you from growing isn't strategyor marketing, but actually your
own depletion?

until it's too late, and that isthe non-negotiable need for
self-care, not as a luxury, as aleadership strategy.

close to it, this episode willfeel like an exhale.

boundaries and your brilliance.

(01:22):

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Welcome back to the Pilates Business Podcast.
I'm Saren Glanfield and I'm soglad that you're here with me
today.
I am on coffee cup number two, which means I'm ready to talk
about this topic exactly, and Ithink that it's something that
we often ignore, avoid, don'ttalk about enough in the
boutique fitness world.

(01:53):
Maybe it's because, day in, dayout, we're trying to, or what
we do is wellness, well-being,health, movement and all the
things that are helping otherpeople to feel better, stronger
and more energized, but perhapsyou are not in that place.
Perhaps you are in a placewhere you are depleted of energy

(02:14):
.
Are you tired or exhausted andperhaps dancing with burnout?
Now, if you're like a lot ofthe women that I work with, you
didn't open your studio tobecome a spreadsheet wizard or
do a lot of late night adminmarathons.
You started because you lovewhat you do, you love the method

(02:35):
, you love the movement, and youprobably wanted other people to
experience that too.
You wanted to make a differencewith what you knew was possible
, with what you're teaching, andyou're teaching from your
difference with what you knewwas possible, with what you're
teaching, and you're teachingfrom your heart, and you're
giving your soul to what you do,to creating a space where you
can share this love of movementwith others, where your

(02:55):
community also gets toexperience this amazing joy that
comes from being healthy inyour body and being stronger,
and be more connected and moregrounded right.
But somewhere along the waymaybe your business kind of took
over and so that balance thatyou perhaps once had or want to
have is no longer or has neverbeen there, because maybe your

(03:19):
days are packed with teachingclasses, fixing issues,
responding to team messages, subbing, chasing down missed
clients and maybe, just maybe, trying to squeeze in that little
bit of extra marketing.
Hey, why not sprinkle that ontop right and you and your
workout practice, your self-care, your downtime, your evenings,

(03:43):
your morning meditation.
That's a nice idea for maybesomeone else.
Maybe that's what you tell yourclients to do, maybe that's
what you talk about in yourmarketing, but maybe that's not
what is happening in your world.
And the truth is that yourstudio can't thrive, it cannot
grow, it cannot be energized ifyou are running on empty.

(04:04):
It cannot grow.
It cannot be energized if youare running on empty.
And burnout doesn't just affectyou, it actually affects
everyone around you.
It's a trickle down effectthrough and through.
It affects your team, itaffects your clients and it
generally affects your businessgrowth.

(04:24):
When I see studio owners andbusiness leaders take time out
of their business and truly taketime out, I don't mean like
going away and then working onyour business.
I mean truly take time off.
You come back to your businesswith more energy, with more
enthusiasm, with moreinspiration and probably with a
lot more of an open mind aboutwhat's possible.
Right, you might even be alittle bit more optimistic about

(04:45):
your growth and all thepotential that's in your
business.
I know, I certainly feel thatway, and so, although we cannot
take, you know, a vacation everyother week wouldn't that be
nice?
There are some things that wecan do to reclaim our energy, to
recenter ourselves and perhapsreally define what you need in

(05:06):
order to be successful over thelong term as a studio owner Not
someone who is just surviving, but someone who is truly
enjoying your business and thatyou're thriving within it.
Now, one of the things thathappens is that we don't often,
we don't always know when we'reat the point or on the edge of

(05:30):
burnout.
Right, it doesn't always looklike lying on the floor crying.
Right, sometimes it looks likejust being resentful of your
schedule, right, being resentfulof that client, being resentful
and not knowing how to fix it,it's, it's, there's this perhaps
that sort of deep feeling therethat you have towards your
clients, because they get towork out, maybe, and you don't,

(05:52):
or that teacher that doesn'twant to work on a Tuesday night
and so you have to and and and.
So that resentment is oftensort of a I would, an indicator
perhaps that you're on the wrongside of this coin.
Perhaps you find yourselfsometimes snapping at your team
or even your loved ones, eventhough you adore them, because

(06:14):
you're exhausted.
Maybe you find less excitementand joy from teaching and you
don't have that spark like youused to, right?
And maybe you thought more thanonce about throwing in the
towel completely, not becauseyou don't love what you do,

(06:35):
because it's just because youcan't see a way forward.
That isn't just more of thesame.
Now, this is pretty familiar andthe reality is, is that where
you're at right now, it's not,and if this is feeling like
you're feeling, it's not the endright, it's not a failure, it's
the world sending you a message, okay, and a very wise one,

(06:59):
right?
Because it's really this?
Is your nervous system reallyasking you to pause and to pay
attention, to stop sacrificingyourself for the very business
that was supposed to give youthe world, to set you free, to
give you freedom and joy andeverything that you want, right?
And so, instead of poweringthrough, I would encourage you

(07:23):
to choose to listen, and whenyou do that, it's not a weakness
.
It's actually a very wise thingto do, because taking some time
for you, setting boundaries foryou, isn't about being weak as
a leader.
It's actually a prerequisitefor sustainable leadership.
Being aware of what you need isimportant for you to be able to

(07:49):
show up as your best self inyour business, and so what would
change for you if you honoredthose needs with the same care
that you give to your clientsright Now?
One of the most common trapsthat I see with studio owners
and this is, I would say, truefor many entrepreneurs, business
owners and especially womenwho've started their own

(08:12):
businesses and perhaps been thatsolo teacher for a while is
that we often kind of overlapourselves and our business, and
there is not necessarily aseparation between the two.
Right, and so if your businessor your studio is not super
successful, then that means thatyou are failing right.

(08:34):
If a client leaves, it'sbecause you are not your
business.
You are a whole human beingwith a body, with a nervous

(08:57):
system and with needs, and yourbusiness is an expression of
your gifts, of your knowledge,of your expertise, and not a
measure of your worth.
One of the most powerfulmindset shifts that you can make

(09:17):
as an entrepreneur is to let goof this sort of entanglement
that combines and puts youtogether always with your
business, because what happensis when you can let go of these
two, when you can separate thetwo, it frees you up to lead
without losing yourself in it.

(09:39):
So when we think about ourbusiness as separate and
distinct from us, right thatyour success can happen
regardless of the success ofyour business.
What boundaries, would you say, need to be in place so that
your business can continue togrow without draining you?
How can you build a businessthat genuinely, truly supports

(10:04):
you and what you need?
Now, the part that no one tellsyou is that prioritizing
self-care actually makes youmore profitable, more successful
, and this is because ofsomething I already mentioned
earlier, which is that you get alot of clarity around, rested,

(10:24):
when I've slept well, when I'vegot my movement practice in when
I've been able to sort of bevery present in my day to day.
I am a lot more.
I feel a lot more positiveabout not just my business, but

(10:47):
a lot of things in life.
Right, and we're human beings,we're not machines, so we cannot
expect to show up every singleday as the same.
You know, in the same way thatlife happens outside of our
studio, things happen, we arepulled by lots of different
things happening in our lives, and so we need to make sure that

(11:07):
, in order to show up as ourbest selves, we're making sure
that we're taking care of whatwe need to be able to do that.
And some days we will stillhave perhaps a little less sleep
than we need.
Maybe we'll need that extracoffee, maybe we'll need to take
some time off in the afternoonto perhaps push something else
to the next day, right.
But what we know is that if wecan take care of ourselves and

(11:31):
we know how to do that, then youbecome a lot more clear about
what you need to focus on inyour business.
Creativity flows when yournervous system is calm.
I know for me this is 100% true.
I see more opportunities, I ammore confident, I am happier,
right.
These are all things that mostof us feel that we need, and

(11:54):
what also happens is that youfind solutions to the small
things that come up when yourtank is not empty and your
energy, when you show up in yourbusiness as your best self.
It's contagious.
So when you are grounded, youare joyful, you are present,
your team feels it too, yourclients feel it and your

(12:15):
business feels it.
The most successful studios arenot run by martyrs.
They're run by women who knowhow to protect their energy
right Like it's sacred, becausetruly it is.
So.
Instead of asking how can I domore, how can I get more done
there's not enough hours in theday, how do I make more time Ask

(12:36):
what do I need in order to leadwith more joy?
Okay, now, I know this is alittle bit of a different
approach than what you might beused to hearing from people like
me who talk about business andmarketing growth, but what I

(12:58):
know to be true is that you haveincredible gifts to give to the
world, to share with yourcommunity, and if you're at the
point where you're feelingresentful, if you're at the
point where you are feeling likethis is not enjoyable for you,
then you're more than likely toshow up in your business in a
way that doesn't encourageothers to show up as their best
selves and you're probably goingto make, perhaps, decisions

(13:22):
that are not as powerful as theycould be, and so it is
unsupportive of your businessgrowth.
So what happens sometimes, andwhat I've seen, is that for
those studio owners who don'thave a lot of structure, who
don't have the support behindthem of people who say, yeah,
you don't have to reply to thattext message you got from your

(13:43):
client at 10 o'clock at night.
That's okay, yes, you candelegate that task.
No, you don't have to do thosethings.
Then you're able to really getfocused and you feel okay with
saying no, with reprioritizingthings, with delegating things,
and you take away a lot of thepressure and a lot of the
emotion and entanglement thatcomes with being the leader,

(14:06):
being the boss and being thedriver of your business, and
sometimes you don't even realizewe're burning out until we have
already passed some of thewarning signs.
Now, I've been a business ownerfor well over 15 years myself
and you know there have beenseasons where there have been a
lot of ease and flow in mybusiness and there's been

(14:28):
seasons where there has been alot of struggle and angst and
anxiety for sure, and so one ofthe most important things is
that we're aware of how we arefeeling about our business,
feeling about our impact andaware of what that means for us
and how we show up.
So if you start the day you knowtired, if you are not excited

(14:54):
about being in your studio, ifyou have stopped doing all of
the things that you know fillyour cup right, like maybe your
own movement practice, perhapsbeing around other teachers,
perhaps teaching others that youreally like to teach, or even
outside of the studio, journaling, taking time for
yourself to do something nicefor yourself that you enjoy

(15:17):
taking walks, quiet time, reading things that you know
energize you right Then that's asign that perhaps it's time to
perhaps incorporate those intoyour more regular schedule.
If you find yourself operatingin a fully reactive mode and
you're constantly putting outfires and you keep adding more

(15:38):
to your plate and you're notsaying no, right, and that's
also a sign that you're in aplace that's only going to lead
to perhaps more stress, overwhelm, anxiety and
eventually complete burnout, andmaybe you don't even know what
has gone well in your businessbecause you're so busy rushing

(15:59):
onto the next thing that youhaven't even stopped to
celebrate what you haveaccomplished and achieved.
So if you've nodded yes to morethan one of these, my friend,
it is time to pause, to resetright and to take a moment for
yourself.
You have that time.
You can take that time, even ifit's just a 10 minute walk, and

(16:23):
leave the phone behind right.
So this isn't about overhaulingyour whole life.
You just need to take one step, one action that's going to give
you a little bit of space, that's going to free up your
time for something else, butalso perhaps just free up some
mental space as well.
Now the part that's going tochallenge every high achieving

(16:46):
part of your brain, because Iknow you guys are all high
achievers, and that is that theless you do, the better your
business truly becomes.
Because when you stop trying tohold it all together, you can
also allow and facilitate yourteam and the people around you
to rise up.
Your systems can stretch, yourclients will become more
confident in you as well.

(17:07):
You're not the glue holding itall together.
You are more like the conductorguiding the orchestra right,
and when you give yourselfpermission to rest.
Give yourself permission todelegate, give yourself
permission to completely unplug.
You don't just avoid burnout, but you actually invite in
growth.
So perhaps think about two orthree things right now that

(17:32):
someone else could own.
Someone else could do right Ifyou trusted yourself enough to
just let go okay.
So I hope I've given you somefood for thought here today.
We've talked about the realcost of burnout, and truly it is
real.
I think, with all of the studioowners that I have worked with
over the years, this issomething that is common at some

(17:53):
season in your business life, right, and I want you to
remember that you are not yourstudio.
Your self-care is a very smartbusiness move, not a selfish one
.
In order for you to show up andbe your best energetic self in
your studio, to be able todeliver an experience for your

(18:15):
clients that they feel empoweredby, you need to also show up as
your best self.
So it is, in fact, a leadershippractice, and so think about
some of the signs that you mightbe experiencing in your life if
this is something that you'reconcerned about, and perhaps
make some changes before youreach the edge, and the one

(18:37):
thing that I hope that youremember is that your business
will only grow to the extentthat you are willing to take
care of the person leading it,and that person is you.
So maybe that next step lookslike blocking off one
non-negotiable hour each weekjust for you to do anything
Reading a book, painting, takinga walk, whatever fuels you and

(19:02):
perhaps brings down that stresslevel a little bit, brings down
that anxiety level a little bit.
Maybe it's finally saying no tosubbing that extra class, to
teaching that extra class, toteaching that client who can
only work out with you on acertain day and a certain time,
or maybe it's booking an entireweekend off the grid.
Whatever it is, I want you totake that step, not next quarter

(19:26):
, not next year, not when thingscalm down, but now, because
this is how you build asustainable business, this is
what success actually feels like.
