And if you're new here andasking what's Mojo, well, mojo

self-worth where you're likethis unstoppable force of nature
(00:31):
.
You know that feeling you getthat makes you just want to

can have that feeling everysingle day.
You see, I think I've crackedthe code to being happy.

the day, possibly to an annoyingdegree.
(00:53):
But hey, you know what?
I wasn't always this way andI'm not going to flex, but I
have had multiple breakdowns onmultiple continents and in two
languages.
Just three years ago, my wholelife was a dumpster fire, and
today I'm better than I've everbeen.
But how, you ask?
Well, by paying attention andliving with more intention.
(01:16):
And I've created the Self-LoveFirst Aid Kit, and it's full of
amazing tools that help me levelup, navigate life and have that
main character energyeveryone's talking about.
And I'm not here to gatekeep.
In fact, it is my mission tohelp you tap into your best
stuff and remember that youalready have everything you need
(01:39):
to live your life on your ownterms.
So settle in.
We're here for some positivechange, so let's dig in to where
your mo on your own terms.
So settle in.
We're here for some positivechange, so let's dig in to where
your mojo meets the road.
In today's episode, I'm gonnareview our mantra for the week
and then we're gonna dig intotoday's main topic, and that
topic is morning mojo how tostart the day with mojo intact
(02:02):
and how our choices in themorning impact our whole life.
Yep, this episode is going tobe emotional and a game changer.
We're going to take yourmorning routine and turn it into
your superpower.
But, plot twist, we're not onlytaking it on the road, but we
are taking this podcast overseasand shaking things up once
(02:22):
again.
That's right.
Today's episode is coming toyou in between bites of
croissants and sips of wine.
I'm back in my former hometownof Nantes, france, and I can't
wait to tell you about it.
So you stick around and I'mgoing to make sure that you're
glad that you did.
Let's get started with today'smantra and get tuned in, tapped
(02:45):
in and turned on.
Hello and welcome to the Rubyepisode of Pocketful of Mojo.
That is right, it is the 40thepisode of Pocketful of Mojo.
I'm super pumped.
(03:06):
Once again, I'm Steph, I am yourMojo Maven, your emotional
Sherpa, and I'm so glad you'rehere Now.
Let it be noted am I atherapist?
No, I am not.
Do I have a degree inpsychology?
Also, no, I'm a flawed humanand a recovering people pleaser,
just like you, who's figuredout how to tap into our best
(03:29):
stuff, and I want to reflect allyour awesomeness back to you
and hook you up with someinspiration and some motivation
so that you can live the lifeyou love.
Say it with me and love thelife you live.
So we're going to start bydigging into today's mantra, and
that mantra is I choose to maketoday count with positivity and
(03:50):
grace.
Yes, okay, this is perfect.
This is a juicy one, so let'sgive it a squeeze.
I choose to make today countwith positivity and grace.
Count with positivity and grace.
Now, the only thing I love morethan an I am.
(04:10):
Mantra is an.
I choose mantra because itinstantaneously invokes this act
of choices and when it comes tochoices, that implies that we
are living with awareness, andthis is absolutely where we want
to be.
We are living with awareness, and this is absolutely where we
want to be, especially at thetop of our day.
I choose, I choose Like.
This removes our role as asimple actor on the stage of
(04:33):
life.
We are the main character andwe are also the author.
So the start of this mantraputs the responsibility, the
accountability, the power rightin your hands where it belongs,
and that's when we're no longerat the whim of life to tell us
how things are going to go.
It comes with some new feelings.
(04:55):
It can be scary being in chargeof owning everything that
happens, and that's normal tofeel.
But remember, not everything inthis life is in our control.
But when it comes to how westart our day, that is 100% in
our court.
So we get to choose what ourfirst thoughts are, how we
(05:15):
center ourselves, how we decideto begin this fresh day void of
momentum from everything thathappened before we went to sleep
.
We stopped that.
This is our chance to makechoices and decisions free of
strings and attachments to howthings have gone before.
Every day, every morning, is afresh start where we have
(05:37):
permission and responsibility tolaunch our most passionate and
positive thoughts and desiresright from the jump.
I choose to make today countwith positivity and grace.
We would all love to live alife where every single day is a
home run.
Now, while we intellectuallyknow that that's perhaps
(05:59):
unrealistic, who says we can'taim for the bullseye every time?
So when we're talking aboutmaking it count, let's not get
it twisted.
We're talking about keepingyour eye on the prize and using
the power of the morning toanchor yourself in what matters
most to you, not to the world, not to your boss, not to your
(06:20):
family, not to your friends, toyou.
Sure, they may be involved inthe highlight reel of your day
they probably will be, because agood life always includes the
people we choose.
But when it comes to thismantra, it's important to stay
connected to you and your visionof the day.
Making today count can reallyonly be measured and adjudicated
(06:42):
by you and only you.
When you are tuned into yourown needs and desires, then
you'll be able to show up betterin all those other areas of
your life, I promise.
And this allows you to keepyour goals and objectives in the
top ranking spot of yourpriorities and allow you to
serve and deliver your gifts tothe world, all the while
(07:05):
nurturing and supporting what'sbeen most important to you.
First and foremost, I choose tomake today count with positivity
and grace.
At this point, it's importantto start to mindfully and
intentionally tune into yourfirst thoughts.
In the morning, like when youopen your eyes, what's the very
(07:27):
first thought that you think?
Is it about how you feel?
Is it about what's on yourplate for the day?
Is it where's my phone?
What did I miss?
And, trust me, I've been guiltyas charged on all of the above.
You can trust and believe, but Iheard that Oprah Winfrey once
said that she trained herself tobegin every day with the very
first thought that sheconsciously thinks being to say
(07:50):
to herself thank you.
Which is perfect, because Ican't remind you enough,
tomorrow is not promised.
We make plans, we hope, we havefaith that there's a whole life
ahead of us that are going tobe filled with our hopes and our
desires.
But none of that is guaranteedNot to be throwing doom and
(08:12):
gloom into the mix, but more sothe idea of starting the day
with gratitude.
This is the foundation layerfor tackling the day with
sure-footedness and positivityand grace.
I choose to make today countwith positivity and grace.
(08:32):
When it comes to positivity, this is not a fake it till you
make it kind of thing.
This is looping back to theidea of choice and empowering
belief that your thoughts andchoices are ingredients that
make a direct impact on how yourday is going to go.
A few years ago I bought asmart car.
(08:52):
You know those teeny cars thathave room for like one and a
half people in them.
Great car, highly recommend.
But that's not my point.
My point is that once I boughtthat car, I started seeing them
everywhere, without going intothe neuroscience and tested
applications of this.
The same goes for our thoughtsand beliefs.
When we choose positivity, westart to see it in more nooks
(09:17):
and crannies than when we werejust going with the flow and
letting whatever enter ourconsciousness, because we were
doing so unconsciously.
When we reposition ourselves tostart living life with
intention and with empoweredchoices, then we are actively
and consciously applying theingredients to our day that are
(09:38):
in alignment with our desires.
Now, that is a recipe for a daythat looks more like a day that
I want to show up for.
How about you?
I choose to make today countwith positivity and grace.
Now look, I'm the first to admitthat the world is chaos and we
are all making it up as we goalong.
(09:59):
That's no secret and it's notbreaking news.
There are plenty of reasons whywe protect ourselves with
thoughts of preventativemeasures and arm our thoughts
with what could go wrong, andsometimes we even allow fear to
come to the party when we'redesigning our days and our
mindset.
We want to protect ourselvesand make sure that we have
(10:21):
thought through every possiblescenario with our wild
imaginations in order to be ableto navigate the unknowns in our
life.
And those unknowns, they willfind us and they'll catch us off
guard, and they will comeuninvited.
But you know what is in yourcontrol.
It's how much grace you affordthe situation, being able to
(10:43):
identify with awareness theactuality of the situation.
You are going to be able totake your feet out of the fire
and step away until you're ableto see the situation for what it
is and respond with what youneed, with what you need.
And in trying situations, theonly place to start is with
(11:04):
grace.
Grace to adapt, grace to changethe plan.
Grace to let yourself off thehook if things haven't turned
out the way that you'd hoped.
Grace to navigate and respondin the moment to what you need,
as these situations often findus caught off guard.
Grace is the gift you giveyourself, and when the going
(11:28):
gets tough, it's time to giveyourself a shit ton of grace, as
my bestie Leanne put it,because it's only from a place
of grace that we can suspend ourexpectations and really respond
to the actuality of thesituation that's just landed in
front of us.
Grace, the gift you giveyourself, the companion to help
(11:51):
you through.
As you remember that this tooshall pass, I choose to make
today count with positivity andgrace.
You know I love a good mantraand when it comes to mantras,
(12:13):
they can be so powerful and soimpactful when used first thing
in the morning.
And if you've been through myseven day mojo makeover, you
know how much mantras can be agame changer and how there's
this direct relationship betweenthe mantra and when you use it.
Mantras can be the actualstarting blocks to how you start
(12:35):
your day, in addition to beingthere throughout your day-to-day
.
And it really gets to be therefor the situations that are
planned and the ones that aren't.
And this one is so cool becauseit checks so many boxes.
It's powerful, it's positive,it's empowering, it's
all-encompassing, and the factthat it arms you to be ready for
(12:57):
anything, and I don't knowabout you, but I could use all
the armor I can take, and youknow that we can make plans as
much as we like and sometimeslife is just going to life and
anything can happen.
It's anybody's game Now.
That can be terrifying, it canalso be super exciting and like.
(13:18):
There are these days where I sitthere and there's just this
pull that I feel, where I anchormyself in mantras and
meditation and take the time toplay a little and ask the
universe hey, show me how goodit can get, what kind of gift
and magic is waiting for metoday?
And, as we know, when we ask,the universe usually responds.
(13:39):
So mind your questions, ladiesand gentlemen.
So now it's time where we getto go a little bit deeper on the
idea of how you start your dayand how it guides your life.
So to do so today, we're goingto take to the streets.
I'm going to mic up, we'regoing to have a little chat
about morning routines, thepower of intention and how
(13:59):
paying attention from the momentyou open your eyes can make all
the difference.
We're going to talk about grace, the ability to adapt and flex,
and expose how healthy it is tojust sometimes stay in bed.
So stick around.
You're going to hear all aboutit on this next edition of Mojo
(14:19):
on the Go.
You're going to hear all aboutit on this next edition of Mojo
on the Go.
Hello and welcome, this is it.
This is another episode.
We're doing Mojo on the Go andwe're in France.
And, yeah, we're talking aboutmorning routines, not something
(14:41):
I have been especially expert in.
So what I want to share withyou today is a little bit about
what I've learned and what I'vedone in trying to crack the code
of having a good morningroutine, and there's so many
good reasons to have a good one.
So, as I continue to try toclimb that mountain of having a
(15:02):
great morning routine, I wantedto just kind of take this mojo
on the go to share just some ofmy insights about it.
So we're going to talk aboutwhat does a good routine look
like.
We'll talk about the importantingredients and how to really
make it your own, and even someof the things that we can do to
navigate when it's off, when wefall out of routine.
(15:23):
And it's weird, because Ireally fundamentally do believe
that a good morning routine kindof sets the stage for all of it
, and so I find it reallyinteresting that I've got this
like adversarial relationshipwith mornings, because I love
mornings.
I used to well, just in workingin the service industry, I mean,
(15:44):
I was no stranger to early, early mornings.
When I ran Starbucks we wouldstart the day, that's like on
the clock, at 5.30 in themorning and it was great.
My day was done by two and Ihad all this like great wake up
time, like there's this reallyspecial time of the day where
everything's just quiet and whenI worked at the pub I would
(16:08):
come home at like I would finishwork at 2.30.
I would be home by three or3.30.
And my favorite time and ofcourse you can't go to bed right
away Like as soon as I comehome, it's not like head on the
pillow, I'm out of sleep, I'mstill kind of revved up from the
day, right.
So I would stay up and I wouldjournal or I would do something
creative or watch a show, and myfavorite time of the day was
(16:31):
between three and five and therewas just something really
magical about those hours.
So morning is whenever youstart your day.
It doesn't have to be the MarkWahlberg get up at 4 am and work
out 17 times a day.
That's not what we're talkingabout.
I want to talk about what worksfor you, and talk about it in a
(16:54):
way that it's not prescriptive, because you are the one who's
going to do the work to makesure that your morning routine
works for you, and there's lotsof places to go for inspiration.
I mean, mel Robbins has got herfive second rule where she
counts down from five and thenyou just move.
That's it.
You know.
But one of the best things I'veheard is from my girl, oprah,
(17:18):
and you know that just sayingthank you first thing in the
morning boom, that's.
That can be an ingredient inyour morning routine.
So what we want to achieve inthis podcast is how to get you
from where you are to where youwant to be with your morning
routine.
So, when it comes to how tobuild your morning routine, the
one that's perfect for you, theone that's perfect for you, it's
(17:42):
not a flip of the switch.
That's been my first aha andkind of perfecting my own
morning routine is that it's notthe flip of a switch.
I can't write it out like arecipe and then, just tomorrow,
that's my routine.
There's going to be some trialand error.
There's going to be things thatdon't work.
There's going to be days thatyou sleep in, going to be some
trial and error.
There's going to be things thatdon't work.
There's going to be days thatyou sleep in.
(18:03):
There's going to be days thatyou hit snooze.
So the number one ingredient inbuilding your perfect routine
is give yourself some grace.
Aha moment.
Number two what works forsomebody else isn't going to
work for everybody else.
So if we all had the MarkWahlberg morning routine you can
Google it if you don't knowwhat I'm talking about that
(18:25):
wouldn't make us all happy orhave better days.
That works for Mark Wahlberg,clearly.
But the homework assignment iswhat's your perfect morning
routine?
Because what's good for you isall that matters.
Morning routine, because what'sgood for you is all that
matters.
Trying to make a morningroutine that works for someone
else work for you just as wellis like trying to make a gin and
(18:47):
tonic with white wine.
It's just not going to work.
There's got to be an elementwhere you tap into what
observedly works well for you.
The morning routine was one ofthe things that I used as a
starting building block when Iwas crawling out of the
depression of grief and lossafter I moved back to Canada and
(19:10):
I thought a morning routine wasa pretty good place to start.
If you've listened to the otherpodcasts, you know I've talked
about how I just reallycommitted to the grieving
process and just let me and mybrain and my body just do
whatever it felt it needed to do.
But there came a tipping pointwhere I healed myself out of
(19:31):
that place and I was ready tostart dipping my toe back in the
waters of life again.
And that's why I thought amorning routine would be a good
place to start, because when youstart your day on grounded
footing, you can't help but takestronger steps from the jump.
So I started just by making alist of things that make me
(19:52):
happy and things that bring meenergy, and I kind of broke it
down into mind, body and spirit.
And I noticed that when I puton some music and my headphones
and I had a two-song dance partyin my bedroom before I changed
my clothes, before I started myday, oh man, those were really
(20:17):
noticeable and recognizable gooddays.
And I could tell that they weregood days because I had a
really long string of bad daysand I knew that was a good one
because it got my body movingand it lifted my soul and it
made me smile.
And again, this may not be foryou, but maybe it is.
So the next aha moment is justto give it a try, because you
(20:42):
know what else I also tried?
I also tried getting up andgoing for a jog.
I'm not a jogger.
What was I thinking?
I had no business thinking thatI could just like start being a
jogger, but it had worked forother people.
So I thought, hey, why not giveit a try?
I think the next key part, kindof at this point of the
development process, is to writeit down, set the intention the
(21:06):
night before of what you wantyour morning routine to look
like the next day and just letlike follow your gut, let the
inspiration find you and be likeyou know what I want to do
tomorrow morning.
I'm just going to take myselfout, I'm going to do a coffee
and a crossword.
I'm just going to wake up.
(21:26):
My brain Boom.
There you go.
There's something that you'resetting the intention.
Speaking of intention, you knowhow strongly I feel about
self-talk and that's wherethings like affirmations,
mantras and gratitude come into,I believe, mantras and
gratitude come into, I believe,a universal theme that should
(21:47):
weave its way into any goodmorning routine.
So, whether that's an awarenesswalk or journaling, or having a
post-it note of mantras thatyou regularly look at on your
bathroom mirror that you canshare with yourself and align
yourself with, share withyourself and align yourself with
mantras, phrases and sayingsthat really knock you to the
back of your chair and remindyou of the greatness.
Now, placing that at the top ofyour day inspires you to maybe
(22:11):
repeat it again at lunch, maybelook at it again before bed, and
more and more of these thoughts, these mantras, these anchors
help to paint your choices anddecisions and your feelings as
you go forward, because it's allabout keeping it well-rounded.
Sometimes it's going to bedance parties, sometimes it's
going to be brain work, and forme, I do break it into mind,
(22:35):
body and spirit right.
So I do the crossword and theSudoku, I have my coffee.
That's for my soul.
I do the dance party or somePilates for my body and I do a
really intentional like gettingready routine where I really
tune into my body and I reallyintentionally put on my socks.
(22:55):
I'm not thinking about anythingelse other than what it feels
like to put on my socks, howgrateful I am to be able to walk
around every day, and just thatdoing those kinds of activities
just drops you into the now.
And when you've dropped intothe now, you can't be worried
about the future.
You can't be regretting thingsfrom the past because you are in
(23:19):
the now.
Now there's going to be timeswhere your morning routine can
happen, routine ritual, whateverit is.
In routines and in rituals, asin life, things are not always
linear.
You're going to feel sicksometimes.
You're going to be have anearly work meeting that's going
to throw off your schedule.
You're going to have an earlywork meeting that's going to
(23:40):
throw off your schedule.
You're going to be traveling, you're going to be suffering
from jet lag, or maybe just aday of ennui.
Whatever, babes, in thosemoments it's going to be really
instinctive to beat yourself up.
You know how I feel about that.
(24:01):
So this is where we go back tothe grace, giving yourself a
shit ton of grace to just say, okay, today's the day I don't do
it.
And then, because heavenwilling, you're going to have a
chance to do it again tomorrowand maybe that gives you a
chance to think about.
Why didn't I want to do ittoday?
(24:22):
What do I need to focus on?
What is taking my attentionaway from this self-care act?
Because time is not always onthe old rinse and repeat cycle,
and if it is, we maybe want tohave a look at that, because
life should never be boring andhaving a great morning routine
is just getting you on that goodfooting so that you can go out
(24:45):
and ask the universe hey, universe, how great can this day
be and I'm saying this to youfrom one of the first sunny days
in a very long time, so I'mreally feeling that how great
can this day be?
Energy, because, if I'm reallybeing honest with you, I've had
a really shit week and I've beenreally struggling with some
(25:08):
depression, with dad being inthe hospital and being away and
not being able to fully bepresent in this moment here in
France.
So, yeah, I'm having a bad day,but I'm having a bad day in
France, so that takes a littleedge off, but that doesn't mean
that I'm not also completelyconsumed with paralyzing sadness
(25:30):
.
So I only share that, to sharewith you how, in times of
rupture, in times of grief, intimes of like uncertainty.
These routines can be remindersof us to know where to look
(25:51):
when things get super hard.
And also, I say that with thecaveat that in those really shit
moments, these routines aretypically going to be the last
thing that we want to do,because we love to.
I don't know self-sabotage Checkthe notes.
I'm not a therapist, I'm not apsychologist.
(26:11):
But I think it also gives uspermission to just sit in our
feelings and the more we do andacknowledge and honor those shit
feelings, the faster they goaway, because we see them, we
respect them, we engage withthem.
Fuck, if I wanted to feel sad.
(26:33):
For these last few days I feltsad.
It's not about a fake it tillyou make it.
But now that I'm starting totake steps to be in the now and
reject my anxiety by developingthese routines, I've given
myself the chance to like, reachout for a lifeline, reach out
to myself for a lifeline.
(26:54):
And that doesn't mean that Ihave not leaned on friends, and
that does not mean that Ihaven't been journaling, and
that doesn't mean that I I don'tneed support.
It just means I'm a little lessadrift.
And, yeah, I'm gonna have toswim a bit to get to that
lifeline, but it's there becauseI created it.
So if I'm wondering, woe is me.
(27:18):
I wish I could feel better.
I've got concrete andactionable things that I know I
can do to save myself a littlebit.
Another way you want to checkunder the hood if your morning
routine just isn't quiteclicking and you can't quite get
it off the ground is to checkin on your night routine,
(27:40):
because that was another ahamoment for me.
And you've heard all the things.
No devices an hour before bed.
Reading is great.
Keep the screen time down.
Great time to journal, greattime to meditate, great time for
prayer, great time.
One of the things that my momtaught me to do really early on
(28:04):
was, if I was ever havingtrouble sleeping, just start
sending love out to all thepeople that I know.
Just list them.
Just start listing all yourfavorite people and just start
sending them love.
What a great thing to teachyour kid and it works every time
.
What a great way to fall asleep.
(28:27):
And maybe you're asking why isthis important?
Well, because you're important.
Why can't you just roll out ofbed and get into life and put
two feet on the ground and wipethe sleep from your eyes and
just go out and see what happens.
Well, I know, in this life younever know what you're going to
get.
But, as I say in my intro, witha little attention and a little
(28:49):
intention, you can maybesqueeze more juice out of this
life than previously thought.
What if I'm right?
What if it's true?
What if life does get betterwhen you live with more
intention, when you giveyourself a running head start on
your day, when you make surethat your cup is absolutely full
before going out into the worldand giving it all away?
(29:10):
And what if all that was inyour control?
What if all that was yourchoice?
How would your life lookdifferent and how can you make
was in your control?
What if all that was yourchoice?
How would your life lookdifferent and how can you make
it work for you?
And don't mistake the discomfortof change for it not working.
You've got to give yourself andyou've got to give these
changes a chance.
(29:31):
So plan for the hiccups, planfor the day off, promise
yourself that you can miss a daybut you can't miss two in a row
and see what happens and startnoticing how the rest of the
days go in relationship to howoften you do your morning
routine, collect that data, lookat it objectively, and that's
(29:53):
how you're going to find outwhat works and feel good about
doing things on purpose.
Feel good about doing thingsfor yourself, and just think of
the message that that's sendingyour higher self.
You're sending the message thatyou are your most important
person because you are the focusof the very first part of your
(30:14):
day.
That is some self-esteembuilding shit right there, and
that's what a good morningroutine helps you do.
So I got to hit the marketbefore she closes.
I'm going to make some potatoleek soup because there's going
to be some rainy, cold days onthe way.
Today it's 21 and beautiful, sogood luck with your morning
(30:37):
routines.
If there's anything I missed orif there's something that you
know works really, really well,I would love to hear from you.
So I'm going to shoot it backto the studio and have a great
day, and I hope tomorrow youhave a lovely morning.
