2023 Week Eleven Review: Gophers Routed at Purdue, What Happened to the Defense?, Michigan, Jimbo

Busy show this week as Chip Scoggins, Ryan Burns and Justin Gaard spend a ton of time discussing what has happened to the Gopher defense this season while they review the blowout loss at Purdue. They also discuss the latest in the Michigan situation and wonder how a school can find $76 million to fire a coach as Texas A%M just did with Jimbo Fisher.

time they put up, you know, forty plus points when they beat Brett

your reaction was to what happened atross Aid Stadium on Saturday. I think
this is what it's going to beknown as this season. We've spent so
many, so many of these episodeslamenting and lambasting this offense, but now
they've lost three big ten West games. But it's scored twenty six, thirty
and thirty four points this year.Yeah, and that's going to be the

story of the year for me.Of whyn't they get to Indy. We
can talk about other years where itwas the offense. This year it was
the defense, and it culminated inexplosive play after explosive play. I think
they had five consecutive touchdown drives goingback to that Illinois game because they scored
touchdowns in West Lafayette on the firstfour drives. But it's just chip.
Yeah, explosive plays just continue todecimate this defense. Yeah, and it's

uh, I know, not havinglindenbergen or hurt him obviously, which but
how about that. I don't wantto hear about excuses. I don't want
to hear it's it's an excuse.Don't tell me you're young, don't tell
me you're injured. Everybody's injured.Purdue had they come on a TV broadcast
talking about they don't even know ifthey have an offensive line, So don't
tell me about don't talk about theinjuries. I'm tired of the excuse making

that you're hearing right now, there'sno excuse for giving up that kind of
place to that offense, which ishorrible. I mean, they're just not
good, and so there is it'sinexcuseable. And again, don't tell me
about you don't have you have younglinebackers. Nobody wants to hear that in
your seven and it is your seven. So if you're talking about your death

in year seven, that's a coachingproblem. So how'd they get their linebacker?
Yeah, loisen a Burnsey Chip,Well, how did they get here?
At linebackers? Well? I alsowant to know what happened to Lennenberg
that he went from playing you cansee why impactful, how impactful he is
against Illinois, plays the best gameof his career, seemingly finish that game
healthy as far as we know,and then misses the next game. I

don't know what happened there, Butthen you get Baranowski banged up. So
how do they get here? Well, it'd be nice if you had potentially
Raylan Oliver who's at Georgia Tech,or Donald Willis who's at Western Michigan.
But even in that same breath,I'm not here to tell you they're good
players, Chip, because I haven'twatched any Georgia Tech or Western Michigan this
year. I haven't, but Ican look at the Pro Football Focus grades

for them and they're not very kind. And I would say there, they
at least played here. Those guys, I mean, Oliver played a lot
here. I feel like a lesserextent. Yeah, and they were both
just okay, if not just belowthat. And so when you get to
where you are, where their ownWestern Michigan transfer Ryan Sealy hasn't performed up

to expectations. That's why they're throwingout a true freshman against Purdue when Baranowski
goes down, because they think he'sthe best option of the three. That's
how you get here. That's thething with the portal and an I l
and everything. And it's not anexcuse, it's just when you can't go
out and buy depth. But itis interesting that the NLI you know,

ic conversation comes up after Northwestern afterthis game. Did we talk about it
after Iowa or Michigan State. Theydidn't really come up that week, did
it? No? Find that interesting? Well, why you're going to bring
it up after you lose but notafter you be teams? Well, when
people are asking you, well,why did you suck? Why did this
team get blown out? Why whycouldn't you stop anybody? It's going to

come up. Yeah, but thenit's not a problem against Iowa. But
it didn't. It didn't come up. Nobody said, hey, well he
brings that up, not even askedabout it. You asked about That's true.
We ask about the defense all thetime. I asked about the defense
right away, Go what happened defensively? Yeah, and then you bring up
in Il. Well, he doesn'tbring up in il He just brings up
that there they lost a couple ofplayers. He didn't he brought up in
Io after Northwestern when you ask himabout Darius Taylor, he brings up in

Iowa, we're gonna lose these guys. But that had nothing to do with
the Northwestern loss. He just broughtthat up on his own the week after
though. Yeah, it didn't strikeyou as interesting, not really. I
mean, there's more to there's moreto talk about in a win that he's
gonna want to talk about, forsure. I mean, we could have
talked about it in Iowa. Butwhy wouldn't We were talking about a fair

catch signal that wasn't college. I'mjust saying, when you bring that up
after losses. That's why people getfrustrated. Sure, yeah, I mean
you you can't. Yeah, butit doesn't necessarily mean that he's wrong.
It's just what I said to you, Burnsy is you can. The reasons
are the reasons. It's up toall of you how much you want to
put in to him, if youwant to say yes, that's acceptable or
no, that's unacceptable. And reallythe only person that it matters to is

Mark Coyle if he accepts that,or if he looks at it and goes,
hey, how did we get here? And my question today that we're
going to spend some time on Ihope is will that because obviously no one
wants to hear that. You're right, I'm gonna let him explain it.
I'm gonna say, hey, thenumber one question I've gotten this week is
why are you so young at linebacker? Right now? And he's going to
say exactly what he just what Bersiejust said. He's gonna say, we
lost a couple of guys in theportal. It was also a position we

were already thin at. And myquestion, my response is going to be,
Okay, so has this season orthe last couple of seasons with portal
stuff. Has it changed at all? How you feel like you need to
approach things moving forward? And that'sthe answer I want to hear, yeah,
because maybe it has, or maybeit's do I need to because the
other problem is too like sometimes whendo those guys leave April or do they

leave right away? No, Williswas in spring. I don't remember when
Oliver was a couple of the leftright. I think Oliver was. I
think Oliver is December. I thinkso then and then they got Sea leg
right, so they just theoretically wentand got the wrong guys, you know,

is Okay, well, is thischanged it? Because you do want to

Burnsy when you asked him a coupleof weeks ago about the Sunday night
football guys, the guys that theyoung players that are playing well that we
haven't heard of them. Like ifI'm PJ, I'm not answering that.
I'm not telling you, hey,who's here's who's really good as a freshman,
because you know what I mean,Because like if those guys aren't playing
next year, you know they're gonnabe in the portal. Like that's just

how it is now, Like I'dsay, yeah, Sunday, No,
we're good. Yeah, Like we'regonna tell them privately how much we like
and we're not gonna tell everybody.And again, would that matter? Probably
not. But I wouldn't want anybodyknowing who my good young players are at
the moment. I really wouldn't.I do wonder if this season has and
I don't know Mark Coole does thisbecause we know he's a huge PG fan,
But if he will sit down andsay, you know, we need

to talk about your coordinators, aboutyour office, and you need to look
at your offensive philosophy is this Doesit need to change? Do you need
to change? Yeah? I thinkthose are questions that an athletic director should
have with the head coach after twopretty disappointing seasons and in terms of not
being able to win a West titlewhen it was there to be taken and

some of these losses that you continueto see. I don't know that I
would Are you referencing twenty twenty twoor twenty twenty one or twenty nineteen is
a pretty disappointing year. Well,in terms of disappointing not being able to
win. This is a this seasonis a total disappointment. But I think,
yeah, if this one is differentthan disappointing not being able to get
over that next hurdle in terms ofwinning the West, which it doesn't matter

now because it's you know, theWest is going away, but until it
comes back, until until we've gotfor it, do you think you have
to I think we said this lastyear about PJ, and he didn't.
You know, you need to lookat your coordinators. Are you being you
know, unreasonably loyal to guys thatyou like and you've been around long time,

and then also you're just your wholephilosophy on offense? I mean,
I just but what about Burnsy's pointthat they've scored what what's the point total
offensively in losses three big ten Westlaws? And this one doesn't bother me
as much as because this one thedefense gave you no chance to win.
But Illinois, for example, wellthey're first in the West in points scored
and they were coming into last week. Yeah it's not maybe it's not just

so much, but they've lost points. But it's like them, they've lost
big ten West games where you scoredtwenty six, thirty and thirty four.
Yeah, I mean, I'm notsaying it's just and I would argue this
perdue game. This was the firsttime I think PJ finally looked at himself
and talked to the offensive coordinator andsaid, we can't stop anybody. You
got to keep the foot on thegoal. Yeah, this dictated it.
And some of this was garbage pointstoo. Let's be at the empty point.

(18:44):
Yeah, that's why I said Idon't even worry about this last week
because the field goals, like theymoved the ball. The field goal thing.
My biggest problem with the offense isyou get it to the twenty two
and you get to serve. That'sthat's That's the thing I'm saying. But
yeah, it's not so much likelike your whole system, but it's the
philosophy of this conservative nature and playingfor field goals and third and nine,
we're going to run it because wejust want to kick a field goal.

We don't trust guys. It's likethat. Stuff adds up. Yeah,
it comes back to this year.I mean, it adds up. It
is the conversation if you're coil that. But I don't know Cole is going
to have that conversation. But it'sthe conversation I think you need to have.
Is I think Coyle can see itlike we do on this podcast,
where it's it's clear that you havea direction you want to go on offense,
but then there's moments and games whereyou PJ get your hands so all

over this thing where it's clear weknow who's calling plays and then who's dictating
plays in these certain situations. Butyou know he's I just don't know that
it'll change. I mean, that'swhat we're all. That's the larger point
here, is it's going in thenext year. You have to adapt.
I mean you just have to adapt. I mean, didn't we have the
same conversation at the end of lastyear too, Like yeah, yeah,

this year has been as bad aslast year. I know. It's I
mean the first the first halfs ofthese passing games, it's been good.
It's been solid. I mean Athen'sbeen good. He's been moving the ball
around, multiple guys have scored.Then something happens in the second half like
they've done, where the wheels justkind of stop because I don't put this.
I mean, last year, Imean they were I mean last year
they lost to Purdue. They scoredten, right, I mean it was

just a debacle every step of theway. And so I don't I don't
think last year's offensive struggles are thesame as this year's. They're definitely.
Yeah, well they're also on runningback. I mean, Jordan Nubn's a
great story, but also you weregiving Jordan Nuben twenty carries and like,
you don't have any depth. Youhave no depth at running back right now,

(20:33):
we're not allowed well and we're notallowed to talk about that. Chip
said, don't say, don't saydeath. Well it's yeah, it's like
and their death of running back hasbeen good, I know, I mean
it makes sense. They at thedefense tackle or defense line has been good.
Depth linebackers not can't be deep everywhere. No, But you know there's
things about this whole season is like, why have they had such a big

problem with drop passes? Yeah,it's not just this year. I feel
like I've been going to the PJat least I've been going to Fleck press
conferences since twenty nineteen, where hecomes in just lamenting his And that's the
funny part is he's the NFL receiverscoach, he's the college receivers coach.
Yeah, and second straight week,a senior receiver just drops a touchdown,

(21:17):
right, And it's not just likeoccasionally, it's a lot like it's a
problem like Athen's passes aren't always accurate, and so that plays a little bit
of a part in do it.I'm not here to tell you otherwise,
but I mean Attman Bell did notplay well. Even though he caught a
touchdown. He dropped that touchdown whereif he catches it, it's twenty eight
twenty seven at halftime, and thenthe first drive of the second half,

(21:38):
I hate the second half passing gamemore than anyone. Yep, first third
down, Chris just drops it.It couldn't have been in a better spot.
It drops it. I think thethird drive third down, another drop.
And yeah, for a kid likeeighth and caliac Manus who continually doesn't
have consistent success in the second half, you're trying to get these short,

easy throws to get him going.And then in the second half of games,
or even in the second quarter whereaupman Beel drops it, just you
need guys make plays, and they'reprobably more compounded because you know, Kali
mass is gonna have passes where hethrows them at their feet. Yeah,
right, for sure. Yep,he's inconsistent, and so when he does
put it on the money and youdrop them, they're like, it's even
ten times worse. Well, wealways talked about the small margin frere in

the passing game to have mistakes historicallybecause they didn't do it a whole lot.
Now they're doing it more, butit seems like, yeah, it's
always something like PJ said, afoot off here, or the guy drops
it or whatever. Now when yousay the coordinators, are you talking about
the offensive coordinators, Well, well, special teams for sure. Okay,
yeah, that's a whole other.Yeah, that's something I think we all
kind of agree. Yeah, Imean that's where that's to say. The

loyalty. I mean you have tosit here and say, okay, listen,
like, right, what are wedoing because the numbers historically because offensively
I'm with Burnsy and this has beenmy Brian Farrens thing, Like I think
Brian Farance is getting a raw deal. Now that's taken them with a grain
of salty he's had a he's hada good job for a long time.
Yeah, and obviously, but it'slike when your head coach has a philosophy,

it's hard for the coordinator to justgo agains it. Yeah, it's
your dad. When I say coordinators, I meant coordinator. Okay, yeah,
okay, let's say where there aresome issues in the first six games
of the year with the offense hundredpercent as you're breaking in a brand new
coordinator on offense, but if youcan't see a thing getting better in the
four games since the buye and morepoints being scored. Now they're finally scoring
on opening drives too. Like,I think there's things to build upon offensively,

but I also just think when you'reon Jordan Nuben for twenty carries a
game right now because Zach Evans getshurt again again, Darius Taylor is still
on the bench. Yeah, SeanTyler got a carry right with the end
with like sixty seconds left, andthen Bryce Williams is out. That's him.
I would have just dropped it justbecause yeah, sorry, no,

(23:56):
I'm just kidding. Yeah, it'sit's uh, you know, a season
like this and these losses really makeyou like it's clear to me the one
spot we've talked about linebacker that theycould have used as Flip Dixon sting.
Yeah, him paired alongside Nubman backthere, because that's strong safety position.
Fleck mentioned it yesterday. Yeah,he compared that Purdue game to twenty eighteen

Howden is the guy who is goingto be the poster child. That's the
other thing where like, defensively,I do give him a little a little
