Is Hell Real and Does It Really Matter One Way or the Other?

According to the Pew Research Center, belief in Hell remains significant among U.S. adults. Approximately 61% of Americans say they believe in hell. Belief in Hell is more prevalent among certain religious groups. For example, 82% of evangelical Protestants and members of historically Black Protestant churches affirm their belief in hell. Catholics and mainline Protestants also show a majority believing in Hell, though to a somewhat lesser extent. Only about a third of Jews and even fewer Buddhists, Hindus, and religious "nones" (this group classified themselves as unaffiliated with any religion) believe in Hell.

 

What Did Jesus Say?

 

Jesus said more about Hell than He did about Heaven in the Bible. "And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than having your two feet, to be cast into hell, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:43-48 NASB).

Is There Any Good News?

 

What is God waiting for? Why hasn't Jesus already returned to earth for the Second Coming? The answer is that God does not desire anyone to perish but wishes for everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 (NASB) says, "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance."
