said we said
this last week or before he didit, but I'll say it again.
If not now, then win tobeat Iowa to beat seriously, if not
now, then win. So I'llgo down there. This team is not

(18:17):
that good. I will opened asa five and a half point favorite.
As I looked this morning before comingin, I was now down to three
or three and a half. That'swhat I heard on our morning show.
So it's essentially a pick them,which I mean, there's it's been a
house of horror. Yeah, wellno matter where they've played. I mean
the house of hors last year wasat home, where you completely dominate a

(18:37):
game and you think you're gonna winit with five minutes left. You think
you're gonna win it with two minutesleft, and you somehow don't win it.
Like, I just don't know ifthere's a lot to say about it
anymore, except like like you said, Chip, it just at some point
you just got to go rise upand win this game. Yeah, because
it's not like this is the Gophersplay in Ohio State, where we're like,
okay, every game they're probably gonnalose or Michigan or Michigan. Yeah,

(19:00):
Like, I haven't sat there Saturdayand watched that offense. You're really
yeah, you're you are shook, you are damage. I have PTSD from
watching those from watching those two offenses, just three and out in punt all
day long. It's like, yeah, you're from looking up at punts because

(19:21):
I was high up, like whatare we doing here? So I'll remind
people I was offense. Why isit so bad? Well, they got
their backup quarterback in who was Wisconsin'sthird string last year in Deacon Hill.
They're now without their top two tightends because Luke lach is out and then
Eric All the Michigan transfer, theonly guy catch a pass. Yeh,

(19:42):
he got injured in the Wisconsin game. It sounds like he's out for the
year. He threw him right intothat get submarine. They finally got the
receiver reception they were to throw toreceivers. I think they have like twenty
two receptions with the receivers all year. Yeah, they're tight End three is
a kid by the same of thinglike Addison Ostranga. He's not even listed

(20:03):
on the depth chart this week becausehe's injured. And so you're thinking yourself,
I go back to twenty one whenit was Charlie Jones, I think
beat while on a double move andthen yeah, yep with backup quarterback.
Do you think about last year?Ye? Then last year it was the
Iowa tight ends killed them. Theyhad six first downs receptions between Lasha and

(20:26):
Laporta. Lache ain't here, Laportaain't here, Eric All ain't here.
They're tight End three, ain't here. You've Deacon Hill like, if you
can't stop the run, you're justnot gonna win. But my god,
this should be the previoum speech. This should be the hype video like that
gober Sports puts out. And it'sjust like, as they're getting ready for

(20:47):
me, screaming into the if notthat should be if not not. But
you're right, I mean, it'sjust but I'll say, as I watched
Iowa Wisconsin like a week ago,I was like kind of with you,
I'm like, if not not win, But then I watch it, I'm
like, but the same Iowa stuffis happening. Like they're just they're not
beating themselves. They're running the balljust enough, they're getting enough play,

(21:08):
and then they don't care, likethey they they literally don't care, and
they have twenty five years of experience. Certainly in the last like five of
like we're just shutting it down andit's over. Like we're not gonna let
you beat us. If we haveto try to score a game, we
will, but if we're perfectly happypunting our way to victory and walking off
with the Heartland Trophy again, likeit just it always seems like like even

(21:29):
like the fumble that wasn't by BraylonAlis, Like how do you fumble there?
Yeah, like it's your last drive, you're the best player, Like
I know Castro comes flying out ofnowhere, but like, hold on to
the ball, dude. Like thatstuff just happens for I especially when it's
supposed to be a top three rounddraft pick coming up here. You So
that's where I just I I havea much worse feeling about the golfers chances

(21:51):
than I did a week ago. After watching that whole thing unfold. I
don't, I don't. I mean, you are so down on both of
those programs. You couldn't I startto watch it and not feel that way.
Like eventually, how much for ticketsfor that game? How much did
you have? I think we paidabout one hundred to each. Yeah,
it seems like it was worth it. So like it feels like it is

(22:11):
set to you. Yeah, Iget it. So like ten dollars a
punt, Yeah, basically a littlebit right around. Let's just round it,
you know, eight to ten dollarsa punt. I keep waiting for
the Gophers to play a complete game, complete game. Fleck talked about it
yesterday, Like where the quarterback makesplays like we saw last year against Wisconsin,

(22:36):
and the defense plays more like aJoe Rossie defense where you don't give
up the big plays, the backbreakers. Right, Maybe this team doesn't have
it in them, but I keepthinking, there is this game coming where
they play a complete game. Well, it's again, Fleck talked about it
yesterday. We're just trying to figureout in the bye week, how did
they actually play a full sixty minutesoffense defense of special teams because they haven't

(22:56):
done it now. Are they goingto do it in the House of Horrors
this weekend? Probably not, Butyou'd like to hope that there's a chance
that they can have the quarterbacks settledown a little bit not be incredibly jittery,
which the two rank games he's playedin this year has been incredibly jittery.
Yeah, so you would think thatthe defense should give up big play

(23:18):
though. That's it, You gotit, PJ. I saw it talked
about yesterday, like, there's twothings that have hurt them against Iowa.
The first script, as you said, you know, I mean, I
go back to nineteen. They're downtwenty to zero in an instant ye and
then they're chasing the whole game. And that was obviously a great team of
a great defense, And there werequestions about Iowa's offense back then. In
twenty nineteen, this isn't a newproblem, and they went right down the

(23:41):
field a couple of different times andput the Gophers in a huge hole.
I mean, if the Gophers winthat game, they go to the Rose
Bowl that year, they win theWest and they go to the Rose Bowl.
That was the game that year, and obviously they could have beaten Wisconsin
and the same thing would have happened. But those scripts and then they have
something in their pocket, whether it'sa screen pass at the wrong time or
a play action pass late which wasa year ago, that gets you into

(24:03):
field goal range to walk off likethey've always got like one little trick,
which is I don't remember anybody havingthat on Joe Rossi as much as these
guys have right where it's it's happenednow a couple of different times where they've
just been able to out execute, out scheme, out fox whatever you want
to call it. Well, that'swhat I said yesterday defensively, is they

(24:23):
have to their motto this week hasbeen break the boring because Iowa runs the
same play over and over and overand over again. But it's the one
time where you get lazy and youget Dries in the wrong spot. Yeah,
they'll hit you with play action, they'll hit you with a screen pass,
and they flip the field and youcan't have it flip the field.
Yeah, yeah, I mean itcan. It can definitely low you to
sleep. I've never seen I've neverseen so much set, such a lover

(24:48):
of college football. The reason wehave this podcast. He's just questioning his
life right now that you sat along probably because it was cold up there,
and was it? Yeah, upperdeck, Yeah, you're used to
the nice amenity. He's that beautifulCamp Randall press box. Yeah. Well,

of my job. I haven't hadI haven't had a happy hour since two
thousand and eight. You're more abrunch guys. I'm a brunch guy.

(27:02):
your holiday dining reservations to I'm surepretty quickly we'll be talking about brunch with
Santa. Maybe my kids will earnthat this year. Stay tuned to the
pod to find out. We'll findout if that actually happens. Jaxcafe dot
com. All right, anything elseBig ten related we need to talk about
before we talk about Oregon and Washington. Anything Big ten related. I know

(27:23):
you were in Vegas living your bestlife, Berdie, so you weren't exactly
dialed in. Well, I sawIllinois beat Maryland. But it just feels
like to me, I know we'renot Big ten East podcast guys, but
how many straight years is it now? Mike Loxley gets that team hummin in
September and then you get into thedepths of the schedule in October, November,
and that team just starts to fallapart. Yeah, Illinois's got no

(27:44):
business winning that game in my mindagainst a team like Illinois, especially where
Illinois was late. It was thatcoming Maryland. It was at Maryland.
Yeah, twenty seven, twenty four, forty three yard field goal at the
buzzer. Yeah, I mean that'sthat was a that was a Yeah,
that's a surprise. I thought PricklaryWay Maryland, at least for the first
half or a little bit in asecond half, put up a fight against

(28:07):
Ohio State. You thought. Italso just felt like a big injury week
in the Big ten more or less. I mean you had mid October now,
yeah, well you had both quarterWell you got Iowa already on their
backup quarterback Tanner Mordecai is now probablyout for the year with a hand injury.
Brylon Allen got banged up again inthat game. You see in Michigan
State starting a new quarterback. Yousee, Illinois running backs are starting to
go down with injuries themselves. Imean it's it's starting to get a little

(28:32):
bit more difficult. And that's whereyou're hoping for Minnesota off the to buy
that you're able to get Darius Taylorback, You're hopefully able to get Cody
Lenenberg back. And what do youthink? I think both play this weekend?
You do. I don't know whatpercent they are, but I think
both play this week I would agreewith you on Darius. The Cody thing,
I just I'll believe it when Isee it. It's kind of like
the Iowa in Iowa, Like yougot to see him out there because we

(28:56):
thought he was going to play inNorth Carolina. That was a long time
ago, and then the set backhappened, which Fleck refuses to do it.
I mean, it got just comeout. Yeah, his this is
his camp, randalls right here, what what you've been processing here? This
is now his deal? Like hethinks it's all coy before that, you

(29:17):
know, because we ask him.You guys are there, We asked him.
You know. That's where Greeter triedto get a little bit tricky and
say, hey, are are Dariusand Cody planning on practicing tomorrow and Flecks
like, well, we hope everybody'splanning on practicing tomorrow, but you find
out to that man and injuries.I just he's not alone. I know
he's not alone. He's not alone. It just is what it is.

(29:40):
Like it's maddening for everybody. Itis what it is. He's not gonna
be like Kevin O'Connell, who youknow, tells you everything and then I'll
keep you guys posted, I'll textyou later essentially, although we'll see maybe
Kevin titens up now that his team'syou know, kind of struggling a little
bit. And going back quickly toto Darius Taylor what I mentioned before,
like whether he he's back or not. Let's say he's back, and it'd

(30:03):
be nice to mix in everybody.Yeah, it would be twenty carries and
give Zach Evans ten to twelve.I mean kind of like they did with
Bucky and Kai a couple of yearsago. Down there. They ran the
ball really well and just give peoplegive them a different look. Don't let
Iowa get comfortable with what you're tryingto do. Be off ballance, go
off schedule for your stuff a littlebit. I think Dak Evans has earned
it. I think he heard too. And that's the most important agree within

(30:23):
that statement is like the assumption ofrational coaching, whether it's in the NFL
or in college football, is somethingthat we try to make all the time.
Well, it's not usually coming tofruition, but in this case,
I think Zach Evans has earned thoseopportunities that if and when Darius is back
this weekend, twenty carries for Darius, double digit for Zach Evans and give

(30:45):
him a different look. To yourpoint, yeah, I mean they don't
let them get dialed in. Yes, exactly exactly, because Brailan was banged
up a couple of times. Yeah, and he's been back, he came
banged up. He may have alwaysbanged up. That's the thing, because
they give him so how many freakingcarries exactly right, Exactly what we lose
went down is like, yeah, you got a quarterback for the next five

(31:06):
games before you come play in Minnesota, and so it's like he's not going
to get under twenty five carries. The kid was the one that transferred from
who the quarterback that came in forWisconsin was that Mississippi State Brandon Locke might
be. Yeah, he was aportal transfer, yeah, correct, correct,
Yeah. Their top three quarterbacks areall Yeah. You know, I

(31:27):
want to see if both Taylor andEvans are in there the distribution of but
it to me, I don't sayyou have to be fifty fifty, but
it'd be awesome if it was sixtyforty, you know. Yeah. And
by the way, there's plays tobe made in the passing game against these
hot guys like they at some pointwe talked about it just has to happen,

(31:49):
like you can't. Why did NebraskaNebraska of twenty twenty two on Black
Friday a year ago keep Iowa outof the Big Ten championship? They said,
screw it, we're throwing it,and you know we're not throwing it
within eight yards of the line ofscrimmage, so you can have five guys
be there when it inevitably gets tipped, so they can house it. We're
going deep and we're taking some shotsand then you're gonna have to come get

(32:13):
us, as opposed to chase exactly. I don't remember a time where they've
really had to chase and go first. That's the thing you know Nathan has
had a tough year, no doubtabout it. But I keep, you
know, maybe I'm stuck on thatWisconsin game of last year. I keep
waiting to see that quest he's capableof Nebraska from a year ago, Nebraska
in the shadow of his own endzone. He throws the midfield on a

(32:36):
nice double move from Daniel Jackson,Like, where's that sound? Wasn't a
fluke? You don't? You know? Correct that that quarterback is there,
The skill sets there. I don'tknow if it's his confidence got rattled or
whatever it is, but I keepwaiting to see that, and maybe this
is the week we see that quarterbackemerging again. I will say the number
one thing if they're if we're goingto come back next week and they won
the game, they have to finishdrives. I go back to twenty one.

(32:59):
They kicked three field goals within theIowa fifteen yard line. You know
what doesn't beat Iowa field goals? You look at last year three drives within
the Iowa thirty five that didn't resultin a single point. How do you
lose to Iowan there? Because youdon't finish drives. You gotta be scoring
touchdowns, which I know is verydifficult to do against an Iowa defense,
but you gotta get more than threepoints. And that's the thing. If

(33:22):
you do that and you make Iowachase, they're not equipped to do that.
They're not built the well. I'dlike to see him try it right.
I'd like to have to have themtry it correct. And that's where
you need right to show up aboutthat in the first twenty minutes of the
game, because Brian Ferrens has hadhis number. Like the first play last
year, to your point, theSam Laport a screen that goes for fifty
yards, that was a nice play. Yeah, I mean good for I'm

(33:44):
telling you good. Parent's opening scriptsand then the rest of the game are
such anomalies, and it's it's mindboggling at times because they want to punt.
They have the lead. They don'tneed to do anything else. They're
ahead. They can punt all day. And here's the other reason why you
need to just get this done. We've talked about all the back to nineteen
ninety nine. It's the first timethat won there twice in forty years.
I got a text from what myIowa cousin yesterday and I told her I

(34:07):
said, not now, Christina, not now that Lisa Bluter has more wins
in Kinnick than Yea, than PJ. Fleck does, than Scott Frost does
that Matt Campbell, like all theseguys might I'm not ready for this.
Okay, it's like Monday night.By the way, if the Gophers win,
I am absolutely congratulating coach Fleck fortying Lisa Bluter for a wins in

(34:29):
Kinnick. I mean, it's toogood of a line not to If they
lose, I'm not going to bringit up. But if they win,
that's a good time to do it. But here so all of that,
but you got to get the pigbecause Iowa was winning the West. Like
it's over in my opinion, evenif Minnesota wins on Saturday, FPI's got
Iowa with a seventy six percent chancethe next post. This is Wisconsin at

(34:50):
seventeen. Minnesota is at one pointeight. And why do I say that
Because after they played the Golphers, they're six and one right now. Their
only losses to Penn State they playedNorthwestern at Wrigley. That will be Kinnick.
Whatever direction that is north, northwest, northeast. That will be
Kinnick Northwest. They've got Rutgers atKinnick, They've got Illinois at Kinnick,
and then they go to Nebraska. They're going to win the West. So

(35:15):
you have to lose two more andthe Gophers would have to only lose one
more, which would be the Ohiostate and we have to run the table.
So they're like, take the Minnesotapart out of it, just Iowa
in general. When we talked aboutit at the time, and I remember,
I remember that I didn't tweet aboutthis on Saturday, so I was
trying to be responsible. But Ijust remember the text we got when we

(35:35):
were talking about the West here andon the fan, and it was from
Wisconsin fans essentially like are you outof your mind? Blah blah blah.
We did that podcast, We didthis podcast live on Cave Fan, That's
what it was. Yeah, andthen that's all agreed. I should be
the favorite. You remember the textI was reading that day. Yeah,
I think they were Lakeville people.Yeah, they were all Lakeville North Panthers.

(35:57):
Yeah, that's right. Or Woodburythey well, they were at the
pizza ranch looked up, Yeah, exactly. But that's why it's like you
got to have something to hang yourhat on this season because the West,
because of the Northwestern thing, whichis unfortunate, because it was a bad
twenty minutes. Like it's just abad twenty minutes. You did for the
first forty five of the game. You did essentially everything. You're up thirty
one ten like that game's over. You should not lose that game, but

(36:21):
you did. So that's unfortunate becausethat has put you in a tricky spot.
So you got to have something tohang your hat on this season.
And the last couple of years it'sbeen beating Wisconsin, which you can still
do. And I'm not saying peopleare tired of beating Wisconsin, because I
know PJ and others like to saythat, like I remember when I got
here to beat Wisconsin, we'd begood. Yeah, well there's Iowa too,
like that, and I would keepspinning the West and you keep having

(36:44):
them on the ropes, and thiswould be a great time to do that.
Bring the pig back. You're bustingdown there, have it at the
facility at midnight. Everybody'll be hammered. It'll be great, and then then
people will just feel better about thefact that Iowa was probably going to indian
in the final year the Big TenWest yours. Yeah, I mean that
schedule is I told you the schedule, right. I mean, Minnesota's had

(37:05):
their shots the last two years withthat type of schedule, and they screwed
up in a game like just likethey did was one game. I was
going to be favoring every game hereon out, correct. Oh yeah,
yes, yep, unless Cooper Degeneand Sebastian Castro. Yeah, run into
each other trying to make an innerteam might go eleven and one. Think
about it, and you got tosee him. How lucky do you feel?

(37:25):
How can you confay it's not evendisappointed? Father? It's I came
outside and my son's got two tigersWashington at the airport when they arrive at
the Big Ten. I was aboutto say the mission, what do you
think the line would be in thatIndianapolis game, because it will be Michigan
against Iowa. Michigan minus twenty nineand a half. I was going to
say thirty, yeah, because PennState had already won thirty one nothing in

(37:46):
that game. Well, like PJsaid, they were in ninety one plays
and only scored thirty one points. It's hard to do. That is very
hard to do. We had totravel long fields. Yeah, Washington and
Oregon lived up to the hype.Did you see much of it? You
were in you we were watching thesame time we were watching it. Yeah,
that's on our phone. God,I missed Bucky Irving. He'd be

(38:07):
nice to have. Well, he'sdrink for Darius. Drink for Darius on
athletes dot com. So he justsigned with the i f A Blake Bears.
Oh did he really? Yeah?So he's got eighthan. Now he's
got Darius Taylor. Yeah, there'syesterday. Yeah, you guys are breaking
news on the pot Well it wasannounced yesterday. Yeah, I know,
I know. But that good? Was that game as good as it looked

(38:28):
on the Pinnix was great? Yeah. I mean here's the thing that's probably
Heisman front runner potentially right now, right now. I mean it's not like
we're breaking any news speaking of breakingnews, but like if you have a
dude at quarterback in college, wellthat's it. That's the fast those two,
these two teams for next year.Bon Nix isn't going to be there,
Either's Michael Pinnox are both going togo to the NFL. I mean,

(38:51):
or even USC. They're not gonnahave Caleb Williams. Now they're still
USC. I'm guessing they'll find aguy from modern day or they'll just go
shopping in the poll. That's it. I mean, all these big all
these big brands, like I meanPinox was a transfer. I mean Tom
Allen remember him in Indiana for years? Yes, in the COVID year.
I mean Tom Allen's made fifty millionbucks because of that. Dude. Yeah,
like no joke. Yeah, Imean there, he's probably gonna get

(39:12):
fired, if not this year, next year. But when he had Michael
Pinnox. How many first round quarterbackscome out of the Pac twelve this year?
Caleb Williams. Yeah, maybe SandersColorado quarterbacks should Yeah, yeah,
you mean Bo Nicks? Nicks probablyis he a first rounder? Pix?
I don't know. Yeah, Imean there's you got Drake May who's continuing
to play really really well. Yeah, it's a good year to be hopefully

(39:35):
this is a good year of quarterbacksfootball in college football, and we have
no idea how they're going to translateto the college football. Yeah. Absolutely,
it's an outstanding You got a lotof I mean That's where I was
looking at, like the Heisman odsbefore I came in here. And it
sucks that Brock Bauers is now outfor the other Georgia tight end. But
they're all quarterbacks the top ten, like remember the days of running backs.

(39:55):
Yeah, and he had some receiver. We've been jumping in with Will Anderson
in at Alabama, like we've goneto Smith Wanted a couple of years.
I guess all the finals are gonnabe quarterbacks in New York. Yeah,
yes, I think you're probably right. But it was fun to see this
game. I thought live up tothe hype. Oregon misses a field goal
essentially at the buzzer, everybody youknow rushes the field. It's thirty six,

(40:15):
thirty three, and Pinnix makes ayou know, a great play.
The couple a really nice place togive them the resliver. The Rome kid
is tremendous too. Yeah, Imean he made a couple of great dun
Yes, he is tremendous. Iwas reading the accounts though, on the
game management decisions and the like.I know he's a yep. I'm all

(40:37):
for being aggressive, but sometimes youjust have to play the odds right.
Fourth and three at the Washington fortyseven, two eleven left. He goes
for it incomplete pass. Understand thatthe philosophy is like, Okay, we
can end Pinis. Yep, youdon't. I don't give this guy at
the ball. Well, it wasn'tit the red zone opportunities where he could
have taken in the first half, right the first half, he could have
taken a field goal. Yeah, but I understand, like I do not

(40:59):
want Pinnis have the ball in hishands with a chance to win it.
But weren't they at a timehouse.Don't you kick it and make him go
eighty ninety yards to win it?And you're essentially, like you said,
you're at midfield and you're giving him. So I agree, I would have
punted it. I would have puntedit there because it was two plays.
I mean, he throws a thirtyfive yarder down to the Oregon eighteen,

(41:21):
and then the next play it's atouchdown. Because I think too sometimes your
defense is over there, then allof a sudden they're out there like they're
watching hey fourth, because it wasa ten play drive before that. I
just have the play by play.Oregon's just moving the ball down the field.
And you know, very slowly pickingup first downs and churning clock and
all of that. Your defense isjust standing over there and then all of
a sudden, oh you don't getit. Place goes crazy. Now you're
out here and now Peniss like touchedon your behind. It's over like that.

(41:45):
That's where it gets tough. ButI'm a big landing guy, though,
Like, yeah, I know, what's your guy? After the Yeah,
he's like my Jim Leonard. Okay, well after the don thing.
But even have we talked about yourlove for landing? Yeah, because his
response to the d on right, yeah we played ye, yeah, coach
has gone wild segment. But Ieven like just how he came back and

(42:05):
said, hey, look that's ayou can criticize me. I get like,
I'm a big boy. That's goingto be part of the deal.
Like at that point, I believein my guys. This is what I
was thinking. Like, Now,if it happens a couple of more times
and he starts getting chippier about it, which they all do at some point,
we know, then maybe I'll beannoyed by him. But I just
like his vibe. I just likehis I don't know, I like all
of it, right, I mean, I give him credit for saying this

(42:29):
is how I coach. Yeah, sometimes it's gonna work sometimes, and I
can handle the critism when it doesit. I mean, you're on the
road. I put a lot intoit, I'm sure. Yeah, yeah,
right, Like, and I said, we talk about these things all
week. It's not like I justdecided this then, like we're thinking about
it the whole time. And Iget and sometimes you just make the wrong
call. As much as I givePJ grief sometimes for his conservative nature and
not unwillingness to be aggressive in thosesituations. Boy, that that one screamed

(42:57):
of, do it be more cautious? Punt it with two to eleven left
to make them go, even ifit's even if you kick it in the
end zone accidentally and it's eighty Imean, best case scenario, you pin
them. Yeah, but if youkick it in the end zone and it's
you know, and it's a touchbackor usc notre dame. Do you guys
watch any of that? I didn't. I was playing a little bit checkers
with the kids. I was gonnasay, shoots and ladders very good.
There's a game called ninety nine. It's a very good card game. Never

(43:20):
heard of her. It's a greatgame. Yeah, where you add up
stuff. You can't go over ninetynine. You got ninety nine. You
can flip it, you can. It's good for the math, for the
kids. Actually, it's good forme refresh, that's right, but it's
good for the kids as well.Well. It was just more so Caleb
Williams finally had his first game whereit didn't look great. And then you've
also got that USC defense man gotthe dudes, Yeah, giving up forty

(43:44):
something points the Notre Dame looking likeOklahoma of the Lincoln Riley Ero. Yeah,
well you sort of felt like USCwas not living a lie, but
not as good as whateverby thought.Yeah, and then everything's still ahead of
them, just like it is forOregon to even with these losses. But
it's like an interesting year now thatwe're just over halfway through the year.
You look at like the top tenright now, like everything has kind of

(44:07):
gone chalk. I would say, where you've gotten like Michigan, Ohio State,
Penn State. I think they're allundefeated right now, and two of
those teams obviously play this weekend.I don't want to talk about that before
we go. I mean, you'vegot Oregon and Washington lived up to the
hype. But the teams that weresupposed to be good, even like a
Florida State, they've been good. And now I mean it's going to be

(44:27):
interesting to see now that there's actuallygoing to be some of these games starts
being played, such as Penn StateOhio State. Man, you're gonna have
some great college football games. Whendid the first playoff rankings come out?
It'd be after Halloween, I think, yeah, couple weeks. Still,
it's usually like the last one getsin. Yeah, I think that's about
right. Yep, I mean Oklahoma. Speaking of Oklahoma's probably a little bit

(44:50):
of a surprise, Yeah, thatthey're undefeated and obviously knocked off Texas a
few weeks ago. Allen Gabriel's playingawesome for them. But we've got a
couple of games to mention on theway out here. This Pennce, Ohio
State one. I think Penn Statewent straight up. That's what's the horseshoe
I've got. According to Caesars,I know you're an MGM guy because you
just had a rum runner there.Yeah. The ESPN Caesars Sports Book has

(45:14):
Ohio State four point favorites. Thatgame is in Columbus. I'm going Penn
State. You guys, I thinkare in the majority of public opinion,
and that's why I probably would too, because I'm a big Franklin guy.
I think he's quietly well, thatis a buka back for this game.
He didn't didn't played last week.I don't think Ohio State's top two running

(45:35):
backs played last week. And there'sever since banged up vibe around the buck
Eyes. It's a little fraudulent, well, not fraudulent, but like,
are they the college football playoff Buckeyesthat we've seen? Lou Holt. Holt
tried to say, to your point, are they like are they twenty twenty
two Penn State last year? Liketwenty twenty two Penn State last year lost
to Michigan Ohio State and then beateverybody by a combined twenty five million Yeah,

(46:00):
but are they good enough to becollege football playoff good This twenty three
year old house state team. We'regonna find out this weekend. I I
I think Penn State is legit.I think their overall team speed is the
best I've seen. I think Michigan'sthe most complete team yep. If I
had to rank them, I wouldgo Michigan, Pen State, O House

(46:21):
State, just from what I've seen. I watched the first quarter of that
Michigan Indiana game. Who's your hungfor a minute, Michigan had just slept
walk through the first quarter. Yeah, and then they end up still winning
by thirty points because they're so freakinggood. Once they want to be there,
they can hit a button. Yeah. Well, you mentioned you can
rank them one, two, three. I mean that's probably three of the
top seven or eight teams in thecountry. And that's what That's what life

(46:44):
in the Big ten East is likeright now. And then you're good with
Tennessee Alabama. How we feeling thisweekend? This is not the Alabama team
that we're you know where they eleventh, They ranked eleventh, Tennessee seventeenth.
Balls are five and one. It'sjust nine and a half Alabama favored,
you know, in Knoxville or inBama. We're down in Bama on the

(47:07):
sideline. Yeah, yeah, Iwant to trust the quarterback Milton, but
I have a hard time getting there, especially because the Bama quarterback has been
playing better. Yeah. Just that. Yeah, and he that was the
biggest thing for them early on,just the quarterback play, just the inconsistency
throwing the ball with Milton. Youknow, the third Saturday October is always

(47:30):
special to me, and that wasone of my favorite Tennessee memories of my
lifetime a year ago this time. But I just I think you tweeted out
a picture and you're paying managers.I did, I remember that, and
now you aren't moved to tweet anythingexcept your family after the last football game
that you went to. Surprised hewas just even feeling anything. What restaurant
was that it was? I can'tremember the name of it, but it

(47:53):
was. It was in the oldIt's like a it's on the outskirts and
it's in like a train old traindeponents, I mean five star it is.
I literally ate their last I don'tremember the name of it. I
remember, yeah, yeah, it'svery We had a wonderful dinner there.
NBC executives looked at this game thisweekend at two thirty and said, Deacon

(48:16):
Hill versus eight and caliac manus, let's go think about that. If not
now, then win, this isthe time. If not now, will
you guys, will you guys cometo athletes village to chronicle Floyd of Rosedale
being brought. I'll be driving backat midnight. I'll still be in Iowa.
Yeah, you'll be done. You'llbe hammering it, you'll be breaking

(48:38):
keys. I still I loved it. I told my wife the story about
how you broke multiple keys. It'slike two years those things where she goes,
did he drop his laptop? Igo, no, he was typing.
She goes, that's not typing. She goes, I've never even We
should do a video. We shouldthe next home game Michigan State. You
should just put while he's got hislittle headphones on. Well, actually,

(49:00):
maybe I'll do it because for youwon't go downstairs Michigan State. It's a
two thirty or walking late Michield State. I will be on my way to
I have the vikings that we can. Oh, okay, so you'll be
out. That's my birthday. Ohhappy birthday, fifty two. I'll be
