(01:24):
I'm so glad you're here.
And if you have been followingalong for a while, or listening
along for a while, welcome back.
I'm glad you're here.
I managed to pick up a littlecold virus from one of my
children over the last week andI'm still bearing the brunt of
it a little bit.
I'm feeling much better, but Isound terrible.

(01:44):
So stay with me and I'm sorryfor this, but I didn't want to
miss sharing this episode withyou, because here on the podcast
, this is where I talk allthings, not just business and
marketing, but all things thatgo into developing and growing
your business.
It's for studio owners whoreally love what they do, who

(02:07):
love the impact that theirbusiness makes on their clients,
who loves movement and wants toshare it with more people.
And today we're zooming in onsomething that I think doesn't
often get enough airtime wedon't talk about enough.
To be honest, in this world,we're often very focused on
strategy, focused on the tacticsand the tools and the latest

(02:28):
and greatest software, but Ithink one of the biggest things
that really sets successfulbusiness owners apart from those
who struggle is mindset, is theentrepreneur mindset, and the
truth is that most of us go intobusiness because we find
something that we love.
You love to teach right.
You're passionate about helpingpeople move better, feel better

(02:50):
and live healthier lives.
And when you decided to do that, no one handed you a manual
that said oh, by the way, if youwant to actually run a
profitable business, asustainable business, you need
to start thinking like a CEO.
And here's how you do thatright.
So what happens more often isthat you kind of learn by doing

(03:11):
Some folks stay stuck in thatteacher mode, or stay stuck
mostly in that teacher mode, andoccasionally step into the
leadership role, occasionallystep into a management role,
occasionally step up into thatCEO role.
We hustle, we people please andwe push through right.
We figure out how to handlestaff drama or slowdowns because

(03:33):
of seasonality or cancellationsand cancellation policies, and
somewhere along the way perhapswe just sort of think, okay,
this is how it it is, this ishow it's meant to be, but it's
not.
And what I have found fromworking with hundreds of studio
owners over the last decade plusis that there is often a

(03:54):
difference between the studioowner who is constantly sort of
on the edge, right on the vergeof burnout, who is just feeling
overwhelmed constantly, and thestudio owner who is confident,
who is calm, who is leading andprobably also taking every
Friday off.
And the difference, the biggestdifference.

(04:15):
It starts with mindset, and soI want to clear something up as
we dive into this, to make surewe're kind of all on the same
page about what having anentrepreneurial mindset does and
doesn't mean.
I think that there is this sortof idea that well, perhaps to
start off with, you might noteven consider yourself an
entrepreneur, and if you own abusiness and you started a

(04:37):
business of any sort whetherit's online or in person or a
combination of both you haveyour own business and you are an
entrepreneur.
And that doesn't mean that youhave to work 24-7.
That doesn't mean that you haveto live on caffeine although
sometimes it's helpful and itdoesn't mean that you have to
keep coming up with more ideasand new things and new offers

(04:59):
and new promotions and newclasses to add, and truly that
is not where I see the mostsuccessful studio owners sitting
when it comes to their mindset.
The entrepreneur mindset in ourspace is about perspective and
it often is a shift that happens, and I think that the earlier

(05:20):
you can make this shift on yourbusiness journey, the better,
and it is the shift that goesfrom being the one who thinks I
need to do all the work to thethought that is, I need to build
the thing that does all thework.
So you go from being the engineturning right to building an

(05:43):
engine that turns, and you knowI like to help studio owners to
build their businesses like anengine right and that it runs
really smoothly, with all of thedifferent parts that work
together to help it to reallymove to grow right.
And a lot of folks thatstruggle in business are folks

(06:05):
who never quite make that shift.
Perhaps you feel like you can'tgive up teaching as, or you
think that you have to give upteaching.
It's not the case, by the way.
You can still still teach ahundred percent.
Um that perhaps you get stuckin doing all the things.
If your schedule is full andyour revenue is still stuck and

(06:25):
you still want to grow, there issomething that has to change.
And if you've worked for someoneelse and then you went to open
your own studio, you might stillfind yourself in kind of like
an employee mindset.
You might be that person who islooking for someone else to
sort of to, to, to, to give youthat task list right.
And employees are types ofpeople who follow task lists,

(06:47):
whereas entrepreneurs are typesof people who design the list,
who hand out the list.
Right, they are stepping back.
They're making decisions thatcreate more time or more freedom
or more money in their businessMaybe not immediately, maybe
later on.
And so the question is whenyou're thinking about your

(07:08):
business, are you making dailydecisions like someone who is an
employee, or are you makingdaily decisions like someone who
is a visionary, a leader, a CEO?
Because if every hour of yourday is tied to you showing up
and delivering, then that is notleading your business like a
CEO.
That is creating a job foryourself, where you are the

(07:31):
employee doing the job.
And you know, I want to justreally clarify and sort of
repeat what I mentioned earlier, which is that the shift doesn't
mean that you have to stopteaching and doing the things
that you love or doing thingsthat you don't like doing in
your business, but it means thatyou need to be able to step

(07:52):
into that role, into thatleadership role, and look at
your business as all of thesedifferent moving parts that need
your care and attention, butthat you may not be doing the
things in each part of thosebusiness, and so you want to
build a business that works foryou, right?
Not a business that you areworking for and not a business

(08:16):
that even, potentially, constantly needs you in it all
the time.
So there are some, often thereare some sort of sneaky beliefs
that actually kind of keep youstuck in this place.
And this is very normal, um, ifyou think some of these things,
because you know, as humans, weare biased to keeping ourselves
safe, and keeping ourselvessafe often means holding on to

(08:39):
things that we think um andholding onto them as um to keep
us safe, cause we know what thatfeels like.
And so sometimes we're evenholding on to beliefs that we
don't even realize we're holdingon to, although we're operating
from that place.
So you might not be walkingaround saying I can't grow, my

(08:59):
business can't grow, but if youbelieve that no one else can
teach like I do, my clients willleave if I raise my prices or I
can't afford to hire any helpright now, then all of those
thoughts are truly shaping yourresults and the reality is that

(09:19):
your business can't outgrowthose beliefs, and most of us
picked up these stories alongthe way without even realizing
it.
Maybe it came from a pastexperience, maybe you saw
another studio fail andinternalize that playing small
is safer.
Maybe you never had a mentorshow you what's possible, Maybe

(09:39):
you've never been aroundsuccessful studio owners.
But when you operate from thatfear-based beliefs, even just
very subtly, you build afear-based business, one that
probably never scales, onethat's very reactive and
probably one that willeventually completely exhaust
you.
So I want you to kind of thinkabout, get curious about your

(10:03):
thoughts this week.
Think about your thoughts andthink about whether or not there
is a belief that you areholding onto right now that
might be keeping you safe butmight also be keeping you stuck.
And what if that belief isoptional?
So have a little bit of a thinkabout the way that you're

(10:23):
thinking about your business.
When you discover some of thesethings, it is truly so
incredible to perhaps give you.
It might give you theopportunity to perhaps shift
some of these beliefs, to changethe way you think about your
business, and that can be sopowerful for your business
growth.
So we certainly want to makesure we're aware of the thoughts

(10:45):
that are holding us back, thethoughts that we have about our
business or about success in ourbusiness and what that looks
like and, I think, the otherpart of having a strong
entrepreneurial mindset is theidea of what it really takes to
be successful, and I think thatwhen we focus only on the

(11:07):
successes, I think we're settingourselves up for failure.
And so I know that sounds a bitof a strange thing to say, but
what I mean by that is, if youonly focus on your success and
you're not willing to toleratesome challenges along the way,
you're not willing to tolerateperhaps failing in some things
or things not going as well asyou want, then you will never

(11:31):
actually reach success, becausebehind every successful studio
is a series of bumps in the road, challenges, things that come
up, things that they had topivot away from towards.
There's always, as I always say, there's always something that
comes along and I get it.
Failure sucks, it really does.
A new instructor doesn't workout.
You raise your rates andsomeone leaves right.

(11:54):
These are all things thathappen when you are building a
business, and I think theperspective that you can get,
especially when you surroundyourself with successful studio
owners, really opens up youreyes to what it's really like to
be an entrepreneur, becausefailure isn't the opposite of
success, it's more like part ofyour success.

(12:17):
It's part of the process, um,and you know, it's a bit like.
It's a bit like toleratesfailures and challenges is a bit
like working out.
Right, you don't get strongerby avoiding discomfort.
Right, you're going to getchallenged along the way and
you'll get stronger through itand because of it.
And so if every time a clientdidn't want to take that next

(12:41):
step, instead of asking orthinking, oh my gosh, it's
because of me, am I a goodteacher, or was it my prices?
You start thinking about okay, well, what data did I just get?
What can I review the customerjourney?
Can I think about where theremight be opportunities for me to
improve what I'm doing here?

(13:02):
And that's what entrepreneurswill do.
They will approach it with agrowth mindset of what
information can I learn fromthis experience?
And then how can I come backstronger?
And that's how you buildresilience, that's how you
innovate and that's how you stoptaking every dip in revenue or
unsubscribed email completelypersonally.

(13:22):
So you know, when you look atany successful studio owner,
they have a very high tolerancefor challenges.
They expect them, and I have tosay this was something that I
learned myself a long time agoand I think that it has served
me quite well.
And it is a tough pill toswallow, for sure.

(13:42):
But I know that starting.
You know, when I sit down at mydesk on a Monday, I know that
there are going to be thingsthat work great for me and there
are going to be things thatcome along that are going to not
be so great, and we have to bejust curious about what those
things will be and willing tolearn as they come up.
So the next time you'rewondering and thinking, is this

(14:05):
going to work?
Is it not going to work?
Think about, am I willing tolean into this process?
Am I willing to ride the wave?
Am I willing to, when somethingdoesn't work, come back,
revisit and learn from it?
Okay, let's talk about thecalendar next, because at some
point this hits everyone.

(14:27):
Okay, your schedule is full.
I could feel you, I everyone, Imean, I don't know someone who
isn't busy with, especially whenyou're an entrepreneur and
especially if you are also acaregiver or a parent.
Um, you are learning as ateacher.
You're learning as a businessowner.
You're maybe managing yourschedules and other people's
schedules and there's a lotgoing on in your world, right,

(14:50):
and it probably feels likeyou're doing a lot, but maybe it
feels like your bank accountisn't growing because of it, and
the reality is often that'sdown to the way that you're
using your time.
And so what we know is that ifyou are working for someone else
and you have a shift that goesfrom 8am to 12pm and you've got
clients during that time, you'refilling your time with clients

(15:15):
as a teacher, but entrepreneursare investing their time.
So a mindset shift looks likethinking about time and what
return you're going to get onthat time, and thinking about
where is your time not just yourtime, but also your energy and
your effort best placed for yourbusiness?

(15:37):
Are you spending multiple hoursa day putting together that
reel because you're not toocomfortable putting that
together and you're trying tofind the right thing when you
could be delegating that andcreating months worth of content
in those two hours anddelegating the creation of all
of that to someone else whocould be far quicker at it,

(15:57):
perhaps enjoy it more thanperhaps you do and probably get
a better return on that timethat you have right.
And so there are things thatonly you as a CEO can do in your
business and there are thingsthat you can delegate to others.
And so when you start to thinkabout okay, where can I add
capacity in my schedule?
It's not about necessarilytaking things off of your list

(16:20):
of to-dos.
It's about how can I takethings that I'm doing already
and move them to someone else'scalendar potentially right.
Or how can I take off somethingthat isn't actually giving me
any return at all.
So have a think about what is onyour calendar for next week.
Are these things that arehelping your business to grow,
are they things that aremaintaining your business, or

(16:42):
are they things that aredraining you and your energy?
And again, having awareness forthis is going to be a total
game changer, because we don'twant to keep you busy, we want
to keep you leading.
So each of these ideas I justshared with you is a bit of an
invitation, a chance to reallythink about how you're operating

(17:03):
right now and perhaps ask isthis serving the business that I
really want to build?
So, whether it's your beliefs, your fear of failure or your
time management this is notabout judgment, by the way I
want to empower you to becomethe business leader that you
want to be, and it it oftenstarts with your mindset and

(17:26):
when you perhaps discover howyou can shift some of your
mindset, you'll find that yourstrategies might start to work a
whole lot better.
So quick recap.
I just want to give you a quickrecap.
We talked about the mindset of asuccessful entrepreneur and
it's not about pushing harder,it's about being smarter with

(17:49):
the way that you think.
It's about your beliefs and thebeliefs that you have about
your business and your businesssuccess and your business growth
.
And so when you are aware ofwhat you're thinking, it can
help you to perhaps shift someof the way that you're thinking
about your business and perhapsthat will lead to the better

(18:10):
results and more of the resultsthat you want.
And I have to say you know thisis something that is a practice
.
It's not like a one and donething.
It's a shift that doesn'thappen overnight and it's
something that we have tosometimes sort of train
ourselves to do on an ongoingbasis.
But I do recommend that if youwant to build a business that

(18:31):
works for you, not the other wayaround, then you have to have
the right mindset.
Got you thinking do you seewhat I did there?
And you are ready and you wantto really, really, really nail

this and step into that CEOmindset, but you want a little
