In this episode, I tell Jules about seeing my 15-year-old daughter try on her formal dress for the first time... and how I basically crumbled into a million pieces.

Julie then tells the beautiful story of her son Patty getting engaged, and how he was white as a sheet with nerves before it!

Lots of laughs - and a lot of heart in this one. And in case you haven't heard, we're 2 episodes away from a huge announcement! I can't wait to share it with you!!! 🤗

Rabbit podcast with. Rabbit.
Hey, I'm Rabbit. I record this podcast inside a
cute little retro caravan from 1967 that I've tore around all
over the place. Fan podcast with Rabbit.
Oh I just realised I made a incorrect statement recently in
an episode. And thank you for the shocked
face when I said I made an incorrect statement.

(00:24):
You're like, you name a time you've made a correct one in
episode 199, I said to the couple that was sitting there.
They snuggled up together and I went, look at you too.
I reckon you're the first peopleto hold hands in the pod van.
No, no, your mum and dad did. Yeah, and probably me and Mick

(00:49):
as well. Have you guys been in here?
Oh yeah. Same time as my mum and dad,
same day, same event. All right, same occasion.
All right mate, no need to shout.
There is though. I'm gonna go outside and scream
after this. Why do you always type to me in
all capitals I. Don't know.

(01:14):
Yeah, but that was pretty cute. That guy wasn't sitting in there
and they're just holding hands. Look at you guys.
And that'd be my mum and dad. I'm not sure if they were in
that episode, but they. Yeah, it's so cute seeing them
walk off. They came and visited here on
the coast once and I remember we're out sure which beach it
was. I think it was Wamble by the
lagoon there. And yeah, it was.

(01:35):
And they were walking along the beach and gone for a bit of a
stroll and just, I got this great photo of the two of them
just walking around. They're just holding hands
walking along the beach. I love that, but those kind of
stories, those marriages with longevity.
I, I saw a lady yesterday, Janelle Bloom.
She actually was the stylist on my first 3 cookbooks and she she

(01:56):
used to be on ready steady cook like she's.
Oh yeah. Beautiful, beautiful woman.
I love her to death and my boys loved her too 'cause she worked
with them at some of the photo shoots and stuff and and they
still talk about her. And I spotted her yesterday at
the Women's Weekly. I hadn't seen her for years and
we just, I was so happy to see her and I, I asked her how

(02:18):
everyone was going. She spoke about her parents, who
have just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
Oh my gosh. 68th wedding anniversary and her dad is 90
and she said he had to go into hospital for a procedure and
they wanted to keep him in for two nights and he said can she
stay with me and they said no and he said discharge me then.

(02:42):
I haven't slept apart from her for 68 years, and I'm not going
to start now. So we went home.
Oh, he's 90. He should have stayed in the
hospital. They should have let her stay.
Yeah. But anyway, isn't that cute?
Oh. My goodness. 68 years, here's me
thinking 30s, quite the milestone.

(03:02):
Yeah, nothing. Just getting started so.
We're on our honeymoon. That's amazing noodles.
For breakfast. OK, that was from another
episode, so that makes no sense whatsoever, hey.
It makes perfect sense to peoplewho like food.
If you're on your honeymoon eating noodles for breakfast,
you're living the dream. It doesn't matter what the back.
Story is also no context needed. No context needed.

(03:22):
Statement like, yeah, you're on your honeymoon eating.
Noodles. And that's.
Just if you know, you know. And if you don't?
IYKYK. Yeah, as the youngsters say.
Well, I don't know that they do anymore.
They do who? Was it?
Someone recently said slay so mydon't.
Think anyone says slay anymore? Do they?
Apparently they stopped about three days after they started.

(03:44):
Trends and things roll around way quicker now.
Remember fidget spinners? I've got a shipment of them just
coming in now. Oh my.
God, they're so. Lit, but they got threw up in my
mouth just a little bit. Then slay queen.
Yes. My God, there'd be young people,

(04:08):
just their eyes be rolling so hard there.
Tiana, my 15 year old daughter'snot even listening to this and I
know that she's shaking right now.
Yeah, yeah. It's just it's.
She's just feel a vibe, yeah, that old people try to be cool
vibes. She's 15 years old, Tiana, and
she's got a formal coming out. Year 10 Formal.
Oh my gosh, yeah, I know. So she went off and.

(04:30):
She needs to go before the formal to Tiana's salon thingy,
get her hair done and nails done, maybe do herself a little
drawing. Tiana's salon thingy where you.
Don't have to pay me any money, but you can if you want.
Yeah. I think the Jingle the.
Jingle was like that. Yeah, yeah, I can't remember the
exact word on that. Unless you wanna give us some

(04:54):
money. Yeah, I can't remember.
Oh, that was cute. Tea used to come into work at
the radio station and spend the day there.
On school holidays. She set up Tiana's salon thingy
and you could get your nails done.
Or you could do colouring in. Yep, she could tell you a story.
She might get a picture for you.Yeah, it was a very broad sort
of range of services. She made bracelets?

(05:17):
Yep, there's a lot of a lot of nail painting.
I remember station manager and program director.
Yeah, I think that was one of her more popular services.
It was the nail. And she enjoyed doing that as
well. Yeah.
And I was Adam. I sent the group all e-mail.
Yeah. You do not have to pay her
anything. Please don't.
It's not about that. It's.
She just loves to. Yeah, she made a killing out of
it. Yeah.
So of course, she kept coming back every school holidays.

(05:39):
I was so cool. Yes.
Gosh, Little T Then, now. Yeah. 15 years old.
She heard about this dress shop down in Sydney.
Yeah. And that's where she wanted to
get her dress from. OK, Oh my God, There's a reason
they didn't take me. There's probably many reasons.
Just one, you think? It's the fashion, it's the
complaining they were. Worried about your advice?

(06:02):
Oh, man, So her and Sav went down there, she tried on all
these dresses and she said she didn't wanna show me until, you
know, formal night of all surprise.
Yeah. And.
When it's too late for you to say you're not leaving the house
in that young lady. So that that's already happened.
So apparently they split up the side.

(06:22):
Yep. Like it almost goes to her
armpit. Like it's, it's quite the split
up the side. So, hooks and eyes, Velcro, What
are you gonna do? Yeah, like a probably Velcro.
Oh no, that's way too no hockey strapped.
It needs to be a lot more securethan that.
Yeah, I might just get the sewing machine on it or
something. Yeah, but Oh my God, they're

(06:43):
expensive. Yeah.
Dresses. I was like, can't you like try
something on and then just jump on Shane or something and.
Listen, Mr. Do with you, Mr. Fake.
Sneaker Mr. Fokker, you fake hockey.
Fokker, leave her alone you fucker.
So she goes to this place, now you have to have an appointment

(07:05):
to you can't just walk in to this.
Yeah, you got to have an appointment.
And it's all they do. It's just, it's a they just do
formal dresses. And so, yeah, Sad called me and
she was just like a mess. Like just.
Because of seeing tea like this and Tiana was in her element.
Of course she was that. Is so funny I said this to tea

(07:27):
about how like you know, she's into Formula One loves her rugby
she she can be quite sporty girl.
She's not really a girly girl, but there.
Are occasions where you can juststep into enjoying something a
bit different, right? I said it must be something,
like baked into your DNA or something because she just.

(07:48):
She loved it. Yeah.
When I say she chose the dress, well, Sav chose the dress.
And then Tiana chose the dress. Yeah.
And an arrangement was reached over how much we would pay.
And then if she wants that. Yep.
Then you get she works. Yeah.
She's got money. Spends it all on stuff from
Shane, funnily enough. Why can't you get your formal
dress from there? Because she doesn't want to look

(08:08):
like she's dressed in two different kinds of plastic bag
when she goes to her formal. So ordered this thing and then
it had to come in from overseas.Yeah.
And it probably from St. Timo.
So it arrived, we got the phone call.
It took three months or something.
Yeah. As we're heading down to Sydney

(08:30):
to fly out to Thailand on that holiday.
That was when we stopped there and I said, what's the go?
Am I sitting in the car through this?
And she goes, Nah, come in. So T said I could go in and
watch. Now remember, I'm off my anxiety
meds That blocked me from crying.
Oh, man, what a stunner. And what it was a real moment,

(08:54):
man. So she comes out of this change
room, which, you know, they're big, like the highest ceilings
I've ever seen. And it's velvet curtains from
the roof all the way down to thefloor.
Curtains come apart. She comes stepping out in this
unbelievable dress, steps up onto outside each of the
changers. There's this podium, yes, and

(09:16):
the stylist who's there in the store will take your phone and
go around, walk around her and do like this amazing show.
They know what they're doing as well.
They leave the head off in case I don't know if you want to post
it online or so I don't know. Because your hair is not done.
Maybe, I don't know, maybe it's just all about the dress.
But yeah, she came out and. In case one of the clients might

(09:39):
be a bit ugly and they don't want to bring the tone of the
dress down. Yeah, or one of the girl.
Like they've got a few of them standing there and one goes, how
come you filmed all the other ones fallen?
You only feel me from the neck down.
Oh, honey. Don't ask questions you don't
want the answer to it. Ow be lucky we got those feet in

(09:59):
that shot. Yeah.
Yeah. Could you, could you cover them
up? Actually, we'll go again.
Her dress has even got a it's got a train on us.
Oh hell. Lovely.
Oh my God. It is just sensational.
Yeah. Now I'm glad they didn't take me
the first time. Yeah, because I would have just
crumbled. Yeah.
I absolutely would have bought her anything and everything she

(10:20):
wanted. Yep, 100%.
That's how it works. Maybe that was part of the plan
from the SAB side. You know, I will control the
budget on this thing. I know what you will be like.
Let's sell the house. Yeah.
My girl needs a dress. Oh my God, she looks absolutely
incredible. So we, yeah, we took it home
from there and it needs to have some alterations.
The split up the side. Yeah, it needs to be not quite

(10:42):
as as full on, but T's right up for all of that and everything.
And yeah, it looks amazing. And yeah, I was, I was choking
up sitting there watching now because of that thing of, like
you said, from when she was, youknow, Tiana's salon thingy and
she's all grown up. Oh, man.
Like she, she walked into that change room as a 15 year old

(11:04):
about to go on holiday with her parents in Thailand.
Yeah. And she stepped out as a 22 year
old. Yeah, I know.
It's it's. Kind of.
It's like a time machine. And blink and she will be 22
years old. It's, it's just, it's
extraordinary. And I, I actually don't think
I've seen you since the the big event in our family.
Oh, the are we saying yeah, the engagement?

(11:25):
Yeah, yeah. So have I seen you since then?
I don't think. We've turned about that.
You haven't seen me. You sent me a photo.
Yeah, a family photo, which I then photoshopped and removed
him out of and sent back to you.Because that's right.
I never. Because he's imaginary.
You always said Paddy was imaginary 'cause you could never
remember him, no. Because yeah, I think just,

(11:46):
yeah. I don't know why whenever I went
round to your place was back when we were on air, never there
he was never. There he was training or he was
at work or whatever. Yeah.
Sure, there's this third son called Paddy.
Whatever the. Sporty one yeah.
And so he had yeah, I, I, so I had this whole thing about Paddy
doesn't really exist. So when you sent the photo,
tell. Engaged a photo.

(12:06):
He's engaged. I send it back and win who's
who's engaged and and I'd erasedhim out of the picture, the
middle of the picture. Oh my God.
Have you been to Guandalan Bowling Club?
They're right there on the shores of Lake Macquarie.
They do delicious meals upstairsin the Foreshore Bistro and

(12:27):
Cafe, which is run by the Dish Catering Group.
So you know it's good stuff and you can dine out on the balcony
looking out over the lake. It is beautiful.
They got the cute little foreshore key ask for a coffee
and snacks right by the jetty. The entertainment's top notch.
They got Friday night seafood raffles and Sunday sessions with
live music in the beer garden. You want to find out what's

(12:49):
happening at the club, check outtheir Facebook page or visit
gwandalenbowlingclub.com dot AU King Kumper, Mighta Chan have
been big supporters of the Pod Dan podcast right from the
start, and you get all the stufffrom them that you'd expect to
You get plans, you get all the Weber stuff, you get all the
steel gear, the amazing principal kitchens, but it's the
stuff that you don't expect like.

(13:10):
That a customer coming in with 46,000 colour sample swatches.
She's been in colour for her kitchen cupboards.
I adrenaled her down to 4 colours for her and that took
him out an hour and a half. She got very emotional because
she was so inundated with colours.
Towards the end she was kind of pick up the colours again.
I said no stop. I've seen photos, seen videos.
Her husband's come in and gave me a big hug, saying thank you
so much, 'cause you're getting very emotional about it and

(13:32):
she's super happy. That's what she get.
And the mighty helpful King Campbell, Minor Gen.
With Robert. How did you get told?
Well, he kind of bounced a few things off us that we knew it
was pending. And then he arranged for us and

(13:53):
his brothers and all her family to be up in the Hunter Valley at
a restaurant waiting for them toarrive.
And then he sort of told her he was taking her to the Hunter
Valley for lunch. And he stopped on the way at
this winery. And they had a little wine
tasting. And he'd arranged for the winery
to say to them, oh, there's a really nice view over there if

(14:16):
if you wanted to go for a walk. And they gave them a glass of
champagne each. And he took her through to this
beautiful view. And then and he took the knee
and dropped the question and said that was really beautiful.
How, how? How had she gotten onto it at
all? Look, I think they'd obviously
had the conversation. I actually think these days
they're having the conversation. It's like if I were to propose.

(14:38):
Yeah, what are we thinking around marriage?
Yeah. And yeah, you know, is that
something you won't feel? Life and what?
And it's, it's not so much presented to you as this is what
this is what your ring will be. And this is how it's gonna all
happen. There's it's a bit more
collaborative these days. So.
But she didn't know when and shedidn't know where.

(14:58):
And she certainly didn't expect to walk into a restaurant and
find both our family. Yeah, sitting there waiting for
them. Both families knew it was
happening, obviously, if that's why you're both there, even if
you haven't been told, had you been told explicitly this is
what's happening? Yeah, Yeah.
So you knew that. We knew that that's what he was
setting off to do. It was so beautiful the morning
of. He was leaving to go and pick

(15:19):
Brooke up and go for this drive, you know, and go to the winery.
And we were going to head off a little later to go out for lunch
and. And he's come to say goodbye to
him. He was white as a sheet.
Yeah. And I've just said you might
want to try looking a little bitless like you're about sheets,
buddy. And he goes, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah. And yeah.

(15:45):
And so they walked in. It was just.
Beautiful, isn't it? Cool?
It's such a awesome moment. I love proposal stories.
Oh, the surprises. And can I tell you he Brookie's
mum, she's beautiful. They're beautiful family, but we
just love them. We get on and it's, it's really
lovely, lovely match of familiesas well as as of young people,

(16:05):
you know. And she was sitting next to me
and we're looking out outside the restaurant.
And she said to me, you know, I'm not a really sort of
sentimental person, but she said, you see that bird over
there sitting on that fence post?
And I said, yeah. And she goes, well my mum passed
away not too long ago and ever since then, on important
occasions, I've been seeing thisbird and so then, you know,

(16:29):
she's all teared up and I'm justburst into tears.
She won't I'm. Not either at all.
Ever. It's just like the whole family.
And it was funny because I had with me a handbag which is a
beautiful old glomish like Ortonpurse that used to belong to my
nan. And on really important

(16:51):
occasions I bring that handbag with me.
And it's just my way of having nan with me.
And I've taken that I've, I tookit with me on book tour 'cause I
just knew my name would just freaking love being on book
tour. And I take it sometimes when I
go to see musicals, 'cause she, she used to love musicals, those
sort of senses of occasion. And I had that handbag with me.

(17:13):
And so like, that's you do. Do you still just gorgeous?
Set a seat for her at Christmas. What we always said that this
spare seat at the table and it'sthat is to from Nan, it's from
Mick's, Mick's mum and his dad. And it's for, you know, people
who don't have a seat at anyone's table that we set that

(17:33):
spare. Oh, that's the table.
So yeah, I'm not saying it, man. What are you talking about?
So it was just gorgeous. But you know that Paddy, he's
still my little baby, you know he's still my little blonde
haired boy who was just so such a chill little toddler and he's
now just such a chill young man.And him, him and Brooke are off

(17:56):
in Europe now for a 25 country 6month to.
Well, that's the noodle honeymoon.
The noodle honeymoon, it's not even their honeymoon yet, but
we. He sends photos every day.
We're getting photos, you know, Yeah, our our chat group and.
And occasionally he'll just senda little message to Mika Rice
saying can you send me a pictureof the dogs, please?

(18:18):
You know I. Know that's gonna be cash.
Can you send me just some? No.
He's a little bit homesick. It's really cute.
Is he? But, you know, he's just, well,
we're going. Through that right now as well
with Jordan, He's, he'll be turning 21 end of this year.
Yeah. And he will probably be moving
out this year. And so we're having moments.
Actually, we had a, we had a chat with him last night, Sav

(18:38):
and I yeah. Because his girlfriend's down in
Sydney and he's in out all the time.
Don't know, don't even know whenhe's home.
He's got uni, he's got work. He's down in Sydney.
Yeah, that's what happens when they grow up.
Yeah, they become a bit ghosty. Yeah, I'm kind of OK.
I actually like that this is happening because it's not going
straight from a heart. He's there 24/7 till he's
suddenly not. There, I don't think that ever.

(19:00):
Things really. Yeah, you know, they do.
They get their own lives and they drift in and out of your
living room and you know, it's the same with mine.
Now, our thing that we asked last night was just that when he
comes home from being away for three or four days or something
and rolls in the door just to come and find us and say hi.
Yeah, you know, yeah. We've had that conversation.
Yeah. Because you can get from the

(19:21):
front door to the stairs and up to your room without wandering
into the where everyone's. Living the same with us, but
don't. Yeah, that's that's the
conversation. We had.
But don't you know, it was a couple of nights ago when I said
to serve because I just like knowing who's in the house.
I I love totally. When we've got a full house.
When Jordan's home. Yeah.
Tiana's home. She doesn't have dance on or
anything. Harley's there.

(19:43):
We've got the five of us. Yeah.
At the table for dinner and. Including Harley.
Including Harley. Yeah, of course.
And I love, I love the full house yeah, feeling.
And I do too. Then there's times where, yeah,
tea might be the. Closer you get to that not being
the case anymore, the more you hang onto it. 100% yeah, that's
what's happening. Yeah.
And so yeah, I sav came downstairs at one point and I

(20:05):
went I said who's who's here? T's yeah, T's home.
Yeah. I said where's Jay?
And she goes Oh no, he's he's gone.
Oh, what's he doing? And she goes oh he's got he's in
down to Sydney and then he's gotuni on Monday.
He won't be back till Tuesday night.
And this was, like, Thursday or Friday, and I was like, say
goodbye to him. Yeah.
I didn't know he's gonna be awayfor all that time.

(20:25):
And that was kind of what made me go.
If you can. Yeah.
Just gonna say, all right, I'm off.
Yeah. Hug.
Yeah, and off we go. Yeah, it's funny, all these
different things. You gotta you navigate as you go
through and they. Don't think of that.
No, just drifting through their lives.
But you know what? We thanked him at the end of our
chat because, my God, he took iton board.

(20:45):
Yeah. And now we start looking at,
what, another 3-4 years maybe, and Tiana will be living in
Italy working on the Ferrari F1 team.
Yeah, and he's just Savon, I andHarley.
This is the point where Mick andI have reached recently, and
we've made some massive life decisions that are upcoming.

(21:06):
And it's all to do with staring down the barrel of retirement
age. Yeah.
Staring down the barrel of emptynesting and the two that are
left at home, of the three that I have, you know, looking around
for their own houses. MMM.
And. Have you?
Are you announcing the retirement village you're going
into? No.

(21:28):
I'm moving in with you. You're about to empty mess down.
We're gonna have, we're gonna create a commune.
Yeah, yeah. I'll change the rules then.
Though you don't have to say hi every time.
You can arrive back at. Home be avoiding it like the
plague. Like if you could create me in a
separate doorway in that'd be great.
Just seal up one of the the doorways.

(21:49):
Never a line. You're not allowed to cross that
line 2. Apartments.
Oh my God. Yeah, what a funny time, mate.
Hey, listen, this is what we're gonna do for my next episode,
whether it's gonna be a phone inone, cuz I haven't done one of
those in forever. Used to do like some phone topic
ones. Yeah, I get people's phone
numbers. I can ring them through my
recording gear and do one like that.

(22:11):
Or I'll pull the van up somewhere on a day and invite
people down and then come down. But proposal stories, I love a
proposal story. You've got me thinking with what
you're saying there about Paddy and.
Love a proposal story? And that'd be good to have an
episode just full of those, I reckon.
Yeah. Was my proposal story in the
first half or the second-half ofmy book?
Well, I don't know it so. First half.

(22:34):
That's all the time we've got. Today it's the podcast with
