2023 Week Three Review: North Carolina Recap, Big Ten Weekend, Burnsie in the Bathroom

Burnsie, Chip and Gaardsy recap their weekend in Chapel Hill: Chipper is now a star, Burnsie had an awkward bathroom moment and Gaardsy had a disappointing dinner Friday night. They then talk about the disappointing all-around effort by the Gophers in the loss to the Tar Heels before discussing how the team can move forward. They also preview the big games this Saturday and run around the Big Ten West.

Burns he burned us because he's gotfamily in the area, so he didn't
want to hang out with this Chip. But we were there Friday night.
We were obviously there Saturday. How'severybody doing? We good? Chips distracted?
All right, I'm good, careless? What is your phone percentage?
Bad? What's going on? Iwould hope? So I'm good.

I mean, the thing I learned, I recovered. I'm I got some
sleep in since the trip backs,I'm good. Yeah, Chip got up
at two forty five in the morningto go to the airport, you psychopath.
It was a three thirty pm flight. You got to get there,
you got you don't know ship.The traffic was surprisingly bulky in the Triangle.
I'm always nervous though, when Ihave to schedule on UBER that time,

because I got burned one time wherethey just didn't show up. Yeah,
where the driver just isn't there.So sure, so it makes me
nervous. I build in a littleyou never know, build it. How
long? How long did you buildin for possible UBER? What's how was
your flight absence? I think myflight was at five twenty that's early.
Yeah, I mean two forty fivemakes that's actually pretty good for you.

I'm surprised you went to bed atall. It was tough. It was
like an hour of sleep. Iwas I was watching a little bit of
the Colorado game, because why not. Yep, we'll talk about that.
But then I was are like,you know, I gotta get a little
sleep. So he's about an hoursleep, Okay. I learned that there's
two different types of ever Clear,one fifty one and one ninety one ninety
proof, which has got to bestraight ethanol. That's right. You can

run a car off that. Iwould say, that's right to the kayak
if you're drinking it. Yeah,you're running right to the kayak. Yeah.
I found my way into some goodold fashioned Mason Jar moonshine straight from
the Appalachians you can buy in stores. Now, Uh, this one didn't
not that brand. No, somebody'sbathtub. But I'm gonna tell you that
apple pie tasted outstanding. And thentrying it's just it's so much, so

difficult to now do that at myage, at thirty. It hurts.

You didn't even know I left.I thought everybody left because I was
talking to some parents of the hilltop of the hill right on Franklin Street.
Very cool campus street. There's alot of activity, a lot of
buzz, a lot of excitement.And I said by to Randy Johnson,

did you leave, by the way, We're already home. Yeah,
I'm about to go to bed.Yeah. I was still sitting there having
a beer and I looked around,was like, where did everybody go?
No, we all left. Sorryabout that. That's alright. I feel
bad. How are your triple hazyIPAs from North Carolina's good? The IPA
Top of the Hill was underwhelming.I got there, the one that they

make there. It was fine.Yeah. We went to a Carolina brewery.
Yeah, that's where I wanted togo. Yeah, it was good.
I had a couple of beers there, and the guards he said,
they're at top of Hillton. Hebailed on me like three minutes after I
got there. That's a little aggressive. I was there for quite a while,
half hour. We had a goodspot. Somebody ran right up to
me and asked if I needed aone fifty one floater. Amen to that.

how do I look today? DoI look, okay, great, I

Now I can't go anywhere without somebodyasking me about Chip's phone. I sit
down on whatever Delta flight we runtwo twenty was that the flight we were

it, as you know, Yeah, by the bathroom, one row from

you never know. You don't don'thave to be diving through carts and things
like that. You want good,good accessibility. That's usually where I sit
when I bring the kids. Eithergot to be way up in the front
or way up in the back.Can't fly a family of five way up

Andy Greeter's flight, that was awesome. And I'm I haven't even like started
to put my bag down, anddude on the other window I'm on the
aisle looks at me and said,hey, Scoggins is back there. You
think he's charging his phone, noquestion, no doubt. And then we
got the group chat. But yousaid everywhere you win, Anthony Scoggins.
People were just all over it wasawesome. Well I don't know they're all

over me, but you know,when I I wanted to start this podcast
a couple years ago. I feltlike there was a avoid in this market
of college football talk, right,and I was other than the highly taught
of Gopher Good Iron podcast, waymore advertisers than us. Hit hit Hit
makes me sad, but you know, I felt like people would listen because

there's there's so much Vikings talk somuch, you know, and like going
to the turnout for Gopher fans therewith this phenomen awesome great but it was
It's like everywhere I went someone said, hey, love the podcast, love
listening, and that made me feel. Guys like, yeah, totally,

could see him now, I knowcelebrity now and he's and then you know,

Guaranteed Rate Bowl, which you bailed. Honestly classic. Yeah, it was
nine fifteen, beautiful night up andthere it was. But what that night

I was gonna say, you gotto see those two that Yeah that's
after Dark. Yeah, Parent isfair after Dark starring melt Tucker. You
had. Where was that going again? Oh? But even then, I
remember walking around the soda social andI couldn't like go five feet with it.

because thank you. I swear everybody. I think every Gopher fan that travels
listens to us, which is thebest. I mean, because you're the
hardcore, the people that because itain't cheap, as we all know,
to travel around and go watch yourteam and do all of these things.
And so it's awesome that all ofyou out there are making these trips because

I'll say, from the field,the Gopher sections looked incredible and it didn't
go unnoticed by athletic director Mark Coyle, it didn't go unnoticed by people with
the football staff that came up andgo, man, this is amazing.
And you guys are not there tomess around. That's what I like about
the Gopher fans. Now something isflipped and every Gopher fan has their own
deal, right, But the newgeneration that I think started around the Citrus

Bowl, you guys are not thereto mess around, and that's what you're
not just there. Oh this isnice. We're gonna see Chapel Hill,
like you want your team to win. It was woud on those first couple
third downs for North Carolina. Andwe appreciate that. It seems like every
single person that's on these planes oron Franklin Street listens to the pod,

And so taking a p and thensomebody pulls up next to me, taps
me on the shoulder and says,hey, big fan. Puts his hand
across the barrier between us, andit's like sitting in front of my chest.

And I'm like, oh, doI shake it? Nope? Do
I not? You know? Andit did. I panic and I shook
it, which his right hand,my right hand ninety percent of the world's
right hand dominant. I would assume. I'm thinking to myself, of all
the plays, you couldn't wait tillwe were like behind us. He didn't
want to miss his chance. I'mnot I'm gonna be washing my hands either

way. He didn't know are youa twenty second guy, he sing the

All right, let's talk about thegame. Disappointing game. We already already
kind of mentioned that PJ was nothappy. You guys were in the press
conference. I was in. Iwas doing my interview with him, and
you can just tell when he's annoyed. And I think he had the same
feeling that a lot of us had. And I know a lot of Gopher

fans had. It was a gamewhere it's like, hey, guys,
like you're not out manned, Yeah, you're just what are you doing?
And offensively that's where we're gonna start. I mean I watched a little bit
back again this morning. I mean, whether it's the first interception to Brevin
span Ford or Corey Krum's wide open, or Elijah Spencer with a drop or
Lamecki Brockington wide open, but thequarterback is cramping, which we'll get to

the cool Kramer pick. When you'redown twenty one thirteen, despite all of
the crap that happened middle of thethird quarter, it's a one possession game
and you're driving and you just couldn'tget out of your own way Burns.
He will start with you, whatdo you think worst offensive performance in terms
of self inflicted wounds in a longtime. I mean, that just were

all worst game they've played since PennState, which about ten months ago.
But that Penn State team was clearlybetter than them talent wise. Yeah,
North Carolina's first start. I meana lot of things went into that.
North Carolina was not clearly better thanthem. Outside of Drake May that team
I didn't think was that good tome, but just offensively, that's the
worst game Ethan I think has played, maybe in his career, but the

worst performance from a Gopher quarterback insome time. When you're just flat out
missing guys down the field or ballplacement overall. Reven unfortunately has another one
where it's tipped and it's an interception, but if that ball's placed ahead of
him, it's probably a touchdown.If your quarterback's going to complete thirty eight
percent of his passes, you're notgoing to beat a ranked team on the

road. I'm gonna write that downbecause you're writing middle. Yeah. I
don't know what is going on withAthan because I keep, you know,
I keep thinking about what we sawlast year from him, and I don't
know if it's if it's mechanics,if it's uh, the game's a little

fast for him right now. Idon't know if. But he's just all
over the place. He's off,he's off, erratic, errant, and
it's throws that you know, youfeel like he's he can make routinely,
it's just not making it. Yeah, I know, And so I I
know he's probably I asked, Iasked, Pj's like is it youth?

Is it you know, mechanics why? He says a little bit of everything,
So it probably is. But youknow, he's not given his receivers
a chance to make plays and they'reopen and they're yeh and the and the
infect and when he does make itthrow, they drop or they slip or
what you know. So it's justthat compounds it. But he's better than

this. I know he's better thanthis. Well he has, He's plays
play better. We've seen it.You would hope this is the floor game
for anything. Yes, this isthe worst game that he ever plays at
the collegiate level. That's what you'rehoping. So I don't know. You
know, it's funny because Harbow saidlast week that I asked him, mess
it, what's the most difficult thingabout being a play caller or the most
challenging thing on game day? Andhe said getting the quarterback into rhythm.

And he said he's always mindful ofcalling it some throws early that gets Ethan
going. And I felt like hedid that that first drive. Yeah,
and then he has the one tothe interception, the bad throw to he
just never recovered. He never Idon't know, Well, he started and
that's where the cramping thing is interesting. The last drive of the half that
they scored that made it twenty one. Gotten a rhythm there, yep.

And then when he doesn't have tothink, yeah, well then they were
moving the ball in the third quarterand then he cramps. Yeah. So
it's like that little stretch there.I heard you guys talking about it on
Go for Gridiron that stretched there.He was starting to play better, yeah,
and then he had to leave thegame for a minute. We all
know what happened, but it tookhim a really long time. It took
him an entire to get to thatlevel consistently. And then it was over

and it was gone, and bythen the defense've been on the field forever
and it was over. Yeah,I mean it was once they went to
a two mint drone. I don'tknow if it was just because of the
situation where you're just not thinking,you're just you're reacting. Maybe that was
something to do with that. Maybethey go tempo, you know, to
try to just get him. Iwould at this point, I think I'd
try anything to try to get himgoing, because you're right, Darius Taylor,

he looks like he'll be good.He looks like he looks he's the
guy. He's clear that you're numberone now, I mean he's replaced Sean
Tyler's your one. But you knowthirty seven and Burns, you've been harping
on that has give you the statbeen harping on the exposive plays. So
I looked it up last night onCFB stats. They are one of only

two FBS teams that do not havea offensive play over thirty yards. Jeez.
The other be in Sam Houston State. Iowa has seven of them,
so they have got to figure outa way to get some explosive places.
Well, here's the thing, likeeverybody. The other thing that I think
people are just wrong about is Harbowas a play caller. Like, if

you want to be mad at GregHarbow about something, be mad at Greg
Harbow the quarterback coach, not GregHarbow the play caller right now, because
he's dialing up shots that are open. Yeah, I'd say if you're upset
about him in the red zone,sure, I mean that's the one area
where they still don't know what theyare, but they're dialing up these explosive
plays and they're not hitting them,overthrow them. But yeah, maybe the

most important thing that Flex said yesterdayand again in football, we all live
by that hear what you say,trust what you do thing. But Flex
coming out at the end of thepress conference, it's saying, we know
the passing game is bad, butyou know you've seen me historically, then
just throw it to the side andwe don't work on it. And then
he's like, I'm not going todo that because that's the strength of this
team. Well, that's the firstfor PG to say that it's true.

(18:53):
That's the first time I can rememberhim saying that and admitting, yeah,
I've completely gone away from it before. Well, because he knows there's a
ceiling on that offense. You've seenit. There's a proof there's a lower
ceiling when you do that. That'sthe thing we're all up in arms because
they haven't been able to generate explosiveplays easily since twenty nineteen when rist Bateman
and Tyler Johnson were doing it.So essentially for the last three full seasons

and three games of this year,they haven't been able to generate explosive plays.
You know why. Part of itbecause they never really work on it
in a game. And then whenyou miss your two shots, miss another
shot fleck historically, well, thenthrow it to the side and they never
work on it on Saturdays. Sothat's my hope is for the next two
games. Just in general, you'rea twelve point favorite this weekend, and
then there'll be another two touchdown favoriteagainst Louisiana. You could run the ball

fifty times in both games and winthe game. But what is that accomplished
for this offense? Well, thenyou want to get better at explosive passing
plays. Keep calling explosive passing playson Saturday and working on them when the
bullets are flying. Because he needshe needs as Pjas said it several times
last week, you need those reps. You gotta do it in the game.
It's great to be able to doit in practice. We saw him

(20:02):
when we went to the fall camp. They hit those. Well, you
haven't hit him in a game wherethe speed's a lot different and guys are
trying to hit. What's the thing. I go back to the Wisconsin game.
I mean, how many explosive playsdid they get out of that?
At least throwing the ball down that'swhy they won. Yeah, I mean
even on the flip side. Imean North Carolina hit four explosives of over
thirty eight yards on four different drives. Twenty four of their thirty one points
come because of those. That's howimportant explosive plays are. Why is Minnesota's

offense last and then Big ten andscoring offense. It's directly tied to chip
stat They can't generate h explosive playsor they're struggling too, So you've got
to keep working on it against Northwesternand in Louisiana next week. Yeah,
because we've seen it's just so hardwhen you get to have a ten play
drive, right, Well, that'swhat they try to do to other teams.
Yeah, there's but it's hard toscore like that consistently when you have

because something's gonna go wrong, theyhave a hold or yep, they're gonna
stop you, they're gonna missus.Rock ball is gonna get tipped. Yeah.
If you would just hit Brevin spanFord in front of his body on
the first drive of the game,it's a twenty five yard scoring play.
If you hit Lamecki brocking in there, he walks in for a touchdown,
it's fifty plus yards. Corey CRuMsit would have been a forty plus yard
game. You had opportunities left andright. Your quarterback's just not picking the

throws. He was interesting too.You never pg after a game. He's
like, you know, he basicallysays, spanning forward's gotta catch that ball.
He said, we gotta play bigger, you know the balls there.
We got it. Yeah, itwas a bad throw. That would have
been a great catch. The onehe needed to catch was later in the
third down. He probably could havegotten the first down. It's right there.
Yeah, Like he can't drop that. You just can't drop. You
have a lot of spencer drop one. You have Chris Ottman Bell's who plays

four snaps in the game, andhe falls down on his only target.
Yeah, that's where if Daniel Jacksonfell down by the goal line after they
got the interception, after they hadthe paddles applied to him, got that
great pick by Jack Henderson. Yeah, get a first down. It's first
and goal from the five. Youknow they don't get in they kick a
field goal. Like that stuff matters. Let's talk about this slipping in the

was full, the patio was full. I saw a chip pull into the
parking lot. I could tell hewas getting a little jumpy because the first
couple of rows, we're full.But then he just went to like row
three or row four right chip andyou easily found parking there. And it
was a wonderful night. Yeah.I didn't realize how big that parking lot
was. When I pulled in.I was like, oh, it's massive.
It was like, but I foundit. It's a great park a

lot. Which it's the little things. It's the simple things that I like.
Right, make it easy, nota lot of hassle. Just find
a parking spot. I don't wantto have to circle the block fourteen times.
Make some reservations. You get thosematchbooks which are outstanding. I used
one to light a candle this morning. Oh good for me while I was
picking up candles and trying. It'sa whole wellness plan. It's a holistic
approach. Smells good in there.They've got steaks, they've got seafood,
