Glenn Mason sent a long time agoat the University of Minnesota, need a
Pair and a spare. Thank you, PJ. You sounded a lot more
excited that day at Big ten MediaDay than you did after the Gophers and
North Carolina. Welcome to the Parentof Spare podcast. I'm justin Guard from
KFAM. We've got Chipscoggins from theStar Tribune, Ryan Burns go for Illustrated
dot Com. We are presented asalways by our good friends at Jack's Cafe

(00:21):
j a xcafe dot com. Wanta Sunday brunch? Still got time to
go outside? We want to playin holiday dining. They're ready for you
if you just want to have anice date night or just go hang out
and watch games like we did acouple of weeks ago in that very cool
old school bar ninety years in Minneapolis, Jack's Cafe, Jack's Cafe dot Com.
How are we doing, guys?We all made it back. The
Parent of Spare Hit the Road,Parent of Spare hit the Road Saturday,

(00:45):
I guess Friday, more specifically togo to Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Burns he burned us because he's gotfamily in the area, so he didn't
want to hang out with this Chip. But we were there Friday night.
We were obviously there Saturday. How'severybody doing? We good? Chips distracted?
All right, I'm good, careless? What is your phone percentage?
Bad? What's going on? Iwould hope? So I'm good.

(01:07):
I mean, the thing I learned, I recovered. I'm I got some
sleep in since the trip backs,I'm good. Yeah, Chip got up
at two forty five in the morningto go to the airport, you psychopath.
It was a three thirty pm flight. You got to get there,
you got you don't know ship. The traffic was surprisingly bulky in the Triangle.
I'm always nervous though, when Ihave to schedule on UBER that time,

(01:30):
because I got burned one time wherethey just didn't show up. Yeah,
where the driver just isn't there. So sure, so it makes me
nervous. I build in a littleyou never know, build it. How
long? How long did you buildin for possible UBER? What's how was
your flight absence? I think myflight was at five twenty that's early.
Yeah, I mean two forty fivemakes that's actually pretty good for you.

(01:51):
I'm surprised you went to bed atall. It was tough. It was
like an hour of sleep. Iwas I was watching a little bit of
the Colorado game, because why not. Yep, we'll talk about that.
But then I was are like, you know, I gotta get a little
sleep. So he's about an hoursleep, Okay. I learned that there's
two different types of ever Clear, one fifty one and one ninety one ninety
proof, which has got to bestraight ethanol. That's right. You can

(02:13):
run a car off that. Iwould say, that's right to the kayak
if you're drinking it. Yeah, you're running right to the kayak. Yeah.
I found my way into some goodold fashioned Mason Jar moonshine straight from
the Appalachians you can buy in stores. Now, Uh, this one didn't
not that brand. No, somebody'sbathtub. But I'm gonna tell you that
apple pie tasted outstanding. And thentrying it's just it's so much, so

(02:38):
difficult to now do that at myage, at thirty. It hurts.
It hurts. Now, Yeah, like it was a lot bailed on you.
You didn't even know I left.I thought everybody left because I was
talking to some parents of the hilltop of the hill right on Franklin Street.
Very cool campus street. There's alot of activity, a lot of
buzz, a lot of excitement. And I said by to Randy Johnson,

(03:00):
your partner there at Star Tribune. And then like thirty minutes later, Hey,
did you leave, by the way, We're already home. Yeah,
I'm about to go to bed.Yeah. I was still sitting there having
a beer and I looked around, was like, where did everybody go?
No, we all left. Sorryabout that. That's alright. I feel
bad. How are your triple hazyIPAs from North Carolina's good? The IPA
Top of the Hill was underwhelming.I got there, the one that they

(03:22):
make there. It was fine.Yeah. We went to a Carolina brewery.
Yeah, that's where I wanted togo. Yeah, it was good.
I had a couple of beers there, and the guards he said,
they're at top of Hillton. Hebailed on me like three minutes after I
got there. That's a little aggressive. I was there for quite a while,
half hour. We had a goodspot. Somebody ran right up to
me and asked if I needed aone fifty one floater. Amen to that.

(03:44):
You look at that? That's whatfirst of all? Real quick,
how do I look today? DoI look, okay, great, I
want to know on the on Chip'sscale of what what's my number? Let's
get the parent is spare and ahealthcare zero? All right, good,
I like I like the name. The guy said, parents spare and a
health scare was a very good tweetlast week. So all right, well,
I I worked out again today.I know you guys are happy for
me. Just trying to get lean. I'm gonna I'm gonna get leaned by

(04:06):
that Las Vegas Bowl. Baby,I'm gonna get leaned by the Music City
Bowl. All right, Burnsey,we have to deal with something you and
I. That is I'm worried aboutthat. I'm a little concerned about Chip's
head barely fitting in the room. Now, that's it, because you know,
for a long time he's been misterbeat guy, and you know he
does some media stuff and he's onwith Birero, and he's on with Chat

(04:28):
Hartman. He's done some other things, and you know he's a columnist.
Now I can't go anywhere without somebodyasking me about Chip's phone. I sit
down on whatever Delta flight we runtwo twenty was that the flight we were
on, and you know Chip getson, We'll talk about why you got
stuck in a middle seat in alittle while. He was not happy about
it, as you know, Yeah, by the bathroom, one row from
the bathroom. Oh that's good.At your age, you never know,

(04:50):
you never know. You don't don'thave to be diving through carts and things
like that. You want good, good accessibility. That's usually where I sit
when I bring the kids. Eithergot to be way up in the front
or way up in the back. Can't fly a family of five way up
in the front, so we aretypically in the back. I sit down.
Dude behind me says, hey, guarthy, you love the show.
I said, thank you this greatGopher fans everywhere on your flight, on

(05:12):
Andy Greeter's flight, that was awesome. And I'm I haven't even like started
to put my bag down, anddude on the other window I'm on the
aisle looks at me and said, hey, Scoggins is back there. You
think he's charging his phone, noquestion, no doubt. And then we
got the group chat. But yousaid everywhere you win, Anthony Scoggins.
People were just all over it wasawesome. Well I don't know they're all

(05:34):
over me, but you know, when I I wanted to start this podcast
a couple years ago. I feltlike there was a avoid in this market
of college football talk, right, and I was other than the highly taught
of Gopher Good Iron podcast, waymore advertisers than us. Hit hit Hit
makes me sad, but you know, I felt like people would listen because

(05:59):
there's there's so much Vikings talk somuch, you know, and like going
to the turnout for Gopher fans therewith this phenomen awesome great but it was
It's like everywhere I went someone said, hey, love the podcast, love
listening, and that made me feel. Guys like, yeah, totally,
as you said, this is ourcelebrity. Well and then hely his kids
could see him now, I knowcelebrity now and he's and then you know,

(06:24):
we just mentioned you guy about twentyminutes asleep. Right before he fell
asleep, he sent that nice emotionaltext. You know, I just I
knew was this podcast would be good. I love you guys, I love
our listeners. In a stead ofeuphori. Yeah it was the greatest,
But your life has changed now.I mean, yeah, you can't go
anywhere now with somebody asking what's yourphone is charged down? It happened I
can't remember if it my first slideor my second one. I had to

(06:46):
go through Detroit on way home, but I'm walking down to as some guys
like Chip you know, yeah, just starts celebrity. It's so good,
it's cute. Now you're really good. It's going to be annoying in like
two years. Alright, always letme live my life. It's had one
hundred percent. So but I mean, I do appreciate because it's it's it's

(07:10):
it's awesome, not that people arelistening, that they enjoy it, and
they totally they make it part oftheir weekly routine. So I don't take
that for granted. You guys don'ttake it. And I mean, I'm
so appreciative. Awesome. I toldyou that when I went over at the
Guaranteed Rate Bowl, which you bailed. Honestly classic. Yeah, it was
nine fifteen, beautiful night up andthere it was. But what that night
was fun? Yeah that was agood night. Interesting walk back. Yeah,

(07:32):
I was gonna say, you gotto see those two that Yeah that's
after Dark. Yeah, Parent isfair after Dark starring melt Tucker. You
had. Where was that going again? Oh? But even then, I
remember walking around the soda social andI couldn't like go five feet with it.
And so it's a long winded We'renot saying this to suck up to

(07:53):
us, saying it to suck upto you. Never's listening to this,
because thank you. I swear everybody. I think every Gopher fan that travels
listens to us, which is thebest. I mean, because you're the
hardcore, the people that because itain't cheap, as we all know,
to travel around and go watch yourteam and do all of these things.
And so it's awesome that all ofyou out there are making these trips because

(08:16):
I'll say, from the field, the Gopher sections looked incredible and it didn't
go unnoticed by athletic director Mark Coyle, it didn't go unnoticed by people with
the football staff that came up andgo, man, this is amazing.
And you guys are not there tomess around. That's what I like about
the Gopher fans. Now something isflipped and every Gopher fan has their own
deal, right, But the newgeneration that I think started around the Citrus

(08:37):
Bowl, you guys are not thereto mess around, and that's what you're
not just there. Oh this isnice. We're gonna see Chapel Hill,
like you want your team to win. It was woud on those first couple
third downs for North Carolina. Andwe appreciate that. It seems like every
single person that's on these planes oron Franklin Street listens to the pod,
So we appreciate that, and wehope that hope that we can keep doing
it for a really, really, really really really long time. I agree.

(08:58):
Yeah, I just from bottom heart, thank you. So this is
where Chip gets approached on the plane. I get approached a yurnal. Yeah,
you've been saving this story. Thiswas a story from the group text.
And we'll get to football at somepoint. But do you guys really
want to talk about the football?I don't know. I'm talking to the
audience again. How did you getthis one in the group text? You
didn't get the did you just saidit to I must have told you in
the press box. I didn't evenwant this thing anywhere. You did,

(09:20):
Yes, you did. You toldme in the press box. All right,
go ahead, and this is fromthis is good. I gotta look
at Chip size as I tell thestory. So it's Friday. I think
I took the noon flight ten thirtyflight out on telt a lot of go
for fans came up and said,hi, I appreciate all of them.
But I looked at my wife andI said, I'm gonna go, gonna
go take it out, go takea p She's like, all right,

(09:41):
So I walk in. Wait. Are we at the airport? Yeah,
at the airport right now? Yourwife came to Yeah. Oh I didn't
know that. All right, that'sI feel bad. I'm only one didn't
bring my wife. Yeah, yeah, writers, yeah, family trip.
And so taking a p and thensomebody pulls up next to me, taps
me on the shoulder and says, hey, big fan. Puts his hand
across the barrier between us, andit's like sitting in front of my chest.

(10:05):
And I'm like, oh, doI shake it? Nope? Do
I not? You know? Andit did. I panic and I shook
it, which his right hand,my right hand ninety percent of the world's
right hand dominant. I would assume. I'm thinking to myself, of all
the plays, you couldn't wait tillwe were like behind us. He didn't
want to miss his chance. I'mnot I'm gonna be washing my hands either

(10:28):
way. He didn't know are youa twenty second guy, he sing the
alphabet. He's a big listener ofthe podcast, so I feel bad for
I'm putting him on blast like this, But yeah, five Baccord moments of
my life. When someone I'm justtrying to relieve myself taps me on the
shoulder, puts his hand across hisHey, big fan, big listener,

(10:48):
and it's sat there and I waslike, I don't know that I want
to leave him hanging. So I'mjust Chip, what would you do?
Would you? So you guard two? Want to shook his hand? Chip?
I honestly, I don't know.Because the shot of it, all
the shock of it. Yeah, that's the thing. I don't panic.
Bullets are flying, you don't knowhow you're gonna. I probably would have,
but I probably would have been shocked. So I don't know. Like

(11:11):
I can't, I can't. Ican't say definitively what I I came back
and my wife looks at me,and she goes, what happened? I
go, I shook him handed ayurnal Why because I didn't know what to
top five strangest moments of my life. But because of this podcast, things

(11:31):
like that happened. Yeah, Imean, it's about real life. Sorry,
next parent is spare t shirt isgoing to be nothing on the front.
It's just gonna be on the back. I'll shake after shake. I'll
shake your hand after just on theback. So then anytime somebody comes,
Oh there's Burnsy, I'll shake hishand after this. Now it's gonna happen
to You're flying to Chicago, right, Yeah, it's gonna happen to this

(11:52):
weekend. If you see Burns broom, make it a bit. If you
see Burns, you ever leave myselfin peace? No line up right behind
him, have a little my circlelike immedia scrum waiting to shake Burnsey's hand
after he's done going to the bathroom. Man, I'm sorry that happened every
trip. I'll be disappointed if itdoesn't happen every trip. Yeah, Chip
just gets asked. I get youwant that. I don't want. I

(12:13):
don't wish that on anybody. Iguess I think it's nice. I appreciate
that guy. Listen, I hopewe didn't just lose a listener because you
made him feel bad about just wantingto shake one of his in one of
his hero's hands. But where hadour hands just been? You were gonna
you were gonna wash him anyway,I hope. So, yeah, well
you are. I'm not worried abouthis hygiene. You were gonna wash your
hands. You could have. Youstill control, You had controllables to control.

(12:35):
There is that way you drink themoonshine to help myself forget. It's
not your fault, persc. It'snot your fault. All right, Well
that was that lived up to thebilling. I'm sorry about that. Yeah,
but I hope it happens to youagain. Can I have both of
those thoughts? I'm sorry, butI hope it happens again. There we
go, So let us know whatwhat type of fun, what type of

(12:56):
trouble you got in in Chapel Hill. You can tweet at all of us
on social media as well as theparent of spare pod social media account.
All right, let's talk about thegame. Disappointing game. We already already
kind of mentioned that PJ was nothappy. You guys were in the press
conference. I was in. Iwas doing my interview with him, and
you can just tell when he's annoyed. And I think he had the same
feeling that a lot of us had. And I know a lot of Gopher

(13:18):
fans had. It was a gamewhere it's like, hey, guys,
like you're not out manned, Yeah, you're just what are you doing?
And offensively that's where we're gonna start. I mean I watched a little bit
back again this morning. I mean, whether it's the first interception to Brevin
span Ford or Corey Krum's wide open, or Elijah Spencer with a drop or
Lamecki Brockington wide open, but thequarterback is cramping, which we'll get to

(13:39):
the cool Kramer pick. When you'redown twenty one thirteen, despite all of
the crap that happened middle of thethird quarter, it's a one possession game
and you're driving and you just couldn'tget out of your own way Burns.
He will start with you, whatdo you think worst offensive performance in terms
of self inflicted wounds in a longtime. I mean, that just were

(14:00):
all worst game they've played since PennState, which about ten months ago.
But that Penn State team was clearlybetter than them talent wise. Yeah,
North Carolina's first start. I meana lot of things went into that.
North Carolina was not clearly better thanthem. Outside of Drake May that team
I didn't think was that good tome, but just offensively, that's the
worst game Ethan I think has played, maybe in his career, but the

(14:22):
worst performance from a Gopher quarterback insome time. When you're just flat out
missing guys down the field or ballplacement overall. Reven unfortunately has another one
where it's tipped and it's an interception, but if that ball's placed ahead of
him, it's probably a touchdown. If your quarterback's going to complete thirty eight
percent of his passes, you're notgoing to beat a ranked team on the

(14:43):
road. I'm gonna write that downbecause you're writing middle. Yeah. I
don't know what is going on withAthan because I keep, you know,
I keep thinking about what we sawlast year from him, and I don't
know if it's if it's mechanics,if it's uh, the game's a little

(15:07):
fast for him right now. Idon't know if. But he's just all
over the place. He's off,he's off, erratic, errant, and
it's throws that you know, youfeel like he's he can make routinely,
it's just not making it. Yeah, I know, And so I I
know he's probably I asked, Iasked, Pj's like is it youth?

(15:28):
Is it you know, mechanics why? He says a little bit of everything,
So it probably is. But youknow, he's not given his receivers
a chance to make plays and they'reopen and they're yeh and the and the
infect and when he does make itthrow, they drop or they slip or
what you know. So it's justthat compounds it. But he's better than

(15:56):
this. I know he's better thanthis. Well he has, He's plays
play better. We've seen it.You would hope this is the floor game
for anything. Yes, this isthe worst game that he ever plays at
the collegiate level. That's what you'rehoping. So I don't know. You
know, it's funny because Harbow saidlast week that I asked him, mess
it, what's the most difficult thingabout being a play caller or the most
challenging thing on game day? Andhe said getting the quarterback into rhythm.

(16:19):
And he said he's always mindful ofcalling it some throws early that gets Ethan
going. And I felt like hedid that that first drive. Yeah,
and then he has the one tothe interception, the bad throw to he
just never recovered. He never Idon't know, Well, he started and
that's where the cramping thing is interesting. The last drive of the half that
they scored that made it twenty one. Gotten a rhythm there, yep.

(16:41):
And then when he doesn't have tothink, yeah, well then they were
moving the ball in the third quarterand then he cramps. Yeah. So
it's like that little stretch there.I heard you guys talking about it on
Go for Gridiron that stretched there. He was starting to play better, yeah,
and then he had to leave thegame for a minute. We all
know what happened, but it tookhim a really long time. It took
him an entire to get to thatlevel consistently. And then it was over

(17:03):
and it was gone, and bythen the defense've been on the field forever
and it was over. Yeah,I mean it was once they went to
a two mint drone. I don'tknow if it was just because of the
situation where you're just not thinking, you're just you're reacting. Maybe that was
something to do with that. Maybethey go tempo, you know, to
try to just get him. Iwould at this point, I think I'd
try anything to try to get himgoing, because you're right, Darius Taylor,

(17:26):
he looks like he'll be good.He looks like he looks he's the
guy. He's clear that you're numberone now, I mean he's replaced Sean
Tyler's your one. But you knowthirty seven and Burns, you've been harping
on that has give you the statbeen harping on the exposive plays. So
I looked it up last night onCFB stats. They are one of only

(17:48):
two FBS teams that do not havea offensive play over thirty yards. Jeez.
The other be in Sam Houston State. Iowa has seven of them,
so they have got to figure outa way to get some explosive places.
Well, here's the thing, likeeverybody. The other thing that I think
people are just wrong about is Harbowas a play caller. Like, if

(18:11):
you want to be mad at GregHarbow about something, be mad at Greg
Harbow the quarterback coach, not GregHarbow the play caller right now, because
he's dialing up shots that are open. Yeah, I'd say if you're upset
about him in the red zone, sure, I mean that's the one area
where they still don't know what theyare, but they're dialing up these explosive
plays and they're not hitting them, overthrow them. But yeah, maybe the

(18:32):
most important thing that Flex said yesterdayand again in football, we all live
by that hear what you say, trust what you do thing. But Flex
coming out at the end of thepress conference, it's saying, we know
the passing game is bad, butyou know you've seen me historically, then
just throw it to the side andwe don't work on it. And then
he's like, I'm not going todo that because that's the strength of this
team. Well, that's the firstfor PG to say that it's true.

(18:53):
That's the first time I can rememberhim saying that and admitting, yeah,
I've completely gone away from it before. Well, because he knows there's a
ceiling on that offense. You've seenit. There's a proof there's a lower
ceiling when you do that. That'sthe thing we're all up in arms because
they haven't been able to generate explosiveplays easily since twenty nineteen when rist Bateman
and Tyler Johnson were doing it.So essentially for the last three full seasons

(19:17):
and three games of this year, they haven't been able to generate explosive plays.
You know why. Part of itbecause they never really work on it
in a game. And then whenyou miss your two shots, miss another
shot fleck historically, well, thenthrow it to the side and they never
work on it on Saturdays. Sothat's my hope is for the next two
games. Just in general, you'rea twelve point favorite this weekend, and
then there'll be another two touchdown favoriteagainst Louisiana. You could run the ball

(19:41):
fifty times in both games and winthe game. But what is that accomplished
for this offense? Well, thenyou want to get better at explosive passing
plays. Keep calling explosive passing playson Saturday and working on them when the
bullets are flying. Because he needshe needs as Pjas said it several times
last week, you need those reps. You gotta do it in the game.
It's great to be able to doit in practice. We saw him

(20:02):
when we went to the fall camp. They hit those. Well, you
haven't hit him in a game wherethe speed's a lot different and guys are
trying to hit. What's the thing. I go back to the Wisconsin game.
I mean, how many explosive playsdid they get out of that?
At least throwing the ball down that'swhy they won. Yeah, I mean
even on the flip side. Imean North Carolina hit four explosives of over
thirty eight yards on four different drives. Twenty four of their thirty one points
come because of those. That's howimportant explosive plays are. Why is Minnesota's

(20:26):
offense last and then Big ten andscoring offense. It's directly tied to chip
stat They can't generate h explosive playsor they're struggling too, So you've got
to keep working on it against Northwesternand in Louisiana next week. Yeah,
because we've seen it's just so hardwhen you get to have a ten play
drive, right, Well, that'swhat they try to do to other teams.
Yeah, there's but it's hard toscore like that consistently when you have

(20:47):
because something's gonna go wrong, theyhave a hold or yep, they're gonna
stop you, they're gonna missus.Rock ball is gonna get tipped. Yeah.
If you would just hit Brevin spanFord in front of his body on
the first drive of the game,it's a twenty five yard scoring play.
If you hit Lamecki brocking in there, he walks in for a touchdown,
it's fifty plus yards. Corey CRuMsit would have been a forty plus yard
game. You had opportunities left andright. Your quarterback's just not picking the

(21:07):
throws. He was interesting too.You never pg after a game. He's
like, you know, he basicallysays, spanning forward's gotta catch that ball.
He said, we gotta play bigger, you know the balls there.
We got it. Yeah, itwas a bad throw. That would have
been a great catch. The onehe needed to catch was later in the
third down. He probably could havegotten the first down. It's right there.
Yeah, Like he can't drop that. You just can't drop. You
have a lot of spencer drop one. You have Chris Ottman Bell's who plays

(21:29):
four snaps in the game, andhe falls down on his only target.
Yeah, that's where if Daniel Jacksonfell down by the goal line after they
got the interception, after they hadthe paddles applied to him, got that
great pick by Jack Henderson. Yeah, get a first down. It's first
and goal from the five. Youknow they don't get in they kick a
field goal. Like that stuff matters. Let's talk about this slipping in the
cramping. You want to get tothe cramping. Why don't we get to
the cramping after the break? Jack'sCafe, Jackscafe dot Com, great partner

(21:56):
on the Pair and a spare podcast. Been in Minneapolis for ninety years,
and they've got an outstanding new websitethat makes it very easy to make reservations.
Check out the entire menu if youwant to go for Sunday brunch,
if you want to go for adate night, if you just want to
go hang out and watch some games, and they're outstanding bar. They've got
everything for you, including it's timenow to start booking and start thinking about
holiday dining. They've got plenty ofrooms, they've got plenty of space.

(22:18):
I mean, I think they coulddo any group from five to ten to
two hundred and fifty. I mean, that's just how they roll at Jack's
Cafe. Rehearsal, dinners, weddingstuff. It's all good. We certainly
love going there, and we knowthat there's one thing that Chipskoggins likes about
at Burnsey, it's that he knowshe's got a place to park. Even
when we were there to watch football, it was a slamming night at Jack's
that night, that Saturday night,Week zero. The whole the dining room

(22:40):
was full, the patio was full. I saw a chip pull into the
parking lot. I could tell hewas getting a little jumpy because the first
couple of rows, we're full. But then he just went to like row
three or row four right chip andyou easily found parking there. And it
was a wonderful night. Yeah.I didn't realize how big that parking lot
was. When I pulled in.I was like, oh, it's massive.
It was like, but I foundit. It's a great park a

(23:04):
lot. Which it's the little things. It's the simple things that I like.
Right, make it easy, nota lot of hassle. Just find
a parking spot. I don't wantto have to circle the block fourteen times.
Make some reservations. You get thosematchbooks which are outstanding. I used
one to light a candle this morning. Oh good for me while I was
picking up candles and trying. It'sa whole wellness plan. It's a holistic
approach. Smells good in there. They've got steaks, they've got seafood,

(23:27):
they've got brunched, they've got lunch. I'm looking at a lobster roll sandwich
right now. It's all good atJack's Cafe. We appreciate their support.
We talked about earlier in the podhow much. We love the listeners of
the pod. We also love Billand everybody at Jack's Cafe for jumping in
with us a year ago and justmaking it a fun family deal with the
with the hashtag pair and a sparefam because he's been great to us.
He's been great to all of youthat have been listening with ticket gave aways

(23:48):
and things and support those who supportus. Have your next outstanding meal at
Jack's Cafe Jax Cafe dot com.Cramping never good. It's happened every game,
and it happened early on Saturday.Guys were cramping at halftime, including
Justin Wally. I understand why DariusTaylor was cramping. He was carrying the

(24:11):
entire offense. But you're starting quarterbackwho's not exactly Michael Vick scrambling around,
running around. He cramps early inthe third quarter and has to leave the
game. You guys were in thepress conference room. I was not what
did PJ have to say about thatpostgame? You know that irritated would strongly
characterize say angry. Yeah, hewas angry. Yes, he talked about

(24:34):
Ethan the interception, and I said, I just want to make sure we
have right. He was cramping, right, and he's like, you can
see, like he was about hehad some thoughts and feelings that PJ says
a lot like he talks. Shesays a lot of words and stuff,
but he almost says more when hedoesn't talk. Sometimes. Yeah, and

(24:55):
he started by what he said,in the old days, we used to
say that was unacceptable. I couldn'tunderstand what I couldn't say it this other
step. Well now he said thesame difference. He said, we can't
have cramping. He said, withall the preparation and all things we do,
he's right. He said we hadway too many I said, way
too many players. He's like yes. And when Fleck doesn't say words,

(25:15):
and when Fleck means he's mad atsomebody, he wants to throw somebody under
the bus, but he knows hecan't because because it's gonna look bad.
And he put it all on him, which is you know it is?
Well this week he said, it'smy job to make sure we don't cramp.
But yep, it's the first straightgame. But I left there and
burns. He probably the same wayas like, was he mad at his
players? Was he mad at theoperations team? The dot, the medical

(25:37):
step everybody probably, but I'm assumingthey have some type of plan and protocol
and you know how these guys prepare, I mean all of these guys.
And so that's what's puzzling is there'sbeen games where people have cramped. It
happens because it's not always just hydration. I mean there is anxiety that goes
into it. There's a different stresssometimes if you're drinking a certain you know,

(25:59):
caffeine drink. You don't drink coffeechips, so you don't understand this,
but you know, sometimes you drinkin a red Bull or something before
the game to get yourself ready togo, and that can mess with you.
Or Yeah, there's just a millionways you can. But the number
one thing, the number one thingis being in good shape, which I
think they are, and making sureyou're hydrated correctly. And something is a
miss there. And I'm about togo do the PJF Like radio show,

(26:21):
and I hope he'll spend a fewminutes on it because he was obviously pissed
and doesn't feel like they're doing theright things. Because I didn't see a
lot of North Carolina guys cramping overthere. I don't think Northwestern cramped a
duke, you know, they werejust right down the road, right,
and it had a major impact inmy mind on what happened on Saturday.
You gotta wonder if they've made changesin the offseason to what they've done with

(26:41):
their training protocol, with what theyget after practice, what they do before
practice. But I think everything shouldbe on the table because especially with Justin
Wally, this is the third straightgame, right, he has missed time,
like you can't miss time coming outof the second half for your best
corner because he is still cramping. Was it was that first series he was
not out. He came, hewent out and warmed up and then went

(27:04):
back in. PJ mentioned that hesaid, we're at halftime and we're cramping.
Yeah, it's like fourth quarter crampingis one thing you've You've you've fought
the whole battle. We're talking aboutan hour and a half the way the
way these games are going now.And it was hot, Like you guys
were in the press box on ourside on the sideline, it was hot.
The sun was right there and thatdoes impact it obviously, But this

(27:26):
is week three and they're all ingood shape and so something is something is
missing because it shouldn't be happening tothis mini guys. No, And I'm
sure as angry as PJ seemed andsounded, I gotta imagine the performance staff
is gonna hear about it. Ithink they were hearing about it on the
sidelines on Saturday. Yeah, AndI think if my eyes don't deceive me,

(27:48):
if I mean, I can't alwaysget super close, but I can
kind of see what's going on downthere. And I don't think there was
I don't think there were a lotof pleasantries being exchanged as that was going
at the moment of truth when yourquarterback asked the lead because he's cramping.
As a head coach, I wouldbe annoyed. Yeah, when it's twenty
one thirteen in the third quarter inNorth Carolina Territory, with four minutes left
in the third quarter, you dialup another perfect play. The quarterback can't

(28:12):
get it there. Yeah, comesoff the field hobbling and then he's trying
to chug power right on the sideline. Can't happen. And the third straight
game it's happened. It's weird.It's It's to the point now where we've
spent five ten minutes talking about it. Yeah, I mean, I don't
say it costing the game, butit changed that game. Well, it
will never know what may or mayhappen, because I mean even Darius Taylor

(28:34):
had to miss some time in thesecond half, right, and he was
playing great, So like, whoknows, maybe he pops one in that
second half. That's an explosive playeror whatever. When your quarterback leaves,
it's a different thing. Yeah, you got but you just gotta have your
best players out there. Your bestplayers can't be standing by me because it's
you know, whatever time it wasfour forty eight Eastern and they're cramping.
That's that's so. Yeah, hewas pissed, and I don't blame him,

(28:56):
but like he said, he's theone that makes the final call on
all this stuff. Like I know, you get advice and doctors and medical
people and trainers and nutritionists. Imean, it's not like they don't have
people. They have plenty of peoplethat are working on this stuff. It's
just something has clearly not gone right. So I'm curious. I'm hoping we

(29:17):
can flesh it out a little bitmore today on the on the PJ.
Flack radio show, because that wassomething that they definitely need to figure out
well in the slipping too. Yeah, strange. I don't have an explanation
for Again, I think that wasthe worst played game offense, defense,
training staff, equipment staff that they'veplayed in years. Academically, social and

(29:41):
spously, offensively, defensively, specialteams, training staff, doctors, nutritionists,
everybody. Radio crew was good.We were on those cranks. I'll
tell you, yeah, we werelike it. Well, remember he sent
me a text right after halftime,Wally question Mark, and what I say?
Do you remember what I wrote back? Listen because there's one reporter up
there that listens to the radio nextto Andy Greeter. I mean I was

(30:04):
being a jackass instead of just going, he's cramping, I go, Greater
will have it. Momentarily I wasabout to say it, Wally Quster Mark,
ask Greater, he's listening. I'lltell you everything you need to know.
Just listen to the iHeart radio appcafe. Maybe I'll actually put it
in on I Heeart this weekend. Why wouldn't you, Well, it'll just

(30:25):
be me Greater is Randy going?Yeah? Northwestern? All right, so
we'll be through. I think youmight not even have to put it on.
You might just have to make surethe windows and the press box are
open, and I can yell itup to you. I can yell it
up to you at north It's justgonna echo throughout the press box at Northwestern.
Crappy again, we bring me somebad all right? Defensively, I

(30:49):
was, you guys know this,I was. I was almost as excited
for this matchup as I was forSanford Rossi a year ago. You know,
you've said that a number of times. Some of us were more excited
for that one than this one. It's a shame you still have that box
of T shirts that never sold.I was excited to see what Joe Rossi
had for this North Carolina team, and unfortunately they lost that battle. And
there they turned him over twice, which is hard to do, and you

(31:11):
know there were times where they heldin. That's a tough offense. I
mean, yeah, when he's good, and he's really good, and you
know, watching him just in person, you just get a vibe about guys.
And I'm not comparing him to TomBrady, So let's just calm down
there. But like watching Brady atthe Super Bowl, oh good for me
when it was here in Minneapolis,Like you just watch you go. This
dude is in control of everything. He knows this, he knows that what
we're gonna say, I was gonnasay. I wrote that same thing as

(31:33):
like he had total control. Yeah, that office, it's all right,
we're doing this and I'm gonna flingit out here. Okay, third and
six, all right, they're notsubbing, we're not subbing. Let's go
again. And then oh, thirdand five nothing, I'll just scamper for
five and a quarter yards. We'llkeep the clock moving, we'll keep the
chains moving. And by the way, you every pay attention because I'm going
deep now. Yeah. Like impressive. And they hung in as much as

(31:53):
they could because most of that gamewas twenty four points. It should have
been enough to win that game quitefrankly, but it was the meltdowns and
the breakdowns that ended up doing theIt was funny like on first and second
down, I was sitting there thinking, man, they're playing pretty good here,
and then like there was no panicfrom me. It was third and
eight, we're converting. Yeah, that's twelve seventeen, twelve and seventeen winning,

(32:17):
giving twelve seventeen third down and explosiveplays. I mean, so they
were kind of doing both. Butand these weren't third and ones, No,
these were third and six, thirdand eight, third and elevens.
And he just had total control, like I'll make a play. Yeah,
he's so chill, Yeah, he'she's good, and you know his interceptions.
Henderson just makes a great play onthat, and then the other one
he gets hit and why he's throwingit because they were doing some things sacked

(32:40):
him a bunch. They did agood job in the run game. And
but that's where it was. Theone you look back at though, just
the chaos, and that's Burns's favoriteplay. Watched it a thousand times,
he said, I still, forthe life of me, now, for
the life of me, knowing howPJ calls timeout, it's why he didn't
call in there. Yeah, well, because he wasn't paying attention. I
I asked him about it the spers, he said, And you can see

(33:00):
it and when you watch it back, he's at like the forty five,
he said, I didn't see thecenter, judge. I thought he said,
he was like blocked. It wasnot blocked, you just it is.
Well, here's the other thing, why the heck did Joe ROSSI try
to do. I'm telling you hockeyline substitutions. Yeah, that was like
six six six. Yeah, itwas on a live ball. It's really

(33:21):
hard. Was that an overthinking thingyou think? Yes, it's sort of
reeked a that, like, okay, they're the only thing that that would
make sense. From Joe Rossi's pointof view, is he truly believed that
someone told him in the headset,Hey, Northwestern sub so we can do
these mass subs. Yeah, youcan't do that on a live ball against
Drake my otherwise, and it's justjust ridiculous. But yes, Fleck,

(33:45):
it's on Fleck for not calling atime out there for someone who is or
somebody telling him, we gotta getwe gotta get it. It's a live
ball. Well we've seen its likeif one little mind thing is off,
he'll call it time out. Andfor that one in the first time you
have, guys, first drive, you'll do it. Mean you have just
the wind could be blowing wrong inthe first half play and Fleck has has

(34:06):
said he's very level with his timeoutusage there. And the thing is that
if you're from them that you're probablyjust then they scoring, you're down fourteen
nothing Now everything changes now you're havingto play catch up against this team,
and thanks what you want to doaway? Right, and then you get
the pick, you get the lifesupport. Yeah, because you don't move
the ball in the next drive andyour offense can't do anything with it.
But when you're down fourteen zero, things have to go really well for you

(34:28):
to get back in the deal. And they almost did. I mean we
just talked about that. But tobe down that early, you know,
and whenever the defense is doing likea player's only meeting in the first quarter,
yeah, then you know something's goneto miss. Well, that's what
they were doing. And I'll saythis, I mean Joe Rossi says,
two explosive players for your game, and they typically hit that. There's four
this game, right, You're they'renot facing the drake may too often,

(34:52):
right when's the last? But they'vegot some. I mean McCarthey, j
McCarthy, he's good. But me, yeah, I mean they might have
better, better guys, but he'sgonna be the second overall board coming.
I mean, it's you're gonna havesome. They're gonna have to be better.
They can't have the even if ChrisCollins keeps his feet when the ball
is from Yeah, that's an eightyyard d pick six. There is no

(35:15):
one in front of him, JohnJoiners laying on Drake May. It's a
foot race between Chris Collins in likea receiver fifteen yards behind him. It's
just like one of those ten playsfrom the game that it's like, if
you just keep your feet and run, that would have been fourteen ten.
And that's where long term, likeI'm probably I don't know if it's the

(35:36):
sophomore basketball coach and met chip, but I'm always of the you weren't out
manned. You've just you made somecritical airs that you should be able if
you have good players, which youthink they do. If you have good
coaches, which I think they do. I think we all are in agreement,
especially defensively, and I think Carbois calling a good game, like
this doesn't have to be cataclysmic, you know, like this doesn't have to

(35:58):
be like, man, what's goingon here? Now? They then we'll
see because it's a three game trend. He needs to get better. But
it's all these little things. It'slike, if you have a good staff
and you have talented players, whichI think they do have, that mesh
like, you should be able torecover from this and and get better and
use this as Hey, it's thebest team we've played in a while.
Yeah. Man, that probably ledto some of the mistakes because you're probably

(36:19):
going faster than you ever have. You're probably of the year. Might led
to some of the slipping. Youjust you're going too fast and whatever.
Like, I feel like you canmove on from this if you can just
kind of correct these these bad executions. I mean defensively, I mean,
that's the best quarterback you're gonna facethis year, in the best quarterback you're
facing a while. He's really reallygood. They need Ndenberg back. Yeah,

(36:40):
I don't think you're gonna see aRossi defense look kind of that chaotic
it. I mean, I justright, that's I think they're gonna be
fine. The one thing is Athan. I mean they've got to figure out
a way to get him going right. And again we know he's better than
this, right, It's just whywhy is it not clicking for him right
now? I think if there's justit for him specifically, it's not translating

(37:02):
from Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practiceto Saturday. So I think from what
I've been told, he's hitting throwsin practice, and the things they're throwing
at him are the things he doeswell, or at least he does well
Monday through Friday. They wouldn't bebringing these plays in if they weren't doing
him in practice, right, Imean that's coaching one on one. If
you're not doing it on Wednesday, you can't be calling it up on Saturday.
It's just why, why is itso errant on Saturday so far?

(37:25):
And how do you fix it asa mechanically? Is it mentally? Is
it just reps? Is it anexperience? Is it a culmination of everything?
Yeah? I don't mean if Athan'sgonna stink, this team's just gonna
stay well this was true? Well, I mean college football is such a
quarterback bit now, just like theNFL. I mean, you have to
have good quarterback play. And youwonder too because like everything is a fastball.

(37:45):
Now, it doesn't matter with theguy he's thirty yards or five yards,
he's throwing it at one hundred milesan hour, right. I assume
that develops as you get and youfigure that out as you play more.
I mean it was his eight startcareer starts, so it's not he doesn't
play full season. We need toremember that. But he's also missing on
throws that heat he feels like heshould make pretty consistently. Well, if

(38:07):
Athan's gonna play the worst game ofhis life for the next nine weeks consecutively,
this team is just gonna be horrible. Yeah, even with Joe Rossie.
Yeah, then they got to figuresomething out. But we've seen him
play much much, much better. We went down in Nebraska, they're down
ten zero. He comes back inand he's ever played like Yeah, if
he plays like that going forward everyweek, they're going to be terrible.
Pretty simple. He's going to bebetter this upcoming week, just because by

(38:30):
proxy, Northwestern is not very good. And let's put let's wrap up the
Gover conversation with that going to Northwesternbecause I have been we talked about it
last week, you wrote about it. Chip. I totally understood what they
were trying to do running the ballagainst Eastern Michigan because it had been so
bad against I think the now theopposite should be true against Northwestern. Yeah,
it's like, now get this goingbecause I've been going along with the

(38:52):
you know for a while, like, hey, if you can throw and
you can throw. It doesn't necessarily. Man, we argued about it last
year, but I've seen enough whereit's like with this right now, with
how poorly he played, like hejust needs to feel good. Yeah,
Like he just needs to whether andwhether you you don't want to put it
on tape against the bat Northwestern team, I heard Luke Buwer say this shouldn't
even matter because it's dumb your threeYou're three games in the season. Totally
agree. Just go out do whateveryou need to do to get eight and

(39:15):
in the passing game, going doit again against Louisiana because, by the
way, you got Michigan coming tothe bank on October seven, and you're
gonna need him. Yeah. We'veheard so much that he's unflappable as confidence,
you know, and that may betrue. I mean he may not
lost confidence maybe, but he's fightingit right now and he needs to feel
good about the passing game and heneeds to get in a rhythm. So

(39:36):
I would take these next two games, and I don't care what the situation
is, I would. I wouldthe Pigelant need to go back to the
other way for again historically in thesenext two games. If it was PJ.
Fleck of twenty twenty, twenty twentyone, twenty twenty two, he's
running the ball fifty times, throwingit for fifteen like he did against Eastern
Michigan. We all agree that accomplishesnothing in the scope of long term for
this season. You can win thesegames anyway. So the hope be that

(40:00):
in the next two games they're throwingthe ball at least twenty five times.
Like you can lean on Darius Taylor, you can lean on Sean Tyler doing
it. I'd also try to gethim going a little bit too, by
the way, Yeah, get himsome confidence back after he gets three carries
and including none until the second half, and only because Darius Taylor's missing time
with cramping, right, Like, this is still a very viable running back

(40:21):
rand for for one thousand yards thelast two years in the MAC. But
and you don't want to Braylan AllenDarius Taylor where by the end of the
year he's got nothing. Yeah, when you can November just beating him up
like that's not ideal. Yeah, you want to take some hits off him.
Yeah, So that's the whole forNorthwestern this weekend. I think they're
a twelve point favorite. Thirty eightover under. So Vegas thinks this thing
is going to be somewhere around, say twenty four to ten thirteen ish.

(40:45):
Okay, So like Northwestern's not verygood. Correct. You can win this
game in a lot of different ways. Win it in a way where you
can at least gain your quarterbacks someconfidence, because you have to think that
Rossi's going to have his group squaredaway and they're gonna plays ross Remember tired

(41:05):
he looked on Wednesday. Look,he's gonna look even more tired of this
Wednesday because he's so well. Ilike how what press conference was that he
was talking about? Heaven? Ithink Mariano maybe because he knows the defense
and he can help other guys, sayter Morgan's back, he is well talked
to him. Unpaid interns. Yeah, good for them. They're checking guy.
At least Tanner's us is, whichis pretty funny. I walked by

(41:29):
like it's g double A R D. He's like, yeah, I got
it, I got it. Wherewas I going? Oh? When Rossi
was talking about it's better to hearfor stuff from Mariano because like, if
I say it all the time, all that it's just Rossy and he's like
that, you know, because heknows. He's just cranky sometimes. I
mean I've I've seen that dude justgo off on guys, which is fine,
Like I'm not even it's great. He's obviously a good coach. It

(41:50):
works, but yeah, he's gota switch, like he's a good dude.
You can tell a good guy, good man, good father, all
that. But like if you don'tget the call in and practice, like
gonna hear about it, which isgreat. Last thing, go ahead,
I was gonna say, last thing. How about the other takeaway from that
North Carolina game. I think they'repretty good upfront Minnesota, the golfers,

(42:13):
and that North Carolina running game hadbeen really good through two weeks. That
running back was just the dope walkerrunning back of the week the week before
they shut down. It's the thirdstraight week that defensive line has come to
play, which is encouraging going forward. And then I think offensive line wise,
I mean they were rotating guards everyseries. Johnson got some run.
Yeah, I think their defensive linehas been one of the real bright spots.
Three. Agree, I mean they'veplayed really well. Agree, They've

(42:35):
got a lot of guys. Yeah, it seems so they have depth.
Ye mean, let me see beingable to roll guys in there, and
those guys produced, they've been abright spot. I would like some help
identifying two people, and it's theflight attendants who came out of reserve as
we wrap up the North Carolina trip. It was actually the woman. It
was the fiance of the first Thesecond guy, Yes, that's you know,

(43:00):
is chipped back. They're charging hisfall and his fiance was middle in
that role. I've met them verylovely. Yeah, they were very nice.
We chatted a little bit on theway out. I asked him when
they were getting married and all thatstuff. I think it's next July.
I think they said. I hopethat's true. I swear I was listening.
But she tweeted out shout out tothe off duty Delta flight attendants who

(43:21):
jumped in to help our flight. When you and I talked about this,
Burnsey, two flight attendants apparently wereinjured on the incoming flight to the Raleigh
area. They needed to go tothe bull No, this is the flight
was like the two thirty out ofRaleigh. Yes, and two flight attendants
Delta off duty who had flown downto go to the game. Essentially just

(43:43):
said we're flight attendants. We canclock in just so the flight can get
back home. They didn't have anytheir uniform they had I think just like
row the boat shirts or whatever itwas. But I need to know who
those flight attendants were. Those flightattendants need to be identified, because that
is commendable, as Kevin Donald wouldsay, that's being at your best when
your best is required and is steppingup. That is my neighbor is the

(44:05):
is a delta captain, and wealways joke they're very intentional about the delta
difference. So anytime he does anythinggood, I go, delta difference.
You know, made some good ribson fathers. That delta difference. I
give m a lot of crap aboutthat. That's big time. Though you're
sitting there, you're waiting, probablyhad a you know, a nice weekend
in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, thetriangle, the whole bit, and you
go, hey, we're good,we can we know how to do the
cart, we know how to dothe seat belt demonstration. We'll get you

(44:27):
where you need to go. Let'sgo. I need to know who these
delays just jumped right, just jumpedright in the more pressing question is,
as someone whose mother in law wasa flight attendant for I think ten fifteen
years, I know how clumsy sheis, so that's irregardless of this,
But how do flight attendance too,let alone, how do they become injured
so injured on the flight it's exactlyright, and they can't perform their duties.

(44:51):
My first inclination now is, unfortunatelyand sadly what we see on planes
happening, was there some kind ofdisturbance that they were trying to oh on
altercation? Okay? Possibly, yeah, I'd like I'd like to know both
sides of the story. What happenedto the originals were up and you know,
yeah cart fly twenty yards down theaisle, think disturbance, Yeah,

(45:13):
where they're sick, injured injured,it's set injured. But credit to those
two flight attendants and if you knowthem, and they're big Gopher fans,
obviously, if they're going to ChapelHill, I'm guessing somebody in the parent
and spare family out there knows whothey are, but we need to identify
them. They need to be Ithink they should be recognized at halftime of
homecoming. That's just me. Ithink they should be brought out on the
field. I think they should getwell, both of you. Oil should

(45:36):
be there, Jeff Ettinger should bethere, like everybody should be there.
They should get a nice ovation becausethey how many Gopher fans were probably on
that two twenty flight, how manypeople were trying to just get back home
so they could be with their families, go to work the next day.
And if not for these two heroicflight attendants jumping in and saying we've got
it, who knows when they wouldhave gotten out. Well, both of
you talking text more than people knowwith Mark Oyle, so I think you

(45:59):
two can set it up for them. We'll find they just have to identify
themselves to justin Guard or any ofthem, so you can tweet me at
Garzi if you know. But thatwas my favorite story of the weekend,
was I mean, they're of allthe good stories. Your urinal thing might
top it, Chipper being the biggestname on Franklin Street on Friday nights.
Let me know if anybody knows thoseflight attendants, because they should be recognized

(46:21):
publicly for their their brave service toget out of Raleigh, North Carolina.
All right, what do we wantto talk about? Do we want to
review some stuff or do we wantto preview the other Saturday night games?
Because while I'm in Evanston, andwhile Burns's and Evanston, Chip has already
said I'm DVR in the Golfer game. There's a lot of good games there
because you're gonna be watching Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Iowa at Penn
State. Also night games, whichwho's Tennessee plan. I'm sure they played

(46:44):
late night. I haven't seen whattime we play for the tough one for
them they got it was into pressbox riding and they have to sit there
and watch it. Now, there'sgood games, big week for college football,
and I'm not sure what the timethe Colorado Oregon game is, but
that one will be or they tobelieve the three touchdown favorite. I mean,
the best player in the field isnot going to play becauseted Kidney.

(47:05):
Yeah no, this is a youknow, that Wisconsin game last week was
some something I've never seen before. There's like twelve turnovers and they won by
yeah not much. Quarterback had whatsix George five interceptions and the six turnovers
in Wisconsin territory six turnovers. Onewas a turnover on downs. That game

(47:27):
could have been a three touchdown victoryfor Georgia Southern if they don't turn over
the ball six times in Badger Tarry, I've never seen a college football game
like that, or even I waafter the first quarters, down seven nothing,
they get that lightning delay. Unfortunately, it sounds like Luke Cliche their
best tight end. Yeah, he'sout for the year. He's up for
the year. It's going to bethe Eric All Express from Kade McNamara,

(47:51):
but a very Westy shaping up tobe. As we get closer and closer
to conference games every week, theWest looks as west it's ever been.
It's the lastiest of the West inthe final year. It's because no one
looks good. No, I mean, everybody looks pedestrian. It's kind of
been the theme for how many yearsnow. It's just it looks that way.
There's just I thought you were goingto finish. Yeah, no,

(48:16):
he was so disgusted. Yeah,it's an exaggerated sigh. Yeah, I
mean you look, Illinois loses athome. Illinois has been disappointed. Yeah.
Their quarterbacks got seven picks of thefirst two three weeks of the year.
Yeah, five takeaways for Penn State. They win in Champagne thirty to
thirteen. We've already mentioned the golfersobviously loses. The Syracuse gets crushed.
It gets, you know, twotouchdowns essentially at home. Nebraska got a

(48:39):
victory against Northern Illinois Matt Rules firstwin. Do you see, like Nebraska's
got four Like I think they hadthree more starters now out for the year,
including their starting running back. They'rehanged up. But on the Iowa
thing, they win forty one ten, and we know that through the first
two games they had not hit themagic Brian Ferren's threshold. And they're under

(49:00):
heat or scrutiny because they're rolling onthe PJ. Fleck less Western Michigan Broncos,
which horrible. They're gonna be luckyto win three games. And in
the fourth quarter, Rudy gets atouch the Rudy of the University of Iowa.
Some walk on fullback that never getsto play, rumbles in for a
touchdown. And what does everybody say, Well, they're trying to pump up

(49:22):
the average. They need to getto three twenty five. They were underneath
it the first two games, andnow they're just rolling up the score against
poor Western Michigan. Two things realquick. Number One, I don't believe
that it's give Rudy as more Rudy. But number two, this is why
you don't do this stupid contract. We've talked about it at the time.
It's terrible for everybody involved. It'sterrible for the fans. It's terrible for

(49:45):
Brian Ferrens. It's terrible for thiskid whose mom and dad probably drove eight
hours just to never see him play. A guy gets a touchdown and runs
it in and now all they're talkingabout as well, Brian just gave it
to him because he's trying to savehis job. The whole thing was preposterous
at the time, and so againI just leave. I'm just like,
I know, you have no sympathyfor any of this, not a shot.
I feel sympathetic to the humans involved, especially the kid who's like,

(50:08):
man, if I score it wrong, yeah I score, it's kind of
a good moment for me. I'mI have to, you know, work
on special teams. I'm the gunnerfor you know, three straight days every
week. I'm cramping up in practice. I never get any clock. I
might get my books paid for,and that's it. I just want to
be a hot guye And the onlything that people are talking about is well,
Brian and Kirk, they want tomake sure they get to three twenty

(50:29):
five, which is why the wholething was always stupid. Well, yeah,
because you're setting that up for tobe made fun of. Yeah,
and that's exactly I suppose they deserveit. Yeah, I suppose they deserve
it. Maybe maybe I'm coming overto you. I don't feel sorry for
you. I don't feel sorry foranybody. Well, I'm sorry that you
guys are heartless. I'm sorry thatI'm the only one you know that you
know has a little empathy for humanbeings. Okay, sorry that I'm the

(50:52):
carrying one and the parent is spare. It's the parent is spare. You
Well you didn't, you did kindof Well, you all already put the
health in the healthcare, so youmight as I'll care along with it.
Parent is spare and healthcare, andI care for all of you out there.
It's a good thing that the twobest games the Big ten are also
at six thirty this week. Thatyou needed to put four at six thirty
and only one at eleven am,that's fine, So stupid, I'm still

(51:15):
I will never get over there.I will never get over this. It
is ridiculous. Did you book yourflight already? Guess when you're flying in?
I think my flight that was funny. Yeah, I'm just trying to
make chips. There's one that landsright at three? There is? Is
that the one you're on? No? I think I took a new and
so I get in about one.Well, that's the one I was nervous

(51:37):
about. Yeah, you have enoughtime. Well I thought about getting on
that one lands at three, comeon, yeah, but I'm gonna do
the show. Well, I meanI would be there maybe, but it's
two. I can't do that likeburns it. You could, I could,
Yeah, you could. I justgotta be there by five ten.
I'm going in Friday night. Ohyeah, you gotta join me on the
pregame. I'm going in Friday night. I wish I could go. I
wish they needed to be like aneleven thirty flight. There a new Yeah,

(52:00):
I'm finn United. Maybe I'll dothat. Maybe I'll change it.
Yeah, they posted everything, soall chips flipping back between I think it's
ABC and Fox for Ohio State,Notre Dame and then Penn State and a
wide out against Iowa, and he'sgot dvring to see if a thing can
complete a long pass or not.Why couldn't it. I just I'm not

(52:21):
going to get over it. It'sridiculous. It's happened one time, Iculus,
twelve years, thirteen years. Idon't care. It's one time.
It's gonna be a nice night inEvanston. The get in price tickets as
low as eight dollars. I expectthat will go down. I expect that
to be goes a ticket, gofill any part of the stadium. Gophers
are eleven and a half point overunder for fans in attendance because it is

(52:43):
a night game. At eleven thousand, it's a good number. I'll say
over, yeah, I'll say over, but bare slightly. Yeah, you
may, you may get some andthere might be some gods. Yeah,
yeah. I think it's a concert. That was my theories. They're gonna
think it's like, you know, maybe Taylor Swift is playing Ryan Field and

(53:06):
we didn't hear about it. Let'sgo pop out, let's go see what's
going on your dream So he's inthe same field, is Taylor Swift?
That would be that would be swiftto compare. Wow. Now, I
don't know what ticket site they usehere at ESPN, but I mentioned the
get in price for Gophers Northwestern atRyan Field is eight dollars. Akron and
Indiana tickets are as low as elevendollars. You care to guess the get

(53:28):
in price according to this right now? For Ohio State at Notre Dame at
Notre Dame Stadium two hundred bucks twoseventy you are both off. According to
this, tickets as low as fourhundred and forty eight dollars? Yeah,
what's it? At Iowa Penn Statefor the white out? What would you
say? One hundred and fifty thousandpeople can get in there? Iowa?

(53:50):
Yea for the white out? Guysare gonna think I'm making it up?
What is it? Tickets as lowas one seventy five? You guys are
amazing. Anything else we want totalk about before we go? Melt Tucker's
on his way out. The universityeven notified that he's being fired. We
should talk about this. Actually,Michigan State said you're on your way out,

(54:10):
and Bruce Feldman says, PJ.Fleck stealing my material. I snuck
it in last week everybody was madat me and go for illustrated Like I'm
just it's just reality. Guys likeif they're if they're smart, they call
him. If they're smart, they'rethinking about him. Yeah. If if
you're a Michigan state and you're lookingaround like, Okay, we need somebody
who's going to clean up this program, run a professional operation, why wouldn't

(54:34):
you call him? Right? Imean, you'd be silly not to,
especially knowing the ties to the statehe had and his wife has. Like
it's the same thing we always do. Well, Lane Kiffin went to Jefferson,
he might want to come back here, Like, it's the same principle,
it's just being Michigan. It washe through he throughout Fleck, Leephold
and Mike elco which would make aton of sense. I think that one
makes a ton of sense. Icould see the Marshall head coach whose name

(54:58):
is escaping mirror now a lot ofcents. He also threw out the Dan
Lewis former Wisconsin. Yeah, that'sinteresting. It's gonna be a hot name.
Yes he is. You're right whenyou look at what they're doing.
But I'm gonna ask the same I'mgonna ask guards you the same question that
I asked Chipped down in the lobby. When was the last time it's a
current Big ten head coach left aBig ten program for another Big ten head

(55:23):
coaching job. Oh I was gonnasays conference Arkansas is not in the Big
ten yet, they're not in theBig ten yet you have the answer as
him, I don't even know whoit is. That's my kind of my
point here is I have a lotof skepticism because this Michigan State job isn't
Michigan, it's not Ohio State. But that's why it's good for PJ.

(55:45):
Because he can go in there anddo whatever he wants. Right now,
the one thing I do with likeyou know, it makes sense for like
recruiting and their budget and facilities andall those guys. It's a neck of
a lot more in Nil than Minnesotatoo. But in Nil you know geographical
ties, but no more divisions anymore. You're always going to live in the

(56:06):
shadow man. I don't think hecares. I think he likes being at
those places because he can do whathe wants to. He can't row the
boat in ann Arbor. You can'tgo to Columbus and go Hey, let's
row the boat. You can't doit. You can't do it in Notre
Dame. You can't. You probablycouldn't do it at USC like you have
to. It has to be ata place that like Minnesota, where you
can put your own stamp on.I think you could do that at a

(56:28):
place like Michigan State. I don'tthink he cares. I think he likes
being the underdog, the scrappy underdog. He certainly does when they beat Nebraska
because he talks about the ten milliondollars biout is nothing for Michigan State,
I wouldn't think, and especially becausethey're gonna save seventy nine million dollars because
they're trying to fire melt Tucker withcause and they're laying out specific clauses in
the contract of why they think theycan do it seventy nine million dollars.

(56:52):
That dude, unbelievable to not tokeep crassley, to keep it in your
pants publicly, privately, whatever that'sI was watching sports Center this morning and
Sports Center was talking about that whilemy nine year old was being his breakfast.
I'm like, oh boy, andthey cleaned it up. But I
don't need to explain phone sex beforeI drop a third grader off. So

(57:13):
we had to had to mute that, and that's what they said. So
anyway, that's where we are withmelt Tucker seventy nine million bucks to not
even to not even close the deal. You had did it over the phone.
Okay, Well now yep, theguy at a year, we're at

(57:34):
the fiftieth. Yeah, if yousee Burns e in the United Area.
Yeah, if you see him,go into the bathroom, follow him even
if you whether you have to useit or not, don't let him go
to the bathroom unscathed. I'm thinkingabout taking your flight just so I can
do it. Get on the intercomand go, Ryan Burns Skates fourteen is
now going to the bathroom right overthere by Chili's two. Everybody go.

(57:57):
Please tell him that he loved pairand a spare and the Gopher at least
to Yeah, it's the only airportrestaurant I could think of. I got
to see you guys. Great timein Chapel Hills. Great to see the
great to see again all these again. Man, it was awesome. Flights
were awesome, you guys on Fridaynight or even before the game on Saturday.
Just being able to meet a lotof the listeners was was awesome,
and we all appreciate you guys comingup to us and makes it a lot

(58:21):
easier. I especially like it whenyou do it in front of Mike Grim
and no one says hi to Grimand everybody just says guardsy, and then
he gets chippy with me and mybuddy Paul and Chops and you guys go
there. And because I know thefeeling when I used to walk around with
Darryl Thompson and all the older fanswould fawn over Darryl and I would just
be sitting there. Well, nowwe're doing that to Grim. So anytime
you see Grim and I together, make sure you say how much you love

(58:44):
me and just give him the heisman. I got one final question to ask
you. Okay, you went outto dinner Friday night, Yes, Yes,
at a Carolina barbecue place. Yes. And you ordered a chicken breast
grilled chicken. Yeah, party guards. I had the macaroni, I had
the collared greens. I heard thestory. I was so diss you didn't

(59:05):
you heard it from You didn't getMike Grim. No, no, Greeter,
oh Greeter. He wasn't there. It's it's it's lost and transn So
you went to a barbecue place Carolinagot a chicken breast. Well, here's
what I was, not pulled porkor fried chicken or anything. No,
because I heard someone else got chickennuggets. Yes, chicken fingers. It

(59:27):
wasn't chicken nuggets grown adult chicken tenders. Yeah. Well, here's what I'll
say. This was a recommendation bya long time North Carolina person because the
voice of the golfers, mic Grim, the restaurant was breast. No,
the restaurant was it's a three generationplace. It's kind of like Jack's,
and you know, I like thoseplaces. It's like Jack's in generation owned

(59:50):
only because we show up there andthe first thing we find out is they
don't serve alcohol. So half thehalf the group is beside themselves. I'm
on the fence. My hey, yeah, I can go on out without
slamming an ipa Like I'm not.I don't think I have an issue there.
Like it's annoying because you know,Friday night dinner, it's part of
the bit. We've got like twelvepeople with us, kind of the usual
people that always roll with us.And there was a lot of controversy in

(01:00:15):
the dinner, so that that setit off one way. And what saved
it was the woman who owned itcame out because she had set it up
with chops. So you guys bothknow and got the reserve it. And
what I thought when we got therewas how it was explained to me was
they just need to know how manypeople we have, and they're just gonna
cook up a bunch of stuff forus, and then we're all gonna pay

(01:00:37):
like twenty bucks and we're gonna getto try their favorite things. So I'm
like, that sounds great, thatsounds very cool, very different. That's
not at all what the place was. So I was you thought it was
family style. Well, they didhave family Style, but it wasn't the
and that was the other controversy.Grim got family Style, and then other
people were ordering things that were includedin the family Style and that was just

(01:00:58):
making Grim mad because he's like, you could get the family Style and you
could get all this stuff, andthey're like, I don't want all that
stuff. I don't want those sides. You can switch out the sides.
I mean, there's a lot oftension, But for me, what annoyed
me besides the booze part. I'mglad I'm not going to be there for
Friday night dinner this week because I'myeah, I'm not either, and so
not a lot of choices in Northbrookor wherever we're staying, so I'm going
in late. Yeah. But Ithought it was the way it was explained

(01:01:21):
to me in like July, waswe're going there. It's a barbecue place.
They're just gonna cook up a bunchof stuff and we're all going to
share it. Perfect. I don'thave to think that sounds awesome, like
what a cool place, not evenclose to what it was. What saved
it was the woman who runs itnow came out and thanked us for being
there and said, my grandma openedthis place. I've grown up here.

(01:01:42):
That's cool. So yeah, andthey had pictures of famous people on the
wall and stuff, so it wascool that way. But the so they
took Grim's head chap and on thewall. I think it was already there.
Yeah, I think he sent itbefore so he could show it.
But so it just and so,and I didn't really want I didn't know
what I wanted, like do Iwant to try so I try that.
So I just go, I'm justgonna eat healthy and I'm just gonna get
some grilled chicken and some collared greensand macaroni and cheese, and then I

(01:02:06):
had like fifty hush puppies because thatwas too so wash it down with Yeah,
it was just it was not whatwe thought it was going to be.
But that's you know, it wasthe food good, it was fine.
It was fine. The macaroni wasgood. Colors greens was good,
obviously were good. The hush puppyI just think I needed something because I
didn't have a beer. I wasjust funneling water and hush puppies. So
maybe I do have a problem.I don't know. But it was just

(01:02:28):
at least hearing the story now Ithink it has more content. Yeah,
okay, yeah it wasn't. Yeah, certainly you can't take Greeter's word.
Who got it from probably Grim becauseGrim was mad at everybody because they were
all salty and like this this wasa miss. We've had a lot of
hits. This one was a miss. I'm happy for the woman and her
family, Like that's very cool thatI like going. You know, we
do have a rule we try notto go to chains. We try to

(01:02:50):
go, specially go somewhere that youcan't go to here. Yeah, and
so we tried our best and itwas kind of like out of the way
and it was like twenty minutes toget back to Franklin Street and the whole
deal. So it was just, yeah, they can't all at I know
why you left me hanging at thebar. You're just annoyed one to go
home? Yeah, I was tired, Yeah, probably from all the hush
puppies, just the carbs just buriedan ipa and hush puffies used feeling bloated.

(01:03:14):
He wanted to go home. YeahI didn't, you know. Yeah,
I think I only had a beeror two at that bar. Had
a couple on the flight. That'swhy I tweeted at the Music City Bowl,
as you know, because the golferfans were packing the plane and like
my phone, I have eighteen messages? What what what I do? So
the group text as you guys aregetting on the plane. When we're texting

(01:03:37):
in that group message, yeah,I know you guys are in the air
because then guards he sends me aphoto his IPAs. I only asked for
one and the guy gave me twoand those were good, and I don't
remember. I want to verbade him. So let's go to text message because
I mentioned you Chipper, Oh youwant me to go to it? And
as I learned, uh in theSouth, or at least North Carolina,

(01:03:58):
if somebody looks at you and saysbless your soul or bless your heart,
it's usually not going to be verygood for you. Yeah, guards you
would, I say, after theI pas so, yeah. I sent
you a picture of the IPAs yousaid, why are you the way that
you are? The Michael Scott JeffI said, I only asked for one
and then you tweeted out. Chipsent one up to you, which there's
no shot. He knows how toconnect to the free Wi Fi so he'll

(01:04:20):
see these when you land. Chip. Did you know that? Chip?
Do you know how? I knowthey have wireless, but I just don't
do it. You know how?I put an airplane mode and I do
you know how to connect? Likeright now as we're sitting here in the
Kfan studios, could you connect us? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I
think yeah, yeah, I gottaset up. I know they have wireless

(01:04:41):
on air, but I just don'tdo it like you like to disconnect?
I like, just put the phonedown, put some music on, close
your eyes. But then I wakeup, or then we land and there's
thirty text messages from you guys Berncy. And I never stopped the conversation.
I know, I'm like, whathappened? We never stopped the conversation.
Just turns his phone back on.What does he say? Oh? What
did he do? Uh? Justturned my phone on after landing? What

(01:05:04):
did I miss? A lot?A lot a lot? Well, I
see the beers on there and like, man, yeah, and I screenshot
it and tweeted it out. Arethe conversation before that? Somebody got upset
about the green bubbles? That's me, Yeah, I am. It's a
little bit of Google pixel compared totheir iPhones. Yeah, and nobody's perfect.
I don't begrudge you for that, but you were really bitter at me

(01:05:25):
because I wasn't planning it. Iwasn't planning on putting my bag in the
overhead because I always get on lastno matter what. I don't like to
get on him. So yeah,so I'm usually on the aisle or whatever,
and so I just get on.I don't like sitting there and so
when I got on to the plane, the flight attendant was like actually standing
in my scene. She's like, you can put your bag right there.
I'm like, oh yeah, andI'm last. So I kind of wanted

(01:05:46):
to hustle panic like I did inthe bathroom. I did, and my
charger was up there, and I'mlike, I needed my charger because I
was at like forty five percent. And then it's only two thirty in the
afternoon, Chipper, but that's wherehe got And I did have to bring
like my portable charge thing with meout because you didn't start. I started
get down by two o'clock into theafternoon. I got a lot going on.

(01:06:08):
Man, it's taping a TV show, getting radio stuff done. Reading.
You ever plug it in when youget in the car, like in
between, I don't have I don'tnecessarily have a car charger all the time.
Just for the look of a disappointedfather, Chips Coggins, that should
be the next shirt. It's justChip's face looking at you like you forgot
to mow the grass, don't yeah, put the garbage up. Yeah,

(01:06:31):
So I was, And then Ididn't want to get up like I just
I like to just kind of stayout of the way, and you're texting
non stop with him and getting beersand like yeah, and so I mean
I wasn't like texting to get beers. I thought like I was calling,
you know. But yeah, allright, But I do know that there's
wireless onners. I just don't nextflight, I think you should try to
get on there. Why what amI gonna do? You never know.

(01:06:54):
I'm gonna call your bluff. I'mgonna say, you don't know how to
connect to it. So in Delta, you put into air, listen to
the fight that you put it in, you put it in near play mode,
and you connect. We're gonna takea flight. I'm gonna guess.
Okay, So you and I here'swhat's gonna happen for the Bowl game.
We're gonna sync up our flights, and I am going to put myself right

(01:07:16):
next to you, and I amgoing to see with my own two eyes
that you know how to connect tothe WiFi on the plane. We'll have
a bet on it. We'll havean ipa bet it works for me.
