SUMMARY

When your business starts to feel off, it’s often a sign that you’ve drifted from your “why.” In this thoughtful and gently playful episode, I talk about reconnecting with your purpose—what lights you up, what matters to you, and why you started in the first place.

Whether you’re feeling stuck in the daily swirl or just getting started with your business, this episode is your invitation to pause, reflect, and get back in touch with what makes your work feel meaningful. This is the first in a special series based on my Wayfind–Organise–Launch framework.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, welcome, or welcome back to Pattern Shift.
My name is Saskia and in thisepisode, as part of a series
where we talk about the Yavelframework, this episode focuses
on wayfinding, rediscoveringyour why, how to reconnect with
your purpose when your businessstarts to drift or,

(00:21):
alternatively, if you haven'tstarted your business, how to
figure out why you want to dothis.
This episode is part of aspecial series where I walk you
through the Javel businessframework Vol, standing for
Wayfind, organize and Launch.
Also, of course, vol is Dutchfor wool and the brand name is

(00:45):
Javelool, which is actuallytranslates to yes, wool, but in
German it means something likeyes or hell yes, and so it's a
play on a German word and Dutchwords and basically says hell
yes, choose wool.

(01:06):
So over time I kind of build aframework and I wanted my name
to reflect that framework.
Jevel is a playful name thatreflects my business philosophy.
The J and the A, which meansyes, in Dutch stands for joy and

(01:26):
action.
I believe that good businessstarts with what lights you up
and that it is built throughintentional steps.
I'm very much an action takermyself and so that part of the
brand Javel JA joy and actionreally fits brand Yawool, j-a,

(01:51):
joy and Action really fit.
And then W-O-L WOL or wool inEnglish, stands for Wayfind,
organize and Launch mythree-part approach to building
a sustainable, values-ledbusiness that actually fits your
life.
So if you're looking forclarity, ease and a more joyful
way to run your business, thisseries is for you.
Hey there, and welcome toPattern Shift, the podcast where

(02:12):
creative business owners likeyou learn to build a business
that's inspiring, fun andsustainable.
I'm Saskia de Vuyter, abusiness strategist, guide maker
and all-round creativeentrepreneur.
I help business owners in theneedle and fiber craft world,
just like you, navigate allthose icky words branding,

(02:34):
marketing and strategy in a waythat actually works for your
creative brain.
Here we talk about everythingfrom running a values-driven
business to simplifying yourmarketing without burning out.
Whether you're just startingout or looking to refine your
business, you're in the rightplace.
So settle in, grab a cup of tea, coffee or, you know, burich,

(02:58):
ladich, you do you, and let'sget started.
Today we're starting right atthe heart of it all.
Your why?
Because when your businessstarts to feel off track or when
you're just starting a newbusiness, reconnecting or
connecting with your purpose islike connecting to your inner

(03:18):
compass, and in this episodewe're going to explore how to
rediscover what really matters.
And when I say rediscover, that's the focus, because lots
of you already have a businessor you might be starting.
So whenever I say rediscover,I'm also talking about
discovering it for the firsttime, exploring what really

(03:43):
matters and why it is thefoundation for everything else
you build.

(04:17):
So let's start with the driftdrifting away from why you
started your business in thefirst place, the feeling that
your business still works on theoutside but something feels off
.
You're like going through themotions.
You slowly started makingdecisions based on what you
think you should be doinginstead of what actually lights
you up, actually gives you joy.

(04:38):
I've been there and for me itlooked like stepping into the
shop my yarn shop at the timeand basically just starting to
clean up until the firstcustomer came in and then,
before I knew it, it was the endof the day and I hadn't done

(05:01):
anything to actually move mybusiness forward or grow my
business.
I was just going through themotions of keeping things tidy
and helping customers and I kindof felt drifted.
I knew in the back of my mindthat what I needed to do is
spend some time reconnecting tomy purpose and all of that

(05:27):
joyful feeling.
But I didn't have the time orlet's say that differently I
didn't take the time becauseyou'll never have the time If
you just do, if you're just like.
I don't know what they werecalled In Dutch.
They were called the doers thelittle green man in the frag of
a rock that were building, building, building.

(05:49):
I think they were calledbuilders or something like that.
In Dutch they're called doers, the dooners, and they're just
doing.
It doesn't seem like they'regoing anywhere with it because
the freggles are constantlyeating the builds.
So, yeah, you want to get offthat feeling, you want to
reconnect to the joy of it all,but it usually doesn't really

(06:13):
happen all that.
Once when you notice this hashappened.
It's kind of tiny shifts.
You say yes to a project thatdoesn't quite align.
You tweak your messaging tosound more professional, but now
it doesn't really sound likeyou.
There was a time when I startedto say we at Yavo and it was

(06:36):
just me, and I think a lot of usdo this.
If you write your newsletter orif you're on social media, you
say we do this or that.
Well, in fact, it is just you.
Because it sounds moreprofessional.
I stopped sharing pictures ofmy children on social media and

(06:56):
showed only products, and, although I really still believe
that that was a good thing tostop sharing pictures of my
children for a while there Itook out all the human of my
business.
I was just showing the productsand there was no human there

(07:17):
anymore, just yarns and toolsand needles.
That wasn't really me, becauseI'm all about community and
connecting with people overcraft, over knitting.
My messaging wasn't inalignment with who I was as a
business owner, or my brand forthat matter, but I was building

(07:39):
it, I was getting to it.
I didn't at that time do astep-by-step to figure out what
my brand was, because that justgrew with time and I kind of
also started to work, work, work, work, work.

(08:00):
Like it was.
It was energetic and at times,of course, it was fun, but there
wasn't a direction to it.
Sometimes you can stop checkingin with your values because you
are so caught up in theday-to-day that you kind of
forget what's important to youand how you want to come across

(08:22):
as a business.
Now it's okay.
You can find your way back ifthis all sounds familiar to you
or if you are.
As I said, right at thebeginning of your business and
you want to figure out who youare, why you're actually doing
this.
It's quite interesting because,let's say, there's a person in

(08:44):
my life that is right at thebeginning of something, as a
friend, as a coach in training,as a consultant and a creative
business strategist, or whateverhat you want to put on my head.
There's so many ways I can helpin a situation like that.

(09:04):
But what I first said to themis discover why actually you
want to do this.
Why would you start something, and then you can decide what it
can look like.
Okay, so discovering orrediscovering your why is it's

(09:24):
not just a pretty missionstatement like a business-y type
of this is what we're all about.
It is more than that.
It is about.
It is more than that.
It is, as I say, the W in W-O-Lstands for wayfinding.
It's the kind of coaching thatI'm learning to do.
It is finding your way throughbuilding your business, growing

(09:46):
your business and your why isyour anchor, your compass, your
foundation.
It is what you use to makedecisions, to make your journey
easier.
It's allowed to evolve.
You don't have to have it rightaway.
It's something that grows, thatchanges, but it's really

(10:09):
important that you check in withyourself regularly to see if
you're still on the right path.
Who you were when you startedyour business might not be who
you are now.
That's okay.
That's just what growth is, andthis part of the wayfinding

(10:30):
stage is about pausing longenough to ask yourself a couple
of questions.
So, journalers, take your pen, take your journal and write down
these questions and, after this, take some time and write about
it.
Why did I start this in thefirst place, or why do I want to

(10:53):
start this in the first place?
What do I actually care aboutright now, and what kind of
business do I want to wake up toevery day?
What lights you up, what bringsyou joy, or what is so
important to you that you'rewilling to give it your time,

(11:15):
your love and your energy.
You don't need perfect clarity.
You just need to sit withyourself, feel your feels and
okay, bear with me here feelinto your body.
I know, I know some of you arelike, please, sauce, don't go

(11:35):
there.
But it's true, though.
It's really true, because whenyou're feeling a little nauseous
each morning, that's your bodytelling you something, that
something is off, and it couldbe well, something like medical.
But it could also be feelingnervous about not being on track

(11:57):
.
That happens to me.
I get nauseous, I get a stomachthat's confused, and if that
happens for a long stretch oftime, I need to listen to my
body and I don't care if thatsounds woo.
That's just how we are built ashumans.
We're not just a brain on legs,we are a fully functioning to

(12:20):
and fro brain body type unit.
So listen to what's going oninside you and ask yourself
those questions why did I startthis or why do I want to start
this?
What am I looking for?
What kind of feeling, what kindof goal, what kind of effect?
What do I actually care aboutin life in general, or right now

(12:44):
, in this moment?
And what kind of business do Iwant to wake up to every day?
Like imagining waking up?
Like imagining waking up,opening your eyes and going oh
yeah, I get to go do thisbecause of this.
So if you find it hard to get tothat feeling, really just sit

(13:07):
down with pen and paper and ifthat's hard, turn on your
recorder on your phone and justtalk into your phone.
Just find a friend, have somecoffee and say listen.
I've got three questions I needto work through and I need you
to help me with this.
And if that's hard, this isjust coming up.

(13:28):
I swear this wasn't planned.
I do have coaching sessionsavailable.
I'm still learning to be acoach.
That also means that it's at avery low cost, so if you want to
know more about that, just getin touch with me through the
usual links and whatever youmight call it in the show notes.

(13:49):
You don't need perfect clarity, you just need to listen to
yourself, your body, your mind, your everything.
Okay, back to the topic.
Here's a few things that helpme recenter.
So when I feel unrooted, I goback to a few simple things that

(14:10):
always help me out.
Of course, journaling whetherthat's bullet journaling or
morning pages or just writingwhat's in your mind.
It always helps to just let thedust settle, find a way to
organize all the yarn.
That's a tangled mess, and itreally really helps me.

(14:33):
Tangled mess, and it reallyreally helps me.
Another thing that helps torecenter is to be honest with
myself and look at what I'mavoiding.
Sometimes I feel resistance andit can point straight to
something that's out ofalignment.
So I think the best example ofthat is some use of social media

(15:00):
for me and how I look at thatand how I want or don't want to
use that in my business to feelavoidant and resisting stuff,
that I need to listen to thatand I started doing it and it

(15:22):
had some effects on my business, definitely, but it also brought
me a lot and it feels so muchbetter to be able to be myself
and to do the communication andmarketing part in a way that

(15:43):
fits me, which is a lot slowerand a lot more personal than
social media.
So that was a big one for me.
So look at what I'm avoiding, think about why that is, and
that will give you a really goodidea of what's out of alignment
.

(16:05):
Then another really cool thing Imean I think it's a really good
thing is talking to otherbusiness owners Hearing others
reflect on their business andwhat helps them and what brings
them in alignment with what theylove doing.
Just seeing their faces lit upwhen they talk about something

(16:26):
or when they have an idea.
That also helps me to get moreclarity.
So for me that means wheneverI'm doing a wins and woes
session, which is basicallygroup coaching in a way, with my
clients, it also helps me a lot.
So finding community, talkingto other business owners is

(16:49):
super, super helpful as well.
And you know, sometimes I justneed to go for a walk and leave
all the questions and trust thatthe answers will come when I'm
ready.
Lately I've been thinking a lotabout that and as we're getting
a puppy soon just a few weeksmore and two days we're visiting

(17:12):
again, so I'm very excited.
But learning about puppies andhow they grow and how they learn
, you can only train them for aminute or maybe a minute and a
half before they already need tosleep again and they need the
sleep, the time to really havewhat they learned in their brain

(17:35):
.
And when you do a longer set ofexercises and training, it will
overflow their mind and theywon't be able to learn as well
as they would have with ashorter training session and
then a longer amount of sleepingand rest.

(17:57):
And we know that that's thesame for humans.
I know that that's the same forme Every time when I have a
bigger break.
So in the summer and duringChristmas time I get my best
ideas and that's because I'm notconstantly putting new
information in my brain.

(18:18):
There must be a better way tosay that my brain.
There must be a better way tosay that.
So, yeah, sometimes a walk andthen trying not to listen to a
podcast but just walk or tocraft without also doing
something else super hard for me.
When I talk about it I alreadyget a little bit frustrated

(18:40):
because I just want to, I justkeep going, going, going.
But yeah, I should not do thattoo much, because I know that
when I allow myself space tothink and then I don't mean
practically actually think, butjust have a little bit of brain

(19:01):
quiet, and it's never quiet, Itell you, it's never quiet.
But perhaps that's quite aninsight.
Perhaps that's why I keep busyso much, because if I add new
stuff to my brain, I at leastkind of control it.
Okay, let's not get into that, that's something for coaching or

(19:23):
therapy, who knows.
Yeah, allow yourself some graceand some space and some calm
and quiet.
And if you can meditate or ifyou're open to meditate, that is
perfect to do that as well.
I, weirdly enough, have beenable to learn how to meditate,

(19:48):
not for a really long stretch oftime, but my challenge now is
trying to do it on a daily basisand getting it into a routine
one way or another.
So I'm working on that, butcomes all, all comes down to the
same thing allowing your brainto to come up with some answers

(20:12):
by itself.
Sometimes sounds like soundsreally easy, but it actually is.
But doesn't really sound likesomething you can trust, but it
doesn't really sound likesomething you can trust.
But I'm telling you, I'mtelling you, trust it, it can
really help.
Okay, on to the next thing.
I want to say again that yourwhy is your compass?

(20:35):
It is not a cage.
You are not restricted tocertain things or behavior,
because you have a certainreason for why you started your
business.
As I said before, it can and itshould evolve.
You are a whole person.

(20:56):
You grow, you shift, youexperience life, stuff happens,
and so your business has to growwith you.
Your goal is not to find arigid statement that never
changes.
The goal is to stay inconversation with your purpose
and to be in alignment with whatis important to you, to notice

(21:21):
when things feel off and then togently steer yourself back
towards what matters and what'simportant, and that is the
wayfinding.
So it's not about chargingforward with a detailed plan,
but navigating through,listening, noticing, adjusting

(21:45):
and being open and curious.
It's a mindset.
So here's another journalingprompt.
If you want to try this rightnow, a tiny check-in.
Here we go.
What's one thing I've beendoing in my business that no
longer feels like me?
Okay, you can pause and you canwrite, or you can come back to

(22:09):
this.
And then another question whatwould it look like to let that
go?
This can be super helpful, especially if you're in a season
of change like the one I'm inright now with my puppy and
everything shifting, feelinglike it's going to be upside
down.
My whole routines are going tobe different.

(22:31):
I love my routines.
Also, I have a hard timemaintaining them.
People who also have this.
You know what I'm talking about.
Sit with that for a while, write about it, and I hope that
really helps you.
So, just closing up, if you havefelt a little bit foggy, unsure

(22:53):
where you're headed next, justtake a break, pause.
Come back to your why, even ifit's messy.
Back to your why, even if it'smessy, even if it's half formed,
let a quiet voice inside youremind you why you started in
the first place.
And in the next episode we willmove into organize the O in

(23:16):
Yavol and we'll talk about howto make space in your business
to actually support your valuesand your energy, and this in a
compass stuff that we all talkedabout today.
That's where it all begins.
Thank you so much for listening.
