(00:01):
Hi, this is Stefania over atPositive Affirmations and Audio Stories bringing you happy
thoughts, inspiration, motivation and entertainmentto start your day. We use the
power of positive words to help youlive the positive, uplifting lifestyle that you

(00:21):
deserve. This week's Sleep Story Time, and we've got the third part of
The Golden Slipper and Other Problems forViolet Strange, written by Anna Katherine Greene.
The lady who was being upset becauseher husband was found shot as well

(00:50):
as the baby, has finally madeher way to Violet Stranger's house for a
consultation. The clock on the mantelin Missus Stranger's rose colored boudoir had stuck
three, and Violet was gazing insome impatience at the door when there came

(01:12):
a gentle knock upon it, andthe maid, one of the elderly not
youthful kind, I shout in herexpected visitor. You are Missus Hammond,
She asked in natural awe of thetwo black figure outlined so sharply against the

(01:34):
deep pink of the sea shore room. The answer was the slow lifting of
the veil, which shadowed the featuresshe knew only from the cuts she had
seen in newspapers. You are missStrange. Same at her visitor, the
young lady, who I am chimed, in a voice as ringing as it

(01:57):
was sweet. I I am theperson you have come here to see,
and this is my home. Butthat does not make me less interested in
the unhappy or less desirous of servingthem. Certainly, you have met with
the two greatest losses which can cometo a woman. I know your story

(02:19):
well enough to say that. Butwhat have you to tell me in proof
that you should not lose your anticipatedincome as well? Something vital I hope
else I cannot help you, somethingwhich you should have told the coroner's judy

(02:40):
and did not. The flush, which was the sole answered these words called
forth, did not take from therefinement of the young widow's expression, but
rather added to it. Violet watchedit in its ebb and flow, and
seriously affected by it. Why shedid not know, for Miss Hammond had

(03:01):
made no other appeal, either bylook or gesture. Pushed forward a chair
and begged her visitor to be seated. We can converse in perfect safety here,
she said. When you feel quiteequal to it, let me hear
what you have to communicate, itwill never go any further. I cannot

(03:24):
do the work I do if Ifelt it necessary to have a confidant.
But you are so young, andso self, so inexperienced, you would
say, and so evidently a memberof what New Yorkers call society. Do
not let that trouble you. Myinexperience is not likely to last long,

(03:49):
and my social pleasures are more aptto add my efficiency than to detract from
it. With this, Violet's facebroke into a smile. It was not
the brilliant one so often seen uponher lips, but there was something in
its quality which carried encouragement to thewidow and led her to say, with

(04:11):
obvious eveners, you know the facts. I have read all the papers.
I was not believed to understand. It was your manner. I could not
help my manner. I was keepingsomething back, and being unused to deceit,
I could not act quite naturally. Why did you keep something back when

(04:33):
you saw the unfavorable impression made byyour reticence? What did you not speak
up and frankly tell your story?Because I was ashamed, because I thought
it would hurt me more to speakthan to keep silent. I do not
think so now, but I didthen, and so mate my great mistake.

(04:56):
You must remember not only the awfulshock of my double loss, but
the sense of guilt accompanying it.For my husband and I had quarreled that
night, quarreled bitterly. That waswhy I had run away into another room,
and not because I was feeling illand impatient of the baby's fretful cries.

(05:18):
So people have thought, in sayingthis, Miss Strange was perhaps cruelly
empathic. You wish to explain thatquarrel. You think it will be doing
any good to your cause to gointo that matter with me? Now I
cannot say, but I must firstclear my conscience and then try to convince

(05:42):
you that quarrel or no quarrel,he never took his own life. He
was not that kind. He hadan abnormal fear of death. I do
not like to say it, buthe was a physical coward. I have
seen him turn pale at the leasthint of danger. He could no more

(06:02):
have turned than muzzle upon his ownbreast than he could have turned it upon
his baby. Some other hand shothim, Miss Strange. Remember the open
window, the shouted mirror, andI think I know that hand. Her
head had fallen forward on her breast. The emotion she showed was not so

(06:25):
eloquent of grief as of deep personalshame. You think you know the man
in saying this, violess, voicestrange and quickly sunk to a whisper.

(06:46):
It was an accusation of murder shehad just heard, to my great distress.
Yes, when mister Hammond and Iwere married, the widow not seated
in a more determined tone. Therewas another man, a very violent one,
who vowed, even at the churchdoor, that George and I should

(07:10):
never live out two full years together. We have not. Our second anniversary
would have been in November. Butlet me say this, the quarrel of
which I speak was not serious enoughto occasion any such act of despair on
his part. A man will bemad to end his life on account of

(07:31):
so slight a disagreement. It wasnot even on account of the person of
whom I've just spoken, though thatperson had been mentioned between us earlier in
the evening, mister Hammond having comeacross him face to face that very afternoon
in the subway. Up to thistime, neither of us had seen or

(07:56):
heard of him since our wedding day. And you think this person whom you
barely mentioned, so pindful of hisgarage, that he sought out your domicile
and with the intention to murder, climbed the trellis leading to your room and
turned his pistol upon the shadowy figure, which was all he could see in

(08:18):
the semi obscurity of a much loweredghick. Guess jet a man in the dark
does not need a bright light tosee his enemy when he is intent on
avenge. Miss Strange altered her tone, and your husband, you must acknowledge

(08:39):
that he shut off his pistol, whether the other did or not, it
was in self defense. He willshoot to save his own life or the
babies. Then he must have seenor heard a man at the window and

(09:00):
would have shot there or try totry to yes the other shot first.
Oh, I've thought it all out, causing my husband's bullets go wild.
It was his which broke the mirror. Violet's eyes bright as stars, suddenly

(09:24):
narrowed. And what happened? Then? She asked, why cannot they find
the bullet because it went out ofthe window, glanced off and went out
of the window. Miss Hammond's tonewas triumphant, her look spirited and intense.

(09:50):
Violet eyed her compassionately. Would abullet glancing a from a mirror,
however, hung be apt to reacha window so far on the opposite side.
I don't know. I only knowthat it did. Was the contradictory,

(10:13):
almost absurd reply. What was thecause of the quarrel you speak of
between your husband and yourself? Yousee, I must know the exact truth
and all truth to be of assistanceto you. And that's it for today's

(10:45):
reading of the Golden Slipper and otherproblems for Violet Strange. It's time for
the truth. Violet needs the exacttruth. Is she going to get it?

(11:11):
