Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey sister, welcome
to the Power on Plants podcast.
Are you tired of staring intothe fridge wondering what to eat
so you can just feel better?
Do you want to avoid spendinghours in the kitchen making
complicated meals in the name ofhealth?
Would you love to leave fatiguebehind and finally have the
energy to do all the things youwant to do?
Hi, we're Jared and AnitaRoussel, christ followers,
(00:23):
healthcare professionals, parents of four and big fans of
great tasting food.
We, too, tried exercising more, eating natural and clean foods,
but we still found ourselvesstruggling with what we thought
were changes that come with ageor bad genes, and we weren't
finding answers the traditionalroute.
So we dug into the research andcreated our secret nutritional
(00:44):
weapon sustainable plant-basedliving.
The truth is, you can eat morewhole plant foods and it's not
hard.
You just need the way.
That's realistic and deliciousso you never feel deprived.
If you're ready to enjoy yourmeals, no longer be held back by
your health struggles andactively live your life, then
you're in the right place.
(01:05):
So grab your favoriteplant-based cup of happy pop in
those earbuds and let's getstarted.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Today we are talking
about Legos, legos, legos.
Yes, this is a topic that my18-year-old son would love.
He's always been a huge, hugeLego fan.
Now, as he's gotten older, hisinterest is in more intricate
sets and things like that, muchmore intricate.
But today, yes, I want to talkabout Legos.
Now Legos come in manydifferent shapes and sizes.
(01:34):
Each of them has a commondesign principle to it.
Like they've got the littleknob on top and you've got the
little recessed area on thebottom I'm sure there's a name
for them, I just don't know whatthey are and they pop onto one
another.
They kind of fit.
So each one of them has thoseexact same design principles.
Now I'm 53.
I had Legos when I was younger.
(01:54):
They looked very different then.
It was a lot more basic, notquite so many options available,
probably had a handful, but wemade all kinds of stuff with
them.
As you can probably imagine,we're not going to be discussing
Legos in today's episode.
Legos was a metaphor.
I hear all the time when we talkabout protein.
I hear that from my patients.
(02:15):
What about the protein?
What about amino acids?
So I thought today, all right,we talk about protein and we
mention how there are certainamino acids that you must get
from food that we do not makethe essential ones and then
there are non-essential ones, and that got me to thinking.
We talk about amino acids, butdo we really fully understand
them?
And don't worry, I'm not goingto go into detail here, but I am
(02:36):
going to put on my professorhat for just a moment and talk
about amino acids.
So, just like the Legos, aminoacids have two characteristic
little side chains and this iswhere they get their name and
this is what makes them an aminoacid.
You have an amine group, whichis a nitrogen-based side chain,
and then you have the carboxylgroup, which is a carbon bound
to oxygen, and it creates aslight acidic side chain there.
(03:00):
So you have amino and you havecarboxyl, since carboxyl is
slightly acidic.
That's where you get the nameamino acid.
So every amino acid that wefind in nature has those
commonalities, and that'simportant, because what happens
when you have the amino acidsthat are actually making
proteins and there are many ofthem that do not, but the ones
that make protein, the carboxyland the amino groups bind to one
(03:22):
another and creates this longchain, and it's the side chain
the carboxyl and the aminogroups bind to one another and
creates this long chain, andit's the side chain, the major
side chain of each of thoseamino acids that gives it
different characteristics.
So then, when you string themtogether, they fold up and then
they become whatever the DNA hascoded.
But there are many amino acidsthat are not used in protein
formation.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
But all proteins are
made up of strings of amino
acids.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yes, there are 20 of
them For humans.
Nine of them are essential.
The rest of them are consideredquote non-essential.
So what does that mean?
And I've thrown these termsaround before?
Essential means we do not makethem.
But the interesting thing is iswe don't make any amino acids
completely brand new.
The essential ones we must getfrom food.
The non-essential ones we makefrom the essential ones.
(04:07):
But they're not completelybrand new.
We just kind of reconfigurethem, add a little side chain
here, alter it the way that thebody needs.
The amino acids are used notjust for protein building but
also for other processes withinthe body, like there are some
that are converted to dopamineor norepinephrine or epinephrine
, which are neurotransmittersthat are converted to dopamine
or norepinephrine or epinephrine, which are neurotransmitters.
(04:28):
Tryptophan is converted intoserotonin, also a
neurotransmitter.
Histidine is converted intohistamines, which are used in
immune responses but alsostomach acid regulation.
There are many differentprocesses that utilize these.
So there's a lot of importancewith amino acids.
As I said, there are ones thatwe must get from our diet, but
animals also have this very samerequirement.
(04:48):
They have different amino acidsthat they do not make and must
get from their diet.
So what does this mean, ifanimals don't make certain ones,
then where are they getting it?
Hmm, I wonder.
Well, it turns out that plantsare the only thing on the earth
that make amino acids completelybrand new.
(05:08):
In the chloroplasts of all yourgreen plants, where they make
energy, they also make aminoacids.
They're grabbing the carbon andthe hydrogen and the nitrogen
and the oxygen and the sulfurand making these essential amino
acids Again completely brandnew.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
So what you're saying
is the source of all the
building blocks.
Of protein is found in plants.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yes, so even though
we may get those essential amino
acids from animals, they don'tmake them, so eventually it
comes from a plant.
If you have a carnivore thateats an animal that has eaten an
animal at some point in time, one of those animals was an
herbivore that ate a plant thatgot that amino acid, and so it's
simply being recycled and sentdown the chain.
(05:54):
And sent down the chain.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
So why not just cut
out the middle moo, exactly, or
the middle cluck?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Or the middle cluck,
or the middle fishy, or the
middle whatever.
You can insert whatever animalin there.
And earlier I was highlightingthe point about the
non-essential amino acids.
Well, it almost makes it soundlike we don't really need those
in our food because they'requote unquote, non-essential.
But again, we do not make anyamino acids brand new.
They're all configured from theessential ones that originate
(06:24):
at some point in time down thechain, whether directly from us
eating it or from whateveranimal we're eating it had to
originate in a plant, from aplant.
So that highlights the point.
Is a plant-based dietcompletely adequate for our
protein slash amino acid needs?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
And I know that was
one of the questions that you
absolutely had to have answeredfor you before you felt like
whole food, plant-based was aproper way to eat.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
It was one of the
first questions because, of
course, we heard all the sameadvertising and the same
messages that everybody elseheard you need protein, you must
eat animals.
So when we started wrapping ourminds around, wait a minute.
Plant-based is this true, isthis real?
That was one of the firstquestions that I asked and it's
a resounding yes.
Plants are completely adequatefor meeting your protein needs.
(07:11):
But those amino acids comingfrom animals come with a host of
other things, such as thecholesterol, the saturated fats,
hormones, arachidonic acids, like we talked a few episodes
back.
So it comes with other thingsin that package that aren't good
for us.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
They're detrimental
to our health.
And not only are theydetrimental to our health, they
don't come with the otherbeneficial things that plants
come with.
So it's like this double whammyof sorts.
That's what I call it.
You're getting these thingsthat are not good for you in the
name of quote health.
So if I'm eating my meat to getmy protein, then I'm getting
secondhand protein.
(07:46):
And not only that, I'm gettingall the other things that I
don't want to put into my body, like you just mentioned the
cholesterol, the arachidonicacid, all of these things that I
don't want to have.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
But then you're also
missing out on all the
beneficial aspects found inplants that are
anti-inflammatory, that areanti-inflammatory, that are
fighting cancer that arepromoting life and healing.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
So it's not just
about all the things you're
getting that can cause negativeside effects in your body.
It's about all the thingsyou're missing out on when
you're not eating the wholeplant foods.
Yes, Okay.
So what is the action steptoday?
What's that?
One takeaway that, if you putit into practice, is going to
make all the difference for you?
Get your protein from plants.
(08:30):
Number one and the second isdon't worry about getting your
protein, Stop worrying about it.
Stop spending so much money onprotein powders, protein shakes,
protein bars, amino acidsupplements, all these things.
It's just like realize thatthese are the building blocks of
protein.
That's what an amino acidsupplements.
All these things.
It's just like realize thatthese are the building blocks of
protein.
That's what an amino acid is.
Like Jared said, think of itlike Legos.
(08:51):
So if you're getting thosebuilding blocks in whole plant
foods which we know you are, andknow you do not have to protein
combine in order to get thoseon a plant-based diet then just
eat a wide variety of plants,Get a wide variety of the
nutrients you need and let thatgo.
I mean, imagine Adam and Evewalking around the garden
(09:13):
worrying about getting enoughprotein?
Oh, Adam, we got to go to thestore today because we need to
get some protein bars andprotein shakes and protein
powders and I'm probably notgetting enough protein.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
And Adam, we got to
flip that puppy over and see
does it have enough protein perserving to meet our needs?
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
There were no labels
in the garden.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Think about how crazy
that is.
We have to wrap our mind aroundthe fact that we have been
taught to do things that justdon't make sense and they take
so much of our brain power, somuch of our energy.
It's no wonder we're beingdriven crazy about and getting
frustrated by how to get healthy.
We believed all these lies thatcome through these marketing
(09:54):
agencies, through all theseproduct manufacturers that just
aren't true and cause us toworry about things, and so we
spend money on their productswhen, in the long run, it's just
not a necessary thing.
If we eat the right way, we'regoing to get the right nutrients
.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
And if we want to
look at a biblical precedence,
we call it the Daniel fast.
But Daniel wasn't fasting, hewas just eating the vegetables.
He wasn't eating the rich meatand he was stronger after 10
days than all the other men thatwere eating the rich meat.
So we have a biblicalprecedence there of how
vegetables and eating plants canpromote health and strength.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Such a great point.
Even the words we say can bemisleading.
The Daniel Fast yeah, he wasn'tfasting, he was eating quite
well.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
He was just eating
differently than all the other
people, but he was still eating.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Right and eating the
great stuff.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
They should have
called it the Daniel Feast is
what they should have called itthe Daniel Feast.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
I like that.
I think that's what we shouldcall it.
Yeah, we'll call it the DanielFeast, the Daniel.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Feast.
We'll just add it.
Call it the Daniel feast.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
I am in.
So, after this episode, justrelease the whole protein myth
once and for all.
Just lay it to rest.
You're going to get your aminoacids from eating a variety of
whole plant foods withoutworrying about protein combining
, without worrying about needingto buy this protein powder and
this protein shake, this proteinbar.
(11:17):
Find your new favorites.
Start keeping a running list ofthem.
It's going to blow your mindwhat I can show you how to do
with that list once you getinside Accelerator, our program
where we walk you through thefive steps of how in the world
do I make healthy, plant-basedeating sustainable.
It's really hard to do thatwhen you are worried about
(11:38):
protein and when you think it'sgoing to be hard.
It's going to take a lot oftime and all these other lies
that we believed about what ittakes to get healthy, but the
five steps inside acceleratorare the answer to how do I stop
falling off the healthy eatingwagon and make whole food, plant
based eating stick once and forall, so that I can finally feel
good and get out there and livemy God-given calling.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
All those numbers are
a distraction I mean, that's
really all they are is adistraction and it keeps you
from walking in freedom, becausethat's what we have.
We have food freedom because wedon't have to worry about those
aspects.
We have foods that we love.
They taste amazing, they'requick to prepare, they're not
difficult.
We don't have to worry aboutall the micros and macros and
(12:22):
all that stuff in there, becausewe just get a good wide variety
, and that's freedom.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
And we don't have to
portion control and feel angry
and jealous about what's onsomebody else's plate, because
we love what we're eating and wecan go out to eat with our
friends and enjoy it withoutfreaking out about what we're
going to eat and have when weget there, because we know the
methods to doing that in a waythat we enjoy.
We can focus on the things thatare most important our
(12:46):
relationships instead ofcounting grams of protein and
amino acids and all these otherthings that can make you crazy.
Let it go and move forward.
Enjoy, it's just not necessary.
Jared and I lost 75 poundstogether without ever using any
of these nasty, miserabledieting methods, still eating
(13:08):
the foods that we love.
We have clients do this on aregular basis, but it's about so
much more than weight.
What's going on on the inside ofyour body, in in your vessels,
with your gut lining and guthealth, with your ability to
think clearly, with your heart'sability to pump blood where it
(13:28):
needs to go, with your body'sability to get garbage out?
Think about when all thosethings happen in your body,
naturally, without any sideeffects, except for positive
ones.
What is going to becomepossible for you?
That is what this is all about.
That is what power on plants isall about.
That is what lights us up.
(13:48):
It's why we show up for youhere week after week, and why we
take your hand and walk youthrough the accelerator
framework, because this is thesystem that brings you lasting
results and helps you break freefrom all these crazy myths that
we believed as truth that haveheld us back for far too long.

How do we get dinner on thetable in under 15 minutes?
As a general rule, like how areyou doing this thing?
We can show you how to set itup so that it's lasting and that
(14:31):
you absolutely love it.
And all of a sudden, younaturally see your health
struggles reverse.
This is why we went intomedicine and nursing in the

these things with you.
We love you, we care about you.
You can get better.
Do not lose hope.
One step and then the next step, and before long you are going

And it's like Jared tells hispatients when we do our jobs
right you no longer need us, youjust love us because we've
helped you get free, and that'swhat we want.
We do don't want you to staystuck where you are.
There's no reason for it.
God has put you here for apurpose.
There is a calling on your lifeto be here for your friends,

level?
You can reach more people.
Think about the ripple effectthis is going to have when you
start taking these steps andrealize the joy and the freedom
(15:37):
that you find here, when you getrid of these crazy ideas like
amino acids and proteins.
And what about all the othernutrients in these foods?
And we're worried about just afew of them.
This is just one of the crazythings that has sideswiped us
from living joyfully and fullyin our calling, and that does
not have to be your story, because you're here and we're
